ill life ever be the same again? It’s been a real joy to see our local shops, restaurants and pubs start to open up again over the past month, but there’s no escaping things are a little different. People are still on edge, understandably, and talk remains in the press and from government sources that another wave is inevitable – but surely now is the time to sit up, take note and work out how we live with this dreadful virus. For now we have to work with the situation and many local businesses are. Royal Ascot may still be a month away, and situations could change, but at the time of writing they will be admitting some members of the public to enjoy this stand out fixture on the calendar – so we best start thinking about our summer look. Luckily we have a handy style guide, which starts on page 40. Elsewhere, Kirsten O’Brien, Mimi Harker, and the wonderful people behind businesses like Two Spoons and Ethereal London, all let us into what life has been like for them since March 2020. What’s clear is that everyone is ready to tackle whatever lies ahead.

CULTURE • INTERVIEW
the
CALM chameleon
Buckle up as we take you on a whistle stop tour of the everchanging career of Berkshire local Kirsten O’Brien – just be careful if she offers you a sandwich… By MARK KEBBLE
P
reparing to interview Kirsten O’Brien, I literally have no idea where to start. There’s her very successful career as a kids’ TV presenter, which started a quarter of a century ago; the move into documentaries, including a very revealing look at what kids’ TV presenters tend to do to shake off their public image; a successful standup show; winning The Weakest Link; and even holding two Guinness World Records involving socks and toes. Taking a deep breath, I decide to dive in feet first. “Hello Berkshire!” exclaims O’Brien excitedly when she answers my call. Right from the off her enthusiasm is catching, particularly when she explains that she has answered on a vintage phone. “It rings like an old phone, so all the kids run to it [when someone calls]. It has brought a bit of lockdown joy,” she laughs. If you are feeling a little down in the dumps, find an hour to speak to mum-
of-three O’Brien – but considering she started out presenting to kids, her energetic approach to life isn’t a surprise. “I know Phillip Schofield said that gig is the best years of your life,” she says when I ask about if the enthusiasm comes naturally. “It was a young environment, it was live tele and we had quite a lot of freedom. It was a ball of a job. I got sent off to interview George Clooney, I could ride around the BBC Studios in the Noddy car… I mean, who doesn’t want to do that? There was a lot of joy in the job.” Looking at O’Brien’s work in kids’ TV, it’s almost like a career within a career. She started out in the legendary (for those of a certain age) Broom Cupboard with Otis the Aardvark, before going on to front the likes of Smile, Springwatch Trackers, Totally Doctor Who, Short Change, and popular art show Smart. Which, naturally, led to a stand-up show called Confessions of a Children’s TV Presenter. “It seemed like the natural thing to do with my comedy,” she explains. “When
I started doing stand-up, I was very anecdotal. Unsurprisingly, my persona was not dour like Jack Dee and I was like a giddy lamb on stage, so it seemed the natural thing to write a kids’ TV presenter show. It challenged perceptions. I remember I’d come off stage in a club after having used some mild, low key swear words, but because everyone’s perception of me was as a kids’ TV presenter, people couldn’t believe I had said things like that. People went on after me and said much worse things, but because of this perception I was a smiley kids’ TV presenter… The stand-up was a chance to mess with people’s minds and evolve myself.” Those people may have also been a little stunned after seeing O’Brien’s move into documentary making with Kirsten’s Topless Ambition. “I thought about what matters to me, what am I interested in, and I came up with this notion of a right of passage for female kids’ TV presenters feeling the need to do [racy shoots with] these lads’ mags, so that was my first authored documentary A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

and I am really proud of it as it was a very personal piece. In kids’ TV you are really ramping up your personality, it’s a joy and full of brightness. Then I did Topless Ambition and I cried in it, so I was exposing myself more than I ever had before – and quite specifically sometimes as well!” O’Brien appears to have a real hunger to try out new things, and her post-kids’ TV career varies wildly. She has become the leading face fronting Britain’s Most Embarrassing Parents, presented Botox Britain: Your Life In Their Hands and Eastenders Live: The Aftermath, and travelled the globe with Will Mellor for the World’s Toughest Driving Test, where she is now the proud owner of a tank driving licence. She has also won The Weakest Link – “That’s a real highlight” – and has two Guinness World Records to her name. “One was the number of socks on one foot, the other was the number of taps in a minute when doing tap dancing,” she says nonchalantly, as if these are everyday occurrences. “My brother and I grew up trying to do something like how many Jacob’s crackers you can eat, so I wanted a record – it was on my bucket list. I was doing a radio show at the time called The Big Toe Radio Show, so I was looking for foot-related records. Another one I attempted and failed was making a sandwich with your feet. I practiced quite a lot at home, it’s quite elaborate, but that was one that went wrong!” Home has been Berkshire for nearly a decade, although things did not get off to a good start when she extracted herself from her London flat. “We moved out of Camden just before my eldest was one,” she recalls. “I was a bit panicked about leaving London to be honest, so initially it was just a rent as I was too terrified to commit. We moved a

week before my son’s first birthday and two weeks before Christmas, so it was absolutely insane. We rocked up to this property we were renting and the estate agent messaged to say, ‘Bad news, there’s been a power cut, so the house is freezing’. So the first thing I had to do was buy logs from a local garden centre to get a fire going. There I am with an almost one-year-old baby having been persuaded to leave London and my worst fears had been realised: there’s no heating and I can’t even get a hot meal on the go for my child… It was a bit of a baptism of fire!” It is fair to say things have improved since then and O’Brien recounts the joy of now being able to do voiceover recordings in her shed. The anecdotes, I feel, could keep coming, but her latest venture is all about getting others to recount their stories. “Sixteen Summers is a podcast I have been working on whilst we have been in lockdown,” she explains. “It’s a very simple premise: if you had to choose between the childhood you had or the one you are giving your children, which would you pick? So far we have Will Mellor, another local lad Steve Backshall, Jason Manford, [last month’s cover star] Melinda Messenger… We will keep it going.” The future, it seems, looks like being just as eclectic for Kirsten O’Brien.

M
imi Harker OBE is a community champion based in Amersham, who works in public office with the aim of improving the lives of those in her community. On top of this, she has a weekly radio show and has recently launched Buckinghamshire’s BAME Network. In her own words, here are three key campaigns she helped instigate:
The Save Our Grammar Schools for Local Children Campaign This started when I was contacted by a Year 4 mum who received a letter from her son’s school stating that children from Denham, Iver and Gerrards Cross would have priority access to the Challoner’s schools and Chesham Grammar over local children who had passed their 11+. The worst affected were children from Missenden and Prestwood. The parents were angry, so I led the campaign to stop this from happening, and we were successful.

