LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S March issue highlights

It made me smile when I saw the cute little Daschund is set to take centre stage at the returning Goodwoof in May. This event is always a must in the social calendar for us here at Absolutely, and they always have a breed in focus, and the humble little sausage dog is their pick for this year – which resonates with me.

You see, I have a Daschund – but also a Kokoni, and even a little Transylvanian Hound thrown into the mix too. Our little Romanian rescue dog Clara has a background that we only know snippets about, but she is a wonderful mix of all these breeds, taking the best (and worst) of their traits and mixing them together to create one bundle of joy.

As I write this, she is right beneath my feet, making it nigh on impossible for me to stretch my legs out. Having a dog has changed our lives, but undoubtedly for the better. She isn’t perfect – she is reactive to other dogs, so we certainly won’t be taking her to Goodwoof – but we wouldn’t have her any other way. Goodwoof is always at the top of my must go to list as I can’t get enough of meeting dogs of all sizes, breeds and personalities. It is a cast iron guarantee to put a big smile on my face.

Chichester Fringe has announced the winners for its brand-new commissioning grant scheme. The two winners are local writer and director Lin Robinson and University of Chichester graduate Iona Rose. Both have been awarded £250 to help bring their work to life, as well as a place to debut their work in the Chichester Fringe 2025 programme.

nsemble Reza is a group of Sussex-based professional musicians, with the shared passion to create an exciting musical environment to benefit audiences across Sussex. Join them for an evening of heart-stopping, foot-tapping folk music, including the fiery and passionate music of the Romani people and other travellers from Greece, Balkans and around the world… and even a bit of French Manouche! parkwoodtheatres.co.uk

Lin says: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be one of the two recipients of the first Chichester Fringe Commissioning Grant award, 2025, and very grateful to the Fringe Team for considering me worthy of this funding.” Lin’s winning application will see her show ‘Toil’ take to the stage this summer. It tells the story of six women who are confined on a small farm and must toil everyday, in a state of ‘transition’, to atone for their past mortal sins.

Iona Rose is the second of the two winners with her new play, ‘Three Witches Brew’; a comedy play about the three witches from Macbeth, but not as you know them! They are out on a hen do when they get a phone call from Lady Macbeth asking them to fake a prophecy for her husband. The cast aims to give audiences a fun, accessible way to get into Shakespeare.

PERFECT PICTURE

A seventh stage adaptation of Peter James’s classic Roy Grace is heading out on tour. The Brighton author tells us all about it

PETER GETS READY FOR

Hot on the heels of the latest instalment of the acclaimed ITV series Grace, Superintendent Roy Grace is back in a brandnew Peter James stage adaptation and world premiere of the bestselling Picture You Dead Starring 2024’s multiple award-winning actor Peter Ash (playing all venues from 6 February–17 May), Strictly Come Dancing winner, presenter and stage actor Ore Oduba (playing all venues from 20 May–26 July), Fiona Wade, who starred this year in 2:22 A Ghost Story following 12 years in Emmerdale, Jodie Steele, and with Casualty’s George Rainsford returning as DSI Roy Grace. Back home in Brighton, DSI Grace investigates a cold case that leads him to the secretive world of fine art, but beneath the respectable veneer lurks a dark underworld of deception and murder. When one unsuspecting couple unearths a potentially priceless masterpiece, they discover that their dream find is about to turn into their worst nightmare, and only Grace can stop them from paying the ultimate price.

Absolutely ventured to Brighton to chat to Peter James to talk about everything from creating an iconic detective to why the city is perfect for murder mysteries.

Q When did you first start to get an idea about DSI Roy Grace?

A It was back in 1997 when I met a young DI in Brighton called David Gaylor. He and I really clicked and he helped me on three of my earlier novels. Then in 2002, after he was promoted to Detective Chief Superintendent, my publishers asked if I had ever thought of creating a detective as a central character – and I went straight to David and asked him how he would feel about being a fictional cop. He loved it. The name Roy Grace just popped up one day.

Q When Dead Simple came out, did you have an inkling that it was going to be a series you would continue to develop over two decades?

A Not remotely! I had a two book deal – I thought I would set up the mystery of what happened to Sandy, Roy’s missing wife, in the first book and give the reveal in the second. I was not expecting the global deluge of correspondence after Dead Simple came out, from readers speculating what might have happened to Sandy!

