[WELCOME] THE

Editor’s

LETTER

T

hough it doesn’t feel like 12 months have passed since its last occurrence, the mania of the Christmas season is upon us once again. We’ve become accustomed, albeit with quiet disdain, to the festive decorations and gifts edging their way onto the high street earlier and earlier. There’s an absurd hype over the build-up to Christmas, rather than the day itself. I am reminded of walking into a shop last year to find the staff hoovering up fake snow... on Christmas Eve. That is not to say, however, that I am an incurable ‘bah humbug’. There is an inherent romance to the holiday season; the coming together of families, indulging in never-ending dinners, snuggling up by the fire and, of course, the gifts. In this issue, we’ve compiled two luxury stocking filler pages, plus a local gift guide special. In other news, we have an exclusive interview with Maggie & Rose founder Maggie Bolger, to discuss the impending opening of the new branch on Chiswick High Road. Nancy Alsop caught up with paper sculptor Su Blackwell. Her beguiling, painstaking creations make up a new picture book, The Fairytale Princess, that people of all ages can enjoy.

HAMMERSMITH APOLLO Following his recent sell-out tour of Australia and New Zealand, musical comedy king Bill Bailey returns to his home turf of Hammersmith to perform QUALMPEDDLER for one night only this month. The show is derived from Bill’s doubts about the modern world. These feelings of unease and apprehension grew into qualms, which have been channelled into this brand new exciting and eccentric live show. Tickets £25; hammersmithapollo.com

HAMMERSMITH APOLLO Long ago, the Mayans predicted the end of our world (or, rather, their calendar finished) on 21 December 2012. Rather than sitting at home fretting over our impending doom, why not cheer yourself up with a night of comedy, science and music courtesy of the ever enigmatic professor Brian Cox and comedy veteran Robin Ince. Warning: this one-off show contains rationalism, and the chance that you will still be alive the following day. Tickets from £25; hammersmithapollo.com

[ART, MUSIC, FILM, BOOKS] Love to dance

Sadly, Chiswick institution Rambert Dance Company will be moving on to pastures new in 2013 (well, the South Bank), to accommodate their ever-ambitious and large-scale productions. Make sure you catch the grandiose Labyrinth of Love, which kicked off in October and is continuing to tour the country until April next year. In the spirit of the ground breaking contemporary dance home, Labyrinth of Love is an ambitious production exploring the theme of love and its neverending ups and downs in the magical and surreal world of a multi-faceted labyrinth. Marguerite Donlon’s choreography captures not only the romantic moments of love but also its humour and surprise. rambert.org.uk

GOING UNDERGROUND

No matter how much we whinge about its delays, cleanliness, and Hammersmith & City line, there’s no denying the wonder that is the London Underground. Undergound: How the Tube Shaped London is a new coffee-table tome from Penguin celebrating the rich history and influence of the world’s first underground railway, which will be 150 years old in 2013. The book documents the railway system’s early years through to the present day, with beautiful original photographs and vintage posters, including this charming advertisment for the District Railway’s Americanstyle electric trains introduced, incredibly, circa 1905. £25, by David Bownes, Oliver Green and Sam Mullins. The grandfather of British pop art, Chiswick’s own Sir Peter Blake, unveiled his new walk-through gallery of London-inspired art at Gatwick airport. Curated by CCA Galleries, the exhibition will be a permanent installation. ‘This project instantly captured my imagination’ Blake commented, ‘it’s a chance to showcase London to an international public and to remind Brits how great it is to be back on British soil.’ ccagalleries.com

Fashion

In Style

Influential fashion designer Madeleine Press on her recent position as Creative Director of ROSS X BUTE times are difficult it is important to refocus negativity and turn things into a positive. Supporting local business is a must. Times are difficult for manufacturing, wholesale, export and retail. It is a great time to look at the possibilities of British manufacturing in preference to overseas markets. We are concentrating our efforts to make more products in the UK. There is a great incentive called ‘Let’s Make It Here’ which is a database listing production units across the UK. Incentives like this are so important.

How did you get into fashion and when did you decide you could make a career out of it? I have been interested in fashion since I was a little girl; I always loved to dress up and loved fl icking though piles of fashion magazines. My Mum taught me how to sew when I was very young and the interest of playing with fabric and making clothes grew from there. Becoming a fashion designer has been a natural progression for me from the skills that I have learnt from my parents. What is your design ethos? As a designer I am not interested in reinventing the wheel, but in perfecting it. I like clothes that are modern and functional, calm and confident. Quality of cut and fit is important to me. I like to play with cut and with texture. I enjoy designing clothes that are timeless but with an edge. My look is simple but directional enough without following obvious trends. How did the partnership with ROSS X BUTE come about? In August 2011 my husband, Stuart, was approached to become MD of the company – the shareholders wanted to realise the full potential of the brand. He asked me to come in and consult on the AW12 collection. The chance then came to become partners in the business, which we saw as a wonderful opportunity – the wonderful heritage of the brand and the Bute Family combined to make for a very potent story. Many brands invent this kind of back-story, but ROSS X BUTE has it naturally. What were your inspirations behind the new AW12 season range? The AW12 collection is inspired by a mix of masculine meets feminine. A tension between the two that creates a sensually androgynous look. The collection combines and contrasts different fabrics and textures within the same garment. The design process is anything but linear. I

follow my instinct rather than themes and trends. Inspiration can come from travel, books, films and hunting down vintage in markets. I am also inspired by cut, form and texture. Knitwear is a real passion of mine; from a strand of yarn there are so many possibilities with texture and shape. Being a fashion designer is not just about drawing, you need to learn all aspects of the process from the design through to the manufacturing, delivery and sales of the product. Do you think it is a difficult time for the industry given the financial climate? Yes, it is. When

What do you like about living in Chiswick? I love the open spaces, being close to the river and to one of my favourite places, Kew Gardens. I also love the amazing selection of restaurants. I have a seven year old daughter, we moved here when she was 14 months old to escape the chaos of living in Earls Court. We wanted to move somewhere with a more relaxed vibe, a place with open spaces but which still had a London energy – we found all of this and more in Chiswick. I have worked as a designer in Japan for many years and I’ve always loved going to Tokyo, my husband and I have often thought about moving there – it would be fun, but it wouldn’t be Chiswick. Th is is where I feel at home. rossandbute.com

What materials and prints do you like to work with?