This service was about to be axed as a result of cutbacks. In one day, I received over 400 emails about this. This service was important, especially for local mums and parents. It enabled them to drop their kids at childcare and then catch the train to get to London in time to start work. The service was saved as I promised to drop my challenges to the other cuts to save that one train. It was too important for families in my local area.
The 12A cinema classification
This happened because my six-year-old son was absolutely besotted by Spiderman, and when the film was finally released, it was rated a 12. So, I went to see it without him and couldn’t find any reason for this rating. I collected information via questionnaires outside cinemas and sent all my findings to the British Film Board and they came back to me and said they agreed with my findings and that they would create the 12A so that someone under the age of 12 could see the film if accompanied by an adult.

“People will pull together in a time of crisis and we have seen that during the last 12 months”
THE VIEW TO THE ALLOTMENT GATE AT CHILTERN OPEN AIR MUSEUM
Q What initially ignited the fire within you to become a community activist? A We moved to a lovely family home just in time for the arrival of baby number two. All was going well until one day a knock on the door changed everything. A housing development was starting behind us and the builders wanted a piece of land that our shed stood on. I was not going to let that happen. This initiated my journey on the road to local politics. Unbeknownst to me, this would catapult me into the public eye via a campaign based on restrictive covenants – 24 households signed up for the campaign and it ended up in the High Courts of Justice where we not only won,
but we also changed land laws and had all our costs awarded to us. It was incredible. Q How long have you lived in Amersham? A For 33 years. I feel very much part
of the fabric of the local community.
Q What is your favourite thing about the area? A We have always been a strong community and COVID-19 has only made us stronger. People will always pull together in a time of crisis and we have certainly seen that during the last 12 months. The help and support given to the most vulnerable in our community is wonderful.

ST MARY'S PARISH CHURCH
Q Pre-pandemic – and hopefully once again in the not too distant future – where are your favourite local haunts? A I love the Chiltern Open Air Museum. I am always struck with sheer wonder when I see the history right in front of my eyes, and the enactments too if I visit at the right time. I love the memorial gardens in the Old Town. Over the years they have become increasingly magical with wonderful attention to detail. I love dining out locally as we have so many fabulous restaurants. I particularly enjoy Village Mangal and Hawkyns, run by chef Atul Kochhar. I love the unexpected delicious and moreish twists of each dish. We also have Artichoke, and my favourite everyday place is Barracuda. I tend to hold all my meetings there and lunch is always fresh, delicious and affordable. I also love Gusto, a fantastic fusion of flavours from the Philippines and culinary classics. The service in all of

these places is fantastic – smiles, warmth and that feeling of being so welcome. Q Spreading the net a little wider to Buckinghamshire, what is great about the county? A Our beautiful Buckinghamshire is filled with wonderful places to visit and there is something to suit everyone. We have a wonderful history, combined with fantastic places like the Roald Dahl Museum. I love how it has made the whole village of Missenden quirky and fun. There is so much to do and enjoy on our doorstep, such as the farms, the breweries, the beautiful, picturesque villages and speciality shops. It is a wonderful destination for a break. Q Do you have a local secret or any interesting stories about the county you are willing to reveal? A There is a secret chapel at St Mary’s Church in Old Amersham. It isn’t open to the public, but I had the pleasure of being allowed to visit. The cool marble stillness that surrounds you once in there is a little spooky as it feels as though time has stopped. W
e have all missed out on so much over the past year thanks to COVID-19, especially one of the great British traditions: having a nice cup of tea, either with family or in a quaint, quirky tea room. As life starts to open up again, and to mark Time for a Cuppa week running from 1-8 May, it’s time to put the kettle on and celebrate everything to do with tea, starting with Two Spoons, a Buckinghamshire-based business launched during lockdown by Giles Oakley and Mark Lawson… So tea – has it always been a passion? Giles: Definitely. With our Irish heritage, it was never going to be otherwise. My mum drinks gallons of Assam tea, always using a teapot, always loose! Mark: I was weaned on warm, milky, sweet tea as a toddler, and being in the industry tea really gets into your veins. There is hardly a day that goes by when I’m not still learning something new about this amazing drink that gives so much pleasure to people worldwide. Why do we love tea so much? Giles: Tea has an effect on us on so many levels. There is a big social element around tea drinking, whether you are in TWO SPOONS CREATE SPECIAL BLENDS
BACK IN TIME FOR TEA
Marrakech, Kolkata or Buckinghamshire! It is culturally important too, in China, Japan and in the UK. Mark: It is refreshing, healthy and can be calming too. Science is now understanding a lot more about tea and its health benefits especially regarding heart health. One example is it contains an amino acid called l-theanine that has calming properties; just one of the reasons that historically Zen Buddhist monks drank tea whilst meditating. What were your roles at Tetley? Giles: We were both members of the tea department, and first and foremost we were tasters. We were either buyers or blenders of tea. As a buyer we were responsible for sourcing teas and making sure we got the right quality to the right place at the right time. As a blender the main role was ensuring that each blend was consistent with the last, so that week in week out the customer got the same quality. We could taste up to a thousand teas a day during our training! Where has been the strangest place you have had a cup of tea? Giles: Either a building site in Pakistan when we were constructing a tea packing factory, or a Bedouin tent in the Sahara, but that was on holiday! How did everything lead to you launching Two Spoons? Giles: After 21 years at Tata/Tetley, I had decided I needed a change. I

fternoon tea, that quintessential of English traditions. Although drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by Charles II and his Portuguese wife Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of “afternoon tea” first appeared. In the mid 19th century, Anna Maria Russell (The Duchess of Bedford) one day expressed that she had “that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. It was usual in those days that people would only eat two substantial meals during the day, breakfast and dinner. The solution to this was to take a pot of tea and a light snack to her boudoir during the afternoon. Later friends were invited to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey during the summer months. This proved very popular, so when she returned to London, she invited friends to join her for “tea and a walk in the fields”. Other social hostesses picked up on the idea and it soon became respectable to move it to the drawing room. It wasn’t long before fashionable society was sipping tea and eating dainty sandwiches and sweet treats in the middle of the afternoon. To the present day, here are my top five essentials to create the perfect afternoon tea: 1 Beautifully delicate bone china. 2 Perfectly risen scones with lashings of clotted cream and jam and other dainty sweet treats. 3 A good selection of finger sandwiches to cater for all tastes. 4 An excellent choice of teas/coffees to complement your delicacies. 5 Good company with plenty of conversation and laughter! facebook.com/Joannebackintime4tea

of the best
“We want to inspire curiosity in tea and remind people how much care and craft goes into making a cuppa” contacted Mark to see if he was up for doing something together – it made sense given we are only five miles apart. The name Two Spoons was an easy one really, named after the tools of our trade, and we often joke we are couple of spoons! You started Two Spoons in lockdown – did you have any doubts about launching during this time? Giles: The doubts for me were less about
lockdown, more about moving from the security of a regular 9-5 job to the craziness that is running your own business. Mark: Since more and more products were being bought online even before the pandemic, I saw it as an opportunity to sell to consumers directly and tell our tea stories along the way. We would have carried out a lot more face to face tasting sessions and got a foothold in local cafes if the pandemic hadn’t got in the way. What do you want to offer? Giles: Firstly, we want to offer great teas, either in tea bags (pillows as we call them) or loose. These are teas that we have selected from some of our favourite tea gardens. Secondly, we want to inspire curiosity in tea and remind people what an amazing product it is, and how much care and craft goes into making a delicious cuppa. What will we find in your Bucks Blend? Giles: We wanted to maintain the characteristics of a top quality English Breakfast, but then add a touch of class. So we have used Kenyan tea, grown in the quality belt East of the Great Rift Valley.