Q Is it right that each story has its roots in true stories?

A Most of what I write is drawn from true life – but some just comes out of my head, too.

Q What true crime cases did you see first hand that will always stay with you?

A I’ve seen so many, including a teenage Romanian girl who had had a kidney stolen and was left to die in a gutter (Dead Tomorrow). A woman distraught after her beloved dog was stolen in a Brighton park (Stop Them Dead). But the most heartbreaking of all was a 60-yearold man who had been scammed out of every penny he had in the world by someone he met online who he thought was his soulmate (Dead At First Sight).

Q What inspired the most recent DSI Roy Grace book, One of Us is Dead?

A It was a friend who came up to me and said, “I have a story you are going to want to write!’ People say this all the time, but on this occasion he really did have a story I wanted to write. It’s about a man who turns up to a funeral, and sees a man sitting, six pews in front of him, whose funeral he attended two years earlier and gave the eulogy at!

PETER AND THE CAST OF PICTURE YOU DEAD

Q How involved have you been with the ITV series?

A Very – ITV and the whole production team are just wonderful to work with. I’m consulted, along with my wife, in great detail on the scripts, and on every cast decision right down to the most minor role.

Q Did you always have an idea of what Roy Grace looked like – and did John Simm fit the bill?

A Honestly if back in 2002/3 when I was first creating Roy Grace, I had done a police E-Fit, it would have come up with John Simm. He is my absolute dream actor for this role on television. We have also been very blessed with George Rainsford reprising his role of Roy Grace on stage after playing him so brilliantly in the last adaptation. It is hugely interesting to see how very di erent the adaptations of my novels are for the screen and for the stage. Within reason, the television adaptations can have the same large cast of characters, the wide number of locations including some overseas, car chases, action involving trains, boats, aircraft – everything. But to make a touring play viable the cast needs to be limited to around nine characters, and no matter how ingenious our brilliant set designer is, we are restricted to a very small number of sets – so it is pretty much all down to the script, direction and performances.

Q What excites you about the new stage version of Picture You Dead?

A I love this new adaptation of Picture You Dead. The script is just brilliant and I think very suited to our times in that it is both thrilling, but also funny and overall hugely entertaining – without terrifying the audience… well, not too much! Anyone who goes to see it will get everything they expect from a Peter James story, but the one thing above all, I guarantee, is that they will have a fun time with a great cast. The paintings of David Henty, which feature, are so brilliant, they are going to make an awesome backdrop, and I love that the story for the novel – and now for the play – are inspired by this amazing and hugely larger than life artist. David Henty, who lives very close to Brighton, is considered by many to be the world’s greatest living art forger.

Q This interview will come out just before the show heads to Brighton Theatre Royal. How important has Brighton been to your life and career?

A I love Brighton so much, and it is so much a part of Roy Grace and everything that I’ve ever written. I was very lucky to have been born and raised in Brighton and Hove, and that not that many writers, before me, ever really wrote about it in depth.

“If I created an E-Fit back in 2002 when I first created Roy Grace, it would have looked like John Simm”

Q Why was it the perfect place to set the scene for DSI Roy Grace?

A Every city has its own kind of crime, but Brighton is pretty unique in having such a criminal pedigree. It began as a smugglers village, Brighthelmstone, then became a haven for villains during the Victorian era, who moved here from London bringing prostitution, cockfighting and all other forms of illegal gambling, protection racketeering and so much more! More recent history has seen it a haven for bent antique dealers, drug dealers, gangs and smuggling of all kinds. Three previous Chief Constables have told me Brighton is the favoured place to live in the UK for First Division criminals…

Q What places in Brighton do you love to head to for a more positive spin on life?

A I love the undercli walk at Rottingdean, to walk up on the Downs and to roam the North Laine district. And I love the amazing variety of food the city’s restaurants o er.

Q What comes next for you?

A I have a very exciting new Roy Grace coming out in September. Recently Queen Camilla announced that Roy Grace is her favourite fictional detective. There may well be a Royal connection in the new story…

its coastal location. Live music includes everything from Rat Pack cabaret evenings to pop, soul, rock, acoustic and country nights, plus Abba and Elvis tributes –providing something for everyone’s taste.

