GRANT & I Following the launch of his second fragrance, Covent Garden, we speak to Richmond local Richard E. Grant about scent and the Spice Girls. I n t e r v i e w r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e
I
met Richard E. Grant on a sunny day in April at The Corner Restaurant and Champagne bar in Selfridges. One of Britain's most eminent acting talents, loved as much for his slurring turn in Withnail & I as for his humourless first footman in Gosford Park, I found myself a little intimidated. But when I arrived at the event, Grant got up and meandered over to introduce himself. “Hello, I’m Richard. You must be Romy,” he took my hand and shook it firmly, before making a joke - one I can’t remember because of a mild case of being struck by stardom - and warning me, with a wry smile, to eat all of my breakfast because he had forked out for it himself. Immaculately dressed in a slim cut navy blazer and with a leonine head of perfectly coiffed hair, Grant is every bit the veteran British thespian - but his self-effacing demeanor, raucous sense of humour and effortless British charm put me instantly at ease. Grant’s formidable acting career hasn’t slowed with age (he recently turned 58).

[WITHNAIL & I]
deals with failure and that is SOMETHING MORE PEOPLE might be Able to EMPATHISE with than success. His recent cameo in acclaimed American television series Girls is evidence of Grant’s ability to remain relevant. Lena Dunham, the writer, director and star of the series, wrote Grant into the role of Jasper - an onand-off-the-wagon cocaine addict indulging in an affair with a girl half his age. As a confessed fan of Withnail & I, it’s easy to see where Dunham’s inspiration for the character came from. There’s a mutual admiration between the two, palpable in the way Grant speaks about her. “[She] write[s] with such extraordinary insight and honesty,” he continues, describing her as an “uber multi-hyphenate phenomenon”.
Any good actor has a couple of stinkers on their resumé, and Grant is not exempt. 2014's Dom Hemmingway is definitely up there, and let's not forget Spice Girls: The Movie. But in general, Grant’s managed to avoid any major flops. From his recent role as Lord Michael Heseltine in 2011 The Iron Lady, to the voice of Percy in Disney’s Pocahontas, Grant’s repertoire is extensive to say the least - he starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s acclaimed Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992, The Age of Innocence in 1993, the aforementioned Gosford Park in 2001 and Bright Young Things in 2003. More recently, Grant played Simon Bricker, an art historian, in Downton Abbey and is currently filming forthcoming ITV drama Jekyll and Hyde. Even with a plethora of box office hits in the bag, the one film most people associate with Grant is Bruce Robinson’s 1987 cult classic, Withnail & I, in which Grant plays an alcoholic Nihlist with a penchant for drinking lighter fluid. Grant attributes the film’s flyaway success to the fact that it “deals with failure and that is something more people might be able to empathise with than success.”

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW
He continues, “[Withnail & I] has no plot nor any of the things every other successful movie relies on. The script is also scabrously witty and infused with profound loss and nostalgia. In other words, it’s truly romantic. “It opened every career door for me. In the three decades since it was made, it still gets quoted at me by total strangers on a daily basis.” With such success so early on his career, has anything else lived up to it? “Writing and directing my autobiographical film WAH-WAH was a real highlight too, as I was able to re-visit my incredibly dysfunctional family life from the safety of middle age.” Born of English, Dutch and German ancestry, Grant’s upbringing was a colourful one. His father, Henrik Esterhuysen, was head of education for the British government administration in the former British Protectorate of Swaziland. When he was ten, Grant witnessed his mother sleeping with his father’s best friend in the back of his car - a cataclysmic event which led to the subsequent divorce of his parents. Writing and producing the film WAHWAH in 2005 - an autobiographical take on this traumatic period of his life was, for Grant, “very intense and cathartic, while directing it was entirely liberating as we filmed in most of the locations where the key events in the story took place.” Surprisingly, Grant's mother gave the film her blessing, something he describes as “both generous and much appreciated.” A former sufferer of depression, Grant now speaks openly about mental health and attributes his recovery to 18-months of rigorous psychoanalysis, claiming that it saved his life. He also believes that acting has helped him to cope with painful memories from his past. “Acting is a great way of dealing with and confronting difficult issues, as you are always examining behavior and what motivates people to do the things they do.” With this in mind, I ask, is there anything he’d like to tell his younger self? “Rest easy. You will live beyond 52” – the age his father died – “You will fall in love. You will have a child. You will live in London. And you will go to Hollywood.”
