EDITOR’S

LETTER MAY 2013

M

y earliest memory of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show was not being able to go to it. This was a ‘grown-ups’ outing, which I was ‘too young’ to appreciate. It made me feel cross and bothered – and sick with the injustice of it all. I didn’t want to make ‘my own show’ in the garden out of sticks and twigs, as my mother helpfully suggested as a suitable alternative. I wanted to see the real thing for myself. And so it was that in my early twenties, I finally made it. And it was more abundantly beautiful than I could possibly have imagined. For this reason, and the fact that this year marks its 100th anniversary, I have dedicated this issue to it – to the show and all things floral and garden-related. Jinny Blom, the award winning garden designer, speaks to me about her thought-provoking Chelsea garden design for Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale. An afternoon spent with her was as peaceful and relaxing as an afternoon in a garden itself, and I hope this translates to the page. We have a lovely pictorial spread celebrating 100 years of RHS Chelsea, as well as lots of flower-inspired jewellery and fashion ideas too. Steering slightly away from gardens, Tom Ford (yes, that fashion legend) talks to us about fatherhood, whilst author Louise Fennell gives me downright laugh-envy. With nature-themed places (and dishes) to eat, and tips for doing up your own lawn, my only regret with this issue is that it doesn’t quite smell like a garden. But if you read it in one, it might.

THEATRE REVIEW

NINEVEH BY JULIA PASCAL

RIVERSIDE STUDIOS

N

ineveh opens to a highly choreographed scene, its characters pulsating with a rhythmic and violent nervousness: dressed in mismatched and ragged clothes, they play out a military exercise in pastiche. This new play, by the physical theatre company Theatre Temoin, is part of their Return Project, which draws inspiration from the testimony of international soldiers. The action is set in the bowels of an unknown entity: for most of the play, the audience, and indeed the players, are (at times, literally) in the dark, as to where they are and how they got there. This, as much as any of the dialogue, reflects the chaos and living nightmare of war.

The title refers to the city in which Jonah was to proselytize. The men begin to believe that, like Jonah, they are in the belly of a fish and cannot leave until they have made their nightmarish confessions, a prerequisite for obtaining redemption. The haunted and murderous characters seem to suffer from isolated, individual guilt rather than the collective burden usually associated with war: for, save the boy who appears mid-way through like a messianic apparition, there is no obvious link between their violent misdeeds and any wider fight. But maybe this is what we are invited to feel from this thought-provoking if harrowing production: that there is no coherence in war, that it is merely a crowd of confused and flawed individuals, battling alone with the heavy burden of their painful memories. After a love affair with an older married man lands her in MI5, Serena Frome’s voracious love of reading results in her working undercover to recruit a writer who must not know he is being recruited by MI5. In an early seventies Britain, all drab and volatile and with the Cold War sliding into its final, turgid stage, Serena finds herself falling in love with her writer. There are all the ingredients of a good spy novel for sure, but this is an Ian McEwan spy novel, and soon turns in to something else entirely. A book that is playful, clever, knowing and full of stories.

18 May The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing an evening of two of Mozart’s masterpieces as part of their Resident Season at Cadogan Hall. Both works were composed in the last few years of Mozart’s life and stand as evidence of his musical genius. From the famous opening bars of the G Minor Symphony, No. 40, to his extraordinary Requiem Mass the evening promises to deliver music of sheer brilliance and power. mma Tennant’s new novel The Beautiful Child is a chilling supernatural story of perversion, cruelty and neglect, based on Henry James’s unfinished novella of the same title, which he began and abandoned in 1902. James’s tale, as Tennant imagines it, is about an attractive, childless couple who ask an artist to paint the child they long to have. The sex of this child remains uncertain. Children feature prominently in James’s most famous supernatural tale The Turn of the Screw – which is narrated by the governess of two young children who comes to believe that spirits are haunting her charges. With her evocative, new tale, Tennant takes up where James’s novella leaves off. Her multi-layered narrative unfolds in familiar gothic territory of uncertainty and horror. The novel’s four main characters, including James himself, his two secretaries Mary Weld and Theodora Bosanquet and Professor Jan Sutherland, all try to understand why he abandoned his ghost story. Theodora, the Master’s last and possibly unhinged amanuensis, continues to take his dictation from beyond the grave using the Ouija Board as her ‘outernet’. From his ghostly realm ‘beyond the stars’, James leads her to a secret room in Lamb House, his creepy former home, where he had secreted his unfinished novella. By Alice Coke

The Tribeca Film Festival 2013 got under way last month in New York and although perhaps not the most traditional of screening locations, two films that were shown at the VW Dome at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) PS1 and at the VW Dome 2 at Rockaway Beach were of particular note. Alberi by Michaelangelo Frammartino was part of the Special Screening section of this year’s festival and was exhibited as a cinematic installation at MoMA PS1. The film enveloped its audience in sound and images, and paid homage to the simple beauty of unfettered nature and the ancient cultural traditions lost to modernity. The community of the Rockaways was devastated by Super Storm Sandy last autumn and Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, is a film built out of the environment in which it was filmed. Local director, Sam Fleischner, has infused his piece (partially shot during the storm) with an exceptional sense of place. It was shown in Chelsea and also screened at the VW Dome 2, located on the Rockaway beachfront, where the board walk once stood, at the heart of the world the film depicts. alexsloane.com

WOULDN’T IT BE

LOVELY? Catherine Hales goes behind the scenes of the New Covent Garden Flower Market and the Judith Blacklock Flower School

M

y first impression on arriving at the site of the New Covent Garden Flower Market was that I was terribly lost. I’m not sure what I was expecting from London’s historical flower market, perhaps several viewings of My Fair Lady had warped my expectations. I was instead confronted with a large industrial-looking warehouse surrounded by parked cars and trolleys. The flower market has been comfortably settled in its ‘new’ surroundings since 1971 and is more a place of business than a tourist attraction. I was on my way to meet Judith Blacklock, owner of the Judith Blacklock Flower School and editor of The Flower Arranger magazine, to be given a tour and then to participate in a flower arranging class back at her school. ‘I’ve been waving at you for five minutes!’ I quickly turn to see my guide striding towards me smiling and proffering a hand. We were meeting on the first floor of the market where part of the school is located and from which students can observe and learn about the flowers sold there. In just a few minutes, it is clear that Judith is a force to be reckoned with; incredibly friendly but equally no-nonsense, she begins our tour immediately explaining that we will have a look around, before picking up an order she has waiting downstairs.

As we begin to walk through the main body of the warehouse Judith is greeted warmly on all sides; she is clearly a recognised character around the market and responds cheerfully, but without stopping. As we wander I am struck by the lack of women present; almost all of the flower-sellers appear to be men.

As Judith consults with one over the problems of transporting certain types of flowers, it’s evident they are experts in their field. Our tour takes us past flowers of every shape and type imaginable, and Judith commentates on their quality

and origins. She explains that a large proportion of the flowers are Dutch and that wholesalers from overseas import several of the rest. She also instructs on how to tell if a rose is fresh and whether or not a narcissus will last. After examining countless exquisite flowers, my favourites being the seas of vibrant and colourful tulips, we stopped off for a late breakfast in the market’s ‘caff ’. A no frills, workers café, clearly frequented by the market’s sellers and staff, I was treated by Judith to honestly one of the best bacon sandwiches I’ve ever had. Judith then explained how she got into the flower business. Her mother had always been very interested in flowers and as a result she had not been. However, after getting married and living in Paris, she had a change of heart. ‘I wanted to be the best at something, flowers were the clear choice.’ We drove across London to Judith’s flower school in Knightsbridge, enjoying animated and friendly conversation until we arrived at the mews where the school is located. Charming, cobbled and filled with masses of flowers, I spied two of Judith’s employees sorting through them. The class that I had been invited to sample was ‘Day One’ of the intensive one-week Floral Design Diploma. This particular course is for enthusiastic amateurs who wish to improve their skills in flower arranging. My fellow students hailed from all over the world –

Japan, Guatemala, Malaysia, America, the Netherlands and Italy. Judith was an engaging teacher, as I guessed she would be, and immediately everyone was at ease. After a general introduction and brief lesson in basic flower arranging, we were taught how to make a party favour. I approached my practical efforts with trepidation, worried about making mistakes. But the

pace was perfect, no man left behind, and before I knew it I had produced an adorable little arrangement. My enthusiasm had been piqued and I attacked the next task with gusto. This was slightly more challenging as it involved more than one flower but as before, everything was explained in manageable stages. All around me everyone was completely focused on their projects and gradually the table filled with abundant arrangements. As the class finished, we proudly and carefully packed up our ensembles to take home. For those who can only spare a day, the school offers a one-day taster course which is definitely worth a try. In this beginner’s opinion, it’s a truly brilliant way to spend an afternoon. 4/5 Kinnerton Place South, SW1; judithblacklock.com

SCARVES &

CRAFTS

Managing Director of Hermès, Bertrand Michaud, talks to Absolutely about the Festival des Métiers and how to make an Hermès scarf

25

HERMES.indd 25

26/04/2013 16:14

The Hermès scarf. An icon. Why is that do you think? Its heritage. Hermès scarves tell a story – they’re travelling companions, like a Swiss army knife.

What are they made of? Our scarves are made of 100% silk but we also have many varieties of cashmere and silk.

Explain the design process. Since the creation of the carré [square] in 1937, more than 1,500 designs have been created. Many different people have contributed to them – artists, illustrators and graphic designers, from many different cultures. Every year we have around 30 new designs, each telling an individual story.