With five fully refurbished boutique rooms exuding individual luxury, The Seaview invites guests to indulge in the ultimate Sussex coast getaway. Each room has been thoughtfully designed with crisp linen for a restful night’s sleep, modern amenities and stylish interiors. Homemade breakfast can also be added to further the guest experience.

“Our aim was to create a relaxing retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, ready to immerse in a little coastal charm,” says general manager, Carlo Renzulli. “We believe we’ve blended the perfect mix of tranquillity, comfort and elegance for a blissful Sussex stay.”

Just a short journey away from the vibrant fun of Brighton’s eclectic atmosphere, the prestigious Goodwood Racing ground’s flagship events, the historic Arundel Castle, and the charming city of Chichester, The Seaview is a hidden Sussex gem, perfectly nestled as a retreat for travellers to unwind in style after a day trip. From water sports adventures to seasonal walks and over 50 vineyards to visit in ‘the heartland of English winemaking’, there’s plenty to discover nearby.

Leading the WAY

Interview with Professor Mark Whiteley from The Whiteley

Clinic, the UK’s leading expert in the treatment of varicose veins and pelvic congestion syndrome

Q Can you tell us a little more about yourself and your clinics?

A I am Professor Mark Whiteley, consultant venous surgeon and executive chairman of The Whiteley Clinic, the UK’s leading vein clinic and an internationally recognised centre of excellence for varicose vein treatments and pelvic congestion syndrome. The Whiteley Clinic is known throughout the vein world for our multi award-winning research and innovative treatment methods, leading to the lowest possible recurrence rates and high long term patient satisfaction. We have seven clinics across the UK in London, Guildford, Henley, Poole, Bristol and recently opened in Manchester and Liverpool.

Q What are varicose veins?

A Varicose veins are abnormally large bulging veins that can be seen pressing out the skin of the legs or vulva/scrotum when standing or sitting. They bulge because of the pressure of the blood inside them. This occurs because the underlying veins have failed valves, reversing the blood flow from the heart and back into the veins. Visible varicose veins in the legs can cause tired, aching, heavy legs and swollen ankles, but can also lead to red or brown stains around the ankles, bleeding, leg ulcers (open sores), or blood clots (DVT).

Q What are hidden varicose veins?

A “Hidden varicose veins” is the name given to the same underlying problem, but without

bulging veins, and therefore they cannot be seen. As such, these patients have the same problems and risks as those who have visible varicose veins, but do not know that they have them because they are not visible on the surface. They might be hidden because they are too deep in the leg, or because they are hidden deep inside the pelvis.

Hidden varicose veins in the legs still cause tired, aching, heavy legs as well as the skin damage, clots and ulcers, but within the pelvis can cause an aching feeling, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder, pain during intercourse, lower back pain, hip pain and haemorrhoids of the vulva or vagina in females or the scrotum in males.

Q What can this lead to?

A One in three (30%) of women attending gynaecology outpatients with chronic pelvic pain have pelvic hidden varicose veins, known as pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) or pelvic venous disorders (PeVD). Unfortunately, these conditions are not recognised by most gynaecologists and these patients are frequently told that they have endometriosis or that there is “nothing wrong with them”.

It is estimated that approximately one million women in the UK are su ering from pelvic pain due to PCS and are not being given the diagnosis by their gynaecologists due to lack of understanding in how to diagnose and treat the condition.

To address this, we have just opened a new women’s health clinic in London’s Bond Street in February. Led by Dr Sophie Strong, a consultant gynaecologist specialising in pelvic pain, it will be the first women’s pelvic pain clinic in the UK to specialise in both PCS and other gynaecological causes of pelvic pain.

Q Can visible or hidden varicose veins be easily treated?

A Although many doctors still think veins are easy, research has shown that there are many di erent patterns of veins disease – many relatively easy to treat for the specialist, but often there are complexities that cause early recurrence if missed.

Venous duplex ultrasound scans at The Whiteley Clinic are performed by a team of dedicated Vascular Scientists/Sonographers, allowing the Whiteley Clinic trained consultants to devise a complete and personalised treatment plan for each patient.

