A non-profit initiative established by that East London stalwart, the Old Truman Brewery, Fashion East was set up with a view to nurturing emerging young fashion designers through the difficult early stages of their career. With Lulu Kennedy at the helm, selecting the designers alongside a panel of industry experts, it has proved an invaluable asset to the capital’s fashion output and supported such big hitters as Richard Nicoll, Holly Fulton, Meadham Kirchoff, House of Holland and Jonathan Saunders (to name but a few). With its support for menswear designers, it was also undoubtedly pivotal in the launch of the inaugural London Men’s Fashion Week this past June. And with London Fashion Week back on the horizon this month, it seemed pertinent to celebrate our area’s outstanding contribution to the style business with our first London-centric fashion shoot, including designers like PPQ and Hemyca. You can also head over to page 16 to read about Fashion East alumna and Dalston resident Emma Cook. It’s nice to know that the number of designers manufacturing in Britain is on the increase, as provenance gains popularity and consumers realise that it’s better to buy fewer, more timeless pieces than loads of fashion landfill. One man well-known for his sartorial prowess is Faris Badwan. Lead singer of new-wave indie band The Horrors (as well as one half of the critically acclaimed Cat’s Eyes), Badwan, who lives in Whitechapel, also finds time to pursue his interest in the visual arts. He will be exhibiting Creatures of Colour (as the name suggests, it’s his first foray into colour) at The Strand Gallery from the 18th of this month (p.25). It’s in the diary. On page 38, meanwhile, Gemma Billington beds down at The Mandeville Hotel and is soon ensconced in a booth at the excitingsounding Reform Social and Grill restaurant. It’s a very British state of affairs (without any cloying kitsch touches), so if you like your steak followed by lashings of Bakewell tart, this is the place to head. Finally, if the tardy (and let’s face it, rather non-committal) appearance of some good weather has got you hankering after some holiday action, check out page 43 for our UK travel page, which this month features the charming Scilly Isles. And if that leaves you wanting even more Brit inspiration, take a look at our glamping round-up. We’ve highlighted some of the country’s glamourous camping hotspots, so you can experience the great outdoors with all the comforts of a plush hotel.

Dorset Square Hotel

We’re rather chuffed that this Marylebone institution has returned, extensively refurbished and now a jewel in the crown of the prestigious Firmdale Hotel collection. The impressive Regency townhouse has 38 bedrooms individually designed by interiors authority Kit Kemp, many of which look out onto the leafy private garden square. A welcome addition to the area’s growing range of démodé hotels, Dorset Square is also of historic importance: it stands on the site of Thomas Lord’s first cricket ground. We love the sporadic cricket motifs that pop up throughout the hotel. firmdalehotels.com/london/dorset-square-hotel 39-40 Dorset Square, NW1 6QN

East London Furniture are always ahead of the game with their über-cool minimalist interiors products - and they’ve ticked yet another box with their Falkrik Floor lamp. Ladurée Macarons

These rather appealing boxes of aptly named Incroyables are studded with lucky clover charms and contain four lipsmacking flavours - strawberry candy, lemon and lime, violet and the first, original almond flavour. Filled with creamy guimauve (aka the macaron’s melt-in-the-mouth centre), they’re a perfectly decadent afternoon treat - and Marie Antoinette’s confection of choice, of course. laduree.com, 14 Cornhill EC3V 3ND

Zeo Cocktails

Zeo is a new drinking experience for those who want to enjoy a night out with a clear head - and a welcome, grown-up alternative to bland or sickly non-alcoholic drinks. A blend of wild berries, fresh herbs and spices, Zeo promises unique sensory effects; mix it as you would a cocktail and judge for yourself. Available online, seekzeo.com, and at Golden Bee, Singer Street EC1V 9DD

Sheva Clutch

This super cute bag by Rocio reminds us why it’s always wise to have a clutch on stand-by. If you do choose to go strapless, this little wonder is sure to fit the bill. £450, gift-library.com

A Good Roast

Calling all coffee snobs: Allpress Roastery in Shoreditch is our new obsession. The company uses only the highest quality Costa Rican beans and next generation roasting technology for maximum flavour and, although of Kiwi origin, the cafe has a coolly functional Berlin-esque feel to it, all perfunctory Formica table tops and counters arrayed in newspapers - so you can up your daily news as well as your caffeine intake. Mademoiselle Julie at The Barbican Theatre 20TH - 29TH SEPTEMBER

The Barbican Theatre welcomes Juliette Binoche as she takes the eponymous role in August Strindberg’s Mademoiselle Julie. Commissioned by the Festival d’Avignon and directed by Frédéric Fisbach, this muchanticipated interpretation of the celebrated 19th century play explores the emotionally complex relationship between the sexes. Fisbach has given the material a contemporary twist with a modern setting that seeks to make the emotional dilemmas of the past relevant to the present. barbican.org.uk, Silk Street, EC2Y 8DS

LOCA L SPOTL IGH T ISLINGTON’S N1 CENTRE In a year of national pride and jubilation, the N1 Centre celebrates its 10th anniversary. Designed by architects Chapman Taylor Partners and completed in April 2002, the 150,000 sq ft centre is home to shops and eateries as well as the 02 Academy music venue and a Vue ten-screen cinema, making it a central part of the local community. The now iconic Wings & Halo sculptures were designed by Wolfgang and Heron following a highprofile national competition sponsored by Delancey and The Architecture Foundation. Inspired by the Angel, Islington, they mark the entrances, the stainless steel halo suspended just above the Upper Street entrance. Synonymous now with the centre, the sculptures have helped cement the venue as a local, beloved establishment. Here’s to the next 10 years...

Health food enthusiasts rejoice: last year, Itsu came to the N1 centre bringing with it a seriously exciting menu of low-carb lunch options. We’re talking Asian-inspired noodle pots, special miso soup, sushi boxes and salad sandwiches, all freshly made on site with butterfly-light, delicious ingredients. Rabbitfood this is not.

The N1 Centre routinely pulls out the stops with its programme of special pop-ups and events, which have included a farm for the kids, beaches and the amazing English country garden, which allowed for a spot of cloud-gazing. Add to this events like Fashion Night or the free weekly yoga classes and you can see why the centre is more popular with locals than ever.

