ello and welcome to the second ever issue of Absolutely, the new magazine dedicated to everything that makes you love where you live. We seek out the most interesting people, the essential events, the most beautiful clothes, the most stylish interiors and the quirkiest creations, all coming from our part of town. And we love a bit of gossip as much as the next person too (so please feel free to tell us some). This month, we were on location in Powis Square with canny snapper Mike Blackett and inspired stylist Charlotte Kewley, shooting a sharp selection of coats despite the unseasonally warm weather. Then it was a quick skip from coats to underwear to chat with Damaris Evans, the Notting Hill gal who has made an international name for herself in the world of super luxe lingerie. If you’ve never worn/gifted one of her bow knickers, now’s the time. Current affairs in the area A BLOW, FOLLOWED BY A MINOR VICTORY FOR KENSAL RISE LIBRARY It was a strange coincidence that 13 October, the day when Kensal Rise Library closed its doors, happened to be the 111th anniversary of its opening. It was on 13 October 1900 that Mark Twain famously opened the building and since then, generations of local families have used and loved the place. Brent’s decision to close six of its 12 libraries was upheld by a judge on 13 October, despite a powerful appeal against the PHIL JUPITUS original ruling. The campaign to save Kensal Rise library has attracted widespread support, not only in the local community but further afield too, with support coming from All Souls College in Oxford (the owners of the building) and the Mark Twain Trust in Connecticut as well as a diversity of celebrities spanning Alan Bennett, Alexei Sayle, Judith Wilson, Nick Cave, Phil Jupitus and many others. As soon as the judge’s ruling was announced, hundreds of supporters and their children flocked to the library and mounted a 24-hour vigil to stop the council from boarding it up. Campaigners camped outside and launched a people’s library with boxes of donated books stacked on the library walls. Posters are plastered all over the walls and a gazebo provides shelter for the round-theclock protest, and a flurry of surrounding press quickly sparked the Court of Appeal to agree to hear the appeal in November and forbid Brent to board up the library.

Another sell-out fundraising gig was held at Queens Park Community School with Alexei Sayle, Phil Jupitus, Robin Ince, Robyn Hitchcock and others. Phil Jupitus said “When I hear about libraries closing it makes me want to punch the person responsible very hard in the face.” Earlier this year, Alan Bennett likened closing libraries to child abuse. The strength of feeling is intense. Robin Ince said to the Kilburn Times: “We have people in charge who can’t understand why people want a library because they don’t need one. They can’t understand why, in a modern age, someone would want to go to a building to read books. Libraries are the protection of the most important thing civilisation has access to – knowledge. Closing them is a step back.” Meanwhile, the Save Kensal Rise Library campaigners have published details of Brent Council’s executive salaries on their website and the figures expose the irrelevance of the £1 million library closure saving.

PORTOBELLO VICTORY Campaigners from Save Portobello Market are celebrating a victory after the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s Planning Committee rejected the All Saints’ amended planning application at a meeting on 25 October. Developers behind the much-criticised fashion chain were proposing to install even more glass to the Portobello wall, while planning restrictions upheld in the ruling require that the shopfronts remain in keeping with the character of the street. This is the first victory for the market traders after a series of blows to the antiques trade and to the authenticity of the market.

Dark Ali Knight’s first novel is a tale of murder, set in her native Queen’s Park. She tells Pendle Harte why domesticity is the perfect backdrop for the psychological thriller

hat happens to chicklit when it grows up? It probably moves to Queen’s Park and has three children. That’s what journalist-turned novelist Ali Knight did, though her new book goes somewhere a bit darker. There’s a new wave of women writing crime novels, though Knight prefers to call them psychological thrillers, and her first, Wink Murder is out in paperback this month. It’s set inside a marriage, tracing a domestic idyll that’s shattered by a murder (or three). Think it couldn’t happen to you? The story’s firmly located in Queens Park and much of the backdrop is spookily familiar. You wouldn’t think it to look at her. Knight is sparky and attractive, wellgroomed and efficient and she lives in a beautiful, stylish house in NW6. When I visit, her three children are at school, her husband is at work and the cleaner is upstairs. She makes coffee and right away she’s talking about ultraviolence. “You just

