LETTER Editor’s
ABSOLUTELY’S March issue highlights
My younger self would think I am mad, but a part of me misses my old commute. Today, I WFH pretty much every day, bar the odd meeting in town, so the days of getting up at the crack of dawn to battle on to the rush hour train have long gone.
Yes, there were always delays, and yes I hardly ever got a seat, but there were elements of my journey I enjoyed. The coffee from the little independent outside the station (sadly no more), the chance to actually read a newspaper without my dog ripping it to shreds, and I never tired of pulling into London and admiring our capital's architecture.
5
Then again, I was never involved in a mystery disappearance or a murder, which may have clouded my judgment. But those things are what Herts actress Giovanna Fletcher is currently embracing in her stint in the stage adaptation of The Girl on the Train, which sounds like a must see.
Given the WFH statement at the start of this letter, when our Absolutely Home special trundles around I always take a real interest in the latest looks and buys. After all, if I am stuck here I'd like something nice to look at. Enjoy the issue!

Team Deep Dish is a concept that brings together like-minded athletes who are aspiring to reach their highest level possible in beach volleyball, and are willing to push each other in order to do so. Their foundations are built on the simple yet essential idea of creating high level training environments on a daily basis for athletes to get better.
Team Deep Dish was founded in 2012 when Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf teamed up with coach Lewie Lett with an aspiration to compete against the best in the world and carve a pathway for the next generation that showed funding was not a barrier to be the best you could be. A shared passion and resilience is all that is required. Now Team Deep Dish has grown and they not only help players fulfil their potential, but also mentor them through challenges.

Hertfordshire-based Giovanna Fletcher takes on the role of Rachel Watson in the stage adaptation of The Girl on the Train. Absolutely jumps on to find out more
Q What can audiences expect when they come to see The Girl on the Train?
A It's a gripping night of theatre that really keeps people on the edge of their seats the whole way through as they try to work out, alongside Rachel, what’s going on. It’s really thrilling, really gripping and captivating. It’s just brilliant storytelling, which Rachel Wagsta and Duncan Abel have adapted from the Paula Hawkins multi-million selling novel. It’s a great thriller that will pull audiences in and, as I say, keep them on the edge of their seats.
Q Who is Rachel and what is her role in the story?
A When we meet Rachel at the start of the play she’s clearly not at the best point in her life. Every day she gets on the train to work, and she is completely captivated by this couple who basically are living the life that she feels she should have had, but everything’s gone south for her. She’s an alcoholic, she’s divorced, there’s so much that’s gone wrong for her, and she sees this couple and totally idolises them. Then one day she’s on the train and she sees the woman in that couple kissing someone else. All her dreams of them as this perfect couple are shattered. The next day the lady goes missing, so the rest of
the play is all about Rachel trying to piece together what, if any, her involvement in that is. Because of her drinking, she has black holes in her memory, and she can’t remember everything. It’s about her trying to let the memories in, and both the audience and Rachel are very much aligned with that because the audience finds out things as Rachel does.
Q What makes her such a juicy character to play?
A She’s brilliant. I think that when you are greeted by someone at their lowest and then you see them regain their strength and find their voice, that’s an empowering part to play. She goes through so much, trying to get to a place where she’s able to speak up and act in a way that she can be proud of. I think she’s someone who has been dismissed for so long by society and within her relationships that it feels like an empowering thing to be the one to help her find her way.
Q What are the challenges of playing a drunk?
A It’s tricky because you don’t want to see me just swaying around the stage. It’s more about the emotions when you’re drunk, it’s more about how things are
heightened. Whatever choice you make, it’s just that little bit more. So that’s been fun to play around with and that’s what the rehearsal process is for – to kind of go 'How drunk are we making her at this point?' But there’s not loads of slurring or anything like that. I think that mostly when you’re drunk you try not to seem drunk. It’s been fun to play around with that, and there are various points throughout the play where she’s trying not to drink to gain some clarity, then it all falls apart again. It’s been fun experimenting with it.
Q Are there surprises in store for people who have read the book or have seen the film version?
A Yes, absolutely. I read the play first. I hadn’t read the book or seen the film, so I read the play first and then I went back and read the novel and watched the movie. It’s interesting to see the di erent takes and the way that each version really leans into whatever device is being used to tell the story. The wonderful thing about theatre is that it’s live and it’s right in front of you, so you don’t know what’s coming next or how it’s going to be told. If you’re a fan of the book or the film, amazing – come along and you’ll love it. If you’ve never read the book or seen
the film, don't worry – you’re absolutely going to be able to follow what’s going on because it’s a great piece of storytelling.
Q You've done stage thrillers before, like Wish You Were Dead and 2:22 A Ghost Story. Why do you think audiences are drawn to them repeatedly?
A I’ve been thinking about that a lot. I wonder if it’s because of the you’re-all-inthis-together aspect of it. When you see a comedy, you need one person to do the audible laugh first and everyone knows 'This is fine, we’re all in this together and we’re allowed to react'. I think with thrillers that it’s the same thing. You’re sharing all these feelings together. When there’s one person who gasps and then
“Thrillers in the theatre have been having quite the time lately”
there’s a little giggle in the audience, then everyone knows that it’s okay to react. I think it’s that feeling of maybe having safety in the collective. Thrillers in the theatre have been having quite the time lately, and understandably so. They’re fun to tell and they’re fun to sit through, feeling that shared anxiety and that shared anticipation of what’s to come. Suspense unites people.
Q You've had such a varied career. Can you pick a few highlights?
A Acting-wise, when I was in my first job in the West End, I understudied Andrea Riseborough at the Wyndham’s Theatre in Ivanov. It was the Donmar season, with Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hiddleston, and
I had my own part, but I also understudied Andrea. She went o one-night mid-show and I had a three-minute warning that she might not be able to continue with the play. Suddenly I was getting ready, then she was going to go back on, then she couldn’t go on and I think I had about 15 seconds' warning that I was going on in her place. That was such a massive high and one that I’m super, super proud of. I feel so lucky that my career has been able to take di erent paths. I think the through line of each of those paths is storytelling, whether that’s telling a story through playing a character and seeing things through their lives or whether it’s on the podcast [Happy Mum, Happy Baby] where I’m helping someone else tell their story.
Q What do you enjoy about touring with a show?
A There are so many amazing parts of the country that I get to see. I love seeing the di erent theatres, going on the di erent walks, it’s just brilliant. Touring is important because not everyone can get to London to see a show. It’s so important that the theatre can tour in the way that it does, and I have huge respect for the people who do it.
Q Is there anything you couldn't be on the road without?
A I take my co ee bags everywhere, just to make sure I’ve got co ee, and usually some pre-cooked meals so when I get to my digs, I’ve got stu to eat for the week. And I take my walking boots, so I can have a proper walk.

