DOWN Helen Baron speaks to Renaissance woman, reformed rock chick and onetime leader of the infamous Primrose Hill Set, Pearl Lowe
A
s an interviewer, there are some celebrities you approach with as much trepidation as curiosity. For me, Pearl Lowe is one of them. There are good reasons for this. Lowe’s life story is a pretty sensational book, and one that’s already well-thumbed. (I mean this metaphorically, but it’s a literal truth as well: Lowe’s biography, All that Glitters, was published in 2007 to a great deal of interest from all quarters of the media, of which more later.) Famous love affairs, rock ‘n’ roll friends, a drug-fuelled decline and fall – not to mention the determined reconstruction of a ruined life out of its own ashes: all have been slathered across the press time and time again, and not always in the most sympathetic of lights. I’d done my research, so I knew that the ‘Pearl Lowe story’ consisted of a colourful, chaotic ride through the ups of downs of outward success and inward isolation. But something strange struck me amid all the highs and lows, and that was the absence of
a sense of who Lowe really is. I knew a great deal about what had happened to her, but very little about the woman herself. After a while, it seemed the person I had met while trawling tabloid archives and scanning the pages of upmarket Sunday supplements was less a person than a preconception. So I was pleased to have the chance to find out the truth for myself – but cautious also, lest my interview serve only to reinforce the clichés I wanted to leave behind. I call Lowe at home one evening in early summer – I’ve been given her mobile and landline numbers by her PR, which in retrospect seems the first clue as to the surprise that’s in store. When she answers the phone, Lowe is momentarily confused. It turns out she’d forgotten about the interview, so I offer to call back another time. But she won’t hear of it. Instead, she asks for a moment to say goodbye to a visiting friend and then returns to the phone. And rather than seeming like she’s been caught unawares, she’s as bright and friendly as they come; so friendly, in fact, that ten minutes into our 45-minute conversation, I’m struck by the feeling that I’m talking to someone I’ve known for years. Even though we’ve never met or
spoken to each other before. This unwarranted familiarity is testament to the power of Lowe’s personality, but there’s nothing sinister or insipid about it. She seems cheerily unaware of her power to charm and her conversation is gleefully free of the mundane platitudes of the ‘media trained’. She’s playful, funny and sometimes painfully frank – her openness about her darker and more destructive moments can seem almost uncomfortable, until you remember that her ability to be honest with herself is a quality that helped to save her life – and she talks about anything and everything (but especially family, work and music) with maximum brio. She also likes to zoom off on sprees of questions about me – my profession, my taste in music, my feelings toward London and life in the capital. It’s such vitality, I imagine, that has seen her go on to flourish where others would have fallen from the public eye completely. A child of the nineties Britpop scene, Lowe was a teenage ‘indie chick’ with a boundless appetite for music when she first arrived in the public eye in the mid-nineties. The front-woman for a promising guitar band, Powder, she quickly earned herself a record deal and a place in the ‘Primrose Hill Set’,