All treatments are walk-in, walk-out and performed under local anaesthetic, reducing the risks of general anaesthetic, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

If you have further questions, then please call The Whiteley Clinic on 0330 058 1850 or email info@thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk to book your consultation in your clinic of choice. For more information visit thewhiteleyclinic.co.uk

GRAND design

Juliette Byrne takes us behind the scenes of this stunning Georgian manor house project in Sussex

Juliette Byrne has been named by House & Garden as one of the top 100 leading interior designers in the UK for the past 13 years. She has also been awarded by The Telegraph the accolade of being one of the ‘top 20 interior designers in Britain’. This wonderful project in Sussex highlights why and, here, Juliette talks to Absolutely about why it was such a grand undertaking.

Q What excited you about this project in Sussex?

A The charm of the property’s Georgian architecture was immediately captivating. The long sash windows, the flowering magnolia and wisteria on the façade, and the sheer history of the house spoke volumes. Despite needing modernisation, it had a warmth and intimacy that felt special from the start. The home is owned by the founder of Links of London and now more recently Annoushka Jewellery. Annoushka herself was captivated by how the property felt homely, noting that only two families had lived there over the span of more than 200 years. Even though the project was large in scale, we wanted to maintain a welcoming, intimate atmosphere.

Q What was your initial brief?

A The brief was to create a warm, elegant family house while honouring the property’s historical roots. The clients wanted spaces that could serve both formal entertaining and relaxed family living, with interiors that reflected their personal style and extensive travels. They wanted a home the family could always come back to and feel relaxed together as they all travel extensively. They also sought sustainable solutions, including the use of antique and repurposed materials where possible.

Q Were you faced with many challenges?

A When you work on Grade II listed properties, challenges are inevitable. That’s where having an experienced team of skilled designers really comes into play. For example, you often find that hallway or reception room walls aren’t perfectly straight, or that ceilings made of lath and plaster are uneven and need to be retained, which limits where you can install features like downlights.

One of the most intricate parts of this project was updating the historic electrical wiring. We had to ensure that the original fabric of the building wasn’t disturbed, which required a lot of creative thinking and precision.

Another key challenge was preserving the architectural integrity of the interior. While the house had beautiful proportions, over the years many of the upper-floor rooms had been subdivided into smaller bedrooms or storage areas. Our goal was to reinstate the original layout while also incorporating en-suite bathrooms, shower rooms, and dressing rooms to give the home a modern, functional flow that met the client’s needs.

In the newer extensions, we wanted to complement the manor’s original footprint while adding

a contemporary twist so it wasn’t just a pastiche. We used features like full heightwall panelling and tongue-and-groove painted boarding to subtly blend the old and new. We also focused on connecting the interiors with the outdoor spaces. By installing double French doors, the new areas now open out seamlessly to the walled garden and pool, creating a perfect summer living experience.

Q The main drawing room had fallen into disrepair, so how did you approach that element of the project?

A Our priority was to reinstate all the original architectural features to preserve the room’s historical integrity. The antique marble fireplace was restored, and a fully functional real fire grate was installed. To enhance the room’s warmth and sophistication, we added a camel-coloured faux suede fender from Acres Farm and created a window seating area with fabric by Bernard Thorp. A two-seater sofa by Beaumont and Fletcher, upholstered in Nile and York fabric with Samuel & Sons fringing, complemented these architectural elements.

Q Why did you want to reinstate all original architectural features?

A Restoring original features was essential to

maintain the authenticity and grandeur of the property. Georgian architecture is timeless, and preserving these details honours the building’s history while providing a strong foundation for layered interior design. These restored features act as focal points that elevate each room’s aesthetic and historical narrative.

Q How did you furnish the room?

A We curated a mix of antique and custommade pieces to enhance the architectural features. Key items included Sarah Graham’s commissioned artworks flanking the fireplace in the drawing room and a large upholstered ottoman covered in fabric by Claremont and designed by my team. These elements were complemented by rich textures such as dark plum coloured velvet curtains and a bespoke Diana Von Furstenburg rug from The Rug Company.

Q What design elements did you bring into the formal dining room?

A The formal dining room was designed for elegant evening gatherings. We selected a gold Zoffany wallpaper for warmth and richness, and added dado panelling painted in aubergine eggshell. An antique mirrored top on the fireplace reflects the candlelit sconces, enhancing the room’s atmosphere. Rose taffeta curtains with gold fringe frame the bay window, while a crystal antique pendant hangs above the mahogany dining table. The Robert Langford button-backed dining chairs, upholstered in contrasting fabrics, complete the sophisticated look. When the long dining table is set for 25 guests and the lights are dimmed, the room becomes a magical setting, perfectly reflecting the clients' passion for hosting gatherings with friends and clients from around the world.