I love working with all the materials that I have chosen for the collection, the jersey is really like butter and I do feel that it is more important for sleepwear than day-wear that the fabric feel is as gorgeous as possible, otherwise it could really affect the quality of your sleep. There is something very comforting in sleeping in luxury fabrics!

In the Family Way

I

The popular Maggie & Rose family members club is expanding, with their new site on Chiswick High Road opening next year. Gemma Billington discusses the move with founder Maggie Bolger

suppose it is pertinent to point out that I personally don’t have any children. Therefore, the Maggie & Rose concept – a family members club – was not an institution that I had any prior experience of or need for. When I visit the founder, Maggie Bolger, at the original Kensington branch, it’s filled with pushchairs, pregnant women and clusters of excitable youngsters. Bolger is friendly with an astute, business-like demeanour, and nurses one of Maggie & Rose’s famed coffees throughout our chat. Bolger summarises the concept of the club pragmatically, ‘it’s a place you can go, with your children, and hang out whenever you want. It’s supposed to be your home from home, that’s the whole ethos.’ On a

humdrum mid-morning Tuesday, the place is positively bustling. Clearly Bolger has hit the proverbial nail on the head. Maggie & Rose recently celebrated their fifth birthday, and I’m here to discuss the brand new Chiswick branch, opening on the High Road in March 2013. I ask what attracted the team to the area? ‘There are so many families in Chiswick, it’s sort of the next zone that people move out to.’ Bolger says, ‘it’s very leafy and green. We’d been looking at a few locations for the past couple of years and the space we’ve secured is amazing.’ Indeed, Bolger is most animated when discussing the new site, which is an impressive 7,500 sq/ft building with 2,000 sq/ft garden and roof terrace. Bolger describes herself as ‘very hands on’ when it

comes to the interior design of the Maggie & Rose hubs, and has worked consistently with former Michaelis Boyd employee, Lou Davies (who now runs the practice Box-9), to see her visions come to life. The new space will be characterised by a rather fabulous helter-skelter running through two levels, plus the quirky classrooms, snug, nursery and workshop spaces that also make up the original location. She describes the new site as ‘a bit more New York warehouse-y’ and even confirms that they have (miraculously) received planning permission to build on the roof terrace. The Maggie & Rose story began 12 years ago when Bolger had her first child and encountered not only the challenge of forming a new community of friends, but

28

Lead Interview_NOV.indd 28

12/11/2012 16:21

also a distinct lack of child-friendly boltholes that ticked all the right boxes. ‘When I had my first child, none of my friends had kids. Not one. So I didn’t know how to meet people’ she admits, ‘I had to traipse around church halls and libraries where 20 or so kids would be packed in. There was no quality moment that you could meet people.’ Though she concurs that much has improved in recent years, her early experiences prompted her to create the kind of hub she so craved for herself, fellow parents and for her children. One that would be stimulating and entertaining for both mother and child... and serve the all-important quality coffee and brownies. ‘It was about finding a place where you felt you belonged and not like a second class citizen, basically, because nobody really put a lot of thought into mothers at the time.’ So what is the Maggie & Rose magic that keeps the little ones entertained and parents forking out a yearly membership fee? For one, the classes and workshops are of a high calibre; with regular visits to the Tate and other major museums, of which Bolger is a huge fan, and a popular cooking class that aspires to teach recipes beyond Rice Krispie cakes and pitta bread pizzas. In Chiswick, the cooking school will run at

weekends and will cater to older children too. Maggie & Rose also provide popular birthday parties, tailor-made to your little one’s every whim. Though there are sadly no stories of outrageous requests when I prompt Bolger to spill the beans, she gives a wonderful insight into the world of spectacular party cakes from Jane Asher (M&S’ humble chocolate caterpillar simply won’t cut the mustard these days), and regales an entertaining story of a near life-size Winnie the Pooh cake and the challenges of cutting into it without traumatising the young guests. Though many formerly adult-centric businesses have cottoned on to all things child-friendly in recent years, Maggie & Rose were really the pioneers. In terms of further expansion, Bolger describes the business as ‘very ambitious’, admitting ‘we’d love to have one wherever they’d take us.’ Bolger and the team have identified further areas to expand into, both in London and further afield. ‘Everyone needs a Maggie & Rose.’ She summarises. Judging by the happy customers – both mother and child – it would be hard to disagree with that. maggieandrose.com 29

CRACKING!

Nothing denotes good taste more than a posh cracker. London confectioner Tom Smith accidentally invented the noisy festive favourite back in 1847, and these gorgeous designs by the company that bares his name are sure to add a dash of decadence to your dining table and impress your guests. Let’s hope the ensuing joke and present will also be of a higher calibre. £15 for 6, 12-14 Arcadia Centre , W5; cargohomeshop.com

NORDIC BUT NICE

The fluid, naturalistic form of Alvar Aalto’s iconic vase has graced the shelves of architectural connoisseurs since it burst onto the interiors scene at the Paris World’s Fair in 1937. It has since undergone many a redesign and colour scheme, but we’re sticking to the simple, original clear-glass style. A timeless piece and a wonderful gift. Cutting Edge

Richmond-based paper sculptor Su Blackwell talks to Nancy Alsop on her fascination with fairy tale worlds Your work is bound up with folklore and fairy tales. What is it about those realms that particularly appeals? It is the magical, and sometimes nonsensical, surreal aspects that appeals and all the talking creatures, tasks and spells, pathways and magic. Also it’s the repetitive element and the fact that they contain basic psychological connotations and symbols. Fairy tales are bound up with the extremes of emotions, of our hopes and fears. They evoke basic systems of belief, spirituality, magic and romance as well as danger, heroism and violence. All of these elements appeal hugely.

