SOMETHING OLD

A HELPING HAND After-school homework clubs are being opened up in libraries around Islington in the bid to give children extra support and help in school. All of Islington Council’s ten libraries are offering a free homework club to children aged 5-16 years old. Councillor Ruth Polling, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Leisure and Equalities, said: “Islington’s children deserve the best start to life and Islington Council is committed to helping them get it.”

Vintage clothing has brought a whole new look to Archway with a new fashion fair setting up shop. The first ‘Vintage... And More’ Fashion Fair was held on 27th September and offered clothing, accessories and textiles from the 1800s-1980s, customised one-off designs made from vintage and modern fabrics and a selection of vintage men’s and children’s wear. The next fair is set for Sunday 29th November, with hopes that it becomes a popular event and more dates can be set for 2010.

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT

Islington Council has joined dozens of organisations and public figures in pledging support for the new national 10:10 campaign against global warming. 10:10 is committed to cutting its carbon footprint by 10 per cent during 2010 and is supported not only by Islington Council but by TV chef Delia Smith and designer Vivienne Westwood. THe BoyS Are BAck IN TowN They were the iconic band of the 80s who created their own style from the underground club scene and shot to global superstardom. Now, 20 years later, Spandau Ballet are back and lead singer Tony Hadley chats to Jenny White about the long journey that brought them all back together

he time has finally come to dust off your frilly white shirt, don your pirate boots and summon the ‘can do’ spirit of the early 80’s youth in preparation for the eagerly anticipated reunion tour of Spandau Ballet. With all five original members of the seminal band returning to the stage; Tony Hadley, Steve Norman, John Keeble, Martin and Gary Kemp, it seems they have been very much welcomed back with open arms. Their show at the O2 Arena in London this month sold out within 20 minutes of tickets going on sale and fans are eagerly awaiting the release of their new single ‘One More’ in November, the first in 20 years. In their heyday, selling out arena tours was a given: Their audiences were huge. They played Live Aid and sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, with ‘True’, their biggest hit topping the UK chart for four weeks in 1983. Girls pursued them where ever they went, screaming for their attention, and guys used their style as a fashion template to rebel against the establishment. While the prettiest boys in rock, Duran Duran, passed themselves off as international playboys and George Michael sashayed around in his Club Tropicana hot pants, Spandau were at the forefront of the postpunk new Romantic Movement. Their fame and success lasted from 1980 to 1987 when their last album flopped. They went their separate ways, with changes in career direction, marriage, babies and deeply acrimonious fall outs ensuing. In the midst of rehearsing for the arena tour, Tony Hadley frankly explains what it took for the boys to get back on that same stage again: “Its sounds like the biggest cliché - but time is a great healer ... The longer the distance between what happened and the present day, the more forgiving you are about everything.” These are words that many thought the North Londoner would never utter. Even as recently as 2007, Hadley told a newspaper: “I know you should never say never, and bands in the past have said hell would freeze over before they got back together, but in our case I think hell is frozen and we still wouldn’t do it.” The frosty feelings stem from the well-documented court case which saw Tony, drummer John Keeble and saxophonist Steve Norman, take their

childhood friend Gary Kemp to court in a row over royalties. They lost, turning their split into one of the biggest and bitterest feuds in pop, with Gary Kemp describing the High Court fight as, “Like walking away from a car crash.You’re glad to be alive but mortified and shocked by the wreckage.” “I always thought there may be the possibility of the Phil Collins, Genesis scenario, where we would all go off do our solo stuff, come back make a standard album, go to dinner and remain friends,” says Tony. “But then the court case happened that put paid to all of that. When the suggestion of us getting back together came up I deliberated over it for six months, thinking if I really could go back and do it.”

It took two years of negotiations for all of them to get on board and there is a sense from Tony that there was still a lot to be sorted out both on the business side of things, as well as the emotional, before they could take the stage. He explains that there have been, “various kind of conditions and stuff like that which have caused things to change within the band,” but claims that this has ‘made it a much happier environment then it ever was.’ “All the issues were basically between myself and Gary, I suppose,” admits Tony as though this is the first time it has really occurred to him. “However, we drew a line under the past the day we met in The Flask (pub) in Highgate over a couple of pints. We

both said our piece and then agreed that if this tour was going to work, then what’s happened has happened and it was behind us.” The history of the group stretches back to the late 1970s when they were all school friends growing up in Islington. After trying out a few different band names they settled on Spandau Ballet and set about creating an underground buzz on the London club circuit. Emerging from Soho’s ultra cool Blitz club, which was regarded as the birthplace of New Romanticism, they were seen as the musical forefront of a movement that provided some escapism to a generation stuck in the midst of an economic depression. “We were just part of what was going on at the time. The same

