ABSOLUTELY’S March issue highlights
Paul Hardcastle had a hit song all about the number 19 – but for us here at Absolutely this month, it is all about the number 20. It is amazing to realise that this month marks two decades since Tom Kerridge and his wife, Beth, took over The Hand and Flowers on West Street, Marlow. We find out the story behind getting the keys – it involved being a little cheeky with the bank manager – the pressures of being a two Michelin star pub, and why it's the chefs who have come through the ranks who have kept the enthusiasm going.
It is also 20 years since Staffan Tollgard decided to put his design talents to good use and launch his own business. Soon his wife Monique joined the team, and she looks back at some of their incredible work, including one simply stunning Buckinghamshire mansion.
That interview is part of our Home special, which amounts to just over 20 pages of insight. It's all in the number. 4

Marlow institutions The Hand and Flowers and The Coach are celebrating special anniversaries this year. Tom Kerridge looks back at a gamble and how chefs like Sarah Hayward have driven the business on
When it comes to creating a legacy, a humble carrot may not be what springs to mind
when discussing an iconic restaurant. But then again, The Hand and Flowers isn’t just another restaurant: in fact, we would always consider the Marlow institution to be a pub that does fantastic food.
However you define it, one thing that isn’t up for debate is its popularity and success – and in March, it celebrates 20 years since opening its doors for the first time. To mark the occasion, Tom Kerridge is bringing back some classics from yesteryear on the aptly named Classics Menu, which is where the aforementioned carrot pops up.
“The shin of beef had to go on,” he grins about his favourite dish on the menu. “The carrot that goes with it ended up being in a TV show. That TV show ended up being in a recipe book, loads of people cooked those carrots at Christmas, I get told about it all the time. We also have a version of that dish that’s in M&S. We have gone from setting up that dish 20 years ago, going from a pub with no Michelin stars to a pub with two Michelin stars, and also then having an opportunity for that dish to be in a high street supermarket space. There’s something really amazing about that dish that I love so much.”
It’s a slightly o kilter answer that in a way sums up the opening of The Hand and Flowers. Tom was 30 when he and his wife, Beth, decided to open their own place, and after searching far and wide, this spot in Marlow came up. “We had no money and this was a tenancy for Greene King, which is di erent to a leasehold, making it a little cheaper to open up,” Tom explains. “We still had to raise £75,000 to get in there, which we did by maxing out our credit cards and lying to the bank by saying we were doing a small extension on a cottage we were living in back in Norfolk! They gave us some money, but instead of doing an extension we gave it to Greene King,” Tom chuckles. “The bank were not that happy when they found out, but they were left with two options. It was di erent 20 years ago,
you actually had a bank manager, a human being you could speak to. When he found out, he was left with two options: he could either call the money in, or he could let us have a go to then pay it back – which he did.
“WITHIN TEN MONTHS THE HAND HAD WON A MICHELIN STAR”
“We took the opportunity and went for it. I opened it up with myself and Beth running front of house, my best mate came along and ran the bar, and I had two other guys in the kitchen with us and that was it.
Within ten months it had won a Michelin star and then we just decided to keep driving forward. The idea was for Beth to be able to make art and for me to be able to cook, and that was it – there wasn’t this aim of getting to the point where this pub was two Michelin stars. We had no idea
we would still be here 20 years later, the way it has progressed and the journey we have gone on, and the people who have been on the journey with us like Sarah.”
Sitting next to Tom today is Sarah Hayward, who is the head chef of The Coach down the road from The Hand and Flowers, which itself is marking 10 years since opening – an anniversary that Sarah shares. “I started on the 21st January 2015. I was around just as The Coach was doing its soft launch,” she says about when she started working at The Hand and Flowers. “I was young back then, so it was quite intimidating. I had definitely never worked in a two Michelin star restaurant before, and the food was very di erent to
anything I had also done previously. It was intimidating, but it didn’t scare me o .”
“In the environment of a two Michelin star kitchen, there is a level of consistency you have to hit every day,” Tom adds. “Can you do that again and again and again? It’s almost like training an athlete, you have to go through repetitive motions over and over. And that pressure you put on yourself… We try to always create an environment where people can feel comfortable. The intimidation and worry people have as younger chefs is ‘can I actually do it?’.
“Without making Sarah big headed, there is no arrogance with her, she is incredibly humble, she works with such a strong ethic, her morals are in the right place with how she treats other people, she has self drive, she wants to learn, she is a confident young woman that has that ability, and she is level headed. You could see that 10 years ago, that this is somebody who wants to do something.”
Was opening The Coach always part of a plan? “Not really,” Tom shakes his head. “It took us 10 years being open at The Hand before we opened The Coach. As we were driving The Hand forward, and I was in that kitchen on a constant basis and competing on the likes of the Great British Menu, I could see from a business point of view that there was no point opening a second space if we were not operating to 90-100% out of the first space, otherwise it is just wasted space.
“THE COACH IS PROBABLY IN THE BEST SPACE IT HAS EVER BEEN”
“It came through organic growth of people and sta to be honest,” he continues.
“We had at that point a chef with us called Nick Beardshaw, who was sous chef underneath the head chef Aaron Mulliss at that point at The Hand and Flowers. Nick is an incredible chef and a brilliant person, similar to Sarah in the way he works with people, operates with humility, knows how to talk to people, guests and front of house sta – he hasn’t got a chef arrogance, he has this ability to communicate. He was pushing for a head chef position, but the head chef of The Hand and Flowers was not leaving. We were left with two options.
One was to go OK, let’s invest our time and energy in Nick and see if there is another site, or Nick leaves and all those amazing skills he has got goes into someone else’s business. At the same point The Coach down the road came up for lease and it was literally one afternoon between services, I walked up the road with Beth, we saw the site and we took it on.”
How did Sarah feel taking over The Coach’s kitchen? “Terrified!” she laughs. “The Coach is such a special place, Tom and Nick have these big, amazing personalities and they have built such a reputation with customers, it is a very people orientated pub. I was absolutely terrified of stepping into their shoes, and that my tiny little feet would never fill their massive shoes.”
“The Coach is probably in the best space it has ever been in terms of personality of the chef running it,” Tom steps in. “A chef who has managed to grab hold of something and made it their own. Sarah being recognised by the Michelin Guide for being Young Chef of the Year a couple of years ago was Michelin’s way of saying well done Sarah, this is definitely your own, we recognise you for what you have done there. It’s not another achievement just maintaining a star, it’s actually a recognition of a chef for what she’s done. So that opportunity she has grabbed with both hands to put it into this space.”
Like The Hand and Flowers, The Coach will be marking its anniversary with celebratory fare, as Sarah explains. “We are bringing back old Coach dishes, favourites, classics, ones that people are dying for us to bring back and we are
integrating them into the menu, so they have got a 10th anniversary logo next to them and they are making a guest appearance, and will go in and out on the menu across the year. We have just brought back the rhubarb and custard choux bun, which is one of my absolute favourites. We have also just put on The Coach baked potato, which gets us a lot of stick and I love it! We have a few versions of that.”
Pressures will always be present, particularly with the current financial squeeze the UK is facing – “Right now it’s very di cult,” Tom sighs – but from the outside looking in, The Hand and Flowers
and The Coach both look in rude health.
“We are in a fortunate position that we have been in business for 20 years, we have gone through recessions before, we have gone through Covid, lots of dark times, and this is another time we just have to go, hey, we will get through it,” Tom says. “We will have to make some hard and di cult decisions I am sure, but in 10 years we will hopefully be celebrating The Coach being 20 years old.” That’s a dangled carrot worth pursuing.

