I

personally have travel on the brain all year round, but it is at this time of year in particular, when spring is starting to blossom, that my desire to venture abroad is at its peak. Here at Zest, we always highlight the best places to visit both at home and overseas, and this month we’ve reported on the beautiful history-soaked city of Bath and my recent trip to Cyprus (P.36). Known as the island of love because of its association with the goddess Aphrodite (and the ostentatiously romantic scenery), it’s hard not to fall head-over-heels for this small country of immense beauty and historical fascination. It’s a local secret that now is the best time to visit, when the island is in full bloom and boasts abundant natural splendour.

This month we’re welcoming the new season and, in-keeping with this bright and bold issue, the theme of our fashion shoot is based around the current print clash trend. Shot during last month’s London Fashion Week, it’s a breath of fresh air to welcome a trend that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Mix it up, pile on the bling and throw away the fashion rule book - it’s all about having fun.

BRIGHT

SPARK Helen Baron speaks to fresh new presenting talent, Robyn Bright

M

y interview with Robyn Bright is the first she’s ever given – not that she’s a stranger to the process. Having broken into the world of presenting at a young age, she quickly secured spots on major mainstream shows and has honed her interviewing skills on a slew of renowned musicians and actors. Not bad for a girl who hadn’t really considered presenting as a career. “I hadn’t thought about it – I was a model beforehand and my agency had a casting for a T4 presenter. I didn’t expect to do well, but I kept getting callbacks and, after a screen test, I was asked to join a music show called Freshly Squeezed.” It’s little surprise that Robyn’s made her way on to our screens – for one thing, she’s absolutely stunning. In the past she’s appeared in advertising campaigns for Ted Baker, Levi’s and French Connection; she’s also been shot by top photographer Rankin as well as being booked for countless catwalk shows. Even a brief glance through her portfolio highlights the rarer, more delicate side to her beauty – something that can be missed on film, where her poppy persona can distract from the fineness of her features. Her modelling

shots reveal a more womanly allure. I ask if she still models and what she makes of the industry, having started at the tender age of fifteen. “You have to be quick-witted,” she surmises, “and savvy and thickskinned… but it taught me patience, so it’s been helpful in my TV career – which keeps me so busy that I model less nowadays.” However, she adds that

who guided me through the process as I was new to it all.” She admits to getting a little nervous when interviewing. “As much as it’s fun to chat to people, at the end of the day you’re there to do a job and to get something out of the interviewee. At the same time you have to keep things seemingly conversational.” She tells me about the time that Moby came into the studio. “I was so excited because there was this musical god just sitting on the sofa with a cup of tea… it was awesome.” Interviewing musical greats surely stood her in good stead for the gig with 35mm – her latest role on Sky TV’s premier movie programme alongside presenting heavyweight Alex Zane. A month after signing with a talent agency, Robyn was put forward for a screen test. Impressively, she won the job and puts this down to

“AS MUCH AS IT’S FUN TO CHAT TO PEOPLE, AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU’RE THERE TO DO A JOB AND TO GET SOMETHING OUT OF THE INTERVIEWEE” she still attends the odd casting. Her initial work behind the camera no doubt gave her a greater confidence when it came to presenting, and acclimatised her to the world of shooting. Though we agree on how long and tiring a shoot can be, Robyn clearly loves every minute of her newfound career path; you get the impression she still sometimes pinches herself. “It’s fantastic,” she says, “T4 was such a chilled environment and I got to work with Matt Edmondson and Jameela Jamil. I also had an amazing producer