“We curated a mix of antique and custommade pieces”

Q How did you make the kitchen truly stand out?

A The kitchen is the heart of the home, designed to be both functional and uplifting. Shaker-style panelled units, painted in Farrow & Ball’s 'Elephant’s Breath', create a classic yet modern feel. The large cream AGA is a centrepiece, complemented by a central island with a green slate top. We also incorporated tall sash windows and French doors leading to the garden and breakfast room to maximize natural light and connectivity to the outdoors. Bespoke seating and a horse head sculpture by Nic Fiddian-Green add character and personal significance.

Q What other parts of the house did you work on?

A In addition to the main living areas, we reconfigured the top attic area to create a third floor with bedrooms for guests and future grandchildren. The entrance hall was another key focus, featuring a dramatic tumbled limestone floor and an elegant original curved staircase. We added oxblood red leather studded upholstered doors to distinguish the rear of the house. Throughout the home, elements such as reclaimed wood floors and heritage lime renders were used to ensure both beauty and longevity.

Q Are there any little design touches that may not be immediately obvious that you were pleased with?

A There are many subtle details that add depth to the design. For example, concealed lighting in the library snug creates a layered, intimate atmosphere. The window seats throughout the house not only provide additional seating but also cleverly conceal radiators. Custom upholstery and fabric selections – such as the fringed rose taffeta curtains and the cushions by Justin Van Breda – add refined touches that contribute to the overall elegance.

Q Do you have a favourite part of the project?

A Without a doubt, the family study. It was originally an oak-paneled room, but when we discovered that the wiring had to be completely redone, we had no choice but to remove all the paneling and take the room back to the brick walls. It was a challenge, but it became one of the most rewarding aspects of the project.

We also commissioned a large family portrait of the children to anchor the space and remade the original Colefax and Fowler curtains to maintain the room’s heritage charm. Additional vintage-style elements, like leather armchairs, a club fender, and a wingback chair, added to the room’s character. The final touch was a beautiful pomegranate rug from The Rug Company, which tied everything together perfectly.

Looking for garden inspiration as we head into spring? The National Garden Scheme in Sussex will offer just that

SANDHILL FARM HOUSE, PHOTO BY LEIGH CLAPP
“The garden has many pockets of interest”

With record donations in 2024, the power of gardens and garden visits for good causes is evident, and it was another landmark year for the National Garden Scheme with the charity donating a record £3,501,227 from the 2024 garden opening season. The impact of these donations to their major nursing and health beneficiaries means that thousands of people who live with health conditions such as cancer or Parkinson’s, who have poor mental health, or who struggle financially as unpaid carers, have been supported by their funding of the nurses, health professionals and case workers who support them. Their funding has also provided support to those in the Gardens and Health sector along with Community Gardens and supported gardeners through traineeships. With spring upon us, Sussex once again has a whole host of stunning gardens opening up

to the public, and here the National Garden Scheme and Absolutely have picked out five that are inspiring and innovative.

THE OLD VICARAGE, WASHINGTON

The 3½ acre garden at The Old Vicarage is set around 1832 Regency house (not open). As well as the stunning views looking towards the North Downs, enhanced by mature and various specimen trees, the garden has many pockets of interest. There is a Japanese garden with its waterfall, pond, bamboo and grasses, a further large water garden and numerous creatively planted herbaceous borders. A working kitchen garden has glasshouses, fruit cages, orchard and vegetables. The Italianate gazebo with green oak columns and lead roof offers a wonderfully comfortable place to sit and contemplate the beauty of this garden. Throughout, there are well placed seating areas to take in the stunning scenery. The treehouse is much loved by young and old alike, from here the nature viewing platform opens on to the woodland copse area which incorporates a

stream and architectural stumpery. Everyone loves the topiary of characters who watch over the tennis court.

