Absolutely Weddings WELCOME

Editor’s

LETTER A new bridal season – and we're celebrating with a very special issue full of ideas to inspire your own dream wedding planning...

F

ashion is always close to our hearts at Absolutely Weddings and it's a pleasure to celebrate the best home-team talent in our Great British Style shoot (page 16), created exclusively for us by a brilliant team, including stylist Antonia Kraskowski and photographer Roberto Aguilar. We were so excited to shoot this on location at the most stunning new wedding venue, Holmewood Hall in Cambridgeshire. It is a truly magical place that is sure to be a star in the Country House Weddings collection. The right location is the backbone of every perfect wedding and our Best 100 Venues 2020 is the place to find 'the one'. Created by our brilliant new colleague and venues 'guru' Isabella Eckett, it's a hand-picked edit of the very finest (from page 79). We will be out and about this spring at shows and events, but the one we're most looking forward to is The Bridal Beauty Festival. Taking place at the Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane on Sunday 15th March, it brings together beauty legends – so the place to be pampered and find your bridal look. We're delighted that Festival Co-founder Sophie Cullen is guest editor of our Beauty pages (page 55). All that, plus fine jewels, fashion for the whole wedding party, top spots for a dream honeymoon and gorgeous real weddings to give you ideas (and contacts) for your own celebration. Happy planning!

Northbrook Park was Sian and Daniel's special place, and this classic 18th-century manor set in 120 acres near Farnham in Surrey shone bright in the summer sunshine. Dating back to 1700, Iscoyd Park on the North Wales border is still a family home, so weddings here are always personal. This was just what Lee and Sarah wanted for their lovely wedding, where a few traditions were remade and their pooch was a VIP guest. Located near Haverhill, Sturmer Hall is mentioned in the Domesday Book and its period rooms and wooded grounds make a great backdrop for a timeless country wedding. Tom and Amy made the manor home for their July celebration, pausing for a Mr & Mrs kiss on its stone steps, cheered on by their six beautiful bridesmaids. sturmerhall.com & benbull.net 4 LOUISE & ROSS Photo: Ben Bull

Louise and Ross celebrated their wedding at Hanbury Manor, near Ware on an unseasonably tropical day at the end of June, taking time away from their guests in the early evening, as the mercury dropped, for a cooling lakeside stroll in its immaculately landscaped grounds. marriott.co.uk & benbull.net

Every lord and lady of the manor need discreet attendants. So it was handy that Lottie and Luke had a devoted young page boy in their wake to carry Lottie's veil for their relaxed post-wedding stroll around the lovely walled gardens at north Norfolk's Holkham Hall. Emily and Luke picked the lovely Staffordshire estate Alrewas Hayes for their romantic New Year's Eve wedding. This stately property dating back to 1066 boasts a gorgeous orangery and private lake, not to mention 100-acre grounds where the couple took a newlywed stroll after the formalities. alrewashayes.com & garethnewsteadphotography.com

Down Hall is an ancient manor near Hatfield Heath remodelled in the grand Italian style in the 19th century. It has just completed another refurb – also earning a top award for its wedding spaces. Lush 110-acre grounds made this the perfect manor for the early summer celebration of Richard and Grace. downhall.co.uk & mattheathphotography.com

BOHO FORMAL

Valencia designer Isabel Sanchis is known for architectural lines and this gown is the ultimate style statement for a destination bride. With a halter-effect neckline and angled off-the-shoulder cut, it has a dramatic cape-effect sleeve. isabelsanchis.com

Ballgowns are big news in 2020 and Yolancris gave us one of our favourites for bold and modern style. It combines a fitted v-neck bodice with a tiered and feathered full skirt – perfect dramatic elements for the bride who wants to take centre stage. yolancris.com

Combining fine graphic lace and formal structure, this gown is perfect for a modern-boho bride. We love the plunge front, elegant long sleeves and lace panel to define the waist. There’s a low back and flowing chiffon overskirt. marylisebridal.com

FLORAL TWIST

FROSTED BRIDE

PUFF BALL

We’re big fans of Beba’s alternative approach to wedding-day dressing and this is a classic example. The slimline gown with low back is paired with a translucent floral layer in a delectable café crème shade. This is attached at the shoulders, creating soft cap sleeves with a floaty floral train. bebascloset.com

Metallics are one of the strongest trends in bridal and this shimmering silver gown from The Atelier Couture makes a flattering alternative to white. Featuring an unusual halter-effect neckline and plunge front, it has a diamond pattern with frill hem on the full skirt. theateliercouture.com

Finding the perfect short number to make a bridal entrance is never easy, but this mini has glamour to spare. It features oversized puffed sleeves tapering to tie cuffs and, while the silhouette is strong, double-layered silk keeps the effect light and romantic. sophieetvoila.com

e're going full circle, with spots and spheres appearing on wedding gowns and accessories in 2020. This can be a fun flourish – there's something deliciously jaunty about dots – while some designers have used larger motifs to add a cosmic quality to designs. If a gown seems too way out, go for rounded accessories and jewels – pearls and diamonds are bridal classics, and this year you'll also be on point.

he passion for all things feathered just gets bigger. For the season to come designers have had a collective flight of fancy, giving us glamorous gowns that are embellished, top dressed or trimmed. he natural world is never far from wedding settings. But right now bridal fashion is a garden of delights, with blowsy flowerheads, glistening blossom and winsome trails of foliage. The trend is also sweeping through jewels and accessories. Flowers are firmly in the mix, but also fauna rendered gloriously in metal and precious stones. So say it with flowers and pay homage to the birds and bees – after all, nature's power deserves star billing on this of all days.