The Henley Festival is all set to return later this year, and once again has pulled out all the stops with its line-up and a host of attractions
The UK’s only black-tie music and arts festival, Henley Festival 2025, returns from 9-13 July featuring a world-class music programme of pop, world, classical, folk and jazz set alongside stellar comedy and cabaret, stunning art galleries and sculpture installations, roving performers, as well as dining, drinks, dancing and jaw-dropping fireworks. Set across five unmissable summer nights on the stunning Henley-onThames riverside, this year’s event looks the best yet – and Absolutely was given a sneak peek at who and what to expect.
Diana Ross proudly presents the majestic 2025 ‘A Symphonic Celebration’, opening this year’s Henley Festival on the iconic Floating Stage. For the first time ever, Diana Ross will be accompanied by the grandeur of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, surrounding her legendary voice in a world of splendour,
love, and music. This unforgettable evening will feature a full orchestra of timeless hits, including Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Stop! In the Name of Love, Upside Down, I'm Coming Out, and many more.
On Thursday, beloved band McFly take to The Floating Stage, playing hits from their breakthrough single Five Colours in Her Hair to 2023’s full-force rock album Power to Play. The past 21 years has seen the band score seven number one singles, seven Top 10 albums, multiple platinum certifications and a Brit Award for Best British Pop – and still remain the youngest band to ever have a debut album go straight to number one, outranking The Beatles!
Following her captivating Floating Stage show last year, Henley Festival is thrilled to welcome back the world-renowned saxophonist Ellie Sax to Pure Heaven on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Ellie is set to bring her trademark electrifying performance, vibrant energy, unique style and seamless blend of classical training with dance music to the festival’s late night club. One of the most sought-after musicians in the world of dance music, her career has spanned an array of global
stages, club floors and international party hotspots, and – of course – Henley Festival.
Henley Festival is also thrilled to welcome iconic singer-songwriter Rick Astley on the Friday evening, alongside an epic big swing band. Astley needs little introduction – his era-defining classic Never Gonna Give You Up topped charts the world over and catapulted the young Lancastrian on a journey that would encompass eight consecutive UK Top 10 hits and 40 million sales. In 2016, Astley celebrated his halfcentury by releasing 50, which raced to the top of the charts and began a seven-week run in the Top 10. His latest album, Are We There Yet?, was released in 2023, peaking at number two on the UK album chart. Over his career, he has performed at numerous iconic venues such as the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2023, and headlined multiple world tours, including a sold-out tour in 2024. He published his first and only o cial autobiography, Never, in 2024.
As the sun goes down on Henley Festival’s Friday evening, one of the UK’s most influential radio DJs Jo Whiley will fill the festival’s club – Pure Heaven – with festival anthems for late night revellers.
“IT'S AN UNFORGETTABLE MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL FOR THE COMMUNITY”
Whiley rose to prominence in the 1990s as a trailblazing DJ on BBC Radio 1, where she became a voice for indie and alternative music through her flagship show, The Jo Whiley Show, and earned a reputation as a tastemaker in the music industry. Since 2011, Jo has been a fixture on BBC Radio 2, sharing a mix of nostalgia and fresh sounds.
The mind blowing musical experience Hacienda Classical will open Saturday night’s Floating Stage performances, combining the spirit of the club with the timeless sounds of classic dance tracks. Carefully curated by Graeme Park and brought to life by the power of the Manchester Camerata Orchestra, alongside vocalists and special guests, these iconic reinterpretations of floorfilling dance anthems never fail to deliver an electrifying experience.
On Sunday – the final evening at Henley Festival – the Floating Stage will welcome two incredible musical talents to close a star-studded week of performances. First, global music sensation Matteo Bocelli will take to the stage as part of his European 2025 tour Summer Nights. Son and sometimes collaborator of renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli, Matteo Bocelli has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages (his debut performance at age 18 was at Rome’s Colosseum and he sold out the Sydney Opera House on his A Night With Matteo tour). Following the success
of his debut album Matteo, he continues to forge his own genre, a classically inspired take on contemporary pop, with recent collaborations including Falling Back with Polish superstar sanah, and new single If I Knew, featuring multi-platinum and Oscar-nominated artist, Sofia Carson.
Rounding out the festival is globally acclaimed singer, songwriter, and multiinstrumentalist Jamie Cullum, known for his unique blend of jazz, pop, and rock. Most famous for his dynamic stage presence and prodigious musical talent, Cullum first came to prominence with his major label breakthrough Twentysomething, whose multi-million sales make it one of the UK’s best-selling albums of all time. Cullum continues to win over audiences worldwide, earning a reputation as one of the most versatile and innovative musicians of his generation.
For those looking to see o the final hours of the festival in style, renowned saxophonist YolanDa Brown will be filling Pure Heaven with beats from her monumental tribute show, the Bob Marley Songbook, in celebration of what would have been the legendary reggae artist’s 80th birthday. The show will take the audience on a journey through Marley’s legacy, exploring the depth of his musicality and the enduring impact of his message on love, peace, and unity through YolanDa’s delicious blend of jazz, reggae and soul.
Henley Festival was set up in 1982 as a charity with a mission to stage an unforgettable music and arts festival for the local community – and this mission remains the same over 40 years later. In 2022, Henley Festival launched charitable initiative RISE to inspire and support emerging talent in the creative arts, providing opportunities to perform, flourish and learn. RISE by Henley Festival champions aspiring professionals in music (who perform on the dedicated RISE
stage), visual art (with artists exhibiting in the High RISE gallery) and production (with backstage students working across the site with the best lighting and sound companies in the industry). RISE gives participants in the programme visibility, financial support and mentoring, and helps them to form connections with industry professionals.
This year, there are outstanding emerging artists including bands that have had millions of streams on social media, a Welsh-Jamaican singer/song writer tipped to be the new face of pop R&B, a Roundhouse resident artist who has performed at Glastonbury, bands with European tour experience, and award winning, emerging musicians. The line-up includes performances from the RISING Star Award winner Hetta Falzon; Welsh R&B singer-song writer Leila McKenzie; Jazz-Pop artist Darcy Winter; Bath-based indie folk singer-songwriter Jonny Morgan; South London-based R&B vocalist Naima Adams; Birmingham three-piece indie rock band The White Lakes; guitarist and vocalist Tony Mac; London-based indie pop band High Windows; and finally closing the stage on the Sunday of the festival, Irish singer-songwriter
Conor McLain, who uses his music to spread positivity and discuss complex topics through a fusion of pop and folk.
Henley Festival will once again be bringing world-class comedians to the Thames riverside, opening on Wednesday night with a performance by acclaimed comedian Ivo Graham, whose stand up has been described by The Evening Standard as ‘confident, exquisitely crafted… and satisfyingly funny’, and previous accolades include nominations for Best Show and Best Joke at the Edinburgh Fringe. On Thursday sell-out comedian and TV favourite Ed Byrne will take to the stage, widely known a regular panellist on Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You, before political comedian and satirist Matt Forde appears on Friday,
whose impressive CV includes lead writer and voice in the revived Spitting Image. On Saturday, Henley Festival will welcome Rob Auton to the Paradiso, known for his whimsical yet profound observations on life, existence and the human experience, before a final, soon-to-be-revealed comedy act rounds o the festival on Sunday.
From fine dining to street food, Henley is the festival for food lovers with a raft of pop-up bars and restaurants adorning the riverside sure to tantalise all taste buds. Proud to support British farming and seasonal, locally sourced produce, ‘Dish’ will return to the stunning Riverside Restaurant this year, o ering festival goers an outstanding fine dining experience of exceptional quality and innovative design, and ‘Caper and Berry’ will return to the Terrace Restaurant.
Henley Festival is also known for bringing visual art to the heart of the festival circuit with innovative installations curated by some of the UK’s most talented artists, photographers and galleries. This year’s unrivalled programme will bring fine art, ceramics, sculptures, photography, prints and paintings to festival-goers, with an array of incredible artworks filling the Festival’s Galleries and Sculpture Garden. An iconic theatre production is coming to Wycombe Swan with a fresh twist
Few plays have captured the American Dream’s allure and devastation as powerfully as Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. This April, a fresh touring production of the Pulitzer Prizewinning masterpiece brings Willy Loman’s tragic odyssey to audiences here at Wycombe Swan, led by esteemed actor David Hayman. With a stellar cast and direction from Andy Arnold, one of Scotland’s most influential theatre figures, this revival promises to be a must-see theatrical event. As audiences brace themselves for an intense exploration of family, ambition, and self-delusion, Miller’s timeless play finds new relevance in an age where economic uncertainty and the pressures
of success weigh heavier than ever.
David Hayman, best known for his roles in The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Dad’s Army, and Trial & Retribution, steps into the role of Willy Loman, a salesman on the brink of emotional and financial collapse. With his belief in personal charm and ambition crumbling, Willy grapples with the harsh realities of a life built on illusion. Hayman, a seasoned performer with a deep connection to socially conscious storytelling,
THIS PLAY IS A TRUE MASTERPIECE: RAW, TIMELESS AND DEEPLY MOVING
brings both gravitas and vulnerability to this iconic role. “This play is a true masterpiece – raw, timeless, and deeply moving,” he says. “I’m thrilled to bring Arthur Miller’s powerful vision to life on stage.”
The production boasts a formidable supporting cast, including Beth Marshall as Linda Loman, Daniel Cahill as Bi , and Michael Wallace as Happy. Each actor embodies Miller’s deeply flawed yet painfully relatable characters, navigating themes of familial love, disappointment, and the relentless pursuit of success.
Benny Young, Gavin Jon Wright, Simon Donaldson, Charlene Boyd, Stewart Ennis, Fay Gui o, Bailey Newsome, and Gillian Massey round out the ensemble, ensuring a richly textured portrayal of Miller’s world.
Under the expert direction of Andy Arnold, known for his groundbreaking work at the Tron Theatre, Death of a Salesman is set to receive a fresh, innovative interpretation. Arnold’s reputation for breathing new life into classic texts makes him the perfect visionary for this project. “Arthur Miller’s exploration of family relationships and shattered dreams is as powerful and relevant today as it was when first performed,” he reflects. “Bringing this production to audiences across the UK is a privilege.”
This new touring production of Death of a Salesman is more than just a revival – it is a poignant reminder of the fragile nature of dreams and the sacrifices we make to chase them. With a powerhouse cast and a visionary creative team, every element of this production is crafted to heighten the emotional weight of Willy Loman’s journey.