have to read the Daily Mail to find out about murders – and I always think that with people’s capacity to psychologically torture the people they live with, and the closeness in which husbands, wives and children live together, it’s a wonder that people don’t get murdered more.” Knight has such a lovely house, and looks so nice, you can’t imagine a darkness at the heart of her domesticity – but that, I suppose, is her point. She’s fascinated by “squeezing out those secrets that happen behind closed doors.” Wink Murder was the talk of last year’s Frankfurt Book Fair and subject of a bidding war among European publishers (it has been translated into 10 languages and is selling well all over Europe). It is the story of a marriage that turns nasty when the husband comes home late and covered in blood, rambling about having killed someone. His wife soon suspects him of having murdered a colleague and their life is thrown into a chaotic whirl of bloodstained scarves, sexual jealousy, missing knives and multiple corpses, all amid

the school run, the lucrative TV career and the comfortable Victorian terrace. There’s a lot of plot. Getting this far hasn’t been entirely plain sailing, of course. Knight went back to a demanding journalistic career after her first child was born, and again after her second (she worked on the launch of the Evening Standard’s thisislondon website, and then on various corporate sites for the Daily Mail) but the workaholic culture eventually made it impossible for her. “When I think back to the kind of journalism I worked in pre-children, none of the women are still there. For years we were all competing with men for payrises and promotions and none of us realised that we’d all be gone after we had children – and the men didn’t either.” So despite being the only woman to be awarded a part-time contract by the Daily Mail after her second baby, she soon gave it up to devote herself to writing. “I probably had ambitions to be a writer for a long time in the heyday of chicklit but I didn’t feel like I had anything to add to it, though I didn’t mind reading it,” she says – and as a fan of Patricia Highsmith, she has developed a style that’s female-centred and merges murder and domesticity. 19

As everybody knows, the publishing industry is in crisis and Knight’s experience getting published has been laced with drama. Having sent off her first book to lots of agents without really expecting anything, she was immediately deluged with enthusiastic responses, and signed with the very high profile Peter Straus of Notting Hill-based Rogers, Coleridge and White. “It was crazy, suddenly I was in demand with all these agents wanting to sign me – and I’d gone from nothing to this.” Everyone told her the novel would be huge – until the publishers rejected it. “They liked it but said there was no market to put it in because it had a male central

character but was written by a woman, so it all fell completely flat on its face after the big high. I think this happens a lot.” Then she wrote Wink Murder, which scored her a two-book deal, and immediately everyone was saying it should be a film. “They said definitely not TV, because it’s set in London and everything’s on television has got to be in the regions, plus they don’t tend to commission things that are about TV industry, it’s too self-referential – but then a few months later I got a call saying there are two people bidding for the tv rights.” (Hat Trick won). The workings of the industry may be baffling, but she’s found

her niche now and has finished writing her second book already; it is being sold at Frankfurt as we speak. “I’ve decided that all of them should be set in London, it’s fertile ground, and there will be more gruesome murders of course.” Wink Murder is very femalecentred and it’s about a wife, a woman whose identity is very much defined by her husband’s, so her lack of independence is a surprise to a readership used to feisty fictional females. Why is she so unfeminist? “I wanted to do that, to go against the grain, so much is written about being independent and the sisterhood and that’s nonsense really when you’ve had children,” says Knight – and there’s a horrific scene in the book where our heroine is arrested outside the gates of her children’s school, in front of all the other mothers, a nightmarish scenario for any housewife. “Yes, a few people at school have mentioned that,” says Knight. “ As they say, you write what you know.” Well, apart from the gruesome murders of course. t

I find it quite funny that everyone is suddenly talking about how trendy Kensal Rise is. I’ve lived there for 10 years,” he says.

