We made the most of the fine sunshine and took our lovely models for a walk on the wild side at Camley Street Natural Park. It’s always nice to have your eyes constantly refreshed and discover new and adventurous places in the area, and this particular park - a blink-and-you’llmiss-it nature reserve down by Regent’s Canal – is a wonderful green oasis right in the middle of the King’s Cross redevelopment. This month I had the pleasure of reviewing Islington’s only certified organic pub The Duke of Cambridge (p38), which I cannot recommend to you too highly for dinner or Sunday lunch. I also had the chance to catch up with pop sensation Eliza Doolittle for our lead interview (p13).

WHAT’S ON THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED) RUNNING THROUGHOUT MAY

EDITOR’S PICK

London’s longest running comedy comes to the capital’s newest venue in this completely new production, as three performers hurtle through all 37 Shakespeare plays in under 2 hours, with some sonnets thrown in for good measure! A mad romp through the Shakespearean canon as you have never seen before, complete with Titus Andronicus reimagined as Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word, all of the history plays as a rugby match, a hiphop Othello, and the world’s shortest performance of Hamlet, at just 43 seconds long. Irreverent foolery at breakneck speeds with this record-breaking comedy. The New Red Lion, 271-273 City Road, EC1V 1LA, redliontheatres.co.uk/new-red-lion, 08444 771 000

YOHJI MAKING WAVES RUNNING UNTIL 14TH JULY

The Wapping Hydraulic Power Station pumped out its final volt in 1977 and lay dormant for 23 years, until it was renovated by the Woman’s Playhouse Trust. Since it’s opening in 2000 it has maintained the status of a completely unique and original art space, showcasing performances, live events, visual arts and even belly-filling pieces (in the restaurant attached). Open late six nights a week, the project has inspired similar developments across the globe and is an all-round fantastic venue to view art. May sees the space hosting an exhibition exploring the creative genius of Yohji Yamamoto.

An exhibition of hitherto unseen paintings and drawings at L-13, this selection of work by Pete Bennett and Jeannine Guidi is curated by Billy Childish. Pete Bennett, currently living in Hackney, London and Jeannine Guidi living in New York, have both created significant bodies of work over the last decades but have rarely shown work through the normal channels of exhibition and commerce. Both artists have a healthy suspicion of the art world’s dogma and cliques, combined with a fierce sense of the sanctity of their own chosen creative paths. LOCAL FOCUS COMEDY STAR HAS ALL THE ANSWERS

Comedian Charlie Higson raised awareness when he chaired a quiz for young people in Islington. The Fast Show star agreed to host Islington’s Young Consumer Of The Year for the second time running; organised by the council’s Trading Standards team as part of a UK-wide contest. The fast-paced University Challenge style quiz was won by Central Foundation School, along with runners up St. Aloysius RC College who both attended the London final on March 24.Cllr Barbara Sidnell, Islington Council’s executive member for community safety, said: “This was a chance for young people to show just how much they knew, and learn some extra facts. Thanks again to Charlie Higson for giving up his time, and congratulations to the winners and all who took part.”

LOCAL NEWS A round-up of what Islington Council is doing for the borough…

SOTHEBY MEWS SAVED! A day centre threatened by cuts has been saved due to the co-operation of Islington Council, Age Concern Islington and Highbury Roundhouse. The council had proposed to close Sotheheby Mews Day Centre and its lunch club as a response to the governments £40 million cuts. The council heard from a variety of service users who valued the activities and their time spent at the centre. From the beginning of last month, the Highbury Roundhouse lunch clubs joined Sotheby Mews, providing hot meals for three to four days of the week including appropriate meals for Turkish and Asian elders. Cllr Janet Burgess, Executive Member for Adult Social Care, Islington Council said: “It’s been hard work but we have done it - Sotheby Mews is saved! We are on the residents’ side so it broke my heart to hear the depth and speed of the government cuts. Sotheby Mews users told us they wanted us to keep a service going there and it’s a lifeline for some.

GILLESPIE SCHOOL IS PRAISED BY OFSTED Islington’s Gillespie Primary School has been rated as ‘outstanding’ in nearly every category by Ofsted Inspectors. The school was described in the Ofsted report as being ‘inspirational for pupils and all members of the school community.’ Alongside the standard lessons, all pupils in years 4, 5 and 6 also learn the violin or cello. Inspectors noted that there were equally impressive opportunities for pupils to participate in a wide range of sports and other activities including a variety of

after school clubs. As a result of ‘strong care, guidance and support’ pupils at Gillespie School are responsible and their behaviour is ‘excellent.’ Many pupils enjoy playing a role in the school council whilst buddies and monitors carry out their responsibilities maturely and demonstrate that strong school leadership is shared with pupils.Headteacher, Mark Owen, said: “I am delighted for my staff, governors and parents who all deserve praise for working so enthusiastically to improve our school for our wonderful Gillespie children.”

