EDITOR’S LETTER

P I L AT E S HQ

Hello June Bugs!

S

o what’s on the menu this month? We are stoked to be sharing our very special N1 Centre fashion shoot (p28) with you. Housing key brands such as French Connection, Monsoon and Gap, the N1 Centre is the number one local shopping destination for stocking up on all the best summer trends - from pleats to maxi-dresses to lace and sun-dresses. Whatever your style, the N1 Centre has it covered, and we thoroughly recommend getting down there to knock your all-important summer wardrobe into shape as soon as you can! As you know, we like to keep our finger on the proverbial pulse where food is concerned, and it’s this taste for great nosh that led us to Manna in Primrose Hill (p38). The restaurant has been on our hit-list for some time: a fine dining vegetarian restaurant (yes, they do exist!), not only is Manna’s food out-of-thisworld, super fresh and reassuringly healthy, but the restaurant itself is a long-standing favourite with the residents of the Hill and pretty much a local landmark. It figures that we’ve wanted to go there since... forever! We’ve also reviewed Public House (p45) - a boutique restaurant just off of Upper Street, which is great for both drinking and dining. Our lead interview found me chatting to Rickie and Melvin (p13), the cheeky chappies who present lots of the nation’s favourite music TV programmes as well as London-based radio station Kiss 100’s prestigious breakfast show. And our culture feature found me equally excited to speak to superstar DJ Kissy Sell Out (p59). We spoke about his new album Wild Romance - out this month - and he spilled the beans on the highs and lows of the DJ game. As the months heat up, I look forward to reporting back on not only the best outdoor activities in the local area and the best places to eat and drink al fresco, but the best in summer fashion and beauty too. While I hunt them out, enjoy the sunshine!

DISCUSSION LONDON IN PERIL: CALLING TIME ON THE GRAND PROJECTS 30TH JUNE, 7:30PM

EDITOR’S PICK

Journeying across London reveals numerous ill-advised, half-completed, or abandoned structures; grand projects which failed to fulfill the anticipation of their inception. The Millennium Dome, Thames Gateway and potentially the grandest of Grand Projects, the 2012 London Olympics, arguably reflect landscapes of vast and generally disregarded monuments whose legacies to the city that hosts them had been full of promise. Through renowned photographic series such as the A1, Troubled Land, New Europe or American Night British artist Paul Graham presents vivid portrayals of people and places. This comprehensive survey of over 25 years of work demonstrates his innovative approach to documentary, reinventing traditional genres of photography to create a unique visual language. In the early 1980s Graham transposed the American genre of the road trip, exemplified by artists such as William Eggleston, to the less glamorous terrain of Britain’s A1 revealing its unexpectedly cinematic potential. He has gone on to use journeys – across Europe, Japan and America – to immerse himself in the landscapes and unconscious rituals of societies. Arrestingly beautiful, Graham’s photographs transform the banality of a social security office or a suburban lawn into compelling scenes. Yet for all the immediacy of his saturated colours and large formats, these pictures are also about what cannot be seen. ‘I realised that concealment… has run through… my work, from the landscape of Northern Ireland, and the unemployed tucked away in backstreet offices, to the burdens of history swept under the carpet in Europe or Japan. Concealment of our turmoil from others, from ourselves even’. This definitive show includes over 100 photographs as well as Graham’s book works and is accompanied by a comprehensive monograph. LOCAL FOCUS STUDENTS SUCCEED IN APPRENTICE-STYLE COMPETITION

LOCAL

NEWS

Pupils from Islington Arts & Media School and Central Foundation Boys School took part in Islington Schools Enterprise Challenge, a competition run by the council. With help and advice they set up businesses ranging from a healthy food stall trading at Whitecross Street market, to a school tuck shop, for four weeks. There were four winners in the challenge, the ‘Most Profitable Business Idea’ went to Big Man Snacks from Islington Arts & Media who ran their schools’ tuck shop. Best Marketing went to Perfect Jackets of Central Foundation Boys School. The team sold jacket potatoes and cakes at Whitecross Street Market. They undertook comprehensive market research, created a brand and a logo. Cllr Paul Convery, Islington Council’s executive member for planning and regeneration, said: “We’re committed to giving young people the skills they need to get jobs in today’s tough times. “These students really rose to this challenge, which gave them a valuable chance to run their own real business’. The council-run challenge was designed to support the schools’ work-related learning curriculum.

A round-up of what Islington Council is doing for the borough… PLEA FROM COUNCIL TO SAVE ARCHWAY JOBS Islington Council is urging the Government to rethink the scheme to relocate the Office of the Public Guardian from Archway Tower to Birmingham - a move that would take more than 170 jobs away from the borough. The loss of so many skilled and experienced staff will not only impact Islington’s economy but it will also affect those who use their services. Hak Huseyin, Chairman of the Archway Town Centre Management Group, said: “I’m hearing every day from local businesses worried about the impact of the OPG leaving Archway. “Restaurants and cafes who rely on lunchtime trade for a large share of their turnover are particularly concerned. It’s vital that we retain office-based staff who contribute such a lot to the local economy.”

COUNCIL CLAMPS DOWN ON ILLEGAL ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO SALES

Islington Council has written to to 320 off-licensed shops in the borough to warn them that their license may be revoked if they sell smuggled or counterfeit tobacco and alcohol. The action followed after Islington Council’s trading standards team and Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs found large amounts of illegal alcohol and tobacco in 40 premises - all of which was seized. The haul included over 5,000 bottles of wine, 800 litres of spirits, over 3,500 cigarettes 23kg of other tobacco products, all of which had been smuggled into the UK - excess duty came to £19,000. Bob Gaiger, HMRC spokesman said: “We work with the council’s trading standards officers to combat the sale of illicit alcohol and tobacco in Islington. Tax evasion from the black market sale of smuggled alcohol and tobacco goods

is depriving the public purse of around £3 billion a year in lost revenue, which, if collected could be used to fund public services such as hospitals and schools.” Police Sergeant Robin Clark, Islington Police Licensing team, said: “Consumers are often unable to tell whether a product is genuine or not and these goods can be really damaging to a person’s health, so it is vital that shop keepers only buy from recognised wholesalers.”