Ever since NEIL ARMSTRONG set foot on the MOON IN 1969, when I was 12 YEARS old, have I wanted to go into OUTER SPACE.
Though Grant’s father wanted him to become a barrister, “I was so talkative and argumentative, but law was never a serious consideration,” the actor originally wanted to tread the surface of the moon rather than the boards. “Ever since Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon in 1969, when I was 12 years old, have I wanted to go into outer space.”
19 CHIS_June15_E_Grant.indd 19
He may not have made it outside of the O-Zone just yet, but Grant has recently branched into a surprising new industry. Last year he launched his first fragrance, Jack. Far from the Beyonces and Britneys of the fragrance world, Grant saw Jack as an opportunity to explore his obsession with scent. “I have been led by my nose all my life and compulsively sniffed everything in sight,” he admits. As a boy, his concerned parents asked why he felt the need to smell everything, to which he responded: “All animals smell everything, why not us?” At the age of 12 Grant, taken with a local girl, decided to create a perfume for her by boiling gardenia and rose petals in sugar water, sealing them in jars and burying them in the garden. It didn’t work, but ignited a genuine interest in the art of fragrance making. Forty years later and, with the encouragement of his close friend fashion designer Anya Hindmarch, Grant took the plunge. Sleeved in a Union Jack-adorned canvas bag, the fragrance contains notes of lime, marijuana and mandarin, with heart notes of nutmeg and clove, and base notes of vetiver and musk. Grant attributes the inclusion of cannabis to his upbringing in Swaziland, a place also known as The Gold Mine of Marijuana. Grant's latest newest scent, Covent Garden, is available to buy this month. Imbued with notes of rose, orange and carrot, the fragrance is inspired by Covent Garden Market as featured in My Fair Lady - a healthy nod to his theatrical roots. Despite travelling the world with work, Grant is a determined Londoner. Residing in the leafy London suburb of Richmond, he doesn’t sound as though he’ll be moving anytime soon. “It’s halfway between Piccadilly Circus and Heathrow Airport. It’s got the Thames running through it and Richmond Park has 2,000 acres to get lost in,” he beams. “I love London for the variety of theatre, music, museums, galleries and history. They’re unbeatable. And, if a city could be deemed to have a sense of humour, London most definitely has that.” u

For You,
Forever Alice Milner discovers that diamonds are Forever with De Beers’ bespoke engagement ring design
L
egend has it that in the 1400s, the first ever diamond engagement ring was presented to Mary, Duchess of Burgandy, by her suitor the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian I. Ever since, the diamond engagement ring has been a powerful symbol of romance and majesty. Traditional romantics believed that the vena amoris (Latin for ‘Vein of Love’) ran directly from the fourth left hand finger straight to the heart. Even today, a ring-encircled fourth finger remains a powerful representation of love and devotion between two people. A timeless treasure, the ring itself should sit proudly and comfortably on your hand. But which shape diamond is the best and how many? Should one have a white, yellow, rose gold or platinum band? And what size should it be? It’s not an easy choice to make, and a nervous proposer may find themselves swamped with options.