INTERVIEW

“I HADN’T REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT IT - I WAS A MODEL BEFOREHAND AND MY AGENCY HAD A CASTING FOR A T4 PRESENTER. I DIDN’T EXPECT TO DO WELL BUT I KEPT GETTING CALL BACKS AND AFTER A SCREEN TEST, I WAS ASKED TO JOIN A MUSIC SHOW CALLED FRESHLY SQUEEZED”

her interest in film, saying, “I like to call myself a bit of a movie geek.” Obsessed with Disney, she is the proud owner of the entire collection (on VHS as well as DVD) but is reluctant to limit her love of the movies to a particular genre. Scarface, Napoleon Dynamite and Pulp Fiction are all favourites and films that she has watched ‘a million times over’. It would seem that 35mm provides the perfect excuse to watch films as many times as she cares to. “I’ve found that as I’m so interested in film, I don’t have to research quite so much as I did for Freshly Squeezed. Of course, it helps to do some homework, so I always watch the films – the conversation with an actor could go down any route!” Her most impressive interviewee to date, she says, is John Hurt. “He came into the studio to talk about Melancholia

and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I was pretty overwhelmed to be speaking to someone so respected in his field.” Robyn is clearly delighted to be fronting Sky’s flagship movie show and to be under the tutelage of her copresenter and erstwhile film critic, Alex Zane. “He is hilarious,” she admits, “I had no idea how well known he was until the Tintin premiere; the crowd were shouting for Alex and wanting to get a photo with him. I think he can teach me a lot about the business.” It seems that this happy-go-lucky North London girl has found her calling in life and is truly content; as we speak, she is due to move from Angel to Canonbury and we chat about the virtues of Islington life. “I’m fairly new to this particular area but I grew up in West Hampstead”, she says. “I love living here because it’s like a little community… there’s so much happening. Mostly, I can’t wait to try out all the roasts at the local pubs and get down to Screen on the Green.” As we sign off, Robyn pipes up with a nervous “Was it alright?” She thanks me effusively for taking the time and it strikes me that this kind of genuine courtesy can be somewhat rare in the entertainment industry… I hope she retains the sweetness that has obviously served her well in the business so far. Her future is bright, the future (of presenting) is Robyn. 13

BIDDING TIME If the thrill of the auction room has always eluded you, now might be the time rethink your stance. Katie Randall explores Criterion Auctioneers

S

mack! The gable hits the table, it’s all said and done; after much to-ing and fro-ing between bidders, another elegant antique lot has found a new home. Next, a brand new picture flashes up on the television screen, and bidding begins all over again. I could get used to this. I am, of course, at an auction with Criterion, purveyors of fine antiques and contemporary furnishings. The house was founded by stockbroker Graham Richards in 1989. Addison Gelpey got involved with the business in 2004 when he was looking to launch his own house and found the perfect site in Wandsworth, “I didn’t know anything about auctions so looked for a partner and found Criterion in Islington.” he says. In today’s consumer society with big brands offering bargain basement prices, auction houses can be overlooked. Criterion’s Peter Ball admits that ‘brown furniture’ - freestanding dark wood furniture - still has a stigma attached to it. “Second hand furniture is solid and will keep its value up to a point.” He says. “In twenty years time you can give it to your son or daughter. With modern reproduction furniture, you’ll be chopping it up for firewood in that amount of time.”

In a world where you can have almost anything your heart desires at the click of a button, it makes a nice change to work for a purchase. However, Criterion is by no means stuck in the past. The house launched its online bidding option six months ago and has been hugely popular The service means that you can join the auction live online and bid from the comfort of your own home. Addison explains that the process at auction could not be simpler. Buyers can view the items in person or peruse them online. On auction day, you register at

background that lead him to an interest in antiques. His parents met in Kathmandu in 1968, where they had an audience with His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. At His Holiness’ request, they ran an inn at Sikhim in 1972. Gelpey recalls, “His Holiness became fond of me, naming me Karma Norbu (Jewel of the Karmapa) and asked my parents if I could stay with him to be trained as a monk.” His path changed when a civil war broke out and his parents took him away. Gelpey decided to open an auction house because his parents used to deal in Himalayan antiques. “I wanted to go back to my roots” he says. The expert reveals that, as well as bargains, they do have lots that fly out of the auction room. “The highest selling item was in one of our advertised fine sales. We had a Houdin Mystery clock in at £8,000 and it sold for £22,000”. His golden rule at auction is not to get carried away, “always set yourself a maximum bid and stick to it.” Criterion Auctions of London now have over 1,200 varied lots on offer every week. Their experienced team ensure that you receive the highest level of service, making the auction process exciting and easy for everyone to enjoy.