the coolest crowd in North London at the time (or so the media had it), counting Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Kate Moss and Liam Gallagher among her friends and fellow party animals. “They were exciting times and there was always someone calling up offering you opportunities, asking you to go to these glamourous parties. I’d promise the kids I’d do something like bake a cake with them, and then I’d get a call saying Mulberry will give you a thousand pounds and a bag if you come to their party for an hour tonight. And it’s so hard to turn down. There’s always a carrot being dangled.” But the dream turned sour with disastrous predictability. Booze, drugs and the soul-sapping superficiality of the celebrity lifestyle took their toll, and by the latter days of the decade, Lowe was struggling to balance her desire for a fulfilling family life with the twin diseases of addiction and despair. “In the end I was quite damaged by life, by friends and stuff. I thought I couldn’t cope, for a while I really wanted my life to end. And then I just thought, I’m strong, I can turn this around. So I went to the country and cut off everyone I know who did drugs – I just had to be free of that, I didn’t want it in my life. For a long time there, I wasn’t the kind of mother I wanted to be. I wanted to change that. I’ve been clean for seven years now.” To make matters worse, the press had a field day with Lowe, portraying her as that terrible thing – a woman who dared to run with the boys and have a family to boot. I tell her I find it interesting that she was so viciously excoriated by some in the past, despite always being open and highly self-aware about her mistakes. If she was a man, I suggest, she’d have been seen as a rock ‘n’ roller or party animal rather than a vapid groupie with a naked desire for fame. “I was a Britpop girl, that was
my scene. I was in bands, my friends were in bands. I never wanted to be part of some ‘Primrose Hill’ scene. These were just the people I knew. I think the press painted me in a very different light to how I actually am. I never thought of myself as famous. My burning desire was to be a great singer, a great musician. And unfortunately, drugs got me. And I ruined every chance I ever had.” And in the end, it was this ability to see fame clearly for what it was – to see its limitations and the threats it posed – that spurred her to turn her life around. With
homewares range (including more lace) and her design work for high street retailer Peacocks – which you’ve no doubt seen in advertisements featuring her eldest daughter, model Daisy Lowe (‘Oh, she’s great, she’s not got the self-destruct thing that I had, even as a two year old she was so sensible, telling me what to do.’) Many of Lowe’s creative endeavours will soon be showcased and available to buy at her forthcoming store on hip website notonthehighstreet.com But perhaps the most exciting thing is the movie of Lowe’s biography that’s currently in development. When the book (the aforementioned All that Glitters) was announced, many expected a vacuous ‘I was there’ tale about a bunch of rich young adults overdoing it in nineties Camden. They got instead the brutally honest and moving story of a young woman getting waylaid by addiction while in pursuit of her childhood dreams. The book’s not big on self-pity, but you can’t help but feel for its author – and admire her desire to get back on her feet and make good on lost time. It’s another reminder of how little journalists have managed to convey of Pearl Lowe’s real self over the years, lost as many of them are in the shallow caricature they’ve tried to make of her. It’s a caricature that falls apart after just half an hour of talking, and I tell her so. She seems truly moved – then tries to turn the conversation back once more to me, my life, my hopes for the future. In winding up our conversation, I do eventually manage to return the focus to her, and to the family for whom she pulled herself clear of the darkness that was dragging her down. I tell her that her husband (she and Goffey married in 2008 at the insistence of their children) sounds like a great guy, and suggest that their relationship seems destined to go the distance. In response, she tells me that the director of All that Glitters, whom she had met to discuss the project just the week before, doesn’t see her story as a cautionary tale. “He sees it as a love story,” Lowe sighs, sounding for all the world like a love-struck teenager. And therein, perhaps, lies the secret to her charm: she has the experience of a few lifetimes under her belt already – but the passion and enthusiasm of her youth remain entirely undimmed.
THE FRONT-WOMAN FOR A PROMISING GUITAR BAND, POWDER, SHE QUICKLY EARNED HERSELF A RECORD DEAL AND A PLACE IN THE ‘PRIMROSE HILL SET’ the support of her partner (and former Supergrass drummer) Danny Goffey, and thanks in no small part to her love for her four kids, Lowe kicked the various habits that were destroying her: booze, drugs, fame and even London itself. She escaped to the country, first to a small commuter village in Hampshire, which didn’t quite cut it (‘I felt quite far away from the people we knew there; they were lovely but they were very wealthy, the wives didn’t have to work and we were struggling a bit at that point’) and then to a more traditional hideaway in Somerset. Now she divides her time between the capital (for work) and her rural home, and seems completely confident in the wisdom of her decision. “Life started getting really good when I moved to Somerset. It’s too far from London to commute and you get a lot of creative people moving out here, musicians and writers. We’ve made some really good friends and everyone had children and the children come first. It’s good that I got away from my old life; people of my age ought to be tucked up in bed by ten!” This new sense of balance has also allowed Lowe to explore some of the creative ideas that her former lifestyle swallowed up, and when I ask her what projects she has on the go right now, I’m shocked at just how much she has on her plate. There’s a new line of stationery, a limited edition line of fine lace dresses, a

FIT FOR A KING
It all began with transport. Before progress took hold and made King’s Cross what it is today, it was an agrarian area. A single ‘New Road’ was built in 1756, a straight route from Paddington to the City that went onto to comprise the Marylebone, Euston and Pentonville Roads. The name ‘King’s Cross’ came into use from the 19th century onwards, in honour of George IV (who reigned from 1820-1830) - the sovereign’s statue was originally erected at the crossroads of the New Road (now Euston Road), Maiden Lane (now York Way), Pentonville Hill and Gray’s Inn Rd. Though the statue did not last, the name to which it gave rise has endured. Continuing developments ensured the urbanisation of the area; the Imperial Gas Light and Code Company built a gasworks and the Regent’s Canal was completed. King’s Cross Station opened in 1850, while St Pancras, built in the 1860s, functioned as a rival to the Midland Railways. However, extensive building, a busy urban
ambitious project that aims to bring more ofces, shops, homes and a university (expected this month) to the area. The university alone will see up to 4,500 staff and students from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design moving into the Granary Complex, while Granary Square - one of the largest public squares in London - will boast a whopping 1,100 water jets when completed. The retail space will house high street shops as well as (thankfully) independent and boutique units, and is looking to attract outdoor seasonal markets, cafes and Michelin-starred restaurants. The main commercial area will be centred around the brick arches of the Coal Drops by Granary Square and Regent’s Canal, making it a truly unique London shopping destination. The space will undoubtedly benet from the footfall attracted by the new King’s Cross Station concourse.
Exciting things are afoot at the heart of King’s Cross... WORDS: HELEN BARON canal, freight facilities and railway goods yards (all hallmarks of a major transport interchange) meant that the area gained a reputation for being rather down-at-heel.
A NEW BEGINNING
It was not until the 21st century, when art and cultural institutions were drawn to the area, that it really began to ourish. Creative industries made it their home and previously derelict buildings were refurbished. St Pancras was repositioned as a major international station with a high speed route to Paris, and now there’s the King’s Cross Central development scheme: an