Were you always fascinated by these magical tales as a child? As a child, I lost myself in the stories of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden and CS Lewis’ Tales from Narnia. As an adult I began re-reading fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, and was introduced to some rather brutal stories by the Brothers Grimm, which had either been lost on me, or not available to me as a child. What is your favourite fairy tale and why? Recently, I was commissioned to create a piece based on the Italian writer Italo Calvino’s The Baron in the Trees. It is a satirical

You’re currently exhibiting at Anthropologie to coincide with the publication of The Fairy Tale Princess: Seven Classic Stories from The Enchanted Forest. Tell us about the show... I was approached by an editor at Thames and Hudson who had seen my work online. They wanted to work with a paper artist, and thought my style of work would be suitable for illustrating a compilation of traditional fairy tales. Seven fairy tales were shortlisted and I’ve spent almost two years creating over 40 paper sculptures for each of them. Each piece was set up in a studio, lit and photographed. I will be exhibiting 27 of the 40 works for the display at Anthropologie.

social commentary on hierarchy, sex and the pleasure of books that appeals to both children and adults alike. I loved this story. It contains all of the ingredients of a fairy tale.

the RCA in 2003. It began after a trip to Thailand, where I bought a beautiful secondhand book with Thai inscriptions in the margins on the Kao San Road.

Why do you think fairy tales tend to stay with us – more so than most other genres of storytelling – long past childhood? Fairy tales reawaken the rawest sensibilites, dark undercurrents and sexual appeal.

What was your first creation like? My first book-sculpture was The Quiet American. I cut moths from the book with a craft-knife. The piece was inspired by a Chinese legend about two lovers whose souls re-emerge from burnt ashes in the shape of two moths.

What was your own childhood like? My father was strict, and I often thought about escaping. I spent my childhood playing in the woods at the back of our house. I drew maps, made dens, and gave trees names. I imagined the trees were my friends and guardians. I was always making up stories and telling tales.

What is it about paper as a medium that appeals to you? Its strength and fragility. It is a humble material to work with, and malleable in the hand. It’s endlessly fascinating.

Have you always had a strong imagination? Yes, I used to get into trouble at school for daydreaming. The teachers made me sit away from the window, because I would look out and my mind would drift off. The only subject I excelled in was English because I loved stories.

Can you tell me a bit about the process of making the works? I start with a sketch, begin cutting with a scalpel and use glue and card to strengthen the model. The lights are the last thing to put in. The work evolves as I am making.

When did you first create artworks out of books and what lead you to do so? I started this technique after graduating from

Take me through a typical day in the studio... If there is such a thing… not really, but a typical day would be getting into the studio at

7am, replying to emails from the day before, then I start on practical work around 9am, either commercial work or my own projects. In the evening, I generally do some admin, tidy up and leave the studio around 7pm. We drink lots of tea throughout the day. I am lucky, I live close to my studio, just a few minutes’ walk away. Do you ever experience a conflict when you have to cut up a book to create your art? Yes, and when I do, I put the book to one side, and I don’t use it. Where do you find your books typically? In second-hand bookshops and antique markets. Wherever I am, I find the local second-hand bookshop. Which other artists do you find inspirational and why? Annette Messager, Kiki Smith and Paula Rego. They are artists using the fairy tale motif and re-interpreting it. TREE OF LIFE

Christmas is traditionally a time of greed and excess, but those with a more ethically aware mentality should choose their tree from The Christmas Forest, who have seven sites across the city including Ealing and Richmond. They’re London’s largest independent Christmas tree retailers, and plant a tree in Africa for every one of theirs bought through the charity Tree Aid, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. christmasforest.co.uk

Food& Travel

Did you always want to be a chef? No, but really I am not a chef – I am a cook. I didn’t learn as a professional. Instead I was just cooking, cooking, cooking for 50 years.

Carluccio’s are hosting a series of festive foodie events, a seasonal menu and traditional Italian gifts, cakes and biscuits for sale in their Chiswick and Ealing stores. Don’t forget the all important panettone, or really spoil someone with Absolutely’s pick of the bunch, the decadent Sapore Di Tartufo, which includes truffle butter, honey, salt and whole truffles in brine. £22.95, 342-344 Chiswick High Road, W4; carluccios.com

Culinary heroes? Well, at the time, I didn’t bother to look to others. But later on, Pellegrino Artusi [author of The Science of Cooking and the Art of Eating Well] became a great inspiration. He was a writer at the turn of the century, who concentrated on the regional food of Italy. He was not a chef either, but like me he just loved food. Meal that changed your life? I always joke that the meal that changed my life was taken at the breast of my mother! I do remember a journey from Rome to Tuscany with a few others. We were on a motorway, it was a really hot day and we were all suffering. There were no cafés, but we came across a country house and asked for some water. We sat in the shade and the woman brought out a big bowl of cheese, bread, prosciutto and fruit. It was really a biblical meal, particularly because she didn’t want any money for it. What has been the proudest moment of your career so far? I think it was writing my biography. You start to see that what you have done remains. My food philosophy has not changed, which is also because Italian food is not changeable, as it has its roots laid down over centuries. I am proud that I have had 50 years of cooking without being influenced by any other cuisines. Top three ingredients you like to use? Pasta, olive oil, basil and tomato. That is four, but with these you can make very simple, delicious food.

Food DPS_dec.indd 47

What dish do you like to knock up for a quick supper? Anything that is in the fridge. For instance, the other day, I had some salmon, and in the fridge there was some fennel. I added water to soften the fennel, and used some garlic. I then cooked some pasta and added little delicious slivers of wonderful smoked salmon and Parma ham. I didn’t know that Parma ham and salmon could be so delicious together, but it was fantastic. What is the best advice you have ever been given? What I have learnt is that it’s best not to complicate things, obviously to use the best ingredients and never to overwork things. It is all about authenticity and purity. Guilty food pleasure? I am like a pregnant woman. OK, I don’t want banana on pizza or anything like that, but I like very much the trio of tinned borlotti beans, cannellini beans and chickpeas. Obviously fresh ones are best, but I also like the tinned ones made in to a salad with tuna and onions.