A stunning exhibition celebrates The Face magazine's influence on photography and portraiture from the 1980s to the present day
The Face Magazine: Culture Shift is the first major museum exhibition to focus on the iconic portraiture and fashion photography captured for The Face, the cult magazine that shaped the tastes of the nation’s youth. Featuring photographs, magazine covers and spreads and film, the exhibition explores The Face’s monumental influence throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, as well as its continued impact on the publishing landscape and the worlds of fashion and music. Organised thematically and chronologically with a focus on portraiture, the exhibition includes images created by some of the era’s most talented photographers, stylists and models, many of which have never been shown outside of the pages of the magazine. The Face was started by Nick Logan,

formerly editor of New Musical Express (NME) in the 1970s and creator of teen music magazine Smash Hits. Logan spotted a gap in the market for a monthly title aimed at a youth audience interested in a broad range of subjects that weren’t being featured in glossy fashion publications, teen magazines or the music weeklies. In doing so, he invented a new genre of publishing: the style magazine.
A selection of portraits and magazine spreads from The Face’s early years highlights the increasing overlap between music and fashion, with innovative graphic design by Neville Brody, who was the magazine’s art director from 1981 to 1986. The magazine’s power to promote music talent, from unknown faces to turbocharging careers, was on the rise, and photographers were given the space and freedom to create iconic images. While initially
billed as ‘Rock’s Final Frontier’, The Face pushed its influence beyond music, spearheading the influence of stylists in magazine photography, and it was soon proclaiming itself ‘The World’s Best Dressed Magazine’. Ray Petri, one of the most influential stylists of the 1980s, redefined men’s fashion within the pages of The Face. He assembled around him a group of creatives known as the Bu alo group, and worked frequently with photographer Jamie Morgan. Petri and Morgan’s images were radical because of the fashion they featured – which drew inspiration from an eclectic range of references – but also because they created space for black models within the fashion industry. Their first cover together, featuring British-Burmese model Nick Kamen in January 1984, was a key moment in The Face’s history, with fashion, photography
and the discovery of a new face all coalescing to create an image that defined a new zeitgeist. Within two years of appearing on the cover of The Face, Nick Kamen was starring in one of Levi’s best-known advertising campaigns.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Face adopted an aesthetic and style that was in line with the emergence of acid house music, a new clubbing scene and the subsequent explosion of rave culture. Petri and Morgan’s stylised shoots gave way to black and white photographs by Corinne Day, Glen Luchford, Nigel Shafran, David Sims and Juergen Teller, championed by The Face’s then art director, Phil Bicker. Stylists including Melanie Ward, Malcolm Beckford, Adam Howe, Karl Templer and Derick Procope brought a new focus on casual youth style, and featured models who challenged mainstream fashion stereotypes. The images featured unconventional male models and a new generation of women, including Emma Balfour, Rosemary Ferguson,

Sarah Murray and Lorraine Pascale, who were photographed looking natural and authentic, in contrast with the high-fashion glamour that dominated the covers of Vogue. Most famously, Corinne Day showed a photograph of a then unknown model from south London to Bicker, who was immediately struck by the young Kate Moss. Moss’s subsequent covers for the magazine launched her career. This new approach to fashion photography was incredibly transgressive and transformed the genre.
As photography evolved in the 90s, The Face was at the forefront of exploring the creative potential of new image manipulation programs, which resulted in bold, colourful and ‘hyperreal’ images, which pushed fashion photography in a new direction – a return to glamour, but with a contemporary twist. Innovation was spearheaded by the magazine’s new art director, Lee Swillingham (one of the co-curators of this exhibition), who recognised that advances made in digital post-production technology
o ered photographers more creative potential. Digital technologies shifted the photographer’s role from image-taker to image-maker.
Fashion stories from 1994 featured models who were photographed in the studio before the photographs were digitally montaged onto vividly coloured stock slides from image libraries. Throughout the magazine’s history, The Face allowed photographers and stylists a platform to experiment and push fashion and portrait photography in exciting new directions.
The magazine ceased publication in 2004, but 15 years later it relaunched in print and online, returning to a radically altered publishing landscape. Navigating this new terrain, The Face has continued Logan’s original vision for a disruptive, creative and inclusive magazine, championing fresh talent in photography, fashion, music and graphic design, and the exhibition closes with work from this new chapter.

Q Did your cooking journey happen almost by chance when you found work at Don Salvatore?
A I’ve always believed in taking opportunities where you find them, and my journey into cooking started in an unexpected way. At just 13-years-old, I found myself in trouble with the law, and part of my punishment was community service or a job. I needed to prove that I was reliable and trustworthy, so I went door knocking to find a job. I landed a job as KP for 20 hours a week. That was my first Michelin star restaurant – at the age of 13 – and from there I have never looked back. I loved every minute – the screaming,
“I LOVED THE SCREAMING, THE SWEATING, THE BLEEDING”
the sweating and the bleeding. It’s what made the experience so exhilarating and exciting to me.
Q What was it about the kitchen environment that sucked you in?
A The discipline, the focus, the commitment. It’s not a job; it’s a mindset and a way of living.
Q Why did you come to London?
A At 17, I took a leap of faith and bought a one-way ticket to London with nothing but a few chef’s jackets and a couple of changes of clothes. I knew that if I wanted to make it in this city, I had to learn and grow quickly. London was – and still is – home to some of the best chefs in the world, and I wanted to challenge myself in that environment. It just felt like the right place for me to push my limits and build my career. I’ve always loved London and the UK. The energy, the diversity, and the opportunities here are incredible.
Q What was your first job in a London restaurant and how do you look back on it?
A My first job in London was with Gordon Ramsay, and it was by far the most challenging and demanding experience I’ve ever faced. It pushed me to my limits, but it also shaped me into the chef I am today. Looking back, I have a huge amount of respect for the discipline and high standards I learned during that time – it was tough, but invaluable.
Q In the early days of your career, which chefs helped to shape the chef we see today?
A Without a doubt, Gordon Ramsay, Angela Hartnett, Pierre Gagnaire, as well as many others from across the globe. True masters!
Q What would you say have been the highlights of your career?
A The love and appreciation I’ve received from my guests will always be one of the biggest highlights of my career. As someone who came to the UK as a guest, it’s an honour to feel so welcomed and to be part of this incredible community. Knowing that my food resonates with people and brings them joy is what drives me to keep pushing boundaries and creating dishes that are both innovative and exciting.
Q Have there been many low points?
A Closing Amethyst by Carlo Scotto was undoubtedly my lowest point. It was one of
“MY COOKING IS DARING, INNOVATIVE, CREATIVE AND GLOBALLY INSPIRED”
the best restaurants in the UK, and having to close it for reasons beyond my control was tough to accept. However, it has given me valuable time to reflect, grow, and refocus. I’m now more motivated than ever and excited to showcase what BEAR by Carlo Scotto has to o er.
Q Today, do you think it’s possible to define your cooking style?
A Absolutely: daring, innovative, creative and globally inspired.
Q How long has BEAR by Carlo Scotto been in the making?
A After closing Amethyst, I realised that I had some personal work to do. Even people close to me did not understand what I was going through, so I had to take some time away and work on myself. But what brought me back was the love from my guests, asking me for over a year when I would be back with a new restaurant. There is a beauty in setbacks and comebacks that I can’t explain – when I decided to make my return, BEAR by Carlo Scotto was born.
Q Why was Crazy Bear perfect for this new venture?
A I was looking for a place to reopen my chef’s table and was considering a few sites in Central London, but I was not convinced. When [MD] Tom Etridge approached me and shared the vision for the future of the company, I knew it was the perfect fit. The direction he’s taking aligns perfectly with my own ambitions,
and it felt like the right place to bring my vision for BEAR by Carlo Scotto to life.
Q What will you be looking to o er with the menu?
A An incredible experience that redefines fine dining and the farm to table concept. We will foraging our own vegetables and working closely with local farms in order to be part of this lovely community. My menu will hopefully touch the lives of many people.
Q Why a tasting menu?
A You can’t truly understand my mindset through just a few plates of food – it is important you connect with how I feel about my life. My dishes are a reflection of my personality, character, lifestyle, and the journey I’ve been through, both the highs and the lows of my career and life. Above all, my cooking allows me to tell the story of the real artists: the local farmers, artisans, and small producers. Without their dedication to providing worldclass ingredients, we as chefs wouldn’t be able to create world-class dishes.
Q Why will you have an open kitchen on show?
A It will be a chef’s counter, o ering guests an immersive experience. They will see the journey of each ingredient, prepped and cooked right in front of them, allowing guests to see how the ingredients are transformed into something extraordinary.