Face time Kensal Green-based photographer Chris Floyd’s portrait project One Hundred & Forty Characters seeks out the faces behind the Twitter feeds

ne hundred and forty characters make up a Twitter feed – and when photographer Chris Floyd noted that his feed had attracted a similar number of followers, this project was born. “Where Facebook might be considered as TONY 1892; LILY ALLEN the place in which you tell lies to all the people you went to school with, I had begun to think of Twitter as the place where you tell the truth to all those that you wish you’d gone to school with,” explains Floyd, who found himself using Twitter heavily as his work became digital. Where

there used to be trips to labs, printers and photographic stores, his working day became more screen-bound and Twitter began to fill the “huge social void”. So when he had amassed 140 followers without knowing what any of them looked like, he had to find out. And here they are. This Blenheim Crescent maisonette was entirely reconfigured after 30 years of neglect, creating a space that’s both open-plan and cosy PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS TUBBS

his basement and ground floor maisonette on Blenheim Crescent was virtually derelict when architect Charles Mellersh was commissioned. His brief was to create an open plan home that wouldn’t feel cold or anonymous – and it took a gut renovation as well as a new build extension and a redesign of the front and rear courtyard. “We decided to provide cosy areas like the tiny book-lined study and the sun-lit morning room that opens up onto the courtyard garden,” explains Mellersh. He also took on the design of the custom-made bathroom and kitchen and the client’s passion for cooking made the latter a priority. A large freestanding pantry cupboard dispenses with the need for wall cupboards and brickbond tiled walls and honed

How were you approached to put on the exhibition and is this the first for the company? This is our first exhibition showing our wall art, as this is a completely new concept of combining high quality inkjet printing with gilding. Foale & Sons are best known for beautiful headboards and abstract art. This new range offers a selection of affordable art; how did that come about? Our beds take two months each to produce, so while it is a pleasure to make them, it often leads to the feeling of moving slowly as a business. What is your background in art, how did you start the company? I taught myself how to gild 30 years ago and made decorative screens, mirrors and furniture using verre églomisé (a process

of gilding and painting behind glass). My main career has been as a portrait painter, but three years ago my sons suggested they expanded my gilding and design work as a family company.

What do you think attracts people to your work? The gilding creates a luminous colour effect that subtly brightens

What artists do you admire? Cornelia Parker and Peter Doig are the artists I most admire. My inspiration comes from anyone who brings a new twist to classical designs and techniques, as London has a rich history of innovation. How did you end up in Kensal Rise? Foale & Sons was started by my son Jamie making gilded and hand painted Christmas cards from my own studio in Little Venice, and when that proved a success we had the confidence to move to our excellent studios in Kensal Rise. There is an appreciation of the arts in the area, which was recently proved by a busy NW10 open studios, where it seemed half the area came around. Basements that’s what you’ll find; hundreds of them, all over London. There are so many basements being built around London that you would be forgiven for thinking we are becoming a subterranean species. Some high profile celebrities are so against them, when even more of the glitterati are having them built. So, we thought we would ask our old sparring partner, Steven McDicken from Metropolitan Basements, to justify the upheaval, the digging , the dirt and the bad press! Why do people hate basements? The only people who hate basements are the ones that don’t need them. Everybody else I know loves them. So… why do people love basements? Simple… more space! and at a fraction of the cost of moving home.

At a fraction of the cost… please explain? Well if you wanted to move home it would cost you say £800 to £1500 per square foot for that extra floor space and if you build a basement it only costs you, £400 per square foot including the VAT. In fact, what you would save on the stamp duty you have to pay when moving house, goes a long way to buying a large part of your basement! So are you saying it’s purely for money? No… more space! But, by doing so you just happen to create rather a lot of equity in your home. It ‘coincidently’ makes good financial sense. Unless you just sell it on, of course.

What about the bad press? People will always be people; they will make a mountain out of a basement, then they will turn around and build one themselves. No one wants to live next door to a basement being dug… the noise for a start, do you think they will ban them eventually? They can’t, they’re largely permitted development and you can’t see them. As for the noise, they are no less noisy than digging your garden and they are a million times quieter than someone digging up the road. Traffic noise in London is more than the sound of a basement being dug. Anyway, we work 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, when everybody is at work.