Beef Pho Serves 4
This is a simplified version of a traditional and complex Vietnamese soup called pho – pronounced ‘fur’. It became popular with urban dwellers with the inundation of authentic and inexpensive Vietnamese eateries in the 1970s, especially in the Sydney suburbs of Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Marrickville, and the Melbourne suburbs of Richmond, Footscray and Springvale. Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 3 hours
INGREDIENTS • 4 litres/140 fl oz (16 3/4 cups) beef stock • 5-cm/2-inch piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and finely sliced • 2 cinnamon sticks • 4 star anise • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) fish sauce • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar • 400 g/14 oz gravy beef (beef shin) or brisket, cut into bite-size pieces • 200 g/7 oz dried rice noodles • 1 white onion, finely sliced • 200 g/7 oz uncooked beef fillet, finely sliced To serve • 100 g/3 1/2 oz (1/2 cup) bean sprouts • 2 limes, quartered • 2 small red chillies (chiles), finely sliced • 1 spring onion (scallion), finely sliced, handful of Thai basil leaves
METHOD 1 Combine the stock, ginger, cinnamon, star anise, fish sauce and sugar in a large saucepan and bring to the boil over a high heat. Add the beef, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3 hours, or until the beef is very tender. Cover the saucepan and cook over a low heat to keep warm while cooking the noodles. 2 Put the rice noodles into a heatproof bowl, cover with boiling water and leave for about 4 minutes until soft. Drain well and divide among large serving bowls. 3 Divide the onion and finely sliced beef fillet over the noodles. Ladle the hot soup over the noodles, which will cook the raw beef slices and soften the onion. Serve with bean sprouts, lime quarters, sliced chillies (chiles), spring onions (scallions) and basil on the side to taste.
INGREDIENTS
Asian Coleslaw Serves 6
Salads don’t feature in all Asian cuisines, but closer to the equator, and closer to Australia, you will find all those zesty, crispy and crunchy salads that embody the freshness of Southeast Asian food. And all the fresh ingredients thrive in the Australian climate. Asian ‘slaw’ recipes were de rigueur in food magazines in the early part of this century. The ingredients themselves are not new to Australia. In the 1970s hundreds of thousands fled Laos as refugees. Many came to Australia and settled in Tasmania, the southernmost island state. The Hmong people started growing and selling Asian herbs at farmers’ markets in the 1980s. The Chinese market gardens in the Sydney suburb of La Perouse, meanwhile, have been growing Asian vegetables and herbs since around the turn of the 20th century. These small lots are protected under the heritage act. Compared to earlier versions, this coleslaw is less about comfort food and more about freshness and crispness with a kick of chilli (chile). Preparation time 20 minutes
• 600 g/1 lb 5 oz Chinese (napa) cabbage, finely shredded • 2 spring onions (scallions), finely sliced on the bias • 1 small bunch coriander (cilantro), coarsely chopped • 1 small bunch fresh mint, coarsely chopped • 20 g/ 3/4 oz dill, coarsely chopped • 2 large green chillies (chiles), finely sliced For the dressing • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) rice vinegar • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) light soy sauce • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) olive oil • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
METHOD 1 To make the dressing, put the vinegar, soy sauce and sugar into a bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Stir through the remaining ingredients and set aside. 2 Put the cabbage into a large bowl. Pour half of the dressing over the cabbage and use your hands to toss the cabbage around at the same time as crunching it between your hands. 3 Stir through the spring onions, half the coriander, mint, dill and green chilli. 4 Serve with the remaining herbs and chilli scattered over.

Chicken Parmi (Parmigiana) Serves 4
I’m not a gambling man, but if I were, I would bet that if you randomly chose a pub in Australia, you would find chicken parmi (parmigiana) – also called ‘chicken parma’ – on the menu. Preparation time 10 minutes Cooking time 45 minutes
INGREDIENTS
1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/ Gas Mark 4. Line a roasting pan with baking (parchment) paper. 2 Put the chicken breast fillets onto a clean chopping (cutting) board. With the palm of one hand on the chicken, carefully cut through the centre of the fillet, horizontally, to give two pieces. Repeat with the second chicken fillet. Put the four pieces of chicken between two sheets of clingfilm (plastic wrap) in one layer. Use a meat mallet or rolling pin to pound the chicken so it is an even thickness, ideally no thicker than 5mm (1/4 inch), then transfer to a plate. 3 Put the flour onto a plate, beat the eggs in a bowl and put the breadcrumbs on a plate. Toss the chicken in the flour, then dip in the beaten egg, and finally press into the breadcrumbs until coated all over. Return to the plate and set aside. 4 Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan or skillet over a medium heat. When the butter is melted and sizzling, add two chicken breasts and cook for five minutes on each side until golden. Adjust the heat if the breadcrumbs are cooking too quickly. Transfer to the prepared roasting pan and repeat to cook the remaining chicken, adding it to the pan. 5 Pour the tomato passata (tomato puree) over the top of each chicken breast, add the mozzarella, Parmesan and a sprinkle of oregano, then bake in the oven for 30 minutes, or until golden. Scatter over the parsley and chilli (red pepper) flakes, if using, and serve hot.
• 2 large skinless and boneless chicken breast fillets, about 200g/7 oz each • 60 g/2 1/4 oz (7 1/4 tablespoons) plain (all-purpose) flour • 2 eggs • 200 g/7 oz (3 cups) stale breadcrumbs • 125 ml/4 1/4 fl oz (1/2 cup) vegetable oil • 2 tablespoons butter • 250 ml/8 fl oz (1 cup) tomato passata (tomato puree) • 200 g/7 oz mozzarella cheese, sliced • 50 g/2 oz (1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons) finely grated • Parmesan cheese • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1/2 teaspoon chilli (red pepper) flakes (optional)

ANNIE HOLT, FOUNDER OF ETHEREAL LONDON

Heavenly LO O K
Annie Holt, the founder of Gerrards Cross-based Ethereal London, discusses dealing with a pandemic and going virtual
by MARK KEBBLE
“I wanted to create clothes that contributed to the world in a considered, positive and responsible way” 36
Q What inspired you to set up Ethereal London? A After working in the fashion industry for 15 years, I wanted to build a brand around my love of silk and passion for beautiful floral prints and colour palettes. But I also wanted to create clothes that contributed to the world in a considered, positive and responsible way. Ethereal London came from my personal experiences of trying to find elegant forever pieces without wanting to compromise on the fit or quality of fabrics. Falling in love with a dress and how it makes you feel when you try it on is a special experience; however it’s an experience that is difficult to find on the high street within the realms of fast fashion. Lots of women have spoken to me about similar experiences, where dresses only ever seem to come in one shape, length or silhouette, which of course doesn’t suit everyone. I want to create quality dresses you can fall in love with. Q Why is sustainability such a key issue for you? A There are so many reasons I could give you and I could probably fill a whole article talking about it...