Enter De Beers. In October this year, the exquisite jewellers are set to launch their exceptional For You, Forever bespoke service. This expert in-store service invites a couple or just the man (if he’s feeling brave) to individually craft a De Beers engagement ring, helped by highly-trained Brand Ambassadors, on hand to help select your unique diamonds and their desired setting. Fascinated by this process, I decided to visit the De Beers store in Westfield, to observe how the special For You, Forever process works from start to finish. ‘Each story begins with a personal consultation,’ I am told. ‘During this, your requirements are established and De Beers shares with you their original drawings and inspirations for your design.’ Whether it’s a classic Round Brilliant, an elegant Emerald or a contemporary Princess cut, you then select your diamond and setting – it’s catered so you find what is just perfect for you. ‘For You, Forever pieces are a
75
De_Beers.indd 75
08/08/2013 16:12
true statement of self – not only in the choice of style but also in the opportunity it affords a client to be very precise about their requirements.’ As I peer into the pristine display cabinets, I’m bedazzled by their stunning portfolio of designs and ask how they source their comprehensive range of diamonds. I discover that each year De Beers inspects over 25,000 diamonds, in their quest
Light the heart with unmatched Fire, Life & Brilliance.
to find the highest quality jewels for their clients. They qualify the rarity of the diamond through their special ‘4 Cs’ criteria which rates the diamond according to its carat, cut, clarity and colour. The selected few are then microscopically branded with the De Beers Marque, which reassures clients that every diamond is ‘natural, untreated, conflict-free and responsibly sourced and crafted.’
For De Beers, the diamond selection is more than just the ‘4Cs’ and a gemmological report; two diamonds can be identical on paper yet one can have true brilliance that the other lacks. Drawing on 175 years of diamond expertise, De Beers hand-select their diamonds to ensure they outshine all others. Their aim is to source diamonds that ‘Light the heart with unmatched Fire, Life and Brilliance.’ Next I am shown their pioneering diamond scanning technology – The De Beers Iris. This further enhances the For You, Forever experience, for the sparkling ‘Fire, Life and Brilliance’ of each diamond can be seen through an iPad in-store tool. Slowing down what the naked eye sees in an instant, The De Beers Iris replicates different light conditions in a series of live, moving images. I can clearly see how the perfection of the diamond’s cut causes all eight facets to illuminate simultaneously and symmetrically. It’s truly mesmerising. With what I have viewed today, the De Beers’ promise to ‘honour the light of your love’ makes perfect sense. As I watch a kaleidoscope of sparkling shapes bounce off each diamond, it takes my breath away and I’m even tempted to propose to myself! t’s March. Christmas is long gone and summer is creeping I up slowly, so now is the time to treat yourself to a little pick-me-up. Take a trip to Beauchamp Beauty, nestled in the heart of Richmond, and choose from a selection of indulgent spa treatments because, well, why not. Here, no request is too much, and they pride themselves on working closely with each client and their specific needs and preferences. Before my facial the esthetician talked through my problem areas and asked me about my facial regime (of which there was little to tell). Then, using skincare products from Elemis, the facial began. Exfoliation, serum, massage and a rich deep moisturising cream were the order of the day, all accompanied by a hand, foot and shoulder massage. My face felt and looked refreshed and the temptation to try one of their other treatments – think massage, Elemis body wraps, waxing , manicures, pedicures – was too much to bear, so out I walked freshfaced and with perfect painted toes. The ideal place for a little R&R. u

Absolutely tries out some unlikely excursions from the Four Seasons’ two wildly beautiful resorts in Bali Wo r d s T I M L O T T
I