ELIZA DOES... A LOT!

INTERVIEW

HelenÊ Baron finds out what makes north London pop sensation Eliza Doolittle tick

I

t’s a surprisingly common characteristic among musicians – just because they perform for a living, doesn’t mean they want to talk about it all the time. The impression I get when speaking to Eliza is that, really, she’d rather be making music than doing promo. It’s not that she’s impolite – far from it – but she transmits that sort of nervous hesitancy that betrays what I assume to be a desire to get back to her true love – writing and singing songs. It’s actually a charming attribute in one so young, and so new to the pop game. Rewind to just over a year ago and Eliza Doolittle was relatively unknown, but the last few months have seen her rise to a level of success a record label can only dream about nowadays. Her debut album soared to number three in the UK charts and has since spawned two top 25 hits and two singles which debuted in the top five UK singles chart. I ask her if it seems sudden or surreal? “Well, I’ve been writing for quite some time now, so its not like I’m new to the industry - but the past few months have been amazing.” I bet they have. The retro refrain and quirky charm of single Pack Up (sung by Lloyd Wade) have seen it garner massive radio and TV play, including soundtracking a recent Kinder Surprise advert. Did Eliza set out to make a tune with an old-time feel? “Lloyd Wade’s a friend; it’s great that he sings on the track and I guess that song took form because of the tonality of his voice. I guess there wasn’t too much thinking behind the concept of the first album, but my songs do tend to be happy and colourful which does reflect my mood and image at the moment.” Speaking of retro, I’m reminded that Eliza is continuing the tradition of British female singer-songwriters started by Amy Winehouse and Duffy as well as fellow north Londoners Lily Allen and Kate Nash. I wonder what she thinks of her predecessors, though (understandably) she seems a little uncomfortable with any kind of artistic comparison. “I don’t really listen to them…” she trails off, so I change the question, asking which female artist is dearest to her? “Aretha Franklin,” is the answer, and then, “Carole King”. Perhaps Eliza is concerned about being pigeon-holed or pinned 13

SPOTLIGHT

Exhibition Spotlight

A DESIGN FOR LIFE Following its astoundingly successful launch in 2010, Eloise Baumann previews the second annual Clerkenwell Design Week

I

t may surprise you to discover that, until 2010, Clerkenwell didn’t have a large-scale annual exhibition and showcase for all things design-related – after all, the area is home to many of the world’s leading lights in all aspects of design, from graphic design and new media agencies to interiors specialists and architecture practices. In fact, there are more architecture firms per square mile in Clerkenwell than anywhere else in the world: over 200 at the last count. Clerkenwell’s past provides one explanation of why the area has become a favourite home of the design community, its history being thick with design associations. Printers, book-binders and jewellers were among the many skilled professions attracted to the area over the centuries, taking advantage of the desirable location – just outside the

bounds of the Square Mile (and outside the reach of the controlling City guilds) but still close to London’s bustling heart. In the latter half of the twentieth century, Clerkenwell welcomed a new influx of creative businesses seeking a central location without West End or City rents. The rents may have risen since then, but the designers have remained. Now the area is home to over 60 major showrooms and any number of creative agencies. Big international players like Vitra, Toto, Poltrona Frau and Moroso ensure Clerkenwell remains a Mecca for those seeking the best in interior design and high end furnishing, while the area’s number and variety of professional graphics and architecture studios seems to be constantly on the up. So it’s no surprise that when companies

Mix 10 and Mix Media conceived of a yearly celebration of the ‘creative richness and social impact’ of design, they saw Clerkenwell as the perfect location. And they’ve won the support of some very big guns to make sure this year’s event is even bigger and better than the last – most notably in the form of their official sponsor, classic British brand and originator of some of the most iconic car designs of the last century, Jaguar. The inaugural 2010 Clerkenwell Design Week drew 18,000 registered visitors to the area for a three-day bonanza of exhibitions, installations, debates, displays, workshops and even street parties. This year the organisers expect an even bigger attendance, as a huge number of creatives both international and homegrown gather

to showcase some of the world’s most exciting new contemporary design. The event will be taking over venues including the Farmiloe Building, an ex-Victorian glass factory, and the incredible ‘House of Detention’, an underground Victorian prison that’s usually not open to the public. Unique and exciting spaces fit for a unique and exciting event – and one that you’d be well advised to attend, whether you’re a design professional or just after the latest and greatest in interiors ideas. Clerkenwell DesignWeek runs May 24-26. Full details are available at clerkenwelldesignweek.com

HOUSE OF DETENTION

A TASTE OF ITALY

Another coup for Clerkenwell Design Week 2011 is that it will bring the best of Milan’s world-famous Salone Furniture Fair to London, allowing visitors to see many of the products and interiors ideas unveiled in Italy this April months ahead of their official UK launches. Some of the designers and products that will be making the trip from Milan include Nigel Coates, showing his new lighting range for Italian manufacturer Slamp, Charlotte Perriand’s new ‘TOKYO’ chaise longue, and Lievore Altherr Molina’s Woody chair for manufacturer Andreu World. 17

TRAVEL LOG:

BIG COUNTRY Intrepid Travel’s Robin Wild travelled to Western Australia and discovered that big is definitely beautiful.