What’s been your biggest kitchen disaster? I remember mentally creating a recipe for a tart using avocado with eggs and mascarpone. So I tried it in the Covent Garden restaurant, and it was total yuck. Really disgusting. Where do you go to eat in London when you’re not working? I don’t go out so much, but when I do, I like La Famiglia. I also like to eat dim sum for lunch, so I go to New World in Soho – the food is very fresh and it’s full of Chinese people, so you know it’s authentic. I like Royal China too, but I really don’t like going out too much, but naturally I go to a lot of my own restaurants, to check that the food is still good. 342-344 Chiswick High Road, W4, 020 8995 8073; carluccios.com Download Antonio Carluccio’s iPad app ‘Antonio Carluccio’s Simple Cooking’ at itunes.apple.com dabhandmedia.com

Ealing’s Southeast Asian gem reviewed

T

he most memorable meals are often the ones outside of the restaurant walls. They’re the barrage of flavours in a Marrakech square, or a hot paper bag of sugary doughnuts on Brighton beach. Whilst the street food revolution isn’t exactly, well, revolutionary, it has only recently become a part of the contemporary British food scene. Along with the influx of street food restaurants like Wahaca and Yalla Yalla, Tuk Cho (the name being a culmination of the tuk-tuk rickshaws and the Vietnamese word for market) opened on Ealing Broadway in December 2011. The restaurant is a laid back affair with stripped-back interior design and industrial lighting. Having quickly established a legion of fans through their authentic menu of Southeast Asian cuisine, the winter season introduces Cambodian and Laotian dishes such as spicy sausage Sai Gog and Semlaw Tiah – a duck and lime soup. For mains we sample the Japanese Yasai Katsu curry and Fish Amok; Cambodia’s national dish of river fish, squid, prawns, chilli and coriander. We also share a couple of ‘street snacks’; Vietnamese vermicelli rolls and Rau Xao Maggi – a simple, flavoursome dish of squash, lemongrass and bean sprouts in black bean sauce. The tables are set (or rather, loaded) with enough chilli sauce, oil and Nanami Togarashi (Japanese chilli flakes) to satisfy the most ardent of spice seekers.Tuk Cho have succeeded in capturing the colourful spirit of Asia whilst maintaining a characteristic lack of pretension. Perfectly reflecting their street food roots. EO 28 - 30 New Broadway, W5; tukcho.co.uk

Top of the class Liam Doyle puts students to the test at Pillars, the University of West London’s award-winning training restaurant

he phrase ‘student fare’ conjures up images of half eaten takeaways and large helpings of pasta five days a week. So, the idea of eating at a restaurant staffed by students, both in the kitchen and front-of-house might seem a little worrying. Thankfully, Pillars, in the University of West London, is not your typical student grub. This is the training restaurant for students, both in Hospitality & Tourism courses and those training to be the next generation’s top chefs. Encouragingly for all concerned, it’s excellent. It’s freezing cold in Ealing, and my partner and I are provided with a menu of simple yet elegant choices to warm us on this wintery evening. Ensconced within a corner of the main university building, one might not expect to find themselves eating in a classily decorated restaurant complete with a talented pianist entertaining as you dine, yet no corners have been cut in making

this a complete dining experience for all concerned. My starter is the roast pumpkin soup, and is perfect for the night – warming and flavoursome. My partner raves about her seared scallop with parsnip purée, finding it holding rank with some of the best scallops she’s ever had. We’re then provided with a shot glass worth of pea soup, a neat touch that goes down smoothly. My partner takes the vegetarian option of aubergines alla parmigiana for her main. Her fears that it might be the afterthought of the night are completely assuaged, as thought, detail and genuine care have gone into this innovative dish, which is topped off with a perfect poached egg. My sirloin of beef is as all beef should be – red, tender and beautifully cooked. The horseradish mash is a real treat, the bitterness of the horseradish

remaining subtly likeable as opposed to overwhelming, complementing the dish, rather than taking control of it, and the same can be said for the caper and raisin purée. To round off the evening, I enjoy three small yet intense bites of fruity, spicy carrot cake. My partner’s apple strudel is in a similar vein, the cinnamon and apple combining perfectly. Thought and care are intangible to the menu we’ve been provided, and we would leave forgetting the unique aspect of this excellent night’s dining but for one fact – this is the most affordable luxury cuisine could ever get. A three course menu of this quality for £15.95 is astonishing. The future is very bright indeed at Pillars. To make a reservation, email pillars@uwl. ac.uk or call 020 8231 2200; uwl.ac.uk/pillars

rimary school teacher Jane Dowrick wanted to look her best for her son’s wedding. Being a keen dancer, she was looking forward to stepping out onto the dance floor. But she faced a problem. As Jane explains, “I can’t wear high heels for very long because I suffer from back and hip pain. To make matters worse I also have a bunion.” But she was determined to have a good time, so decided to splash out on a new outfit for the day and a cocktail dress for the evening. However, she was still unsure what shoes she

The Scarlet Hotel, Cornwall

THE HOTEL The Scarlet is an exceedingly modern hotel, but it’s a smart, clever, luxurious and eco-friendly one too. There are surprises in every corner within this ultra-sleek, Ayurvedic-scented modern construct which sits on a ridge just above the splendid and vast Mawgan Porth. Sustainability is key at the Scarlet, but that doesn’t rob the hotel of its character, after all, it’s the little touches that one notices first: instead of a reception desk, friendly staff come to find incoming guests with pots of tea, biscuits and only one form to fill and sign, while the hotel’s dog is available to take for walks on the beautiful beach below. Split over four floors, the Ayurvedic spa’s soothing aromas waft through the various sections of the hotel, including the restaurant, rooms, the library and the ultra-relaxing Retreat upstairs. And if the serene interior isn’t enough for you, Mawgan Porth awaits below with its host of walkers, kite-flying children and daredevils who do daily battle with the north coast’s challenging waves. Oh and dogs are very welcome to stay on the premises. THE BEDROOM With a door-less, curtain-less shower carved out from the sandstone bedroom wall and its equally pleasing and spacious freestanding bath lying just at the end of an oversized bed, rooms at The Scarlet immediately impress with their original flair. The rooms are all different, but they all share inviting on-trend individuality. In mine, the bath looked out onto a decked and roomy courtyard, while a modern staircase beside the open shower led up to a lighthouse-like turret, from where splendid views of the vast beach below were enjoyed on the padded cushions and lounge area. The sustainability theme continues into the bedrooms, where hot water is warmed by a biomass boiler which burns on wood chips, while all the products are natural.