was happening in Birmingham with Duran Duran and with Depeche Mode in Basildon, there were pockets of these kinds of fashion/ band things going on and we just happened to be the London end of it,” explains the newly married Muswell Hill resident. “It was great fun, although people do have a tendency to sort of intellectualise a little bit about what was going on.Yes, there were designers and creative people around and we were the musical creative force, but it was also just a bunch of girls and guys going out and having a bloody good time. We didn’t all stand around with a cocktail quoting Jean Paul Sartre.” It seems that despite the bitterness and feuding, the fact that they were childhood friends and had experienced a raise to iconic fame that not many may understand, has always been subconsciously in the back of Tony’s mind. He gives the impression that with age he has become a little less ‘trashy teenager’ and much more mellow about life, although he does admit that he still sees himself as a 28 year old. Of his time spent with the guys in the studio in Henley, where they lived, dined, worked-out together and had a few parties while recording their new album, he is reflective about what helped bring them back together. “Wisdom has a habit of creeping up on you when you get older and there’s a lot more general respect between each. Also, there is not the kind of stress that there was years ago. Of course we hope this album will do well but for everyone it is about having fun and so we are a lot more relaxed as a band,” explains Tony with obvious excitement at what lies ahead for Spandau. “Martin and Gary lost their dad and mum within weeks of each other and this year within the band there has been about seven deaths and it makes you realise that life is too short. There is really nothing to moan about.” The album took six weeks to record, the quickest the boys have ever done it and Tony repeatedly comments on how amazing they all sound: “Bloody joke really, 20 years down the road and everyone is playing better,”

laughs Tony. “We are working with a fantastic producer who has worked with Coldplay and he is amazing. It is all the old Spandau Ballet but completely reworked, some of the songs are unrecognisable.” Having partied together in Cannes and spent long days together rehearsing for their first live performance in 19 years, which aired on the Jonathan Ross Show in April, they seem well and truly bonded and ready to hit the stage. But will everything be the same? “No, we won’t be getting the old outfits out. Number one - they wouldn’t fit, and number two there is nothing worse then seeing a bunch of 50 year old guys trying to look like they are 20 years old,” chuckles Tony at the thought of donning a tartan throw. “I am great believer in growing old reasonably graciously and that doesn’t mean to go to bed with a cup of Horlicks every night bit it does mean doing things with style.” Turning the page on Spandau Ballet, Tony went solo and has spent the last two decades writing, recording and touring with his own band, so he is an old hand at getting the audience going. Although successful in his own right, the Spandau gigs are set to be a little bigger than those that Tony has recently been used to and the boys are ready to raise the roof. “We’re very loud and have always been

a lot bigger live than on record. So this tour is going to be loud and brash. We have never done a greatest hits tour so this is essentially it,” explains Tony who admits he can’t wait to see the audiences reaction. “All the guys are so excited and really up for it. As an artist you sometimes don’t quite realise how much your songs mean to the fans but we are going to make sure everything about this show is going to look a million dollars and give them what they want.” With their two biggest songs – ‘True’ and ‘Gold’ – having stood the test of time, they have influenced the likes of Franz Ferdinand and the Killers. So it appears that these once Bowie Kids, who embraced electronica, frilly shirts and tuxedos, and who gave entertainment to people in a time of crisis and upheaval, eerily reminiscent to today’s atmosphere, will perhaps influence another generation with their sound. Things, it seems, have come full circle for Spandau Ballet, and they are going for gold again. n Spandau Ballet are on tour throughout the UK in October including three dates at the O2 from 20th. CAMDEN PASSAGE

ith the look and feel of a centuries’ old street untouched by the modernisation surrounding it, Camden Passage takes a step back in time with its adorably squat shop fronts and its antique merchandise. However, the world famous antiques market and shops have only been in operation since the 1960s when Islington was in its nascent period of gentrification. Leigh Underhill opened the first antique shop which inspired local businessman, John Payton, to develop his vision of the Passage becoming a universally known antiques centre. With assistance of local shop owners, antique markets were created from bomb sites, and arcades of small shops were built. The first antique market was formed on a bomb site at 122 Islington High Street, levelled and concreted over by a group called The Camden Passage Traders’ Association, which consisted of local shopkeepers and was formed by John Payton.

Antique dealers soon flocked to the area, building up a unique antiques village which transformed Camden Passage into a trendy and significant antiques centre, renowned the world over.Today, the amount of antiques shops in the area has dwindled as landlords opt to let entire buildings to large shops and companies instead of the small antique traders. At the height of the antique market there were five important centres developed within the area, The Georgian Village,The Gateway Arcade, The Angel Arcade,The Mall and The Pierrepont Arcade.The latter is the only one left with its 14 specialist antique shops as the main catalyst for dealers and collectors.The Mall has only recently been gutted, with a large fashion chain currently developing it into a boutique shopping mall, something the antique traders fought hard to stop.