Ready, steady...

Cook

As London Fashion Week returns this month, we pin down Fashion East alumna and print pioneer, Emma Cook WORDS: HELEN BARON

E

mma Cook is a fashion blog favourite, admired by an ever-growing legion of style devotees for her whimsical, art nouveau-inspired creations, her signature prints and her preoccupation with wildlife and natural elements. Cook has played an important part in the ‘print revolution’ of the last couple of years, alongside contemporaries like Mary Katrantzou, Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders and Erdem. Now, her creations are stocked at Liberty, Start Boutique and Matches (among others), as well as by online giants Net-a-Porter and ASOS - and the list is growing all the time. Cook took a fairly traditional path into fashion – studying the craft at Brighton University and following up with a Masters degree at London’s prestigious Central St. Martin’s. The ‘anti-establishment’ approach of the latter school might go some way to explaining why it has become such a major fashion player, seemingly unparalleled in its ability to nurture and launch the careers of fashion’s future stars. Cook agrees that her

education was the perfect starting point. “You don’t get that kind of teaching anywhere else really,” she says. “I went on to intern at Donna Karan in New York and Martine Sitbon in Paris.” Fellow graduates from Cook’s year include Peter Jensen and Roksanda Ilincic, both of whom are similarly well-known on the fashion circuit. Cook herself has been in demand one way or another since completing her degree. She was able to sell her own samples while interning and her eponymous label followed rapidly, the success of which must surely have bolstered her confidence, difficult as it is for up-and-coming designers to sustain their own brand. Cook’s early customers were not the only ones to pick up on the appeal and quality of her designs; in 2002 she was one of three womenswear designers chosen to show her autumn/winter collection via Fashion East – the initiative established by Brick Lane’s Old Truman Brewery in 2000. The scheme thrust Cook in front of the world’s press and international buyers in

town for London Fashion Week - as well as putting her work on display in showrooms in Paris. It was valuable exposure for the young designer, and it was further boosted by the support she received from the NewGen scheme. In fact, as a three-time winner of the award and valued member of its alumni, last February Cook was among twenty designers asked to create their own limited edition t-shirt to mark NewGen’s ten year anniversary. Sold through Topshop (a sponsor of both Fashion East and NewGen) during London Fashion Week, all proceeds went to homelessness charity Centrepoint. The initiative was a huge success, and the list of designers involved reads likea guide to who’s hot in fashion right now. Cook’s studio is in Dalston and East London is home turf - in those early days, did it feel special to operate under the auspices of Fashion East, and to work alongside local luminaries? “It was very exciting,” she agrees, “to be so fresh out of college and be part of something like that and surrounded by likeminded people. I was only with them for

“You don’t get that kind of teaching anywhere else really... I went on to intern at Donna Karan in New York and Martine Sitbon in Paris.”

one season but Lulu [Kennedy, director of Fashion East] was fantastic.” Evidently, the sponsorships and support she received helped to get Cook’s career off the ground and kick-started a continuing relationship with Topshop, a brand of which she speaks very highly. “I’ve lost count of the number of collaborations we’ve done,” she says. “I’ve teamed up with them on and off for years, they’re a great group of women to work with.” Although the label has only become more popular - and busier - down the years, Cook no longer shows at London Fashion Week. “We’ve been in operation for over ten years,” she says, “Our shows were full of intricate pieces with so many embellishments. In the end we decided not to do so much handiwork so as to make the line more affordable.” It’s the kind of insight a young designer needs if they’re to survive in the current market, and it’s echoed when I ask her if working in print allows for greater creative freedom. “Print is a great way to get across a signature look whilst keeping the product

affordable so that people can actually wear it.” She adds that she often works with silk because its easy to wear and can be used to great effect with print. I grabbed a sneak peek at the AW12 collection just before it went on sale this month and loved it (of course). The new range is heavy on print but the focus this time is less on the fanciful. Cook describes it as being quite ‘poppy’ – the prints are bold and make an instant impression. “We’re much more consistent as a brand now,” she adds. “We darted around a lot in terms of style when we were doing shows, which to a certain extent you have to do. Now I hope we are known as the brand to go to for fabulous, signature print.” Amen to that. It seems that Cook has found her niche.

The Emma Cook AW12 collection is available in stores now. emmacook.co.uk, Shacklewell Studios, 18 Dalston Lane, London, E8 2EZ

FASHION NEWS DESIGNER OF THE MONTH: Lu Flux

Ethical fashion doesn’t have to be dour - it’s not all about cheesecloth, sacking and hemp. So says designer Lu Flux, and she should know: the Hackney resident specialises in sustainable clothing brimming with her own unique brand of fun and folklore. Employing techniques such as pleating, weaving, knitting and even patchwork, Flux’s quintessentially English designs are completely contemporary, very wearable and never less than enchanting. Her AW12 collection, Everything but the Kitchen Sink, is a playful homage to the 1950s housewife. This cute carpet jacket is inspired by Lu’s lovely bearded collie, Burt... luflux.com, Blue Gate Studio, Bayford Mews, E8 3SF

WEBSITE OF THE MONTH: WFMU Rock ‘n’ Soul Ichiban

Online radio is no longer news; what is news, however, is when an online radio station plies its trade with minimal fanfare and maximum integrity only to see its popularity explode when it gets a sudden and unexpected seal of approval from no less a celebrity than Tom Hanks. That’s what happened to WFMU Rock ‘n’ Soul Ichiban recently, when the station – which plays a brilliantly eccentric mix of vintage rock ‘n’ soul esoterica – received a letter from the Forrest Gump star simply stating that it was the best radio station in the world, and thanking it for existing. The letter went viral, we all tuned in – and discovered that Hanks was a man of supremely good taste. Listen and love. wfmuichiban.blogspot.co.uk 23

SEP_LOCAL_Q&A v4.indd 25

23/08/2012 13:25

Do you experiment with technique? Has it changed or developed over the years? A lot of the work I have exhibited is pen and ink but recently I’ve been more interested in colour, especially using watercolours. The previous five or six years I was almost exclusively drawing with a pilot g-tech gel ink pen which is extremely fine. Over the past six months I have been thinking more about colour compositions which are about as far removed from my last exhibition as you could get. I have also made an effort to create work outside of my a5 or a6 sketchbooks. These new pieces will be on display at The Strand Gallery in September.