with fresh berries in the summer and hearty grouse and red cabbage in the autumn

THE RESTAURANT Before one’s even tasted the freshly-caught, elegantly-presented Cornish grub served up at The Scarlet’s restaurant, it’s hard not to fall for the views which lead off the tall glass windows overlooking Mawgan Porth. But back to the food, chef Tom Hunter goes by the seasons, meaning that while fish is constantly on the menu, as are a range of delicious cuts of meat and vegetarian options, too, all side-dishes, salads and components of the restaurant’s main meals are characterised by the freshest and most recently-picked natural wonders growing all around The Scarlet. Expect puddings laced

THE SPA A whole host of treatments (all carried out with The Scarlet’s own range of Ayurvedic products, of course) await the newcomer: from facials administered with wild-crafted herbs and hot steamed poultices, to a two-person rhassoul (a steam and mud-like Hammam). To spoil further, there are yoga, meditation and mother and baby classes, including the chance to use both the Spa’s un-chlorinated indoor swimming pool and reed-filtered natural clifftop outdoor pool, whose nearby hot tubs provide the perfect spot from which to storm and cloud-gaze. A passage to India From pigeons to people, Christena Appleyard explores the exotic state of Rajasthan

A

solitary fat pigeon pecks around for snacks in the brilliant sun and deep shadows of the ancient inner courtyard of Ganesh in a cavernous warehouse shop, the ‘Land of the Kings’, or in other words, the north-western Indian region of Rajasthan. Pigeons are sacred to Hindus which means they are protected and fed. To me, they have always seemed pretty pointless birds. Looking down from the alcove window seat on the second floor, I watch the fat one flitting hopefully around the restored beauty of the 17th-century cantilevered white stone balconies. The opportunities for sightseeing in India fall into two distinct categories: the obviously

spectacular, like the Red Fort in Delhi and the incidentally spectacular, like the wedding processions of shy brides and proud grooms riding their decorated horses through the remote rural villages. And, of course, there is the pigeon in the courtyard. One floor up, my companions are finding great treasures among the best selection of kaftans in Rajasthan. They are encouraged by the prices and the fact that Sarah Burton, head honcho at Alexander McQueen, sacrosanct after her star turn at the royal wedding last year, was a customer here a few days earlier. Later on that day, I was shopping in Andraab, one of Udaipur’s most exclusive boutiques where I succumbed to the beauty of a finely woven scarlet cashmere pashmina. But it seemingly wasn’t a discovery I could

merit myself with, after all, it wasn’t long until I was told that the shop was a favourite of Judi Dench. The lake city of Udaipur is a short flight from the capital Delhi, where our experience of new India began. The sun was going down and we were thankful for the damp westerly wind that cooled us as we made our way down the long avenue of one of the city’s many grand parks and leads to the cremation site of Mahatma Ghandi. This vast, flat memorial stone is the size of a small football pitch and is decorated by a single eternal flame. But the lack of ornament only adds to its power. It is singularly moving to watch the mostly Indian visitors stop to compose themselves before placing their tribute flowers on the marble edifice.

Leela Palace, Delhi The chimneys of a grim looking coal power station rise into the sky above the park’s tree line and in the near distance a silent man kneels on the grass facing Mecca, lost in prayer. This sacred stillness is disturbed by the roar of the insane traffic on the nearby road. The endless 24/7 competition of car horns, spluttering rickshaws and speeding motor scooters is the mash-up that is the soundtrack of the new India. It was time to adjourn for a sundown drink in the shameless glamour of the Library Bar in the Leela Palace Hotel, where the signature cocktail involves vodka and, believe it or not, a special machine that infuses the drink with cigar smoke. This hotel and its sister hotel in Udaipur are a clever mix of the familiar and the exotic so the nervous traveller feels confident and the more adventurous guest doesn’t feel that they are missing out on authenticity. The rooms have extravagant lighting menus and are decorated with luxury textiles and original, contemporary Indian art. Personal butlers are available for everyone, but there is a free Rolls Royce Phantom with the top suite. The food is a high point in both hotels but the jewel in the crown in Delhi is the classical Indian cuisine of the Jamavar and a cookery lesson with their head chef is a good alternative to shopping, particularly as shopping in the Old Delhi market means perching precariously on bicycle rickshaws and becoming part of the crazy traffic system. Before setting off for Udaipur we spend some time in the ancient tranquility of Qutub Minar, a tomb built in 1199 and a Unesco World Heritage site which is the one to experience in Delhi if you only have time for one monument.

‘You gotta love my Banynan tree’ says Reggie Sing, our handsome host, a cousin of the Maharajah of Jodhpur and a larger than life throw back to the last days of the Raj. We are sitting at a massive table in the garden laden with a feast and being waited on by men wearing army uniforms and saffron festival turbans. It is a scene straight from a Bollywood movie and we are grateful for the shade of Reggie’s Banynan tree as we have already had two large Pimm’s which Reggie himself mixes.

We watched the sun set over the fairy tale Udaipur City Palace But I wouldn’t advise drinking two large Pimm’s before visiting the extraordinary spectacle of the Adinatha Jain Temple at Ranakpur because it makes it a tad more difficult to negotiate the 24 pillared halls and to focus on the extravagant detail of the 1444 marble pillars. But this is an experience of old India which is simply unmissable. We were particularly lucky to be travelling in the wedding season, when young brides dressed in red saris walk in giggling gangs to the local village to make their wedding purchases. We also came across dashing grooms riding proudly on decorated horses behind processions of local musicians and odd looking karaoke vans blasting out Bollywood hits.