As well as antiques, Camden Passage has become a fashionable area to eat and drink, as well as shop at the boutique and independent shops. A stones throw from Angel tube station, the whimsical passage with its narrow offshoots is the perfect place to spend the day exploring away from the bustling commotion of Upper Street. WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK: Camden Passage plays host some of the most popular and well-liked restaurants and watering holes in the area. The Breakfast Club is popular with locals at the weekends, helping to cure hangovers, satisfy the cravings for a good fry-up as well as offering unusual dishes to help start the day. A few doors down, The Elk in the Woods pub is the perfect place to pop in for a drink or if you want somewhere to head to for a hearty meal. With a Scandinavian theme throughout this attractive gastro there is a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu that has something to keep everyone happy any time of the day. A little pricier but with exceptional food is Fredrick’s. Nestled amongst pretty little shops in Camden Passage, the large, spacious family-run restaurant has become a local institution having been open for 38 years. Known for its sophisticated food and extensive wine list, this is certainly the place to eat if you fancy a special night out. The Camden Head is a Grade II listed Victorian building with its swirly etched glass windows and burgundy velvet banquette seating and is the perfect place to meet up with friends for a few drinks. It also plays host to several comedy nights which attract people from all over London for a good giggle. WHAT TO DO AND SEE: Despite the downturn in the antiques industry, Camden Passage has still retained a host of top dealers thanks to the unique camaraderie of the traders who have ensured that the Passage has survived. Even if you are not interested in antiques it is still fascinating to wonder the cobbled streets and investigate the hidden treasure troves that the shops hold. The non-antique shops are mostly independent which helps keep the area individual and unique with high quality traders selling jewellery, fashion and accessories. Annie’s Vintage Costume and Textiles houses an amazing collection of quirky dresses with Alexander McQueen and Nicole Farhi known to have raided the place for unusual trimmings, accessories and one off pieces, while Kate Moss and Pearl Lowe are regulars. Sadie Frost and Jemima

French have a branch of Frost and French to cater for the fashionistas, while bridal shop Angelica Bridal has recently set up shop offering high-class bridal wear. Complementing the antique furniture dealers are interior shops Raft and Lombok, who offer contemporary furniture and accessories. TEEN ISSUES Author Cathy Hopkins chats to Jenny White about using North London as the back drop to her teen drama and intimidating Catherine Tate ‘look’

own a residential street in Finchley, covered in foliage, lies a secret garden style gate, which opens up to a beautiful grand house. To the left of the garden path, which leads to the front door, lays an open garden encased by high hedges. Tucked into the corner of the garden is a delightfully quaint ‘garden shed’, which, instead of housing the usual gardening tools, is author Cathy Hopkin’s retreat from the world. The shed, although much grander then the customary garden shack, has it doors flung wide open allowing the morning sun to shine in, and is home to a day bed, a ceiling high bookshelf displaying all her work and her three cats. “The first thing I did when I got a decent cheque was get this place,” Cathy says, referring to her tranquil surroundings. With 49 books published in 30 different countries, Cathy Hopkins is best known for her Mates, Dates series about four girls, living in north London and the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. The characters later cross-over into her other popular book series Truth, Dare, Kiss and Promise, with new teenage characters battling adolescence in the Cinnamon Girl and Zodiac Girls series. Not discovering her passion for writing until she was 35 years old, Cathy worked in an array of jobs roles from Rock n’Roll singer with Driv In Rock and the Rockettes to an occupational therapist in a mental hospital. “Writing was just something I tried and I instantly loved it. I spent the first 10 years just trying to find where I fitted,” explains Cathy in her softly spoken tone. “In 2000 I met a lady called Rosemary Bromely who eventually went on to be my agent and she told me I should

be writing for the teenage market because I had the literary voice of a 14 year old. She changed my life forever.” Describing her books as more ‘Hollyoaks than Harry Potter,’ they are aimed at girls aged 11 to 15. But with an audience who is so easily influenced, Cathy makes sure her

books are there to guide them. “I was once told that my books should be in the selfhelp section of book stores. Subjects range from the sublime to the ridiculous such as, ‘how do I know I am a good kisser?’ to, ‘is there a God?’,” says Cathy. “My publisher told me no drugs, sex or swearing but 14 year old girls these days are very savvy, so I