Do you stick with the trusted fragrance you’ve worn for the last ten years on your wedding day or try something new and exciting? First up, look at your scents at home – is there a unifying thread? Perhaps they’re all citrusy colognes or rich and spicy, or maybe you’ve got half a dozen versions of rose. Condense your perfume style into three key words. For instance, pink, pretty and floral or modern, clean and fresh. If you are going shopping for your

estination weddings are always a glamorous option, but Jessica and James struck gold with their stunning wedding at Cap Rocat, an ancient fortress overlooking the bay at Palma de Mallorca that is now a unique boutique hotel. There was lots of significance in the decision to choose Spain and the island of Mallorca. "We chose to travel back to Spain for the wedding – it's where the engagement began," says Jessica. Mallorca was the next logical step – for its beauty, great weather, endless wine and breathtaking sunsets. But there was extra significance for the couple. "It was the destination of our first holiday as a couple and James’s family had been visiting the island since he was a child." While choosing the island as their location was easy, narrowing down to

the right venue in a place with so many beautiful options took time. Jessica says: "We did lots of research! I think we saw every wedding venue and hotel on the Island". But then they happened upon the one. "As soon as we drove up to the entrance drawbridge at Cap Rocat we knew it had to be the venue. It's one of the most impressive places we’ve ever been." Formerly a military fortress, the luxury hotel and spa on the quietest part of the island overlooks a marine reserve. It offers wonderful suites sunk into the rockface, fabulous food and superb views – as well as swimming and snorkelling heaven. "Every viewpoint is breathtaking and the atmosphere from the minute you arrive is warm and peaceful," says Jessica. "A big part of our decision was the Cap Rocat team," she says. "The incredible staff arrange large-scale events and weddings with impeccable precision and take care of everything, so we knew we’d be in good

hands – especially as we don’t speak Spanish and planned everything remotely." With such an awe-inspiring backdrop, there was very little extra styling required. "Our style was to keep all details clean and simple as the venue’s location and architecture made such a special backdrop. We wanted evening glamour, with a holiday spirit and classic wedding details," says Jessica. With that in mind, the couple went for Hollywood-style elegance for their outfits. Jessica chose a simple and beautifully cut gown with square neckline and low buttoned back from London designer Louise Selby, while James wore a bespoke white tux. His groomsmen were all in black tie, while bridesmaids wore soft blush pink. The mellow fortress walls and brilliant Mallorcan sunshine were pretty much all the scene-setting you could ever want, so the couple chose pure white flowers with green foliage for the bouquets. "A simple white aisle carpet shaped the ceremony space in the courtyard where our cerement stood at the end with a gold ceremony book in front of tall glass chapel doors," says Jessica. The ceremony

was conducted by their close friend to make it feel even more signifi cant. When it came to traditions, Jessica and James wanted to honour one in particular. "We decided our favourite wedding tradition is the post≠ ceremony speech, so we made this part of the evening." With everyone getting in on the act ñ from bride and bride's sister to groomsmen and uncles ñ this became a real highlight. "Our MC went around the room and handed over the mic! This made the dinner so memorable and entertaining." Their band, Who Killed the DJ, were also stars of the celebration ñ they made the couple's day with the aisle walk, covering some of their favourite songs on a solo violin, and both the ceremony and reception felt very special with this musical accompaniment. Jessica and James' advice to other couples is to try and get an early night before the wedding day ñ even if you are at a glamorous destination venue with all

your guests. "And doní t drink too much the night before the wedding ñ however excited you are to celebrate. We defi nitely made this mistake!" says Jessica. She believes couples should also avoid getting too hung up on detail on the day itself. "Of course, we wanted everything to be perfect, but in reality guests doní t notice and you will be busy having the best day of your lives." In a beautiful day of feasting, music and weather, there were many great moments, but two stand out. "One of our close friends gave us a great tip for the wedding day, which was to take a moment out, stand together as a couple and watch your wedding carry on," says Jessica. "We will never forget that moment of feeling completely content with happiness and watching our friends and family all having the best time dancing to the live music and soaking up the Spanish air. Also, we will never forget our fi rst dance ñ no practice, we just chose a song we loved and went for it!"

GOLD Finding the perfect 'destination' venue in Richmond, just half an hour from home, meant Elysia and Callum could celebrate in glorious garden-party style surrounded by mellow estate architecture and beautiful wildflowers Photography EVE PHOTOGRAPHY

lysia and Callum had a very clear idea of the kind of wedding they wanted – relaxed, informal and fun. The couple are childhood sweethearts, first meeting at school at the age of 12. In the intervening years, they've both travelled extensively and lived around the country, but they eventually returned to their roots in North Yorkshire. Initially they had thought about a destination wedding – they knew they wanted rustic, whimsical and with plenty of outside space. Then they discovered they had all this on their doorstep (just 30 minutes down the road) with Middleton Lodge Estate and the Fig House, a glorious Georgian property set in 200 acres of splendour close to Richmond. It also has a stunning wildflower garden which matched

everything about their vision. "We loved the laidback, French-château feel – perfect for a glorious garden-party gathering," says Elysia. "While we really liked the idea of a destination wedding, we wanted to ensure all of our loved ones could make the trip. To be able to enjoy a proper Yorkshire wedding near home was just wonderful." With the date sent for early September, and the church ceremony booked in the quaint village of Middleton Tyas, they could start planning. The couple were very clear on their picture for the day. "We wanted a traditional white wedding, but with an informal party to follow," says Elysia. Music was very important and they had chosen acoustic ukulele duo Rock My Reception as soundtrack of the daytime reception – the duo would be on hand to take requests and sing their way through the garden party. With such a lush floral setting, colours ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

were already in abundance and didn't need lots of human arranging. "It was all about making the most of the whimsical wildflowers in the Fig House walled garden, so we kept our flowers simple, with white roses and gorgeous greenery," says Elysia. The day dawned fair and warm, with a real 'Indian summer' quality to the sunshine and, after the beautiful church service, Elysia, Callum and their guests were transported in high style from church to venue. Guests were in a York Pullman vintage double-decker