Clinic, the UK’s leading expert in the treatment of varicose veins and pelvic congestion syndrome
Q Can you tell us a little more about yourself and your clinics?
A I am Professor Mark Whiteley, consultant venous surgeon and executive chairman of The Whiteley Clinic, the UK’s leading vein clinic and an internationally recognised centre of excellence for varicose vein treatments and pelvic congestion syndrome. The Whiteley Clinic is known throughout the vein world for our multi award-winning research and innovative treatment methods, leading to the lowest possible recurrence rates and high long term patient satisfaction. We have seven clinics across the UK in London, Guildford, Henley, Poole, Bristol and recently opened in Manchester and Liverpool.
Q What are varicose veins?
A Varicose veins are abnormally large bulging veins that can be seen pressing out the skin of the legs or vulva/scrotum when standing or sitting. They bulge because of the pressure of the blood inside them. This occurs because the underlying veins have failed valves, reversing the blood flow from the heart and back into the veins. Visible varicose veins in the legs can cause tired, aching, heavy legs and swollen ankles, but can also lead to red or brown stains around the ankles, bleeding, leg ulcers (open sores), or blood clots (DVT).
Q What are hidden varicose veins?
A “Hidden varicose veins” is the name given to the same underlying problem, but without
bulging veins, and therefore they cannot be seen. As such, these patients have the same problems and risks as those who have visible varicose veins, but do not know that they have them because they are not visible on the surface. They might be hidden because they are too deep in the leg, or because they are hidden deep inside the pelvis.
Hidden varicose veins in the legs still cause tired, aching, heavy legs as well as the skin damage, clots and ulcers, but within the pelvis can cause an aching feeling, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder, pain during intercourse, lower back pain, hip pain and haemorrhoids of the vulva or vagina in females or the scrotum in males.
Q What can this lead to?
A One in three (30%) of women attending gynaecology outpatients with chronic pelvic pain have pelvic hidden varicose veins, known as pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) or pelvic venous disorders (PeVD). Unfortunately, these conditions are not recognised by most gynaecologists and these patients are frequently told that they have endometriosis or that there is “nothing wrong with them”.
It is estimated that approximately one million women in the UK are su ering from pelvic pain due to PCS and are not being given the diagnosis by their gynaecologists due to lack of understanding in how to diagnose and treat the condition.
To address this, we have just opened a new women’s health clinic in London’s Bond Street in February. Led by Dr Sophie Strong, a consultant gynaecologist specialising in pelvic pain, it will be the first women’s pelvic pain clinic in the UK to specialise in both PCS and other gynaecological causes of pelvic pain.
Q Can visible or hidden varicose veins be easily treated?
A Although many doctors still think veins are easy, research has shown that there are many di erent patterns of veins disease – many relatively easy to treat for the specialist, but often there are complexities that cause early recurrence if missed.
Venous duplex ultrasound scans at The Whiteley Clinic are performed by a team of dedicated Vascular Scientists/Sonographers, allowing the Whiteley Clinic trained consultants to devise a complete and personalised treatment plan for each patient.
All treatments are walk-in, walk-out and performed under local anaesthetic, reducing the risks of general anaesthetic, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Carpe Diem Beds is expanding The Iconic Collection and releasing new products for the bedroom sanctuary
IIn celebration of this year’s 30th anniversary, Carpe Diem Beds has expanded The Iconic Collection, an innovative series of floating luxury beds first released last May. The brand is adding their best-selling bed model, Sandö, to the collection and releasing a range of new products to help customers turn their bedrooms into sanctuaries. The Iconic Collection debuted with four innovative designs: Kungsö, Hällsö Walnut, Hällsö Upholstery, and Vindö. Known for their innovative style, these beds feature a distinctive centred leg design, creating an ethereal floating effect. With the addition of Sandö Iconic, the collection continues to set new standards for luxury and innovation in the world of sleep.
As Carpe Diem Beds’ most popular continental bed model, Sandö has been thoughtfully reimagined to align with the rest of The Iconic Collection. Its updated design incorporates the centred leg, giving it the ethereal floating appearance while maintaining the ergonomic excellence that has made it a customer favourite.
Sandö Iconic stands out due to its unique combination of three patented spring systems. Like all beds in the collection, Sandö Iconic includes both the Contour Pocket System and Visco Elastic Bottom Layer. The third layer, the X-pocket, is positioned between the top and bottom spring systems, providing exceptional suspension depth that creates an unparalleled sensation of weightlessnes and enhances the sleep experience, offering an ideal balance of support and relaxation.
Carpe Diem Beds offers more than just luxury beds; they provide a variety of bedroom furniture and accessories that inspire customers to create their own bedroom sanctuary. The concept of a 360° view is central to the company’s philosophy, as they believe the bedroom should be the heart of the home – a space where one can truly unwind.
Among the new releases are the Otterö Headboard, Holme Walnut Nightstand, Holme Walnut Top and Cylinder Bed Leg in Walnut, all crafted from walnut, highlighting a commitment to materials that embody beauty, tranquillity, and lasting quality. This aligns with one of the company’s primary sources of design inspiration: nature. The new releases also include Holme Upholstery, Sälö, and Holme Plexi Top. Holme Upholstery is a soft, fabric-padded version of the popular Holme Nightstand. Sälö is an upholstered back panel designed to complement the walnut headboard models Pinnö and Otterö. The Holme Plexi Top is specifically designed for the Holme nightstands. This transparent top adds a modern touch while providing a protective surface.
Each new offering is thoughtfully created to enhance the sleeping experience, reflecting meticulous attention to detail and high-quality materials that cater to diverse tastes and preferences.

Do you wake up fully rested? Take the Jensen Beds sleep test and find out
The first step to better sleep health is understanding what to change. Small tweaks to your daily routine can have a great impact on the quality of your sleep – and your quality of life. Jensen Beds’ sleep experts have developed a test which takes just a few minutes to complete and will help you on your way to waking up fully rested. Simply scan the QR code, left, and put your sleep to the test and take the first step to better sleep health.
For over 75 years, Jensen Beds’ purpose has been to help people improve their sleep. The team developing their beds has expertise in physiology and sleep
science. Innovations such as Jensen Exact Comfort Adjustment, their unique zone system and the Aloy® spring system all contribute to better sleep comfort, limiting the need to wake and change your sleeping position. Because the less disruption you experience during sleep, the more rested you will be in the morning.
1. Write a gratitude journal
Writing is a great way to process your emotions. Write down three things every night before you go to bed and see if it helps you find a sense of calm and security that helps you sleep better. When you let go of negative thoughts, it becomes easier to relax. Lower stress levels contribute to the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, which helps you fall asleep faster and wake up refreshed.
2. Leave your mobile out of the bedroom
Make it a habit to keep your mobile phone in another room while you sleep. This reduces distractions and minimizes the temptation to check your phone if you wake during the night, which can interfere with your ability to fall back asleep quickly. This keeps your sleep environment healthier, free from the blue light emitted by screens, which is known to disrupt circadian rhythms and suppress melatonin production.
3. Sleep in a bed with optimal support for your body
Invest in a bed that is comfortable and gives your whole body good ergonomic support. To give you optimal support, your bed needs to meet the specific requirements of your body. When you are allowed to sleep without pressure, your brain doesn’t have to signal to your body to change position throughout the night. This helps you stay in restorative sleep for longer periods of time.
4. Use a wake-up light as a morning alarm
Traditional alarm clocks wake you very abruptly, which can be a stressful experience. A wake-up light wakes you gradually over 20-30 minutes as the light simulates a natural sunrise. This gentle approach to waking up helps you start the day with more energy and a positive mindset.