SECOND HAND FURNITURE IS SOLID AND WILL KEEP ITS VALUE...IN TWENTY YEARS TIME YOU CAN GIVE IT TO YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER the front desk and they will give you a number to bid with. Alternatively you can leave your maximum bid with the auctioneer who will bid on your behalf. I was fearful of falling into the old trap of raising my hand to scratch my ear, inadvertently spending £500 on a watch. In reality, the auctioneer only responds to a raised number card - no unexpected purchases today. It is equally simple for sellers, who can drop off their items or call or email the house for an appraisal. Addison Gelpey has an incredible

ADVERTISING PROMOTION

NECKS&BACKS EVERYBODY’S GOT ONE The struggle with most people that suffer with bad necks and backs is to know just what to do when the pain and stiffness kicks in

W

e’re always asked, “Should I use hot or cold packs? Should I use paracetamol or ibuprofen? Should I rest or keep moving?” There’s a lot of conflicting information out there on the googlenet and in wikiland, and it can be nigh-on impossible to decipher it all and find out what’s best for you. That’s the single most important thing about seeing a physiotherapist, though: their ability to problemsolve your back or neck as a unique set of bones, muscles, nerves, connective tissues and experiences past and present. A good physiotherapist can help you get to the root of the problem and find the answer to all the questions posed above and many more. That said, as unique as your pain and stiffness may feel, neck and back problems tend to lead to some very identifiable patterns of dysfunction in us all. Recent research has shown that weakness and dysfunction occurs most frequently in the muscles we use to stabilise and guide our joints through everyday movement. In the case of the spine, these are known as the ‘core’ muscles, and without corrective treatment of the dysfunction, there can be little hope of a trouble-free spine in future. “Core stability” you’re probably thinking now. Most of us have heard of it these days. It’s a phrase used the world over in gyms by trainers and aficionados of all things pump, step and

spin. But what exactly does it mean? Ab curls on a Swiss ball? Planks and side planks? Power plates and Pilates? Well, none of the above, actually. But they can all be useful in improving your core stability in the long run. It means exactly what it suggests: to keep the core stable. To extrapolate a little, it means to use your legs and arms efficiently and not to use your spine unnecessarily - that’s the crux of it. To successfully re-establish your core stability, regain control of your spine and to minimise the pressures and demands placed upon it, you need to know what you’re working with. Using a Real-time Ultrasound Scanner, we can see the layers of the ‘core’, identify each individual muscle and watch how it works under both low and high loads. Some people are great with low loads but struggle when the work gets harder - these are usually sporty or active individuals who get backache when exercising. Once you truly understand your core, you’ll know how to use it, how to improve it and how then to look after your spine for good. A big claim, sure, but really it’s like riding a bike or driving: you might get a little rusty when you haven’t done it for a while and a refresher course might be called for, but the basics won’t be lost. You’ll remember to put in the clutch when you change gears, or to signal when you’re turning. And like learning to drive or ride a bike, improving core stability can be a little bit tricky at first. But with repetition and correction, what starts out as a highly cognitive process will easily integrate into your work, sport or daily chores and ultimately become habit. That’s when you can expect a better back and neck, better performance in all things active and generally to feel a lot happier! Physiotherapist, Ellis Taylor from Tatami Health