MAP OF THE WORLD IN COLOUR, PART 1 © FARIS BADWAN

When did you first start sketching? It has been at the centre of my life from the beginning - one of my earliest memories is of waking up before everyone else and drawing at my writing desk. I used to draw large battle scenes between armies of very muscular knights and dinosaurs... I guess the main focus of my drawing has always been people. Human behaviour and communication is something that I find interesting, as well as documenting and recording events. I think ‘stream of consciousness’ is a bit of an overused term but I suppose it applies to my sketchbooks. How do you approach what it is that you want to sketch? I go through phases of fixation and get really into drawing one thing over and over, to the point where I don’t find anything else interesting until I’ve exhausted that particular subject. Often I like drawings to grow loosely from the original point of inspiration and to transform into something new. I think it’s more important for art to depict another world than to imitate reality... I like art that shows subjects in a different light, or that makes you see something you hadn’t noticed. I think a lot of paintings are inspired by the artist seeing something new for the first time, or making a new association between objects.

Are there artists you particularly admire? Egon Schiele, Klimt, Paul Klee, JW Waterhouse, Goya... Klimt is one of my favourites, he is a master of so many things and often you can see that from just one of his paintings. He combines everything I love about art mystery, colour, altered realities...

He has such perfect ideas on human form. I find his work incredibly inspiring. Paul Klee is another artist I have admired since I started studying art. He was so prolific and his work tells you everything about his life and what was going on when each piece was created. Some of his paintings are so alive and vivid even when they’re just made up of bands of colour. Twin Tents is one of my favourite paintings.

Creatures in Colour is your third solo showing. Are you excited about the exhibition? My previous exhibitions have more been about documenting my sketchbooks and allowing me to move on from them. All the work in Drawing a Straight Number 9 was blown up to ten or fifteen times the original size. I liked the idea of it being based around the accidental - the way ink lines look when you magnify them and the unintentional marks you make... things I’m not really aware of when I do a small drawing on a page in my pocket sketchbook. For Creatures in Colour I wanted to do something totally new. I began by reworking some of the enlarged sketchbook pieces, adding colour to them and transforming them into new compositions. I always felt like the sketchbooks were recording everything through a warped lens and I liked the fact that the pieces were developing further. From there I became more interested in colour and light, and exploring how to capture them. Why do you think your work is focused around voyeurism? For me the most important things stem from looking and observing rather than interacting. Watching people and interpreting their actions... overhearing parts of conversation. This is especially relevant today, everyone is being watched by everyone else all the time. The sketchbooks act as visual diaries; if you want to see my shopping list from the 13th of March it’ll probably be on one of the pages... or what was in my suitcase on a trip to Turkey.

TWO HEAD STORK © FARIS BADWAN

Do you find, working in both ‘media’ (art/illustration and music), the two complement each other? The recent paintings I’ve been doing are very separate... I don’t know, I guess it’s possible to draw parallels but not significant ones.

“I go through phases of fixation and get really into drawing one thing over and over, to the point where I don’t find anything else interesting until I’ve exhausted that particular subject” You’ve lived locally in Whitechapel for some time now, what galleries do you like to visit? There isn’t one in particular. I like the Barbican, and the Prado in Barcelona. I saw the Waterhouse exhibition at Burlington House a few years ago and it was a real turning point for me. I often found galleries quite hard work because I’d lose interest the second I stepped through the door. Like being at school and having a lesson with that teacher whose voice was always guaranteed to send you to sleep. But seeing the Waterhouse

paintings up close was incredible. It’s a style of painting I’m very envious of but I can’t imagine adopting. I think to paint like he does you have to devote your life to one technique. What’s next for you in both art and music? After the Creatures in Colour exhibition, I will be recording another Horrors album. Fresh, not frozen The Waterhouse Young Clinic’s gentle approach to wrinkle-free skin

I

,f like many people, you believe that Botox can only achieve results by freezing your natural facial expressions, it’s time to think again. Dr Mica Engel, one of Waterhouse Young’s cosmetic doctors, unravels the myths about Botox and shares her secret to a fresh, wrinkle-free appearance without frozen features. What’s Botox used for? Botox is used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, ‘bunny’ lines on the nose, smile lines and to tighten the skin around the neck and jowls. It’s also become popular for treating excessive sweating of the armpits, hands, feet and forehead, and teeth grinding (which can cause headaches and damage to teeth). Does Botox still have a stigma? People used to think that if you’d had Botox it gave you status. Now it’s an everyday treatment. The stigma surrounding it is far less than it used to be, and with a conservative approach no one need ever know you’ve had it done. How can I look fresh, not frozen? When you smile or frown the muscles in your face contract, causing lines and wrinkles. Over time these lines become permanent. Botox works by relaxing the muscle, but too much can stop all movement, which gives a frozen look. We prefer to subtly enhance your features, rather than give you a stiff, unnatural look, so we take a conservative approach. We start by injecting very small amounts into precise points in the muscle thus softening wrinkles but keeping some muscle movement.

We’ll see you two weeks later to make sure you’re happy with the results and, if needed, we’ll fine-tune them by giving you a top-up treatment. Who should carry out Botox? Botox is a prescribed medicine, so you’ll meet one of our aesthetic doctors for a full skin consultation. If you decide together that it’s the right treatment for you, they’ll prescribe it. Botox injections should only be given by a qualified doctor with relevant training – at our clinic they are always carried out by one of our aesthetic doctors. Ideally, you should choose someone registered with regulatory body, the British College of Aesthetic Medicine. All our aesthetic doctors and nurses are registered. What are the alternatives? While Botox is effective and safe, there are alternatives, such as: • Dermal fillers, which are injected into the skin to plump it up and smooth lines; • Dermaroller, a micro skin-needling treatment that triggers the body into regenerating collagen and elastin, making it perfect for treating scarring, facial and décolleté lines and overall skin rejuvenation; and • Medical Facials, which give a temporary result by plumping up the skin to soften lines, making them appear reduced. We’ll talk you through your choices at the consultation to help you find the right treatment for you. Whatever you decide, we’ll always take a gentle approach to leave you with wrinkle-free skin that makes you feel great.