make it so that they talk about it but aren’t seen to be doing it.” Travelling around to schools and talking to her teenage market is one way that Cathy sources her storylines. However, she has found a slightly more relaxing way of keeping up with the kids. “My husband often comes home to find me watching Gossip Girls,” laughs Cathy. “My excuse is that it is my research and secretly I do really enjoy watching it. I watch all the programmes like Skins,The Inbetweeners,The OC and Dawson’s Creek.” An avid user of Facebook, Bebo and Myspace she has recently begun to Tweet on Twitter to keep in touch with her fan base, who regularly write to thank her for writing about subjects that they have experienced. “I get a lot of emails from girls saying that the books have helped them through a crisis and they are glad they are not alone,” says Cathy, who admits that at first touring schools was extremely intimidating. “Year 7 and 8 are so sweet but you get to Year 9 and you have to work a bit harder. They have that Catherine Tate ‘bothered’ look.” However, having just been commissioned to write a new book series, it seems that Cathy’s audience is bothered about her work. Mixologist, and owner of The Hoxton Pony takes time out to chat to Jenny White about winning awards, tea parties and his old man

t has taken four attempts to pin down Gerry Calabrese for his interview with City and Angel, but when I finally get to talk to him he is very apologetic. He explains that for the last few days he has been ‘walking on sunshine,’ since he won the Theme Best New Bar Award, for his new Shoreditch venture, The Hoxton Pony. After the awards, in true bar owner style, he went out and celebrated until the early hours. Ok, so we forgive him. Within minutes of chatting with Gerry his enthusiasm for his work and passion for what he does is so apparent that it is hard to hold a grudge. Instead, I get caught up with the excitement of his win, congratulating him several times during our interview as he gushes over the award. “It is a fantastic accolade to be appreciated by my fellow industry,” beams Gerry. “I am absolutely stoked to bits that they have recognised and appreciated the work that has gone into the place, because there is nothing unintentional here, it has all been very deliberate.”

Having lived in Shoreditch for nine years, Gerry had always loved the artistic and creative vibe of the area and although a good place to party, he felt what was missing was a place where you could get good service and good food in a nice environment and still feel as though you were in a cool location. After six months of gutting what was once the Pool Bar on Curtain Road, he opened The Hoxton Pony in May of 2008. His intention was to create a West End style nightclub at the weekends but with an East End attitude. “We are not snotty about who is coming in as long as they appreciate what they are getting. We put a lot of time into everything that goes on here; we have regular seasonal cocktail menus and all produce is organic and UK sourced. We have 300 spirits on the back bar and we spend a lot of time training and motivating staff to be able to sell the products behind the bar,” explains Gerry. “There is a really good scene for young people in Shoreditch but we are trying to aim for the slightly more mature crowd who appreciate really good music and quality programming.” This is Gerry’s first time owning his own bar but with a wealth of experience

behind him, it seems the mixologist and entrepreneur knows what he is doing. It perhaps helps that his father is Salvatore “The Maestro” Calabrese, one of the world’s leading bartenders and mixologists, who developed his talent for combining flavours at an early age. Owner of Fifty at St James in Mayfair, author of over ten books, one of the world’s leading experts in vintage cognac and until recently president of the UK Bartenders Guild, it isn’t surprising that Gerry refers to his ‘old man’ as ‘a bit of a living legend.’ “My old man is my biggest idol. If I could accomplish a tenth of what my old man has contributed to this industry I would be very, very happy. The ‘old man’ is a pioneer, he is one of the first people to champion mixology and bartender’s knowledge and push the fact that you need to understand spirits and how they are produced and where they come from in order to produce quality drinks. It is an art form,” explains Gerry in his East End tinged accent. “Along the way my old man has been a massive influence and I wouldn’t have the knowledge base that I have without him. I grew up being

surrounded by cocktail shakers and spirit books. I made my first cocktail when I was 12 years old just messing around with juice and a cocktail shaker.” With such a famous father in the business it would have been easy for Gerry just to rely on who his dad was to get him his own bar but this is not how the Calabrese men do things. “I don’t need to prove myself because of who my dad is but obviously I have an ego and I do like to prove myself. I like to do things off my own back and the one thing I get from my father is that I strive for perfection,” says Gerry. “To do this job on a daily basis and to get the best out of your people and deliver a quality offering takes a lot of commitment.” Gerry’s commitment to perfection and detail can be seen in the bar’s décor. There is 19th Century derma dotted around the place, all of which are over 100 years old, and a 180 kilogram lightbox with art work on each side. While a side wall is dominated by the crumpled remains of an old car and the front of the bar is an aluminium sculpture. “The Hoxton Pony is absolutely a creative outlet for me and the whole thing