LOCAL PROFILE

DR TIM BRADSTOCK-SMITH Leading cosmetic dentist and founder of The London Smile Clinic How did you end up in cosmetic dentistry? I chose dentistry aged 15 because I love working with my hands and meeting people. I enjoy both the technical and artistic aspects and I’m a bit of a perfectionist so cosmetic dentistry is perfect for me. When did you set up The London Smile Clinic? I set up the clinic at the end of 1999 and it has been thriving ever since. Dentistry has evolved a lot in the last 10 or so years and our innovations have contributed heavily to these changes. What kind of common problems do you encounter from clients and what solutions can you offer? Clients have the full range of dental health problems as well as aesthetic concerns. I mean, who wouldn’t want a healthy, attractive smile? The most common problems we see are crowding of the front teeth and discolouration, so our most popular treatments are orthodontic alignment with Inman Aligners or Incognito (the ones that are hidden on the inside), porcelain veneers and whitening. Do you think people are investing more in achieving the ‘perfect smile’, even in financially difficult times? It’s a known fact that a great smile is key to career and romantic success. People still want to meet ‘the one’ and get a good job in a recession. What are the most challenging aspects of your job? The most challenging appointments are very long preparations for full mouth reconstructions. These can take 5 or more hours and can take their toll on your eyesight, back and hands, but the transformations make it worth all the effort! What is the best part of your job? I love seeing the positive impact the transformations have on clients’ lives. When patients tell me they can’t stop smiling or they’ve just got engaged or got that new job, it’s a real buzz. Do you think that people are sceptical or even wary

about cosmetic procedures? Everyone has a certain fear of the dentist and a healthy level of scepticism never did anyone any harm. The big test for me is would I have these treatments myself or treat my own family? And the answer is an emphatic yes! I had Incognito braces and whitening, I did smile makeovers with veneers for my mum and sister, Inman Aligner for my cousin to name but a few and they’re all very happy.

What should people be looking out for when researching teeth whitening? The most effective home whitening systems contain hydrogen peroxide, and the maximum legal level in the UK is 6%. The two main in-chair whitening systems are Britesmile and Zoom, which are both owned by the same company. In-chair whitening is a lot faster than home whitening because it is stronger than home gel, is applied in a dry field with the gums protected and is activated by the light. How do you go about finding new procedures and technology and implementing them at the practice? We constantly attend dental conferences and tradeshows as well as staying active on international online dental forums. Everything needs be tried and tested before we implement anything however good it sounds. You are the only UK dentist to hold accreditations from both the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. How does cosmetic dentistry in the States compare with Britain? Up until recently the US was always ahead and even today cosmetic dentistry is more widespread there. However, the technology available here now equals that of the US and, in fact, the increase in adult orthodontics and our more minimally invasive approach to cosmetic dentistry is in many ways more forward thinking that in the US. londonsmile.co.uk 27

HIP ADVICE

The Ancient Art of Traditional Thai Massage now in London

Mr Jig Patel, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at The London Orthopaedic Clinic, gives his expert advice on your aches and pains: I suffer from stiffness and ‘clicking’ in my hips. The pain is sometimes so bad that I wake up in the night. Do you think I need surgery? Common signs associated with hip disorders do include stiffness, clicking, pain and limping and I would advise any patient suffering from these symptoms to see their GP. Unfortunately, night pain often indicates a more serious problem. Pain that affects and even disrupts your daily life is always a significant issue, but can often be resolved with surgery. The type of surgery, whether hip arthroscopy, osteotomy or joint replacement surgery is highly dependent on the problem at hand and the stage of the disease. Your GP should be able to refer you to a specialist orthopaedic consultant for advice. Unfortunately, due to ill health, I’ve put on a large amount of weight over recent years, and have noticed a nagging, aching pain in my knees – do you think it’s caused by my weight? For every kilogram of weight a patient puts on, they carry three kilograms through their knee. Undoubtedly, weight makes a huge difference on the strain a knee has to bear. Clearly, at times of ill-health or immobility, your diet may need careful modifications and appropriate exercises should be taken. Why not try to introduce gentle exercises such as walking and taking the stairs whenever possible to maintain your optimum weight and support your joints. I’m in the final stages of training for the Virgin London Marathon and have recently been experiencing pain in my knees after longer runs. I’m desperate to avoid an injury – any advice? All joints, as well as muscles, may hurt after intensive training and it is very important to gradually build up strength to allow the joints to become accustomed to the chronic strains that they are going to bear. Soft tissues including ligaments, muscles and tendons may become sore after exercise from the build up of inflammatory chemicals. It is clearly important for prospective athletes to undertake significant stretching and warm up exercises as well as warming down. This allows the body to adjust physically and biologically. Good luck! Mr Jig Patel is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee and hip disorders from The London Orthopaedic Clinic, now working in new facilities in Golders Green. TRIED AND TESTED