But it’s not all business; the designers have dedicated over 40% of development potential to public open space. Ten new parks and squares, twenty new streets, urban ‘home zones’, three new bridges and more than 400 mature trees have been promised, with Camden Council seeing the project as a sign of changing attitudes towards public spaces and a significant step towards improving their quality. There are plans to improve access to the Regent’s Canal with terraced steps and pavilion buildings as well as fountains. It’s also great to see that the developers are interested in energy efficient building; their target is to cut carbon emissions by at least 50%. Until recently, huge Quentin Blake illustrations could be seen wrapped around the temporary walls of the development site, an indication of the new and inclusive cultural renaissance it is hoped will be sparked by the building work. The artwork, depicting a welcoming party, covered the first building (which is Grade II Listed) that visitors saw from the new arrivals entrance to St Pancras International station. Quentin Blake himself was thrilled to see his drawings reproduced on such a huge scale.
“I’m pleased to be involved in this project because I hope that it will help to promote our plans to create a Museum of Illustration within the great King’s Cross redevelopment,” he has said. “Maybe this Big Illustration will also remind people of the power and impact illustration can have in our everyday lives.” With plans for new theatres, independent spaces, community facilities and annual festivals, the regeneration scheme is contributing greatly to the economic and cultural life of the area. With up to 50 more arts and music venues and visitor attractions planned within existing and refurbished heritage buildings, King’s Cross is shaping up to be a major London

The unique skip garden at King’s Cross is made up of 7 moveable self-sustaining vegetable gardens being moved to a new location where young people from the local area will continue to produce their harvest of vegetables and sell them to local restaurants. These mini skip gardens include an orchard, a wormery, a poly-tunnel skip, a herb skip and three croprotation skips.