“W

estern Australia is a big place, and I mean really big. It’s Australia’s largest state, occupying the entire western third of the country and in it, you could fit around 58 Englands. I have friends from WA who have stations (farms) which are the size of Switzerland, where they have light aeroplanes to herd cattle. For a girl from Hackney this kind of ‘big’ is almost impossible to imagine. You find out quickly that things run differently out in WA. In fact the locals will tell you that WA actually stands for “Wait Awhile”. This is a place where you can swim out from the shore to Ningaloo Reef and snorkel with sharks and turtles. It’s a place where wild dolphins swim up to 8/4/08 the shallow waters of Monkey Mia to be fed by hand. In WA you can explore the bizarre black and orange striped domes of a mountain range called the Bungle Bungles (pictured right)- such a happy wonderful word that they had to use it twice! You can sit around a camp fire and talk late into the night, drinking local wine bought from one of the many vineyards down on the Margaret River and then fall asleep in a Swag under a canopy of stars. There is nothing quite like being woken up by the sun rising over the horizon, feeling the earth warming and waking up underneath you, and knowing that this is the real Australia.”

6:04:46 pm

Robin travelled on Intrepid’s 11-day West Coast Safari from Broome to Perth, costing £1185 (excluding international flights.) Throughout May, Intrepid Islington are offering a cash bonus of up to £150 when you book an Intrepid Australia or New Zealand trip departing before the end of the year. WHATÕ S NOT

FEET FIRST

MrÊ RohitÊ MadhavÊ fromÊ TheÊ LondonÊ OrthopaedicÊ ClinicÊ givesÊ hisÊ expertÊ advice

I have just bought some gorgeous strappy sandals for the summer – the only things stopping me from wearing them are my unsightly bunions. Apart from looking horrible they’re quite painful and always cause blisters. Is there anything I can do before the summer to get rid of them? Unfortunately there is no quick remedy for bunions. The pain can be helped with the use of anti-inflammatory ointments; they are usually less painful in the summer months when people wear open footwear. It is advisable to get a professional opinion from an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery as there are several causes for bunions and they can require professional treatment. I’ve just booked a holiday and I’m really looking forward to a week of sightseeing but I’ve been suffering from a pain in the balls of my feet when walking. I’m really worried it’s going to ruin my week away. What is causing the pain and is there a way to treat it? Pain in the balls of the feet or metatarsalgia can occur for many reasons. Provided the foot shape and joints are reasonably well aligned the usual cause is sudden overactivity in unsupportive or poor footwear. I would recommend a programme of stretching exercises for the hamstring calf muscles and arch muscles along with supportive footwear. If shoes need to be open then cushioned, firm soles with reasonable straps to hold the foot in are advisable; some good brands are FitFlops and Birkenstocks. If closed footwear is appropriate then good quality trainers or formal walking shoes will help avoid unnecessary pain. One of my toes is really red and painful. I think I’ve got an ingrowing toenail but I don’t know what to do and I’m worried it will get infected. What is the best treatment for this? I want to be able to play with my children during the summer holidays so I don’t want to be in pain or still recovering from surgery. Painful red toes are best treated by a professional. It would be advisable to go and see a chiropodist in the first instance to see if there is a simple nail problem which can be remedied without resorting to surgery and allowing the pain and redness to settle. Unfortunately, sometimes you do have to resort to surgery but it’s reasonably minor and recovery is quick - normally within 7-10 days. VIRTUAL REALITY

T

MostÊ dietsÊ eitherÊ donÕ tÊ workÊ orÊ donÕ tÊ last,Ê butÊ theÊ VirtualÊ GastricÊ BandÊ confrontsÊ theÊ reasonsÊ whyÊ weÊ eatÊ theÊ wayÊ weÊ do.

he word ‘diet’ originally means “manner of living” or “way of life” in Greek. So a true diet has absolutely nothing to do with the short-term attempt of denying yourself food to lose ‘a bit of weight’. The Hypnotherapeutic approach of the Virtual Gastric Band Surgery deals with the reasons you become overweight and teaching you that food is not your enemy, but a friend. The treatment itself consists of four or five sessions that use behavioural therapy as well as Hypnosis. It promises to change your entire attitude to food, giving you a new and permanently healthy way of living. Not only will it help you to maintain your ideal weight, but will encourage the knock-on effect of boosting confidence and self-esteem. Becoming healthier can prevent many diseases and for some people, loosing weight can reverse symptoms thereby avoiding surgery altogether. Surgical interventions such as the use of the gastric band have been shown to result in improvements in quality of life and weight loss but surgeries carry risks. The Virtual Gastric Band offers an alternative and is more likely to be effective in the long run.