The North London Rickie and end up moving in interviewing Will Smith residents, best known for a different direction entirely. presenting the Kiss 100 Breakfast Show every weekday “Melvin’s one of the funniest people you’ll ever morning (they won Silver at The Sony Radio Awards meet,” Rickie says when we meet in the Clerkenwell back in 2009 in the most prestigious category, Best office of their publicist. “I told him he needed to do my Breakfast Show), have also presented together on MTV course instead – he’s a million times more animated Digs for MTV One as well as on MTV Music Junkie – than me – perfectly suited to the more theatrical and provided backstage coverage for award ceremonies elements of the syllabus.” Melvin agrees, “Before I ranging from the BRITs to the BAFTAs. switched I just used to take notes, then fall asleep. I What makes their story so remarkable is that they’ve can’t remember a single thing from that course!” achieved everything together. Close friends who met at It seems natural, then, that such a supportive Luton University, where both were studying radio and friendship would blossom into a business partnership. media, almost every step the pair has taken since has “When we work together, it doesn’t feel like work,” been as a twosome – though even they hadn’t envisioned says Melvin, “but as soon as we’re alone, it does!” their post-uni path being quite so paved with gold. Those of us who simply enjoy it rather than creating Rickie started out with a focus on becoming a broadcast it can tend to forget just how fragmented the media journalist, but in the end his attentions turned to radio – has become. INTERVIEW

increasing number of channels, while the internet, blogging and user-generated content mean that public profile, presence and a ‘voice’ can now belong to anyone with an idea or the simple determination to snag some attention. It’s easier than ever to become a media ‘sensation’ in doublequick time – though by the same logic, the competition has increased too. All of which means that, though ‘presenting’ might seem like a perfectly viable career option to young people nowadays, it wasn’t always so. When I was growing up in the ‘80s and ‘90s, TV and radio stars seemed just as rarefied as actors and pop singers. Rickie and Melvin were kids at the same time – so did ‘being on the telly’ ever seem like a realistic option to them? Interestingly, their responses are different. While Melvin feels that, “People like Trevor Nelson and Richard Blackwood paved the way… I thought, ‘I could do that’”, Rickie confides that he didn’t. “Even though we were studying media, everyone on that course wanted to break into broadcasting.” By way of further explanation, Melvin adds, “I was a strange little guy, I was more confident as a child, so I got it into my head that presenting was all I wanted to do.” In the end, Melvin got what he wanted – and it was a comedy show-reel that helped the boys get a foot in the door. They were signed to Somethin’ Else Talent and production agency and things took off from there. Since then they seem to have done it all – and won many thousands of fans in the process. Even when introducing acts at huge festivals and live gigs, like Hyde Park’s annual Wireless event, it’s evident that each of them truly enjoys and embraces their work – and to be fair, who wouldn’t love getting paid to kick around with their best mate everyday? As they reminisce about their early work experiences at the Carphone Warehouse and the Tax Office, you can’t fail to understand why they relish the opportunity

to bring their collective influences to the fore, putting their natural energy and infectious enthusiasm to good use rather than letting it ebb away sat behind a desk in an office. Quite simply, they seem born to present. And when you see or hear them in action – particularly on radio, in fact – their cleverness becomes clear. Drawing on a huge reserve of cultural, social and musical reference points, they dole out soundbite after soundbite of good-natured, entertaining and engaging fun. And whereas radio is less structured and relies more on spontaneous audience interaction and humour, TV allows them to express their more ‘animated’ 3D selves. “I like doing both,” says Rickie, “because we’re doing mostly music TV and we’re part of that music machine – it’s nice to see the same faces during the promotional cycle.” With Melvin hailing from Enfield and Rickie residing just over the way in King’s Cross, I also want to know about their top tips for places to go in north London. Their answers don’t take long in coming: Kim’s Vietnamese Food Hut is highly recommended, as is Shaka Zulu and the Avalon Lounge Club in Shoreditch. They like One Marylebone as an events space and tell me to check it out: duly noted. After swapping music tips and music video favourites, I ask them who is the most interesting person they’ve ever interviewed. A unanimous answer: Will Smith. “He’s just so nice,” explains Melvin. “He knows how to play the game, he’s ultra-professional. But if he’s pretending, we’ve fallen for it – he puts you at ease and seems genuinely interested just to talk to people.” A remark that leaves me wondering – because whether they know it or not, the same could be said for Rickie and Melvin. 

“WHEN WE WORK TOGETHER, IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE WORK,” SAYS MELVIN, “BUT AS SOON AS WE’RE ALONE, IT DOES!”

CENTRE STAGE Eloise Baumann explores the history of the City of London’s famous Barbican Centre – one of the twentieth century’s most controversial design icons

I

n many ways, architecture is, to its practitioners, the most forbidding of all the arts. Unlike a writer, painter or musician, the architect’s task is not to create something that pleases him or herself before all others – for most architectural projects, there is a client to satisfy (and often a client splashing staggering amounts of cash). Furthermore, the architect – unlike the novelist or the sculptor – cannot choose her own standards and criteria by which to work and develop her art: in architecture, practical considerations nearly always rank alongside or outstrip intellectual and aesthetic ones in importance, and any project which ends up unfit for purpose is likely doomed to disgrace and recriminations – often on a very public scale. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the bridge or how modern the museum: if it sways, sinks, leaks, leans or just confuses the people who have to use it, it’s likely to come under fire. And understandably so, because architecture is all around us: a dominant thread in the fabric of our lives. It can shape the physical and emotional course of our everyday experiences without us even realising it – and it’s big business to boot. London is home to some of the world’s most acclaimed, expensive and controversial architectural practices,

and also to many of its most renowned and reviled buildings. And if you ask any Londoner to name one such building, loved or loathed, one name is likely to come up time and again (and in either category): the Barbican Centre. The Barbican Centre (or simply ‘The Barbican’, as it’s known to most of us) is the largest performing arts centre in Europe. Home to one of the capital’s most active and diverse arts programmes, the centre hosts everything from theatre, dance and exhibitions to classical recitals, pop concerts and film screenings. Built and owned by the City of London Corporation, the original post-war construction project cost £156 million. The centre was sited in the middle of the Barbican Estate, itself a new addition to the Square Mile having been completed only six years earlier, in 1976. The City of London had sustained massive damage during the German bombing raids of the Second World War and Cripplegate – one of its four residential wards – had been particularly badly hit. As of 1951, only 58 people lived in Cripplegate (compared to over 14,000 a hundred years earlier), despite its proximity to many of the country’s most important commercial and financial institutions. As a result, a decision was

made to repopulate the area by building a new and modernistic residential estate that could house thousands. Architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, fresh from their work on the nearby Golden Lane estate, were commissioned to turn the dream into a reality. The name Cripplegate faded into memory, and the Barbican Estate – named from the Latin word barbecana, meaning a fortified outpost or gate – was born. The Barbican Estate would in time become an architectural icon, but not everyone would appreciate its alleged charms. Built in the Brutalist style that now seems to so many like the 20th century’s greatest aesthetic error – all raw concrete and unforgiving angles – the estate soon gained a reputation for impenetrability. Its residents had sufficient opportunity to learn how to navigate the 35 acre site’s three massive towers and thirteen terraced blocks, all of them linked by connecting squares, terraces and podium walkways raised above street level. But to the outsider making a one-off visit, the estate could prove devilishly perplexing to get around. For the Barbican Centre, which had its origins in the same 1952 planning meetings as the estate which shared its name, this problem was rather more acute. The centre was intended as the