FASHION • Q&A
“I focus on designing to make women feel their best, looking at figure flattering and elegant silhouettes”
I think fast fashion has promoted over consumption and this throw away mentality for far too long, driving volume and prices down along with quality and ethics, so much so I don’t think your average fashion consumer knows how much a garment costs to make or how long each dress takes to make. There has been so much in the press over the last few years highlighting the issues and it must change. We need to go back to practicing what our grandparents and their parents did, and investing what we can afford in key items and caring for them. I am passionate about ending fast fashion and producing garments with love and care that stand the test of time. We are striving to be a more conscious brand in the way we both design, source and produce our collections. I founded Ethereal London by ethically sourcing fabrics, following sustainable practices that respect people and the environment, reducing waste, but all the while not compromising on
design or attention to detail. Sustainability through timelessness is key to everything we do and we want to offer pieces to our customers that they will love forever and will stand the test of time both in terms of design and quality. I am always learning and looking at ways we can improve and are about to start a journey with b-corp. Ethereal was also recently awarded ‘one to watch’ at the Drapers Sustainability awards. No-one can be 100% sustainable, but we can all do better and do our part, and we are constantly striving to learn and do everything that we can to improve our practices. Q How do you go about ensuring
that your clothes are timeless? A I always aim to design beautiful clothes made to the highest standards with attention to detail especially around fabric,
fit and finishing. I avoid designing to trends and only take subtle influences from them to ensure the styles are not a passing phase. I focus on designing to make women feel their best, looking at figure flattering and elegant silhouettes, beautiful colours and stunning prints, ensuring they become firm favourites and stand the test of time both from a design and quality perspective. Q Why have you launched a virtual store? A When I started the brand I always wanted
to innovate using the latest technology and had been testing the 3D designs you will see on the website now before the pandemic, with plans to move into the virtual world in a few years. However, with the impact of the pandemic and the fact I was unable to continue A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

my plans for pop-ups, which had been a very successful part of the business previously, I made the decision to bring this part of the strategy forward and I’m so glad I did. The virtual store has had such an amazing reaction on social media and so much customer traffic, it’s been a really good way to give the brand experience you would get in a real store with visual merchandising to best showcase the collections and all of the brand personality you can’t always get across through scrolling on a standard website store. It also adds a bit of fun and the social side back into shopping as you can virtually meet friends or even your stylist in there. I’ve been hosting bespoke and styling appointments with customers myself and it has been an invaluable platform during this time when you cannot meet face to face. Q How has the past year been for you? A Saying it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster
might be a bit of an understatement as running your own business is that in a normal year, but the current situation has really tested my resilience to the maximum, as I’m sure all business owners will agree. You fight to survive. I must admit in the early part of the first lockdown it was really hard with returns, orders cancelled, even bespoke orders where every event from weddings to races could no longer go ahead. I had no choice but to accept the situation. Timing was thankfully on my side as I was just about to confirm orders for the
spring/summer season when everything closed so I was able to pause everything. I took my time to consider the options and started moving some of the plans I had for further down the line to launch sooner, introducing Ethereal At Home and Ethereal Everyday to complement the Ethereal Event ranges. Every decision has felt like a huge risk as everything has been so uncertain; however these new collections were thankfully really well received. We also had the support of the press and celebrities championing small independent businesses, so had some amazing coverage including Amanda Holden, Kimberley Walsh and Rachel Stevens. Q You have also got involved with the Government Kickstarter scheme. Is this a way for you to give something back to the community?
“The current situation has tested my resilience to the maximum, as all business owners will agree”
A Most definitely, when I heard about the scheme I thought it was an amazing initiative. I remember when I graduated from uni how hard it was to get into the fashion industry and I would have jumped at the chance to work for an emerging brand. I can only imagine how hard it must be for students and graduates now throughout the pandemic. This is the talent of our future and they need to be supported. I’ve managed teams in my previous roles and always loved mentoring them and seeing them progress. I also have volunteered as a mentor for the girls’ network previously, so the Kickstarter scheme felt like a great opportunity to continue this and give someone the chance to gain hands on experience, more than they might in a larger, more established company and team, and the opportunity to see their ideas come to life. We are a month in and already they are doing amazingly and I hope enjoying every minute. I’m trying to make it as interesting, educational and also challenging (in a good way) for them as possible so they will come away with the knowledge and confidence to progress their careers.

Getting started is always the hardest part. Pushing a boulder up a hill is really hard on your own. Start exercising with people. Run with a friend. Start weight training with a few buddies. Join a gym with a positive, immersive community and get involved with everything on offer. Pushing boulders is easier with friends, and exercise is the same. Make it fun. Make it social. If you enjoy it, the results are easy.
IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO HATES THE THOUGHT OF EXERCISING
In my experience there are two reasons people hate the idea of exercise. It has failed to make them feel/look better previously, and they focus their motivation on a negative. What I mean by that is they think about what they don’t want. “I don’t want to be fat, I don’t want to look weak, I don’t want to have pain in my knee…” You’ve got to get excited about your exercise. It’s a physical expression of who you are, so research some cool ways to express what you can really do. Set targets towards positive outcomes. “I’m going to fit in that sexy dress. I’m going to see some abs. I’m going to do a cartwheel.” The more ways you find to exercise in a way that excites you, the longer you’ll stick to your training, and then your exercise will never fail you again.
A HEALTHY START TO LIFE IS KEY AT WILD TRAINING
WHAT MARTIAL ARTS CAN OFFER IN THE WAY OF AN EXERCISE REGIME
I’ve focused on three things with my training and my job. Strength training, bodyweight exercise and sport. One of the most empowering forms of exercise I’ve ever experienced is martial arts. The chaos of learning a sport where other people are involved in the outcome makes something like martial arts a great, all around test of your fitness. It will humble you and build confidence at the same time. There is a huge difference between violence and learning to fight and, for me, martial arts is something I ensure I always explore with my personal training clients and gym members because it’s too fun and too effective to be ignored. This is also why we have chosen to open our Wild Training Martial Arts Centre.
THE IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE FOR CHILDREN
I started bringing my kids to the gym when they were between three and four. We’d roll around on the soft matted studio where we do martial arts and learn movement basics in fun games whilst building in key learning skills that they were focusing on at school, like counting and phonics. Those fun sessions have now turned into the Wild Child kids' classes we run at the Wild Training Gym. It’s been a massive success and something we plan to continue because we know the kids that have a positive experience exercising with us from four-years-old will be so much more likely to enjoy living an active healthy lifestyle in the future.