Support Act We head to Design Also to get some much-needed bra-fitting advice…
A
woman’s bra size can change a number of times in her life and for a variety of reasons – fluctuations in weight, physical activity, diet, pregnancy and contraception being just a few of them. The result is that the majority of women in the UK wear the wrong size bra. For that reason, we thought it was high time to head down to Design Also to get fitted properly, once and for all, by expert bra-fitter Yvonne Lyddon.
MEASURE UP
Yvonne started out in nursing but a slipped disc meant that she had to discontinue her training. Working in the Evening and Cocktail Dress department at Harrods gave her a good introduction to the vagaries of womenswear sizing and she went on to work with lingerie and hosiery, finally opening Design Also in 1983.
This last is a common problem. The bra needs to fit under the bust, in a straight line round the back and fixed on the lowest hook to keep the fit for longer. The back of the bra should sit under the shoulder blades. “I had a pregnant customer whose bra went right over her shoulder blades at the back,” says Yvonne. “It makes such a difference to wear the right size bra.”
Yvonne knows from experience that 95% of women are wearing the wrong size bra, and recommends getting fitted with every new bra purchase, because brands tend to size up differently and different shapes suit different body types. Her expertise and experience means Yvonne can now fit many customers by eye – “Someone under five feet three inches in height,” she explains by way of example, “is rarely over a 32-inch ribcage, because of their bone structure.” Every customer of Design Also benefits from a proper fitting - as well as from the hugely extensive range of bra styles the shop carries, with fashionable bras to cater for any breast shape, any occasion and any desired silhouette. So what are Yvonne’s top troubleshooting tips? The most common problem is wearing a bra too small in the cup. Before going up in inches, try a larger cup size. “A woman’s rib-cage does not change at all. The most common change made at Design Also is from a 36B to a 32DD.”
If you find a shape that suits you, buy it in every colour. “It’s difficult to say what are good shape enhancers as everyone is different, but I like low cups and half cups. Remember that white shows through under white. If your bra is riding up your back, it is too big in the cup.”
Washing care is very important! “Bras are made of approx 30 different pieces and the fabric is delicate. Hand wash them and use a gentle detergent such as Ecover. Never tumble-dry them and don’t dry them on a radiator. Heat causes bobbling, soggy patches and shape/colour change. O
ne of the most common conditions among our patients is tiredness. Doctors are so used to hearing about it that they have a shorthand way of writing it on your notes (TATT tired all the time). Why are we all so exhausted? What can be done? Read on to find out the Chinalife approach to fatigue: STEP 1: EAT AND DRINK FOR ENERGY The aim of a good diet is to take in nutrition whilst keeping your blood sugar levels steady. THE SPICE ROUTE Helen Baron takes the path you’d do well to travel at Roots at N1 The Concept I’m rather in love with the growing number of small independent restaurants sequestered in the back roads of Islington. The wide, antiquated streets that make up the Barnsbury area can seem like another world, a remnant of a bygone era very far from the hustle and bustle of contemporary Upper Street. Barnsbury’s old terraces and narrow-fronted houses were left intact during the wider area’s redevelopment because the poorer district was considered somehow secondary to requirements, unworthy of investment – with the irony being that the area now boasts some of north London’s most desirable period properties. It’s a community within a community, and as such, it’s the perfect spot for the kind of independent business that fuels and thrives on local spirit. For a while now, cute delis have blossomed in Barnsbury alongside modish bistros and gastropubs du jour (one of them even certified organic). And since
February this year, there’s been Roots at N1. This is no ordinary Indian restaurant. The brainchild of three hospitality professionals who earned their stripes in the service industry by way of The Ritz (London), Benares (Mayfair) and The Oberoi (New Delhi), the restaurant represents the combination of each of its founders’ ten or more years of hard graft and expertise. The owners endeavour to be anything but run of the mill, and their dedication shows. Hailing from the same part of Northern India (hence the name Roots), all three proprietors believe in the importance of clean flavours, authentic food, skilful presentation and excellent wines – not to mention high-class service. They’ve hit the nail on the head: this is no curry house; this is Indian haute cuisine. “Eating out should be a journey for people as soon as they enter our restaurant,” explains Rohit Bisht, one of the founders, “the food complemented by a professional
and relaxed service.” I completely agree: eating should be an ‘experience’. It’s not just about what we put in our gobs; it’s appreciating how our dish got there and how it utilises flavours, seasonal produce and spices. It’s about how we react to it and the atmosphere in which we eat it. Endearingly, the Roots team are also ethically aware, supporting WWF’s Save the Tiger campaign via donations and pin badgewearing waiters. Of course, the plight of the tiger – the national animal of India – is well documented. But it’s unexpected (and so all the more pleasing) to see a restaurant backing such a worthy cause – and surely an ingredient in the establishment’s burgeoning word-of-mouth success.
The food The Roots menu saw me in my element. Our hosts explained that the soft-shell crab with green paw-paw relish and the tandoori tiger prawns with pickle have become

signature dishes and are best sellers, but my companion and I were after a veggie feast, so we plumped for the Chef’s selection of specially prepared vegetarian dishes with sides of stuffed tandoori potato barrels and spinach and lentil cake with coconut and bell pepper. Even an average Indian restaurant can accommodate vegetarians pretty well, but at Roots our tastebuds were in for a rare treat. Our six sharing dishes arrived perfectly proportioned; adequate-sized plates of black lentils with red kidney beans, sautéed peas à la cumin and ginger, mint-flavoured new potatoes, basmati rice, cumin and cucumber raita, delicious apricot naan bread and the recommended Reisling wine. I loved the ‘tapas’ influenced servings – with so many amazing dishes available it was a relief not to have to choose just one. Don’t get me wrong: we were full at the end, but comfortably so, and with the satisfying knowledge that we’d broadened our palates as well. For me, the standout plate was the tandoori cottage cheese with smoked balsamic, which didn’t taste like cottage cheese at all, but a sort of delicate, plumped out, creamy seitan. My partner, meanwhile, lapped up the lentil dahl dish. We weren’t let down by dessert either; eschewing those pre-made freezer jobs (you know the type, cheap sorbets served in frozen lemons and oranges, the rockhard chocolate bombes), Roots offers a good selection of more refreshing options. We ended with a bite-sized chunk of deliciously spiced carrot cake and plenty of traditional Indian kulfi ice cream, again lightly spiced and with the added treat of a berry-infused sauce (about which my companion remarked, between spoonfuls,

