Game On What a year it’s been for us Brits. All the pageantry, all the tradition, all the ‘sporting competition’. The Olympics provide a fine example, with London 2012 somehow coming to serve as shorthand for the notion of embracing the best of British. We do it all the time really, but lately there’s a discernibly heightened sense of national pride at large in our streets, as amid the flurry to prepare for the Games we call upon our collective skills to celebrate up and down the country. The spotlight is not only on Olympic contenders but creators too: artists, gallery owners, fashion and interior designers... and not forgetting local business owners. East Ender (and long-time Zest favourite) Lee Broom is one such talent. Broom has been busy kitting out the Gold Room at Lancaster House, where the British Embassy is hosting international business luminaries during the Games - read more about it on page 52. We couldn’t resist a sporting fashion tribute either. As the summer appears to have done a runner (in true Olympic style), perhaps it’s time for us to do the same - albeit in more stylish get-up (p22). At the very least, you might fancy a leisurely walk around Marylebone Village. Turn to page 17 for some interesting facts about the area. Meanwhile, we’re stoked to have interviewed the delightful, vintage-dress wearing, baguette-wielding Rachel Khoo - she of The Little Paris Kitchen series. achel Khoo is moments away from taking centre stage at a Gourmet Cookshop demonstration and book-signing and a large crowd – a healthy chunk of which has donned its red lipstick and retro frocks in homage to the chef – has amassed. I hustle through the throng of doll-like ‘mini-mes’ to steal a quick chat with the Little Paris Kitchen presenter, cook and author, a coup (s’cuse the pun) given that her frenetic schedule has already seen her filmed, prepped and photographed all day. Naively I expect her to be slightly ‘rabbit-caught-in-theheadlights’ and dumbfounded by her meteoric rise to fame. She is anything but. Friendly, loquacious and the giggliest of interviewees, there is also a discernibly steely confidence and drive. And one thing is abundantly clear: she is relishing every minute. The story of Croydon-born Khoo’s trajectory to fame is now welldocumented. After graduating in Art & Design from Central St Martins College, Khoo embarked on a career in fashion PR. However, she quickly became disheartened with the London rat-race and, armed with only 800 euros and GCSE-level French, set-off to Paris for a more creative

“Cooking should always be enjoyable, it should be a pleasure, not a chore” lifestyle, enrolling at the famous Le Cordon Bleu cookery school. In spite of the rom-com style scenario, Khoo’s bold move was nothing if not a challenge; nonetheless, various parttime jobs led to small cooking workshops and dinner parties for friends in her little apartment led to its rapid evolvement into Paris’ most sought-after pop-up restaurant, with her new irresistibly bohemian lifestyle in the diminutive space becoming the basis for her book and series, The Little Paris Kitchen. Though, as she says, “it’s really good that the BBC gave me the opportunity to film in my kitchen, it was definitely more of a challenge – I know now why most shows are filmed in a big studio!” How, I wonder, did it come about that the broadcasters approached her in the first place? “I approached them!” she laughs. In fact, it was Penguin who first snapped up her outline in 2010 – “they immediately loved the idea, they really got the concept,” she explains – and after discussing the idea of turning the book into a television series, Khoo found Plum, a small independent production company who helped turn the idea into reality. “I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve not had to change anything, from start to finish; it’s been

what I really wanted,” she says. Indeed, the notion of not having to compromise becomes a recurring theme in our conversation; Khoo’s imitable style – from her wardrobe to her mismatched crockery – is totally her, without even the smallest whiff of an orchestrated, clever media construct. Viewers have been charmed not only by Khoo’s effervescence, but her hearty, contemporary French recipes also. Though she acknowledges that she was never ‘particularly fussed’ by French cuisine, it was her love of pâtisseries that led her to Paris. How has her new homeland affected her eating habits? “In Paris, access to fresh food is a lot easier”, she says, “each neighbourhood has fresh food markets twice a week, and even when I was on an au pair budget I could afford to shop at them. It’s also a very multicultural city, which influences the food.” She pauses before uttering what is evidently a variant on her mantra: “Cooking should always be enjoyable, it should be a pleasure, not a chore.”-- Which is exactly the kind of joie de vivre that has propelled her and her little Paris kitchen onto our screens and into our hearts.