BoConcept has announced Helena Christensen as their Global Artistic Director
BoConcept has ushered in a new creative era as it appoints the world-renowned Danish supermodel, photographer and style icon Helena Christensen as Global Artistic Director for the brand.
In her new role, Helena will help to shape an exciting new chapter for the global interiors company, working closely with new design talent, featuring in and producing brand campaigns, and designing and styling pieces that speak to her effortless sense of style and easy elegance.
Helena lends her unique experience and perspective to BoConcept’s ‘Art of Living Danishly’ campaign, bringing to life what it means to live well through inspiring content series, engaging lifestyle pieces across BoConcept’s channels and conversations with fellow Danish creatives addressing what it is to “Live Danish”.
The appointment takes BoConcept’s longstanding practice of collaborating with renowned designers to a new level. Helena says: “This is a dream come true for me. I’ve always loved interiors and this speaks to so many of my passions for design, creativity, and living intentionally.”
Helena says her whole career has been about “what the eye sees and how it makes you feel”. As one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ group of supermodels that dominated catwalks, billboards and magazines in the ’90s, she was part of the fashion and culture explosion of the decade – front and centre of an era that shaped culture as we know it.
Now, she says, “the way I decorate my home is as important as how I dress myself”, and her love of home and deep appreciation for living well keeps her firmly in step with today’s zeitgeist, favouring wellness and self-care, and quality over quantity.
As part of her role, Helena will be designing furniture and developing fabrics for the brand. Interiors have always been a passion, and alongside her modelling and photography, she has worked in the interiors space for two decades. Twenty years ago she launched the concept store Butik in New York City with Leif Sigersen. She is also co-founder, with long-term collaborator Camilla Staerk, of their interior design and lifestyle studio Staerk & Christensen, which creates work across fashion, furniture, photography and film.
Recent design projects include collaborations with New York-based studio Bower on a range of home accessories and creating a special edition of the ‘Runner Chair’ with Danish designer Kasper Salto. The duo has also been working on an ongoing prefab project of three structural houses with Revolution Precrafted, alongside the architect Gulla Jonsdottir.
“This speaks to my passion for design and creativity ”
About her approach, Helena says: “Design is more than the details of aesthetics, it’s about how it makes you feel when you walk through the door,” she says. “When your environment is comforting, beautiful and feels like a true reflection of you, life is better. You’re freer, more productive, more creative and more relaxed and joyful. That matters a lot to me!"
The partnership is also rooted in a shared Danish heritage and cultural experience. Copenhagen-born Helena, who lives in Manhattan and has a beach house on the Danish coast, joins BoConcept at a time when Danish design and the country’s creative and cultural output is globally influential – continuously shifting the dial across fashion, design, food and beyond.
“Being Global Artistic Director at BoConcept is more than just a role to me; it’s a creative journey of unpacking what it means to live well and sharing the beauty and brilliance of Danish design.”
Danish design played a crucial role in the mid-century modern movement, characterised by its clean lines and functional forms. This is still central to the new direction, but the new wave feels more playful and personal. It’s this
“I want to share the beauty and brilliance of Danish design”
marriage of minimalism’s sleek lines and Helena’s maverick ability to be nothing other than herself that makes the partnership so invigorating.
Helena’s first creative endeavour comes with the launch of ‘Flora’, an exclusive set of art prints from her personal photography archive, available to buy in March 2025. The capsule of botanical prints highlights Helena’s love of nature and capturing the beauty of every day. “There’s something so fascinating about looking at a flower, deeply and intensely,” Helena says. “The magic and complexity of nature is almost impossible to believe and understand, but I’m able to capture it, somehow, with my camera.”
A celebrated photographer, Helena’s work has been published extensively in art and design magazines and is frequently showcased in galleries from Europe to the US. Helena was also a founding partner and creative director of the hugely influential Nylon magazine.
She says photography has become “like breathing” to her. “I love the simple
fact that you can capture a moment in time. I see everything in frames. I am constantly searching for moments and always curious about everything that happens in my way.”
In a role in which she combines her passion for photography with humanitarian work, in 2019 Helena was appointed a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, travelling the globe to document the struggles of refugees and displaced people. “This is a role I take very seriously,” she says. “The fact that I get to travel the world and meet people who are refugees or displaced persons and photograph them, talk to them and convey their stories to the rest of the world is the most fulfilling and humbling job I will ever have.”
BoConcept is thrilled to be working with Helena and excited to see the vibrant, unique perspective this global icon will bring to the story of Danish design at BoConcept. Chief Marketing Officer Paula McGuinness says: “We are truly excited to harness
our BoConcept design expertise with Helena’s intrinsic sense of global style and her Danish life philosophy. We look forward to shaping a new agenda together to inspire consumers around the world.”
BoConcept was founded in 1952 in Denmark and today is the world’s most global furniture retailer, with over 300 stores spanning 64 countries. The brand works with award-winning designers to create collections of furniture, accessories and lighting for private homes and business spaces. Under the heading ‘Live Ekstraordinær’, BoConcept is committed to bringing its flexible Interior Design Service and industryleading customisation to spaces both private and public – without compromising on design vision or aesthetics.