f you want to go down the natural route, PRP is a very safe option” says Dr Bhavik Shah as I sit back in the chair at the DrMediSpa clinic on Chiltern Street. As someone who is on the fence about botox and fillers, I’ve been curious to find out if PRP (which stands for ‘Platelet Rich Plasma’) could be a good alternative. My appointment with Dr Shah begins with a consultation to discuss my skin concerns. Dr Shah explains that Croma Arthrex PRP (or the ‘vampire facial’ as it’s better known on TikTok), utilises a concentration of platelets and plasma derived from the patient’s own blood to stimulate collagen production and natural healing. The treatment starts with a small amount of blood being drawn from my arm. Dr Shah then processes it to separate the platelet-rich plasma and we wait for six minutes for it to be ‘spun’. There’s a good amount of golden plasma in the vial. If you’ve read this far, then you’re probably not squeamish, which is a definite plus for PRP. Luckily I’m ok with needles, but I close my eyes as Dr Shah uses a cannula to deliver the concentrated ‘PRP’ into three strategic points on each side of my face. I find this more uncomfortable than painful, although one side is definitely more sensitive than the other. I’m amazed to see how little swelling there is at the injection sites. The next day my face is a little pu y, but there’s no bruising and I can already see that my skin looks glowier. A few days on, lines are softened, and my under eye dark circles are reduced. I can definitely see myself booking into DrMediSpa again soon.

Discover Exceptional Care at Bartlett’s
Set in 18 acres of beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside, Bartlett’s is the South East’s number one rated care home. Opening Spring 2025, our new Garden Lodges o er premium, personalised care alongside exclusive amenities including a café, gallery, and private gardens. With only 12 bedrooms available, now is the perfect time to learn more about our unique approach to care.
GP home visits are the ultimate level of face to face care and o er a myriad of benefits that cater to the convenience, comfort, and overall well-being of patients. In my over 20 years of medical practice it remains the star element of health care that UK primary care used to provide. Sadly no more. In the pursuit of ever more “accessible” health care and modern technology we have lost something very precious. In my opinion, GP home visits are a key element of healthcare, or at least should be. Why is that?
CONVENIENCE AND TIMESAVING
Home visits eliminate the need for patients to travel to a clinic, which is particularly beneficial during acute illness or for those with hectic schedules. This saves time and reduces the stress associated with waiting in a crowded clinic waiting room, alongside
others who may be ill and pass some virus onto you. Thus home visits o er a straight-forward and more pleasant solution for busy individuals and families.
NO NEED TO TRAVEL
Travel can be challenging and taxing, especially for the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, or parents with young children. GP home visits remove the barrier of travel, ensuring that all patients have access to medical care without the need to leave the comfort of their own home.
IDEAL FOR ELDERLY AND LESS MOBILE PATIENTS
For elderly patients or those with reduced mobility, home visits are indispensable. They provide a way to receive comprehensive healthcare without the physical burden of travelling to a doctor’s o ce, which can sometimes exacerbate health issues or cause unnecessary discomfort.
COMFORT OF BEING IN ONE’S OWN ENVIRONMENT
Being treated at home can ease a patient’s anxiety and stress levels. The familiar surroundings can help patients feel more relaxed and open up during their consultation, potentially leading to better communication and a more accurate diagnosis.
DIAGNOSTIC CLUES FROM HOME SETTING
Visiting a patient at home allows the GP to gather additional diagnostic clues by observing their living conditions, lifestyle, and environmental factors. This insight can be crucial for holistic treatment planning and can o er clues that might not be disclosed during a traditional clinic visit.
BETTER MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC CONDITIONS
Regular home visits can significantly improve the management of chronic conditions, allowing doctors to better monitor the patient’s progress and e ectiveness of treatment plans in a real-life setting. This can lead to more tailored and e ective treatment strategies.
LUXURY AND PERSONALISED SERVICE
Nowadays home visits are often viewed as a luxury service, signifying an elevated level of personal care and attention. The bespoke service that I o er caters particularly to high net-worth individuals who prefer privacy and exclusivity in their healthcare experience. If you’d rather I came to your workplace so as to have minimal disruption to your day, then so be it. Incorporating home visits into a patient care strategy not only enhances the quality of healthcare provided, but also strengthens the doctor-patient relationship, fostering trust and understanding that are crucial for e ective medical care.

Leading the WAY
Interview with Professor Mark Whiteley from The Whiteley
Clinic, the UK’s leading expert in the treatment of varicose veins and pelvic congestion syndrome
Q Can you tell us a little more about yourself and your clinics?
A I am Professor Mark Whiteley, consultant venous surgeon and executive chairman of The Whiteley Clinic, the UK’s leading vein clinic and an internationally recognised centre of excellence for varicose vein treatments and pelvic congestion syndrome. The Whiteley Clinic is known throughout the vein world for our multi award-winning research and innovative treatment methods, leading to the lowest possible recurrence rates and high long term patient satisfaction. We have seven clinics across the UK in London, Guildford, Henley, Poole, Bristol and recently opened in Manchester and Liverpool.
Q What are varicose veins?
A Varicose veins are abnormally large bulging veins that can be seen pressing out the skin of the legs or vulva/scrotum when standing or sitting. They bulge because of the pressure of the blood inside them. This occurs because the underlying veins have failed valves, reversing the blood flow from the heart and back into the veins. Visible varicose veins in the legs can cause tired, aching, heavy legs and swollen ankles, but can also lead to red or brown stains around the ankles, bleeding, leg ulcers (open sores), or blood clots (DVT).
Q What are hidden varicose veins?
A “Hidden varicose veins” is the name given to the same underlying problem, but without
bulging veins, and therefore they cannot be seen. As such, these patients have the same problems and risks as those who have visible varicose veins, but do not know that they have them because they are not visible on the surface. They might be hidden because they are too deep in the leg, or because they are hidden deep inside the pelvis.
Hidden varicose veins in the legs still cause tired, aching, heavy legs as well as the skin damage, clots and ulcers, but within the pelvis can cause an aching feeling, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder, pain during intercourse, lower back pain, hip pain and haemorrhoids of the vulva or vagina in females or the scrotum in males.
Q What can this lead to?
A One in three (30%) of women attending gynaecology outpatients with chronic pelvic pain have pelvic hidden varicose veins, known as pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) or pelvic venous disorders (PeVD). Unfortunately, these conditions are not recognised by most gynaecologists and these patients are frequently told that they have endometriosis or that there is “nothing wrong with them”.
It is estimated that approximately one million women in the UK are su ering from pelvic pain due to PCS and are not being given the diagnosis by their gynaecologists due to lack of understanding in how to diagnose and treat the condition.
To address this, we have just opened a new women’s health clinic in London’s Bond Street in February. Led by Dr Sophie Strong, a consultant gynaecologist specialising in pelvic pain, it will be the first women’s pelvic pain clinic in the UK to specialise in both PCS and other gynaecological causes of pelvic pain.
Q Can visible or hidden varicose veins be easily treated?
A Although many doctors still think veins are easy, research has shown that there are many di erent patterns of veins disease – many relatively easy to treat for the specialist, but often there are complexities that cause early recurrence if missed.
Venous duplex ultrasound scans at The Whiteley Clinic are performed by a team of dedicated Vascular Scientists/Sonographers, allowing the Whiteley Clinic trained consultants to devise a complete and personalised treatment plan for each patient.
All treatments are walk-in, walk-out and performed under local anaesthetic, reducing the risks of general anaesthetic, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