WRINKLE-BUSTING OFFER Waterhouse Young Clinic is offering Absolutely readers a complimentary computerised skin consultation and 20% off your Botox or dermal filler treatment when booked on the day of consultation. To book, call 020 7486 3849 or visit waterhouseyoung.com

BOTOX MYTH BUSTERS 1. Botox freezes your facial expressions You can choose to have a more frozen look, but it’s not necessary. By injecting small, precise amounts we can soften the lines, but keep movement around the eye area, so you’ll still have your facial expressions. 2. Botox is toxic Botox is a purified form of Botulinum toxin. The concentration of the toxin is very low and when it’s injected in pinpoint amounts it won’t spread to other areas of the body, making it a safe treatment. 3. Botox is painful Most people only feel a mild, stinging sensation, however, some find the treatment uncomfortable. Mica has a lot of experience and skill with Botox injections and many clients comment on her soft touch. In addition, the Waterhouse Young clinic use a revolutionary new technique to numb the area and minimise any discomfort. The treatment is over before you know it.

In Treatment LABSPA

“The herbal compress massage originates from India and dates back thousands of years. It combines deep tissue massage, heat and a delicious blend of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, turmeric, galangal and camphor all wrapped in muslin parcels - and is designed to soothe muscle tension, reduce stress and fatigue and boost the lymphatic system. As a busy working mother, my shoulders and lower back are frequently stressed, so my therapist, Jo, had her work cut out for her kneading through all that built-up tension. The massage is a great way to relieve all manner of complaints: by way of example, headaches are largely caused by nodules in the neck and a build-up of tension around the kidneys or lower back can slow down circulation which in turn causes stiffness and fatigue. My only advice would be to have the treatment in the morning: I was so energised I found myself bursting with renewed vigour and stayed up well past bedtime!” Leah Day Herbal Compress Massage, 1 hour £65 or 90 minutes £90, labspa.co.uk, The Avenue, Muswell Hill, N10 2QJ, 020 8482 3000

Straight Talkin’ Gemma Billington road-tests US import the Inman Aligner, to achieve the perfect smile

I

distinctly remember the day I refused braces. Emotional, erratic with my exasperated mother trying to reason with me - I decided, with acute teen gaucheness that the last thing I needed was a set of train tracks. Of course, my peers all opted to endure the treatment (which resulted in perfect gnashers) while mine remained crooked. With an ingrained habit of smiling closedmouthed when I laughed, it was the one thing in my life close to a regret. Now, however (and apologies for the cliché), I finally have a smile to be proud of.

aid past brace-wearers whose teeth were starting to misalign. As the contraption only focuses on the front four teeth and constantly puts pressure on them, the teeth are continuously, yet subtly, moved into place.

THE PROCESS

The aligner looks like a retainer with a plastic bumper and spring-like contraption that sits behind the teeth, pushing them constantly into place. All aspects vary according to the client’s needs and, fortunately, my teeth only required eight weeks of

“The beauty of the Inman Aligner is that it’s removable” I initially visited the London Smile Clinic for a BriteSmile teeth whitening appointment. At my consultation, however, I was introduced to the Inman Aligner in case I should decide to go the next step further in achieving the ‘perfect smile’. The Inman Aligner is about as far removed from cumbersome train tracks as you can get. The procedure, pioneered in the States (naturally), has slowly made its way into British cosmetic dentistry and is growing in popularity. Originally the design was to

treatment, but it can take anything from six to sixteen weeks. Once fitted, the aligner felt extremely strange and I was conscious of over-salivation. My speech, much to the amusement of my colleagues, verged on comedic. Sylvester-the-cat-style spluttering remained throughout the eight weeks but the beauty of the Inman Aligner is that it’s removable. The idea is to wear it day and night, but for meetings and phone calls it’s a blessing to be able to take it out. Very soon it became a natural part of my routine.

THE RESULTS

To begin with, I took self-portraits of my teeth to assess their progress, however, the eight weeks flew by with me forgetting to update mid-duration. Even on my last appointment (I visited every fortnight for a check-up) I wasn’t quite sure how straight they were, but the difference was astounding. Months later, I still find myself running my tongue along the tooth which always used to jut out at an irritating angle, elated to find it sits perfectly in line with the rest. My smile is still very much my own; only improved. It may sound contrived, but I now grin wildly in the presence of a camera, no longer ashamed. The hang-ups I had may have mostly existed in my head, but they’ve been completely eradicated by the expert skill, care and attention of Dr Tim Bradstock-Smith and the staff at the London Smile Clinic. And for that I will be eternally grateful.

Prices start from £1,850 per arch, retainers are £200-250, londonsmile.co.uk

FOOD & TR AV EL

RESTAURANT REVIEWS THE SEAGRASS Chapel Market; a spot one doesn’t normally associate with a fine dining experience. That said, our trip to The Seagrass Restaurant, based at the 19th century Manze’s Eel and Pie shop and hidden behind a façade of closing market stalls, was a surprise indeed. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday evenings only and offers a varied three-course set menu of British fare, set off perfectly by the bygone age decor (black and white Victorian wall tiles, neat crystal pendant lighting, brown tiled flooring and wooden pew benches). Our pepper and salt pots were improvised confiture jars - we knew we were in for something different where the food had to be the main feature and we were not disappointed. The menu is succinct so choosing was stress-free, all the more so because there’s no wine list [you bring your own]. I had an appetiser of smoked mackerel pâté on black bread. Starters were pan-fried squid with a tomato salsa, rocket, pine nuts and fettuccini and smoked salmon wrapped neatly around spiced cucumber and lemon. My companion and I both chose the sea bass with accompaniments of triple-cooked chips on one and smooth herb mash on the other. We had a side of the special Seagrass slaw dominated by the sliced red onion. The desserts were smoked cheddar with oatcake biscuits and chutney and a white chocolate cake with almonds and butterscotch sauce. All the dishes would have been just as at home in a more conventionally chic establishment. We had brought a suitable bottle of Pinot Grigio but discovered on our exit that the young clientele at neighbouring tables had brought several (we’re talking four bottles for four people). Overall, this was an unexpectedly high quality culinary experience and well-worth a venture into newly-founded restaurant/market territory. For a casual evening out we recommend wholeheartedly. YORK & ALBANY Sitting on the corner of Regent’s Park in leafy and idyllic Primrose Hill, York & Albany delivers wholesome and high quality fare with friendly and down to earth service. The restaurant is one of Gordon Ramsay’s and is, like a super-stylish gastro pub, unpretentious and self-assured, blending indulgence and comfort. There are deals available weekly for weekday lunches (123pm) and early diners (6-7pm): two courses for £18 and three courses for £21. Arriving on the hottest day of the summer, the place was packed to the rafters, a courtyard patio at the back of the restaurant offered privacy and shade. We were served by an extremely jovial and charming Australian gentleman who helped guide us through the menu and the wine list. He recommended a refreshingly light chilled pea soup with radish and crème fraiche for starter, then a Loch Duart salmon with pickled celeriac and samphire for main course. Sat outside in the sunshine, pea soup and salmon washed down with a light and fruity Sancerre – what could be more perfect? The menu has a number of more complex dishes to excite the palette, but is equally