The Old Vicarage The Street, Washington, West Sussex RH20 4AS is open for the National Garden Scheme every Thursday until 2nd October (10am-4pm). Admission £8, children free. Pre-booking essential. Also open Monday 21st Apr, Monday 26th May, Sunday 27th July, Monday 25th Aug (10am-5pm). Admission £8, children free. Purchase tickets in advance or at the gate on the day. Visits also by arrangement 17th March to 2nd October for groups of 12 to 30.

SANDHILL FARM HOUSE, ROGATE

Sandhill Farm House is the home of author and principal of The English Gardening School, Rosemary Alexander. The gardens are broken up into garden rooms including a small kitchen garden. The front garden is planted with early spring flowering shrubs, ferns and bulbs and has a small woodland area. There is a white and green garden, a large leaf border and terraced area. The rear garden has rose borders, a

small decorative vegetable garden, a red border and a grasses border. There are gravel paths and a few steps not easily negotiated in a wheelchair. Dogs on leads allowed.

Sandhill Farm House, Nyewood Road, Rogate, Petersfield, West Sussex GU31 5HU is open for the National Garden Scheme on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th April (1pm-4pm) and Sunday 27th April (2pm5pm). Admission £8, children free. Pay on the day.

JUDY’S COTTAGE GARDEN, WORTHING

A beautiful medium sized cottage garden with something of interest all year-round. The garden has several mature trees creating a feeling of seclusion. The informal beds contain a mixture of shrubs, perennials, cottage garden plants and spring bulbs. There are little hidden areas to enjoy, a small fishpond and other water features. There is also a pretty log cabin overlooking the garden.

Judy’s Cottage Garden, 33 The Plantation, Worthing, West Sussex BN13 2AE is open for the National Garden Scheme on Friday 18th April and Saturday 21st June (10.30am-3.30pm). Admission £5, children free.

KING JOHN’S NURSERY, ETCHINGHAM

The garden at King John’s Nursery has been organically growing over the last few years. With projects constantly in the pipeline it is always changing. The two small gardens within the high hornbeam hedges have personalities of their own. The wildmeadow is a

truly wild affair full of camassias and daffodil thalia in spring alongside snakeshead fritillaries. The wildmeadow becomes truly wild and buzzes with insect life in summer. A new rose garden was planted in the autumn of 2024 below the meadow before you head through the long border. A shady walk through the trees and the old meadow ends with a blast of colour with the cutting garden. There is also a romantic pond garden. The nursery sells lots of unusual plants and the shop is a treasure trove of tools, homeware and vintage finds alongside stoneware pots, statuary and plant supports.

King John’s Nursery, Sheepstreet Lane, Etchingham, East Sussex TN19 7AZ is open for the National Garden Scheme on Saturday 22nd March and Saturday 24th May, Saturday 28th June and Saturday 13th September (10am-5pm). Admission £5, children free.

THE GARDEN HOUSE BRIGHTON

One of Brighton’s secret gardens, providing yearround interest with trees, shrubs, herbaceous borders and annuals, fruit and vegetables, two glasshouses, a pond and rockery. A friendly garden, always changing with a touch of magic to delight visitors, above all it is a slice of the country in the midst of a bustling city. The garden is changing all the time to reflect both the seasons and changing trends in horticulture. Garden House also provides a learning space for creative and inspiration courses and events. Feel REJUVENATED

Do you wake up fully rested? Take the Jensen Beds sleep test and find out

The first step to better sleep health is understanding what to change. Small tweaks to your daily routine can have a great impact on the quality of your sleep – and your quality of life. Jensen Beds’ sleep experts have developed a test which takes just a few minutes to complete and will help you on your way to waking up fully rested. Simply scan the QR code, left, and put your sleep to the test and take the first step to better sleep health.

WHY JENSEN?

For over 75 years, Jensen Beds’ purpose has been to help people improve their sleep. The team developing their beds has expertise in physiology and sleep

science. Innovations such as Jensen Exact Comfort Adjustment, their unique zone system and the Aloy® spring system all contribute to better sleep comfort, limiting the need to wake and change your sleeping position. Because the less disruption you experience during sleep, the more rested you will be in the morning.

FOUR ROUTINES THAT IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP

1. Write a gratitude journal

Writing is a great way to process your emotions. Write down three things every night before you go to bed and see if it helps you find a sense of calm and security that helps you sleep better. When you let go of negative thoughts, it becomes easier to relax. Lower stress levels contribute to the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, which helps you fall asleep faster and wake up refreshed.