So you have the design, what is the next step? Once the theme of the year is decided upon, it takes between nine and 12 months to finalise the design. Then it’s onto an engraver, next to printing and then colouring. Hermès scarves are printed ‘on the frame’ and this method is extensively used in Lyon, home of

Hermès scarf-making. The hand-rolled hem is the last stage prior to the scarf’s release for sale. It occupies some 80 deft-fingered seamstresses who hem the scarves with a special stitch. Each scarf takes 20-30 minutes. It can take up to two years for our scarves to reach the shop windows.

Is there a most successful or sought after scarf? I would say ‘Brides de Gala’, created under Robert Dumas in 1957. It has been reissued over the years, reworked and re-coloured numerous times, embroidered, sequinned, remixed… It’s an Hermès ‘greatest hit’!

To the festival… why was the Festival des Metiers conceived? Hermès wanted to share their ‘savoirfaire’, and the festival was a logical continuation from last year’s exhibition, ‘Leather Forever’.

Why don’t you want to keep the Hermès design process a secret?! We are like collectors. We want to show what we have, to reveal the craft.

What will we find at the festival? Quality craftsmanship, the dedicated artisans, beauty, fantasy, dreams, the expertise… Hermès is 176 years old, so it is 176 years of talent.

Why did you choose the Saatchi Gallery to hold it at? Where else?! It’s the contrast that interests us, juxtaposing our tradition in a modern setting.

Tell us a bit about you. You have worked for Hermès for over 15 years, is this right? Time flies, 21 years… but deep inside I’m very young!

You’ve worked across the world with Hermès – can you describe some highlights? My 12 years in Hong Kong and then in India. The opening of the Bombay boutique, which is a listed building, is one of my highlights as we were the first brand to open on the street. It was a very exciting time for us

How did you arrive at Hermès? I met Jean-Louis Dumas, the charismatic

ART&CULTURE FAC T B OX The histor y of Hermès... Founded in 1837, Thierry Hermès was a harness-maker by trade and set up a business, providing harnesses for the carriage makers of the Champs Elysées and the great stables of France. Each were exquisitely made and technically perfect, so his reputation quickly spread. Before long, the company moved to larger premises on 24 Rue du Faubourg St Honoré, where the flagship store remains. Hermès now has 14 ‘product families’ including: leather, silk, perfume, watches, art of the table, art of living, fine jewellery and ready-to-wear.

chairman of Hermès, 22 years ago. He offered me a job when I wasn’t even looking for one! Three months later, I started working there.

How many Hermès ties do you own? Do you have a favourite? When you love, you don’t count… but ‘Les Mords’ tie is my favourite. It’s a design by Henri d’Origny and is inspired by the world of equestrianism. I have it in every colour and I have worn it for all the important days of my life. When I need luck, I wear it.

HAN DBAGS And now to handbags... Is it true that each bag is made by one craftsman? Yes, each bag is the work of one craftsman from beginning to end. Each is unique and each artisan is proud of every bag they create.

We all know about the Birkin, but it’s the Kelly that’s on display at the festival. Tell us about it. In 1930’s Robert Dumas created a women’s handbag. It lead a quiet life until 1956 when it appeared on the arm of Grace Kelly, and that’s when it began to be photographed. It was later renamed ‘Kelly’. The Kelly bag, like most of our bags, takes from 12 to 18 hours to make. The craftsman gathers the different elements needed and then moves on to the assembly stage.

Where is your leather sourced? Hermès chooses its leathers carefully. The Hermès buyer is a patient person, who will only acquire the best skins from across the world. It is tactile work; they need to stroke it, breathe it and smell it. There is huge variety of leathers and this is the result of so many different animal skins. Choosing leather is rather like selecting a cigar or fine wine – there are good growths and good vintages.

Can you address the concept of waiting lists for Hermès bags? The concept of a ‘waiting list’ is legend only. Anyone is welcome to visit Hermès and purchase a bag. Due to the variations in model, leather, size and hardware, there are occasions where a specific bag is not available. Our products are not mass-produced so it can result in lead times. But our doors are always open.

Where are your bags made? We have 2,300 leather artisans working from 12 different Hermès workshops all over France. However, in total we have more than 3,000 artisans working on many different crafts.

THE WANDSWORTH BRIDGE ROAD When the Wandsworth Bridge was opened in 1873, food for the occasion was provided by the Spread Eagle pub nearby. Constructed to link Fulham and Wandsworth, the bridge was built by popular demand from local residents and businesses, who felt an extra link between the north and south banks would be beneficial for the area. Today, it stands as proud as ever, at the head of one of London’s busiest roads… The Wandsworth Bridge Road.

BLOM Award winning garden designer, Jinny Blom, talks to Edwina Langley about sending notes to Prince Harry in Camp Bastion and bringing Lesotho to Chelsea

When Sentebale rang me to ask me if I’d like to design their B&Q sponsored Chelsea garden, I asked what Lesotho was like. ‘It’s a bit like Wales or Scotland,’ they said. ‘Nothing really grows there. And it’s very cold.’’ Such was the challenge set for England’s premier garden designer, Jinny Blom, when Sentebale (Prince Harry’s charity for the vulnerable children afflicted by HIV/AIDS in the Kingdom of Lesotho) came a-calling. For some, this would have been a hugely daunting prospect, but having previously designed Prince Charles’ Healing Garden (2002), dedicated to The Queen Mother, Jinny took up the challenge with gusto. ‘I really liked the idea and since my background is in health, as well as gardening [she is a former psychologist], I thought it was a nice combination. For me, it’s important to have a good story. And it’s great to come back all these years later with Prince Harry – a young member of the Royal Family. It’s a Royal Show, the centenary, and since my last garden (commemorating The Queen Mother) was sad, it’s nice to do something that is all about life and spirit and moving on.’ So an exciting challenge, but a challenge nonetheless – and an impressive one too; she designed the garden before she’d even visited the country. ‘When Sentebale contacted me I’d never heard of Lesotho. I visited it last month, but I designed the garden

last year – it’s amazing what you can do with Google and a couple of days’ research! I did a lot on the landscape, the soil and the plants that grow there. My first impressions were, ‘I have to make a garden that’s good enough for the centenary of Chelsea… from a country of grass and forget-me-nots!’ And then I started really looking and discovered they have willows. That’s something we understand. I thought I’d do a nice, damp valley planting, and then make it higher, drier and rougher to represent the mountains. For the rest, I decided on ‘prettiness’ with forget-me-nots, which is what ‘Sentebale’ means.’ With eyes like the colour of forget-menots, and a calm, near-on lyrical voice, talking with Jinny is one of the most relaxing ways to spend an afternoon. If she speaks to her plants like she’s talking to me, I considered, no wonder they grow so well. She turns her attention to a sketch of the garden and takes me through its various features. There’s a ‘little mud circle’, inspired by popular mud decoration used in Lesotho, which she says she has placed in a frustratingly inaccessible area. This is to remind visitors that one of the main problems with Lesotho is its location. Nestled in the heart of South Africa, the country

is the highest in the world – over 1,000 metres above sea level – making the landlocked land, unbelievably difficult to access. Aid struggles to gets through, and with the world’s highest rates of HIV/ AIDS, Lesotho faces an uncertain future. But this project is about shining light on the crisis and hopefully making it better, so we turn our attention to more a light-hearted design, the ‘Heart and Crown Terrace’. Positioned in the centre of the garden, Jinny based it on a pattern

ART&CULTURE

she saw on one of the Basotho blankets, ubiquitously worn all year round by the people of Lesotho. ‘Seeing as Prince Harry set up the charity in memory of his mother, and the hearts and crown motif was her favourite, it seemed a pretty straightforward link. I think that’s what Harry’s trying to do with this charity – continue his mother’s work. He set it up, don’t forget, in his gap year at 19. It’s palpable that he’s very passionately involved. He cares very much about the state of these poor kids, whole generations who don’t have parents. We were talking about that when I met him.’ I am reminded of an article I read recently where Jinny was quoted as saying Prince Harry sent her gardening notes on the project all the way from Camp Bastion. This couldn’t be true, surely? ‘No, it wasn’t really true!’ Jinny laughs. ‘What happened was I sent my garden ideas to Camp Bastion, but the files were too big and to get through to their cracked server. So we had to shrink them all down and send them again. When I met him afterwards, he was very, very thorough. He’s like his father. He goes through things meticulously, no question. And he

makes notes! He was very up to speed with it all and knew what was happening and was very interested. But in terms of the design, he’s let me do my job.’ She talks about a clover incorporated into the garden, that ‘just so happens’ to be called ‘William’. ‘Everyone got very excited about it,’ she says smiling, and I chuckle as I remember another sentence in the aforementioned article: ‘includes the ‘William plant’ in tribute to his brother’. With the show fast approaching, and the obvious royal links, media interest in her project is surely going to accelerate. ‘I think it’s great for Sentebale,’ she says. ‘It’s not a fundraiser for them, but it’s a profile-raiser. Someone told me once, doing Chelsea is the equivalent of doing £4.5million worth of advertising. And on top of this, we’ve made a little BBC film of my trip to Lesotho. We want people to see the country for themselves, and note how unlike other parts of Africa it is – no zebras, lions or giraffes. Just sheep, cows, chickens. That is my personal propaganda for the project.’ So turn on, tune in, dear readers, and seek out the garden at Chelsea. It’s time the forget-me-not kingdom, becomes the forgotten-not land.