THE BEAUTY CENTRE WORDS: SOPHIE BURKE

M

y visit to The Beauty Centre has coincided with one of the coldest days of the year thus far, and the frosty temperatures have left my already sensitive skin feeling, dry, irritated and generally in need of some T.L.C. Luckily, as I step through the entrance down a leafy side road just off of the busy St John’s Wood High St, the sleek but inviting décor suggest that I (as well as my visage) will be in safe hands. I am here to test the clinic’s noninvasive Microdermabrasion facial. Hugely popular amongst A-list clientele, the 45 minute treatment is said to leave skin plumped and glowing. Victoria Beckham is said to be a huge fan of its breakout-banishing prowess. Admittedly, I am a little nervous beforehand at how my highly reactive skin will take to such a powerful physical exfoliant, but my lovely therapist Valeria soon calms my nerves with a thorough skin consultation beforehand, where she explains how the Beauty Centre is using a much gentler form of microdermabrasion with spherical crystals rather than the traditional jagged shape, within a

treatment that can be fully customised to suit the individual’s skin needs. She begins by applying vacuum suction to my face, in order to promote lymphatic drainage before the exfoliation itself. Whilst not the most relaxing procedure I’ve ever had, it’s not painful and afterwards I really feel as if my skin has had a good ‘workout’. Next, a gorgeously thick collagen rose mask is applied in harmony with healing and antibacterial LED light therapy, which feels wonderfully soothing. Once the procedure is over, I rush to the mirror and I’m astonished to find how much calmer my complexion looks than when I arrived. I am given the rest of my gel mask to take with me to use later, and I float home, my skin feeling wonderfully clean. The next day, friends and colleagues comment on how glowing my skin looks, and even a couple of weeks on I’m still noticing a difference. Perfect for all types of skin conditions, from acne to aging concerns, this treatment really is one for everyone and would be a perfect gift for Mother’s day. I know I will definitely be back for more. the-beautycentre.com 33

ISLAND IN THE SUN Gemma Billington discovers the beauty of Cyprus in spring...

W

e arrived in Cyprus late at night and one of the first things that struck me on the drive from Larnaca airport to the city of Limassol was how compact a country it is. Though not exactly an astute observation, it was one that would stay with me throughout our short, busy trip. The size and accessibility of the island is something quite unique. Surrounded by three different continents, Cyprus’ picture-postcard views and year-round sunshine appeal to Western Europeans and the coasts are lined with luxury resorts catering for summer stays and wedding packages. English couples are the current number one nationality marrying in Cyprus, with Russian and German second and third respectively. Limassol is clearly geared towards this influx of tourists, and we had a taste of

the city in arguably the best resort it has to offer, the independently owned and operated Four Seasons Hotel. The luxurious 5-star hotel is a spectacular sight, both inside and out, and boasts boutique sea views and private pool rooms as well as six restaurants, the Shiseido Spa and its own private beach. Though Cyprus’ appeal to tourists lies in its warm weather and sandy beaches, it would be a crime to miss the myriad historical and architectural sites that offer a different side to the country and don’t require long car journeys to visit. Having been under the influence of multiple cultures and with a history of diverse ownership (including us Brits - UK plug sockets and driving on the left side of the road being some of the remaining byproducts of our occupation) I wondered if Cyprus perhaps struggled to find - and assert - an identity of its own. Historical hot-spots are littered all over

FOUR SEASONS CAFÉ TROPICAL

LIMASSOL

the country and the ruins in the ancient city of Kourion, on the south west coast are particularly impressive. Highlights include a grand - and fully functional - amphitheatre and Roman baths with their intricate mosaic floors still intact. Churches, both Greek Orthodox and Christian, are aplenty, and the stunning World Heritage listed churches of the Byzantine era located in the Troodos region are not to be missed. However, these are all results of Cyprus’ various cultural influences. What is uniquely Cypriot? The answer lies in the island itself; its abundant pure and natural beauty. Our guides and the locals we encountered were all remarkably proud of their little country, happy to crack open fresh pomegranates from trees and point out growing olives and native herbs. Their only indigenous animal, the mouflon (a type of goat), is the emblem of Cyprus Airways and appears on their 5 cent Euro coin.