“you must mention the coulis”). We stayed well beyond the end of our meal, tending two glasses of French Muscat de Beaumes and soaking up the ambience.
The atmosphere When I spoke to him after our meal, Rohit told me that the secret to good Indian cooking is to follow the basics at all times, being careful not to overuse or over-enhance flavours. Only once the fundamental principles and ingredients are understood can one begin to experiment. Perhaps he has applied the same principle to the décor at Roots, which is stylishly contemporary and suitably intimate without ever seeming too starchy or formal. The wooden flooring and tasteful colour scheme befit the nature of the restaurant and its
fare, elegant but never overdone. In fact, the restaurant is a good reflection of what I imagine might be the interiors choices of many local residents! It’s a wonderful feeling when you discover a restaurant that exceeds conventional expectations and ensnares you with a magic all its own. Roots at N1 does just that. Reinvigorating one of the world’s great culinary traditions by using classic ingredients in new and unforgettable ways, Roots shows that a local restaurant can outgun the mightiest competition in the capital. It’s certainly at home here in Barnsbury – as cool, characterful and downright desirable as the area itself. And though its location may mean a lack of footfall outside its front doors, that only adds to its charm. Besides, I have a feeling that before too long, people will be flocking from much, much further afield to sample its delights. n

DOT-TO-DOT Gemma Billington has a working lunch at Spitalfield’s Indian haute- cuisine restaurant Scarlet Dot
O
n an unusually hot summer’s day, Spitalfields Market is even busier than normal; heaving with families, tourists and, as it’s lunchtime, city workers on the hunt for somewhere good to eat. Spitalfields has come a long way from its Victorian market-hall past, and although it holds a certain historic charm, it is now a chic and very contemporary hub of activity. There are literally hundreds of places to choose from for a spot of lunch but, judging from the line of people outside Scarlet Dot, this is one of the most popular choices.
Indian cuisine may not seem like the most appropriate lunch-time option, but it’s clear before even entering Scarlet Dot that it’s different to your standard Saturday night curry house. Scarlet Dot sits in the stylish Crispin Square, behind the famous indoor market. The line of people are queuing at a grill in front of the restaurant, waiting for a fresh wrap. Though it’s a busy time of day, there’s plenty of space both in the outdoor seating area and inside the restaurant and as I enter, there’s no sense of lunch hour panic but rather a very calm and relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant
interior is a contemporary black with subtle scarlet accents. The Japanese influence is clear and is a very different approach to other ‘traditional’ Indian restaurants. The Asian theme is also found in Scarlet Dot’s take on the Japanese classic ‘bento box’ - part of the express lunch served daily. My companion (who happens to be running late and on a tight one-hour break) and I decide to try out the bento boxes, even though the standard main menu of succulent curries, chargrilled meat, fish and side dishes are extremely tempting. The bento box option, however, offers a great selection and variety of food, perfectly-sized. I opt for a vegetarian box of Ghobi Aloo Ka Sangam (cauliflower and potatoes stir-fried with fenugreek), Chana Limbu (chick peas in spicy sauce) served with Naan and Pilau Rice. My companion goes for a similar choice but with chicken tikka and a meat samosa. The bentos are served with a complimentary drink and I’m instantly drawn to the ‘Scarlet Delight’ smoothie comprised of guava, lychee and passion fruit and, it’s just as sweet and refreshing as it sounds. There’s an impressive list of drinks, from virgin cocktails to wine and exotic rums, whiskeys, champagnes and spirits - perfect for a night out or even an extra-long lunch with little chance of returning to the office.
The selection of food and drink is fantastic and though I could have easily taken advantage of the excellent menu, the proportions of the bento box are just right. At the end of the meal I feel full without having overindulged. As a nation we tend to go overboard with our curries and often order an unnecessarily excessive amount. The bento box is a great option to ensure that you don’t return to work feeling uncomfortable and ready to fall asleep on your keyboard. The quality of the food is also very high. Each dish is full of fresh, fragrant herbs and spices and served with a slice of lime for a zesty kick. The level of ’spice’ is just right too; a crucial factor considering my inability to stomach anything too hot! I end my lunch with a cup of Mövenpick ice-cream whilst watching the crowds of Spitalfields mill about their business. The variety and quality of the food at Scarlet Dot make it a refreshing change from greasy take-aways and it’s a delicious and affordable alternative to my regular squashed sandwiches. n the far northern countries of Scandinavia, the clear summer light is one of the dominant features of the landscape. Forests, seas, lakes and mountains are bathed in its clarity, and for half the year the sun hardly sets below the horizon. The people make the most of the outdoors while they can, for the winter means long days in which the light is low and short-lived. Because of this, light is a quality that is highly valued. In their homes, the Scandinavians make every effort to maximise any gleam of light that enters. Simple, clutter-free rooms painted white have pale floors and understated window dressings. These elements are easily put together to create an interior style that is simple and unassuming, and whether you live in a city apartment or a country house, clutter-free rooms and a pale colour palette are a flawless formula that will help achieve a home that is filled with light.