(serenaded from the top deck by the ukulele duo), while bride and groom and bridal party sipped champagne as they travelled in flower-bedecked Defender 110 Land Rovers (from Yorkshire Vehicle Hire). "Nothing says Yorkshire wedding like it!" says Elysia. The bride wore the St Patrick Famosa gown – a classic figure-hugging mermaid style in champagne with removable longsleeve bodice for day to dancefloor switch. She'd chosen this with the help of "lovely Rebecca" from Hummingbird Bridal Studio in Stocksbridge. The dress had also been tweaked for a glove-like fit by a brilliant specialist. The groom and groomsmen were dressed in smart dark navy suits, which tied in perfectly with the bridesmaids' fabulous Gatsby-style beaded dresses. The party flowed, with reception in

the Fig House and walled garden before a move over to the Forge barn for more celebrating and dancing. Great care had gone into the styling of food and drink, with plenty of champagne in 1920s glassware, sommelier-selected wines for the feast tables and plenty of further fizz as day turned to night. For the menu, the couple had chosen canapés to whet everyone's appetite, followed by a three-course feast of terrine, braised beef and popcorn chocolate tart. There was also a pizza party in the Forge barn to help fuel the big night on the dancefloor to Motown and funk classics. As a lovely post-party wind down, the couple had a paella party the following day in their back garden – a great way to round off the wedding in true destination style and reminisce about the day before. Elysia and Callum say they enjoyed every stage of the planning process – which was a 'stress less' process. "If something feels right, just go with it," says Elysia. "Middleton Lodge was the first venue we had a proper look around and I picked out my dress at the first shop I visited. There’s no need to overcomplicate things. The most important thing is

that you enjoy your day and create many happy memories along the way." They also added in touches that made their day unique. "We even foraged for sloe berries in our local village a year or so before the big day to make homemade sloe gin as wedding favours for our guests." As a professional editor, Elysia also designed clever 'mini magazine' orderof-service booklets, including welcome letter and article about the couple's journey to wedding day in numbers. Elysia said she and Callum had a huge number of wedding 'heroes' who made their day special, from photographer Charlotte Even and videographer Jon Lunt – both of whom captured memories of their day brilliantly and were great to work with – to the excellent hair and

makeup teams. Talented florist Felicity Cook transformed spaces to match their vision. It was, says Elysia, "a gorgeous green oasis". To add to this verdant feel, Elysia, her mum and bridesmaids even went foraging the day before the wedding to create the pew ends for the church. The couple made sure to spend some time together, just to watch the celebration unfolding. "It’s something brides have always told me to do and it really was something so special. During the drinks reception, Callum and I wandered off into the winding walled garden with a glass of champagne and took a seat on a bench at the bottom of the garden. It was so lovely to just take it all in, watching and spending some quiet time together as our friends and family were sipping, smiling and singing in the September sunshine." The final high point came the following morning – a treat with bridal party and close family staying at other suites and cottages around the beautiful estate and the party continuing to day two. "Callum and I awoke before everyone else and had a little stroll through the estate – recalling our best bits from the day before. We were still both on Cloud Nine!"

hen Selina and Zam began planning their wedding weekend in Seville, they knew they wanted to make the very most of this spectacular setting to create something very special. Selina says: "We were hosting our wedding over three days. This gave us the opportunity to use different locations so that guests could experience the authenticity and history. Our goal was to combine this with a very fun weekend for our guests." Their choice of Seville was not chance. Selina had visited with one of her friends two years earlier and fell in love with its history and atmosphere. "We were both single at the time. I still recall (and so does my friend Katie!) saying: ‘I have no idea when I am going to get married or to whom,

74

but I know for sure I am getting married here'." When Zam and Selina visited for the first time together he also fell under its spell and it had to be the place for their wedding. With guests flying in from all points, the first event was the Welcome Party at the city's landmark Abades Triana Restaurant. "Our party was on the terrace, with gorgeous views for our guests of the city. Zam's grandmother kindly designed a beautiful invitation for us, which was based on a white background with red roses. This inspired us for our first theme – a White Party." With theme in place, the couple organised red roses for every guest so that they could pin them on their outfits. "We had a Spanish guitarist playing soft tunes in the background while our guests mingled and got to know each other. It was magical." The second event was the Indian Party, held in the beautiful Hacienda El Vizir – a traditional Moorish-style building, with lush courtyard spaces. "We wanted

this day to be as traditionally Indian as possible," says Selina. "Our guests looked fabulous in their outfits and had made a real effort to look the part." A fun highlight of the day was Zam's Pithi, a ceremony where a paste made mainly of chickpea flour, turmeric and rose water is rubbed on the groom's face, hands and legs. "It is also traditional for the groom's male friends and family to follow up by their own ingredients of choice – in Zam's case it was ketchup, eggs, mayonnaise, Coke, cat food and more along those lines!" says Selina. Indian canapés began being served at sunset, with live stations where guests could get freshly made pani puri and pav bhaji. This was followed by dinner inside the Hacienda and then dancing could begin. "We started with a dance off. It was Zam's friends against my friends and we had been preparing our dances for months," says Selina. "Zam's team won, although I'm still convinced my dance was better!" The party continued to the early hours with a playlist of classic Bollywood and Punjabi music. "DJ Ravi from RV sounds was awesome," adds Selina. The final and main event was the wedding Itself. The afternoon religious ceremony was held at the Casa De Guardiola, a former palace just moments from their evening reception venue,

Alfonso XIII Hotel. "Our final theme was Black Tie and the style and wonderful architecture of both venues meant it was the perfect choice," says Selina. "Both venues were incredible, and with so much history that we went very minimal on flowers. We had a very simple stage decoration of flowers – white and red – and with the same colours on the tables at the reception." Selina and Zam say their MCs Tom and Feryal were "awesome". Selina adds: "They are both great friends of ours and were super entertaining. We stuck with the traditions of a father of bride speech, groom speech and groomsman's speech. All of them were so special." Who Killed the DJ were also a fantastic part of the celebration, with violinist Quike Navarro playing solo at the ceremony and saxophonist Guillarmo Fernandez soloing at the cocktail reception. Then they combined for the reception proper with their DJ. Zam and Selina had prepared another surprise – a short first dance routine. After the reception, the couple and their guests moved on to the hotel's Salon Betis for a brilliant after party lasting until the early hours.

Real Weddings SEVILLE

With superb assistance from their team in Seville, including planners Optimum Weddings, this was a seamless party weekend, but time out for guests was also built in. "We had decided early on we would not have any early events. Guests were partying every night to the early hours and Seville is so beautiful we also wanted them to have the time to experience the city in the day," says Selina. The couple were also meticulous in maintaining flow, ensuring no long gaps between evening parties. Selina and Zam's tips for other couples are not to stress about smaller details, especially the cake. "It was one of the last things on our list and we made a rushed decision. At the reception we both thought: 'that’s really small and disappointing'. But not one of our guests even noticed or remembered it. In fact, the only two people who mentioned we should have got a better cake were our mums!