Designed for people who fi nd it difficult to lose weight on their own, the Virtual Gastric Band surgery is tailored to each individual tapping into their conscious and unconscious mind to maximise benefit without the need for surgery. Get your Virtual Gastric band fitted and be on your way to a healthier lifestyle. Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê OnÊ tOÊ aÊ Ê GOOdÊ thinGÊ The Duke of CambriDge

HelenÊ Baron samples the flavours of London’s first ever ‘officially organic’ pub...

T

he Duke of Cambridge scored major brownie points with me before I’d even crossed the threshold (though it’s only fair to say I didn’t try the brownies; I’m sure they’d have fared extremely well). The reason for such advance admiration? Well, The Duke of Cambridge is not quite your average pub. In fact, this relative newcomer to the Islington drinking-anddining scene is the first and only certifiably organic pub in London. An astonishing fact, when you consider the sheer amount of air-time given to buzzwords like ‘organic’ these days; and – as someone interested in environmental issues and a supporter of various eco initiatives – enough to get me very excited indeed. The pub’s modus operandi is to serve only sustainable, seasonal, locally produced food, and to uphold a ‘sustainable fishing’ policy. The menu focuses on predominantly British fare and incorporates Mediterranean influences – but that doesn’t mean your

greens come complete with their own colossal carbon footprint: The Duke of Cambridge sources 80% of all its fresh ingredients from the home counties. Moreover, all their ingredients are certified organic by the Soil Association – and their provenance is traceable as a result. Menus change twice daily, according to what’s at peak freshness and therefore most flavoursome, and all the food is made on-site, including breads, pickles and ice-creams. But here’s where they’re onto a real winner in my opinion: there are always two meat, two fish and two vegetarian main courses on the menu. Traditional restaurateurs take heed: this is the way of the future, so don’t remain stuck in the past! As a long-term vegetarian who has recently started eating fish again – largely due to the sheer lack of variety in vegetarian cooking when out and about – I’m thrilled to see this ‘equal opportunities’ attitude to menu design. Never again need I pay for a full Sunday

roast while receiving just a parched plate of veg and (if I’m lucky) a Yorkshire pudding; and I don’t have to accept the seemingly obligatory (bland) mushroom risotto while my carnivorous companions take their pick from dozens of possible platters. Instead I can hop down to The Duke of Cambridge and choose something carefully tailored to my tastes. Just because I’m a pescatarian, doesn’t mean I’m not a dedicated foodie, and with the arrival of The Duke of Cambridge, I’m beginning to hope my tomato pasta days are over! The ConCepT Geetie Singh founded Sloeberry Trading in order to open and run The Duke of Cambridge. Having already gained extensive experience in the restaurant trade and wanting to do something about the appalling amount of wastefulness she’d witnessed, Geetie was determined to put her interest in social justice and her passion for nature to good use. Starting an environmentally friendly business

28/04/2011 23:50

FOOD &DRINK

seemed a great way to do so, and The Duke of Cambridge was the perfect way to support organic farming, sustainable living and healthy eating – but it was equally important to Geetie that her pub deliver top quality food to diners. As a result, the chefs at the pub (bless ‘em) buy goods direct from small independent farms. They also ensure that no food is wasted and source as much Fair Trade produce as possible – tea, sugar, coffee and chocolate comes from small producers who are paid a fair and decent premium for their crops. The chefs also adhere to a strict fish-buying policy (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall would be proud) and try to avoid packaged, processed foods – for this reason, you won’t see the usual crisps behind the bar, though you can happily munch your way through delicious olives and nuts. Geetie, who had lived in a commune in the Midlands, says the idea for The Duke of Cambridge came about because she had grown “deeply disillusioned with the lack of sustainability in restaurants”. She clearly doesn’t do things by halves, refusing to be branded as “just an environmentalist” or “just a restaurateur”: she is both in equal measure, and certainly her employment of radical methods (as far as the restaurant business is concerned) proves her to be a shining example of both ethical activist and savvy businesswoman. One visit to The Duke of Cambridge makes it plain: the pub really goes that extra mile, proudly recycling and reusing building materials, furniture and kitchen waste while keeping a vigilant eye on energy use. In addition, it fosters links with local residents, training cooks at nearby schools as well as staff for a forthcoming community kitchen (Jamie Oliver would be proud – or jealous!) And as if all that was not enough, Geetie insists on advocating certification