FURNITURE THE ART OF
How the right furnishings can transform your space
By CRISTINA RUGO
Traditionally art is comprised of paintings and sculptures.
However, as the worlds of art, design and, to an extent, fashion continue to merge, furniture is no longer purely viewed as a functional item.
At Greycaine we are seeing a shift in consumer needs; whilst a piece of furniture is still required for its functionality, design has evolved, and furniture is becoming a true piece of art. We know art has the power to transform a space, but so does great furniture which can really anchor the interior design of a room. This is particularly apparent in bigger pieces such as a statement sofa or even a dining table which will take centre stage and become the focal point.
Individuality and creativity are imperative. The buyer wants to refl ect their style and when making a considered purchase, consumers want to feel like they are buying a unique piece rather than something widely available. Furniture, like the art we choose for our home, is
extremely personal and an extension of our personality which enables homeowners to express their individual tastes. This is why we are also seeing a spike in bespoke joinery requests particularly in relation to wardrobes, as they can be crafted to exact requirements and aesthetic preference, creating a piece unique for the consumer.
The artistry in furniture lies in its ability to balance form and function, offering a piece that’s both visually captivating but also practical. When chosen carefully, a single piece can set the tone for an entire space, commanding the attention it deserves.
Consumers are investing in furniture, purchasing pieces they love, but that are impeccably crafted and ultimately built to last. These are viewed almost as heirloom pieces, beautiful furniture to be enjoyed and taken on a journey either from property to property or passed to future generations to continue to enjoy.
Buyers are looking for pieces with longevity, rather than trend led designs. Art often transcends trends, and an iconic
THE PLANA WARDROBE
piece of furniture will be relevant for years to come.
Greycaine’s Nefele Cloud Sofa epitomises this concept. With its sculptural, cloud-like form, it creates a sense of fluidity and movement away from the traditional, angular sofa designs. It redefines what furniture can be and blurs the lines between design and function, creating a piece of art that goes beyond a traditional sofa. It’s not just a sofa, it’s a statement, a talking point and a centrepiece.
The Nefele Cloud Sofa is the perfect example of bringing together style but also comfort, to create a functional and elegant piece of furniture. The playful curves and cloud-like design have been perfectly created for ergonomic support as well as visual impact. Crafted from long-pile, bi-elastic fabric with a threedimensional texture add to the cloud like
design with tactile, soft material used throughout.
Another example of how conventional furniture can redefine the boundaries between function and art is our Corinto Table. Crafted entirely from marble (available in Carrara, Grafite, Fior Di Pesco and Emperador Marble), the elegant Corinto Table is a sculptural masterpiece which will become the focal point in any space.
Every element of this piece reflects meticulous attention to detail, from the fluid organic lines and the striking allure of natural stone. This iconic piece can work in any setting whether placed in a contemporary space such as a living room or a more traditional dining room or even study, it serves as a beautiful centrepiece and becomes an independent piece of art.