is a labour of love,” explains Gerry with enviable enthusiasm. “I don’t want it to be another bar, I want people to come and be amazed by it.” And the name? “The Hoxton Pony is anything but your local boozer but I wanted it to sound like a local boozer and people can say, ‘I’ll see you down the Pony.’ It has that cockney connotation because everything here is based on a British theme,” points out Gerry. The grub being one of the most English things about the bar, with bangers and mash, fish and chips, pies and a modern version of the classics such as cockles in malt vinegar on the menu, the food is an important part of Gerry’s concept. Together with one of his oldest friends Andy Pearson, the current UK Bartenders Guild Nation Champion, Gerry puts together an impressive cocktail menu which seems to attract a dedicated female following. There is a seasonal emphasis which allows a regular changing menu keeping Andy and Gerry on their toes. “I don’t understand these places that serve strawberries in December, they are probably genetically modified and full of water,”

Gerry berates with fixation. “The way we do things pushes the bar staff to be inventive, especially going into the winter months when you literally only have apples and pears. Therefore we make our own compotes, syrups and jams and we have five or six different apple cocktails because the contrast between a Granny Smith and Cox is vast – you get a completely different drinking experience.” Described as the marmite of Shoreditch when it first opened because, ‘some people thought it was all a bit too shiny and glossy for Shoreditch and called us pretentious,’ it seems The Pony has found its niche. Offering an experience every time you walk in the door, Gerry has put thought into every aspect. Such as, The Hoxton Pony Tea Party,

which is a favourite with the media types. However, as someone who is a ‘media type’, I question that this doesn’t sound like the usual rock n’ roll fun we like to partake in. “This is as rock n’ roll as it comes,’ laughs Gerry. “It is a contemporary twist on the classic British tradition of afternoon tea and features cocktails from our self-cooling infusion jars - where a bottle of spirit is infused with all sorts of other ingredients and then served in Alice in Wonderland style tea cups. It comes with food pairing delivered on afternoon tea stands. It is completely unique but I wouldn’t suggest having it for afternoon tea!” With cool, kitsch nights, top DJs and a monthly birthday party where at midnight Happy Birthday is sung for no reason, it is clear that Gerry, although dedicated to his dream business, knows how to have a little fun. “Bars are about having fun and it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. 1. Core, dice and muddle Granny Smith apple into a boston glass. 2. Add ALL other ingredients including egg white. Hidden Gem Carrie MitChell disCovers there is More to the Fig & olive than Cakes and CoFFee

ith two quaint little white tables perched outside, a gorgeous Louis XV French sofa sitting invitingly within, and an array of mouthwatering cakes on display in the window, Fig & Olive on Upper Street is one of those charming places that always makes me stop when I walk by… but until now, it is somewhere that I’ve only ever indulged in a quick coffee and a cheeky slice of cake. What I discovered the other day, upon finally visiting for a meal in the evening, is that all this time I’ve been missing out on one of Islington’s many culinary gems. Because, behind the grand looking couch and the distracting pastry selection sits an intimate little restaurant serving fine Mediterranean-influenced dishes in chic, warm surroundings. Seated at a candle lit table and quickly sated with a bottle of Syrah Rosé, a basket overflowing with freshly baked sour dough bread, and a bowl of plump olives, we set about the serious business of selecting our meals from the huge choice of tempting sounding dishes. On perusing the menu, the first thing that is evident is that this place is excellent value for money. With most wines coming in around the £15 mark, and main courses on average between £8 and £12, prices are surprisingly easy on the old purse strings – particularly

given the restaurant’s prime location and sophisticated ambience. We finally settle on starters of asparagus with goat’s cheese and chorizo in an interesting sounding ‘parmesan basket’. The starters appear promptly and I’m delighted with the generous portions. Upon my plate, row upon row of perfectly cooked green asparagus sit alongside a sprinkling of sautéed potatoes and roast tomatoes, topped with the toasted goat’s cheese. It’s all demolished in a matter of seconds, while my guest gets to grips with her parmesan basket. The perfect combination of crispy and chewy, the basket is filled with rich, tasty chorizo, which provides a pleasing match to the punchy cheese. Our mains, which follow soon after, are even more of a hit. My sea bass is served with capers and pesto, adding a lovely salty bite to the delicate taste of the fish, while the garlicky spinach and creamy mash provide the perfect accompaniment. My friend’s stuffed chicken breast is wrapped in crispy flavourful Parma ham, which adds a smoky edge to the smooth flavours of spinach and ricotta. She’s also pleased to find that the dish is served with the same classic sautéed potatoes that she envied of my starter! Despite my straining waistband, there’s no hesitation when our friendly waiter proffers the dessert menu, but I’m met with a more difficult decision when I see

my two favourites on there – crème brûlée and pistachio ice cream. What to choose? My guest helps me out by suggesting we order both and share, but as I get stuck in with unbounded enthusiasm and she sits back and looks on, I feel she may have been humouring me! You’d think after that little feast, I’d be satisfied, but as we leave to burn off a few calories on the walk home, I insist we stop to check out that cake selection by the door. My interior tip is: Always seek good advice about lighting. Whatever the project size or budget, it is fundamental to the success of any interior design scheme. What I love about being an interior designer is the realisation of three dimensional spaces from what starts out as simple sketches and thoughts. My future plans are to develop the business into other areas of interior design including more projects overseas.

The cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, cinemas and markets have an ongoing vibrancy about them. There’s always something going on and it’s never disappointing. When I’m not working I am relaxing with friends or family. My personal interior style is contrasting textures, deep colours and neat forms which are practical and habitable. Despite their suave slimness, LCD TVs have always had one major problem: light. Effectively one huge light that’s always on behind the picture, these flat tellies haven’t been able to produce realistic black. SENSORY OVERLOAD

I It’s big, extremely comfortable and blindingly fast. The fact that it can carry four adults is a bonus. Matthew Carter tries the first four-door saloon from Porsche

’m stationary in the middle of the straight before Bridge Corner on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit and I’ve just been instructed to snick the gear lever into Drive and jam my left foot on the brake. Next, I’m told to bury the throttle into the carpet and, once the revs settle at 5,000 rpm, to move my foot off the brake sharpish while keeping the other one hard in. What happens next literally takes my breath away. This 500hp, two tonne bolide picks itself up and throws itself down the track with such ferocity that

I feel as if I’ve been rabbit punched to the kidneys. But before I can utter any expletive, Bridge Corner itself starts looming large in the windscreen. The bend might be flat in an F1 car, but in a road car I’m not so sure; especially when my skills behind the wheel are factored into the equation. So I step on the brakes… but such is the stopping power of this machine that I wind up braking woefully early. Launch control and ceramic brakes mean it’s time to reprogramme my brain as the limits have just got much higher. Factor 500 rampant horses and a Porsche badge into the mix and

motoring you’d be forgiven for thinking I’m driving the latest iteration of the venerable 911. But you’d wrong. Despite the huge power output, the Grand Prix starts and the awesome anchors, I’m driving a sober fourdoor, four seat businessman’s express. It’s the new Panamera Turbo, the first production Porsche saloon since… well, ever. First things first, this is a proper four seater. While it’s not as roomy as a long wheelbase BMW 7-Series or Mercedes S-Class, it’s not bad. The head and leg room in the rear is such that a top executive could happily sit there reading his FT or sorting out his portfolio while his driver gets on with the A to B stuff. By why would he? This is a driver’s car par excellence and while you might question the need for launch control on something that’s unlikely to spend much of its time hurtling round Brands Hatch on a track day, the combination of Porsche’s traditional driving dynamics and prodigious power makes the Panamera a quite different proposition to the traditional executive saloon. And the fact that it has a pair of useable rear seats and a boot big enough for more than a weekend away means this is the epitome of the Grand Touring car, perfect for crossing mainland Europe in a hurry. It is, in a nutshell, one of the most exciting performance cars on the road. On the open road it is indecently fast while the handling is exemplary with virtually no body roll to upset proceedings. The limit, especially in the four-wheel drive versions is unfeasibly high; before venturing out onto the roads around Northamptonshire, I drove the car over the Porsche Driving Experience. It’s housed within the grounds of Silverstone and it is open to all Porsche owners who want to find out what their car will do. It’s a tight little track so you don’t get higher than third gear, but it’s quick enough

to know that the Panamera will hang on regardless. In fact, it took a special low grip area of the centre before the back end would step out of line. And when it did, it was totally controllable. The only caveat is that this is a large car – long, low and wide – and threading it down some of the UK’s back roads demands a great deal of precision. From a performance point of view, then, the Panamera certainly lives up to the badge on the bonnet. What’s perhaps more remarkable is the comfort it offers. The seats and interior are worthy of anything you’ll find in a luxury limousine, but this is matched by the velvety ride, especially when air suspension is specified. There are three versions of the Panamera available. The range starts with the twowheel drive Panamera S, powered by a naturally aspirated 4.8-litre V8 developing 400hp. The same engine powers the Panamera 4S which, as its name might imply, adds four-wheel drive into the equation. Prices start at £72,266 for the S and £77,269 for the 4S. On paper – and indeed on road – 400hp ought to be sufficient. And that’s was the way it felt… until I sampled the £95,298 Turbo. That substantial price hike pays for more than just a turbocharger and a hundred extra horsepower though. The top model also gets that air suspension system as standard, a superb Bose sound system, the safety of