Absolutely looks back at 20 years of innovation by Tollgard Design Group, including a recent project in a historic Buckinghamshire mansion
In February 2005, Staffan Tollgård took the first step of a journey that now celebrates twenty years of design.
From the attic of his and Monique’s Brook Green home, Staffan and Grace (their miniature Schnauzer), became the proud founding members of Staffan Tollgard Design Group, a fledgling architectural interior design studio. Two decades later, and quite a lot has changed. Monique left her job in documentary production to join the team; Brook Green became Westbourne Studios, and then Grosvenor Waterside and Chelsea Harbour. Design services are now just one cornerstone of the business, with three showrooms and a contracts department making up a hybrid and holistic offering. With over 350 projects under their belt, Tollgard is celebrating its 20th year as a business, full of energy and enthusiasm for the next decade of design.
Absolutely spoke to Monique about two decades in design, including a trip back in time to working on a simply stunning Buckinghamshire mansion.
Q Congratulations on reaching your 20th anniversary. How does it feel to reach this milestone?
A Birthdays that end in zeros and fives have a huge psychological impact. They seem somehow to mark the end of a chapter, and the start of a new one. Reaching 20 years in the design industry has provoked all sorts of emotions. Gratitude – mainly – to our colleagues, clients and collaborators who have made this journey such a pleasure. Surprise as well that we’ve managed to keep the plates spinning in the air for so long! Excitement about the next chapter, and how we might do things differently. Optimism that we still enjoy working together as much as we do.
Q What initially inspired you to launch the business back in 2005 and was it challenging or relatively straight-forward?
A Our journey into interior design is an evolution of our backgrounds in storytelling, film, and documentary-making. The fact that we met during a shared production (a feature-film, an age ago) gave us the
confidence that we would be able to run a company together. Staffan set off into the industry first, retraining at the Inchbald School of Design, before working for the talented designer Rabih Hage. He is a serial entrepreneur, however, and realised quickly that he wanted to run his own business. I joined a couple of years later when I saw that the business could be a safe basket for all our eggs. It was not straight-forward: we have weathered all sorts of storms including financial downturns, Brexit, Covid and two teenage sons. Facing the challenges together, however, has added a unique layer to our married life, and a mutual respect that we are incredibly grateful for.
Q What were your ambitions back then for the business?
A We had a very simple strategy: don’t go bankrupt. We have never taken outside investment, and have always put our profit back into the business to explore new avenues and opportunities. At the outset we were focused on offering architectural interior design services to international clients, with a focus primarily on residential projects. We aimed to create homes that reflected the unique identities of our clients while building a reputation for thoughtful, story-driven design. Over time, as our experience and expertise has grown, so has our ambition. We now have three showrooms, a growing reputation for our product design studio, and a contract sales team.
Q How would you say the business has evolved over two decades?
A Interestingly, I would say that we say no far more often now than we used to. We are still optimistic and enthusiastic about every project that we consider, but we are a lot more aware of where our superpowers lie. We know what we don’t know now. In the early days we sometimes said ‘Yes, what’s the question?’
Q Do you feel there is a Tollgard style, or is each project completely different?
A We like to think that we don’t have a house style, but a set of strongly-held house values. We also keep our ears open, and our egos in check. This means every project has the same robust and thoughtful approach, but ultimately is unique because the client’s questions of living demand personal solutions.
The Scandinavian notion of the “red thread” still serves as a guiding principle in every project. The red thread represents the creative design DNA that makes each project unique – a unifying concept that ties together every element of the design. We discover this thread by pulling clues from the architecture, cultural history, environment, and, most importantly, the client’s personality and lifestyle needs. It acts as a protective framework, ensuring that the design aligns seamlessly with the client’s identity and the practical questions of living that the space must address. By linking architecture with interiors and client aspirations with design execution, the red thread ensures our projects are cohesive, personal, and deeply meaningful.
Q You have worked predominantly in London, but have come out to the Home Counties too, such as with your ‘Buckinghamshire Mansion Revisited’, which is truly stunning. What was the original brief for the project?
A The project in Buckinghamshire reflects the evolution of a family and its changing
needs. The family have lived in the house for 30 years, and this most recent refurbishment answers new questions. Fewer dinner parties, more movie nights; less corporate entertaining, more space to work from home.
Q How did you look to update the design for 21st century living?
A This was not so much a refurbishment, as a refresh, focusing on the use of the principal rooms and the updating of the kitchen and laundry areas. All the soft furnishings were redone, but nothing structural was touched, which made our work easier. The principal reception room was originally quite formal, with fairly classic pieces of furniture. We introduced a games / cards / puzzle table at the back of the room that can also be used for a smaller supper. The rest of the room is a huge L-shape sofa set up, which works as well for two people watching TV, as for a New Year’s Eve gathering. The Molteni bar on one side of the fireplace balances the introduction of the TV on the other and creates a piece of functional sculpture. The clients have a huge collection of art
The red thread represents the creative DNA that makes each project unique
and antiquities, with a focus on Chinese art, so it made sense to lean into this and choose fabrics that continue this story.
Q How did the building’s architecture inspire you?
A The building’s architecture was an endless source of inspiration throughout the project. Originally designed by John Campbell in 1938, the house embodies the timeless principles of the Arts and Crafts movement – craftsmanship, balance, and a deep connection to its environment.
Q How did you work with Sola?
A We partnered with Swedish kitchen atelier Sola to redesign the working rooms with light Shaker-style cabinetry, hand-painted in soft grey (Little Greene’s Dark Lead 118) and accented with solid ash ribbing. Durable Caesarstone worktops added both beauty and functionality, creating spaces that balance practicality with timeless elegance.
Q What elements do you really love?
A The loggia has really come alive in this next chapter. The view from beyond the room is really the star of the show, and at night this meant the room was a little underwhelming. By adding a beautiful rug from Riviere, and hanging three of the larger paintings from the client’s collections on the wall, we managed to balance the composition of the room and create inspiring internal views.

An expert at HollandGreen on the challenges faced in creating this home known as The Hide
Transforming a dilapidated bungalow into a stunning contemporary home within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) came with its fair share of challenges. The resulting property, now known as The Hide, beautifully marries the demands of sensitive site constraints with a modern design that embraces its surroundings. In this feature, James Hurst, Associate Director of Architecture at HollandGreen, explores the obstacles faced and the innovative solutions that guided this ambitious project from concept to completion.
One of the first significant challenges was the steep gradient of the site. The natural contours of the land could easily have been seen as a limitation, but the design team chose to embrace them. The solution? An “upside-down” house, with the main living areas on the first floor taking full advantage of the spectacular views across the surrounding countryside. This allowed the architects to incorporate double-height and vaulted ceiling spaces, creating an airy, open environment that feels expansive and light-filled.
The lower level of the home, where the bedrooms are located, benefits from floor-to-ceiling glazing, allowing natural light to flood the space. Large windows on this level also create a seamless connection to the landscaped gardens, making the lower floor feel just as inviting and connected to nature as the upper level.
The Hide is located within an AONB, which made respecting the landscape and its historical context even more crucial.
The design process had to be carefully managed to ensure that it would sit gently within the surrounding countryside without overpowering it. The challenge was to create a contemporary home while respecting the established local character and architectural heritage.
The location of The Hide, situated near a Grade II listed barn, posed additional challenges. A key consideration was that the new house could not exceed the height of the original bungalow, ensuring it would not interfere with sightlines or detract from the barn’s visual prominence.
Given the site’s sensitive location and surrounding context, the decision to maintain the original footprint and roofline was crucial. Not only did this respect the architectural and environmental significance of the site, but it also ensured
that the design would be more likely to gain approval from both the council and local planning authorities. While this approach posed its own challenges, it allowed the design team to work within the constraints while still achieving a bold and modern vision.
The decision to use locally sourced materials and focus on sustainable building practices was integral to the design of The Hide. The building materials were chosen to complement the local vernacular while also providing a contemporary twist. The use of Corten steel, charred timber, and Crittall-style glass was carefully considered to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the home. These materials create a striking contrast against the
natural surroundings, while still remaining sympathetic to the area’s character.
The team also paid close attention to sustainability. While the home doesn’t fully meet carbon-neutral standards, it does incorporate high energy efficiency measures. The use of a gas-fired boiler, wood-burning stoves, and airtight construction ensured that the home was comfortable, with excellent energy performance. The sustainable building materials were chosen to support these energy efficiency goals, reducing the environmental impact while enhancing the overall design.
Balancing privacy with openness was another key challenge in the design of The Hide. The south-facing elevation, which faces the road and public footpaths, was designed to ensure privacy. Waist-height windows provide just enough daylight and ventilation while maintaining seclusion from the street. On the opposite side, the north-facing elevation is more open, with large expanses of glazing offering uninterrupted views of the fields and providing a stronger connection to nature.
A striking design feature of The Hide is the exposed Glulam roof structure. The tie beams and bolts were deliberately left exposed to create a more slender, open space. This architectural choice not only
adds to the design’s aesthetic, but also enhances the sense of height and openness, giving the interiors a light, airy feel.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of working on The Hide was the exceptional collaboration between the architects, clients, and contractors. The team’s collective commitment to the project made the entire process a positive and fulfilling experience. From navigating the challenges of planning to realising the client’s vision, The Hide stands as a testament to what can be achieved when creativity, expertise, and teamwork come together. The result is a contemporary home that feels at one with its environment, offering both privacy and openness, while embracing modern design within a historic and natural context.