SPOTLIGHT Corporation of London’s ‘gift to the nation’ but, to make the most of that gift, the nation had to be able to find it – and find their way out again. The Barbican Centre opened its doors in 1982, thirteen years after the first residents had moved in to the surrounding estate. Constructed in the form of a ziggurat – a tiered building comprised of a succession of receding levels, something like an Aztec pyramid – the project’s key architect, John Honer, was certainly not lacking in ambition. Today – after a few structural updates and rearrangements – the massive structure houses the Barbican Hall, a spectacular concert hall that can seat 1,949 people; the Barbican Theatre, with a capacity of 1,166; a second, 200-seat theatre venue, The Pit; two art galleries; three cinema screens with a combined capacity of nearly 700; one of London’s largest free public libraries; three restaurants; seven conference halls; two trade exhibition halls, and a variety of informal performance spaces. At the time of its opening, there was no doubting the likelihood that the centre would add hugely to the cultural life of London and the nation as a whole. But nonetheless, the sheer scale of the project and its architects’ commitment to stylistic cohesion meant that, to the average visitor, it proved as puzzling to negotiate as the Barbican Estate outside. Lines painted on the ground were intended to lead the unfamiliar through the estate and into the centre, but once inside there was the same bewildering – if visually arresting – multiplicity of levels, walkways and ways to get, well, lost.

Over the decades since its completion, the Barbican Centre and the Barbican Estate have been the subject of several attempts to render them more ‘user-friendly’ and easily navigable. In the mid-1990s Theo Crosby of the Pentagram Design Studio, an international firm specialising in graphic design, architecture, interiors and brand identity, was commissioned to add various decorative features to the exterior of the centre, to lighten the impact of its bleak concrete facades. Yet still the Barbican was voted London’s ugliest building in a 2003 poll. In 2005 another, more far-reaching refurbishment programme saw architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris improve the area’s signage, improve pedestrian access and create new links between previously separated terraces and foyers. In addition, the mid1990s embellishments of Pentagram were largely removed in order to restore a sense of aesthetic cohesion – a notable tip of the hat to the Brutalist vision of Honer decades before. Meanwhile inside the centre itself, the main hall had been subject to its own criticisms and consequent renovations, culminating in a £7.5 million project to improve acoustics, overseen by expert US acoustician Larry Kirkegaard. Critics were divided as to whether the work completely succeeded in dealing with the perceived ‘dryness’ of the Barbican Hall’s acoustics – and yet the centre today seems more popular and more contemporary than ever. The London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra both call the Barbican Hall their home, while the Royal Shakespeare Company’s leaving

the centre in 2002 didn’t seem to harm its theatrical aspirations, with its focus now devoted to the showcasing of a diverse range of acclaimed visiting productions. In terms of its design, the Barbican Centre remains a lightning rod for critical debate. But while its impracticalities and seemingly unfriendly aspect are almost legendary, its scale, scope and undeniable excellence as a haven for the arts ensure it remains much loved by many. The last government agreed, and in September 2001 arts minister Tessa Jowell recognised the iconic status of the entire Barbican complex when she announced that it was to be made a Grade II-listed structure. So what’s the truth of it? Well, like nearly all the best – or most interesting – architecture and design, the smart advice is to make use of it then decide for yourself. If you’ve not visited before, this month is the perfect time to go – with upcoming events including an exhibition on the history of British jazz, a screening of tongue in cheek Australian teen horror flick The Loved Ones (as part of the Barbican Lates series) and acclaimed stage director Deborah Warner’s take on Richard Sheridans classic comedy The School for Scandal, which runs until June 18. If, on the other hand, you’ve visited before, chances are you’ve already made your mind up – but it’s a safe bet you’ve got an opinion. And when all’s said and done, perhaps the best measure of the success of any arts venue’s design is whether it gets people talking? ■ barbican.org.uk 17

Tried & Tested

NAILING IT Gemma Billington gets treated to a Nailgirls Signature Pedicure and Hot Stone Therapy at their Islington salon

O

f all the treatments available to be tried and tested, I’ll be the first to admit that I hit the jackpot with my appointment at Nailgirls. I signed up for a Signature Pedicure - shape, buff, scrub, hot towel and colour - with an additional luxury Hot Stone Aroma Therapeutic Massage. I was certainly looking forward to it. Nailgirls is tucked away just off Upper Street; a chic little salon in pink, red and white. The interior comprises a combination of girlie accents – mini crystal chandeliers, a baroque mirror and Dali (or Lulu Guinness handbag)inspired lips sofa. Lynda, the owner, is warm, friendly and extremely efficient; fl itting around the salon making sure that everything is running smoothly and greeting every one of the endless stream of customers. She is clearly proud of her business and passionate about her products. The range of colours that line the wall - from deep scarlet and purples to fire engine red, neutrals, golds, silvers and canary yellow - leave me feeling like a kid in a candy store. Lynda talks me through the range and how their products are chemical free, thus being as natural as nail polish can get. My inner experimentalist veers towards metallic toes but I decide to check out the new Spring collection of catwalk inspired candy colours - sky blue, pistachio green, lilac and coral. I decide to go for the latter – Coral 3 – a product that has been selling like hot cakes. I apologise for my unkempt, chippedbeyond-repair grey fi ngernails and the fact that I won’t match my soon-to-be coral coloured tootsies. Lynda flashes her multicoloured fi ngers; the result of using herself as a guinea pig for her products. A perk of the job.