TOWERING ABOVE
Looking for a unique Hertfordshire property to spend some time embracing the countryside? Look no further…
Commissioned by The Lee Valley Water Company, designed by Edmund Percey of Scherrer and Hicks and constructed in 1964, Tonwell Water Tower was built to provide the village and the neighbouring Sacombe estate with clean water at constant pressure.
Utility company water towers have largely been replaced in the UK by high pressure mains, so these varied and beautiful structures are falling into disuse. In 2020, it was bought by industrial designers, Matt and Ali Grey, who now specialise in the conversion of industrial buildings, and work began in the summer of 2021.
Tonwell Tower represents a culmination of years of meticulous planning and construction, driven by the passion and expertise of Matt and Ali, who turned a poignant inheritance opportunity into a visionary project and force for good.
With a mission to create one of the most sustainable holiday accommodations in the UK, the couple commissioned Daikin to install cutting edge, lowcarbon climate solutions in the property to aid its net zero aspirations. The tower stands poised to capture the imagination of travellers seeking unique and immersive experiences, and architectural lovers with an interest in revolutionary eco-friendly design.
In Tonwell Tower, Matt and Ali have created a four bedroom, four bathroom home, with a 600sqft (60sqm) combined living, kitchen, dining space on the top floor, and an 800sqft (80 sqm) roof terrace. All with breathtaking views over the countryside, and stretching as far as the City of London.
Absolutely was blown away when going behind the scenes at Tonwell Tower, so sat down with Matt to find out how they achieved such a feat.
Q Before Tonwell Tower, what kind of projects have you been involved in?
A As well as being employees, we have both had our own businesses. Ali, a software engineering company, building applications for Standard Chartered Bank, and myself, a menswear label, supplying retailers around the world from Harvey Nichols to United Arrows.
On top of that, we have built – to greater and lesser degree – three homes. The first was a narrow boat, built in 1977 by Swan Hunter shipbuilders. I bought it as a student in 1992 and spent 12 years converting it to a live-aboard, rebuilding, upgrading and refurbishing it.
Next, Ali and I bought the lower half of a Victorian terrace in Bermondsey. We added a ‘glass box’ extension and reformatted the layout to create a larger kitchen; added an extra bedroom, a dining room and a utility room; and expanded the bathroom to include a bath.
In 2011 we purchased a large redundant brick built Victorian water pumping station in Broxbourne and spent the next 10 years converting it. It involved a roof down refurbishment and a three-phase build programme, working on a third of the house at a time, whilst we lived in the remaining two thirds. The result is a 3,600sqft, five bedroom home, with a vaulted open plan living space, with large sliding doors opening onto woodland (airbnb.co.uk/h/ thepumpingstation).
Tonwell Water Tower was built to provide the village and the neighbouring Sacombe estate with clean water.
Q When did you first become aware of Tonwell Tower?
A We had seen the tower come up for auction, but hadn’t been in a position to purchase it. It was a huge disappointment because of its period, gorgeous aesthetic, remarkable suitability and location – and we thought, a never to be repeated opportunity. Thus, when it came back onto the market with surveys and plans, we were absolutely delighted.
Q What about the building attracted you to buying it?
A Tonwell is a lovely village in a great location. It is both isolated and an easy journey to local towns, transport and London. The tower’s location on the edge of the village and its disproportionate height gives it an almost unprecedented view of the countryside. You just don’t get seven storey buildings in the middle of the countryside.
The tower itself is beautiful. Its simple geometry, finish, proportions and counterintuitive aspect set it apart from most water towers. These same properties also make it perfectly suited to a domestic/holiday-let conversion. The gaps between the concrete ‘leaves’ are perfect for windows; the height between the ring beams and the tank is perfect for the inserted floors; the old tank is a perfect size for an open plan living space; the shaft is the perfect size for a staircase, the roof space is usable without significant changes, and the structure is not only sound, but strong enough to accommodate the structural changes and change in use.
It is unsullied by telecoms masts; it has access to utilities; it has access and parking; it is safe; it is hidden from the road but has 360° of unadulterated views; it
has miles and miles of footpath access on its doorstep; and the village has a nice pub. What more could you want?
Q Did you have an idea of what you wanted to do with the building pre-purchase?
A We had a very good idea of what we wanted to achieve and a fair idea of how we would do it. We spent the first ten months honing those ideas, measuring, planning and modelling them; and submitting a new planning application.
Q What was the biggest challenge?
A Unsurprisingly, the biggest challenge has been the height. It impacted every job, the movement of people and materials, time, and safety.
Careful logistic planning enabled us to manage all of these challenges. We started with ladders, a hoist and scaffolding and moved to a 21m scissor lift. We had to load appliances, bathroom furniture, and furniture to suit the logistics, rather than at times more appropriate to the build. Hence, we had a 100kg bathtub hanging off the wall for many months whilst we finished the ceilings, floors and walls around it; the kitchen spent a lot of time stacked in the middle of the floor in boxes; and the beds and mattresses kept shuttling from room to room.
Q How was the project sustainable?
A In the three Rs of sustainability, “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle”, we’ve done quite well. We have reused the structure, we reduced our material waste to a minimum, and with the help of Daikin, our heating runs on recycled heat.
Q What did you commission Daikin to do?
A Ensuring fresh, clean air and temperature control in a sealed structure where windows remain closed is essential. Daikin specified, supplied and installed the Heat Pump, hot water and heating system; and the mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR). They used a beautiful Altherma heat pump and a Duco MVHR. The Altherma inverter unit is perfect for its location, beautifully designed and subtly coloured and the indoor unit is similarly gorgeously designed with intuitive user controls both on the unit and via the Onecta app.
Daikin’s air source heat pump system, which runs at an impressive 300-400% efficiency, is a gamechanger. Unlike traditional heating methods, the ASHP system produces 3-4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of energy used, reducing electricity needs while delivering consistent warmth throughout the home. With underfloor heating, guests enjoy an even, gentle warmth without hot or cold spots – a significant comfort advantage over conventional radiators.
Q Would you say there is a particular design theme throughout the building?
A The tower’s mid 20th century architecture is a favourite of ours, as is furniture of the period. The interiors were always going to have 1970s colouring, finishes and furniture. Mahoganies, teaks, walnut, leather, formica and, of course, concrete. Tan, browns, greens and a splash of yellow. Kofod Larsen, Dyrlund, O.P.E., Selig and G Plan furniture. Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, even Deter Rams’ radio all played a part in our styling decisions.
Q Are there any design touches you are particularly proud of?
A I’m very pleased with the exterior and the way we have maintained the architect’s original design, whilst converting the tower to a home – which essentially means the incorporation of the windows. The frames
and glass are technically brilliant but just a simple frame; the sills and cowlings in between however, are bespoke and, I feel, particularly apposite. Their proportions, style and colour are of the period and they are pigeon proof, whilst the heads of the top floor windows house swift boxes. The intermediary floor, above ground, will eventually have louvred closures, but I’m rather pleased with its temporary aesthetic too!
The tank and its design are also very pleasing. The buttressed shelves, the slatted acoustic ceiling, the polished floor, the furniture and the kitchen all work beautifully together. The reeded glass bathroom walls in the bedrooms are just wonderful. And the spiral stairs! They are bespoke designed by me, cut, fabricated, welded and powder coated by separate local suppliers. And installed by me too! They’re a bu**er!
Q How wonderful are the views from the roof?
A The views from the top of the tower are, I would go as far as to say, unparalleled. There are very few places in the English countryside where you can see so much from such a height. Isolated free standing seven storey buildings in the middle of rolling fields are rare. On a clear day you can see as far as The Shard and Canary Wharf and every field and hill in between. At night you can see them again; every aircraft as it takes off from Luton, Stansted, City and Heathrow airports; and every star and satellite in the sky.
Q What are your plans now for Tonwell Tower?
A The tower is now, and will continue to be a holiday rental, whose customers will occasionally be us!

Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust offers up their top tips on bringing nature into your garden this spring
CURLED HEDGEHOG,
Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust is a local charity supported by people who care about protecting wildlife and is the leading voice for wildlife conservation in the area. Here, they share some tips on how you can make your garden more wildlife-friendly this spring.
CREATE A WILDER GARDEN
Spring is here and whilst we might have been looking out on our gardens over the winter months, pondering sunnier days ahead, now is the time to get outside and prepare to make our outside space what we want it to be for ourselves and wildlife.
Did you know that if we were to combine all of our gardens nationwide, they add up to an area greater than all of The Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves across the UK? That goes some way to showing how important they are – whether a small balcony, a window ledge, yard or country
pile, your outdoor space is part of the jigsaw, a rich mosaic and wider network of natural havens, linking urban green spaces with nature reserves and the wider countryside.
Every little action that you can take, from a small feature, such as a bird bath supplying fresh drinking and bathing water for birds, to a complete overhaul in making your garden wildlife-friendly for a wide variety of species, will make a difference for wildlife.
MAKE A POND
We’ve said it many times before but we will continue to shout it from the rooftops: making a pond is the best thing any of us can do for nature. Why? Well, ponds create a rich habitat, providing food, water, shelter and a breeding place for a huge variety of wildlife. Don’t think your pond has to be huge – a washing-up bowl pond can be supercharged with wildlife.
GIVE WILDLIFE A HOME
Bird boxes, bat boxes, Swift boxes, log piles, Hedgehog shelters, bug hotels, leaf litter… there are plenty of options you can consider to provide a home for wildlife. If you are practically minded you might want to have a go at building a bird box, or you could involve all the family in collecting components to make a mansion for bugs – insects in the garden provide a great feeding source for visiting wildlife!
Of course, it’s only right to consider what’s in this for you too. Think of the joy of watching the likes of blue tits and robins raising their