t comes as no surprise that one of London’s most exclusive inner city neighbourhoods has such a pedigree history. Once a tiny village known as St Mary of the Bourne, bordered to the north by Henry VIII’s Royal Hunting Park of Regent’s Park, Marylebone became a site of architectural development in the early eighteenth century under the guidance of leading Georgian aristocrats. Edward Harley and his wife Lady Margaret Cavendish saw the need for fashionable housing north of Oxford Street and commissioned architect John Prince to create a grid of streets leading from landmark Cavendish Square. Three hundred years later, the dueling grounds of Marylebone Fields have given way to a string of designer shops, restaurants and salons among the Grade II listed buildings, but the area has retained a distinctly artistic heritage. Marylebone’s famous residents over the years include Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, and more recently, the Beatles, with both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr occupying flats

here in the 1960s, along with the Apple record label quarters run from Wigmore Street. Although only a stone’s throw from the busiest part of the West End, Marylebone has continued to cultivate a genteel ambiance, partly due to its steep property prices, and is celebrated as a village inside London. A short walk away from the perennially busy Marylebone Lane is one of the most beautiful streets in London, Chiltern Street, which boasts an array of bridal shops and gentleman’s outfitters, reflecting an air of Edwardian refinement. In recent years the area has also become something of a mecca for those seeking high-end beauty products and treatments. Marylebone is home to several famous beauticians including Bharti Vyas, Vaishaly Patel and Eve Lom. New additions to the area include the award-winning Content Beauty & Wellbeing organic skincare salon and a flagship branch of Skin Health Spa.

With beauty stockists such as Space NK and Fresh, and perfumiers Diptyque, Le Labo and L’Artisan Parfumier tucked away on the High Street, Marylebone’s Georgian streets feature frequently on lists of London’s best kept beauty secrets. The village has plenty to offer the foodie flaneur, with its many specialist food shops and a regular farmer’s market. The regular Cabbages and Frocks market in St Marylebone Parish Church grounds provide additional artisan food stalls along with fine jewellery, crafts and vintage clothes. Marylebone continues to hold the mass commercialisation of central London firmly at bay, and provide visitors and residents with an historical oasis of discreet luxury.

We catch up with Mimi Berry, founder of the eponymous leather handbag and accessory brand, to discuss east London’s ever changing fashion scene and Lanvin heels... I studied Fashion at Central St Martins and as a teenager I wanted to do millinery, then switched to fashion. Handbags happened by accident. Your showroom and studio are still situated in Bethnal Green. What do you think of the fashion scene in east London and how has it changed in the 11 years Mimi Berry has been running? It has developed and become more commercial. Brick Lane is the new Camden in a sense. Things are moving north and further east, which is exciting, however. What inspires your designs? Necessity and function. I also ask and listen to my customers. That’s crucial. Tell us the story of your business, which was set-up in 2001. How did you start the line? From a very early age I was interested in fashion and I was really obsessed with making things as a child. I graduated in 1999 and started making and selling accessories 2 years later. Have you always been interested in fashion and, in particular, accessories?

How would describe your own personal style? It’s certainly grown up since St. Martins, and I’ve become more traditional in many ways. What’s your most expensive thing in your wardrobe? Easy. A pair of Lanvin heels. I saw, I bought. I never regretted.

What are some of Mimi Berry’s all time best-selling pieces? The Peggy and Elsie satchels. Also the Eric bag. Can you tell us about the Mimi at Tate range. How were you approached for this? Mimi for Tate has been going for about 5 years. I was originally approached as they were looking for a new British leather accessories designer, and the team at Tate had seen my ranges in a few stores in London. It has been a great collaboration.

I’ve had a few variations of facials in the past, but the opening statement from Jenny, my friendly therapist - ‘we are about to go on a sensorial journey’ - assures me that I’m to discover something a little different. Roxy Beauty is a smart new salon on the bustling Finchely Road, nestled in the middle of Hampstead. A sleek hair salon comprises the main space of the building, which disguises the surprise treatment rooms on the lower level. Neat and calming with a subtle soundtrack of classical music (much better than whale songs or panpipes), I rest flat on a bed and have three different scents wafted under my nose and am asked to identify which one I am most drawn to. The holistic brand Aveda is used at Roxy and their products and treatments focus on restoring balance to the mind and body by engaging all five senses. The botanical products smell divine and Jenny is methodical in her approach to the facial; applying light pressure, various creams, hot flannels and sprays over the course of a very relaxing hour. It’s indulgent, but at the same time feels like I’m putting goodness back into my skin; a goodness that commuting and London life strips away. Helen Baron trials microdermabrasion and omnilux light therapy... and finally learns her skin type