BLUE JEAN

BABY Boutique owner, Donna Ida, talks to Absolutely about her love of jeans and Yves Saint Laurent

You’re from Australia originally – did you grow up there? Yes I grew up in Sydney with my mum, dad and sister.

When did you move to England?

to achieve just one thing each day. Bit by bit, I started to make it. It has been such a journey for me, now four boutiques, and an online business later, I felt it was the right time to launch my own clothing brand, IDA.

I first visited London in 1997 while I was touring Europe. I finally came to live here in 1999, taking advantage of the working holiday visa that was available to Australians – it felt like my ticket to freedom and fashion. I love London and am proud to call it my home.

have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity – all I hope for in my clothes.’

What are you favourite styles – flares/skinny etc.. Skinny jeans are the most versatile. You can easily dress them up with heels, or more casually with flats. Flares are also amazing, especially in summer in a vintage shade. I wear mine with super high platforms for a seventies feel.

Do you have a favourite pair? This season it would have to be the perfect skinny jeans in a faded mid-blue colour, like IDA Ivy Skinny jeans in Bright Vintage. Current/ Elliott The Roller are the perfect slouchy fit boyfriend jeans for summer worn with high heels or converse at the weekends. Leather has become a staple in my wardrobe and I keep my J Brand Leather Leggings on hand all year round.

Where did your love affair with jeans begin? I have always loved wearing jeans; they’re an easy, modern day essential. After I moved to the UK, I worked in a big marketing company and one day I went to a department store to look at a pair of jeans I’d seen online. When I got there, I didn’t get the help or advice I was looking for. That’s when a friend said to me, ‘You should open up a store that just sells jeans.’ It was my lightning bolt moment and ‘Donna Ida’ was born.

What was it like starting your own brand, IDA?

Whilst obviously setting up one’s own company will have its ups and downs, has the road been predominantly smooth or rocky?

What should a good pair of jeans do?

The hardest part was in the beginning. Having an idea is one thing – turning it into reality is quite another. I knew I was at the bottom of a mountain and that I had no choice but to climb. So instead of focusing on the summit, I just looked one metre ahead at a time, and forced myself

They should make you feel cool, modern and sexy. I love what Yves Saint Laurent said, I have it on the walls of all my boutiques: ‘I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They

The idea for IDA actually came from one of my customers called Jeanie who I’ve known since I opened my first boutique in Chelsea. She loves a high-waist and I just didn’t have enough options for her. I felt I was letting her down, and so she suggested I started my own line, and the rest is history!

Tell us about the designs… IDA is a high-waisted denim collection with luxurious, classic separates. The brand is named after my middle name, Ida, which is my grandmother’s name.

44

STYLE I imagine the jeans as real characters, all sitting around drinking tea together! There are six different styles in the collection starting with Jeanie, the cigarette leg, who was the inspiration for the collection.

It’s rumoured you can select the perfect pair of jeans for someone, just by looking at them – is this true?! It is. In fact all the Donna Ida girls could do the same. It is all about an individual body shape and the fit and fabrication of the jeans. We have a service in every boutique called a Denim Clinic where you can book in for a one-to-one session with an advisor.

What types of jeans suit which body shapes? There is a style to suit each figure. For example, most people can wear skinny jeans – but a pear shape might like a high-rise to really nip them in on the waist as it is the smallest part of their body, whereas an apple shape would prefer a mid-rise pair of jeans for a more comfortable fit with more stretch to fit perfectly on their slim legs.

We’re very excited about the re-opening of your Chelsea store. Why did you choose the area for your flagship shop? I researched several different places before settling on the Draycott Avenue location as it was my favourite area to shop. I love the energy and the other retailers in the area.

You are a Patron of Jeans for Genes – what does this charity mean to you? I am so proud of the work that they do to help children with genetic disorders. This year we’re raising money through a 5k run, and our ‘Denim Drive’ – people return their old jeans to us in exchange for a £20 voucher.

What are your future plans? Re-designing our website, my second IDA collection... so much! Donna Ida, 106 Draycott Avenue, SW3, 020 7225 3816; donnaida.com. Donate to Jeans for Genes at: jeansforgenesday.org 45

T

he Royal Family has always been known as both patrons and collectors of the Fine Arts. A visit to royal residences, such as Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, reveals the vast scale of inherited art, but a lesserknown facet of the family is their clear artistic gene. This hitherto untold story is what captured filmmaker Margy Kinmonth’s attention two years ago, and inspired her to produce and direct a new documentary film entitled ‘Royal Paintbox’. Margy, herself a trained artist and sculptor, stumbled across Queen Victoria’s much-used painting kit at an exhibition at the Tate Gallery, saying of it, ‘I was irresistibly drawn to the story behind it.’ She wrote a postcard to HRH The Prince of Wales the next day, asking his thoughts and received, ‘almost by return of post,’ a ten page handwritten

letter enthusing about the idea and an invitation to tea at Clarence House. ‘After a long wait in a drawing room surrounded by ticking clocks and riveting mementos of royal life, we spent an hour talking about his family’s artistic heritage. I knew at that point it was going to be the most fantastic journey – if one could get over the logistics of working with a senior public figure.’ The resulting collaboration is a sumptuous journey through the royal creative gene. Beginning with embroidery worked by Mary Queen of Scots during her long imprisonment, down via the ethereal sculptures of Queen Victoria’s ‘modern’ daughter, Princess Louise, the documentary voyages to the 21st century and includes the first major interview of publicityshy Lady Sarah Chatto, daughter of Princess Margaret and herself, a serious working artist. Seen surrounded by bold canvases in her Chelsea studio, Lady Sarah pays tribute to her mother’s little known talent, as witnessed by a set of

striking blue Spode china, designed by The Princess. ‘When she was little, she was surrounded by all these beautiful things and I think she wanted to pass something down to my brother [David Linley] and me,’ she says. ‘She was very artistic and had an amazing brain.’ Following in the family tradition, Prince Charles has also been prolific watercolourist. Never formally trained (his first teacher was Prince Philip), his response to art was instinctive, as he explains in the documentary. ‘I must have been about 14-years-old. Suddenly all the pictures on the walls and the furniture came into focus. They had just been blurred backgrounds, which were just there. Then suddenly, I started properly looking.’ This love of art has meant The Prince has recorded most of his foreign trips. Due to time constraints, since 1985 he has taken an artist with him to capture the travels, at his own expense. ‘Painting is so much more fascinating in posterity terms than photographs,’ he explains.

56

ROYAL PAINTBOX.indd 56

ART&CULTURE

‘And it keeps the tradition in The Royal Collection going.’ Former tour artist, Susannah Fiennes, provides her perspective on The Prince’s creative passion, after accompanying him to such diverse places as the Sultanate of Oman. ‘So much of the time he’s on duty. Painting allows him a little moment for quiet reflection, and also a bit of investigation into things at a deeper level than his whirlwind existence normally allows.’ In the course of filming, Margy accompanied The Prince of Wales on his Australian tour and was staggered by the sheer volume of travelling fitted in. ‘Quantas very kindly subsidised me and my crew to go out and follow The Prince. We had something like sixteen flights in total! Watching his sheer unflappable professionalism, and the way he engaged intuitively with every single person he came into contact with, was a real eye opener for me.’ We are shown something of that sensitivity in lingering shots of The Prince

wandering alone on the vast acres of the Balmoral estate and, as he grows more comfortable with the camera, are privy to what feels like his all too rare solitary moments with the paintbrush. ‘Painting is almost meditative,’ he says, tellingly, ‘in the sense that you enter another world. It’s most extraordinary. Everything else is excluded.’

“Watching Prince Charles’ sheer unflappable professionalism... was a real eye opener” Such revealing glimpses into her subjects’ lives are grist to the mill for Margy Kinmonth. With her partner Maureen Murray, Margy set up Foxtrot Films in the eighties, beginning with a portrait of playwright Stephen Berkoff. First introduced to filmmaking during her time at Byam Shaw School of Art, Margy

has delighted in going behind the scenes of such closed off worlds as Haute Couture (1996), where she filmed the famously recitient heiress Daphne Guinness at home with her grandmother Diana Mitford’s 1930s couture creations. She is candid about her desire to ‘cut things through the middle and tell them from an essentially artist’s perspective.’ Engagingly modest and direct, Margy has led a colourful life. She became a member of Chelsea Arts Club whilst still at art school – ‘long before it was trendy’ – thanks to a bohemian Admiral grandfather who was a close friend of Welsh painter, Augustus John. As our delightful afternoon together draws to us a close, I ask Margy about her next project. ‘I am working on a portrait of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg,’ she says, before pausing. Her eyes contain a hint of mischief. ‘But what I would really love to do is work on a film with Sasha Baron Cohen… I happen to know he loves art. And that would really be quite something.’ 57

BRIGHT FUN

BLING

Author Louise Fennell talks to Edwina Langley about dressing the stars, discovering writing and why she won’t ever do jewellery design

L

ouise Fennell, I have decided, has my ideal laugh. I was introduced to it just seconds after our interview began. It is deep and throaty, and tells of wild parties, revelry and stories. The sort of laugh you’d imagine Jerry Hall to have, with an English intonation. So when Louise mentions that she once worked in the shop of designer, Thea Porter, where ‘The Stones, Rod Stewart... and everyone,’ were constantly ‘coming in,’ that throaty laugh of experience reveals its history. ‘At that point, Thea was at the height of her fame,’ says Louise over the telephone from her flat in Chelsea, where (unbeknown to me at the time) she is sitting on the kitchen table (she has a move pending and there aren’t any chairs). ‘Her clothes were unbelievably beautiful, and her clients were people like Barbara Streisand and Elizabeth Taylor. I got to work in LA quite a bit and also Paris. It was like being transported into heaven, really – smoking all day, that sort of thing. That was the time where you used to sit around endlessly in shops. People would come in to buy clothes and then not leave and have drinks... it was GREAT!’ Starting life in a farm, on a mountain in Wales, Louise Fennell, or the ‘Queen of Bling’ as she is sometimes known (owing to the fact her husband is legendary jewellery designer, that ‘King of Bling’, Theo Fennell), had an ‘incredibly rural childhood.’