2. Leave your mobile out of the bedroom

Make it a habit to keep your mobile phone in another room while you sleep. This reduces distractions and minimizes the temptation to check your phone if you wake during the night, which can interfere with your ability to fall back asleep quickly. This keeps your sleep environment healthier, free from the blue light emitted by screens, which is known to disrupt circadian rhythms and suppress melatonin production.

3. Sleep in a bed with optimal support for your body

Invest in a bed that is comfortable and gives your whole body good ergonomic support. To give you optimal support, your bed needs to meet the specific requirements of your body. When you are allowed to sleep without pressure, your brain doesn’t have to signal to your body to change position throughout the night. This helps you stay in restorative sleep for longer periods of time.

4. Use a wake-up light as a morning alarm

Traditional alarm clocks wake you very abruptly, which can be a stressful experience. A wake-up light wakes you gradually over 20-30 minutes as the light simulates a natural sunrise. This gentle approach to waking up helps you start the day with more energy and a positive mindset.

The WaterBear story started when Bruce John Dickinson and I joined forces, combining over 30 years of music industry experience and 25 years of music education experience, to bring an ongoing vision to life. Our undying passion for music education was the key catalyst for starting WaterBear, bringing our conceptual conversations to fruition.

As most industries have, the music trade has changed from decade to decade, bringing new influences and creative styles to the surface of an artistic craft that prides itself on its subjectivity. At WaterBear, we’ve seen creative inspiration from all genres and styles of music and we’re always excited to see who the next group of artists and musicians draw their own inspiration from.

Our ethos, supporting DIY artists, musicians and industry professionals

A step forward for music education: the WaterBear story

to build sustainable careers in music, is designed to give the students full control over their artistic licensing, genre and life in the industry, in a bid to break the chains on musical creativity and provide them with a truly blank canvas when it comes to their musical aspirations.

Brighton provides an excellent environment for students to thrive, making our decision to establish WaterBear here a highly rewarding one. In recent years, we’ve experienced remarkable growth fuelled by the city’s vibrant seafront and diverse community, both of which contribute to exceptional student satisfaction. Our student-centred approach and commitment to delivering outstanding experiences and opportunities have also been key factors in our success.

WaterBear’s campus is on the doorstep of

renowned locations for students, locals and tourists to visit, including the North Laine, with its quirky boutiques, vintage shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants, and of course the many outstanding live music venues.

Since 2021, the college has been operating its own live music venue on Brighton seafront, The WaterBear Venue. This versatile space is dedicated to helping students, artists, and musicians develop their craft. In addition to hosting live music performances, the venue supports studentled events, meetings, live performance workshops, rehearsals, masterclasses, and special events such as songwriting camps and Fresher’s Week activities.

Committed to fostering grassroots music and supporting Brighton’s vibrant live music scene, the venue is also an o cial venue of The Great Escape Festival, which showcases

and supports new music and emerging artists from around the world. Furthermore, it also works with Brighton Fringe, providing a bookable space for creatives to perform their unique and innovative shows.

In recent times, WaterBear musicians and artists have enjoyed events such as A Night of Amy Winehouse (with Amy’s original backing band), and A Night of George Michael (with George’s backing vocalists, Cowboys and Angels), giving WaterBear artists invaluable experience and insights performing with professional musicians. WaterBear’s catalogue of courses covers all musical aspirations in Brighton and the recently opened She eld campus, from performance, production, and electronic music to songwriting and business.

O ering undergraduate, postgraduate study and online study to enable extra

Our roster of experienced tutors and mentors with extensive backgrounds in the industry lead the forefront of our teaching. Working with artists and bands such as Ed Sheeran, The Rolling Stones and Keane, our sta provide first-class music education to WaterBear students. The college also wields an extensive network of connections with like-minded musicians, creatives and industry professionals who act as inspiration and motivation for students during their time at WaterBear.

We’ve had plenty of success at WaterBear over the last couple of years, a monumental surge in undergraduate course applications last year taking us close to capacity, our students and alumni being invited to perform at Glastonbury 2024, and the annual celebrations of our students graduating in their respective fields at the Brighton Dome.

We have lots of exciting plans for 2025 and as the college grows it endeavours to create the best facilities and opportunities for our artists and musicians, and we continue to celebrate the year-onyear commercial and artistic growth of the college and its students.