here are some things you don’t discover until your thirties. Before then, your priorities are different. Partying takes precedence and, while most young people have skin worries at some point, few are the twenty-somethings who casually drop lines like ‘my facialist says’ into everyday conversation. Only in your third decade does encroaching age and its hooligan horde of tell-tale signs - crow’s feet, laughter lines and spider veins - allow you to see things differently. This month the virtues of microdermabrasion were revealed to me. For years I have been battling with temperamental skin that’s subject to outbreaks (especially around PMS time) and suffers from being oily but dehydrated. It has taken until now - and my visit to Destination Skin - to find that I can improve my chances of clearer skin and that so far, my cleansing regime has not been helping matters. It’s not just that I found microdermabrasion to be one of the most effective treatments you can try; it’s that I also learnt more about my skin type. The process itself uses suction and grain to remove the topmost layers of dead skin cells, thus enhancing the production of collagen (the main constructive protein found in animal connective tissue). The natural cubic salts not only exfoliate but have cleaning properties - killing bacteria and leaving the skin more open to absorb vitamins. It can be used in conjunction with numerous prescription facials, skin peels or laser, IPL and rejuvenation treatments. My practitioner Bridget, recommends for example, the Agera Vitamin C Peel - a catch-all wonder-treatment that can improve ageing skin, fine lines and

there, Bridget has unravelled the reason behind my latest outbreak. The skin is a little red and sore for about 6 hours afterwards and you’re advised to avoid make up the next day (or apply a mineral base), but skin is left silky smooth, younger and plumper-looking. And unlike facials which claim to achieve the same effect, there’s no blemish surge afterwards. I come away with a bottle of the magic Dermaquest Advanced B5 serum; formulated with Sodium Hyaluronate it holds 1000 times its molecular weight in hydration - exactly what I need. In this way, moisturising less is actually more. On my next trip to Destination Skin, I try the Omnilux Light Therapy. If you haven’t heard of this amazing procedure, take note. And if, like me, you sometimes resort to sunbeds in an attempt to deal with outbreaks of bad skin, it’s time to stop. I was aware of the dangers, but the lack of a decent alternative meant I often felt it was the only option; now I know better. The therapy is a bit more expensive than a sunbed, yes - but it’s worth it. The benefits are the same - the treatment harnessing the power of light to clear acne, allowing active ingredients to penetrate the skin - but the harmful ultraviolet rays are omitted. Not only is the therapy used for treating acne, it can reverse the negative side effects of sunbeds, correcting signs of ageing while lifting and tightening saggy skin. What could be more perfect? I’ve since vowed never to crisp myself on a sunbed again - and I can’t wait to see the effects of this new regime take hold. Maybe next time I’ll book a facial with the treatment... power to the wow.

Thought to have a profound effect on keratinization (the 28-day cycle whereby the live cells or keratinocytes at the bottom layer of the epidermis gradually become harder as they work their way up to the surface), AHAs improve the overall look of the skin and are often used in chemical peel procedures. When I tell Bridget that I usually use a Laboratoire Garnier moisturiser I am duly ticked off - she tells me that products like that slide off the skin so that while they claim to be oil-free, that are also missing the point completely - to hydrate. More bad news - rich creams can prove too greasy and only serve to congest the pores - and

How did you come to work at Trishna as a sommelier? I joined Trishna almost two years ago. I started off as front of house and back office and during that time I was working closely with our sommelier. I’ve always been passionate about wine and I soon realised that that was the route I wanted to take. Do you have to train to become a professional sommelier? There is no official stage to be able to have the title of sommelier, but there are a number of certification levels available. I study at the Wine & Spirit Education Centre (WSET). Right now I’m at the diploma level, after that it’s the Master of Wine. What’s the course like? It’s quite fun actually. The teachers go through grapes, regions and wine-making techniques and they touch on food and wine-matching as well. The good thing about the course is that in order to learn how to pick out the different components in wine they make you taste quite contrasting bottles so that you can figure it out and see the comparisons.