Lynda and her sister Joanna opened in 2009, inspired by Lynda’s time spent working in New York. The pic ‘n’ mix bespoke menu of treatments including fibreglass nails, purifying mask, toe/ fi nger waxing and exfoliating scrubs is clearly influenced by her time across the pond and Lynda appears to be on a mission to bring us Brits up to speed with our glamorous American compadres. The mani - pedi culture is, however, not something that I belong to and my confession that this is my very fi rst pedicure is met with a sort of openmouthed horror. Of course, I’ve been told by friends that ‘I don’t know what I’m missing’, that they become something of an addiction; but I can’t be alone in the notion that because of the British climate, our poor feet are hidden away for the majority of the year and maintaining a pretty pair of feet is a little pointless. However, as I’m soon to discover, it is not so much the ‘showing off’ aspect of pedicures that is the appeal, but more the fun, social experience that it is and the idea that we should pamper a part of our bodies that tends to be over worked and under-appreciated. My treatment begins with a shape and buffering followed by a muchneeded hard-skin scrub all over. I can’t help but relax as I sit back with a cup of tea and have a divine cocoa butter and oil exfoliator massage; my feet don’t quite know what’s hit them! They’re wrapped in a hot towel and - voila! - a fresh, baby-soft, new pair greet me.

Although the word ‘massage’ can only be a good thing, I feel a little apprehensive as the pedicurist reaches into what I can only describe as a steaming slow-cooker and takes out some piping hot plastic rocks with tongs. These are placed under and on top of my feet and in-between the toes. “Too hot?” she asks, “No...” I wince. The sensation is similar to stepping into a boiling hot bath; uncomfortable to begin with but pretty soon you get accustomed to it and the heat pulsing through feels like it’s working its magic. Having been wrapped in stones and another hot towel for ten minutes, I’m treated to yet another massage, this time with the stones themselves rubbed into my feet. It makes me realise how neglected they’ve been and how beneficial a one-hour appointment every now and then can be - not to mention enjoyable! The polish is applied carefully and I’m left with a shining set of beautiful toenails that I continue to admire throughout the rest of the day. It’s no wonder that Lynda and her team are fully booked with clients both new and regular. An inexpensive, relaxing and fun experience, I wonder why I hadn’t indulged sooner - and leave with a promise to return to acquire some matching fi ngernails!  Nailgirls 50 Cross St, Islington, N1 2BA 020 7359 2772 nailgirls.co.uk

JOINT VENTURE

Wish Wish you you were were here? here? Wish you were here?

Mræ Brianæ Cohenæ fromæ Theæ Londonæ Orthopaedicæ Clinicæ givesæ hisæ expertæ adviceæ onæ copingæ withæ jointæ pain

I often wake up in the middle of the night with a terrible pain in my shoulder and it’s difficult to move my arm above my head in the morning. Help! The pain you describe is commonly associated either with inflammation in the area or may indicate damage to the tendons themselves. This type of pain is often much worse at night, causing the shoulder to be painful to lay on, waking you from sleep. The difficulty you’re experiencing in using your arm above head height or reaching behind your back, is either due to pain or a restriction in your range of shoulder movement as a result of a ‘frozen shoulder’ or adhesive capsulitis. In the first instance, simple anti-inflammatory medication may help. If your symptoms don’t improve within a week or so, then I would advise you to see your GP for referral to a consultant for further investigations. I’m a graphic designer and I’ve noticed that my fingers feel numb and my wrist aches badly after a day at work Do you think I’m causing long term damage? Firstly, it is important to ensure that you take regular breaks from keyboard work, even for short periods, as this alone may help alleviate your symptoms. You could also have an ergonomic assessment of your work area to ensure that your desk layout, key board height and mouse are optimal. While your symptoms are common amongst frequent computer users, if the problem persists, then it may indicate an underlying problem of nerve compression at the wrist, commonly known as carpal tunnel syndrome or tendon inflammation and you may need to see your GP for further investigations. I’ve just taken up tennis to get fit in the summer months, but I’m getting an awful pain in my arm and elbow when I serve. Do I need to see a specialist? Often taking up a new sport or exercise regime can cause an underlying musculoskeletal problem to become evident. If the problem with your arm is persistent then I certainly would advise that you consult your GP for advice as to whether referral to a specialist for further investigation, for instance with radiographs or scans, is appropriate.

I

’m not really a morning person - it takes a lot to get me out of bed early! So, when you find me wide awake at 4am in the silent pre-dawn darkness of a Cambodian village, standing in front of my guesthouse, you should know that something fairly special is in the offing. Right on time my lift arrives. A smartly dressed Khmer chap on a 150cc scooter, he’s even brought along a thermos of fresh local coffee; quality strong espresso sweetened with condensed milk, delicious and just the thing to get Page the heart started on this chilly morning. I clamber on to the back of the bike and cling on tight as we speed off down the dusty street, deserted apart from a few local dogs patrolling their patch and a group of local ladies on their way to the market for the freshest produce of the day. It’s a short ride out to our destination, around 15-20 minutes or so, and when we get there it’s still pitch black. The only light is from the bare bulbs on the many small stalls hawking fresh baguettes filled with delicious pate or fried eggs (a legacy of Cambodia’s French colonial past). I purchase breakfast for 2000 riel (about 40p!) and head away from the crowds to find a nice quiet spot to set up my tripod and await the dawn. Ever so slowly the sky starts to change from inky black, to dark purple, to deep pink. Looking like an artwork by Monet, fantastic shapes and spires starts to emerge, indistinct in the morning mist but slowly becoming clearer as the light builds. Finally I can clearly make out what I came here to see, the unforgettable view of Angkor Wat in the golden light of dawn. Built in the 12th century and still the world’s largest religious building, this is one of the finest sights in all of Asia and indeed the world. I might not be a morning person, but for this inspiring moment I’d get up early on any day of the week!

ITÍ Sæ ALLæ ABOUT,æ GOODæ MANNA

Helenæ Baronæ finds out if healthy, nutritious food can also be gourmet, at Manna in Primrose Hill THE LOW DOWN

S

equestered in a quiet road off the main strip of shops and restaurants in Primrose Hill is a restaurant you should know about. Manna serves vegan (yes, vegan) food. But disbelievers, don’t be disheartened; don’t labour under the blinkers of prejudice or opinion: Manna is the self-proclaimed finest and oldest vegetarian dining house in Europe. It’s a bold claim - but one that I’m inclined to believe, having searched the continent pretty extensively (and often in vain) for truly great veggie dining experiences. Our small nation probably has more to offer to anyone following a meat-free diet than any of its near neighbours. And among the many vegetarian restaurants I’ve had the good fortune to visit in the UK, Manna is very much the best. The thing is, to have a passion for food is not about adopting an ‘I’ll eat anything that moves’ mantra. Eating ‘gator steaks or wombat chowder once a week does