Back at Leela Palace, on the shores of the romantic Lake Pichola in time to watch the sun set over the fairy tale Udaipur City Palace, I thought, frankly, it doesn’t get much better than this, until my iPad suddenly packs up. Reception send someone up immediately – a charming young chap with a degree in IT – to fix the iPad while I stand on the balcony and watch another young man dressed in the traditional long kuta shirt waving a flag and chasing pigeons in the grounds of a neighbouring hotel. I have been told these professional pigeon chasers are employed to save the buildings from the pigeon droppings because it is against Hinduism to put spikes on the buildings as they may injure the birds. My cyber-butler and the pigeon chaser are young men of a similar age doing their very different jobs, but with a sense of harmony. The pigeon chaser is confidently preserving the best of ancient India and the cyber butler shaping a part of India’s confident future. Suddenly, a couple of these fat, pointless birds land on my balcony railings and I find myself thinking that they are actually quite pretty... A 7 night trip to Delhi and Udaipur costs from £2,350 per person with 2 nights at The Leela Palace New Delhi and 5 nights at The Leela Palace Udaipur, based on 2 adults sharing, including return economy class flights and transfers. For bookings and further information please visit www.abercrombiekent.co.uk or call 0845 618 2214 For further information on The Leela hotels please visit www.theleela.com

L O V E Martin Miller knows a thing or two about Love. He should, he’s been married three times. “Love conquers all,” he’ll tell you. But can love overcome Obsession? Tame Madness? Martin thinks so. He’s been making his gin that way since 1999. Marrying his obsession with crafting the perfect English Gin to the inspired Madness of blending it to strength using the gentle magic of pure Icelandic spring water. So here’s proof, if you need it, that there’s always some Madness in Love, but also some reason in Madness.

TALEON IMPERIAL HOTEL, ST. PETERSBURG It may possibly be a bad thing that once you arrive at the Taleon Imperial Hotel you find it difficult to leave. Fortunately for those who do manage to haul themselves out of the massive marble-covered ensuite jacuzzi, or the top floor spa (where you can look out over the the city’s roofs) – there is a long list of sights just a stone’s throw away. The hotel is at the heart of where the Moika River and the Nevsky Prospect (St Petersburg’s main vein) intersect. And if a five-minute walk to the State Hermitage Museum, Winter Palace, Palace Square, Kazan Cathedral, and all the many exclusive shops seem a little strenuous; the concierge can organise for a water taxi, or a speed boat in the summer to pick you up at the quay, just outside the front of the hotel. If, for some reason, you’re feeling lethargic from Imperial Palaces and great works of art and architecture and you need a night in, the hotel has three restaurants; the gourmet Taleon restaurant, the Russian cuisine restaurant Victoria and Gastro bar Griboedov. You can try both Russian delicacies and continental cuisine if you’re feeling a little over-borsched. The bar staff at the Griboedov make a mean cocktail – do not be afraid to ask for a White Russian.

After you’re suitably full and sleepy, and perhaps after having one of the hotel’s rare cognacs, you can retire to one of 89 rooms, which are all unique, with a mixture of old splendor and décor and modern technology. So as well as knowing that no-one else in the hotel has an identical room, there is also a 24-hour butler service and housekeeping. Whether it’s a week or a weekend, the general consensus is that you feel as if you’ve stayed in a palace, and that’s not exactly wrong. The Taleon is the only hotel in St Petersburg that is a restored Palace from the Tsarist era. Luckily you can experience all the perks of the Tsars minus the deposing and revolution. One-of-a-Kind stays at the Taleon Imperial Hotel start from £2,000 with a two night stay for two in a superior suite, and including a tour of Pavlovsk, Troika horse riding, a Russian banya experience, tickets to the Hermitage Museum and dinner at the Taleon, as well as a history tour of the hotel. We travelled as a guest of The Taleon Imperial Hotel (www.lhw.com/taleon) and British Airways (www.ba.com). VILLA MAGNA, MADRID There’s endless negativity about Spain’s future these days and no message bar economic gloom seems to emanate from its fine capital. But what about the reality that Madrid continues to beat the effervescent drum that for decades has meant this fountain-laden, gastronomic hot bed of festivals, fiestas, bullfights and fervent national identity, is considered one of the most popular cities of the world? Villa Magna is by far the city’s most luxurious hotel and is testament to the committed interest the Spanish still have with luxury. A recent renovation has seen Villa Magna stay true to its classic style, with abundant black onyx and white marble, but it contrasts successfully with a striking collection of contemporary art. Spoilt as you are on the streets for food, the hotel offers four places for a heady dose of exquisite cuisine, though the Restaurant Villa Magna, where Chef Manual Gutierrez boasts outstanding culinary skill, is this hotel’s gastronomic pièce de résistance. The hotel is situated a moment’s walk from the city’s celebrated Art Triangle, but for those more sporty, the Real Madrid Bernabeu stadium isn’t far in the other direction. But perhaps you’ll never want to leave Villa Magna’s walls, especially when you learn that the Real and Royal suites, or should we say, small apartments, come equipped with sumptuous Turkish baths and private terraces which look out over what continues to be one of Europe’s most thrilling cities. Rates for Hotel Villa Magna start from £233 (EUR 290) per room per night, based on two sharing. For bookings and further information please visit www.hotelvillamagna.com or call +34 915 871 234.