Basements that’s what you’ll nd; hundreds of them, all over London. There are so many basements being built around London that you would be forgiven for thinking we are becoming a subterranean species. Some high prole celebrities are so against them, when even more of the glitterati are having them built. So, we thought we would ask our old sparring partner, Steven McDicken from Metropolitan Basements, to justify the upheaval, the digging , the dirt and the bad press! Why do people hate basements? The only people who hate basements are the ones that don’t need them. Everybody else I know loves them. So… why do people love basements? Simple… more space! and at a fraction of the cost of moving home.
At a fraction of the cost… please explain? Well if you wanted to move home it would cost you say £800 to £1500 per square foot for that extra oor space and if you build a basement it only costs you, £400 per square foot including the VAT. In fact, what you would save on the stamp duty you have to pay when moving house, goes a long way to buying a large part of your basement! So are you saying it’s purely for money? No… more space! But, by doing so you just happen to create rather a lot of equity in your home. It ‘coincidently’ makes good nancial sense. Unless you just sell it on, of course.
What about the bad press? People will always be people; they will make a mountain out of a basement, then they will turn around and build one themselves. No one wants to live next door to a basement being dug… the noise for a start, do you think they will ban them eventually? They can’t, they’re largely permitted development and you can’t see them. As for the noise, they are no less noisy than digging your garden and they are a million times quieter than someone digging up the road. Trafc noise in London is more than the sound of a basement being dug. Anyway, we work 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, when everybody is at work.

Planning is not an issue then? There is no reason why it should be. Except listed buildings and even then it can be done. How long to build one? Depends on the size but let’s say 1220 weeks for the majority of houses in London. Who designs them? We have an architect who is rather experienced with them. He wrote a book: Architect Your Home by Hugo Tugman. There is a section in there all about basements too. You can buy it from www.anovabooks. com Don’t be put off by his picture, he is actually one of the nicest architects I’ve ever met. So what’s your parting shot to the basement critics and lovers alike? Well, not a parting shot - just a statement that the majority of people will eventually get a basement dug to gain that extra space, especially in the more afuent areas of London. Even if you are against it now, you will succumb in the months or years to come or the people that move into your house after you are gone will get one done. It’s just going to happen, like it or not, and it’s going to be widespread, just in the same way double glazing stated in the 70’s, but much less intrusive or visible because it’s underground!

eaving the shadows of New York’s towering skyscrapers, we headed south to the nation’s capital, Washington DC, to view the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the White House. As we left the eastern seaboard and crossed the Appalachian Mountains we entered music enthusiasts’ America, stopping at Tennessee, home of country music at ‘The Grand Ole Opry’ and Memphis, ‘the home of blues’, before turning south to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. For the next three days we traversed the wide open expanse that is Texas, where they prove that ‘Everything’s bigger in Texas’. Big cowboy hats, big belt buckles, big trucks and big hair were all around. We explored the Alamo, historic landmark in Texas’ war for independence from Mexico in 1836, before heading into Native American territory. Aztec Ruins National Monument and Mesa Verda National Park offered a glimpse into the lives of the previous occupiers of these lands and their cliff dwellings. This was topped by actually visiting and staying with Native Americans at Monument Valley where we were entertained by traditional Navajo dancing and stayed in a ‘hogan’ (traditional home). Next stop the Grand Canyon with its amazing display of colours at sunrise and sunset, as well as hikes for those of us adventurous enough to journey down. We passed through Death Valley, the lowest point in North America, before reaching Las Vegas, my highest point! Entertainment, lights, restaurants, you name it, they do it! Our journey finished by heading into the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite National Park with its amazing granite walls and thundering waterfalls before arriving in San Francisco, America’s most beautiful city….and the end of an epic adventure!” Tim travelled on Intrepid Travel’s 22-day Roadtrip America Westbound costing £1410 per person (excluding international flights.) Folklore vs science, you decide