Planning is not an issue then? There is no reason why it should be. Except listed buildings and even then it can be done. How long to build one? Depends on the size but let’s say 1220 weeks for the majority of houses in London. Who designs them? We have an architect who is rather experienced with them. He wrote a book: Architect Your Home by Hugo Tugman. There is a section in there all about basements too. You can buy it from www.anovabooks.com Don’t be put off by his picture, he is actually one of the nicest architects I’ve ever met. So what’s your parting shot to the basement critics and lovers alike? Well, not a parting shot - just a statement that the majority of people will eventually get a basement dug to gain that extra space, especially in the more affluent areas of London. Even if you are against it now, you will succumb in the months or years to come or the people that move into your house after you are gone will get one done. It’s just going to happen, like it or not, and it’s going to be widespread, just in the same way double glazing stated in the 70’s, but much less intrusive or visible because it’s underground!

Our wizard from Oz Aussie chef Bill Grainger opens a new restaurant on Westbourne Grove this month – and going by his new book, it’ll be a gastro delight. Absolutely has a taste

Classic stir-fried chicken with basil This is the sort of stir-fry you might make for your first ever dinner party, it’s so easy to prepare and always a crowd pleaser. I’m not sure I’ve ever used the real Thai or holy basil as the proper stuff’s called, as I tend to throw in regular Italian basil and it works a treat. I kind of like the fusion factor, and throwing caution to the wind. 4 garlic cloves 2 large red chillies ¼ teaspoon sea salt 2 tablespoons light-flavoured oil 600g chicken mince 400g snake beans or green beans, cut into 5cm lengths on the diagonal 2 tablespoons fish sauce 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce 1 tablespoon caster sugar Small handful Asian basil leaves or regular basil Pinch ground white pepper Pound the garlic, one chilli and salt in a mortar and pestle until it forms a paste. Alternatively, place the garlic and chilli on a chopping board, sprinkle with the salt and finely chop with a knife using the side of the blade to make a paste. Slice

the remaining chilli thinly. Heat a wok or large non-stick frying pan over medium–high heat. Add the oil and the garlic paste and sliced chilli and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds or until the garlic starts to colour.   Add the mince and cook, stirring, for about two minutes or until starting to brown, then add the beans and cook for a further minute. Add the fish sauce, soy sauce and sugar and stir-fry for a further 30 seconds. Remove from the heat, stir in the basil leaves and white pepper. Serve immediately with steamed rice.Serves 4

Italian job New to Notting Hill Gate, Valentina is a big-hearted eaterie with a huge appetite too. Absolutely has a feast

ust opened on Notting Hill Gate, this family-run Italian has a policy of generosity. It’s obvious from the sheer abundance of produce on display – there’s a huge deli counter bursting with antipasti and shelves crammed with dry goods, and behind all of this there’s a restaurant area, secluded from the shop. This is decorated with family photographs on the walls and highlights from grandpa Valentina’s collection of old motorbikes suspended from the ceiling. Yes, that’s real vintage Moto Guzzis, lovingly kept, in Italian shades of red, white and green, dangling motionless as decoration. Why hide them in a shed, they thought (and apparently there are lots more too). You get the sense that this is the product of a family dynasty, an Italian legacy. It’s a big – vast – menu, full of all the Italian favourites you’d expect, plus more too. It’s best to arrive hungry. First off, there’s delicious bread and sweet olive oil and bite-sized pieces of mature parmesan; then for us it was the antipasto della casa to share – a generous platter of Parma ham, mortadella, two sorts of salami (Milano and Napoli), provolone cheese and small balls of mozzarella. All of it fresh and well-chosen. Then came huge steaming bowls of pasta – spaghetti alle vongole veraci for me, packed with sweet small clams and deliciously oily and