Her father was a farmer and subsequently an agricultural journalist, so her earliest years were spent in the great outdoors. But on taking a trip to London at seven years old, she fell in love with it. ‘I tormented my mother for years about wanting to be in London. I suppose one is more town or country, more at home in one than the other. It was definitely London for me.’ In her late teens she made the move and started work as a secretary for The Economist – ‘I was the worst secretary in the world, just so bad’ – but following an introduction from her uncle, landed the job with Thea Porter. Seven years later and Louise got itchy feet. She left to pursue a career as a photographer’s agent, or rather, her neighbour was a photographer’s agent and suggested she do it too. ‘All of my jobs have been completely random,’ she laughs, ‘but tremendously good fun.’ From photography, came fashion, and her own discount designer sales business, conceived to give her something flexible to do, whilst raising her daughters, actress, Emerald, and designer, Coco. Whilst her business still very much thrives today, it is her most recent career move – into the world of writing – that has earned her critical acclaim and is the reason behind our conversation today. ‘I have always adored writing, it just never occurred to me that I could do it. But I have been writing for the last ten years – film and television ideas. Dead Rich started as a television idea but then it morphed into a novel.’

ART&CULTURE

And a very successful one it is too. Published in 2012, the dark comedy hit the bestsellers list, and with Stephen Fry and Hugh Grant as fans, it’s little wonder she has penned a sequel. Continuing to follow the lives of celebrity family, the Spenders, Fame Game sees this eccentric family unit uproot from town to country, to evade the ever-watchful eye of the paparazzi and to plot their comeback. ‘My characters seem to live their own lives, I’m just there to jot it down. I take no responsibility for them, by the way. Or their terrible swearing...’ But I wonder if perhaps, she can identify with them. Not with their immorality or law-defying behaviour, evidently, but with a host of A-list celebrity friends, Louise can’t surely be so far removed from the pressures of being ‘a somebody’. At this though, she screams with laughter. ‘I’m not in the public eye at all! I’m not anybody and I don’t think anybody thinks that I am! I don’t relate to any of my characters. I mean...’ she trails off and sighs in frustration. ‘Well you have to identify with some of your characters or you couldn’t really write them, could you? But no, actually, I don’t think I am any of them. Though it’s for you to judge...’ She’s currently writing the third instalment (of which she gives nothing away – ‘it’s very secret’) but I wonder what

LOUIS BANKS

“I’m not anybody and I don’t think anybody thinks that I am!”

else might be in store for the self-professed ‘random job’ seeker? A stint in jewellery design, like her husband, perhaps? ‘I’ve never thought of myself as a designer in any way. Jewellery design is more like engineering than a creative art. It’s not something you can just dabble in or squiggle on a bit of paper. I think some people think that’s what it is. But it’s not. And besides, I happen to think my husband is the greatest jeweller of his generation. So I wouldn’t want to get into conflict with him at any point now, would I?’ And there it is again, that wicked laugh. I wonder if perhaps I’ve misspelt her name; Louise ‘Fun-nell’ seems far more fitting.

SPA REVIEW | THE REFINERY AT HARRODS I felt a bit of a fraud cycling down the gilded streets of Knightsbridge for a Sports Therapy Massage. Spas, with their aspiration to sybaritic perfection, don’t feel like a legitimate place to spend time if you’ve just scoffed a cheese sarnie. However, the tyranny of the towelling robe was swept aside by the polite, professional greeting and the precision and quality of the therapeutic treatment. More clinical than luxurious, I was given a form to write down my list of ailments – regurgitated from a

physio appointment some hours earlier. I was asked to distinguish between green pain and red pain as the therapist raised herself above me and set to work on the afflicted area. Soon enough, pleasure was zapping through my leg as she kneaded my ‘muttonous’ left thigh back in to shape. A definite must for anyone in need of high-quality muscular therapy. By Ed Barrow. FATHER

FIGURE Designer and style magnate Tom Ford talks to Danny Bowman about fatherhood and a shift of focus

baby changes everything, even when you’re a multimillionaire fashion designer and pop culture powerhouse like Tom Ford. Along with his publishing mogul partner, Richard Buckley, the impossibly handsome former saviour of Gucci and YSL bid a fond farewell to the hopelessly decadent lifestyle of dinners at J Sheekey and drinks at Harry’s Bar, with the arrival of baby, Jack. ‘My life has completely changed, completely changed for the better,’ he fondly muses, glowing at the mention of his young son, who was born via a surrogate mother, last September. ‘Before his arrival, my days were spent quite selfishly, if I’m honest. But now, everything is different.’ ‘I feed him, change his nappies, play with him... that’s now the first two or three hours of my day. Then I go to work, finish as quickly as I can and rush back to him. I didn’t have a child just to fulfil some ambition of mine, then hand him over to someone else. I’ve always

wanted a family so it’s important that I’m there and present to raise him; that’s what having a family is all about. And I couldn’t be happier.’ Ford is a businessman who could rival the power of Donald Trump, an all-round monolith of prowess and influence in the global luxury market. Fascinated by fashion and beauty from an early age, the young Texan boasted a flare for fashion experimentation, encouraged by his mother, Shirley. ‘She was this incredible essence of style, it fascinated me how well put together my mother always looked,’ he remembers. Relocating to New York, he dabbled briefly in commercial modelling before moving to Paris to intern at Chloé, eventually leading to positions at Cathy Hardwick and Perry Ellis in the States. Taken on by Gucci, at the time, a struggling luxury goods label seeking to resurrect past glories, Ford was hired as the company’s chief women’s readyto-wear designer, and quickly set about rejuvenating the faded brand. Ascending to Creative Director by 1994, he went on to work his creative artisan on Yves Saint Laurent before establishing his own label in 2004. The Tom Ford label has flourished and strengthened in its nine year ascension in the fashion industry and it was a moment of special poignancy when he finally came face to face with his name on a product. ‘The first thing I ever saw my name on was a pair of sunglasses in

about 2005. Before that my name had always been attached to a label like Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, so that really meant something to me.’ Every luminary in the Hollywood Hills is a fan from the Brangelinas to Rihanna, Timberlake to Halle Berry, and even on-screen, his fetching cuts and lines are sported by Daniel Craig in Skyfall and Colin Firth in Ford’s celebrated directorial debut A Single Man. Consequently, his first project behind the camera met with accolades that the more seasoned of directors would be have been delighted to receive. The 51-year-old’s recent success at London Fashion Week in the opulence of Lancaster House, showcased a creative prowess, borrowing from Lichtenstein where he unveiled sweeping floor-length gowns detailed with ‘kapow’ prints and a moody colour palette. Critics swooned and fawned in equal measure. But not so much the man himself who, it seems, would like the fashion seasons to be rather less restrictive in terms of their punishing regularity. ‘It would be great to put out a collection when you felt like it. Really, it would mean ‘Hey I’m inspired,’ he wisely explains. ‘There needs to be a change now but you have to look at reality. We have stores and a lot of people work in those stores. Customers need to see new merchandise so there has to be a cycle, but it would be wonderful if there was a change. I guess I want more time

because I really want the clothes to last forever. If something is good, it’s good. I want to create things that people keep. I want the best fabric, the best stitching, the best colours and the best cut. I try to make people look as beautiful and as best they can.’ After selling his Mayfair townhouse last summer for an undisclosed amount – although rumours suggest a rather astonishing £50million – Ford is still on the lookout for new digs. This is in spite of the fact he already has a three-storey Chelsea mansion, as well as properties in Manhattan, Milan, Los Angeles and New Mexico. Frequently spotted at several locations around South Kensington, it’s possible the Texan may be considering a new property in those environs. Ford, however, needs to be within a certain distance of his favourite London spots, even if baby Jack has reduced how often he frequents them! ‘I eat at the same restaurants in London – Scott’s, No. 35, J. Sheekey, Mark’s Club, Harry’s Bar, or Cut at 45 Park Lane. If I am meeting someone for drinks first, I always like to go to the Fumoir at Claridge’s, but like I mentioned before, it doesn’t happen quite as much with family now. Mayfair was wonderful because Richard and I were in walking distance of everywhere. When we would come home from a night out, we would walk the dogs around Grosvenor Square, but we no longer have that luxury anymore. Instead we have something infinitely more rewarding.’ Tom Ford’s Sloane Street store opens later this year. 69

ummer is (finally) coming and as a nomadic foreigner, I can attest that nobody does summer quite like the Brits! The soft , rolling English countryside is appealing to the eye and rituals like Pimms in the pub, strawberries and cream at world class sporting events, and getting muddy at music festivals, make the most of what summer here has to offer. From Liberty’s signature floral print make-up bags to AERIN’s beautiful Floral Illuminating Powder (rose scented no less!), florals are everywhere. Maybe it’s just that everyone loves flowers or perhaps it’s the bursting energy that comes with the first really warm, sunny day of spring… My personal favourite variation of the theme (and yes, I am biased) is vintage maven and member of the rock ‘n’ roll Primrose Hill set, Pearl Lowe’s limited edition floral design for Glossybox. A gorgeous black and white illustration of tea roses on a pastel apricot base, the collectible box epitomizes the English summer. FLORAL FANCY