well-known for its outstanding burger and pizza options. In fact, York & Albany also offers a high class picnic selection from a deli counter which would be perfect for a romantic late summer afternoon in Regents Park. We couldn’t resist trying the fennel crème brulee with apple sorbet and the milk chocolate ganache before making our way into the very cool bar (open until midnight, live jazz on Mondays and Tuesdays). The decor is modern but subtle with a refinedlooking pewter bar. I can think of few places better to enjoy top quality food in a relaxed setting before strolling back through the park, nicely full and slightly tipsy, on a warm evening. York & Albany is a townhouse with ten rooms so if you have friends and relatives visiting London then it would be an excellent place to put them up and give them a great dinner. You could even pair this up with an evening at the park’s outstanding open air theatre. Gareth Fitzgerald gordonramsay.com/yorkandalbany, 127 – 129 Parkway, NW1 7PS

Social Reform Gemma Billington stays at the iconic Mandeville Hotel and samples the delights of their new dining venture

THE REFORM SOCIAL & GRILL There’s a quiet buzz of activity and more than a spattering of hungry guests at the opening night of the Mandeville Hotel’s latest dining venture, Reform Social & Grill - to which I’ve been lucky enough to bag an invitation. The new restaurant promises a no-fuss take on classic British fare via a concise menu of steaks, fish-of-the-day, salads and sides, and I’m intrigued to find out if its formula is a successful one. The evening is unexpectedly warm, so we make the bar our first stop: its impressive array of cocktails, spirits, wine and aperitifs proving more than welcoming. I order the aspirationally monikered ‘Millionaire’ cocktail (Johnny Walker, Grand Marnier and pomegranate syrup) while my companion chooses a refreshing elderflower Martini. The drinks are concocted with great skill and expertise by a veritable Adonis of a barman who is worth a visit alone. To complement the British cuisine, the interior is stylish yet informal with rock ‘n’ roll touches: exposed brickwork, bold artwork, Jimmie Martin cushions and coppery feature wallpaper accompanied by an indie soundtrack. Retro-frock lover Gizzie Erskine is a fellow diner and she suits the place perfectly. Though I am recommended the lobster cocktail to start (and a few rave reviews of such are overheard as the night progresses, notably from Miss Erskine) I decide to go for the mushrooms on toast whilst my companion opts for the more daring pheasant Scotch egg. Accompanying the meal is a fine house red and we are readily plied with additional wines and cocktails by the warm and attentive waiting staff. When it arrives, my starter proves to be nothing like so bland as I had begun to fear - in fact it was so hearty and

46

23/08/2012 12:57

FOOD & DR I N K

delicious that I felt compelled to ask for the recipe. The oil, herbs and intriguing addition of ale (as well as the texture of the bread and mushrooms) were finished off with the most perfect of poached eggs: a simple yet sublime dish. For mains we chose fish pie (I relished the melt-inthe-mouth scallops) and Hanger steak with snails. I’m assured that the rather adventurous steak and snails combo is an ideal fusion of flavours, not a gimmick. Special mention must be given to the delectable desserts, which, despite the fact that we were positively stuffed by this point, we absolutely had to try. I opted for a Bakewell pudding with divine vanilla custard whilst my companion devoured his Eccles cakes, served - ingeniously - with Lancashire ‘black bomb’ cheese. The Mandeville has pulled off a great feat with The Reform. Modestly priced and wholly unpretentious, they’ve also succeeded in maintaining a thoroughly British theme whilst steering well clear of Britannia kitsch. This is an establishment that will remain long after Olympic fever has (mercifully) gone. Kudos.

THE HOTEL There’s a problem on the Central line, of course, so by the time I’ve waded through the shoppers, tourists and dawdlers of Oxford Circus on a Saturday afternoon, my partner and I are absolutely shattered. It’s a great reprieve then, to step into the cool foyer of the Mandeville Hotel, located on the eponymous street - tucked away from frenetic Oxford Street and a stone’s throw from Bond Street Station. It’s grand but not on an ostentatious scale, and the addition of the newly opened Reform Social & Grill gives it extra ‘cool’ points. We are booked into a superior double room which has

all the expected amenities: ample space, a sumptuouslooking bed, twin fluffy white bathrobes and a healthy stash of luxurious Etro products in the sleek bathroom. The character of the Mandeville lies in its interior design, however, which is modern and boutique, with playfully patriotic accents such as Queen’s Guards wallpaper in the elevator and a regal purple colour scheme. The room also has jaunty Tolouse Lautrec-style paintings on the walls - so much more appealing than languid flowers and landscapes. The room is a relaxing haven in one of the busiest spots in London, and there’s time to kill before my partner and I are due at a party in the evening. Once we’re dressed we head to the Reform bar for pre-soirée cocktails. The staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive, the doorman even remarking that I look like ‘a princess for the night’ - which, alongside an expert Martini, puts a real spring in my step. The Mandeville is a dynamic and contemporary hotel that holds its own among formidable competition in an iconic, unbeatable location... and it has the best-stocked bar in Marylebone.