ONE VISIT TO THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE MAKES IT PLAIN: THE PUB REALLY GOES THAT EXTRA MILE, PROUDLY RECYCLING AND REUSING BUILDING MATERIALS, FURNITURE AND KITCHEN WASTE WHILE KEEPING A VIGILANT EYE ON ENERGY USE policies, making the point that catering companies are legally exempt and able to regulate themselves, thus compromising the integrity of the organic movement. The Duke of Cambridge is certified organic despite not needing to be so. That kind of commitment to a better future is a rare thing indeed. THE TASTE TEST So the eco-conscious ethos is undeniably admirable… but would the food live up to all the good intentions? Well, the dining experience certainly started well: the pub has a friendly, buzzy atmosphere and stylish agrarian-inspired décor. Happily, the pastoral goodness and human touch extended to the food. I started with Alham Woods English mozzarella with mushroom, sundried tomato and walnut pesto; continued with a main course of potato, cauliflower, tomato, spinach and lentil curry (accompanied by a chilli gherkin salad), and ended with chocolate and almond cake with crème fraiche. My dining partner, who chose a starter of pan-fried scallops and cauliflower purée; a main of three-cheese soufflé in a white wine sauce and beetroot salad, and a lemon pot with crème fraiche and prunes for dessert, summed the experience up neatly when he said that the most impressive thing about the food was how perfectly it combined the wholesome and the refined – an achievement rarely seen in top restaurants, let alone a local

organic pub. His stand-out flavours were the soufflé and beetroot. Mine were the mozzarella (creamy beyond belief!) and the garnishes – the tomatoes tasted as if they’d been plucked from the vine just moments before; the chillis and gherkins divulged a freshness that seemed to burst out into the mouth. It was as if these time-honoured and familiar ingredients were suddenly made new to us – and that shows genius at work. If The Duke of Cambridge was conceived to show that a better future is possible without scrimping on pleasure or quality along the way, then Geetie Singh can give herself a pat on the back: mission well and truly accomplished.  WHAT MAKES IT ORGANIC? Organic farming works in harmony with the land, without the use of chemicals, respecting the environment and its animals, developing fertile soil and nurturing insect and animal life to naturally deter crop pests. Crops are rotated to maintain healthy soil and animals are reared without the routine use of antibiotics and according to a high standard of animal welfare – as certified by the Soil Association. RESTAURANT REVIEW: XO, BELSIZE PARK, NW3

XTRO

SPECIAL AdamÊ CoghlanÊ visitsÊ contemporaryÊ PanasianÊ eatery,Ê XO

I

will first of all make an admission and concede that I had my reservations about XO: a very pristinely kitted-out red/black/ stainless steel affair in leafy north London suburbia serving food best described, notwithstanding Sticky Toffee Pudding and friends for desert, as Asiatic. There is no disputing the natural pleasure in arriving somewhere like Belsize village on a balmy spring evening to the European setting of sophisticates smoking and drinking on pavement terraces. I however, felt that the online proclamation: a ‘stylish contemporary restaurant and bar, serving exceptional pan-Asian food [and] bringing West End quality closer to home’ and photographs of bar stools resembling reconstituted shopping baskets on legs smacked of an overconfidence and an emphasis on style over substance. As is often the case when personal prejudice clouds objective openmindedness, I was immediately surprised and pleased to be served an exceptional pint of Asahi lager. It sounds like a small thing, but beer is too often poorly kept; here it was as clean as a whistle and came in a chilled glass which took it to an even higher plain of refreshment. To further surprise, where usually in such venues the faint murmur of lounge jazz sterilises any potential atmosphere, here there was a decent buzz and a sense of calm that comes with the presence of competent and well-trained staff. This would prove no illusion. After enjoying the pre-dinner pints in the bar, we made our way into the

dining room. Although the restaurant wasn’t full it was easy to forget that this was a Monday night; it seems to be a popular haunt for the more discerning, if style-conscious, residents in the neighbourhood. It came as little surprise that within a few minutes of sitting down, a celebrity had turned up for dinner. By the time our main courses had arrived, there were no free tables and I can conclude that this because the food here is excellent. It is difficult to get steamed and salted edamame beans wrong, but paired with a piquant chilli soy and mirin dip, they were a wonder: a perfect pre-starter. Equally good was a remarkably light chilli salt quid – an Asian version of deep-fried calamari. Where a mixed plate of sushi and sashimi (thick pieces of fresh salmon and tuna, crab rolls) was good, dim sum of chicken sui mai with chilli jam was a carnival of flavours beneath the bite. The flavour profile was so complex that to regurgitate it here would be futile. Instead, I would recommend that you try them yourself – an assault (in a good way) on the tastebuds. Such was their brilliance, it wasn’t before the starters had been cleared, another round of drinks had arrived and the main courses were in front of us, that my friend Jack and I stopped lauding the sui mai. Thereafter, the main courses served only to confirm what the starters had just told us: that the kitchen here knows