As to highlights, there were many. "My father's speech was definitely one," says Selina. "There was so much meaning and depth to his words, which were beautifully expressed." Another was Zam's grandmother right in the centre of the dancefloor. "She is 85 years old and her energy and beaming smile were unforgettable." The couple also love the fact that guests got involved in the fun of the Indian Dance Off. "Many of our guests had never done a dance routine before, let alone one to Bollywood music. But they took it really seriously with a real competitive spirit between the two groups. We are so proud of them!"

SUCCESS

Dreaming of a destination wedding? Dyana Dessar of destination wedding planning specialist optimum weddings answers your key questions

CARVOEIRO, PORTUGAL

BELOW AND RIGHT: RECENT OPTIMUM WEDDINGS' CELEBRATIONS

Q How long does it take to plan a destination wedding? A We would recommend one year. That said, we recently organised a wedding in five months – a challenge, but it worked out beautifully. Q Are there differences between countries? A Time to plan depends on the season and paperwork requirements of each country. Couples looking at high season anywhere in Europe should allow a minimum of six months. Essential paperwork will be completed and you will have the full choice of venues and suppliers. Top spots and people generally get booked well in advance! Q What about legalities? A If you want a legal civil wedding ceremony then it’s important to pick a country that allows for this for non-residents – Italy, Portugal, Malta, France and Greece are all popular choices. Religious ceremonies vary, so it's vital to work with wedding planners who understand the laws of the country you choose. At optimum weddings we cover Europe plus select destinations worldwide, with team members in each location. Q Why do you think destination weddings are now so popular? A When there are specific traditions this can be a way to have a more intimate wedding than is expected back home. Or couples may have family and friends spread across the world and want to choose a meeting point for a celebration. There are

optimum weddings creates seamlessly orchestrated celebrations at select destinations around the world. See page 74 for one of their recent weddings. optimumweddings.com

many good reasons for choosing destination over home, but the opportunity to say vows in a beautiful location with great weather remains one of the top reasons for couples. Q What about costs for guests? A For most weddings we plan, guests pay their own flights and accommodation and we work with the venue and nearby hotels to arrange preferential room rates. We advise a budget for extra events. A casual meet and greet before the wedding is an ice breaker and a relaxed post-wedding party is also a good idea. Q What’s the number one reason couples choose a destination wedding? A Most couples mention weather. Often the first thing they will describe as their vision is a clifftop for the ceremony. For couples we work with, it is about achieving

something magical with their budget. They may have attended lots of weddings with the same format back home, so this becomes something unique to them.

Q What trends are coming through? A The beach and clifftop weddings remain perennially popular, and for good reason, but we’re seeing growth in city weddings – especially among US clients. These offer scope to do something in an amazing cultural location. We love planning them! Q Which are your favourite locations? A We work in spectacular places around the world and continue to source fantastic locations for our clients, but some places do stand out. The Alfonso Hotel in Seville is historical, beautiful and right in the heart of this gorgeous Spanish city. With stunning clifftop sea views, the Tivoli Hotel Carvoeiro, in southern Portugal is also a big favourite of mine. ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

Q What are the benefits of choosing an exclusive-use wedding venue and what should we be looking for? A One key benefit is that the venue is yours alone. Taking over this space – making it your home for the duration – has many benefits, including knowing that younger wedding guests are safe and have the freedom to make a noise. Grounds are important, but so are internal layouts as you want the celebration to flow. All our properties lend themselves to different styles of celebration and with spaces that work for different stages – from ceremony to dinner to party. You want great backdrops for photography. Period features and light-filled rooms also create an instant sense of occasion, requiring minimal dressing. Of course, with an exclusive-use property you can also go to town on venue dressing. Do ask for examples of other weddings at the venue and find out how recommended suppliers are chosen. We have over 30 years' experience of hosting weddings across our team. Our personal wedding managers know each venue inside out and we only recommend suppliers if we have firm evidence from couples and our own experience that they are reliable and excellent at what they do.

Q We would like to do something special with our wedding bands. Can you advise? A Wedding rings are pieces of jewellery that you wear every day, so they have special significance. That's why we began our make your own wedding rings workshop. It's a romantic way to do something more personal – especially as couples

invariably make each other's rings. You work under the expert tutelage of our master goldsmith and start by designing your ring – choosing width, shape and finish of the band. He then shows you how to create the ring and you use specialist goldsmith tools to shape the metal, solder the band then finish the ring. Once it's been finished and polished, we send it to the Assay Office to be hallmarked. We began offering the workshop because so many couples were fascinated by the process and this offers the opportunity to create something everlasting and with huge symbolic value. We charge a flat fee for use of the workshop, goldsmith time and all tools and practice materials. The cost of the bands depends on weight and metal you choose – we give a precise quote once your design is finalised. Couples love the experience, which includes refreshments, lunch and champagne to celebrate the making of your rings.

Q I have a lot of vegans at my wedding but also a fair few meat lovers. How do I come up with a menu to satisfy both sides? A While it’s never been a better time to offer plant-based options, it’s important that your meat eating guests don’t feel side-lined. Make sure canapés are satisfying – with so many delicious grains, salsas, flatbreads and dips there’s absolutely no reason why everyone shouldn’t get filling bites. For the wedding breakfast itself, consider choosing a starter that can be easily adapted to all tastes. Our heritage carrot mezze can be served with a curd cheese to those who have dairy or a side of coconut yoghurt for those who don’t. When it comes to mains, we are serving guinea fowl more often. It has a great flavour and won’t put off those who don’t eat red meat. For vegan guests, options can include Miso marinated beetroot fillet and pea & potato cannelloni. Dessert is the course where you can go completely vegan, as plant-based ingredients are so good. We’ve been developing many ideas using aqua fava meringue, and just one utterly delicious option is coconut mousse with dark chocolate, rum, mango and pineapple umbrella.