f there’s one thing we’ve been missing above all else this past year, it’s human connection. But as well as the lack of socialising, most of us have neglected our bodies too. Unless you’re in the camp that took up jogging (and actually stuck to it), the stress of the past year and staying indoors has meant not only less movement, but also less self care, as gyms, spas and beauty treatments were put on pause. A duo hoping to repair and rebuild our physical and mental wellbeing are Alice Vaughan and Scarlet Crawley. Their massage company, Masaj, has built up a loyal following since Crawley founded it in 2016, aiming to provide a different kind of bodywork experience for its customers. Rather than a one-fits-all system, Masaj has a more individual approach to massage, creating a welcoming atmosphere from the very minute you book your appointment right through to when you leave their gorgeous new Charlotte Road premises (they were previously located off Hackney Road). The Masaj team doesn't just massage out tension (goodness knows we need it), but helps to get you in better shape, physically and mentally, with a concise menu of six treatment types. Determined to make a real difference, not just in the beauty and wellness industry, but to each individual customer, their mission is admirable. And at £75 for an hour, it’s reasonably priced too. STAYCATION S K I N C A R E
In a new column, the founder of Berkshire Aesthetics reflects on why staying put this summer doesn’t mean ignoring beauty advice By DR SELENA LANGDON
W
ith lockdown easing, but overseas travel still far from certain, many of us will have planned a staycation. While we might not experience the soaring temperatures of the Mediterranean, the British summer can still offer us some wonderful opportunities to top up our vitamin D. With more time outdoors, which can give your skin a sun-kissed glow, it is very important to not forget about sun protection. As we move into summer, I advise my patients about the vital need for sunscreen, along with wearing a wide brimmed hat
and sunglasses. However, sunscreen is not only for the warmer months. Whilst a high SPF is important during the summer (at least factor 30, preferably 50), our skin does benefit from continuous UV protection all year-round. I find a good sunscreen to be one which is oil-free as high factor sunscreens can often feel heavy and greasy. Oil-free options tend to work well, especially under makeup. I also prefer mineral sunscreens as they create a physical barrier, which is better for the skin. With SPF as a staple of summer skincare, what else might we add to our skincare routine in the summer while staying nearer to home? During the summer months controlling oil and cleansing the skin is more important, but more often the issues
come when people overdo it and make the problem of oily skin worse. As the weather becomes warmer, we sweat a little more and naturally most of us think that more cleansing will help to combat this effect. What we do not want to do, however, is strip away the skin’s natural oils as it will simply compensate by producing even more. So, when it comes to cleansing, just a little adjustment is needed. What is important is to build skin health that is consistent throughout the year rather than interrupting the skin’s natural processes. Moisturising is more complex for those who suffer with dry skin. Through winter the low humidity, warmer showers and drying effects of indoor central heating can take their toll. Those who switch in winter to a thicker moisturiser should dial back to something lighter for the summer months. And remember, moisturise before you apply SPF, making sure you reapply your SPF throughout the day, ideally every two hours especially if you are swimming for example. I often recommend adding in a vitamin C serum to your routine, as it not only works as an antioxidant, but will also help to combat some of the pigmentation that many often develop from more intense sun exposure. A great choice when on holiday is a non-comedogenic tinted sunscreen as an alternative to your usual foundation, making it easier to reapply regularly. Do not forget also that while products can help your skin it is important to stay well hydrated and avoid being out in the sun during the middle of the day when UV rays are strongest. CREATING SPACE How a few small tweaks can have a big impact on your home By SANDRA ROTHWELL
I
have been delighted with the response to my virtual design service, Roomology, which I launched last month and it came as no surprise that the need for more space, especially now we are spending more time at home, was a common request. Here’s some advice on how to reclaim your space:
Make sure you have a mix of lighting at different heights to create the right dynamic
DECLUTTER Decluttering is a great first step. Discarding anything you haven’t admired, worn or used in over a year and donating it to charity will be both worthwhile and rewarding.
STORAGE Next step is storage. Creating the right combination of cupboards and shelves to either hide or display items and focusing on unusual finishes can make this a great design feature. I love faux shagreen or unusual veneers. Bench seating can be a great storage solution too, either in the kitchen or boot room. Wall-mounting the TV will give an illusion of space in rooms where furniture is looking a little cluttered, but if you have the space, a built-in media unit can be the architectural focal point your room is crying out for. Adding a sideboard or relocating an existing one can make a huge difference to a room layout. Either tie it in with existing décor or make a statement, there’s some great pieces with textured finishes. I love Gallotti & Radice, who have the most innovative and sophisticated pieces.
LAYOUT It’s tempting to push large pieces of furniture up against walls. If you’re tight for space you may have no choice, but in larger
or open plan areas, moving sofas closer together, for example, and allowing space to move around them, will add a greater sense of flow and balance within the room and offer a more intimate social space. Tall open shelving units are great for zoning areas without reducing the amount of light or space available.
ILLUSIONS Painting or wallpapering your home in a lighter, more neutral colour will help make the space look larger and strategically placed mirrors work well by reflecting light into dark spaces. Reflective surfaces are a great option too – not too shiny, but a subtle sheen – which helps to bounce the light around.
LIGHTING Make sure you have a mix of lighting at different heights to create the right dynamic. And letting the light flood in from windows helps, so make sure the curtains or blinds can be pulled back as far as possible. sandrarothwellinteriors.com/roomology A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

I
started out working in the film industry, which was a very exciting time in my life and a fantastically creative start to my professional life as a designer. I completed an MA in Film Production Design at the Royal College of Art in 1997 and spent ten years working with some very talented people on films like The Matrix Revolutions, Troy and 102 Dalmatians. I learnt so much about spatial design, but also how to work with lots of differing trades and, of course, movie stars! It’s a very pressurised industry though, but I like to think if you can cut-it in the film industry as a designer, you can cut it anywhere. Balancing the time pressures of the film industry and having a family was really tough, so I decided to take a break and focus on bringing up my two kids. I naturally started to focus on my home and look at how my surroundings really affected me and how they could be improved. Wellbeing wasn’t discussed so openly then, but I realised that a home
or interior that truly resonates with the owner could be really beneficial emotionally. That was the lightbulb moment when I decided to move into interior design and I haven’t looked back. I used my film set design experience to give my home a radical makeover – almost like an experiment I guess. I decided to make my home a real expression of me, my family needs and what I felt might nourish or change our emotions. Looking back, every room had a different style, colour or vibe depending on its use or the emotional effect I wanted it to have. I started to use colour psychology and understand the power of colour, and by the end of the process I had a great home and I had built a clear direction for my interior design business. My house makeover got into Ideal Home Magazine and from there the interest grew. I’m passionate about people and their stories, so for me a great interior isn’t about trends, it’s about helping clients to create spaces that really reflect their unique personalities – and that idea inspired me to launch Kate Lovejoy Interiors. I wanted to offer a truly bespoke interior design service, but I knew I wanted it to be client focused more than fashion focused. From day one I have set about helping clients create interiors that they could really connect with and cherish. My aim then and now is to design interiors that function brilliantly on both a practical and emotional level. The strapline “weaving my client’s story through their home” was born when I started my business and I still use it today! I am known for my use of colour and my interiors are bold and stylish – that’s what clients come to me for. Nothing has the power to change how you feel or react A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