not a premier gastronome make. The team behind Manna understand that. And as a result, they go further than anyone in reducing the cavernous conceptual divide between ‘foodie’ and ‘veggie’. And they’re no hippy commune cafe, if that’s what you’re thinking (much as I love those). Manna offers something more elegant and grown-up, even compared to well-loved meat-free restaurants like Mildred’s of Soho and Saf of Shoreditch. The latter pair replace the stereotypical veggie restaurant’s boho decor with sleek contemporary design. Manna, on the other hand, does fine dining, pure and simple. The interior even resembles that of neighbouring restaurant Odette’s with its prohibition-era period feel and low lighting. It’s immediately inviting and cosy… but not too cosy. There remains an entirely pleasing air of sophistication. Talking to owner Robin Swallow, it’s brought to my attention that Manna has been in existence for over 40 years! A surprising and worthy achievement

and one that sets a happy precedent for other businesses in the area seeking to do something a little different and a little daring. “We’re a real local landmark,” Robin tells me. “We’ve owned the restaurant since 1995, but its reputation has been here since the ‘60s.” Such longevity must stem at least in part from the thriving counter-cultural and liberal literary community for which the local area is famous. Certainly the full house of diners on my visit seem relaxed, familiar and - not to put too fine a point on it - like genuine fans of the restaurant. Robin agrees: “We get a lot of repeat custom. The locals have fun, they know the staff… this is a great place to work. The whole place is a labour of love.” It would seem that this is where the cool cats on a health-kick come, and possibly the yoga crowd that frequent the nearby Triyoga Health Centre. Although labelled a vegetarian restaurant, Manna actually takes things one step further and serves only vegan

food. “It was easier to be one thing,” reasons Robin. “Not having to cater for the two and prepare things separately [is more efficient]... and it makes no difference really. We are still about the same thing: fresh, seasonal ingredients and exciting dishes that are in no way compromised.” The menu is definitely a sight for sore eyes, tickling the tastebuds while ticking every ethical box too. The dishes are delicious, diverse and exhibit a real connoisseur’s approach to ingredients and flavours. They’re also socially and ethically responsible, of course. “Vegan is the new vegetarian,” Robin lets on with a smile. “There’s such a big movement. You don’t have to actually be a vegetarian or vegan, but why not come and experience some of Manna’s cuisine in Primrose Hill – everybody wants to come to Primrose Hill!” I couldn’t agree more. My dining partner and I have come on a lovely Friday evening, and the after-work crowds are drinking al fresco along the strip. The whole area is abuzz, which only adds to the light, lovely kick of our bottle of (organic, vegan) wine.

THE FOOD We munch on as the twilight dims outside, both feeling rather smug at sampling such wonderful flavours while stocking up on our vitamins. It’s like ingesting pure health – I had Indonesian Satay for starters- baked marinated tofu skewers served with raw salad and topped with a nest of crisp rice noodles - Polenta Galette as my main - polenta cake, grilled courgette and basil cashew

“WE’RE A REAL LOCAL LANDMARK. WE’VE OWNED THE RESTAURANT SINCE 1995, BUT ITS REPUTATION HAS BEEN HERE SINCE THE ‘60S. cheese served with a cherry tomato and roasted red pepper sauce and a carrot and fennel salad. I indulged in a beautifully tasty apple and blueberry crumble for dessert. My partner tried a butternut squash and sweet potato soup, penne pasta with field mushrooms, courgettes and garden peas as a main with an apple, carmelized pecan and cranberry puff pastry (served with a calvados caramel sauce) to finish. The cashew cheese is one among many revelations – they ought to put this stuff in pots and sell it. My one criticism would be that the ice-cream did not achieve the full-on creaminess of normal, full-fat ice-cream. But hey, you can’t have it all. The truth is, all the food was top-notch and there was none of the feeling of over-sated heaviness at the end of the meal. So many restaurant trips can leave you wanting to crawl home to bed nursing your bursting belly. At Manna, a sense of balance and moderation prevails, and we left pleasantly full and fuelled up for a night on the tiles. We also felt

like we’d done a little bit of good for the environment and our fellow man, having consumed only Fair Trade and in-season products. (One of Manna’s suppliers even forages for foods or herbs naturally occurring in the wild, rather than growing them!) All told, Manna is a luxe restaurant that just happens to serve appetising, healthy and tremendously high-quality food. Being a bit different, it’s the perfect venue for birthday and private parties; the ambiance is even conducive to a romantic meal. And of course, the leafy residential streets of Primrose Hill make for an idyllic after-dinner stroll. I’m somewhat jealous Manna is not my local... but I’ll be back soon. It is, after all, the fi nest vegetarian restaurant in Europe. No argument from me on that score.  Manna, 4 Erskine Road, Primrose Hill, NW3 3AJ 020 7722 8028, mannav.com 39

MAKI ROLLS BY MANNA, PRIMROSE HILL INGREDIENTS (FOR 2 ROLLS)

METHOD

• 1 RED BEETROOT – JULIENNED INTO THIN MATCHSTICKS • 1 CARROT – JULIENNED INTO THIN MATCHSTICKS • 1 AVOCADO – HALVED AND THEN CUT INTO LONG STRIPS • 1 CUP OF QUINOA • 2 TOASTED NORI SHEETS • 2 CUPS WATER • 1 TABLESPOON RICE VINEGAR • 2 TABLESPOONS AGAVE SYRUP • SUSHI ROLLING MAT

• Bring water and quinoa to boil. Once boiling, turn heat to low and cover pan. Cook until soft 10 – 15 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in agave and rice vinegar. Let mixture cool to room temperature. • Place nori sheet, shiny side down on sushi mat. Use ½ cup of quinoa and spread out onto nori ( it is helpful to dip hands in cold water while doing this). Leave ½ inch of nori uncovered at bottom. Now place some avocado, beetroot, and carrots onto the ½ inch part of the nori. Starting from the bottom, roll the sushi away from you. Make sure you do not roll the mat into your sushi. Once you have finished, squeeze mat tightly around roll to ensure that it does not fall apart when you cut into pieces. • Now you can cut your sushi into 6 – 8 pieces. Serve with tamari and wasabi.

If you’re looking for a restaurant that’s offering something different, there’s only one place to go – for the finest in Moroccan food head to Maghreb. With a menu that includes harira, taboulleh and tanjines, the richness and diversity of this phenomenal cuisine is captured beautifully. The bar is also the perfect spot to open a bottle of wine from their extensive wine list that covers Morocco and beyond.