DESIGN A MENU TO SATISFY BOTH MEAT EATERS AND VEGANS, SAYS JENS NISSON OF BUBBLE FOOD

Maids to Measure Sisters India and Sinclair Sellars founded Maids to Measure in 2012, offering UK-designed and made bridesmaid gowns with style to match the bride

I

was working at Vera Wang back in 2012 and brides kept asking if I could recommend anywhere for bridesmaids – there seemed to be a big gap in the market. Sinclair is a lawyer, so she had the business side covered and I had the design side. We began by creating bridesmaid dresses for a friend who was getting married – we still can't believe she let us do it – and before we knew it we had a queue. Bridal parties would arrive at our flat expecting a shop. The showroom and changing room was actually a bedroom, but girls loved the personal touch. At first we were made to measure only, but over time we found the right factory in London. Now we carry stock of everything and offer short lead times. Investment support from Touker Suleyman [of Dragons' Den] has been a huge help. For some bridal parties a visit to

our showroom is not possible or convenient, so we've expanded online ordering. Personal styling appointments remain a huge part of what Maids to Measure is about and a fun experience. One-hour appointments can be booked online – we recommend two hours for six or more bridesmaids! We lock the door, put the music on and the bridal party have a massive trying on session, glasses of bubbles in hand. Our dresses come in sizes 8-24, are double lined (which is really important) and with lots of options so girls can find their individual style. Bridesmaids are a big part of the look of a wedding, so we think this is a good element to organise early. The showroom appointment is often a reunion but can also be the first time all the bridesmaids have met, so this is a way to break the ice and make choosing the dresses a great experience.

Maids to Measure is at 100 Waterford Road, London SW6. For appointments and online ordering, visit maidstomeasure.com

edding gift lists are an opportunity to get creative. It is not often in life we have the scope to rethink whole living spaces. This is also two people coming together on taste – definitely a fresh beginning – so the whole process of choosing the gift list is all about marking out your style together as a couple. Savanna & Josh Most treasured gift

Top tips for creating a list

I think it would have to be our Mr & Mrs Smith voucher towards a stay at Artist Residence Brighton hotel for two. There is honestly nothing better than having a little extended honeymoon.

Creating our list was a bit challenging as we were moving house soon after the wedding so we didn’t really know what our new space was like or what it would need. So, we went for the good basics – new hoover, beautiful serving dishes and crockery, a kettle and toaster set, décor bits and one too many bowls (according to my Josh).

Most useful gift Our set of Sabatier knives. My husband is the chef in our relationship and I’ve never seen him so excited to start cooking – effortless slicing and dicing to his heart’s content.

Reason for having a gift list We had our wedding back home in South Africa. So, with most of our guests residing in SA, we needed them to be able to purchase gifts easily online and for the gifts to be delivered all at once after the wedding. Prezola offered this – and so effortlessly.

Gift list experience with Prezola Prezola just offer an amazing variety of gifts. We really loved the unique and personal experience. There was always someone to assist you when you needed it, and quick responses too. We also had so much help and assistance once our gifts were chosen and the team were so accommodating when we asked if our gifts could be delivered to our new address. Honestly, the Prezola team gets 10/10 for service, easy to use website and incredible gift options. To find out more about gift lists at Prezola, visit prezola.com 124

ARTHUR PRICE 44-piece cutlery set and canteen, £249

NEPTUNE nude sketch, £345

Most treasured gift ANDREW MARTIN Bhilai coffee table, £1,350

We were gifted an incredible painting from a special group of friends. It’s so special to get something that you can keep forever.

Most useful gift A 44-piece set of cutlery – we love to host dinner parties and I love to create a stunning table setting. We were gifted this by my parents’ best friends who also received a cutlery set for their wedding 54 years ago and still use it daily. There are so many stories behind each gift, which is so special.

Top tip for creating a list Add enough items at different price brackets for all of your guests. We wanted to make sure we had plenty of gifts between £15 to £30 for those who wanted to buy us a gift without breaking the bank. But then why not also have a little bit of fun and add that £1,000 coffee table to your list as you never know who might surprise you!

THE WHITE COMPANY Fine silver photo frame, £60

By using a gift list company (and for us it had to be The Wedding Shop), you can guarantee you will love every single gift you receive. We love how every gift has a sentimental meaning and reminds us of the person who purchased it for us.

Gift list experience with The Wedding Shop We have attended around 30 weddings in the last three years (crazy, we know!) and The Wedding Shop was recommended by so many other couples. We visited the London Townhouse one evening after work, which was a wonderful experience. The team were lovely and we had great fun discovering each room with a glass of bubbles in hand. The website is incredibly user friendly which made our experience of adding gifts seamless. The selection provided was also super relevant to what we were after and had all our favourite brands. We loved how we could add activities and experiences. After the wedding, The Wedding Shop's 'Thank You Manager' tracks every guest's gift and personal message – I don’t think we could have got through all our thank you cards without it. Wedding planner NOTES

T

here's bold and arresting use of colour in wedding stationery these days – a sign that couples are increasingly looking to personalise their wedding day. The theme you choose can match the setting or the season, or reflect your chosen backdrop or hue/s. Good, too, to see so many invitations being personalised with extra elements. Monograms are always chic, but we particularly love the use of illustrations and other 'significant' images – be it the wedding location, the church, the place a couple met or their pet dog. As Lewis R. Stevenson of leading bespoke stationer Leeming Brothers notes on his blog, couples these days are much more confident about putting their own stamp on their wedding suite.

aint Lucia is a Caribbean jewel, with everything you could want for a romantic honeymoon or dream destination wedding. Little wonder then that it has been voted World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination 11 times at the World Travel Awards. Easy to get to, with daily British Airways flights, it offers scenery and culture that you will fall in love with. The island’s natural wonders include the iconic Piton Mountains, while lush rainforest and waterfalls and palm-fringed beaches create a magical backdrop. Then there’s the diversity of accommodation and wonderful personal service – from lovely boutique hotels and luxurious all-inclusive resorts to spacious private villas and suite apartments. It’s easy to combine different options to explore the island’s landscape at your own pace. There’s a rich variety of activities to suit every taste. Sunset catamaran cruises chilled days on the beach and spa treatments are high on most couples’ honeymoon list. But how about something more high-energy – kayaking, snorkelling, zip-lining, paddle-boarding, hiking or horse-riding? The landscape is perfect for explorers as well as sun seekers. Meanwhile, foodies will love the rum and wine tasting, chocolate making and Creole cookery classes. Saint Lucia’s resorts offer sumptuous dining options, while speciality restaurants offer delicious local cuisine with unique Saint Lucian twists. Visit the island during one of the Summer Festivals for a flavour of the island’s culture and musical heritage. You can take your pick from the Jazz festival in May, Carnival in July or Roots & Soul in August. Come autumn, you have Creole Heritage Month (October).