to a space like colour, yet people are quite afraid of it and they absolutely shouldn’t be. I think it’s this fear that leads people to go for the play safe neutral interiors. Don’t get me wrong, neutrals can look great, but once you realise how your everyday life can be positively affected by the right colour you won’t look back. But the colour ambition and the style direction always comes from my clients at the start of a project. What I do is take their ideas and wishes and channel them into their dream interiors. No matter the scale of the project I always start by meeting clients at their homes and it’s there we discuss their ambitions for the project, what works or doesn’t work in their spaces and what gets them visually excited or changes their moods. From there I provide the creativity and expertise, but my clients are involved with every aspect of the project. I guess you could say I am channelling their unique vision – it’s such a fulfilling way to work for both parties.
LOCAL PROJECT PICKS F E R R Y R OA D B R AY, B E R K S H I R E Q. What was the initial brief? A. Take a picture perfect cottage with a white picket fence and give it a rock and roll meets cocktail bar interior that a family could live in - a brilliant brief for an interior designer like me! Q. Were there any challenges or obstacles you had to overcome? A. The client had an amazingly bold style and wanted to celebrate it, but with more eclectic art and furniture than they knew what to do with. The challenge was to bring it all together in a coherent look and feel. Q. What unique touches did you bring to the project? A. Where do I start? We had a retro cocktail bar with palm tree lights in the lounge, hot pink and purple sofas throughout, even graffiti wallpaper - it shouldn’t have worked, but it really did! The trick was to pull it all together with a big vision I created with the client right at the start of the project and that’s what held it all together.

SPINFIELD’S OPEN PLAN ROOMS HAVE THEIR OWN LOOK AND FEEL
M A R LO W, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE Q. What was the initial brief? A. I was asked to re-design the entire house for a newly extended and updated 1950s bungalow. The client was very keen for the open plan rooms to work together, but to have their own distinct feel. Q. Were there any challenges or obstacles you had to overcome? A. The big challenge on this project was to ensure the new extension felt like an integral part of the 50s house, rather than an uncomfortable modern addition. Q. What unique touches did you bring to the project? A. There were lots of unique style points. Downstairs I used a gentle pale blue background throughout and then added punches of cerise pink and emerald green. Upstairs we calmed things down with a beautiful chalky green bedroom, where we painted the walls, storage units and matched the curtains for a fully immersive look and feel.

“A celebration of cultures expressed through technicolour pattern”
Y
inka Ilori is a Londonbased multidisciplinary artist of a BritishNigerian heritage, who specialises in storytelling by fusing his British and Nigerian heritage to tell new stories in contemporary design. Humorous, provocative and fun, every project that he creates tells a story. Bringing Nigerian verbal traditional into playful conversation with contemporary design, Yinka Ilori’s work touches on various global themes that resonate with different audiences all over the world. Celebrated for his large-scale installations such as the 2019 Pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery, the multidisciplinary artist has now channelled his talent for colours and patterns into his first homeware collection. It is a continuation of design work inspired by his own British Nigerian heritage and childhood, a colourful celebration of two cultures expressed through abstract, technicolour pattern and contemporary craft. Unexpected, functional household items that evoke memories from his own upbringing have been reworked as
colourful artworks. Each has their own narrative and backstory, meant to instil a sense of optimism and joy, to act in their own small way as a distraction to the dark times that we’re facing this year. These pieces are fun and colourful, joyous, summery and appealing with their bold shapes and bright colours that mark a welcome movement away from muted, subtle homewares. Ilori creates stories through his designs, reinterpreting happy moments and experiences into his artworks. These vibrant bowls, textiles and more, are all made by skilled craftspeople in Portugal, Poland and Nepal - and the collection is stocked at SCP. Y I N K A I LO R I yinkailori.com

They loved the look of it but, when it came to the fitting, they had reservations about drilling a hole through their solid oak front door. With a background in casting bronze, they were no strangers to the ins and outs of designing and making intricate pieces in metal. So, they decided to cast a fish knocker complete with an invisible fixing that seamlessly attached to their door. Having successfully created a salmon door knocker, they went on to develop a range of original designs for others to enjoy. Their focus was to produce a sustainable, quality product using traditional methods of casting. “We see our door knockers more as functional sculptures. They are an expression of character and a signature of one's home,” they say. With their knowledge of metal casting and the help of a friend living in Delhi, they began to search for a partner foundry who shared their ethos. After several visits to India, they forged links with a small family-run foundry. They are a small team of highly skilled artisans whose expertise has been passed down from generation to generation. They cast each piece by hand with unerring attention to detail. As the production process is split between the UK and India, a shared passion for beautiful, handcrafted, sustainable products is an integral part of the success of the business. Adams & Mack’s unique door knocker designs are inspired by nature. Each new
design starts life as a simple pencil sketch. Once happy with the form, moulds are created and sent to the team in India. When casting is complete the door knockers are finished and assembled in the workshop in South Devon. Each design is available in a range of colours, including an antique finish, which is achieved using a chemical-free process. Every door knocker Adams & Mack creates has a character of its own: there are rabbits, birds and bees as well as flowers and flourishes. Knock knock.

The Couture Gallery on creating perfect style for brides
BRITTA KJERKEGAARD
Q What is your fashion background and
how did you get into bridal design? A I wanted to be a designer from a very early age and did my early practical sewing and pattern cutting training in my native Demark. Then I worked my way up in haute couture internationally. This included a spell in a Milan fashion house and with UK designers such as Philip Treacy and Antony Price. While working with Danish designer Ann Wiberg I made a few evening pieces for friends and the sister of a friend asked me to design her wedding dress. It felt really special. This was around 2007, which was a very traditional time in bridal with heavy full dresses. I began to create gowns with a more modern twist – less fabric, lighter to wear, but still with the
glamour. And from the start, I included some coloured wedding gowns. That’s not so unusual now, but it was back then. Q What is your approach to bridal? A My approach is about luxurious fabrics
and impeccable couture cut and fit – and I particularly love full gowns. While many of my gowns have the classic princess or mermaid shape, they are created to be light, with clever integral corsetry that is both easy to wear and very flattering. Brides are often surprised at how comfortable and light my dresses feel when they try them on. Every gown in my couture collection is created and designed around each individual bride. I’d say that my dresses are for modern brides who still love the idea of dressing up. Q Tell us about your new Garden Q How does the design process work? A A first appointment is a chance to try on
lots of dresses. Typically, there are 40-50 gowns at my Kensington store at any one time. I always encourage brides to try on different shapes and styles to find out which silhouette is the most flattering. Once a bride has decided they want me to create their dress, I will present three or four sketches and then work with them to narrow down to the final design. From there, it’s the full couture process, with a calico fitting and between two and four silk fittings. Ideally, it’s a process that takes nine to 12 months. Beyond the couture collections, I also offer Modern Bride – a contemporary collection of sophisticated gowns and separates that are perfect for smaller weddings or for brides who want a second outfit.
of Eden couture collection? A It is all about statement dresses and
fairytale elements. There are traditionalmeets-modern twists in some gowns, such as demure fronts and low backs. A really strong feature is adaptability, a skirt can be removed to transform the dress – for example, take it from long and voluminous to a chic short dress. This works brilliantly for brides who might be having a smaller formal ceremony followed by a big gathering. With all that has happened, it has become even more important as part of the celebration. It’s my job – and my pleasure – to make their dream dress a reality. T H E C O U T U R E G A L L E RY 6 Campden Street, W8; thecouturegallery.com