“Maghreb, is a dream of a restaurant... ...tackling the full repertoire of Moroccan classics with a flair and attention to detail that few can rival.” – Time Out Magazine

Experimenting with daring, weird and wonderful flavours saw his attendants happily pay out £100 a head. The restaurant offers 3, 6, 9, even 12-course tasting menus, living up to it’s ethos as a mecca for food-lovers. Furthermore, the restaurant is housed in the former Bethnal Green Town Hall (a stately and impressive building) and boasts an equally stately and refi ned-looking bar. mazingly, before it became a sophisticated bar and an upstanding addition to Gordon Ramsey’s collection of restaurants, this grade II listed 19th century building had been derelict for over twenty years. Thanks to renovation by the Park Village East development, the York and Albany is up and running and boasts a wealth of adventurous cocktails as well as an impressive list of British Whiskeys. It serves seasonal food by Head chef Colin Buchan and looks over the picturesque Regent’s Park. There are ten luxurious hotel rooms upstairs, a fresh produce deli and cocktail masterclasses on the grounds and the restaurant serves as a delightful wedding venue. Other facilities include 3-course Ramsey picnics to take to the park and a dining ‘experience’ which allows guests a unique view of the chefs at work.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

A PUBLIC AFFAIR

Gemmaæ Billingtonæ discoversæ whatÍ sæ behindæ theæ doorsæ atæ Publicæ House,æ IslingtonÍ sæ bestæ keptæ secret...

I

wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Public House, a ‘boutique’ restaurant nestled in a side road off Islington’s Upper Street, but behind the plain white front entrance - complete with homely curtains – l found a place quite like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Public House is small, cosy and brimming with quirky features and character. The front section is a dedicated bar area, the back is a relaxed, boudoirstyle restaurant, and as I enter it took a moment to absorb it all: the ornate antique furniture, chunky wooden tables, gloriously OTT wax-smothered candleholders, miss-matched rugs and Chesterfields. There is an undeniably British feel to Public House in its eccentricity, but there’s a cheeky French twist too; a jazzy 20’s era soundtrack plays in the background and suddenly, I wish I’d dressed up a bit more. My companion and I are whisked to the bar and Simon, the host, is keen to get the evening started with a couple of pre-dinner aperitifs. Rolling off a few suggestions, it is clear that he is a man who knows his profession; I assure him that we are in his hands entirely. We opt for a decadent-sounding Martini, served with blue cheese on the side in lieu of olives and containing a tiny, devilish shot of absinthe; on a dreary Tuesday evening it seems more than appropriate. Our drinks are crafted with care, expert precision and passion whilst we discuss the frankly dizzying array of spirits, liquors, wines, champagne and ales available, and the unconventional décor a lone copy of Catch 22 and a splatter of toy soldiers stuck to the ceiling above our heads. The range of drinks and exotic cocktails almost steal the show and after a second round of aperitifs -

a beautifully bitter concoction of Campari and Havana Silver Rum - we decide that it’s time to have dinner. The brainchild of Simon Sheena, Public House has been running since 2008, with the restaurant side open for the last year and a half. Far removed from trendy chain restaurants, it’s glamorous and grownup but with a homely, unassuming atmosphere. It’s a week night but there’s a steady stream of customers - stylish groups of friends and city boys stripped of their ties and suit jackets - and Mickey, our waiter, makes sure everyone is happy and attended to with unwavering and genuine consideration. The menu - described as modern European cuisine - is selective, boasting exciting yet unpretentious dishes. For starters I choose grilled marinaded squid with courgette and red pepper. Accustomed as I am to squid being served in batter, it is easy to forget how delicious it is on its own. My partner takes advantage of the season and has an asparagus and pea soup that is beautifully simple but rich in flavour. The meals take mere minutes to arrive and as an accompaniment I have the cocktail of the week (surely it would be rude not to) – a ‘French 75’ -comprised of gin, fresh lemon and sugar topped with champagne. It tastes just like a sweet, delicate crêpe. For the main, I go for sea bream with greens, aubergine purée and caperberries which arrives artistically presented. The attention to detail is such a strong point at Public House and every dish and drink is crafted with creativity and care and perfectly proportioned. The fish is served over a bed of greens and is a

delicious blend of textures and flavours. My companion chooses a leg of duck; the crisp, salty flavour is accompanied perfectly with chunks of sweet potato. There is of course room for dessert and as soon as Mickey merely hints at the suggestion of the dark chocolate truffle torte, I’m sold. It’s served with 3 small berries on top and I take my time to enjoy it, happily helping my partner with the orange trinity burnt cream with biscotti dish he has ordered too; both of which are as delicious as they sound. At the end of the meal I am easily persuaded to have a drop of Chartreuse VEP instead of a tea or coffee (although of course there is an extensive range of both) and we (somehow) manage to prop ourselves up at the bar once more for a final night cap. Discovering Public House really does feel like uncovering a great secret; it’s fun yet inexpensive and feels like a real treat, whether popping in for a swift half and bar snacks or making a night of it. In contrast to other eateries, there’s a feeling that you could stay the entire evening - never feeling that you’re outstaying your welcome. By the time we leave, the impending train journey home is a heavy thought and I’m in the mood to carry on the party into the wee small hours. There’s always next time.  54 Islington Park Street N1 1PX 020 7359 6070 Boutiquepubs.com

BLOOMIN’ MARVELLOUS With Summer here and thoughts turning to the great outdoors, we thought it was about time that we caught up with some of the most imaginative and fabulous florists in North London to get an insight into how they create their impressive bouquets...

THE FLOWER APPRECIATION SOCIETY Ellie Jauncey and Anna Day from The Flower Appreciation Society... How did the company start? A: We met working in a lovely pub and soon realised that not only did we have a mutual love of Neil Young, but also flowers. I was just fi nishing a year’s floristry course at Capel Manor College and Ellie had been working all summer with her mother who is also a florist. We started working together almost by accident when a big wedding needed four hands. You both come from creative backgrounds - how does this influence your work? E: Massively. We like thinking about all the details, not just the flowers: My background in textile design comes out in the way we work with colour, shape and composition. Anna’s degree in illustration inspires our cards, packaging and the design of our website.

Amazingly and luckily we share the same vision, and rarely disagree on the way something should look or should be. What is the usual process behind creating your bouquets? E: The website is unusual.. have a look! People come to us because they notice our quirky, wild and natural style. Every bouquet starts with a crack-of-dawn trip to the flower market where we always get excited about what we fi nd. Then we bring our fresh treasures back to the workshop and make them into a bouquet unique and individually stunning. If someone commissions you to do something with a crazy idea how do you go about it? A: We love a mad idea and rise to the challenge! A recent project involved filling seats of the Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square with plants and

flowers for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra! Each project we approach with enthusiasm and individuality…We don’t say no because the most outrageous project is exhilarating to realise. Planning is essential- the more time we spend on planning, the more satisfying the fi nished job. How do you come up with unusual pieces- like the flower hats? A: An old 1950’s floral swimming cap found in my grandmother’s trunk was the starting point! We liked the idea of freshening up this iconic fashion accessory. When you think like this the world is full of potential transformations.