young knowing that you facilitated a home for them. Sit in the garden on a warm spring’s evening and let yourself be mesmerised by the swiftness and slightness of bats hunting insects at dusk, or spot a hedgehog passing through as you put your bins out and have the privilege of gaining an insight into its world.
GET PLANTING
A variety of ornamental plants is not only pleasing to us but to wildlife too. Buddleia, lavender and honeysuckle will attract butterflies, bees, moths and hoverflies, but there’s a wide variety of nectar-rich plants that you can choose from to create a showstopping display for you and nature. Find out some of the best plants for pollinating insects, as well as planting tips to get the most out of them. Watching butterflies on the wing is synonymous with bright, sunny days and a great way to boost wellbeing. You can put the foundations in place now for a fluttering display by growing host plants for caterpillars. Many garden centres are now labelling pollinator-friendly seeds and plants so take a look for these too.
GROW WILD
As long as you can live with it, don’t feel the need to be overly tidy in the garden. Nature loves us to be a little unkempt! Let the lawn grow a little longer, or leave a patch unmown
“Think of the joy of watching blue tits and robins raising their young”
and see what wildflowers begin to emerge. By leaving seedheads and plant stems uncut, you’ll provide a sanctuary for insects to shelter in. And just think of the time you’ll save – giving you precious hours to kick back and admire your garden visitors.
FEED THE BIRDS
If you have fed garden birds over winter, then please don’t stop now. Birds can be fed year-round, with spring being a great time to support successful breeding and rearing of young birds. In summer, those younger birds will benefit from easy food sources, whilst adult moulting birds will be glad of the extra energy provided by you.
Did you know that the Trust offer Wildlife Sponsorships for many of our most loved garden visitors, including bees, hedgehogs and song thrushes? Available in Digital or Postal Sponsorship Packs, these make great gifts for nature lovers and help to support species that are struggling in the region. Find out more at hertswildlifetrust.org.uk

A SUPER
MODEL
BoConcept has announced Helena Christensen as their Global Artistic Director
BoConcept has ushered in a new creative era as it appoints the world-renowned Danish supermodel, photographer and style icon Helena Christensen as Global Artistic Director for the brand.
In her new role, Helena will help to shape an exciting new chapter for the global interiors company, working closely with new design talent, featuring in and producing brand campaigns, and designing and styling pieces that speak to her effortless sense of style and easy elegance.
Helena lends her unique experience and perspective to BoConcept’s ‘Art of Living Danishly’ campaign, bringing to life what it means to live well through inspiring content series, engaging lifestyle pieces across BoConcept’s channels and conversations with fellow Danish creatives addressing what it is to “Live Danish”.
The appointment takes BoConcept’s longstanding practice of collaborating with renowned designers to a new level. Helena says: “This is a dream come true for me. I’ve always loved interiors and this speaks to so many of my passions for design, creativity, and living intentionally.”
FROM FASHION TO FURNITURE
Helena says her whole career has been about “what the eye sees and how it makes you feel”. As one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ group of supermodels that dominated catwalks, billboards and magazines in the ’90s, she was part of the fashion and culture explosion of the decade – front and centre of an era that shaped culture as we know it.
Now, she says, “the way I decorate my home is as important as how I dress myself”, and her love of home and deep appreciation for living well keeps her firmly in step with today’s zeitgeist, favouring wellness and self-care, and quality over quantity.
As part of her role, Helena will be designing furniture and developing fabrics for the brand. Interiors have always been a passion, and alongside her modelling and photography, she has worked in the interiors space for two decades. Twenty years ago she launched the concept store Butik in New York City with Leif Sigersen. She is also co-founder, with long-term collaborator Camilla Staerk, of their interior design and lifestyle studio Staerk & Christensen, which creates work across fashion, furniture, photography and film.
Recent design projects include collaborations with New York-based studio Bower on a range of home accessories and creating a special edition of the ‘Runner Chair’ with Danish designer Kasper Salto. The duo has also been working on an ongoing prefab project of three structural houses with Revolution Precrafted, alongside the architect Gulla Jonsdottir.
“This speaks to my passion for design and creativity ”
About her approach, Helena says: “Design is more than the details of aesthetics, it’s about how it makes you feel when you walk through the door,” she says. “When your environment is comforting, beautiful and feels like a true reflection of you, life is better. You’re freer, more productive, more creative and more relaxed and joyful. That matters a lot to me!"
DANISH DESIGN’S NEW WAVE
The partnership is also rooted in a shared Danish heritage and cultural experience. Copenhagen-born Helena, who lives in Manhattan and has a beach house on the Danish coast, joins BoConcept at a time when Danish design and the country’s creative and cultural output is globally influential – continuously shifting the dial across fashion, design, food and beyond.
“Being Global Artistic Director at BoConcept is more than just a role to me; it’s a creative journey of unpacking what it means to live well and sharing the beauty and brilliance of Danish design.”
Danish design played a crucial role in the mid-century modern movement, characterised by its clean lines and functional forms. This is still central to the new direction, but the new wave feels more playful and personal. It’s this
“I want to share the beauty and brilliance of Danish design”
marriage of minimalism’s sleek lines and Helena’s maverick ability to be nothing other than herself that makes the partnership so invigorating.
THE POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Helena’s first creative endeavour comes with the launch of ‘Flora’, an exclusive set of art prints from her personal photography archive, available to buy in March 2025. The capsule of botanical prints highlights Helena’s love of nature and capturing the beauty of every day. “There’s something so fascinating about looking at a flower, deeply and intensely,” Helena says. “The magic and complexity of nature is almost impossible to believe and understand, but I’m able to capture it, somehow, with my camera.”
A celebrated photographer, Helena’s work has been published extensively in art and design magazines and is frequently showcased in galleries from Europe to the US. Helena was also a founding partner and creative director of the hugely influential Nylon magazine.
She says photography has become “like breathing” to her. “I love the simple
fact that you can capture a moment in time. I see everything in frames. I am constantly searching for moments and always curious about everything that happens in my way.”
WORLD TRAVELLER AND UN AMBASSADOR
In a role in which she combines her passion for photography with humanitarian work, in 2019 Helena was appointed a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, travelling the globe to document the struggles of refugees and displaced people. “This is a role I take very seriously,” she says. “The fact that I get to travel the world and meet people who are refugees or displaced persons and photograph them, talk to them and convey their stories to the rest of the world is the most fulfilling and humbling job I will ever have.”
BoConcept is thrilled to be working with Helena and excited to see the vibrant, unique perspective this global icon will bring to the story of Danish design at BoConcept. Chief Marketing Officer Paula McGuinness says: “We are truly excited to harness
our BoConcept design expertise with Helena’s intrinsic sense of global style and her Danish life philosophy. We look forward to shaping a new agenda together to inspire consumers around the world.”
BoConcept was founded in 1952 in Denmark and today is the world’s most global furniture retailer, with over 300 stores spanning 64 countries. The brand works with award-winning designers to create collections of furniture, accessories and lighting for private homes and business spaces. Under the heading ‘Live Ekstraordinær’, BoConcept is committed to bringing its flexible Interior Design Service and industryleading customisation to spaces both private and public – without compromising on design vision or aesthetics.