A collection of wide-width sheers and lightweight linens, featuring soft, painterly florals and fashion inspired abstracts, all with a beautiful drape and soft, supple handle. Hang in any room, kitchen or bedroom to create a softedge and light interior. From £80 per metre, various London stockists, 01623 756 699; romoblack.com

LIGHT UP

Hand-assembled in Oxford from the finest aluminum, this Original BTC pendant light design is inspired by traditional factory fittings from one of the forerunners of industrial style, Peter Bowles. These beautifully unprocessed lights are made by hand-spun sheet metal (in Britain) with a cotton braided cable, and would make an interesting piece for the kitchen above a breakfast bar or equally above the main table itself. The BB1 range is shown here in Aluminum with Satin Paint Interior and is available in a range of colours. £159, 228 Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, SW10, 020 7351 2130; davey-lighting.co.uk

GET STIRRING

The very talented Kenyanborn textiles designer Kirsten Hecktermann makes these beautiful bone and African hardwood serving spoons, perfect for elegant al fresco dining. All her spoons are hand-carved, and the wood used is from cuts that would otherwise have been discarded. Best of all, part of the profits go towards turtle conservation. £8 each; kirstenhecktermann.com

LOVE HANDLES

As American architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said, ‘God is in the detail,’ and I agree. Hence why I adore the House of Eroju’s leather door handles. Each is made in their London studios from vegetable tanned leather, and comes in a range of colours. My favourite is this woven leather handle in antique tan. £320 a pair, 4 Burke House, Hope Street, SW11, 020 7738 9374; houseoferoju.com

TRELLIS FENCING

MIRRORS

P L A N T E R S & P OT S

Trellis fencing lends privacy to your garden and gives it a polished structural look. I tend to use hardwood as it lasts longer and the colour ages to a more pleasing greyish red. You can either buy off-the-shelf sections in square or diamond mesh from The Chelsea Gardener or get a custom-made horizontal trellis in Western Red Cedar through Charlie Day Gardens. The Chelsea Gardener, 125 Sydney Street, SW3, 020 7352 5656; chelseagardener.com

Great optical trickery can be played on gardens with mirrors. They can seem larger and lighter, which most London gardens welcome. Mirrors are versatile in that they’re slim and can be cut to all sorts of shapes. The French House has some quirky pieces such as these Cog Mirrors (£950 each, 103cm diameter), which would look great on garden walls. The French House, 41-43 Parsons Green Lane, SW6, 020 7371 7573; thefrenchhouse.co.uk

Pick planters to reflect your style. Remember, there are plenty for sale that aren’t terracotta! For a contemporary look, you might use a straight-sided cube or a painted galvanised rectangular trough. Faux-lead planters made in lightweight Fibreclay are a good substitute. The Chelsea Gardener offer a variety of sizes and a good range of styles for you to choose from too. The Chelsea Gardener 125 Sydney Street, SW3, 020 7352 5656, chelseagardener.com

PLANTING Light, water and exposure to the elements are key when planting, as is selection, for year round colour. Use structural evergreen plants to form the base of the design, then interplant with perennials giving colour, fragrance, form and texture. Hydrangea petiolaris, Trachelospermum jasminoides and Hosta ‘Halcyon’ all do well in shaded areas. For inspiration, head to Bowdens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. 01837 840 989; bowdenhostas.com

GARDEN SCULPTURE Sculpture and gardens is an ancient marriage - from flowing abstract pieces to classical figures. Using one as a focal point on a plinth or wall, partially hidden among plants or perched in a tricky shaped corner, works well. I often sculpt in pairs for clients’ gardens to create symmetry. Marble Head Study of Michelangelo’s David (pictured, right) by Charlie Day, Charlie Day Gardens

LIGHTING Lighting your garden allows for al fresco evening entertaining. Go with high-end downlighting like Hunza Wall Spots from GA Lighting, or for a more rustic look, lanterns (johnlewis.com). I’d advise a combination of light sources, to add depth and atmosphere. Firepits (pictured, right) omit heat and lend a nostalgic, warm feel. Michelin-star chef, Atul Kochhar, talks 10 years of Benares, why he shunned medical school and his love for cheese on toast

CHEF Q&A.indd 87

26/04/2013 14:28

‘‘LONDON IS SUCH AN EXCITING PLACE FOR INTERNATIONAL CUISINE’’ arrived in London in 1994. At that time people’s perception of Indian food was ‘curry’ and that was just about the extent of it! Today, however, London is such an exciting place for international cuisine and people are much more open-minded and are willing to try all different types of cuisine.

Benares is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. What does this mean to you? This is a big milestone for me and for the Benares team. As my first solo venture there was always a risk. To see a restaurant that you have put so much dedication into grow and succeed is a big accomplishment. The 10th anniversary means that we get to celebrate all the

hard work that has been invested into the restaurant for the last 10 years. It also helps give us motivation to continue in the future.

How do you think you personally have changed these perceptions? It’s not just me! I think in general people’s perceptions are changing and this is due to the collective effort of many different chefs and restaurants across all cuisines. But I suppose guests of Benares may change their ideas about Indian food based on my ethos. I grew up in India and I cook modern Indian food with British ingredients, so I don’t necessarily adapt to European sensibilities but I am inspired by its produce and cooking methods. Spices are a central ingredient in most of my dishes and I believe that they add depth and interest to each, especially in the UK.

How do you think public perception of Indian food has changed in Britain over the last few decades? The food industry in Britain and in Europe is very different from when I

Do you add ‘personality’ to your dishes? I think personality comes through from my experiences. I took my influences and merged them with my knowledge and have created food that I think is

88

CHEF Q&A.indd 88

26/04/2013 20:40

FOOD&TRAVEL

interesting. I also use ingredients that represent my ethos. I travel to India several times a year and although I grew up there, it’s a constant learning curve, because everything is changing so quickly. I also travel a lot to the UAE and other parts of Asia which is very inspiring. At the moment I have a restaurant in Dubai, Rang Mahal, and creating a menu there is fascinating. You were the first Indian Chef to receive a Michelin-star at Tamarind. What do you think the secret was to your success here? As a chef I don’t think our work is ever done or that success is a finite point. The star was achieved and we have kept it for the last seven years based on a lot of hard work and dedication. Favourite dish on the menu at Benares? Chicken Tikka Pie is one of my signature dishes and I think it grabs the attention of most guests, because it merges India and English cooking perfectly. My personal favorite is my Meen Alleppey, which is Pan-Roasted Line & Hook Caught Brixham Cod, served with Coconut and Curry Leaf Sauce. I went to Brixham with our Head Chef, Sameer, and we spend the whole day at the market and out fishing. So I know every aspect of this dish – where the fish is sourced, how it gets to me, and what it ends up looking like n the plate. What’s the secret to the perfect curry? Spices and time! If you hadn’t become a chef, what do you think you would be doing now? My parents would have preferred for me to become a doctor and at one point in my life I held acceptance letters to medical school, as well as culinary school, in either hand. However, I always knew what my passion was so I made the decision to become a chef. You do a lot of work with children’s charities, for example Bernados, Save the Children and GOSH. Why are these charities particularly close to your heart? All the charities I work with are very

important to me and most of them focus on health and well-being. Food is the main source of health and so many people in this world are without it. The charity projects I am a part of always promote how to make people’s lives better. The person who has influenced you most, both professionally and personally? My father is the strongest influence in my life. He was a caterer and I grew up in a household that was centered around food, whether it was my dad’s work or my mum’s cooking. I was exposed to spices at a very young age, growing up in India, and I believe that has strongly shaped my career as a chef. My dad also instilled my love of local and sustainable products. I only had local and sustainable food growing up so I wouldn’t have it any different in Benares. What’s your vice in life? When I’m not travelling or at Benares I am sneaking in some quiet time with really simple food that I don’t have to cook. Cheese on toast is perfect! How do you see Indian cuisine evolving in the next decade? London is such an exciting place at the moment and I think Indian food can really flourish in an environment like this. I think you’ll start seeing a lot more localised Indian dishes as well as more street food. What’s next for Atul Kochhar? There’s always something new and exciting around the corner and at the moment I am working on a project in India, which I hope to complete by next year. I am also in the process of adding another restaurant to one of Carnival Cruise ships. This will be on the Venture Cruise ship and the menu will be based on my travels around South East Asia, so there will be a lot of new and exciting flavors for guests to try!