exactly what they are doing. A king prawn phad thai was very good. The sweet umami-rich sticky noodles offset by a balanced range of flavours and textures – broken peanuts, beansprouts freshened by a squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkling of coriander. Even better was a perfectly cooked dish of steamed sea bass with black bean. The delicacy and finely judged acidity of the sauce provided a lovely, if unusual match for the subtle fish. With it we had sides of jasmine rice and a plate of bok choi with shaoxing and ginger. Both were good- the latter a sharp and lively foil to the phad thai. To finish we each had a selection of sorbets, not merely because they were the least strange option. A list that includes a group of British menuimposters probably demonstrates little more than an awareness of the wants of the clientele. Like with everything else they do – rows of comfortable banqueted-booths suit a clean and smart décor; the service astute and attentive – XO indicated an assured sense of self-identity. The sorbets, particularly a tart blackcurrant one, were wonderful. With that, their confidence had been vindicated and I left with a further (as if I needed it) reaffirmation of their allround competency.  29 Belsize Lane, NW3 5AS 020 7433 0888 rickerrestaurants.com/xo

...a modern local... PUBLIC HOUSE is a modern local tucked away just off Upper Street in Islington comprising a modern british restaurant and fancy cocktail lounge specialising in seasonal british food and classic cocktails with a thoughtful twist. We have come up with something slightly different but based on simple, age-old ideas. A bar & restaurant in Islington where the hosts know your name just like in the community based public houses of a bygone day, but where the service, food & drink are up to the standards of today’s discerning consumer.

PUBLIC HOUSE MAY OFFERS: 2 courses & a glass of Prosecco for £17.50 (mon-sat) Sunday Roast & a Bloody Mary for £10

PUBLIC HOUSE is pretty...not in a statuesque model sense, rather like the kooky girl next door with something a little wonky about her person that just adds to her charm. The space is divided into a lounge/ bar area towards the front, with a restaurant area further back.

SPOTLIGHT

BEHIND THE SCENES:

LOVEÊ TOÊ LOVE WeÊ talkÊ toÊ localÊ DjingÊ duo,Ê LucieÊ andÊ Anna,Ê whoÊ tearÊ itÊ upÊ atÊ Ô LoveÊ toÊ LoveÕ Ê partiesÊ thisÊ sideÊ ofÊ theÊ river... getÊ yourÊ glad-ragsÊ on!Ê Ê TELL US ABOUT YOUR DJING PARTNERSHIP; HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? We started DJing together a few years ago. We’ve played fashion parties, festivals, events and various club nights as well as being residents at Smash ‘n’ Grab (at Punk in Soho). We then began throwing one off parties at both Shoreditch and Soho House which became notorious. We needed a bigger venue however, so we teamed up with Erika (who used to run the popular night, Easy Lover, also at Punk in Soho), Sophie Ellis Bextor and her husband, Richard Jones from the band, The Feeling, who used to run the night Modern Love. We’d all been talking about combining our parties for a while, then an opportunity at The Bath House in Liverpool Street came up for us to do a regular, bi-weekly Friday night and that’s when Love to Love was born. ANY FUNNY DJING STORIES TO SHARES WITH US? The funniest thing is probably our out-of-control dancing; Lucie tore the ligaments in her foot once after trying to re-create some Dirty Dancing moves.

L-R: ANNA, SOPHIE ELLIS BEXTOR, RICHARD JONES, LUCIE & ERIKA

HOW DID YOU GET INTO CLUB PROMOTION? It happened by accident really. When we first met, Lucie suggested to Anna they DJ together; for some reason it didn’t work out until a few years later. We both work in music, so we thought why not? WHEN DID YOU START THE CLUB NIGHT UP? WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT FROM THE CROWD? Love to Love was born in September 2010 at The Bath House. It’s a no holds barred party. We are ‘guilty pleasures’ through and through.. Our fi rst night had Nick Grimshaw, Henry Holland and The Midnight Beast as guest DJs. Sophie (Ellis Bextor) has also been known to sing a few covers, our favorite being Madonna’s Like A Virgin at the Valentine’s Masked Ball. I think the best night was our 90’s Christmas party; we had Tony Mortimor perform East 17’s greatest hits with a full band. Lucie cried when he sang Stay Another Day.