Tomas Kitchen Living are makers of truly wonderful kitchens and furniture. They have gorgeous design studios in North London, St Albans and Cambridge, where everything is hand-built to order to the highest possible standard.
CLASS SHEER
Why Tomas Kitchen Living is the stylish option for the hub of the home
The journey usually begins with a visit to their website, which is jam packed with images, info and useful articles. From there a showroom visit can be arranged – this can be either for a quick initial look around or a full design consultation. In any event you can rest assured that there are absolutely no pushy salespeople jumping around.
Thanks to this ‘super-lean’ business model, Tomas Kitchen Living have managed to keep the price tag reasonably grounded. Founding Director Tomas explains that “by having no dealerships, salespeople and permanently open showrooms burning up energy six or seven days a week, the top-quality products we make can still be supplied with an upper middle price tag”. It’s not ‘cheap’ but thanks to this directness, the value is certainly there in what they do.
The quality of their work is undeniable, but beyond this, one is struck by how incredibly stylish and tasteful everything is. From

the wonderful kitchens through to the free-standing CASE & TABLE COLLECTION and the Danish Furniture & Lighting side – the style is truly beautiful.
As a complete kitchen company, everything is covered under one roof. If you’re doing a ‘swap-out’ they will visit, measure up and work with you to create the perfect layout. From there, quotes are produced, and the team takes care of everything – stripping out the kitchen, organising trades, and installing the kitchen (which as numerous reviews will confirm will be amazing). If your new kitchen is for a newly built space, architectural drawings are converted, and design work takes place in one of the three design studios.

Choosing and planning your new kitchen shouldn’t be a chore – although with huge choices and styles to look at it can be daunting to compile and then refine a wish list. At Moneyhill Interiors we try to take the pressure off, by taking a proper brief. Ideally we like to sit down and chat about how you live, how many children and pets you have, how you cook, how many of your household prep and cook in your kitchen, and then allocate as much space as we possibly can to make the best use of space and light.
Our website at moneyhillinteriors.com offers a peek into the many different projects we have undertaken in our 30+ years in business, and shows examples of custom built British cabinetry from Jane Cheel Furniture & Davonport
DREAM Live the
Furniture, to high tech modern German from Pronorm and stunning Italian designs from Arrital. Virtually all the images on our website are finished projects of varying sizes, from new build projects, to smaller extensions and kitchen updates. We are pleased to report our previous clients are happy to recommend our services, which account for a 70% recommendation tally. Whilst the majority of work undertaken is kitchens, we also design utility rooms, pantries, boot rooms, studies, TV pieces and bedrooms, all designed with care to maximise space and light in your home.
Whilst budget is of course a huge consideration and occasionally on the short side, we prepare plans and costings that are as accurate as possible, to include installation of all the cabinetry and worktops.
Our estimates are your real costs, and as long as we have received a 25% deposit will remain true. It is helpful if
you come prepared with a budget in mind, as it certainly helps our designer initially. There is no charge for our design service and we are happy to come to you at home or arrange a consultation in our showroom. We can work from builders' drawings or architects' plans too. We also offer many of the appliance manufacturers such as Sub Zero & Wolf, Miele, Fisher & Paykel, Liebherr and Quooker and many more.

SHUTT CASE OPEN AND
Absolutely speaks to Sean Lane, owner and director of Shuttercraft St Albans, about the key role shutters play in interior design
St Albans was named the most fashionable city in the UK in a 2021 study.
Interior designer Jessica Schertle called it, “A hub for interior design” in the June 2024 edition of Absolutely Hertfordshire. Here, Sean Lane, owner and director of Shuttercraft St Albans, explores his business’s contribution to the area’s interior design.
Q Why did you get into the shutter business?
A I moved to the UK from South Africa (SA) four years ago, bringing my experience in interior design and business management, from many years of renovating, designing and managing properties in SA. I embraced my British roots, settled in St Albans and began working at a solar energy company, igniting my passion for eco-friendly solutions. As a local to St Albans, I appreciate its unique charm and when buying a business, I sought one which allowed me to merge my passion
for bespoke interior design with sustainable practices.
Q Why are Shutters an important part of interior design?
A Bespoke shutters enhance your home’s style, offering customisation in colour, style, and material. They provide privacy and light control whilst being low maintenance and dust-resistant. Additionally, premium shutters can increase your property’s resale value and improve its ‘kerb appeal’, making them an important design element beyond simply controlling light.
Q Tell us about Shuttercraft St Albans…
A At Shuttercraft St Albans, we offer a personalised service starting with an in-home consultation to discuss and customise your shutter preferences. We provide a range of shutter styles, colours, and materials, as well as, specialised blinds. Our team ensures precise measurements and competitive quotes.
We also collaborate with your chosen interior decorators and we install your shutters with care, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal. Our products are designed to fit various window and door shapes, providing durability, light control, privacy, and insulation. We also offer the Portchester security shutter range, an architectural-grade aluminium product which promises elegant design, as well as safety and security. We are 5-Star rated on Trustpilot and accredited by the British Blind and Shutter Association (BBSA), emphasising high standards of workmanship, service, and fair trading. We serve St Albans, Harpenden, Welwyn Garden City, Radlett, Rickmansworth and all surrounding areas.
Q How eco-friendly are you?
A Shuttercraft St Albans offers energyefficient shutters made from natural materials, which can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 64% compared to single glazing. Our shutters help to insulate homes and save on energy costs. Shuttercraft is committed to being a responsible retailer, which is evident in our partnership with ‘Ecologi’ since 2022. If you’re considering shutters for your property, reach out to arrange a time to discuss bespoke services and bring your interior design vision to life.