National Trust, Rubies and Magic Breakfast join forces with World Book Day to champion reading for fun in 2025

On 6th March, World Book Day is back across the UK and Ireland. World Book Day’s evidence shows that children are more likely to read if they enjoy it, so this year the charity will encourage them to ‘Read Their Way’ and celebrate children’s choices.

World Book Day is partnering with a number of exciting brands and organisations, including the National Trust, Magic Breakfast, Rubies and McDonald’s, to get its vital message about the fun of reading to as many children and families as possible. With levels of reading enjoyment currently at an all-time low, it’s more important than ever to get young people excited about reading for fun, unlocking the proven benefits it brings, including better wellbeing and improved learning across the school curriculum.

One in 10 children aged 5-18 do not have a single book of their own at home, and World Book Day’s £1 books are often the first book many children will own: in 2024, one in four children receiving Free School Meals said

their £1 book was the first they had ever owned. Fifteen new books will be available in the UK and Ireland for children to choose for free, in exchange for their £1 book token.

Cassie Chadderton, World Book Day CEO, says: “At the heart of World Book Day is the belief – backed by evidence – that children are more likely to read if they enjoy it and have a choice in what and how to read. Graphic novels, comics, or one of our amazing £1 books – free in exchange for a World Book Day book token – can help unlock the power of reading. We’re excited to be working with so many partners to reach even more children and families, and to invite everyone to join the party and ‘Read Their Way’ this World Book Day.”

Supported by long-term sponsor, National Book Tokens, and working alongside publishers and booksellers, the charity World Book Day will build on its work to improve access to books and encouraging everyone to give children the choice – and a chance – to enjoy reading. The World Book Day £1 books will be available until 23rd March at more than 400 independent bookshops and 4,000 major retailers.

HERE’S A TASTER OF WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT IN THE WORLD BOOK DAY 2025 PROGRAMME

• Rubies, the renowned global costume manufacturer, will be the official dress up partner for World Book Day 2025. As part of an All Dressed Up donation scheme, Rubies, in partnership with Parentkind, will donate up to 100,000 costumes to children in deprived areas.

• National Trust are joining the fun for the first time, with a range of World Book Day celebrations taking place at up to 80 places across the UK.

• McDonald’s will continue to support World Book Day and help provide access to books, with the World Book Day £1 token available on Happy Meals®.

• Over 400 independent bookshops across the UK alongside Waterstones, WHSmith and The Works will help bring the selection of £1 books to local communities.

The dog event like no other will be returning to Sussex in May

Acelebration of all that we love about dogs will, once again, take place at the Goodwood Estate over the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th May. Set against the spectacular backdrop of The Kennels, Goodwood Members’ Clubhouse, the event is set to o er something for everyone –whether they’re on two legs or four.

Visitors can enjoy wellness workshops including dog yoga and reiki, talks from behavioural and veterinary experts, world class competitions from top canine athletes and plenty of ‘have-a-go activities’ all of which are included in the entry price.

They can meander down the quiet Woodland Walk, stopping o to see the tarot reader or tattoo artist along the way, have a dip in the refreshing Fido’s Lido, sip a glass of Taittinger champagne or pre-book a Fortnum & Mason hamper to enjoy in the sunshine. There are plenty of other catering outlets and shaded places to picnic too as well as an o -lead paddock where dogs can let o steam. The Fastest Dog competition is always a popular spot as dogs speed along the 50m track against the clock.

New for 2025 is a crafting area where visitors can take a break from exploring to create canine-influenced souvenirs of the day and there are always lots of perfect areas to take photos for social media, or simply to remember a fabulous outing for all the family.

Each year, Goodwoof celebrates a particular breed and, this year, they’re looking forward to welcoming dachshunds of all shapes, sizes, and colours to take part in the parade which opens the event each morning. Dogs and their families

will lead the way from Goodwood House, onto the event site after pausing for a photograph with the Duke of Richmond and his own dachshund, Winston. Everything is thought of to make sure dogs have the best time at Goodwoof. There are lots of areas o ering shade and shelter as well as quiet places for dogs to decompress if they need to. Pet behaviourists and vets are on hand at all times and there are poo bags and bins, as well as water stations across the showground. You would be barking mad to miss this.