Absolutely heads inside a magnificent property in a prime residential location
Caversham Grange is an impressive detached property built in 2016 to a high specification and in the style of an Edwardian riverside house. It comprises over 7,000 sq feet of accommodation, arranged over four floors, which is flexible, light and airy and beautifully presented throughout.
The lovely drawing room has wood flooring, built-in display shelving and a large bay window. The magnificent kitchen/breakfast/family room is very much the heart of the home and is fitted with a range of painted floor and wall units around a central island. Integrated WOLF/Sub Zero appliances include a range cooker with extractor above, microwave oven, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. It has stone flooring, an open plan family area with TV with seating area.
The extensive basement area provides additional accommodation including a cinema room, gym, workshop and utility room as well as excellent storage.
From the hallway a superb staircase sweeps to the first floor and the principal bedroom suite comprising bedroom dressing room and en-suite bathroom, and access to the south facing balcony overlooking the river.
The guest bedroom also has a dressing room, en-suite shower room and access to the balcony. The third bedroom on this floor has built-in wardrobes and en-suite shower room as well as a door opening to the balcony. To the second floor there are four further bedrooms, all en-suite and all with built-in wardrobes.
Throughout the house is Control4 automation, a hardwired fire alarm system and SSAIB approved intruder alarm system.
Caversham Grange is approached from The Warren via wrought iron remote control gates with entry phone system. The gravelled driveway provides plenty of parking to the front of the house and garage block, which provides double and single parking with a loft store above.
At the river the original Edwardian boathouse has a wet dock enclosed by gates and store to the rear. Steps lead up to the living accommodation which comprises a living room, kitchen and store room and doors opening to a large south facing balcony with stunning panoramic views over the River Thames and the water meadows beyond. In all the gardens extend to about 0.73 acres and there is approximately 100ft of River Thames mooring.
To discover more, Absolutely spoke to Stephen Christie-Miller, director, residential sales, at Savills Henley-on-Thames.
Q Are riverside properties like this quite rare to come on to the market?
A Only a handful of Thameside properties come to the market every year in this area – so to have a house of this quality in such a prime location is very rare indeed. Such properties are often in high demand, especially when in turnkey condition. A prospective buyer would have very little – if any – decorating or renovation work. It’s a home you can enjoy as soon as you step through the front door.
To have a house of this quality in such a prime location is rare
Q What can you tell us about the location?
A The Warren is a prestigious residential road offering plenty of privacy. It’s a magnificent spot on a tranquil stretch of river – ideal for those who want somewhere to relax and unwind. It definitely has a lot of ‘wow’ factor. Caversham itself is a lovely village with plenty of character, while Reading is very close for those who need regular rail services into London.
Q What kind of places are nearby?
A Caversham has an excellent range of local amenities including shops, cafes and restaurants. It’s also extremely convenient for the centre of Reading, where there are rail connections to London Paddington and into the City via the Elizabeth Line. The nearby towns of Henley, Maidenhead and Windsor provide an alternative range of shopping, leisure and recreational facilities, while the area is also well served for schools, including The Oratory, Bluecoat, Reading, Kendrick, The Abbey and Queen Anne’s. The end of The Warren also has access to the Mapledurham Estate with lots of lovely walks.
Q Heading into the property, what is the first thing that catches your eye?
A The staircase in the entrance hall is very striking – leading up to the principal bedroom suite on the first floor.
Q How would you describe the interior design?
A The house was only built in 2016 so it’s very modern and has been finished to a very high specification. The rooms are light, airy and beautifully presented. The drawing room with its wood flooring, builtin display shelving and large bay window is a prime example.
Q Externally, is there plenty to excite would-be buyers?
A The outside space is second to none. There’s a wonderful covered terrace that provides the perfect place to enjoy views over the gardens, while an open sided dining area with slate roof sits alongside an outdoor kitchen, which is ideal for alfresco entertaining. The lawns sweep down to the water’s edge and high hedges provide plenty of privacy. The original Edwardian boathouse – now used for additional living accommodation – has a wet dock and approximately 100ft of mooring.
Q Do you personally have a favourite part of the home?
A The kitchen/breakfast/family room is very special and very much at the heart of the house. It’s fitted with a range of painted floor and wall units arranged around a central island, as well as integrated WOLF/ Sub Zero appliances including a range
cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher – all with the added benefit of amazing views over the garden down to the boathouse and river.
Q Who would the property suit?

WE HEAD TO RIPPLES NEWBURY TO DISCOVER WHAT IS TRENDING RIGHT NOW IN BATHROOMS
As we step into 2025, a wave of change is sweeping through bathroom design. Senior Designer from Ripples Newbury, Leanne Robey, looks at what’s on its way out and the fresh ideas taking their place.
For years, chrome brassware was the go-to choice in bathrooms, offering a sleek and classic look. However, this staple is losing its charm as homeowners and designers alike are gravitating towards special finishes, particularly PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coatings. These finishes not only provide a broader range of colours and textures, but also boast superior durability.
Matt black brassware made a bold state-
ment when it burst onto the scene. Yet, its practical shortcomings are leading to its decline. In hard water areas, keeping matt black clean can be a challenge, and it’s particularly susceptible to scratching and tarnishing. For those still drawn to the look, incorporating smaller accents like robe hooks or toothbrush holders can offer a touch of elegance without the maintenance headache.
Polished, high-gloss tiles that once dominated bathroom walls and floors are being replaced by natural, textured finishes. These alternatives bring a sense of warmth and authenticity to the space, creating a more inviting atmosphere. While textured finishes are a welcome shift, it’s worth con-
sidering their longevity. For example, terracotta has been a popular choice recently, but may not retain its appeal over time.
Spotlights in niches, once seen as the epitome of modern design, are losing their shine. Replacing them is the rise of LED strip lighting, which offers a sleeker, more seamless finish. These lights provide adjustable colour temperatures, allowing homeowners to create a personalised ambiance. The result is a bathroom that feels more dynamic and adaptable to varying moods and occasions.

National O er Day is a significant milestone in the UK education system, marking the day when parents and guardians are informed of the school placement allocated to their child. Here, Absolutely explores the purpose of National O er Day, the processes involved, and how it can help parents in making informed decisions about their child's education.
National O er Day refers to the date when local authorities notify parents of the school their child has been allocated for the upcoming academic year. The dates vary depending on the school level. Primary school allocations (Reception year) are announced on 16th April. Secondary school allocations (Year 7) are announced on 3rd March.
On these dates, parents receive confirmation via email or letter from their local council regarding which school their child has been o ered. This process ensures that every child in the country has a school place for the next academic year.
Understanding how the admissions process works is crucial for parents to navigate National O er Day e ectively. The process typically follows these steps:
1. RESEARCHING SCHOOLS
Parents are encouraged to research potential schools well in advance. Key factors to consider include: Ofsted ratings – inspections provide insights into school performance; School performance data – exam results and progress scores; Proximity – distance from home may impact admissions; School ethos and values – ensuring alignment with parental preferences; Special educational needs (SEN) provision –availability of support if required.
2.
Applications are submitted through the local council’s admissions portal. The deadline for submissions was late 2024 for secondary school places, and the start of this year for primary school places.
Parents can list multiple preferences, usually up to six schools, ranked in order of preference.
3. ADMISSIONS CRITERIA AND ALLOCATION
Schools use specific admissions criteria to allocate places. Common factors include: Catchment area – proximity to the school; Siblings – priority for children with siblings already attending; Faithbased criteria – relevant for faith schools; Academic selection – for grammar and selective schools; Special circumstances – looked-after children and those with additional needs may receive priority. Local authorities process applications and allocate places based on these criteria.
4. NATIONAL OFFER DAY NOTIFICATION
On National O er Day, parents receive a formal o er confirming their child’s school placement. If the preferred school is not allocated, the letter may also include details on waiting lists and the appeals process.
While National O er Day may be stressful, it serves several important functions that help parents make informed choices about their child’s education.
1. CLARITY ON SCHOOL PLACEMENT
National O er Day provides parents with a clear outcome on their child’s school placement, enabling them to prepare for the transition ahead.
2. TIME TO MAKE DECISIONS
If parents are unhappy with the allocation, they have time to consider their options, such as accepting the o er and preparing for their child’s start, joining a waiting list for a preferred school, or lodging an appeal if they believe the admissions decision was unfair.
3. UNDERSTANDING THE APPEALS PROCESS
Parents have the right to appeal the decision if they believe an error was made in the admissions process. Appeals must be submitted within a specific timeframe, and while success rates vary, it provides an avenue for parents to challenge the allocation.
4. EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS
If an appeal is unsuccessful, parents can explore alternative schooling options such as applying for other schools with available places, or exploring home education as an option.
WHILE IT CAN BE A STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE, PREPARING FOR DIFFERENT OUTCOMES CAN MAKE THE TRANSITION SMOOTHER
5. BETTER PREPARATION FOR FUTURE ADMISSIONS
For parents with younger children, National O er Day provides valuable insight into the admissions process, helping them make better-informed choices in the future.
TIPS FOR PARENTS NAVIGATING NATIONAL OFFER DAY
1. RESEARCH AND APPLY STRATEGICALLY
Choose a mix of aspirational, realistic, and safe options. Consider schools within the catchment area. Attend open days and gather as much information as possible.
2. REMAIN CALM AND FLEXIBLE
If the preferred school isn’t allocated, remember that children often thrive in di erent environments. Keep an open mind about the allocated school.
3. UNDERSTAND THE APPEALS PROCESS
Gather strong evidence if appealing a decision. Meet deadlines for submitting an appeal.
4. ENGAGE WITH THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Connect with other parents for insights and support. Arrange a visit to the allocated school to assess its suitability.
National O er Day is a crucial event in the UK education system. While it can be a stressful experience, understanding the admissions process, preparing for di erent outcomes, and knowing the options available can make the transition smoother. By researching schools thoroughly, making strategic applications, and being prepared for any outcome, parents can ensure their child receives a quality education that meets their needs and aspirations.
Confused after National O er Day? Here, St George’s School Windsor Castle help you to consider your next steps
If on National O er Day you have not been allocated the secondary school place of your choice, you may well be considering your options. For those who have not experienced an independent education themselves, including private schools among the possible next steps can sometimes seem a daunting task. However, by demystifying some of the sector’s unfamiliar terminology, the wide-
ranging benefits of smaller class sizes, less constrained curricula and more extensive facilities hopefully become more accessible.
PRIVATE OR INDEPENDENT: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
On average people in the UK are five times more likely to search for ‘private schools near me’ than ‘independent schools near me’, yet most schools in the sector refer to themselves as independent. Why is this?
Technically, the term private school usually refers to a school which is run by its owner, while independent schools normally have a board of governors. However, this aside, the terms are essentially interchangeable.
WHAT IS A ‘PREP SCHOOL’?
Prep stands for ‘preparatory’, traditionally indicating the years spent preparing a child for their senior school. These days, rather than simply a means to an end, a prep school education is a uniquely
valuable experience in its own right. Spanning the school years up to the end of Year 8 (or for some, Year 6), a good prep school allows children to uncover their strengths and passions while also nurturing their individual character. Perhaps confusingly, the word ‘prep’ is also used synonymously with homework, but for exactly the same reason – again short for ‘preparatory’, this is the work completed outside of the typical school day to prepare for the next lesson.
While this varies from school to school, open events, sometimes referred to as open mornings or open days, typically involve a tour of the school, usually led by students, sta or occasionally self-directed, as well as an opportunity to meet the head and other members of school sta . At St George’s, our student tour guides o er a completely unfiltered view of the school, meaning prospective families get an authentic glimpse into school life.
While anyone considering a school will usually be very welcome at an ‘open’ day, it is worth noting that most schools require attendees to register in advance of the event. A school’s website is the usual route to sign up.
After attending an open day, the school’s Registrar or admissions team will happily walk you through the rest!