the Porsche Stability Management system and various other goodies. Ceramic brakes are an extra, though. The Turbo and 4S also have Porsche’s double clutch manual/automatic gearbox as standard – Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe or (thankfully) PDK for short. You can shift gears manually is you really want, but it’s not bad left to its own devices: overtaking downshifts are especially impressive. The only question mark over the system is when pulling away from a standstill when there’s a disconcerting pause before its gets itself together. The official figures show the Turbo will top 188mph and launch itself to 60mph in around 4 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is 23.2mpg though the CO2 figure of 286 g/km won’t gain you membership of Friends of the Earth (though they are many cars far worse than that). So far so good. What we haven’t yet mentioned the elephant in the room: its styling. In fostering a family resemblance with the 911, Porsche designers have effectively had to style the car with one hand tied behind their backs. While it is clearly a Porsche, from some angles it is plain ungainly. If you want to know how to infuse sports car DNA into a four-door saloon successfully, no look no further than the forthcoming four-door Aston Martin Rapide. That said, the Panamera does look far better in the flesh than in photos and once you’re behind the wheel who cares what it looks like anyway? Just remember, though, to check the road ahead is empty if you plan to use the launch control from the traffic lights. 

With her work featuring exclusively on the front cover of this months City and Angel, the avant-garde make-up artist Alex box talks to Jenny White about deconstructing conventional images of beauty and merging the boundaries between fashion and art

lex Box isn’t your usual makeup artist and her work isn’t just about creating a society’s notion of what is beautiful. Instead she is the kind of make-up artist who looks very much outside the confines of her surname and creates something more than just a pretty face to ogle at. That’s why, for instance, she’s the Artistic Director of the cool make-up brand Illamasqua, which trademarks itself as make-up for, ‘the bolder person hiding inside all of us.’ “With some of the Illamasqua range people either love it or hate it and what I aim to create is a range that provokes a reaction,”

explains Alex. “If people are reacting then they are thinking and that is all I care about.” Her desire to provoke a reaction it seems is the reason she has become a world renowned make-up artist. She has won the faith of designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, as well as becoming the one in charge of creating the make-up look for designer Gareth Pugh’s shows. “What I create is sometimes hard to categorise and that is what I really admire about people such as Karl Lagerfeld. He has always been this strange enigma outsider who seems to be doing everything but appears to be omnipresent – I like that.” Alex has taken make-up to a new level, a place where make-up meets art. Now she has collaborated with photographer Rankin to bring together a collection of her work which pushes the boundaries. Her book, out this month, was the catalyst to her first exhibition, also opening this month at Rankin’s new Kentish Town gallery space, Annroy. The 14 images showcase some of the most unconventional ideas about ‘facepainting’ and evolved from Alex, daringly doodling on one of Rankin’s photography books, right in front of the man himself. “I often draw on top of existing beauty images to get the perspectives,” explains Alex, giggling at her boldness. “After Rankin got over the fact I had drawn on one of his books, he really liked what I had done and suggested we do a book together. We would meet one day a week and there were no rules or discussions about each look, they just happen.” The collection combines both Alex’s drawings on top of images of barefaced models, as well as the make-up images. It makes for a thought provoking exhibition of ‘art’. “I want people to see them as paintings

and take away from it the same kind of emotion you would if you were looking at a drawing or a painting,” says Alex. “I want that blurring between make-up, art and drawing because the process is the same as painting for me, just that the canvas is a face.” Having worked with Rankin in the past meant that the whole process, which took a year and half to finish, was a very intimate experience. “What was great about the book was that it was very cathartic, whatever was in me, I could get out of my system,” describes Alex, who started her career as an installation artist and took up being a makeup artist to pay the bills. There is no doubt that her work is striking and powerful and has acted as a personal dairy, revealing her most inner thoughts. But what is in it for those outside the box? “I hope that people who go and see the exhibition are inspired to use make-up differently,” says Alex with an optimistic tone. “In the book there are really full on, really beautiful images and then some which are really dark and incredibly psychedelic. They push the boundaries and play with make-up in a way never really seen. he Candid galleries have been based in Angel for twenty years, supporting artistic disciplines such as jewellery- and shoe-making, illustration, photography and film, and its arts trust has operated as a charity since 1995. As part of its work to promote new talent, Candid also hosts the Islington Contemporary Art and Design Fair, an annual opportunity for new graduates from all over the country, as well as some established artists, to showcase and sell their work. The fair, which is free for all to attend, will be held over four weekends in October (on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of each), with 50 or so exhibitors in each show presenting examples of their work. Artists pay a small fee for their stall, for which they get key exposure and the opportunity to sell direct to shoppers. And, of course, the fair gives the rest of us a fast track to the newest in contemporary art and design. Previous exhibitors include designer Claire Danthois, who focuses on large-scale wood and metalwork structures to create statement pieces from recycled materials. Speaking about the fair, she said. “It was a great experience. I think it’s fantastic for such a range of mediums to be exhibited together in one place. It’s a good opportunity to network and promote my work.” Some exhibitors to look forward to at this year’s event include furniture designers and makers Jason Muteham and Philip