REGINA BAGLIONI, ROME

REGINA BAGLIONI, ROME

With its evocative combination of ancient ruins, Renaissance art, historic churches and statue-laden piazzas, it’s easy to see why the Eternal City remains so enduringly beguiling. Plump for a stay at the Regina Hotel Baglioni, ideally located for exploring the nearby Spanish Steps, the gardens of the Villa Borghese and the glamorous stores on Via Condotti. Once a royal palace, the Baglioni is now a well-established grande dame with a hint of art deco-infused elegance – a perfect antidote to the city’s bustling streets. Under the expert direction of the hotel’s friendly concierge, you’ll discover a plethora of local hidden gems, from affordable trattorie to well-loved gelaterie. Marvel at the Sistine Chapel courtesy of a ‘skip-the-line’ early morning tour of the Vatican, where you’ll avoid lengthy queues and benefit from the expertise of well-informed guides, who’ll bring the works of Raphael and Michelangelo to life before your eyes. Stroll across the River Tiber to explore the cobbled streets of Trastevere, wander through the food market at Campo de’ Fiori and pause for a pick-me-up at Caffè Greco, one of the city’s oldest pit-stops. And with the Pantheon and the Coliseum providing a spectacular backdrop to this constantly evolving city, you’ll find yourself plotting a return tour within moments of your arrival. Skip the Line Vatican Museums Small-Group Tour, including Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica, from £69.61p pp, Viator (www.viator.com). Regina Hotel Baglioni, Rome (00 39 06 421111, www.baglionihotels.com) offers rooms from £236 per room, per night, based on two adults sharing. In their own words Gary Sinton, Director, Sinton Andrews

trangely I fell into estate agency almost by accident and have never looked back or regretted it for a moment. I started out as a junior, with a then large firm with offices throughout West London and Bucks, which was sadly swallowed up in the 1980s. The partner in charge of the office was a proper old fashioned estate agent who instilled a deep sense of professionalism and values in me that I still adhere to and protect today after running my own business for over 30 years. I came into the profession straight from school during the political madness of the early 1970s. Those were the challenging days of working with a camping gas lamp on my desk due to the three day week, but life carried on. Today, the slightest thing sends everything out of kilter. I have seen a quantum leap in changes in the market and have worked my way through numerous slumps and recessions as well as some mad and unsustainable highs. All these things have helped me build up an in-depth understanding of estate agency, but of course, I still learn something new every day and nothing ever surprises me. I love working in Ealing. Ealing historically was, and in my eyes, still is, the Queen of the Suburbs. We have such a fantastic and varied housing stock, plus we have acres of open parkland and some highly regarded state and private schools that act as magnets. Ealing has always been a conservative (please note the small c) suburb and over the years has not been affected by spiralling prices either up or down. With Crossrail now firmly on

the horizon, Ealing will begin to look like excellent value and I am expecting significant price rises to reflect this. Our reputation has been built on giving good, old fashioned honest advice without “gilding the lily” to gain business. As a result, we have been the big fish in this pond for many years with clients coming back time and time again, safe in the knowledge that we never allow our standards to drop. It is very likely that they will deal with the same person they dealt with a decade earlier as my staff rarely see the grass as being greener elsewhere and I like to think that I have given them the same training I had. Technology has brought many changes to every profession but when you are in a people business like ours then understanding your market is key. As I see it, my job is not to sell houses, but to find people their new home, listen to what they want and then endeavour to meet their needs. These days we are the main sponsor of Hanwell Town Football Club, which gives us great pleasure. If you are looking to watch a local team currently doing well, then we strongly urge you to try Hanwell. You will be given a warm welcome at the ground and in the clubhouse, and if you have a youngster looking to join a local team, know that they are always on the lookout for new young players for their myriad of teams of all ages.

RENTAL RISES: GRAEME YOUNG, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR & LETTINGS MANAGER, MARSH & PARSONS In recent weeks, the market in W6, W12 and W14 has been increasingly buoyant as we draw towards the end of the year. December traditionally brings a trend of motivated tenants, albeit in lower numbers, looking to secure property as quickly as possible prior to the Christmas holidays, where cold nights, shopping and socialising limits the ease of searching. In comparison to this time last year, prices appear to have held steadily with marginal increases. The fast moving area of the market has been dominated by one and two bedroom flats, which earlier this year saturated the market. Two bedroom garden flats around the £400-£500 per week range are exceptionally popular, especially in W12 where the £ per square/foot value offers better quality compared to neighbouring W6 and W14. Furthermore, we have also seen an increase in the amount of family houses becoming available, which offer value for this time of year, as landlord’s are eager to avoid vacancy periods throughout Christmas. marshandparsons.co.uk

DEREK FLETCHER, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, JOHN D WOOD & CO. The autumn has proved a very busy time in the Chiswick property market for us at John D Wood & Co, with continuing strong demand from buyers moving west from more central London areas. Chiswick, with its excellent state and private schools is proving a real magnet for buyers with demand for large family houses. Despite the rise in ‘transaction’ costs, with stamp duty at 7 per cent for properties over £2,000,000, we have experienced one of our busiest years. I am confident we are seeing the beginnings of the green shoots of recovery and are looking forward to an even more successful 2013. johndwood.co.uk

HAMPTONS CHISWICK IS ON THE MOVE

Hamptons Chiswick is delighted to announce that it has relocated its award-winning Sales & Lettings office to 48 Turnham Green Terrace. This is another exciting chapter for the Chiswick office, which opened just over seven years ago. Since then, the office has grown in reputation and strength, with 100 per cent of clients and applicants in the last quarter stating that they would use us again and recommend us to friends and family. The office move will further enhance Hamptons International’s brand and local exposure. Adrian Johnson, Sales Manager at Hamptons Chiswick, commented on the move: ‘the Terrace is a sought after location for any local business and we are thrilled to be moving to this buzzing, boutique shopping area. While our Chiswick office is already well established in the area, we are looking forward to integrating ourselves further into the local community and developing close links with other local businesses and people.’ 48 Turnham Green Terrace, W4, 020 8987 8444

NEW LAUNCH It is an exciting time to be launching the Philip Wooller estate agency. Having lived and worked around the Askew Road for 20 years, I have gained a wealth of experience with some highly respected agencies and am thrilled to be part of the changes happening in the area. I believe that the best estate agents live in the communities they serve and are able to respond immediately to what their clients want. I will be joined by Jen Christodoulou who has the same local knowledge and shares my ambition to provide a friendly, approachable alternative to our clients. Now every new launch needs a great launch offer, and we’d be delighted to talk to you about ours. Alternatively take a look at our website to find out more about us. philipwooller.com, 020 8811 2929