RECIPE

Strawberry Daiquiri Mini Cupcakes

An adult treat from the Hummingbird Bakery For the sponge • 100ml (3 ½ fl oz) white rum • 170g (6oz) caster sugar • 150g (5 ½ oz) strawberries • 40g (1 ½ oz) unsalted butter, softened • 120g (4oz) plain flour • 1 ½ tsp baking powder • ¼ tsp salt • 1 large egg • 120ml (4fl oz) whole milk • ½ tsp vanilla essence For the frosting • 80g (3oz) unsalted butter, softened • 250g (9oz) icing sugar • ½ tsp finely grated lime zest • 4tsp whole milk • Sliced strawberries, sprinkles to decorate • Preheat the oven to 170°C (325°F) and fill a muffin tin with mini muffin cases. • Add the rum and 30g of sugar to a saucepan and bring to the boil, allowing it to reduce by about half, then set aside to cool. Chop the strawberries into small pieces, then soak in the rum and sugar reduction for 30-40 minutes. • Using a freestanding electric mixer with paddle attachment or a hand-held electric whisk, slowly mix together the butter, flour, remaining sugar, baking powder and salt. • In a jug, whisk the egg, milk and vanilla essence. With the mixer/whisk still running, gradually pour the liquid mixture into the flour and butter and mix thoroughly. • Drain the strawberries, reserving the liquid, and place a few small pieces in each cupcake case. Spoon the cake batter on top, filling each case by two-thirds. • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the cupcakes are golden-brown. While they are still warm, spoon about ½ teaspoon of the rum reduction over each, then leave to cool before frosting. • Beat together the butter, icing sugar and lime zest, then mix together the milk and 4 teaspoons of the reserved rum. Pour into the butter and icing sugar mixture, then beat the frosting until soft and fluffy. Smooth the frosting on to the cupcakes using a palette knife.

Now it’s a regenerative ‘urban art space’ housing Shrimpy’s, a ‘Calexican’ restaurant (how very 2012) from the restaurateurs behind Bistroteque in Bethnal Green. Wedged alongside the canal and tucked away behind corrugated fibreglass screens (looking for all the world like something from a William Eggleston Polaroid), the decor owes something to its sister establishment and something to the idea of an American diner in the middle of nowhere. Dishes are a tad expensive but we love the random pineapple motifs scattered throughout.

TR AV EL THE HOTEL: Found off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly may be a train, coach, plane, mini-bus and boat ride away but the level of peace and quiet this gorgeous archipelago exudes is more than worth the journey there. The hotel of Hell Bay on Bryher, the smallest of the islands, is so-called because of the crashing waves that sweep in from the Atlantic – waves that have sunk no less than 530 ships throughout the years. Hell Bay, which hides in its own cove, is all cream-and-blue interiors and whitepainted windows that open out on to blinding blue sea. Other than the hotel, there isn’t much else on this particular island to see and visit – a shop, a café and a smattering of New England-style houses – but its allure lies in long walks across craggy rocks and grassy knolls, paddling in the shallow waters and making small talk with the occasional dog-walking locals. Going to Hell and back has never been this enjoyable.

UK GETAWAY

Hell Bay,

Scilly Isles THE SPA:

THE BEDROOMS: Small but perfectly formed, Hell Bay has 25 suites for bedding down in: our Studio Suite was ridiculously spacious with double doors and a small balcony overlooking the Atlantic – a view to rouse even the sleepiest guest from slumber. Beach house chic runs throughout, with wood and wicker in blues and beige, scenes of Scilly hanging on walls, Malabar fabrics and Lloyd Loom furniture. In addition to the bottle of champagne on-ice that awaited us on arrival, there was also a cupboard-concealed mini-bar and coffee station for fuel not of the bubbly variety. Satellite and DVD players come as standard.

GET THERE: A regular service runs between London Waterloo and Bristol Parkway, after which, one must catch a flight from Bristol Airport into St. Mary’s. From there, hop aboard a ferry to Bryher via Tresco.

PRICE TAG: Suites at Hell Bay start from £135 per adult per night on a half-board basis, including boat transfers to/from the hotel. To book (and for travel options) contact 01720 422947 or hellbay.co.uk

There’s no on-site spa, per se, but there is a separate building that houses all you need to rest and recharge. Burn off one too many seafood suppers in the small gym, work up a sweat in the sauna or take a drip in the whirlpool. There’s also a heated outdoor pool with sun loungers and if you’re more about clothes-on than clothes-off, a living room with pool table, board games, TV and Guitar Hero is sure to stave off boredom. Kids will be in their element.

THE RESTAURANT: Heading up the Hell Bay kitchen is Richard Kearsley, who uses fresh, seasonal ingredients: expect beef from Tresco and crab from Bryher, and dishes such as Cornish mackerel and fillet of hake. Breakfast is just as delicious — from the full English to salmon so fresh you half expect it to wrangle free from the hollandaise. There are even chickens on-site, just in case you feel like getting your own eggs in the morning. For a change of scenery, those staying longer than a couple of nights should hop on the ferry to Tresco and lunch at Ruin Beach Café at Sea Garden Cottages.

Glamping TRAVEL ROUND UP

Ditch the hotels for back to basics comfort…

SUNNY BROW FARM CUMBRIA

Stay in a woodland yurt at Sunny Brow Farm, and you’re likely to never want to camp in a conventional tent again. Set in rural Cumbria, between the quaint town of Ambleside and the sleepy village of Hawkshead, the owners Suzy and Philip are guaranteed to make your stay as much about the surrounding nature and wildlife, as it is about sleeping in the wild under the stars. Fields roll around the two unique yurts up for grabs: they sleep two to four people and their open-plan construction means the small kitchen, stove, traditional log burner, king size and two single beds come together to create a comfortable living space. Outside, there’s a dining table, fire circle and small gas BBQ, while the

shower room and bathroom are only 100m walk away. There are plenty of activities in which to get involved including mountain biking in Grizedale Forest, rock climbing in Kendal, the Tarn Hows walk, woodpecker, badger and deer watching from the farm itself, fishing in the tarn and finally, cookery courses, which run according to what’s in season. In fact, Sunny Brow Farm is so well organised, they have a contingency plan in the form of Langdale Hotel and Country Club (which offers swimming pools and restaurants) in case the weather is rotten. But chances are, you won’t stay away for long. A weekend or mid-break prices range between £225 and £285; a week’s stay is between £350 and £425. sunnybrowfarm.co.uk, 01539436288