BAR BOULUD

I

often feel like a glutton. So when organising reviews, I’m careful to invite people in front of whom I won’t feel embarrassed eating like one. Thank goodness, therefore, that I chose an old university friend to accompany me to Bar Boulud. Situated discreetly under the Mandarin Oriental, its cosy brasserie-like feel means a cooling White Cosmo is immediately in order. Renowned for its burgers and pâtés, we knew they’d be good, so we embraced the rest of the menu. Through a clever process of ‘dithering’, my friend selected what I originally announced I was ordering – the crab salad and steak tartare with chips. So I opted for the equally delicious-sounding snails followed by scallops. In truth, I could have eaten both. The crab was wonderfully plentiful; none of that ‘suffocating under a mound of avocado’ nonsense. My snails were drowning in glorious garlic butter, which I would have uncouthly drunk straight from the bowl had not I been stationed near the bread basket. The steak tartare was as smooth as edible velvet, as were my scallops. For pudding I had the Gâteau Basque – there are no words – and my friend, the red praline tart (no words there either). Full yet? Nope! We were offered some madeleines to ‘try’, and I stoically said I’d taste one… and then subsequently ate the entire basket. Yes, I waddled out of Bar Boulud, a glutton. And I’d waddle back for more any day. By Edwina Langley. 66 Knightsbridge, SW1, 020 7201 3899; barboulud.com

CHABROT BISTROT D’AMIS

L

ike most Londoners, I have recently been feeling under the weather. Literally under it. The wind has been howling through our streets in such a harsh, aggressive manner I have found it increasingly hard to be cheered by anything. Which was why a night at Chabrot Bistrot d’Amis was entirely in order. Roughly translated as ‘Cafe of Friends’, it is exactly that – like walking into a room filled with your best chums ready to cheer you up. I had selected one of my dear friends to join me in feasting on some of its scrumptious-sounding French cuisine. After an awkward start (they had no record of our reservation and our first course was incorrect and had to be sent back) our dinner was perfectly enjoyable. I had Roquefort, chicory and walnut salad with lemon dressing, which was crunchy and delicious. My friend chose the asparagus

and poached egg, which was still runny in the middle (tick). Next up was the pan-fried salmon, which was supposed to come with artichokes but they had run out, so instead turned up with a fennel salad. Despite my initial disappointment, it was nonetheless fresh and worked well alongside the particularly crispy salmon skin. My companion opted for the steak, sautéed new potatoes (slightly underdone) and watercress with garlic butter. The steak was perfectly rare and did taste incredibly good, melting in the mouth etc. We finished with strawberry ice cream, which was tantalisingly sweet, although, telltale signs of crystallisation implied perhaps it had been refrozen. Playful and quaint, a night at Chabrot Bistrot d’Amis is exactly like a night round your friends’ house. You won’t get Michelin-star cuisine, but that doesn’t matter. Because what you’re really there for is the company. By Rose Langley. 9 Knightsbridge Green, SW1, 020 7225 2238; chabrot.co.uk

BLOOM IN LUNCH

Taking inspiration from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the legendary Tom Aikens has partnered with florist 'Wild at Heart' to create the ‘Lunch in Bloom’ package – a two hour masterclass in bouquet design, followed by a three course set lunch menu. Featuring ‘confit of Loch Duart salmon’ and the ‘Chelsea green cocktail’ (Sipsmith gin, elderflowers syrup and viola), it’s hard to imagine a more mouthwatering midday feast. £120 per person. We can think of little else that excites our taste buds more than the idea of a mozzarella bar. The brainchild of the family-run Made In Italy group, Mozzarella&More is a trattoria, just two doors down the King’s Road from its sister restaurant, Made In Italy. The only London-based restaurant to produce its own cheeses, this little eatery features such tantalising dishes as ‘burrata with aromatic ricotta’ and ‘buffalo mozzarella with spicy salami’. In the absence of a dairy, we suggest this as the place to go. 275 King’s Road, SW3, 020 7351 2417; madeinitalygroup.co.uk

FOOD&TRAVEL THE GARDEN

The garden at the Rectory Hotel is no afterthought. Flowers line the borders and dogs and children are free to play on the grass while adults sip cool drinks at one of the nearby tables. In one corner, a ‘secret garden’ style gate leads to a discreetly hidden (and thus all the more magical) extra: a perfect blue swimming pool. Here you can bathe and soak up the sun away from prying eyes – and when you’re fully bronzed? Take a walk around the front lawns, which are dotted with playful sculptures and works of art, and which look out over the village of Crudwell – a place so pretty that you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d stepped into The Darling Buds of May.

ENGLAND’S DREAMING THE BEDROOM

The twelve bedrooms have been individually designed, but all are large and elegantly furnished with a mixture of contemporary pieces and antiques. Our bed was an imposing four-poster that nonetheless left ample space for our dog to frolic in front of the fireplace. The bathroom was massive, a gloriously airy elegy boasting dual sinks and a classic white and chrome colour scheme. Our views were of the garden, where honey bees tumbled among the late summer blooms and songbirds stopped to drink from the pretty pond. All in all, a soothing and comfortable haven from city life.

THE HOTEL

The Rectory is an ideal rural retreat, an old country house brimming with books, nooks and English charm. Its contemporary take on classic Cotswolds living means you can enjoy all the little luxuries of a modern hotel stay (including in-room health and beauty therapies) while reconnecting to the gentler pace of life in what’s been called the ‘heart of England’. Visit during summer: the house’s beautiful gardens and pool are a blessing on a sunny day. A stay here is like a trip into the idyllic, sun-hazy houses at the heart of so many 20th century children’s novels: enchanting.

THE RESTAURANT

On the ground floor of the Rectory, leading out to the garden, sits a real foodiemagnet: the Dining Room. Lucky guests can enjoy a tantalising homemade breakfast as well as sumptuous suppers here, all prepared under the direction of head chef Peter Fairclough. The menu focuses on local, organic and foraged produce, and food can be

Guests seeking a slightly less formal environment can also head a hundred feet over the road to the wonderfully cosy Potting Shed pub, which shares its owners with the hotel. The menu there is geared more towards informal pub dining – but is no less delicious for it.

GET THERE

The Rectory is situated three miles from Kemble Station, which is 70 minutes by train from London Paddington. Driving is very easy and the lawn is also large enough for helicopter landings too!

Mystic River From Shanghai to Guilin, Priscilla Pollara discovers China’s two different faces

97

May_CHINA.indd 97

26/04/2013 19:34

I

t was a humid, grey day, and the whole world seemed to be on the roads. On the ten-lane highway that streamed out from Pudong International, not only did the drivers of unnecessarily large vehicles seem in an interminable rush, but they appeared happy enough to jostle illegally for tarmac space. But once Shanghai’s vertiginous skyscrapers began to emerge from behind the impenetrable mist, it was obvious we were all headed in the very same direction. The city is split into two and the Huangpu River does the dividing. The Eastern side is Pudong, where I was myself staying at the marvellous Pudong Shangri-la Hotel, while Puxi is the other bank. It’s not hard to differentiate the two: Pudong is where you’ll find the modern buildings which make up the impressive Shanghai skyline, while Puxi contains the historical quarters, including the trendy French Concession. After a few hours refreshing myself, I left Pudong for Puxi by crossing the river on a ferry to the world-famous Bund. The Bund, or the embankment, is a stage – when I was there, a quartet of middle-aged women were standing on individual platforms performing a Tai Chi routine, a saxophonist played on a stool beside them, a cluster of old ladies chatted while they de-shelled a bucket of crawfish, whilst hundreds of people were snapping away, keen to capture at least some of the magnificent backdrop. Also among the crowds were identikit justmarried couples (I counted twenty-two), all decked out in Kate Middleton replica dresses and surrounded by friends throwing petals in the air. Weddings are big here. The Bund isn’t remarkably beautiful, but it is here that Chinese tourists, Shanghai locals and foreign visitors revel

in quite how the various strands of this great metropolis have, over time, come together to create the enigmatic and unstoppable machine it is today. One need only look at the buildings on Pudong: the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Centre loom down as representatives of the moneyspinning part of the city. Meanwhile on Puxi, the Neo-Classical, Baroque and several Art Deco influences on several of the height-restricted buildings, including the former Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation and The Shanghai Club, evoke a long heritage.

We may now know Shanghai, home to over 20 million, as an economic powerhouse, but often neglected is the fact that it was once a world leader in 1920s. When China lost the First Opium War, Shanghai became an open port and saw international settlers open concessions here. The city benefited economically, but much of its modernday infrastructure harks back to those early days in the 20th century when the city was a breeding ground for business and global influences. A dark spell under Communist rule limited Shanghai from developing further, but of late it has

certainly returned to what it once was. And much more. Thankfully, not all of China is undergoing rapid expansion and change. In fact, Shanghai’s faithful retain of its colonial past is a trait witnessed in other cities. After a somewhat whistle-stop tour of the city where I, amongst other things, enjoyed the shopping crush at Nanjing Road and ate copious amounts of delicious street food – watch out when eating the soup dumpling delicacy xiaolongbao, which explodes in your mouth and burns the tongue – I flew out in a south-westerly direction to Guilin. It’s calm here, and often touted as a Chinese tourist’s haven. It’s easy to see why. The noticeable absence of infrastructure, replaced instead by majestic cone-shaped, emerald green Karst mountains is soothing. Personally, I would never have assimilated such breathtaking topography with mainland China. My hotel, the ShangriLa Guilin, also reflected the change in pace. Where the Pudong was the luxurious multifaceted sanctuary-like hotel constantly ready to unwind any tired businessman, the Shangri-La at Guilin, where distant crickets are heard at night and tuneful birds are ever-present in the orchard and on the terrace, felt certainly more like a resort. With a landscaped garden, two swimming pools, which would no doubt come in handy throughout the tropical summers, and the translucent green Li River flowing just outside this hotel, the Shangri-La in Guilin evokes the same tranquillity the city has in droves. My time in Guilin, unsurprisingly, was spent mostly on or at least, always near to the Li River. On two consecutive days, I was driven along the Osmanthus tree-lined streets (Guilin means ‘Forest of Sweet Osmanthus’) to the Zhuijiang jetty where I boarded a ferry for beautiful Yangshuo. The cruise meanders around the soaring ethereal mountains and their

near-perfect reflection in the crystalclear water. Minute fishing villages appeared to exist at the bottom of these densely forested green peaks, and we must have passed countless fishermen on their rickety bamboo rafts, clad in Asian conical hats. The cruise down this ribbon of water is made famous by the images naturally carved out into the rock. The Elephant Trunk Hill is the best-known, and while others are hard to make out, looking out for them is tradition here. Tradition was what made a later visit to the Yao minority village special – a people from the Guangxi Zhuang region, characterised by their vibrant red-hued clothes, and for women whose anklelength hair can only be cut once married. That particular morning I had hiked up to the Longji rice terraces, built in the Yuan Dynasty over 700 years ago, and over Zongzi – bamboo wrapped rice and bean paste dumplings – looking down from above where a cascading set of terraces formed a ‘dragon’s backbone’ from the ridge of many hills. I was told of the Yao’s daily life, superstitions and dedication to following their ancestors’ norms. Remarkably, and unlike the speed I witnessed in Shanghai, nothing of theirs has changed for centuries. China moves at such an alarming rate, that one can’t help but feel destined to miss out on its latest development.