am travelling to one of my favourite islands in the world - Bali - and staying with my favourite hotel chain, the Four Seasons. What can go wrong? Very little, it turns out. On first arrival, I do find myself fooled. The Four Seasons at Sayan, near the famed cultural capital of the island, Ubud, lies just off a busy road. We pull off into a dirt track, which reveals little but unvariegated jungle. I’ve heard this place is huge – where the hell is the hotel? All we can see is a single, peculiar structure: a large rotunda, about the size of a helicopter landing pad, with a lily pond on top. I cross a bridge to the rotunda, where a flight of stairs takes me down – and down again. The people behind Four Seasons are clever. They have gone deep into the place. The hotel starts to appear – reception, restaurant, bar, terraces, suites. By the time you make it to the lowest level, down near the sacred river than runs through the site, you are in no doubt that this is the heart of a jungle - trees and hills loom all around you. The deep, deep greenness and pleasant sense of disorientation are startling. There are many status levels of rooms, and I am childishly delighted with mine – private pool, outside shower (that’s a good thing in Bali), a bed twice the size of my king size at home. But it turns out to be one of the more modest habitations – the largest one is not so much a hotel room as a private mansion. What do you do in the place like this? You loaf about, obviously – eating, drinking, sunbathing, the usual

travel / bali trials of a travel journalist. But there are activities and excursions too, one of which I think sounds pretty patronising. All the same, I give it a go. A (half) day in the life of a Balinese rice farmer does not sound to me like a recipe for a fun morning – slogging in the fields to plant and extract Bali’s staple crop is not the stuff of leisure. I take a hike first through the rice terraces and beyond, eating breakfast out of banana leaves with an eccentric guide who teaches ‘laughing yoga’. This means I have to stop every few hundred yards and, well, laugh. ‘In Bali we laugh - for no reason’ says the guide. Fair enough – but it does feel like you have, on instruction, gone slightly mad. I visit a ‘typical Balinese home’ – with in-house temple and requisite smiling toothless grandmother cosseting an infant
our eccentric guide teaches_ 'laughing yoga' on the yard – then get down to some rice farming. You jump in the mud, which comes up to your knees. You smooth it down. When you try and get out of the mud, your boots come off. You plant some seeds. Repeat and wait for six weeks. Is it an experience worth having? I think it would probably be better to ask a Balinese rice farmer. As for me, it’s not high on my list of career aspirations. A visit to a jewellery factory, rather like rice farming, doesn’t necessarily feature highly among my must-dos in Bali, but jeweller John Hardy has a remarkable
place 20 minutes from Ubud specialising in Balinese-inspired designs. I can’t afford any of the beautiful pieces they make here – I ask about a silver water jug, and it turns out to be $6,000 – but the showroom alone is worth the visit for its architecture, a vast, high bamboo cathedral, almost as narrow as a canoe and suspended over a rice paddy. Hardy has made a lot of money out of his business, but rather than blow it on making still more money, he’s set up a school in Bali: the Green School. A remarkable place with a holistic ethic, it feels like a Californian cafe complex at first – the entrance, without fences or gates, is just a series of cafes selling vegan ice cream (‘sacred scoops’) and ‘raw food’. No turkey twizzlers here. Rock music from the students decorates the air. The classrooms are open-sided and built of
bamboo. Students swim and take lessons on the bridge that joins the two sides of the premises. A visit to a school may not sound like a great day out, but the Green School will change your whole idea of what it means to be educated. I can’t imagine finding a place as pleasant as the Sayan site, but the resort at Jimbaran Bay trumps it. I am greeted with a welcoming ceremony at the hotel’s temple (with in-house priest) because we are here not only to elegantly loaf about but also to add to our stocks of karma. Bali is one of the most spiritual places in the world, and this resort reflects that, with a large menu of meditation and yoga practices. I undertake a ‘karmic cleansing’ ritual on a high open terrace overlooking the vast beach below. Traditional rituals involve incense flowers and Sanskrit prayers. At its climax, to my surprise (my eyes closed, joining in prayer) a jug of water is emptied on my head by the priest – holy water, it turns out. So that’s ok, I tell myself, shivering back to my room. Leaving my room on the final day, gazing from the balcony to the sea and across another private pool, I feel that although I am a spoiled and hedonistic tourist, I must have done something very right in a past life to end up here, even for a few days. Next time round I’m unlikely to be so lucky. u 5 nights in Ubud at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan before visiting Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay for 5 nights, starting from £2090 per person. Travelling with Audley Travel this includes all flights, transfers and is on a bed and breakfast basis. 62 (361) 701010. fourseasons.com/bali audleytravel.com