New ideas to revive the forgotten spaces in your home
From man cave to magnificent extension… new approaches to garage conversions can turn underused areas into multifunctional spaces for living, working and entertaining.
It’s time we exposed the ‘man cave’ for what it is: an excuse for a reuse of a neglected space. If your garage lies largely dormant, damp and uninviting to any but your most loyal friends, you might be surprised to discover how easy it is to convert it into a multi-purpose living space that you and your family will actually enjoy.
Imagine the possibilities. Most garages are around three quarters the size of the average living room – so plenty of scope for working, entertaining, eating or even putting up guests (perhaps not eating guests).
Once you’ve got an idea of how to use the space, get going on the practicalities. Most conversions fall within permitted development rights so the only hurdle
is meeting building regs. That means insulation upgrades of walls, ceiling and especially the floor, to meet habitation standards.
All of that is easier than it sounds and most conversions can be completed within a month. It’s worth spending time thinking through your plans and choosing windows and doors that will fit seamlessly.
But what if you like your garage as it is. Could it be easier to use? New garage doors can transform an awkward, insecure or dated doorway into the portal of dreams it should be.
If you are one of the few who uses a garage as Alfieri Maserati intended, you may well be wondering what to do about its ageing wooden doors. Worse still, you might be living under the tyranny of the up and over.
Either way, good news awaits you as stylish innovations in garage door design and function, allied to very smart colour finishing, can revive the
frontage to honour whatever may lie within.
Have you got it covered? Renovating flat roofs is simpler and more reliable than ever. If your garage has a flat roof, doing a conversion would be a good time to consider ways to revive it. New techniques and new synthetic meshing systems are less complicated to install than older methods, and provide much more reliable and hardwearing surfaces.
There is also a big improvement for all kinds of flat roof extensions to take advantage of. SEH BAC use a flexible, single resin GRP system combining the best elements of fibre glass with the versatility of overlay systems. It provides a seamless, tough and flexible membrane for any roof or balcony area.
For more information on how SEH BAC can help with your next home improvement project, visit sehbac.com or call 0800 666444
FIVE OF THE BEST
QUORN STONE PICK OUT THEIR FLOORING TRENDS FOR 2025
As we celebrate 30 years of Quorn Stone this year, our passion for beautiful stone flooring remains at the core of who we are. Read on for our top 5 flooring trends for 2025 and be inspired for your own project.
Textured Floor Tiles
2025 is all about texture in the home and textured limestone is at the top of our list for flooring. Natural stone tiles remain an enduring and diverse choice when it comes to floor tiles, used for centuries in estates and country homes, loved for their beauty and practicality. Across the interiors industry, we have seen more wanting to create this timeless feel in their kitchens, whilst also wanting to incorporate the trend of textured and tactile finishes. Opt for textured grey stone flooring for a contemporary yet organic take on traditional kitchen flooring.
Ivory Stone Effect Tiles
Ivory stone effect tiles are set to be a key floor trend for 2025, offering a
calming neutral aesthetic that perfectly complements modern or traditional country interiors. Stone effect porcelain is a wonderful alternative to natural stone, with the prints available more realistic than ever, offering blends of soft ivory and white that will brighten any space.
Marble Flooring
Marble is a timeless material that has been used in the home for hundreds of years and has seen a resurgence in recent years as flooring. Marble tiles offer both charm and practicality, exuding a luxurious feel, and are available in a whole host of shades and patterns, from a classic Carrara white marble to bolder more dramatic hues. Marble flooring as chequerboard or with cabochon inserts will instantly elevate a hallway and create an effortlessly inviting space.
Honey Beige Limestone
any interior and any style, complementing all colour palettes. Limestone tiles are versatile and hardwearing options for the home with these warmer toned hues and finishes being a popular choice for flooring that will stand the test of time.
Herringbone Flooring
The final flooring trend for 2025 we are seeing is herringbone floor tiles. Herringbone has been a much-loved laying pattern as wall tiles for many years, but now homeowners are choosing this design for flooring, with limestone bricks or ‘stackers’ providing a rustic and natural take on herringbone tiles.
When it comes to flooring, certain styles never date, and honey beige limestone is the one material you can guarantee will work in mystonefloor.com