garlicky. My friend had taglioni al astice e cozze, with a half lobster and mussels in cherry tomato and white wine sauce, again looking lavish and impressive and tasting intense. We could of course have had pizza – and there are lots on offer, including unusual ones like Nordica (smoked salmon, sweet corn, mozzarella and rocket), Bresaola and Calabrese (spicy salami, dolcelatte cheese and chilli oil) – all looking tempting. There’s also a list of secondi such as pan fired calves liver or chicken stuffed with spinach and taleggio. Dolce had to be done and tiramisu arrived cleverly disguised as a cappuccino, a cute cup topped with froth and cocoa powder, while underneath was creamy, coffeed biscuity heaven. Iconic Kensington Place has undergone its first refurb since it opened in 1987. Absolutely revisits

t’s often credited with changing the way London eats out. Kensington Place was one of the first restaurants that bridged the gap between stuffy formal dining and nasty cheap food, sparking the dining revolution that everyone knows led to London becoming the gastro hotspot it is today. The original chef and owner Rowley Leigh moved on to Le Cafe Anglais a few years ago, leaving KP and its iconic – though increasingly dated – interior to the Conran clan, and their string of head chefs with increasingly complicated menu ideas. But now the interior’s undergone a makeover, while the menu has in many ways returned to its roots. Gone

are the famous postmodernist chairs with their rounded, coloured backs, and gone is the parquet flooring and the uniformity. Instead, the furniture is varied, with some yellow chairs, some blue upholstered banquettes, other pale wood, Nordic style simple kitchen-style chairs with turquoise details. Near the bar there’s a long table with board games laid out, and a new mgazine rack that seems to be encouraging punters to lounge a bit. And the floor is a big black and white chequerboard on the diagonal that, along with all the blues, gives a very fish restauranty feel. Because that’s where they’re going – with their fish shop having become one of London’s finest, the restaurant is siding itself with fish. There are fish-shaped jugs on every table and shelves display fish plates and fishing paraphenalia. It’s a long menu and totally devoid of adjectives. To start, there are oysters and shellfish, as well as favourites such as fish soup, steak tartare or foie gras parfait with brioche.

We had the smoked fish platter, which was a stone slab featuring mackerel, salmon, anchovies, sprats, cod’s roe, tiny cornichons and sourdough toast – all of it subtly smoked and perfectly put together. Grilled king prawns with chilli and garlic were huge and juicy. My main course was skate wing from the market list (choose from roast, grilled or poached; hollandaise, herb butter or sauce vierge) with Maris Peer potatoes and it was super soft, falling off the bones perfectly. A salt cod and leek fishcake came with an impressive poached egg on top and luxurious chive sauce, and had a faultless batter – just crispy enough, not crunchy. All the details are spot on too: a simple leaf salad was beautifully dressed, the bread is tasty, butter is sweet and creamy. Our dessert of floating island, praline, salted caramel and vanilla parfait was a heavenly concoction of soft meringue, sweet vanilla cream and crunchy caramel. With its charming staff (always smiling, never too formal, always there at the right moment) and new menu that captures the original spirit of the place, KP is definitely undergoing a renaissance. t Kensington Place, 201 Kensington Church Street W8 020 7727 3184