STRENGTH IN SMALL NUMBERS, THE POWER OF SMALL BUSINESSES Over 90 of businesses in Europe are small; forming the life blood of our economy, creating employment, driving innovation and supporting local communities. The most successful differentiate themselves from their larger competitors by creating a niche, and Fitz-Gibbon is one local firm that has done just that by focusing on its core market of mid and upper tier residential lettings for over 25 years. All of this is made possible by superior staff training and a hands-on approach where management and the company’s owners listen to clients, develop and deliver the right products and provide a highly personal service. These traits are typical of any successful small

businesses and the Harvard Business Review reveals why staff in your local independent establishment are so much ‘happier’. They work closely with the owners and are motivated by high levels of interpersonal support, have clear goals, increased well-being and enhanced motivation. In short, they ‘own the vision’ and for clients and customers there’s the added pleasure of walking in and being known by name. ‘Good service and versatility are crucial in business but staff in larger companies are often restricted by policies they have no control over. At independent agencies like ours, decisions are made quickly, there is accountability and feedback, acted upon without delay. We facilitate innovation, and our furnishings, buy-to-let investment and property management services are just three areas which evolved to meet client’s needs’, explains Gerald Fitz-Gibbon, Director of FitzGibbon. ‘Every staff member is important in a small business and understands the need to go that extra mile.’ Operating within micro markets, local businesses can deliver more

because staff live and work in the area so have in-depth knowledge. Furthermore they are appreciated for who they are and that is very different from being merely acknowledged for delivering targets or meeting bottom line requirements. ‘In recent years, global giants have dominated the high street, but consumers are getting bored of impersonal attitudes and the monopolisation of industries’ adds Gerald. ‘Firms which support their community, and pour time and money into local people, businesses and charities will always be the best neighbours - and can influence industry on a national level too’. Gerald Fitz-Gibbon and family have lived in Chiswick, Kew and for the past 17 years in St Margarets. Gerald is a founding director of Fitz-Gibbon with a keen interest in all aspects of residential property management, letting and investment opportunities. Beyond Fitz-Gibbon, Gerald runs a successful property investment business in the North West with a focus on the social housing sector. Gerald Fitz-Gibbon fitzgibbon.co.uk

An exceptional five bedroom family home Hammersmith Grove, W6 £3,000,000

FH

A fantastic, end of terrace Victorian house, providing over 3,950 sq ft of accommodation over five floors. The house has recently been meticulously refurbished throughout with great attention to detail.

The second floor has two generous double bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms, whilst the third floor has two double bedrooms and a family shower room.

Behind the classical Victorian façade lies a modern family house providing greater than average width and beautifully proportioned rooms, excellent natural light and an overall sense of space.

The house benefits from cloakrooms on the lower and raised ground floors, a large under pavement vault which makes an ideal wine cellar room and built in wardrobes in most of the bedrooms.

Accommodation consists of a dual aspect reception room overlooking the front and rear gardens. On the lower ground floor there is a large kitchen/dining room with French doors on to the rear garden.

The split level garden is east facing and has been landscaped with a patio to the rear of the house with steps up to a lawned area with a hard standing for a large family car to the rear accessed via electronically controlled double gates from Astrop Terrace. There are outside taps, outside power points and lighting.

The master bedroom provides a wonderful en-suite bathroom and separate dressing room. This floor also provides a study/nursery.

KFH CHRISTMAS COMPETITION

A competition was held at Belmont Primary School in Chiswick, W4, to design a poster for the Enchanted Christmas Fair. Two winners were chosen, Larry in Year 1 and Mehr in Year 3, and their designs now adorn the front and back of all Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward’s sponsorship boards erected in the area to promote the event. Well done to Larry and Mehr for your lovely Christmas drawings! KFH wish the community of Belmont Primary School a wonderful Christmas Fair. kfh.co.uk

CHRISTMAS ART COMPETITION: This holiday season we are delighted to have Notting Hill Preparatory School and St. Barnabus & St Philip’s Church of England Primary School participate in our 2012 Christmas Art Competition. The entire student body from both schools from Reception to Year 7 created very colourful and fun Christmas-themed drawings. The standard was so high, it was incredibly difficult to pick a winner! A winner from each grade will be featured in our 2012 BLM Christmas card. bectivelesliemarsh.co.uk

WINNERS:

Cheyenna – Year 3 at St. Barnabus & St Philip’s Church of England Primary School

Ruby – Year 1 at Notting Hill Preparatory School

Best kept secret – Naama on the Uxbridge Road is surely the best Lebanese butcher and deli in west London. With charming staff, great fresh meat (try the lamb chops), wonderful, freshly made shawarma and homemade Lebanese styled pizza, Naama is definitely worth a visit. Use them for your parties as well. Finest cocktail – The K West Bar at K West Hotel & Spa is great for a cocktail or three to kick off the night. A popular hang out for recording artists and their teams, you may well catch a glimpse of One Direction over your martini or caipirinha. And if the music isn’t to your taste, why not treat yourself to an evening spa treatment instead! Stylish boutique – Why choose one boutique when you can choose from a whole plethora of delights at Westfield? You say ‘designer outlet’, I say splitting hairs. From Miu Miu to Kurt Geiger there is plenty of pleasure to be had. A lost hour – Hard to think of a single lost hour when you look at the inspiring array of things happening at the ever uplifting Riverside Studios. You can start your evening with a wander down the river ending up at the Studios for theatre, cinema, an exhibition or some music and dinner. An exceptional property – If you’re looking for glamour, we have the most beautiful house on Aldensley Road that is absolutely worth viewing. The house, refurbished throughout by an interior designer, is located on south side of the road and has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a patio garden with pizza oven. £1,450,000 020 7371 4171; finlaybrewer.co.uk