Absolutely discovers why now is an exciting time at The Abbey Junior and Senior Schools
The Abbey Junior and Senior Schools are entering an exciting new chapter under the leadership of Dr Sarah Tullis, Head of The Abbey School from September 2025, and Beccy Newton, Head of The Abbey Junior School from April 2025. Both Heads bring a wealth of experience, a passion for education, and a shared commitment to fostering a school community that places curiosity, confidence, and joy at the heart of learning.
“We’re a high-achieving, excellent academic school, but it’s not just the results that count, it’s the way we get those results,” says Dr Tullis. “Curiosity, fun, and happiness are embedded in everything we do.” Beccy Newton shares this philosophy, adding: “I want every child to adore learning, to be inspired by an exceptional curriculum that encourages them to challenge ideas, explore freely, and develop independence.”
Both leaders are passionate about ensuring The Abbey remains a place where students flourish in a forward-thinking and supportive environment. “The Abbey provides girls with autonomy, choice, and the skills they need to thrive in an evolving world,” Dr Tullis explains.
Beccy agrees: “We empower our students with the resilience, adaptability, and confidence to embrace whatever the future holds.”
With a focus on innovation, community, and student-led education, The Abbey is set to continue its legacy as a school that not only delivers outstanding academic outcomes, but nurtures young women to be ready for the world beyond.

National Trust, Rubies and Magic Breakfast join forces with World Book Day to champion reading for fun in 2025
On 6th March, World Book Day is back across the UK and Ireland. World Book Day’s evidence shows that children are more likely to read if they enjoy it, so this year the charity will encourage them to ‘Read Their Way’ and celebrate children’s choices.
World Book Day is partnering with a number of exciting brands and organisations, including the National Trust, Magic Breakfast, Rubies and McDonald’s, to get its vital message about the fun of reading to as many children and families as possible. With levels of reading enjoyment currently at an all-time low, it’s more important than ever to get young people excited about reading for fun, unlocking the proven benefits it brings, including better wellbeing and improved learning across the school curriculum.
One in 10 children aged 5-18 do not have a single book of their own at home, and World Book Day’s £1 books are often the first book many children will own: in 2024, one in four children receiving Free School Meals said
their £1 book was the first they had ever owned. Fifteen new books will be available in the UK and Ireland for children to choose for free, in exchange for their £1 book token.
Cassie Chadderton, World Book Day CEO, says: “At the heart of World Book Day is the belief – backed by evidence – that children are more likely to read if they enjoy it and have a choice in what and how to read. Graphic novels, comics, or one of our amazing £1 books – free in exchange for a World Book Day book token – can help unlock the power of reading. We’re excited to be working with so many partners to reach even more children and families, and to invite everyone to join the party and ‘Read Their Way’ this World Book Day.”
Supported by long-term sponsor, National Book Tokens, and working alongside publishers and booksellers, the charity World Book Day will build on its work to improve access to books and encouraging everyone to give children the choice – and a chance – to enjoy reading. The World Book Day £1 books will be available until 23rd March at more than 400 independent bookshops and 4,000 major retailers.
HERE’S A TASTER OF WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT IN THE WORLD BOOK DAY 2025 PROGRAMME
• Rubies, the renowned global costume manufacturer, will be the official dress up partner for World Book Day 2025. As part of an All Dressed Up donation scheme, Rubies, in partnership with Parentkind, will donate up to 100,000 costumes to children in deprived areas.
• National Trust are joining the fun for the first time, with a range of World Book Day celebrations taking place at up to 80 places across the UK.
• McDonald’s will continue to support World Book Day and help provide access to books, with the World Book Day £1 token available on Happy Meals®.
• Over 400 independent bookshops across the UK alongside Waterstones, WHSmith and The Works will help bring the selection of £1 books to local communities.

A recent oracy workshop at Berkhamsted School saw Year 12 students take the lead in teaching Year 6 pupils about the power of their voice.
In October 2024, the Oracy Commission called for oracy to become the ‘fourth R’ of education’s fundamentals alongside reading, writing and arithmetic. The report campaigned for young people to be “equipped to ask questions, to articulate ideas, to formulate powerful arguments” – in short, to empower them to communicate in our modern world.
For Berkhamsted School, a family of independent schools in Hertfordshire, oracy is top of the agenda. At Heatherton School, Berkhamsted’s satellite Prep in Amersham, the November 2024 ISI Report identified pupils’ communication and articulation of ideas as an “area of significant strength”, highlighting how quickly an oracy focus has been implemented into the curriculum. But while Berkhamsted continues to lead the way with oracy, leaders are constantly driven to rethink their strategies for teaching and learning, thinking outside the box in order to achieve the greatest impact. berkhamsted.com
Students at St George’s School Windsor Castle took to the stage in Windsor’s much-loved community arts centre The Old Court for their highly acclaimed recent school productions.
Performing musical interpretations of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the Year 5 children brought their characters to life with real enthusiasm and aplomb.
The school’s Head, Emma Károlyi, commented: “It was a spectacular showcase of so much talent, from singing, to acting, to precision comic timing! A huge well done to all the children, the staff involved and to our Head of Drama.”
In addition to performing on the night, the students were able to inspire their Year 4 counterparts through an earlier dress rehearsal. “I would give it an official rating of a million out of ten,” one declared! stgwindsor.org
Local independent boarding and day school for girls, Downe House, highlighted the growing appeal of degree apprenticeships ahead of National Apprenticeship Week 2025 in February, in line with the numbers of young people across the UK who are rethinking their future educational options. Sarah Barnard, Director of Futures at Downe House School, explains: “For many young people today, degree apprenticeships offer the perfect synthesis of qualifications alongside exposure to the workplace, which can be very appealing in a world facing unprecedented skills
shortages and where emerging leaders are dwindling across many sectors.”
Degree apprenticeships offer young people the chance to study for a full undergraduate or master’s degree while simultaneously working and gaining valuable industry experience. downehouse.net