‘Where camping meets boutique hotel’, opines the Molly Dishwasher website – and the description couldn’t be more accurate. A stay at this wonderfully quaint little home on wheels means not only losing yourself amid the natural, peaceful surroundings of the East Sussex woodland, but also in the pretty upholstery and furnishings that make the interior of this luxurious cabin, which sleeps two adults and two children, so welcoming. Puddle splashing is encouraged (wellies come with), as do logs for the essential wood burner, linen, towels, coal for the BBQ (perfect for those longer summer evenings), a travel cot (if needed), children’s activity packs,

THE YURT AT MIDLAND FARM HEREFORDSHIRE

For most people, camping involves a general understanding that luxury is sacrificed for a more back to basics few days. But there’s no such need for compromise here in Herefordshire, where Sarah and Charlie Smith, who own the beautiful Midland Farm, have seen to it that your stay in their grounds will be just as, if not more, comfortable than your own home. Situated amid 1.25 acres of their perfectlymanicured gardens (which have featured on the cover of the Royal Horticultural Society magazine), sits an exceedingly comfortable ‘glamping’ yurt. It comes with its own Shepherd’s Hut adjacent, which means guests, who never have to share their

plot of land with anyone else, enjoy a fully equipped kitchen, fridge, cooker and full bathroom. The Yurt is authentic, Mongolian and felt-lined: it sleeps two people in two singles and two adults in an opulent antique French bed. There’s bed linen aplenty, a wood burning stove and a BBQ area, a plant nursery, nearby horses, free-range chickens and abundant peace. Nearby, you’re spoilt for choice; enjoy The Griffin at Felin Fach for sensational Welsh grub, and while there, hop into the ‘Town of Books’, Hay-on-Wye, home to the annual literary festival. Or, stay at the yurt and book yourself in for some horse-riding. It’s the perfect place to learn.

The price is £100 per night for the yurt and Shepherd’s hut combined. midlandfarm.co.uk, 01544 318575

Angela Sacre finds that there is no place like an all-inclusive spa resort in Mexico to get rid of all those stresses and strains

W

ho wouldn’t jump at the chance of an escape to the five star resort of Le Blanc Hotel and Spa in popular Mexican resort, Cancun? Well, normally, I wouldn’t. I never stay at all-inclusive resorts. It’s the fear of feeling incarcerated in the confines of a sinister complex, like something out of The Prisoner, forbidden to visit any local sights or experience anything of the world around me. And in Cancun, my fears turned out to be quite founded. Though I can’t blame the hotel (and certainly no large balloon). Nothing was preventing me from venturing further – nothing other than my own growing sense of deep relaxation and contentment. I hadn’t figured on that. But when you consider that Le Blanc ranked at number three in a recent poll of the world’s top ten all-inclusive resorts, perhaps

I shouldn’t have been so surprised. This is what it’s all about. For a start, comfort is paramount here. Every night, the Le Blanc Spa Resort team surprises us with a turndown service, where our own personal butler, Alex, there to indulge our every whim, runs us a Jacuzzi bath and offers a pillow menu that spans orthopaedic, goose-feathered and extravagant lavender or chamomile pillows. During our time here, I sleep much more deeply than I normally do. With a Caribbean breeze floating in from the balcony and petit fours at bedtime, the sense of serenity is truly overwhelming. The resort’s list of activities includes ‘relax in plush lounge chairs on the private white sand beach’ or ‘sip on cocktails served by the pool concierge’ – which is about as much activity as you need here – though you could go scuba diving or indulge in a bit of

Le Blanc ranked at number three in a recent poll of the world’s top ten all-inclusive resorts poolside volleyball, with the right motivation. Days pass in a blissed-out haze of relaxation and comfort. The Le Blanc Spa features a unique blend of Asian and European tradition providing guests with all-inclusive activities ranging from sun-bathing beside three luxurious pools, (including two infinity pools with swim-up bars), a fully-equipped fitness centre and a health spa. My therapist Angelica gives me the most thorough and de-stressing massages I’ve ever experienced, using lavender and camomile to calm my mind and body.

There are eight on-site restaurants offering an impressive global selection and with a staff-to-guest ratio of almost one-to-one, this adults-only resort is the epitome of luxury. Despite signing up to an ‘all-in’ package, we did manage to escape for a trip to the Mayan temples of Chichen Itza, but in the event, we couldn’t wait to get back to the hotel Jacuzzi. I am a convert, it seems, not a prisoner and ‘just chilling’ won out in the end.

I N TER IORS Welcome to Hix-ville

It might put you off your steak, but the artistic focal point of Mark Hix’s latest venture is certainly a talking point. The grade II listed Shoreditch Tramshed building was originally built to house an electricity generator for the Tramway System. The space has been transformed into a refectory style area, with Damien Hirst’s formaldehyde ‘sculpture’ representing the menu’s primary ingredients; chicken and beef. chickenandsteak.co.uk, 32 Rivington Street, EC2A 3LX

Movie Magic Eames: The Architect and the Painter is a new feature film exploring the fascinating lives of husband-and-wife team Charles and Ray Eames. Comprised of archive footage and interviews with friends and colleagues, the film is narrated by James Franco and investigates the history of the influential duo and their place in American industrial design.

It’s London Design Festival this month and SCP East are hosting the Design Department Store for the second year running. The store is a cross between a working department store and a design exhibition, with all items on display - furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories - available to purchase. 14 - 23 September, scp.co.uk, 135 Curtain Road, EC2A 3BX

Famed for industrial lighting and furniture, the new pendant shades are characterised by a distinctive oil-slick sheen. Dream Bedrooms Creating a multi-purpose room is key to designing a child’s bedroom, says interior designer Niloufar Lamakan of Nila Design

W

hile most rooms in a house have a main purpose - eating in the dining room, cooking in the kitchen and so on - a child’s bedroom is not just about sleeping but has to suit myriad purposes like play, drawing and entertaining friends, as well as studying and providing a calm atmosphere. All this AND it has to be stylish!