We, in the financially-hit West, fear this: will we forever be behind? Only time will tell. But five days in China did at least teach me one thing: that no matter how it evolves, its inhabitants, a near 1.5 billion, are just as keen to hold on to what makes this old civilisation one of the most bewitching in the world today. Let’s hope they never let go.

Chance Fix up, look sharp! Absolutely picks its top active breaks from around the world

1. WILDFITNESS 9 DAY KICK START COURSE BARAKA

HOUSE, WATAMU, KENYA

T

o many people a fitness holiday sounds like an oxymoron; holidays are about unwinding and letting go of stress, not compulsory exercise. Admittedly, we too subscribed to this school of thought but Wildfitness is not to be dismissed so easily. The wondrous, indescribable beauty of Watamu in Kenya (one of three locations to choose from) is enough to make the hardiest of sceptics catch their breath on arrival. The luxurious Baraka House, the accommodation provided by Wildfitness, is positioned on what is widely agreed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and goes a long way towards shattering any preconceptions of Spartan discipline and hard work guests may have. Here, the particular brand of exercise too is geared

towards enjoyment and satisfaction rather than ruthless regimentation, and consists of activities such as kick-boxing in the open-air, Dojo and runs on the whitesanded beaches. There is also a strong theme of nature and the way in which fitness is linked to our evolution, as you are taught ‘primal skills’ and shown the foods humans have adapted to eat. Although challenging at times, the wide range of activities and the staggering loveliness of the country leaves you with a sense of mental and physical wellbeing along with a sincere feeling of achievement. What can we say? We’re converts. wildfitness.com

T

he worst that can be said of Stoke Park is that leaving it is really rather a wrench. The stunning country club, spa and hotel set in the heart of Buckinghamshire has provided the location for films such as Goldfinger and Bridget Jones’s Diary and is just as impressive off the screen. The rooms manage to convey a classic style without being stuffy or cloying and the mixture of modern prints on the walls and the sumptuousness of the materials used strike a balance between elegance and a more contemporary edge. Although we may have been tempted to lounge in our lovely room throughout our stay, we would have been missing out on perhaps the most outstanding aspect of the Stoke Park experience. Equipped with a prestigious, professional standard golf course and a multi award-winning ‘Racquet Pavilion’ consisting of four hard courts, three indoor courts and six Wimbledon specification grass courts, the hotel is ideal for those who enjoy active holidays. In recent years, the tennis offered by the Club has become an essential part of the appeal of the resort and has ensured that Stoke Park continues to dominate ‘Top 5 Sporting Hotels in the World’ lists. It also doesn’t hurt that after engaging in a couple of sets you can kick back and relax in their beautiful spa. Park Road, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, SL2 4PG, 01753 717171; stokepark.com

D

on’t let the ‘all-inclusive’ label fool you; this isn’t your standard all-in hotel. For starters, the locale of the club is simply breathtaking – set against mighty hills, the apartments overlook the glistening blue water of the Mediterranean Sea. In the evening, which is when we both arrived and left, it is arguably more akin to a twinkling Turkish village than a luxury 330-room resort. Morning came arm-in-arm with the sun, and with it a fresh view of the club. Staircasing down the hill, the apartments were clearly designed to be as unobtrusive as possible. The enticing beach has its blue flag – a prestigious accolade awarded to only the most eco and beautiful beaches in the world – flying high, whilst the hotel’s speedboats, catamarans and yachts float on the calm, clear water. You can’t help but want to dive in – good news for those looking for an active break. What’s more, with three restaurants to choose from, the food is as good as the view. As expected, on the menu are plenty of grilled fish dishes, as well as nutritious omelettes and fresh salads. Two of the restaurants offer à la carte dining: Pasha on the Bay is open for a light breakfast, with a Mediterranean menu in the evening, and Beach Bar serves a lighter lunchtime buffet and scrumptious Italian cuisine for supper. There are also plenty of activities to keep

kids (both big and small) occupied – think volleyball, yoga, windsurfing, sailing and a range of indulgent spa treatments courtesy of the hotel’s two beautiful spas. However, it’s not just about the kids – there’s also an adult only beach aptly named ‘Silent Beach’, and a crèche-like area where younger kids can play and shout out of earshot. Bliss. Prices start from £118 pp per night for an A Type room on a full board basis. Children under 6 are free, whereas children between the ages 7 and 12 require a small payment of £45. Forward

Marathon season has arrived, so Absolutely’s off to Profeet, the specialist sports laboratory

W

ith marathon season in full swing, it’s time to think about getting those all-important running shoes. Able to make or break your performance in a race, it’s worth investing a bit more time and money into getting the perfect pair. Enter Profeet, a sports laboratory in southwest London which specialises in footwear and custom insoles. Profeet is far more than your average sports shop. Buying here is a handson experience, complete with trained footwear specialists and scientific analysis. What’s more, assessments are by appointment only, ensuring that you get the dedicated, one-to-one attention you need to find the perfect footwear.

development and Profeet works closely with top athletes, helping them fine tune their footwear and gaining valuable feedback in the process. All this knowledge will ensure the right shoe is selected for your foot shape, foot type and your biomechanical movement. And its doesn’t end there as the staff can help you correct bad technique; having lived through the trials and tribulations of high level sport they can advise from experience. It might all sound terribly scientific and you may well be left wondering why exactly you need all this technology and professional advice

Step 1: Your feet and lower body are evaluated with video gait analysis and dynamic foot scans to identify movement patterns and forces acting through the foot. This information determines the degree of cushioning and support you’ll need in your insoles and shoes. Step 2: A mould of your foot is taken using state of the art vacuum technology (imagine a hi-tech footprint in the sand). This is used to custom mould a composite insole to your exact foot shape while you wait. The insole provides the perfect support for your foot and enhances balance by improving contact with the foot and thus increasing muscle activation.

Assessments come in various forms, ranging from a full-blown, hour-and-a half-long‘pro assessment’, with bio-mechanist and podiatrist Paul O’Malley, to a quick twenty minute ‘shoe fit’. Most customers opt for the ‘sports assessment’ which involves some seriously state-of-the-art technology and follows a 3-step process. The technology is impressive, however, the unique selling point for Profeet is its staff. All active in sport, each has a degree from a top university in a relevant field such as sports science, sports rehabilitation, biomechanics and podiatry. For example, footwear manager Richard is not only an ultramarathon runner, but also has a degree in sports science. Profeet staff live and breath footwear and test all the shoes themselves. International shoe manufacturers invite Profeet to consult on new product

if you’re only an amateur runner. However, rest assured it’s worth your while. Even the least committed of runners will benefit from the customised insoles and correct footwear. Not only does it reduce the risk of injury and increases comfort, but it also improves endurance capacity and performance, letting you run that little bit longer and harder – just what every runner needs, regardless of level.

Step 3: The right shoe type and right fit. There are all sorts of running shoes out there and the highly knowledgeable, experienced and qualified Profeet staff will guide you through the process ensuring you end up in the most appropriate shoes. 867-869 Fulham Road, SW6, 020 7736 0046; profeet.co.uk

Design for living The In:Style Direct showroom at Imperial Wharf is now two years old. Absolutely talks to design director Mansi Mehra about the brand’s success at homestaging and interior design

Tell us more about In:Style Direct’s background in interior design. For almost 10 years, we’ve specialised in designing and furnishing interiors for homeowners and rental investors in prime central London. This ranges from complete refurbishment programmes to our trademark range of design-led furnishing packages. We also work with leading property developers furnishing showhomes in new developments across the capital. Increasingly we were being asked by private individuals to stage their homes, this could mean dressing a property to sell, to let, or simply to live in. Why do you think In:Style Direct has developed such a loyal following? We offer designer quality – without the designer price tag. Our furnishings and soft furnishings are not only stylish but well made, but more than that, they offer real value for money. We have our own soft furnishing collections, all designed and manufactured in-house, so with no middleman, we can give a fast turnaround and keep prices

down. The emphasis is on creating a distinctive, high end look but at an affordable price. Why do you think homestaging is becoming so popular? Homestaging helps to sell a property faster – and for the best price. Equally, a property will let more quickly if it is presented as a home where a tenant can picture themselves living. Over 85% of the rental properties we furnish are let within a week. We recently dressed a two bedroom apartment in Lennox Gardens, Chelsea that had remained unlet for 11 weeks, despite being newly refurbished. We furnished it and it got rented the next day at £1,400 per week. In St John’s Wood we staged a three bedroom apartment in a mansion block and it sold for the full asking price within five weeks.