The Akamas Peninsula on the west of the Island is one of the best places to take in this unspoiled environment. It is here that you will find remnants of Cyprus’ most famous goddess, Aphrodite. ‘Petra Tou Romiou’ (Aphrodite’s Rock) is a popular beauty spot steeped in superstition; it doesn’t take much for a local to engage you in her legend and the stories of her many lovers. Her baths, located near Polis on the north west tip of the island, are set in a stunning nature trail in the Akamas Peninsula National Park, completely separated - and only a short drive from - the built-up towns and resorts. This is the beauty of Cyprus; aided by a car or coach, you can literally go from sunbathing on the beach to braving the chilly climate of the Troodos Mountains in under an hour. Cyprus’ wildlife and splendour is abundant throughout the year; green turtles come to lay their eggs on Lara Bay in the summer, winter months are still sunny and tepid, and the sea stays warm all year round compared to neighbouring islands. It is spring, however, that the natives recommend to visit. It feels like unearthing a local secret; spring is the season when the island is at its most spectacular, covered in wild flowers. The weather is perfectly hot and sunny whilst being mercifully some degrees shy of the sweltering temperatures come summer. Cyprus may be the perfect destination for sun, sea and sand, but it’s when you’re away from the crowded beaches, lost in its abundant natural beauty, that the country’s motto, “Cyprus in your heart” really resonates, and Cyprus as a unique destination comes into its own.

A stay at the Four Seasons starts from £113 (€135) in the winter season and £260 (€310) in summer. Rates are per room per night and include full buffet breakfast, service charge and all applicable taxes. fourseasons.com.cy

he Princess of Shoreditch is owned by Scott Hunter and Maria Larsen who spent a year looking for the perfect pub before finding The Princess of Shoreditch. The couple bought the pub in October 2008 and the aim is to provide the best pub in the area with a combination of great food and drink, value for money and warm friendly service. With experience in Michelin starred restaurants, cocktail bars and wine bars, their ambition is to combine standards found in top end establishments while keeping the informality of a local pub.

LOCAL FOCUS

CLOSE UP with Kirsty Valentine at The Alma, Newington Green How did you come to be landlady of The Alma? I’m from New Zealand originally and I’ve been here about 18 years. I spent a while writing a business plan and realised that I wanted a job where I could take time off to pusue hobbies, such as cycling. However, I also wanted a job that would stimulate me and keep me busy. What were your main aims in terms of atmosphere and spirit with the pub? A good pub should be a reflection of your community. Lots of pubs tend to go down one ‘gastro-pub’ path and I think that can become quite bland. We are just trying to introduce people to new things, I make lots of contacts and love using the best of British produce. This country is amazing for supporting local producers. Do you spend a lot of time sourcing local producers and products? Yes, I worked with a lady from Drink Britain and she gave me the details of some really good cider producers in Hereford. The same thing happened with our recent Scottish event for Burns night. Someone put me in touch with a website who publicise Scottish producers, I love getting small independent operators involved as much as I can. I’ve made contact this year with someone who has an estate and she has a deer stalker. They are going to get us some deer that they have stalked and hung. I also go foraging myself. What do you forage for? All sorts, especially Sloe berries. I go with my dog Tatiana to the Filter

You are also a member of the Newington Green Traders Association. What sort of work does this involve? I founded it and at the moment I am secretary. I was approached by the Council to see if there was any interest in setting it up and there was. We operate to try and improve the area for residents and visitors. Now I am a part of it I get the chance to meet other groups in our community and actually have a dialogue with them so that we can work together. Before, I didn’t really have any idea what other local businesses were doing in the area.