CELEBRATE AGAINST A BACKDROP OF THE PITON MOUNTAINS

Whatever month you visit, there are some sights you won’t want to miss. At the Caribbean’s only ‘drive in volcano’, you can take a mud bath in the Sulphur Springs, while the UNESCO World Heritage Site Piton Mountains are majestic to visit by land, by sea or on a special helicopter tour. The island’s rich flora and fauna is showcased at the island’s botanical gardens, while Pigeon Island National Landmark reveals a rich and turbulent history, as well as must-see island landscapes from the lookout at Fort Rodney. Marigot Bay, where the original Dr Dolittle was filmed, has been called the most beautiful bay in the whole Caribbean. As to the island’s working cocoa plantations, they are pure chocolate heaven.

Taking in the sweeping view down to the river and marveling at the exotic flowers, we freshen up with cool, scented towels (as we soon discover, towels appear magically every time we feel even mildly overheated). Welcome to the world of The Peninsula, Bangkok where you are instantly wrapped in the arms of happiness and joyous hospitality. The Peninsula rises majestically above the banks of the River of Kings – it is the perfect luxury base to explore bustling Bangkok. Our palatial room with vertigo-inducing balcony overlooks the sparkle of the city below us. A large living area, dressing room and sumptuous bathroom complete the picture of luxury. Downstairs, the longest hotel pool in Bangkok beckons with its 88-metres of sparkling water on three tiers, astounding river views and outstanding cabana service. We are never without refreshment poolside. Next door at the spa we indulge in the Essential Mind Treatment combining massage, healing oils and vibrational sound therapy. Nestled in our deluxe private suite, complete with sauna and petal-filled jacuzzi, we have checked in to heaven. It's the same elevated experience with food. Every mouthful we sample tastes sublime. Mornings start with a sumptuous breakfast on the shaded terrace of The River Cafe, which also offers all-day dining with authentic Thai dishes and international favourites. It’s all alfresco too at Thiptara, where we feast on the best Thai cuisine in seductive lamplight beneath a 120-year-old banyan tree. But, in a paradise for gourmets, the culinary highlight of this stage of our trip turns out to be an incredible Eight Elements dinner at Mei Jiang Cantonese restaurant. As the name hints, eight delectable courses with each made up of eight ingredients – a theatrical meal of dreams. We mainly use the river to explore the city and ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

The Peninsula has its own boat (naturally!). We hop on to visit the newly opened ICONSIAM for great designer shopping and to explore Bangkok’s fascinating Old Quarter and canals. And one evening we head out for a sunset cruise to the Temple of Dawn, taking in the sights of the city while sipping champagne and sampling the daintiest of canapés. Because that’s just part of The Peninsula life – we could get very used to it. Our journey has not ended and It’s just a short flight from the bustle of Bangkok to the delights of island life on Phuket. Our beach hideaway – The Sarojin – is set on 11 stunning kilometres of white sand beach lapped by azure waters. exotic flowers and artfully styled fluffy towels. Next door a daybed, desk and fully stocked fridge are at our disposal in the living area, with the added pleasure of a large outdoor shower for post-pool refresh or morning hedonism. There is nothing quite like showering in nature to a chorus of tropical birds. Our Sarojin days are all about lazy beachfront hours, swims and beach meanders, as well as indulgent poolside dreaming. And there's more great food – starting with the all-day à la carte breakfast at Ficus. We also love hanging out at the Edge beachside restaurant, sampling Thai and South-East Asian food and deliciously inventive cocktails that are best drunk under the trees with our feet in the sand. We check in for the Herbal Aroma massage at Pathway Spa and even try our hand at cooking local specialities. The hotel is surrounded by five national parks, so plenty of opportunities for adventure. One day we take a pleat boat ride through the 135-km Takuapa river system – known as the 'Little Amazon' – and plant our own mangrove. We explore a local food market, always something of a fascination for me.

We also make a special journey to the fishing village of Baan Nam Kem with its moving Tsunami Monument By night, The Sarojin twinkles with lanterns and fairy lights. We indulge one evening at the incredible Chef’s Table dinner at Ficus – a fabulous fusion of Thai and European flavours. Another of our most magical evenings of the whole glorious trip is heading out to the Sai Rung Waterfall in the jungle where what seem like a million candles have been lit for us and dinner is served at the base of the falls. Every mouthful of every meal is a special occasion at The Sarojin. In fact, our whole journey through Thailand leaves us feeling like the most privileged VIPs enjoying the genuine warmth and hospitality of this fabled land of sunshine and smiles.

he tiny nation of Barbados in the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles is the perfect get-away-from-it-all destination with dazzling white, sandy beaches and turquoise seas. Lush landscapes and friendly, welcoming locals complete the picture – and we feel instantly at home from the time we land in the airport arrivals hall after our direct flight from London. There’s a distinctively British vibe on this English-speaking island paradise. Reminders are everywhere – from the passion for cricket (even an Oval cricket ground) to the Instagram-worthy red postboxes – and it's a magnet for British A-listers seeking winter sunshine without travelling too far. Our home-from-home island destination is the stunning Royal Westmoreland estate. Set over a sprawling, beautifully landscaped 750 acres in St James on the island’s prestigious West Coast, this is all about life's pleasures. Our luxury villa is set in lush tropical gardens

with a sparkling communal pool and azure sea views from the fabulous covered terrace. Inside, there’s plenty of space to relax, with an airy living area, large bedroom and luxury ensuite – so the perfect base. We are impressed by the other swish accommodation on site here, ranging from modern golf cottages to elegant townhouses. Everything is designed to catch the cooling breezes and provide great views of sea or tee. If you are feeling active, the resort is a sports lovers' dream with its immaculate Robert Trent Jones Jnr-designed golf course, superb clay tennis courts, well-equipped gym and plush new wellness centre. The elegant clubhouse serves tasty light meals with emerald fairway views and the vibrant Rum Shak is open all day for local food and cocktail treats. When you fancy a change of scene, it's a short drive from your villa on the complimentary shuttle to private beach club Mullins. This is the place to while away hours in sunshine heaven sampling exotic cocktails and enjoying indulgent beachside service. It's also a real treat for seafood aficionados.