IS THERE A MUSIC POLICY? WHAT WOULD THE NIGHT’S TYPICAL PLAYLIST INCLUDE? The music policy is, if you know the words, we play it. It ranges from Millie’s My Boy Lollipop to Sinead O’Conner’s Nothing Compares, to Rhythm is a Dancer and all that comes in between. And yep, we do play Hanson. WHAT’S THE BEST BIT ABOUT RUNNING A CLUB NIGHT? It’s always good to see people coming to a guaranteed party, having a good night that you’ve put on for them; it makes you all warm and fuzzy. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE KEY TO RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL CLUB NIGHT IN LONDON? Keep it fun, always have new ideas, book good DJs / bands, play good music and always re-create the lift from Dirty Dancing. WHAT ARE YOUR PROMOTIONAL PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? ANY THEMES LINED UP? We recently left The Bath House, and are currently looking for a North London venue, so watch this space! But we are joining forces with the new Proud Galleries in Brighton, hosting a monthly Love to Love there. We threw the ‘unofficial’ Love to Love Royal Wedding Reception at The George in Whitechapel at the end of April. Love to Love will be launching their club night at Café De Paris (starting the 22nd April and every other Friday thereafter). clublovetolove.co.uk

WINNING Ê DESIGN WeÊ speakÊ toÊ LizzieÊ MaryÊ Cullen,Ê theÊ illustratorÊ andÊ LuluÊ Guinness,Ê theÊ accessoriesÊ designer,Ê bothÊ successfulÊ designÊ talentsÊ andÊ exhibitorsÊ atÊ ClerkenwellÊ DesignÊ Week

LIZZIEÊ MARYÊ CULLEN: How did you start illustrating and then graduate to design work? Going to Goldsmiths, and doing the Design BA helped a lot in developing my work process and concepts. I worked on Harry Potter 6 and helped out in the art department (which was incredible) and loved the idea of illustrating for a living. After graduating, I won a few awards including Association of Illustrators New Talent, and New Designers One Year On, which is when I was commissioned by restaurant chain, Zizzi, to help with their national rebrand. How would you describe your illustrating style? I work with urban environments to create psychogeographic explorations of public space. I think they’re successful on two levels - they’re not just pretty pictures as they’re driven by this situationist theme which guides my work, but they can also work as something nice to hang on the wall! How does it feel to be in Design Week Magazine’s 2011 Hot list?

Amazing! I didn’t see that one coming, but i’m very honoured to be included this year. How do you go about encapsulating the spirit of a place through illustration? I think the key thing is to take your time to explore a place. It’s something that I love about my research process; just going to a new place and getting lost for a few days is a very lovely experience. I’ve just come back from Spain where I went to draw the Ronda Bridge. It’s like something out of Lord of the Rings - really epic - and the town is beautiful, perfect for getting lost in. What campaigns have you worked on since you graduated; what have you enjoyed the most? I think the ZIzzi campaign has been a dream job - they’re fantastic clients, and really encourage the young designers who work for them. Working with Harry Potter’s Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) has been fun too - I do his

album artwork for his record label Six String Productions, which is great to be involved with. Harvey Nichols was a fantastic commission also, mostly because I got to work in the flagship store after hours - exciting! lizziemarycullen.com

Exhibition Spotlight

LULUÊ GUINNESS Your brand is a British institution now; how did the company start and what do you attribute to its great success? I didn’t take a conventional route, I started at Art College, went onto Video Production and then ended up designing handbags! I have always had a creative mind so it seemed natural for me to move into design even though I had no formal training.

I attribute Lulu Guinness’s success to the fact it does not follow fashion trends, but continues to be fashionforward with innovative desirable designs. The British heritage branding certainly appeals to our US and Japanese markets who love the refi ned British sense of style. What inspires you in daily life; where do you draw fresh ideas for your design work? I am inspired by everything and anything, vintage pieces, markets, travel, museum shops and I usually have my best ideas when I am in the bath, when I have time to think to myself. What do you love most about your job? I love what I do and my favourite aspect of my job is the fact that I am still lucky enough to be doing something I love after 21 years! I am also very lucky to have a great office team; they are like a second family to me. You’ve won numerous awards including The Independent Handbag Designer Award and the ICONOCLAST Award for Lifetime Achievement in Handbag Design – how does that feel? It feels wonderful; so nice that accessories are no longer the poor

relation at fashion awards, even though handbag designers have long been making an enormous commercial contribution to the industry as a whole. It is also great to feel part of a community. I like the idea that the Iconoclast Awards are for independent handbag designers, who are often overlooked without the massive advertising budgets of the luxury brands. I was also the 1st non-American to be awarded, so it is nice to know my brand has such recognition on the other side of the Atlantic. What are the plans for the brand going forward? We are very excited to be launching the first Lulu Guinness luggage and travel goods collection in August 2011. The collection will launch in Harrods, Knightsbridge and Lulu Guinness stores, rolling out to department stores nationwide. We are also going to be opening new stores starting with the first Lulu Guinness boutique in W1 and have confirmed locations opening in South Korea and Kuala Lumpur with China soon to be confirmed. We are also looking to increase our distribution in Russia and the Middle East. luluguinness.com 57