jadAn lee London lad Jadan Lee is a refreshing up-and-coming talent amongst the American dominated charts and has created the perfect summer hit with latest single, Definitely You. We catch up with Jadan to discuss musical inspirations, his love of the city and what’s next in line. Watch this space... Words: Gemma Billington
D
espite his relatively new status as an artist, Jadan Lee has been on the musical radar for some time now, amassing a rather impressive back catalogue of collaborations. Having worked as a producer with the likes of Mark Ronson and toured with Ne-Yo and Timbaland, Jadan’s style is an easy-listening mixture of pop, soul and R’n’B - though it’s his new single Definitely You, with its reggae inspired summer vibe, that’s creating a buzz and drawing comparisons to Hawaiian pop star Bruno Mars. During our meeting, we discuss everything from the time he met the late Amy Winehouse to his ambitions to write music for films. Once a dedicated athlete,
a career in music was inevitable for Jadan - from his gospel singing grandfather to growing up in a house filled with vinyl: music was always in the background. It took a supportive teacher to discover his talent and a surprise win for best unsigned act at the UMAs in 2004 to catapult him into a pop career. And he’s never looked back. Tell us about your musical background. I understand that you were originally more interested in sport and nearly took up football professionally. What inspired the change? I think I’ve always been into music through my dad and my family. My grandfather was
a gospel singer and sang in the church choir and even performed at the Royal Albert Hall. He was a great singer, he did a lot in music and my dad has always been a big influence on me, though I didn’t realise it at the time! He was a successful DJ back in the late 70s, early 80s, performing around North West and Central London. His record collection is absolutely massive and he’s got so much material: from Motown to Rock to the New Romantics in the 80s. I suppose that collection inspired me and moulded my varied taste in music. Music was always there - I’ve always had it around me, but growing up I was a footballer and an athlete and I excelled at sports. I did take GCSE music - I was a little bit of a lad in school and my music teacher had no 69

time for me at first - but I wrote a song and sang it and all of a sudden he took notice and told me I needed to pursue it professionally. He was really supportive and showed me the course at Stanmore College. Music was a dream of mine but I didn’t realise I actually had any talent for it so it was nice that a teacher, who initially had no time for me suddenly said, ‘you’re good and you need to do this’. On the subject of the course in Popular Music you undertook at Stanmore College, how has studying in an academic environment influenced your subsequent career? The set up there was great, I had a lot of time to perfect my production skills as I’d never really done anything like that before and I found a love of making music - so I think it developed me a lot in that sense. I started to make music for myself and other people and I did a few live performances, but on a production level it was fantastic. As a producer (under the pseudonym Tru Menace) you’ve worked with big names such as Mark Ronson, Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks. How does production compare with being a performer. Do you have a preference? I wouldn’t say I have a preference but it’s been amazing to work with top acts such as Taio Cruz - he’s doing amazing things at the moment. I also worked with Daniel Merriweather and Mark Ronson on the single Chainsaw. You’ve listed classic soul signers such as Marvin Gaye as a source of inspiration but your music undoubtedly has a contemporary edge and you studied Popular music. What are your all-time favourite artists and who do you admire in the charts today? I’ve got to say Bruno Mars. I also love what Adele’s doing - she’s so different. On a production level I’d say Will.I.Am and David Guetta. There are a lot of great contemporary artists, but whenever anyone asks me who my top musical inspiration is, it’s Michael Jackson all the way. I love everything about him; his music, stage presence, as a performer...for me he was the best ever, no-one will ever get close to him. He is the ultimate.