PLANNING When planning a room for a child, I start off by talking to the parents about how they expect to use the room and what their daily routine is like. Then I divide the room into zones where each activity can take place, keeping as much floor space free as possible. Unless the child is lucky enough to have a separate playroom or den, I suggest giving them the largest room. This

means their toys and later their music and teenage paraphernalia will stay in their room rather than take over the house.

grows. Multifunctional furniture such as an armchair that can turn into a bed for sleepovers is a good use of space.

DESIGN

It may be fun to channel your inner child to help with decorating your child’s room, but the adult in you has to be firmly in charge or you may be redecorating more often than you planned.

I like to design a sophisticated room that can be made fun with accessories and toys, so you can keep the wall colours neutral or muted to avoid redecorating too often. Although the mood of a child’s room will always be different from the rest of the house, the decor should not clash. Lighting is a good way to change the mood of a room, and dimmers are useful for bedtime routines.

FURNITURE Choose furniture that is flexible and maximises use of space, such as cabin beds with storage or desk space underneath. A white or wood finish bed can last a long time if the bedding is changed as the child

5 Top Tips FOR DESIGNING KIDS’ ROOMS MULTI PURPOSE Consider all the activities likely to take place in the room and allow for all of them

THINK AHEAD Good design should last at least three years, so buy flexible furniture that can be reconfigured or painted

PLENTY OF STORAGE One thing that doesn’t change with age is the need for storage, so have plenty of different types

ACCESSORISE Use inexpensive accessories that can be changed easily when the child grows tired of the latest fad. Don’t buy an expensive Cinderella bed!

ASK THEM WHAT THEY WANT Depending on their age, take their ideas into account. A baby won’t notice the throw is by Dior but a tweenie will be more fashion conscious

PROPERT Y

IN THEIR OWN WORDS Nik Stylianou, Sales Director at Chesterton Humberts, Islington PHOTO BY RICHARD CLARK

W

ith all the pre-Olympic apprehension and the post-Olympic euphoria, the property market in London has almost been paused over the past few weeks. So what does this mean for the rest of 2012 now that the games are over? Should property owners in Islington continue doing the ‘Mobot’ in celebration of the sustained strength of the local market, or is it about to fall flatter than a Philips Idowu triple jump attempt? Islington was one of the strongest London boroughs in terms of performance in 2011 and this doesn’t seem to have dampened so far in 2012, with house prices increasing by up to 15% in some instances, but the real question is whether this frenetic activity can be sustained. Certainly with landmark events this year such as the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics (and not to mention the awful weather) we have certainly noted a drop in transaction numbers. However a continued demand for quality stock has meant that despite this, prices do continue to hold strongly. So why is Islington likely to keep running? Quite simply, because it still offers considerable value for money as

well as superb equity gains. Areas such as Barnsbury and Cannonbury with their graceful Georgian and Victorian architecture remain popular with affluent professionals and families. The popular amenities and lifestyle offerings of Upper Street, which connects Highbury and Holloway to Angel, are easily reachable from most parts within the borough. However, the primary reason is that Islington is still considered cheap compared to other highbrow locations such as Marylebone, Hampstead, St John’s Wood and Kensington, meaning that Islington benefits from a huge migration of buyers from these areas. I would therefore suggest that any vendor with a property to sell should focus on making sure that their chosen agent is able to devise a strategy that is still able to extract maximum value across a wider London market, not just a local one. There are still plenty of runners and riders left in Islington in 2012 and I expect activity to continue at a very good pace. Chesterton Humberts, Islington www.chestertonhumberts.com 020 7359 9777

from Colman Coyle, gives his expert advice on all your legal property questions I have had problems removing squatters from my empty property but is it true that from 1st September I will legally be able to evict them? Section 144 of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 which comes into force on 1st September 2012 creates a new offence of squatting in a residential building. However, the offence will not be committed by anyone holding over after the end of a tenancy and does not apply to commercial properties. The introduction of this section follows a number of recent reports in the media of squatters occupying residential properties. The Government responded last year by consulting on the possibility of making squatting a criminal offence. The idea behind this legislation is to avoid the property owner having to seek a court order to obtain possession of their own Property as this can be time consuming and expensive. From the 1st September 2012 squatting can be dealt with by the police provided the provisions of the Act have been met. The new offence will be committed where a person does all of the following: i. Is in a residential building as a trespasser, having entered it as a trespasser. ii. Knows or ought to know that he or she is a trespasser. iii. Is living in the building or intends to live there for any period. The possible sanctions include a fine of up to ÂŁ5,000.00 and/or imprisonment. However, property owners will be reliant on the police enforcing this law in a timely fashion, and it remains to be seen what priority will be given by the police to this crime.

Cutting edge

design Cutting edge design and technology comes as standard at Hampstead’s newest gated development, Telegraph Hill, NW3

B

Behind the original 1930’s facades of the four substantial houses at Telegraph Hill, Hampstead’s first gated development for many years, lies a level of contemporary living to please the most discerning buyer. The reconfiguration and total reconstruction of these now six and seven-bedroom family houses is an impressive accomplishment for developer E+O, who has focused on the highest quality workmanship, materials and finishes, and cutting edge technology, throughout. Each house boasts certain features as standard - Lutron Homeworks Lighting Control Systems, multi room audio systems and in-house key functions with iPod/iPad/iPhone control facility, heating and ventilation controlled by a central building management system, Comfort Cooling and under floor heating, individual

house alarm systems with CCTV security and videophone entry, and wiring for broadband, cable or satellite connections. No holes have been barred on design either - each house has its own especially designed sweeping staircase, featuring bespoke chandeliers and luxuries such as ‘Havana’ leather covered handrails. And what about amenities? The £20,000 Gaggenau fridge freezer says it all. With House 4 already sold, House 3 is the

showpiece, with its extensive lower ground floor leisure area of 2500sq ft, including dedicated cinema room, gym/games area, indoor heated pool, changing room, steam room and access to a patio area ideal for entertaining. Prices are from £7.25million to £14million. Call Aston Chase on 020 7724 4724 or TK International on 020 7794 8700; visit telegraph-hill.co.uk