WWW.ZEFRANK.COM/ SCRIBBLER This recommendation follows plenty of press and publicity. Made famous through the Apple iPad and iPhone applications, Scribbler turns your random, uninspiring lines into interesting works of art. It’s fun for 5 minutes, but if you keep at it, you might be surprised at what it can produce. With the ability to save a

high resolution image, you might actually consider putting it onto canvas (then, probably eBay). V3.PLANNINGWIZ.COM We’re moving office very soon (other side of the building if you’re interested) and this tool has been invaluable. It’s like testing Feng Shui using the web. Discovering what works and what doesn’t before committing

to buying shelves or sofas. The great thing about the tool is its ease of use. No forms, just log on, select your room size and start playing.

Ralph Shand, Sales manager, Winkworth Clerkenwell, comments:“The year has started well for our office - we have seen a 14% increase in applicants and 15% increase in sales agreed. This strength has resulted in a significant rise in values achieved per square foot and in our opinion the market is outperforming the RALPH SHAND previous peak reached in 2007 in terms of values achieved per square foot. This quarter we have been marketing a new build development of four apartments at £850 per sq ft, easily outstripping similar properties in the local area. Two apartments have already completed and one is under offer, to a mixture of investors and owner occupiers. The investment theme is strong in Clerkenwell, with investors looking for good opportunities outside the core prime areas of London where the market is currently exceptionally competitive. The Crossrail development has had a significant effect on the perception of the area and values have increased some 12% since the green light. An increase in demand for property in the area has stemmed from both Crossrail and the development of the sites for the 2012 Olympic Games with many of the contractors being accommodated here. Supply remains very restricted in Clerkenwell and the demand that we are seeing means properties are selling quickly. All of this would imply a positive outlook for average values in Clerkenwell for the foreseeable future”. Winkworth, 67 Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell, EC1M 3JB Tel: 020 7405 1288 71

MORTGAGES

TO FIX OR NOT TO FIX?

The latest mortgage index from John Charcol suggests that the recent sharp increase in the proportion of borrowers choosing a fixed rate has been reversed. Between September of last year and February of this year the proportion of John Charcol clients choosing a fixed rate more than doubled, but this trend was reversed in March, resulting in virtually a 50/50 split between fixed and variable rates. Ray Boulger, Senior Technical Manager at John Charcol, comments on this and other findings

“I

n March 2010, exactly 1 year after the historic cut in Bank Rate to an all time low of 0.5%, just 17% of our clients chose a fixed rate mortgage. The proportion then started increasing as the cost of fixed rates fell, reducing the premium one had to pay for security, and as people started worrying about rate increases. With the cost of fixed rates bottoming out around the turn of the year and increasing worries about a rate rise as a result of the surging CPI, fixed rate take up jumped sharply from 32.2% in December to 56.0% in February. In March this figure fell to 49.9% as borrowers were put off fixed rates by the hike in price.

Looking ahead, the fall in year on year CPI in March has taken some pressure off the MPC and as CPI increased by 0.6% in April last year any increase of less than that this month will result in a further fall in the April year on year figure. That said, in the following 3 months it will be more of a challenge for CPI to continue falling as the previous year’s figure which will fall out of the year on year calculations will be + 0.2%, +0.1 and -0.2%. “All this suggests the market is running ahead of itself in terms of the timing and speed of Bank Rate increases and we expect the take up of fixed rates to decline further until the best 5 year rates fall back below 4% to reduce the premium over variable rates to a more acceptable level.

ASK THE EXPERT Andrew Flint from Colman Coyle, gives his expert advice on all your legal property questions I bought a flat about a year ago. I have just received a service charge demand that includes something called a “balancing charge” for a period before I bought my property. Is it right that I should be liable for this? A “balancing charge” or “excess service charge” will arise if the budgeted service charge is exceeded by the actual expenditure. Usually, the conditions contained in the contract of sale provide for the seller to be responsible for any excess service charges up until the date of completion. However, if no further provisions are made in the contract, it does present a practical problem in trying to contact the seller and obtain the money to cover the excess service charge that is due. Your solicitor may of course be able to contact the seller’s solicitors but problems will arise if the seller’s solicitors are no longer in contact with their client. To try and avoid this scenario, it is quite common for the seller’s solicitors to retain a sum of money from the proceeds of sale to cover any excess service charge that might be due for their client’s period of ownership. Agreeing what that figure will be is not an exact science but guidance can be obtained from looking at past accounts. An additional clause is usually added to the contract to provide for a retention to be held by the seller’s solicitors until such time as the accounts for the relevant financial years have been finalised. Therefore, what you should do is contact your solicitor and find out whether a retention was held and if so, send your solicitor a copy of the excess service charge demand so he or she can take it up with the seller’s solicitors.