28/05/2011 21:30

INTERIORS How long does it take you to create one of your designs? E: It depends on what we’re doing. The flower cap took both of us about four hours; a big wedding will take two days and a lot of hands. There are always long days because we have to start at the flower market to get the freshest flowers. If you had complete free reign, what kind of bouquets would you put together?

the spring and summer months we use as many English suppliers as possible.

REBEL REBEL Athena Duncan and Mairead Curtin are the girls behind the glamorous bouquets of Rebel Rebel...

A: Our dream bouquet would consist of ranunculas, blush anemones, peonies, lilac, dill and honeysuckle plucked from our own back garden! Essentially we want to surprise and not repeat ourselves, and also delight customers with something they had not thought of. Do you have a dream event that you would love to decorate? E: There is a great well of artistic and creative talent in our part of London. We would love to mobilise our clever friends to create an explosion of flowers, graphic design, fashion, jewellery, photography, music, printers and painters. How do you source your flowers all year round? E: The markets we use have flowers all year round of course. We try to be as seasonal as we possibly can. In

How did Rebel Rebel come to life? We were friends for years, working together in television. We both had an epiphany one drunken evening while looking at a bunch of flowers one of us had been sent and decided...we could do that! We started in a basement room, just doing flowers for events and parties. Eventually we thought a shop would be a good idea and Broadway Market was the place to be – so here we are! How long does a project like the BAFTAS take? With most big events we start talking about them about four - six months before. The client gives a brief with colours or themes – some clients know exactly what they want, and require almost no artistic input and some are very open to suggestion and love to be presented with a surprise. When the client has agreed the design we then have to finalise exactly how we are going to achieve the look we want, and then we set about ordering the relevant vases, or materials. In one of our

very first jobs – 80 table centres in Grosvenor house – we were also dressing the tables with table cloths. We ordered 80 napkins, one per table of 10! Luckily we spotted the mistake before the event; I’m not sure guests like to share napkins! What has been your favourite creation to work on so far? A: The best thing (just because the image is so arresting) has been the BAFTAs with the red carpet of gladioli. It was a military operation getting it exactly right in the space of time but it looked fantastic. M: My favourite thing was flowers in Westminster Hall for the Pope’s visit to London. It was such a historic occasion, the Hall is so magnificent and I loved the flowers we used. You use a lot of English flowers - what are your favourites to work with? M: Narcissi from Scilly Isles and English sweet peas. Stocks and antirrhinum are such great colours and also smell amazing – the antirrhinum smell of bubblegum. The best has to be English Lilac, which is just totally gorgeous but has a really short season so we have to make the most of it while it’s around. If you could create flowers for anyone - who or what would it be for and what would you use? M: I would like to do Kate Moss’s wedding – though I hear Tracy Emin is organising it, so flowers are probably not top of their list. I would do the most extravagant trailing, scented, gorgeous, vibrant bouquet with all sorts of mad clashing colours with garden roses and peonies and all the fabulous English flowers. Behind The Scenes

ORIONAæ ROBBæ PERSONAL IMAGE CONSULTANT BASED IN ISLINGTON GETTING STARTED

I have been in love with clothes and make-up for as long as I can remember. My family owned a clothes boutique in Poland. My childhood was spent playing dress up, and watching how my mum assisted the customers. I learnt from an early age that styling wasn’t just about picking good clothes to wear, because every body suits something different. It’s about knowing the right fabric, color and shape to choose. The way you look can change the way you feel! My heart was set on a career in fashion at a young age, so I packed my bags and headed for the hustle and bustle of London, taking a short make-up course, and then training as a beauty therapist at the Steiner School. I got a job working in the clothing department at Selfridges while I studied. I gained some valuable experience working there. I dealt with customers on a daily basis and the interaction gave me insight into clients and their varied needs. I also ran a mobile beauty therapy business at the same time. My evenings were spent working with beauty clients and catching episodes of Trinny and Susannah’s first series back in 2001! I knew then what I wanted to do and 12 years later am running Oriona Image Consultancy.

THE JOB

I assist both men and women, from celebrities to corporate clients in wardrobe choices that best suit their

lifestyle and encourage them to embrace their own personal attributes when making style choices. I’m quite the multi-tasking individual, swinging between teaching make-up to styling shoots for magazines to attending London Fashion Week or London Academy of Film and TV. I have collaborated with some terrific people over the years. I recently finished working with RWD magazine, styling the look books for Adidas and The Duffer of St. George. I also design makeup for Browns on St. Molton Street. A lot of my time is spent researching ideas for my make-up by visiting libraries, flower markets, and galleries. Its amazing being able to look at a dress in a shop and just know which body shape it would suit, or which one of my clients would best suit a particular pattern or colour.

MY DAY

My day begins at 6am starting with a sip of hot water and lemon, Bikram yoga or kettle bells in the park. By 8.30 am the kids are ready and we set off for school. I head to my office and go through emails. I usually start writing up my columns in the morning. I write a beauty must-have column for Elite magazine, on the hunt for the latest products, so I’m constantly checking fashion websites, blogs and trends just so I’m up to date and in the loop. Having successfully launched my

own signature make-up brushes, I check emails for requests, and send out fresh orders and answer questions regarding the new range. At 11am I see my first client. My wardrobe is very well organized and color coordinated. Having way more than is necessary causes clutter so twice a year I do a ‘wardrobe detox’. I throw away any old pieces, and styles that have not been worn in a year. My clients love me helping them with that as many of them just get so emotionally attached to items! I have a pair of black wax jeans by Twenty8Twelve which I practically live in. I can take my client for up to 4 hours of personal shopping so I need to be comfortable; I wear flat shoes but I’ll usually have a pair of heels in my bag just in case! 10pm is bedtime, but I’m still going through more of my emails, and constantly updating my blog and website. I have just started my new project which is working on Virtual Styling, so my clients will be able to connect with me with via video chat, which is perfect for those working long hours in the office, then heading straight to a dinner or party. They may not have the time to meet personally so I can give them a fashion first aid online! I truly love what I do, and enjoy every minute of it. imageconsultantuk.com 53

TECHNOLOGY

HOWæ TOæ STAYæ OUTæ

OFæ TROUBLEæ ONæ

TWITTER

Over the last few years, Twitter has become as much a household name as Apple or Google. Its more recent exposure has been rather controversial, with talk of superinjunctions and footballers. As Twitter agree to release details of account holders, it seems incredibly easy to end up in trouble using only “140 characters or less”.