ombe Manor is an unsung gem residing amongst the rolling hills of the Berkshire countryside. Originally listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, this venue has an intriguing history. Previously held by King’s College Cambridge, the manor is said to have been visited by Charles II and Nell Gwynne. This venue includes two L-shaped barns and an open courtyard creating free-flowing spaces. Its versatile nature lends itself to holding breezy spring and summer weddings, or cozy winter occasions. Also a short distance from the barns is a quaint, yet delightful Norman church dating back to the 12th century for those who prefer a more intimate ceremony.

This location gives you exclusive access to the grounds with numerous options to allow for flexibility and the freedom to take in the rich history of the area. A real stand out is the historic manor house, which dates back to the 15th century, with its eyecatching classic red bricks in contrast with its green lawns, lush flower beds and shrubs. Another highlight of the site is one of the most sought-after barn venues in the UK, Lillibrooke’s Great Barn, which can comfortably hold 170-220 guests.

Restored in 2012 and previously housing carriages and coaches, the space has been transformed into a barn with a nod to its historical origins. IMPECCABLE WEDDING BEAUTY BY SOPHIE TILLEY
Bridal SKINCARE TIPS
Beauty expert Sophie Tilley knows everything about preparing for big events – working with both brides and celebrities. Here she gives advice on being wedding-day ready, and it all starts with your skin...
1. Cleanse properly
You may be waiting to set the date, but it’s never too early to start perfecting your regime. Two leading bridal specialists give us their advice for being your best self on the day
It may seem obvious, but many of us aren’t doing this first step quite right. And think about it, if you’re not cleaning your skin properly (that’s surface skin as well as deep into the pores), none of your serums, moisturisers and treatments can penetrate efficiently. Consider what you’re using in the morning separately to the evening as these ideally should be different textures. Morning is easy: a non-foaming facewash with a gel or cream-based product will do the trick. The evening is where you should spend a bit more time after a long day, where you’ve likely been wearing skincare and make-up. Remove your make-up with a simple cleanser or micellar water, then clean your skin thoroughly. A balm cleanser is ideal for this as it will melt away impurities from fine lines and pores. Use with a muslin or microfibre cloth for extra polishing benefits. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

UP-DOS ARE IN FOR BRIDES AT MICHAEL VAN CLARKE
2. Exfoliate regularly
New, fresh skin is what we all want. Uncover it by promoting your skin’s renewal process. This means sloughing off any dead, dry surface skin, but also stimulating the next layer to come through. We’re not talking scrubs here (save that for your body) or anything too abrasive – gently does it. The best way is by using a liquid exfoliant. One containing BHA’s (beta-hydroxy acid) and AHA’s (alpha-hydroxy acid) will rid your face of surplus debris and you don’t even need to remove it. Some are mild enough to use every day, others you can space out throughout the week. Ease yourself in and get ready to see glass-like skin revealed.
3. SPF always
This should go without saying, but protecting your skin from sun damage and all the harmful rays we’re faced with on a daily basis is integral. Sun protection (that’s UVA and UVB rays) is the most anti-ageing product you can apply to your skin. Rain or shine, winter or summer, if you can see your hand in front of your face, you should be wearing sunscreen. I always advise SPF50 and there are plenty on the market, most of which are very affordable and will pay dividends on your flawless skin goals.
retinol at night. Antioxidant vitamin C yields a host of benefits: radiance boosting, treating uneven skin tone (pigmentation) and calming redness. Available in a variety of percentages, go for the highest you can afford. Retinol (only to be applied at night) renews skin by promoting cell turnover. It will gradually shed the outermost dead cells of your skin, revealing fresh, new layers. Retinol comes in a variety of strengths so ease yourself in and gradually build up resilience. Be sure to wear SPF the following day – very important as retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays.
5. Treat your skin
Whether it’s a mask or a moisturiser, keep an eye out for these key ingredients, depending on your main concern. If you want hydration, look for hyaluronic acid (naturally occurring in our skin), which can hold a hundred times its own weight in water. Humectants like glycerin draw moisture to the top layer of the skin, a great combination. For breakouts, salicylic acid is a good antidote, helping to control excess sebum whilst calming any redness or sensitivity. If you want an all-rounder, niacinamide is a great ingredient, helping skin to repair, retain hydration levels and build resilience. sophietilley.uk
4. Serum counts
Think of serum as taking your vitamins before eating your meal. We want to boost the nutrients and actives to improve our skin’s daily diet. The key couple I’d say here are vitamin C for the morning and

GREAT MAKE-UP STARTS WITH GREAT SKIN, SAYS SOPHIE TILLEY
HAIR BY SUMMER LANGTON, MICHAEL VAN CLARKE
Great WEDDING HAIR
Summer Langton, senior stylist and bridal expert at Michael Van Clarke in Marylebone, London, has expert tips on trends and pre-wedding care
The key trends
A key trend right now is for very soft pretty hair – from loose waves to a sophisticated, but relaxed chignon. Classic half up half down remains a favourite for brides (from 1960s volume to boho plaits) and works really well with a veil. It’s also smart, but ensures brides still feel like themselves. Accessories are also becoming popular with brides – some choosing this route over wearing a veil – and many are also keen to change their look from an up-do for ceremony to down for the reception.
Your wedding routine
Get yourself into a good hair routine. That includes trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks, avoiding unnecessary blow drying and applying treatments (try Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Pre-wash once a week, leaving it in overnight). Do get to know the hairdresser who will be doing your hair so they know your style – and the atmosphere you want to create. I recommend a hair trial after you have chosen your dress. Take along lots of pictures – the more the better – wear a top with a similar colour and neckline, and don’t be afraid to try different styles. It’s wonderful if you can time a dress fitting for after your hair trial, so you see how everything works together. vanclarke.com