Beds and secret locations, we use two noses rather than one. We produce our own Sloe Gin at Christmas time and we package it all up with rustic labels and sell it. Can you tell me a bit about the special New Zealand tuck shop? The tuck shop happened because I have a thing for Watties Tomato Sauce which you buy in New Zealand. I was getting it sent over anytime a family member or friend came to visit. I thought, if I want it surely other people will too, so I bought over ten different products, to test the water. Now it’s just taken off and I sell about thirty different lines and I have to bulk order to quite a degree.

What are the Association working on at the moment? We work with the Newington Green Action group and are about to launch a radio link scheme, where a number of traders have agreed to use a radio that we can use to immediately talk to one another and the police. We want to show the local residents that we are serious about their safety and security. What do you like about the local area? I love the fact that I feel like I’m living in a village, in a small community, but within a massive city. I like tapping into both.

INSPIRATIONS Pub ethos a sustainable green approach, we have about 15 different recycling operations at The Alma Favourite book Harry Potter or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Favourite tipple I love a hot chocolate with a shot of amaretto Favourite holiday destination A hot beach anywhere! Most treasured possession Tatiana, my seven and a half year old Rhodesian Ridgeback

Luxury hotelier and property giant André Balazs is also due to open his very first London hotel in an old fire station on the same street; a perfect fellow French neighbour. The unique store space has been

decorated with expert attention to detail to echo a traditional Parisian perfumery as well as the fascinating story behind the brand. Established in 1643 by Claude Trudon, Cire Trudon were providers to Louis XIV’s French royal court, as well as to cathedrals and churches throughout the country. The brand’s decadent and unusual fragrances are a world apart from standard scented candles and are all 100% paraffin-free. Each display candle is housed in a delicate cloister dome and, when sniffed, the complex aromas encompass a plethora of scents. Each

has a specific background story or ‘vision’; inspired by everything from Dadaism to the Gardens of Versailles and Louis XIV’s many mistresses. Along with their candles and room sprays are the opulent Marie Antoinette and Napoleon busts which have been so prominent in design magazines over the past year. Towards the back of the store, a separate room houses the exclusive collection of Fornasetti candles and incense holders; each one typically surreal and tongue-in-cheek. The reception has been fantastic and it would seem that with their new home, Cire Trudon are enjoying the sweet smell of success in London. ciretrudon.com

MARKET INSIGHT Laurence Brown, Director of WHERE NEXT

T

here’s no escaping the fact that 2011 was a difficult year – with an uncertain future, businesses and individuals alike have had to find new solutions to new challenges. As the recession began to bite hard, larger, corporate property agents struggled to adjust to a postboom economy, their attitudes fixed in the faceless ‘pile-em-high, sell-them-quick’ mentality of the previous decades. Here at WHERE NEXT, we decided that a changed marketplace demanded a fresh approach to business; a stripped down, no-frills approach where the customers’ needs were more important than maintaining a fleet of liveried cars or an in-store coffee bar. 2011 saw WHERE NEXT’s first full year of trading after devising our unique and personalised sales strategy in the summer of 2010 and while bigger companies have struggled, WHERE NEXT have thrived despite a challenging marketplace. We owe our success to one simple formula – putting the customer first, treating each client as a unique individual and tailoring our strategy according to their needs. Whether you’re selling, letting, renting or buying, whether the property is residential or commercial, at WHERE NEXT we always take the time to go that extra mile for our customers because with a small, dedicated and experienced workforce, you’re always dealing with another human being, not a corporation. The coming year promises to be just as eventful, but here at WHERE NEXT we’re looking forward to the challenge. With the government waiving stamp duty for first time buyers up to the value of £250,000 until March, and forecasts suggesting a stabilising property market, we’re confident that our unique brand of service is the right choice for you, whatever your property needs. Our streamlined, bespoke organisation means that we can provide a flexible, personally tailored service, but we can also react and respond quickly not only to changes in those needs, but also to widerreaching market-forces. It’s a New Year and it’s time for a new, contemporary approach to the housing market. If you’re looking at your property and thinking ‘where next?’, choose WHERE NEXT in 2012. Wherenext Islington Ltd have proudly chosen to support The Teenage Cancer Trust as its nominated charity (registered charity no. 1062559). As part of our support, Where Next will donate a percentage of each transaction to The Teenage Cancer Trust. 020 3176 4150 www.wherenextislington.co.uk 83 83