reflects their personality, or they may want to make better use of the space they have without the expense of using an architect. Often clients simply don’t have time to put together a new look themselves. We have a large warehouse where we hold a lot of stock and as we make all our own soft furnishings and window treatments, we’re able to achieve a unique look within a week if need be. Putting your own stamp on a property needn’t cost the earth or take months to bring together. People are rediscovering living on a budget and we want to inspire them. PROPERTY NEWS ALL THE ADVICE AND MORE TO HELP MAKE YOUR MOVE TO THE COUNTRY On Tuesday 14th May 2013, at The Grand Hall, Battersea Arts Centre, SW11, The London Office and leading London agent Douglas & Gordon will once again co-host the annual The Move to the Country Show. Supported by Country Life magazine, 37 of the finest country agents will offer their advice to homeowners planning to make their move out of the Capital. From rectories to country estates, from farmhouses to chocolate box cottages, a broad spectrum of properties will be available for sale and to rent. Bob Bickersteth, Director of The London Office comments: “Following the success of last year’s exhibition, we will be hosting the seventh Move to the Country Show, at the Grand Hall in Battersea. The show is for those who are inquisitive about moving to the country, investing in property outside the capital or simply looking for a different lifestyle. We have noticed an increased emphasis on buyers taking advantage of the price differential between London and the country in order to afford a better quality of life for their families.

WHAT EFFECT WILL THE GOVERNMENT’S PLANS TO KICK-START THE MORTGAGE INDUSTRY HAVE ON THE PROPERTY MARKET?

For further information please contact: Bob Bickersteth, The London Office, 020 7839 0888 or Olivia Quarrelle, Douglas & Gordon, 020 7924 2000

The British are closely wedded to the concept of home ownership and the idea that a property is an investment is heavily engrained in the national psyche. However, the lack of availability of mortgages has made life much more difficult for first time buyers. With this in mind the Government’s recent budget trumpeted two separate policies. Both intended to help the housing market and, they hope, add stimulation and growth to the economy. The first policy involves “new build” property. The construction of new houses needs to be at the rate of around 300,000 p.a. to meet demand, yet the actual rate has been below 100,000 and climbing slowly. The second strand, which is yet to be clarified, does seem intended to be a mechanism for the Government to help mortgage lenders offer high loan to value

mortgages at ‘reasonable’ rates. In central London, where generally buyers have greater levels of equity, the impact will probably be less noticeable than other areas. It seems very likely that sale prices of the lower end properties will increase as a result of the new policy. At the moment we find at least 50% of flat offers come from investors and I suspect that with more owner occupiers able to enter the market the balance will change. If these plans succeed it means that home ownership is available more widely and not just to those who have family backing and large deposits. However, if you are in a position to buy now I would strongly recommend moving before the competition gets greater and prices inflate! Gregory Besterman, Managing Director, 020 7731 3333; sullivanthomas.co.uk rented out for £6,175 – over 25% increase. At current market prices that is a 2.55% gross annual yield. Whilst prices in any market may fluctuate, a 3 bedroom house in Hasker Street cost £2.3mm in 2009 and now sells for £2.95mm - an increase of 25%. A sensible investment? We think so – but you will have to take your own professional advice!

SOUND INVESTMENT

The UK Government recently sold an inflation linked gilt at a yield of negative 1.262% (UK DMO). Inflation is running at 2.8% for March 2013 YOY. Why would professional investors buy this unless they thought inflation would carry on increasing. So how can you mitigate this erosion to your nest-egg? Property Rentals in Central London have increased dramatically since 2009. A house in Hasker Street, Chelsea, commanded £5,630 per month in 2009 and now in 2013

PRICING FOR A SALE

D&G DIARY I’m bored of talking about stock levels, overinflated asking prices and rentals being tougher. So some random thoughts –Savills latest index figures threw up the convenient fact that the average PCL rent is now the same as it was in June 2001 whilst the average PCL sales price is exactly double. I’m not quite sure if that tells you that renting is a bargain or you’re a numpty for not buying. Given it seems that many are simply not going to find anything to buy so why not start a business and rent instead? At least you can be an entrepreneur and stop waffling on about how much your property is worth. Ed Mead , Director, Douglas & Gordon, Chelsea, 020 7225 1225; douglasandgordon.com

April has been another good month with some great sales being achieved and some superb deals being agreed with the intention of rapid exchanges. We have been out appraising and agreeing a wide range of stock too. Local knowledge remains key to understanding the market and what buyers are after. The general problem though remains the same; stock that comes on at too higher level to begin with is likely to struggle later on even after it has been reduced or as some agents might say ‘repositioned within the market place’ - at the end of the day a reduction is a reduction and best avoided if physically possible. I would suggest the best way of doing this is by using an agent that achieves on average 98% of its guide price… Harry Buchanan, Associate Sales Director Jackson Stops & Staff, Pimlico 020 7828 4050; jackson-stops.co.uk

STRIKE WHILE THE IRON’S HOT High levels of buyer demand and a severe stock shortage continue to be the main challenges in the Chelsea market. Buyers from overseas are a dominant force and they often move quicker than domestic purchasers on everything from studios to larger family homes. With values set to climb, investment here will bring strong returns. If you happen to be looking for an exit strategy, the market is as hot as it’s ever been. R

ecently I had the privilege of attending fellow Irishman and legendary rugby player Brian O’Driscoll’s testimonial dinner. A living legend of the game, he has always delivered at the highest level when it has mattered most. His talent, hard work and desire have resulted in a hugely successful career. The inspirational leadership he has always shown has won him fans from all over the world of rugby and beyond. As I watched guests including Prince William and Bono take to their feet in a standing ovation tribute, it showed the magnitude of the respect he has earned. The words of Voltaire echoed in my mind – “By appreciation, we make excellence in others our own property”. I realized that his inspiration had already in some small way influenced my own career to date. My aim has always been to deliver excellence at the highest level and the Prime Central London market is my chosen playing field. My passion and ambition to succeed are as strong as when I first started as an agent and I believe that if you are going to do anything you should aspire to be the best. I feel that my success so far in this industry has simply proven that it is ultimately a people business. People do business with personalities they like, who deliver for them. I look for people with a glint in their eye that signals commitment, determination and passion. Our service is only as good as the team I work with. I always lead by example and will never

ask anyone to do anything that I would not be willing to do myself. To succeed in our market an agent must have an in-depth understanding of the customer’s lifestyle. They must live and breathe the area they work in and be passionate about it. This job is not a 9 to 5 role and many of my most productive meetings can take place “after hours” in local restaurants and bars. As our market is dominated by international clients, it is more important than ever to be globally minded. The worldwide reach of our company is what attracted me to E&V (500 offices!) and it gives us a huge advantage. With 11 languages spoken in our office on a daily basis it can be hard to keep up! I am also a Director of RVE Development where we provide equity and mezzanine finance to developments, as well and identifying opportunities and putting together project teams. This enables me to offer a holistic approach to a project and compliments my agency role perfectly. This added responsibility means that my spare time is precious. Thankfully I still keep a healthy work lifestyle balance as well as maintaining a busy social life. I love to travel to new places and I try to visit my hometown Dublin as often as possible. My career is undoubtedly my main focus but I really believe that timing is everything in life and the time is now.

Tom Ward, Director of aspire talks to one of his clients about the unique development of her two bedroom flat. Where did you draw inspiration from for the overall design of your property? I have been developing in Fulham for many years and I always aim to create properties with unique living space. I want them to include certain aspects and features that stand out above your usual developments in an area. These particular flats in this area of Fulham are individual as they offer space in the basement which can be utilised for something quite special. I wanted to add additional features to this property that

added a bespoke feel and hopefully create a certain style of living. What design aspects did you want to include? Aside from the obvious media room, I wanted to ensure that everything in the property was perfect. This ranged from the skirting which matches the wooden flooring, to the specialist tiles in the bathroom that reflect the LED lighting in exactly the right way.

What are your favourite features now the development is complete? The media room is the real ‘wow’ factor of this property and is obviously not something you would necessarily fi nd in a two bedroom flat in this price range, it is certainly something that would be more abundant in larger houses in areas such as South Park and the Peterborough Estate. The kitchen has been designed with every millimetre taken into consideration, with a bespoke design completed by Smeg appliances. The LED

ASPIRE.ADVERTORIAL.MAY.NEW.indd 2

lights in the bathroom and shower are also a fantastic feature, they show you when the water is the correct temperature for you to step in. How long did the whole development process take? The whole process from start to finish was completed within four months, I have very efficient builders. What, in your opinion, is great about the area around Rosebury Road and Fulham in general? It seems to me that Fulham has been isolated in its own little bubble with prices rocketing at a faster rate than surrounding boroughs. This area in particular seems to have attracted a lot of attention in particular. I don’t know

if this is down to the good pubs or increased accessibility but the South Fulham area and in particular the ‘Bury Triangle’ seems to be a real residential hotspot for families and professionals alike. From a developer’s perspective, do you see Fulham as a good investment? I see it as a great investment! There seems to be an overspill from more central London boroughs such as Kensington and Chelsea, and as a result Fulham is reaping the benefits from foreign investment. Also with many local developments happening across Fulham and particular in the vicinity close to my flat, the attraction for the borough seems to be constantly on the increase. If you can buy in Fulham, do.