MK COLLEGE
Class of TOMORROW Stressful, exhausting and seriously hard work but people still want to teach By KIERAN GRIMES

f all the jobs impacted by the pandemic, few outside the health sector have had more to cope with than teachers. Teachers haven’t been taught how to do what they do online. While every office-based worker has had to get to grips with Zoom or Microsoft Teams, teachers have had to do it while showing their pupils how it’s done and completely transforming classroom delivery to virtual. Nobody has had a roadmap, and for every school or college the approach has been different as we all make it up as we go along. Younger children have been excited to talk to “Sir or Miss” on their computers, while teenagers, who we might have thought were best suited to the situation
88
having lived all their lives online, have only wanted to communicate via chat functions, unseen and silent. Some institutions have kept a very tight rein on attendance with virtual absences being followed up with swift phone calls home. Teachers have worried about welfare, urging kids to go and kick a ball or read a book to reduce the pressure, or holding quizzes designed to identify those struggling most. They’ve been trying to spot and support the digitally disadvantaged, students without a laptop or just one between the family, ones with little or no broadband, or just no quiet room in which to work. Adult provisions also changed. There have been many more requests for extensions for assignments from fraught parents struggling to home school their own children on top of their work. Of course, teachers have had to deal with

THE PANDEMIC HAS STOPPED TEACHERS INTERACTING IN THE CLASSROOM
Teachers have had to face the isolation and worry we've all faced. They have shown amazing resilience the isolation and worry we’ve all faced too. They’ve shown amazing resilience. In spite of this, there’s still a hunger from people who want to become teachers. Milton Keynes College has formed a unique teacher training partnership with Two Mile Ash School, making a virtue of being virtual. There’s a national shortage of qualified teachers, including in Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire – gaps the course aims to help fill. People who want to become teachers can take a part-time Access to Higher Education course at the College
preparing them to study for a BA Hons in Primary Education with Two Mile Ash. The course is virtual, with the only physical attendance requirement being one Saturday per month at College. Thanks to COVID neither teaching nor learning will ever be the same, and there’s one aspect in particular of school which is definitely gone for good. Remember “snow days” providing an unexpected day off? From now on it will be, “Don’t worry kids. You can’t come into school, but the good news is we can do all our lessons online.” I feel nostalgic already.

deal for the travelling family, lightweight and folding away to fit in the boot of a Mini, the Junior Jones J-Spirit is a stylish single pushchair with a reversible seat so your child can face forward or rear. The price is mid-range and it’s easy to assemble, it came in one box and all I had to do was pop the wheels on. It’s suitable from birth as it has a lay flat position.
This stroller takes a bit of getting used to when it comes to folding it, but once you get the hang of it, it takes no time at all. It’s freestanding when folded and if you really need a bit more space, you can remove the back wheels. The J-Spirit even fits into the boot of a Mini. The all suspension wheels are puncture resistant so provide a smooth ride, offering you the effortless push experience that Junior Jones pushchairs are well known for. Wheels are also removable so easy to clean. One
of my favourite things about this stroller is the handlebar, which is really smooth. Easy to adapt to suit all heights, so if your partner or friend is a little taller, you can simply adjust the position. The breaks are easy to push, but something to point out is that you need to make sure you hear a click to make sure your baby stays safe. There is a good size basket underneath the chair, perfect for storing essential items. This model comes with a large sun canopy to keep your child protected from the sun; it also features a very handy ventilation panel for warmer days. This stroller is lightweight and folds up small, so it’s perfect for the travelling family. It’s important when purchasing a pushchair that you invest in something that can grow with your child – and with all of the adaptable features the J-Spirit certainly fulfils this brief. juniorjones.com
hat do you look for in a pushchair? Over the years, we have been through so many that I now know exactly what we need. I need to be able to push one handed, and lots of space for storage. Nuna Mixx ticks both these boxes. Manoeuvrability is great with swivel wheels at the front and the all wheel suspension at the back makes it a super smooth ride for off-road. The basket is ample compared to competitors, and it can be split into two parts if you want to separate your food from coats. Another great feature is that it can lay flat, so in theory this could be used from birth. A few points to look out for… we found the pushbar was a bit high (and I am not particularly short) and it’s a little wide for getting in and out of doors. We also found that the seat was a little short, so if you have an older toddler in it, they would hit their head on the hood. That said, it’s a durable, quality pushchair, with soft bamboo-blend fabric material and the hand-sewn leatherette handle/pushbars are stylish and comfortable. It’s also pretty easy to fold up and down. Tick from us!

If you have children, this bathroom is great as there's lots of room for bedtime baths, plus ultimate relaxation for mum. The piece-de-laresistance for us was the woodburning hot tub in the garden. For the first attempt, it takes almost four hours to heat up, but it’s definitely worth it. Much warmer (and greener) than an electric one, we sat stargazing with the smell of wood burning.

the property and maintaining it, even if you take out a home reversion plan and sell 100% of your property. Q Do I have to ‘qualify’ to get equity release? A No, there are only two factors in a
company offering equity release. That you are all over 55 years of age (the older you both are – if you are doing it joint life – the more you can release), and that the property you own is of standard construction and would normally be ‘mortgageable’.
Valuable ADVICE
Equity release is a contentious subject, so here, local expert Craig Spark looks at everything you need to know By MARK KEBBLE Q How much can I release? A The amount you are able to release
will depend on your age, your home's value, and your current health and lifestyle. Some medical conditions could mean that you qualify for an enhanced lifetime mortgage, which could mean you can release more money from your home. There are also other things that will affect the amount you can release, such as whether you want a joint plan with a spouse or partner, or whether you want to leave an inheritance. Q Does the cash I release from
the home get taxed? A The cash lump sum released from your home is tax-free. However, if you decide to place this money in a savings
“It is a highly regulated part of the mortgage industry” account, secure a regular income, or make an investment, tax may then be payable on any interest, income or gains you receive. Please note that we do not currently provide investment advice. Q Does taking equity release mean I am renting my home? A No. With all types of equity release, you remain responsible for insuring
Q Why do you think equity release receives some negative press? A In the nineties and early noughties it had garnered a bad reputation that is taking a long time to dispel. Since 2008 it is a completely new, highly regulated part of the mortgage industry. The key is that it all depends on a client’s situation. Do they have an existing mortgage? Are they on benefits that would be affected? Do they need to supplement income? Do they need a lump sum? Do they want to protect some of the equity as inheritance for the children? What is their risk profile? Are they vulnerable and therefore should have a witness at the meetings, or even a power of attorney in place? All of these factors and more need to be considered, which is why if you advise on releasing equity in any form you need to be properly qualified and if you are independent (which I am) a copy of that qualification needs to be held by every single company that you do business with. No qualification, no dealings. In addition to all that, the clients need to get independent legal advice and it is with the solicitor, not the adviser, that the clients signs the paperwork to proceed. Everything has been set up to protect the client throughout the process. It just isn’t as it was 12+ years ago.