To make sure you don’t get caught out, I’ve put together these top tips to stay safe, while remaining social. DON’T LET OTHERS TWEET FOR YOU Well known Australian actor Hugh Jackman once referred to the Sydney Opera House, the ‘Opera Center’. He owned up that his tweets were sometimes dictated over the phone to someone else. Tweet:“Having lunch on the harbor across from the Opera Center. Loving life!” TRY NOT TO USE A NATIONAL DISASTER AS A MARKETING CAMPAIGN The Microsoft search engine team at Bing decided they would raise money for the Japanese earthquake only if their tweet was republished (or retweeted) by others. A huge backlash followed which ended with Microsoft instantly donating $100,000, along with an apology. Tweet:“How you can #SupportJapan [link] For every retweet, @bing will give $1 to Japan quake victims, up to $100K”

TALK SENSE Paris Hilton has been famously caught tweeting a number of rather embarrassing updates. Tweet:“No, no, I didn’t go to England; I went to London.” REMEMBER EVERYONE’S LISTENING (POTENTIALLY) After being offered a job at Internet firm Cisco, Twitter user ‘theconner’ let his followers know. Tweet:“Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.” Hours later, and having withdrawn the job offer, Cisco responded.

Tweet:“Who is the hiring manager? I’m sure they would love to know you will hate the work.We here at Cisco are versed in the web.” DON’T SAY BAD THINGS ABOUT CLIENTS While on a trip to give a paid talk to Fed Ex in Memphis, PR exec James Andrews made his true feelings about the town, known. After the tweet, he and his employer felt “compelled to apologise”. Luckily, Fed Ex accepted. Tweet:“True confession but I’m in one of those towns where I scratch my head and say ‘I would die if I had to live here!’”

CULTURE

When did you start Dj-ing and when did it suddenly become a career for you? I started Djing when I was 12! I caught the bug. I was listening to a lot of grunge and then I heard a mixtape by DJ Hype and it was the best thing I’d ever heard – all this scratching. I couldn’t get a gig to save my life in my early twenties but I’ve always played music – I just came through late and was in the right place at the right time, when suddenly the kind of music I was playing became cool.

Tell us about your record label San City High – what kind of acts do you sign and why? I just love to work with unsigned acts, promoting new talent. I broke through thanks to strangers who were willing to believe in me – I think it’s so important to carry that belief on, especially if, like me, there isn’t that support for what you’re doing in the beginning. The label feels like a logical progression; we focus on the first record and profits are split equally between artist and label –

What music do you listen to mostly? What did you grow up listening to? Everything! I’ve got a really short attention span so I like the things I like – from movie soundtracks and classical scores to ‘80s electro. I probably listen to sounds of the sea the most [laughs]! I think actually I’ve always been open-minded about genres – spending pocket money on vinyl when I was young I had to economise – I remember playing a lot of my mum’s records like Jefferson Airplane and Cat Stevens, mixing them in with my own stuff. I think its hilarious that I get to play Vivaldi in my sets for example – live is so important to me and I have so much enthusiasm for it. The music I play is about putting on a good show and interacting with the crowd. What’s the story behind your name? A lot of it has to do with the fact that I wasn’t in to the same music as anyone at school; I had no support from my peers – I mean I grew up in Essex; not great for dance music! Kissy Sell Out is supposed to be an ironic name anticipating my own failure. It’s nice that I didn’t [fail]. Since I put out my first record and handed it out on the streets of London, it’s just taken off – it’s been bonkers. My life changed within a fortnight.

my radio shows. The new album is my own material and feels like a landmark because I’ve changed a lot in the last year and I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever done – I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make anything that good again. How and when did the Radio 1 gig come about? Do you think radio is still important in this day and age? The best radio shows out there are the ones that play great records and to me, that’s important. I got talent-spotted for Radio 1 – I never had any aspiration to be on radio –I wanted to make records and design album artwork. But once I was given such a great opportunity I just wanted to try my absolute best. I treat every radio show like it’s my last one. What is your approach to the Kissy Club Remixes? Well, tracks are remixed together for the show - you can’t just play a track by The Melvins and mix it into Armand Van Helden and then Silverchair. I re-master everything, put some hi-hats in…I do it very quickly and it’s not really with the intent of changing anything but more to make it acceptable for the show and my personal style. Have you done many artist collaborations? Not a great deal actually. I’ve never had the urge…often I think collaborations can be a publicity stunt. Having said that, I’ve worked with Oh Snap!! on the radio show as well as MC Cobra, who were fantastic.

this isn’t about the money for me. It’s just about nurturing talent and we’ve achieved a real family dynamic with the artists. How would you describe your style? Would you say you have a signature style? What’s your approach to remixing? What makes a good remix for you? I’d say its electro-speed garage with a bit of Vivaldi! I don’t really do a lot of remixes anymore – I do re-edits for

What is your favourite venue to play in the world and why? Even though I’ve enjoy the views and the tremendous journeys I’ve had in foreign places, playing to 20,000 people in Australia then 8,000 in Russia... I have to say the UK based venues are still favourites, somewhere like Sankeys in Manchester that has such musical heritage. ‘Wild Romance’ is out now kissysellout.com

MORTGAGE LENDERS IGNORE MOST OF THEM

The latest John Charcol Mortgage Index confirms the declining popularity of fixed rates, with only 41.0% of clients choosing a fixed rate in April, down from 50.5% in March and 56.1% in February, which was the strongest month for fixed rates since mid 2009. The trend so far in May suggests a further fall in the popularity of fixed rates. Ray Boulger, Senior Technical Manager at John Charcol, comments on this and other findings.

who want the keep open the option to switch to a fi xed rate if or some clients, and when it looks attractive to do so. of course, “We said in last month’s commentary ‘All this suggests the low payments market is running ahead of itself in terms of the timing and for the initial speed of Bank Rate increases and we expect the take up of period is the top priority, but fi xed rates to decline further until the best 5 year rates fall the shorter the timeframe being back below 4% to reduce the premium over variable rates considered the less risk there to a more acceptable level.’ Fixed rate pricing is indeed now is of significant rate rises and falling, on the back of lower gilt yields and swap rates. 5 hence for clients in this category year swaps have fallen back to 2.57% and at this level have there is often a strong case for retraced almost half of the increase from their all time low of choosing a variable rate, either 1.99% hit at the end of October last year.