You have a huge cellar at Trishna, what are some of your most popular bottles from the wine list? We have over 200. I’m really keen on Austrian wine with Indian food - a match made in heaven. Do you find that people don’t think to pair Indian food with wine as they would with say, Italian cuisine? Absolutely. People will always think to order beer or lassi. Straight away you’re fighting against that. Our food is not typical Indian food, it’s a little bit lighter, so that makes a difference. How do you decide on what to stock in the Trishna wine cellar? The first thing to consider when choosing wine is ‘will it go with our food?’ I work with our chef and recommend a wine with every dish so to be able to do that I would have had to taste the dish with certain wines. I’m quite into buying unusual wines but of course, you have to be able to explain it to the customer and sell it to them in order to take them out of their comfort zone.

What do you think are some up-andcoming countries in the wine industry? At the moment I’m very keen on Greek wines. Actually, India is up and coming as well. There’s a lot of rubbish Indian wines but they are getting better, so that’s quite exciting.

The Italian Job Allen Hutchinson grabs a slice of Italy in Shoreditch

mong the glut of Vietnamese restaurants nestling shoulder to shoulder on the rapidly gentrifying Kingsland Road, the owners of Amici Miei are creating a little Italy that locals are raving about. This is in addition to their pizza and pasta takeaway joint, Due Sardi, right next door. The name Amici Miei means ‘my friends’, and seems aptly amiable for a restaurant that prides itself on authentic home cooking and a welcoming, informal atmosphere. Situated just a few minutes’ walk from Old Street tube and Hoxton overground station, amid the hangouts and bars of trendy Shoreditch, the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere is apparent as soon as you walk through the door, with its warm and nonetoo-fussy dining room tastefully enlivened by exposed brickwork and wooden tables painted in pastel shades. On the night of our visit, my companion and I were greeted and shown to our table where we were immediately presented with homemade focaccia all’aglio, a bowl of emerald green olives and delicious olive oil imported from Sicily, of which the owners are especially proud. This simple but superb fare was the perfect introduction to Amici Miei’s approach -great ingredients and classic dishes prepared with an expert eye for quality and flavour. Our table for two felt cosy and intimate - no mean feat in a restaurant buzzing with larger parties happily sampling the very reasonable wine list. Indeed, sitting beside a window and occasionally glancing up at the veritable catwalk of forward-thinking fashionistas and business people scurrying past, my mind was cast back

to summer holidays spent in Italy, enjoying the simpler things in life. The menu offered the usual pasta and pizza dishes, seeming to walk the line between rustic home-cooking and contemporary invention, with plenty of modern twists and adventurous flourishes. The staff seemed knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the food - a welcome change from the rough and tumble of so many eateries in the area. I began with calamari (perfectly cooked batter: thin, crisp and well seasoned) while my dining partner cooed over her burrata served with a Sicilian caponata. I felt no shame in leaning right over the table to help her dispatch the sizeable portion. The cheese was fluffy, creamy and light; the bed of aubergine and celery gently seasoned with sweetened vinegar provided the perfect bed-fellow. For our mains, we were fortunate to be able to sample a selection of the freshly prepared homemade pasta dishes, with the alla campidanese, spaghetti primavera and scialatielli alla pecatora (a traditional, home-cooked Neapolitan pasta served with seafood) being of particular note. We finished with a shared helping of homemade profiteroles and vanilla ice cream, washed down with a pair of delectable espresso Martinis. Amici Miei is a welcome and successful addition to a part of town usually synonymous with cuisine from further afield than Italy. What the restaurant offers is simple, well-sourced, affordable and inspired food - which is sure to amount to an ever-increasing number of dedicated patrons.

TR AV EL THE HOTEL: Prospect House is in the old part of Padstow, which means the four-room bolthole, attached to the larger St Petroc’s Hotel and Bistro next door, has delightful vistas over the estuary and old town. This minute gem is the latest addition to the highly-regarded group of hotels owned by Rick and Jill Stein, the celebrated chef’s former wife but current business partner. Wonderfully private, secluded and cosy, Prospect House is that very rare of finds: contemporary, yet respectful of its location and very pretty indeed. Nothing seemed too troublesome for the attentive staff: a WIFI issue, for example, was solved instantly by an ‘IT department’. It’s definitely not a simple B&B – this is a slick operation.