THE ISLINGTON COMPANY OFFICE LAUNCH PARTY

The Isington Company recently launched a brand new office on Essex Road, with a vision to serve as a hub for property professionals. The office launch reception was held last month and was a resounding success, with a host of local business owners joining in with the celebrations. theislingtoncompany.co.uk, 020 3589 0127

New figures from the Stoke Newington Church Street branch of one of London’s leading independent boutique estate agents show sales were up 38% – fuelled by a 46% rise in valuations and a 50% rise in instructions on the same time last year. What’s more, of those instructions, just over a quarter of the properties went onto to be sold by the six strong team before they were actually marketed – such is the level of demand among applicants to live in the Stoke Newington area. Says Laarni Tharby, Branch Partner for Felicity J Lord Stoke Newington: “We were expecting a strong start to 2012 given the level of interest in the area from applicants during the last few months of 2011. “But even we’ve been taken aback by the sheer volume of demand. This is seen in the number of properties that have been bought in the first weeks of this year without us having a chance to begin marketing them.” “This is fantastic news for the vendors, especially when you consider that they are being sold either for or above their asking price, and a huge incentive for anyone in the Stoke Newington area considering putting their home on the market in the near market.” Felicity J Lord, 020 7923 0158 www.fjlord.co.uk

ANDREW FLINT FROM COLMAN COYLE, GIVES HIS EXPERT ADVICE ON ALL YOUR LEGAL PROPERTY QUESTIONS I would like to take up the carpets in my flat and have bare floor boards. A friend of mine says I might not be able to do this. Can you advise me? Whether you can do this or not will depend on the terms of your lease. Most leases do include a regulation that states that you must keep all of the floors carpeted (except kitchen and bathroom usually). This is to avoid noise transmission between flats in the block. This is usually more of an issue in older converted properties where sound insulation may not be so good. More up to date leases tend to be a bit more flexible reflecting the fashion for alternative types of flooring. Therefore, a lease might state that you have to keep the floors carpeted or covered with other material that will keep noise transmission down to a minimum. This could therefore leave the lessee able to put new wooden flooring down provided there is adequate insulation. If you go ahead and remove your carpets and your lease does contain a restriction against this, then your fellow lessees may contact the freeholder to request that the terms of the lease are enforced. Alternatively, they may contact the Council who, if satisfied that the noise transmission is unacceptable, might serve you with a Notice ordering you to put carpets or other such suitable flooring down.

Your initial mortgage consultation is obligation free. There will be a minimum fee for our mortgage service of £450, of which £150 is payable when you apply, and we will retain the commission from the mortgage lender. Alternatively, you can choose the fee only option which is typically 0.65% of the amount borrowed. The precise amount will depend on your circumstances and mortgage loan amount, and will be discussed and agreed before you make a mortgage application.

Royle Building, 31 Wenlock Road N1 7SH

£895 per week

A unique duplex penthouse apartment decorated, styled and furnished by the renowned architect and designer Yasmine Mahmoudieh. Over 1100 sqft of accommodation is arranged over 2 floors in this converted building that was formerly home to the Royle Printing Company. Both bedrooms are galleried over the double height reception and dining area and enjoy far reaching views westwards over the London rooftops. The most impressive space is the reception and dining room thanks to floor to ceiling windows providing natural light and an open and airy feel. These windows open on to a substantial balcony which overlooks Wenlock Basin on the Regent’s Canal. The master bedroom has a glass tiled en-suite bathroom and there is a further shower room. The property benefits from parking and a concierge service, and thanks to the vision and creative skill of its owner is a real one off. Wenlock Road is situated between Shoreditch and Angel with easy access to Islington’s Upper Street, Clerkenwell, and the City. Transport links are excellent with Old Street station nearby providing both Underground and National Rail services.