Luxury Travel BARBADOS

One of the great things about Barbados is that you’re never more than 20 minutes from the sea, and it’s an easy island to navigate. This is just as well, as there’s plenty to discover. Just down the road, Holetown is the site where John Powell (having strayed off course on his way home from Brazil) landed in 1625 and claimed Barbados in the name of King James I. There’s lots happening here – great restaurants, myriad shopping opportunities and buzzing beach bars where everyone wants to talk to you and rum punch is sold by the gallon. Speaking of rum, our visit to nearby St Nicholas Abbey proves fascinating. Built in 1658, it’s one of the island’s oldest surviving plantations. We explore the great house, surrounding gardens and rum distillery, tasting some of that Bajan liquid treasure along the way. While the West Coast is the focus for many visitors due to its mirror-glass flat sea, there’s plenty more to see further afield. The Animal Flower Cave nestles below the dramatic cliff tops of the island's northernmost point. We are glad we made the journey to explore its spectacular chambers before taking in the far-reaching views while sampling tasty local dishes in the restaurant. Another must visit, this time on the east coast, is the quaint seaside village of Bathsheba. It is home to the small churning bay known as the Soup Bowl. A favoured spot with surfers, it's amazing to watch its crashing waves even if you don't feel bold enough to

“Our homefrom-home is the stunning Royal Westmoreland estate, set over a verdant, beautifully landscaped 750 acres” ride them. And at Dina’s, overlooking these seascapes, we sample more of that delicious rum that seems to punctuate every step of our journey round the island. Of course, we also have to take to the sea. Sailing the azure waters aboard a luxury catamaran, cocktail in hand, life doesn't get much better. We drink in the views, stopping along the way for a lazy dip in the balmy waters full of sea turtles. Barbados does feel rather like heaven on earth, and for us Royal Westmoreland is definitely the place to be.

orfu may be a familiar Greek island delight for many, but it's our first time. As someone who grew up on My Family and Other Animals, I have a rosy fictional vision of crazy Brits and eccentric locals. While the island still celebrates its links with the Durrells, they are a tiny literary footnote in a long history dating back to Homer's Odyssey. It is believed that Corfu may even have been inspiration for the island setting of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The landscape is rugged and green and spells of Venetian rule have left it with some stunning architecture – Corfu Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today Corfu has an increasingly modern-smart twist and MarBella Nido – our base at Agios Ioannis Peristeron on the south-east corner of the island – has earned plaudits galore since its opening in summer 2018. Strictly adults only, and with a combination of luxe suites and private villas ranged up a vertiginous hillside overlooking the Ionian Sea, it is celebrated for its food, for its views and for a cool Corfiot vibe blending island architectural heritage and cool styling. It sits adjacent to its sister property MarBella Corfu and the 'Nido' in its name comes from the Italian word to nest – perfect then for a lovers' retreat. Our first sight of the place is in blinding Greek sunshine and retreating to the Orangerie is a pleasant way to check in, cocktail in hand, and admire the artfully arranged objects, plants and botanic drawings. The reception space is built for the Mediterranean climate – lofty ceilings and giant picture windows to share that luscious view of the turquoise sea. There's also a huge fireplace which, as we later discover, is lit at night so people can have a cosy nightcap – one of many lovely homely touches at MarBella Nido. Our suite is right up the hill. We discover that there's logic to this climb as every guest in each of the suites and villas gets a prime view down to the water. We're up on high, so have bagged a stunningly beautiful vista. room is neutral and chic. The private terrace with plunge pool is a heavenly place to enjoy a morning coffee or sundowner (something that becomes a daily ritual). We love the quiet and sense of privacy of being in our hilltop fortress and quickly discover that we don't need to tax our leg muscles as the fleet of golf buggies and super-cheerful staff will ferry us up and down whenever we choose. The pace of life here is very chilled, with poolside the main draw for many guests. There is also a small but idyllically peaceful slice of private beach with loungers and towels for guests and even a bell for waiter service from the hotel, should we choose. There we while away happy afternoons snoozing and occasionally making our way into the sea to cool off. And, oh bliss, Akrogiali Taverna Kerkyra (signboard legend: established 1948) is on our beach, conveniently close to our loungers. The perfect Greek taverna, this becomes our go-to

lunch spot. I dine on fish or choice mezes, while my partner tucks into lots of delicious lamb, local style While the delights of the beach and our own private pool and terrace keep us well occupied, we do check out the fabulous infinity pool for more active endeavours. It's brilliantly designed and a real sun-trap during the day, with cool bar for drinks and poolside snacks. Early evenings become our favourite time for lazy laps with regular pauses to tread water and gaze down at the water below. The rooftop Apaggio à la carte restaurant has the same peerless sea views and offers gourmet Greek and Italian flavours. There's a big wellness focus here and there's a spa on site, with treatment rooms offering Cinq Mondes serums and pampering oils – they even offer in-suite treatments. Guests can also access spa and fitness facilities at the sister hotel. Food is a real star at MarBella Nido – we had heard good things

but reality exceeds them. Leisurely breakfasts are taken alfresco on the sunny terrace of San Giovanni Restaurant – delicious breads and pastries, eggs to order, local yogurt and honey, fresh fruits and lots of strong coffee. We favour the same spot for dinners buffet style; buffets are never easy for chefs but the culinary team here are superb. Delicious salads (what I always feel like after a day at the beach) vie for attention with Med cuisine, grilled meats and local fish and seafood, all prepped perfectly. Desserts are something else and my salad health kick is diluted after I discover the corner manned by a lovely chef generous with his scoops of homemade ice-cream. Every visit to Corfu should include at least one stop-off in Corfu Town (around 30-minutes by taxi). We wander around the jumble of narrow streets lined with curiosity and gift shops and admire the Venetian architecture that earned it UNESCO protection. It's worth taking a trip uphill on foot or by bus to Mon Repos Palace – former home of