National O er Day in the UK: A guide for parents
National O er Day is a significant milestone in the UK education system, marking the day when parents and guardians are informed of the school placement allocated to their child. Here, Absolutely explores the purpose of National O er Day, the processes involved, and how it can help parents in making informed decisions about their child's education.
WHAT IS NATIONAL OFFER DAY?
National O er Day refers to the date when local authorities notify parents of the school their child has been allocated for the upcoming academic year. The dates vary depending on the school level. Primary school allocations (Reception year) are announced on 16th April. Secondary school allocations (Year 7) are announced on 3rd March.
On these dates, parents receive confirmation via email or letter from their local council regarding which school their child has been o ered. This process ensures that every child in the country has a school place for the next academic year.
THE SCHOOL ADMISSIONS PROCESS
Understanding how the admissions process works is crucial for parents to navigate National O er Day e ectively. The process typically follows these steps:
1. RESEARCHING SCHOOLS
Parents are encouraged to research potential schools well in advance. Key factors to consider include: Ofsted ratings – inspections provide insights into school performance; School performance data – exam results and progress scores; Proximity – distance from home may impact admissions; School ethos and values – ensuring alignment with parental preferences; Special educational needs (SEN) provision – availability of support if required.
2.
SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS
Applications are submitted through the local council’s admissions portal. The deadline for submissions was late 2024 for secondary school places, and the start of this year for primary school places.
Parents can list multiple preferences, usually up to six schools, ranked in order of preference.
3. ADMISSIONS CRITERIA AND ALLOCATION
Schools use specific admissions criteria to allocate places. Common factors include: Catchment area – proximity to the school; Siblings – priority for children with siblings already attending; Faithbased criteria – relevant for faith schools; Academic selection – for grammar and selective schools; Special circumstances – looked-after children and those with additional needs may receive priority. Local authorities process applications and allocate places based on these criteria.
4. NATIONAL OFFER DAY NOTIFICATION
On National O er Day, parents receive a formal o er confirming their child’s school placement. If the preferred school is not allocated, the letter may also include details on waiting lists and the appeals process.
HOW NATIONAL OFFER DAY HELPS PARENTS
While National O er Day may be stressful, it serves several important functions that help parents make informed choices about their child’s education.
1. CLARITY ON SCHOOL PLACEMENT
National O er Day provides parents with a clear outcome on their child’s school placement, enabling them to prepare for the transition ahead.
2. TIME TO MAKE DECISIONS
If parents are unhappy with the allocation, they have time to consider their options, such as accepting the o er and preparing for their child’s start, joining a waiting list for a preferred school, or lodging an appeal if they believe the admissions decision was unfair.
3. UNDERSTANDING THE APPEALS PROCESS
Parents have the right to appeal the decision if they believe an error was made in the admissions process. Appeals must be submitted within a specific timeframe, and while success rates vary, it provides an avenue for parents to challenge the allocation.
4. EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS
If an appeal is unsuccessful, parents can explore alternative schooling options such as applying for other schools with available places, or exploring home education as an option.
WHILE IT CAN BE A STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE, PREPARING FOR DIFFERENT OUTCOMES CAN MAKE THE TRANSITION SMOOTHER
5. BETTER PREPARATION FOR FUTURE ADMISSIONS
For parents with younger children, National O er Day provides valuable insight into the admissions process, helping them make better-informed choices in the future.
TIPS FOR PARENTS NAVIGATING NATIONAL OFFER DAY
1. RESEARCH AND APPLY STRATEGICALLY
Choose a mix of aspirational, realistic, and safe options. Consider schools within the catchment area. Attend open days and gather as much information as possible.
2. REMAIN CALM AND FLEXIBLE
If the preferred school isn’t allocated, remember that children often thrive in di erent environments. Keep an open mind about the allocated school.
3. UNDERSTAND THE APPEALS PROCESS
Gather strong evidence if appealing a decision. Meet deadlines for submitting an appeal.
4. ENGAGE WITH THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Connect with other parents for insights and support. Arrange a visit to the allocated school to assess its suitability.
National O er Day is a crucial event in the UK education system. While it can be a stressful experience, understanding the admissions process, preparing for di erent outcomes, and knowing the options available can make the transition smoother. By researching schools thoroughly, making strategic applications, and being prepared for any outcome, parents can ensure their child receives a quality education that meets their needs and aspirations.
LESSONS in LIFE
in learning. Children thrive in the outdoors and this enables them to be curious and appreciate the beauty of nature. Additionally we keep moving forward with our digital strategy and equipping children with the tools to be ready for the future.
Q What is your vision for the Prep School over the next five years?
Head of Prep at St Columba's College, St Albans, Richard McCann on 25 years in education
Q Could you give us an overview of your career to date?
A I have been in education some 25 years now. I have been blessed to have a variety of experiences and roles. After qualifying I taught Careers and Sport at a grammar school in Belfast. I then did one year teaching English in Chaing Mai, Thailand. And then I joined St Columba’s College in St Albans in 2002. It has felt like a second home and I have had an array of di erent roles.
Q What do you love most about being the Head of Prep at St Columba’s?
A Being able to make an impact on the children’s lives and being able to work with such a great dedicated sta ng body. I love the fact that no matter what is going on in life the children will make you laugh, test you and always seek direction and reassurance. No day is ever the same!
Q What makes your Prep School di erent?
A The strong sense of community and the individual attention each child receives. Whilst we don’t get everything necessarily right (all of the time), we all work hard to make a di erence and understand that our parents are making sacrifices to send their children to a community that o ers such a broad and balanced curriculum. The Prep School sets the tone in these vital foundation years and develops soft skills as well. We understand that there is a bigger picture in life and that childhood is precious and to be cherished. It is also hugely beneficial to be a 4-18 through school as the links with the Senior School are real and authentic relationships are central to transition.
Q Are you introducing anything new for 2025?
A We are excited to be revamping our Forest and Outdoor area, which is so vital
A To keep thriving and always be relevant and forward moving. We understand with the increased burden of VAT imposed on independent schools just how important it is to work closely with our families. To keep values at the heart of everything and ensure children are happy and fulfilled. We need to model the spirit of our founder, Andre Coindre, and keep liaising with our global network of schools formed by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. We have a duty of care to ensure that all our young people leave us with confidence and positivity about what the future has in store. As Brother Martin Hernandez said: “We are here to show them not how to make a living, but how to make a life.’’ At St Columba’s College and Preparatory School we will continue to ensure all children and families are “known, valued and treasured”.

OUTDOORS
The inside story of how Beechwood Park’s Forest School opens their pupils’eyes to the natural world
At Beechwood Park School in Hertfordshire, we are fortunate to have over 60 acres of woodlands and parkland where our children can learn, explore, and play. Our Forest School is enjoyed by all year groups, from our youngest Woodlanders (Nursery) through to our Top Formers (Year 8), under the expert guidance of Becky Le Bas, our FSA-qualified Head of Forest School. A sense of awe and wonder is very much a part of our time outside. From the emerging snowdrops in the depths of winter to a tame robin coming to say hello or fantastic fungi that magically appear overnight! Our woodlands provide the perfect place for pupils to learn to respect their natural environment and begin to identify the diversity of species which we are so lucky to have around us.
Children love to be outside. In our sessions, they are active learners whilst experiencing life in the ‘great outdoors’. Forest School boosts children’s independence and selfconfidence in an inspirational natural outdoor setting with freedom to explore using multiple senses. This is a holistic approach to learning which includes creative and imaginative play, physical activity, language and communication, problem-solving, negotiation, and teamwork skills, to name but a few benefits. Alongside this, pupils learn to take managed risks in a safe environment whilst also developing resilience.
Wellbeing is a prime benefit of our time in the woods. A chance to be outdoors in a green environment is well known to be hugely important for our mental health, and we see that this is clearly true with the happy, relaxed children both during and after our sessions. Of course, Forest School sessions also hugely enrich the curriculum with opportunities for links
to anything from maths to art, geography to literacy, and a wealth of science.
Beyond academics, our Forest School nurtures a deep connection with nature, fostering environmental awareness and responsibility. Through hands-on experiences like building shelters, whittling wood, and cooking over an open fire, children gain a deeper appreciation for nature while developing practical skills and a sense of responsibility for the world around them. The sense of achievement and adventure is evident in every session. Ask any of our children at Beechwood Park School if they enjoy Forest School, and you will hear a resounding YES!