The long bar is staffed by perfectionists and cocktails come in four categories: Martinis, Long, Bubbles and Strong – but don’t expect the usual. Martinis are made with strawberry liqueur and balsamic, or rosemary and grapes, while long drinks include She’s Electric – raspberry vodka, strawberry and vanilla sugar; and under Strong you’ll find the BonBon – vanilla vodka with butterscotch, limoncello and vanilla sugar. Pricey it may be, and staff on the arrogant side – with Soho House on the their side they don’t need to grovel to the average drinker, and anyway they’re beautiful enough to pull it off – but the Electric’s atmosphere is worth it in the end. three-week gastronomic tour of Mr Skott’s native Denmark (including truly the best meal of our life at Noma) left us needing to do something about our waistlines. So when people kept coming to the salon looking fabulous and raving about Dukan, we jumped on board. You can eat as much beef fillet as you want, so it’s a doddle. Pizza East Portobello is our local meeting venue and last time we spotted beautiful Nintendo family the Rednapps there, looking as glossy in real life as they do on screen, and our newly slim selves didn’t miss pizza one bit. So, to Alice Temperley’s fashion show in the British Museum’s stunning atrium for Grace Kelly-inspired clothes and sleek ponytails tied with floaty chiffon scarves. It was all a bit too grown-up for Peaches Geldof, who spent the entire time fiddling with her phone (how rude, said Mr Skott), though nearby Pippa Middleton behaved impeccably, of course (and her hair was lovely too). We have loved every minute of being BikeMinded bike heroes, zipping around on our Turkish green Brompton and demonstrating the quick fold for anyone who would watch. But Kensington and Chelsea’s cycling scheme had to come to an end so we met up with our fellow council-sponsored cyclists to say farewell to our lovely bikes. We were able to drown our sorrows over some specially-designed cocktails at Aubrey Doyle bar in the Kensington Hotel. Delicious Moulton Martinis, Electra infusions and Berries in a Brompton all went down well (Mr Skott said that Dukan was fine about cocktails). Lambton Place Mews is normally a peaceful oasis of calm but this month it’s been a hive of activity. Our neighbours at BeautyWorksWest are constantly taking deliveries of lovely new beauty products and people are literally queuing for them. The re-launch of Kensington Place was eagerly awaited by us, having been going there for more than 20 years; it is nice to see the place still going strong. We found ourselves in a prime spot outside the kitchen, in line for the never-ending canapés, which included foie gras, steak tartare, and sea bass. They were so good, we can’t wait to go back and try some of chef Daniel Loftin’s new menu. Maybe Dukan’s not such a doddle after all, said Mr Skott.. t

Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons

Helen Baron experiences gourmet grandeur at Raymond Blanc’s Oxfordshire manor house THE MANOR

If you’re not aware of the pedigree of Oxfordshire’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons before your visit, you’ll be suspecting it soon after your arrival. This world-famous hotel and restaurant has behind it over a quarter of a century of Michelin Staradorned reputation (it’s been awarded two stars, to be precise, every year for the past 27), and from the moment you turn down leafy Church Road and into the circular driveway, you begin to realise why. The first friendly greeting comes from a porter who takes our bags, calls ahead to the hotel to inform them of our arrival and promises that we’ll be reunited with our luggage in our suite. A warm sun accompanies our stroll down the Lavender Walk towards the beautiful 17th century manor house that is to be our lodging for the next, blissful 24 hours.

The house is a medley of soft grey and mustard coloured stone, with red gabled roofs and the kind of proud, bright orange chimneys I had thought long since lost to the English countryside. It’s a storybook setting made all the more potent by the warmth of our welcome. The hotel manager is on hand to greet us at reception and give us a short tour of the accommodation, which is divided between 32 individually designed rooms across the main house (more traditionally furnished) and a converted stable block (where a kind of ‘country contemporary’ style reigns supreme). What is most evident in the official literature about Le Manoir is also clear in our host’s conversation: a real pride in the sheer beauty of the estate and a sense of joy at being able to share it with guests.

Our room comes with an array of what I’ll term ‘ambience options’ – lighting settings, indulgently upholstered places to recline, a wetroom shower. Also of note are the complimentary fruit and chocolates (Le Manoir’s own, of course): even the lemons seem possessed of an unearthly amount of flavour. My partner and I rhapsodise relentlessly before turning our attentions to the outside. It opens onto a private terrace bedecked with flowers specially chosen to reflect the room’s theme. The terrace then leads onto a courtyard with a magnificent 200 year-old horse chestnut tree at its centre; beyond this lie the main grounds of the estate. We cross two acres of fragrant herb and vegetable gardens, wander through an apple orchard strewn with fallen fruit

a pear amandine with caramel croustillante and ginger sauce, and a ‘paquet surprise’ containing a tangy lemon parfait on a bed of soft, warm cherries – were exquisite. At Le Manoir you can trust that your special meal is going to be just that: something tells me that Raymond Blanc and his team, architects of the good life one and all, don’t do disappointment.