THE BEDROOMS: Styled by Jill Stein, there is much to envy in these solid, comfortable rooms. At the centre of the oak floor, a large fireplace divides the room to create two spaces: a bedroom and sitting room. There are LCD TV screens, while entertainment and temperature can be controlled by a nifty touch-screen control panel. But that’s where the modernity stops; French windows open to the sounds of the sea and within minutes, you’re back ensconced in rustic Cornwall.

Tranquillity itself. It is clear there are only four bedrooms and bathrooms in this property, as the attention to detail is precise and perfect throughout. Choose to linger in the large bath set up in front of a gardenfacing window, or relax in the walk-in rain-shower, whose powers to soothe are helped along by the Molton Brown products that line its walls. The heated mirrors bring another comforting level of sophistication.

Although it can be flooded with tourists during the summer, Padstow is also a working fishing port which keeps itself busy all year round. Visitors can be forgiven for expecting a ‘Stein-opoly’, but there are plenty of dining alternatives (there’s a surfeit of Cornish pasty shops and authentic pubs).

The main foodie event is, of course, The Seafood Restaurant. Over a private dining lesson with Stein himself, he lamented today’s obsessive pursuit of Michelin stars, convincing us there is more to gastronomy than laboratory precision. His self-evident passion and natural ability with food manifests itself in dishes such as hot shellfish with parsley, chilli, olive oil, garlic, while the standout local cod and chips typifies the simple approach that serves him so well. The atmosphere in The Seafood Restaurant is set against the informal feel of the central bar, where the stools are ever-populated.

With endless views across the azure waters below, there couldn’t be a more beautiful place to get to grips with Italian gastronomy than at Mamma Agata’s School in Ravello. The words ‘hidden gem’ come emblazoned on all aprons, and couldn’t better suit this Amalfi Coast school, run by a trio made up of matriarch Agata and her daughter and sonin-law, Chiara and Gennaro. The school also doubles as their family home and together, they effortlessly engineer a day of fun, laughter, teaching and innumerable rounds of exquisite food. It’s incomparably scenic too; to access the school’s entrance, guests have first to walk through the family’s rich and heavenly orchards, lemon trees and tomato plants. In the house, the large table in the kitchen is laden with tempting dolce al limone to tuck in to when you fancy. A day with Agata (who

cooks) and Chiara (who usefully translates) is nothing short of unique: both the kitchen and the open veranda dining area overlook the stunning coast below. Coming up Trumps David Allard finds himself in a New York state of mind as he checks into Trump International and goes in search of the city’s lesser known hotspots and hang outs

s a New York neophyte, no amount of hours spent watching Big Apple-based dramas can prepare one for the moment the breathtaking Manhattan skyline looms for the first time. And so it is that, all anticipation and with a myriad of now iconic cinematic scenes swimming around my head, I am delivered in to New York’s feverish heart, in amongst the skyline – that glut of skybruising buildings that are so endlessly destroyed and invaded by aliens in Hollywood blockbusters – that has long been etched into my consciousness, direct to Trump International Hotel and Tower New York. It’s one of the many – but perhaps the most iconic – residences which make up billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump’s vast empire. First impressions? On the outside, it’s just another skyscraper (even the novice acclimatises quickly); inside is quite a different story altogether. Its sumptuous interior, all golds

and twinkling chandeliers, is a world away from the hysteria of the jammed streets outside. To contextualise, Trump International is positioned on the upper west side corner of Central Park, next to Columbus Circle and the Time Warner shopping centre. In short, it’s a Mecca for high-end shoppers and fine diners, and in a city where one wants to be in the

thick of the bustling action at all times, the 52-storey Trump Tower couldn’t have bagged a better spot. The army precision with which the improbably coiffed Donald Trump has become synonymous is visible throughout the hotel, and nowhere is this attention to detail more in evidence than in our city view suite on the 17thfloor: expect the gamut of ultra luxe touches, from a Jacuzzi and iPod stereos to the floor-to-ceiling windows which frame a gorgeous view across the city. As bewitching as the hotel is, I venture out to discover one of the world’s most thrilling metropolises, and in a city which houses an overwhelming glut of sights, I’m thankful for the City Pass voucher book which, for $89, got me into all the big-hitting tourist attractions (think Empire State, Guggenheim, Statute of Liberty et al). ‘The army precision with which the improbably coiffed Donald Trump has become synonymous is visible throughout the hotel, and nowhere is this attention to detail more in evidence than in our city view suite on the 17th-floor’ round some of the lesser-known hot spots, roundly proving that New York City’s gems aren’t always obvious. First up, he (naturally) takes us to some fantastic hidden cocktail bars. At Booker & Dax in the East Village we are presented with some seriously theatrical – and high school science class-reminiscent – cocktails; Death & Co is as exclusive and achingly cool as its intriguing name – which alludes to the Volstead Act of 1919 – would suggest; and finally we stop at the hard-to-find PDT (‘Please Don’t Tell’), where the exclusivity message is somewhat explicit. The