Henderson. Muteham’s clean lines and uncomplicated shapes make the most of wood’s innate elegance, and Henderson’s boxy structures make simple, more contemporary pieces. From 2-4th October painting, sculpture and time-based media are the focus and running simultaneously is the Angel Moving Image Festival, consisting of a loop of short films and animation which visitors can dip in and out of whilst browsing the fair. 9-11th October is all about photography, illustration, graphics and printmaking, whereas those interested in innovative clothing and accessory design should attend from the 16th to the 18th; a fashion show will take place on Friday and there will be stalls all weekend. The final session, from the 23rd to the 25th, will see the designers come to the fore, with a selection of general design products, furniture, ceramics and glass. Candid continues to support emerging talent throughout the year by hosting degree shows and general exhibitions, as well as

providing publicity to potential buyers. The graduate membership scheme encourages artists and designers to hold their own shows at a reduced rate, and there is studio space where they can develop their work. Candid’s other events include a Christmas fair, various functions and reasonably priced life-drawing classes throughout the week, with all-day sessions on Saturdays. r. Samuel Johnson’s famous statement, “… when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life” could so easily have originated from Gillian Burrows, for she has an indefatigable love of the capital which is clearly embedded in her vibrant work. Gillian’s passion for London springs from her move to the East End some 25 years ago when, as a graphic designer, she took the bold step to start a fresh chapter in her life. It involved finding a new home and detaching herself from the world of advertising and designing for the music business to establish her own freelance studio. The move was to be more exciting than she could have imagined for at that point, her painting became inspired by the people she saw daily weaving their way across the Thames and around the streets to places of work, worship or entertainment. Architecture had always captivated her but in Docklands, Gillian found

herself surrounded by both historic and contemporary buildings, the latter emerging day-by-day through the activities of enormous cranes that seemed permanently etched upon the London skyline. Inspiration soared and suddenly it began to flow in a torrent of enthusiasm from Gillian’s head and heart, through her hands and on to paper and canvas. Over time, it manifested itself in a dramatic range of media, scale and style of work that included well observed graphic, pen and watercolour portraits of historic buildings to stylised or abstracted, vibrantly coloured sights and symbols. For example, in CrownWharf Gillian presents an array of multipaned, arched windows glistening against a lichen encrusted facade of an old Docklands building. Her composition, The Endeavour, showing the replica of Cook’s historic ship adjacent to a Thames Sailing Barge is particularly striking because of its contrasting backdrop of St. Paul’s Cathedral and elegant, neo-classical architecture. Her range of work evolved to richly coloured, large scale paintings that combined realism and abstraction, demonstrated by London Lines. This group of London landmarks, heavily outlined in gold, and placed above interpretations of streets and squares seemingly paved with gold makes a strong statement about the city’s wealth. Gillian sometimes chooses to distill London’s rich mix of people, iconic buildings and historic associations into simpler shapes. One example is Shoreditch, a composition

packed with forms and symbols that represent Brick Lane, the once infamous Whitechapel, the much loved Globe Theatre and a traditional London bus to name but a few. At the other end of her stylistic spectrum, Gillian has produced large, powerful, acrylic paintings saturated in colour but devoid of detail, such as Thames Bridges, and an interpretation of the historic nursery rhyme, Oranges and Lemons. The latter cleverly employs the two colours in the title as a prominent backdrop to outlines and titles of the City’s renowned churches that are included in the words of the rhyme. One of Gillian’s new works has been a painting of London’s Olympic Park in its evolving state: Adjoining, overlapping and textured panels of colour are used to define areas and buildings at or identifiable with the venue, including the Thames Barrier and the O2 Arena. Last year she received a commission from the Mile End Hospital Education, Training and Development Centre which became Gillian’s biggest and most challenging work to date – a huge triptych and other large paintings to complement the interior of the new building. The triptych features a stunningly colourful double helix twisting from ground to ceiling, whilst the other pictures reflect the themes of medicine, education and multiculturalism of the people and places that make up Tower Hamlets. Other clients include Lady Maragaret Thatcher, W.H. Smith, the House of Lords and the Duke of Westminster. Gillian’s new paintings will be shown alongside extracts from the film she has made with Alan Tucker, A Picture of East London, documenting the evolution of that part of the capital.