THE RESTAURANT and pick our way around the rocky banks of a fishpond first dug by 17th century monks and now part of a tranquil Japanese tea garden, complete with dusky pink traditional tea house. In appearance and etiquette, Le Manoir is a kind of distillation of Englishness at its best: which makes it all the more notable that it was founded and is still run by a French chef, self-taught genius Raymond Blanc. Blanc decides on everything from the decor onwards – and his dedication to the place is evident in all the little details that make it such a special place to stay. Here is a man who knows how to dream and has worked tirelessly to make that dream a reality. The beating heart of this enterprise is the restaurant, and the food that has made Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons a favourite of gastronomes the world over.

Dinner here is like nowhere else. From cocktails and canapés in one of the two peaceful salons (where you order your food and wine with the aid of expert hosts and an in-house sommelier) through to the restaurant itself, partially housed in the elegant Orangerie, Le Manoir is exactly the triumph you’ve been led to expect. There’s even a lengthy vegetarian menu. Among the many and various delicacies we sampled were curryballs with lime mayonnaise, a salad of artichoke hearts fresh from the garden, quail’s egg ravioli, dinky pasta parcels served with a cube of roasted pumpkin, toasted pumpkin seeds and some kind of mangoinfused sauce, plus the greatest wild mushroom and black truffle risotto ever gobbled by a son of man. The recommended wine, a PouillyFumé, was just as described, not too dry and not too acidic but fine and full-flavoured. And the desserts –

Rehearsals are in week six and we move into the theatre today. All very exciting and scary. Michael Sheen is such an incredible force to be reckoned with on stage. Is it your first time at the Young Vic? Or Shakespeare? This is my first time at The Young Vic – I’ve seen so many shows there it’ll be amazing to step out on the floor. I’ve worked on Macbeth and Merchant of Venice in Ireland and ions ago did Troilus and Cressida at the Old Vic. When did your acting career first take off? I started acting at 17 in a play called Danti-Dan by Gina Moxley and then Disco Pigs by Enda Walsh. Where are you from and what brought you to London? I’m from Cork in Ireland but lived in Edinburgh for quite a while with Stuart my husband. The move south came from him really, for his postgrad at the Royal College of Art. Where do you live and do you like to eat/drink/shop locally? We live in and love Kensal Green.

London development continues to buck the trend

onfidence in the London market remains high. Consequently house builders and developers have refocused activity on the capital in the expectation it will lead to recovery. Residential property in London has echoes some of the national trends over the last few years following the UK into the second dip house prices over the second half of 2010. However, more recently property in London has outperformed the national average, reflecting a wider confidence in the capital’s housing market. As a consequence, this has caused house-builders and developers to refocus activity on London in the expectation that it will lead to recovery in the market. Confidence and Demand According to HBF (Home Builders Federation), demand in terms of site visitors and net reservations is significantly stronger in London.

Homebuilders’ view of sales in the year ahead has been more changeable compared to the South East and Great Britain; however its current position is more optimistic. The HBF net balance of opinion of London sales shows a positive balance of +63% in June. Demand in underpinned by buyer confidence and also a greater ability of buyers to purchase within a mortgage constrained market. It is also the ability to sell property to overseas buyers in those locations which Asian buyers, in particular, are familiar with. In addition, new supply is constrained, supporting current pricing.

Against this context, it is not surprising that national volume house builders are showing confidence in the London market and have focused their development strategies towards London where the market has proved more resilient over recent years. Housing Scarcity The latest (revised) house building figures for the first half of 2011 show that housing starts are 21% below peak levels (First six months of 2007) but ahead of England, which is still 45% below beak levels. Whole comparatively robust, these figures are still well below the Mayor’s target; London’s annual completions

Risks to London Market Despite homebuilders’ positivity about sales in the year ahead, we must not get complacent about the strength of the London market as it is also heavily susceptible to changes in the economic and political climate. Currently, London is seen as a safe haven for international wealth.