latter is the archetypal New York hang out; not only does it sit adjacent to a weiner restaurant called Crif Dogs, making late-night munchies a breeze to shift, but access to PDT can only be gained via an antique phone booth in the corner of the restaurant. Once you step into it, you’re obliged to pick up the telephone, ask the doormen to check for your booking, and if you’re granted a green light, a hidden door from within the booth will let you in. The entry system is a treat and an experience in itself. Cocktail quaffing is famously appetiteinducing work, so we head to Bleecker Street

and John’s Pizzeria, whose owners have been baking in brick ovens and over coal fires since 1929. But as any foodie knows, New York has no dearth of knock-your-socks-off excellent restaurants; for the legendary authentic Big Apple burger, try Brooklyn Diner (where hot dogs lobster rolls are also a must-try), and for a pre-theatre snack, try Sardi’s off Broadway, where the steaks are as good as the caricatures of celebrities that adorn the walls. Still not sated, we make our way back to Trump International to dig in to pudding and a night-cap at the eponymous, Michelin-starred Jean Georges restaurant, before a late-night dip in the gargantuan swimming pool, and a soporific last view of the city before bed, where there is a note, alerting us to the weather for the forthcoming weekend: sunny and warm. Perfect conditions for scaling all those remaining skyscrapers.

t’s not hard to see why Lee Broom is so admired. His designs capture the zeitgeist: perfect pieces of popular culture that mix past and future, traditional and forward-thinking in a style that’s as characterful as it is contemporary. It makes sense that he trained as a fashion designer before he began to focus on interiors; similarly unsurprising is the fact that some part of his time in fashion was spent under the tutelage of Vivienne Westwood. One look at Broom’s Salon collection, its furnishings upholstered in soft hues and adorned with stud details, shows that his time with the punk legend was not wasted. Being named Designer of the Year at the British Design Awards in November 2011 put Broom firmly on the interiors map, though he it’s by no means his only award - he’s won an impressive 17 in total, while launching five furniture and lighting collections and designing over 40 retail, restaurant and bar spaces (including Old Street’s Night Jar). Frequently lauded in the press and met with pretty much constant critical acclaim, Broom’s style is intimately interconnected with the wider world of fashion - as a result, the fashion world adores him. His design for Topman’s personal shopping suite even saw him nominated for yet another British Design Award late last year. Now, Broom has turned his attention to The Lancaster House, where the British Embassy will be hosting global business leaders during the Olympic Games. Broom is one of a handful of select designers (including Terence Conran and Ross Lovegrove) invited to decorate the landmark building - the 19th century house will be transformed into a showcase for modern British art and design. he first six months of 2012 have been extremely active with the demand from buyers still outstripping supply and consequently house prices in the area continue to rise. Muswell Hill has certainly kicked the nationwide trend in the market over the last two years, due to a number of factors. It still provides good value for those seeking a large family house, certainly in comparison with our more illustrious neighbours. An abundance of quality primary and secondary schools classed as outstanding by Ofsted is another reason why families move and stay in Muswell Hill, as well as the obvious appeal of the areas vast range of individual shops, boutiques, deli’s and cafe/restaurants as well as the open recreational spaces of Alexandra Park and Palace and Highgate and Queens Woods all contributing in making it a nice place to live. One of the great things about Muswell Hill properties is that there is no such thing as a ‘typical property’, the area is prominently Edwardian built with a good selection of conversions and purpose built flats, from the small mews type house to the mid terraced and large double fronted family homes. What about the rental market? Well there is good news for homebuyers and investors, the rental yields continue to rise, driven by an increased number of people renting between purchasing and also due to the lack of affordable mortgage finance for those with anything less than a 25% deposit. Landlords are also benefiting with longer letting contracts of anything up to three years. I expect the market to slow during the Olympic Summer but have no doubt it will pick up and remain strong to the end of the year.