British governors and birthplace of Prince Philip. It has stunning views over the Old Town and coast and lovely grounds. Near its entrance are the archaeological remains of what some believe was the very first settlement at Corfu Town. While there is more than enough to see around Corfu island for adventurous souls, MarBella Nido is also top spot for anyone who just wants to shrug on the flip-flops and clamp on the shades. With delicious food and prime views over the Ionian Sea, it has got the measure of what people actually want from down time à deux – a very luxurious and tranquil place to nest.

ea voyages offer the allure of distant shores, but not when you're travel sick at the mere thought of waves cresting the bow. So Fingal, a luxury floating hotel that stays safe in harbour and delivers exceptional hospitality and food, seems to promise everything I'd want from the cruise experience. You could say it floats my boat. For my partner – with at least one ship's captain in his forebears and a father who was an actual lighthouse keeper in the north of Scotland – this is beyond exciting. Fingal has a fascinating history as a working vessel delivering essential supplies and maintenance staff to the lighthouses of the Northern Lighthouse Board. She was retired from sea duties in 2000 and, after a spell in Cornwall, was taken under the wing of The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust. It was keen to restore this piece of maritime history as something beautiful for visitors to Edinburgh. Our vessel is moored in Leith, which is a quarter of the capital we don't know at all. trading history, and with a salty tang in the air, this offers the promise of being on the water yet conveniently close to Edinburgh central two miles down the road. It's also within easy walking distance of Royal Yacht Britannia, so handy for exploring another piece of maritime history. We are awed by the elegance of Fingal – especially as this was a working ship navigating some of the most treacherous waters around our coast. Her working days done, she is a thing of beauty in her black and red livery. Embarking up the gangplank – cruise style – we find ourselves in a swish Deco-style reception, wood panelled and with a glamorous glass lift in its centre. What we love instantly is that this is a setting full of maritime references and luxe touches. Each room is individually designed and our Classic Cabin is all pleasing curves, with tactile wallcoverings and huge bed with cosy woollen throw. We discover that every element here has been custom designed, and with clever references to Scotland's seagoing traditions. We have portholes – of course – and a door that gives us access outdoors, perfect if we feel like taking a turn around the residents' deck to catch the sea breeze. The bathroom is

delightful – huge rain shower, elegant lighting, ship's-wheel brass taps, Noble Isle toiletries and fluffy white robes. We set out to walk around old Leith and it offers insights into the past of a bit of the Scottish capital that was, until relatively recently, off the tourist path. The cobbled streets and merchants' houses put us in mind of Hanseatic cities (it did have a Hansa link). You can see that this was once a very wealthy and cosmopolitan trading hub – it was formerly a separate city to Edinburgh. Now it has a hip and alternative vibe and we stumble across cool studios and seriously good bars and fish restaurants. After our breezy walk, we head back to our ship for afternoon tea. It's served in The Lighthouse Bar, a gorgeous copper-ceilinged space that offers fine views over water from its swish banquette seating. Tea is delivered on tiered stands, with savouries first – amuse bouche, delicate hot morsels and an array of sandwiches including fillings such as Fingal's own hot smoked salmon. Then the sweet stand arrives and we are overawed by macarons, choux buns and divine buttermilk and fruit scones. After a scone too far we admit defeat and retire to our cabin knowing there will be no need for dinner. The next day's breakfast is just as lavish and sets us up for the day. Individual dishes are cooked to order and I opt for the eggs benedict while my partner has a full Scottish. Both are delicious and with coffee and juice on tap. The

continental-style buffet features pastries and breads galore and treats such as more of Fingal's home-cured hot smoked salmon. At breakfast, as with our afternoon tea, we notice a pleasing buzz. Overnight residents are joined by people meeting for birthdays, business and just because they want to try out this new floating hotel. Before we disembark we are given a privileged tour of the ship. The curvaceous ballroom is high glamour – a double-height space with twin sweeping staircases that's perfect for a wedding for up to 60 dinner guests. My partner revels in the engine room tour. Restoration is still a painstaking work in progress, but it's fascinating to peer behind glass at the beautifully polished machinery that once powered this plucky vessel through high seas. Returning to dry land we do feel like we've been on a bit of a voyage. We love Fingal – it's different to anywhere else we've stayed and a most welcoming place to bunk down for the night.

Real Weddings PERFECT DAY

Perfect Day

For Olivia and Peter there was one magical shot captured for their wedding album that has very special meaning

W

hen Olivia celebrated her wedding to Peter at St Mary’s of Easebourne in West Sussex last September there was a magical reminder of her late Mother in the white feathers thrown along with the confetti by her aunts. Olivia takes up the story. Olivia: It was a very relaxed, homegrown wedding and despite not having my darling Mother to help with the planning (which she would have loved!) it felt like a real team effort. Peter is very creative and was a hands-on groom throughout. 146

Collecting jars, drying petals – you name it, we did it! His Mother Vanessa painted the lovely table plans and his sister Fiona, a talented florist, created the beautiful arrangements for church and marquee, including South Africa’s national flower, the Protea, which you can see in my bouquet. We had family and friends fly in from all over to be with us – from South Africa (where Peter is originally from) and the US to Europe and Australia – so it was a truly international day in the British countryside. This was the same church where we'd said goodbye to my Mother two-and-a-half years before and with the same vicar who had given the service then. He was incredible. After my Mother passed away, I kept

seeing white feathers in the most unlikely places and I took great comfort from them as a symbol of her and as a sign she was still close by, something family and close friends knew. Even when Peter and I first viewed what became our home there were feathers – we found one right on the front doorstep and we just knew. Both my aunts live in the States and I hadn’t seen them since my Mother was alive, so it was very touching that they could make the journey to be with us. It was even more moving that they thought to throw feathers right at this moment as a nod to my beautiful Mother. It was a total surprise – you can see it in our faces – and we are so lucky our amazing photographer captured such a special memory for us to treasure always.