What inspired the song and how would you describe your musical style? Well I love pop music and I love to write pop songs, but my music has a soul, R’n’B edge because my vocals will always have that. Definitely You was a song that just came to me - I had to record it on my phone as I didn’t have my dictaphone on me! When I was singing it it had that kind of reggae bounce. We’re produced the track with Jeff Calvert, a string orchestra, brass, drums...all live. The video was shot at Southbank and we had the best day for it; if it wasn’t for the landmarks in the video people wouldn’t have believed it was shot in London! I had a great time filming and I guess that shows, it was an amazing day with beautiful sunshine. As a Londoner, would you say it’s a good city for up and coming artists? What venues have you performed at? London’s great; it’s the best city in my opinion, it’s definitely one of the best for music artists starting out. I’ve performed at the Jazz café with Omar which was fantastic. I’ve also played at Shepherds Bush alongside Floetry which was great and I’ve performed at Cargo in Shoreditch many times and some little clubs in Camden - there’s a great music scene there! Tell us about the Urban Music Award (UMA) that you won for best unsigned act in 2004... My friend’s older brother was part of the marketing team at the UMAs and my friend showed him my music and he loved it and wanted to enter it for best unsigned act. I thought it was a great idea but didn’t
think too much on it as he said there were around 3,000 applicants! Then I got through to the last 15 - wow! - so I had to perform along with the other successful applicants at Rouge Club at Centre Point, Tottenham Court Road. I’d only ever performed on a small scale for my friends in college, so that was my first proper live performance. I got through to the last 3 and the final was at the Barbican Centre. It was such a huge stage, packed with tiers of people and it was an audience vote. They called my name to say I’d won and the whole place went mad. It was amazing because I won from the actual audience vote...that kind of kick-started my whole live career. That was the beginning for me. Where did things go from there? I supported Omar after I won the UMA - I was really new to the game in terms of live performances and he was at the UMAs when I won and asked me personally that night and 2 weeks later I was supporting him live at the Jazz café. That was one of my favourite gigs because it was at the beginning of my journey. What have you got lined up next? We’re promoting the single at the moment and we’re very busy with that. I’ve got some shows coming up and just finishing off the album. I’ve been locked in the studio for a little while now! Songwriting and production for me is where my heart is, I just love to do it and I guess it comes naturally. I’m writing everyday and I’m having some great experiences. MY DAY Can you sum up your day in one short paragraph? We’re open from 10 - 7 Monday to Saturday and 11 - 4 on Sunday. I meet lots of different people every day and they’re always amazed when they come into the shop; everyone gets nostalgic about sweets they remember from their childhood - even 12 year olds! Considering we’ve only been open for 4 months we have a lot of regulars too.
Why should people come to Sugacane? Sugacane is an old fashioned sweet shop in a modern setting and people are still impressed when they come through the doors - they think it’s like Willy Wonka! We make customer care our first priority and if we don’t have something they want we’ll try and source it for them.
What did you do before this? I ran a pub in Hoxton - the Lion & Lamb - for 16 years. I was also Vice Chairman of the Local Pub Watch. How did you get started? I bought my local pub in 1993 after working in newspapers for 15 years. After I sold the pub last year I wanted to do something different and I’ve always loved old fashioned sweet shops like Mr Simms and when I saw the Sugacane opportunity I thought it was perfect, it’s a great concept.
What are your best-selling sweets? Pips of various flavours, they come in sour cherry, keylime, toffee apple and orange & lemon to name a few flavours. Rhubard & custard sweets, sweet peanuts, pearl drops and bon-bons are all very popular. Our Sugashakes have been selling well this summer, we have a list of top ten flavours but you can customise your own with literally any sweet in the shop - we’ve had lots of interesting combinations!

LOCAL PROFILE: ANNA FIORENTINI
SHOW GIRL
Now in its tenth year of business, the award winning Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School has been training some of the country’s top young performers from all backgrounds. We catch up with Anna and talk to her about the passion and drive behind her distinguished schools, and why every child deserves the opportunity to perform... Have you always wanted to be involved in the performing arts, in particular working with young people? Since playing the Ugly Duckling at the age of 6, I’ve always wanted to be an actress. Fortunately the roles I get now are slightly more glamorous! After completing my performing arts degree I got a place at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. However, I had less than a year to raise the £10,000 fees and risked losing my place if I didn’t raise it, which caused me a huge amount of stress. In the end, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I learnt some very valuable business skills. To raise the money I started giving piano lessons, started a small drama club for children and developed a real passion for working with young people. What inspired you to start the school, particularly in the East End and North London? I grew up in Hackney and as a child there was no ‘professional’ performing arts training in the area. I wanted to give local children with talent or a need to increase confidence the opportunity to attend a professional school without the extortionate fees. Thanks to the contacts I made in the industry, I recruited some top industry professionals to teach. As the school grew so did our reputation and we now have children travelling from as far as Reading, Brighton and Essex. This helped in the decision to open another branch in North London and

Docklands. By increasing the branches we increase our cash flow which means we can invest even more in young people - this is especially important now that funding is almost impossible to get. However, I am adamant that the school will not turn into a franchise. I’m the head of all the schools and we have regular meetings and I know what is going on in each branch. What types of classes do you offer? We train our students to be all-round performers. There’s a timetable of drama, singing, dance, film and even set and costume design. Within each class the students learn a variety of styles, for example musical theatre, pop and soul. What is the key to running a successful business? You have to be really passionate about the business. I never set out to be a business woman, I was just very passionate about the performing arts and young people. You have to really
understand your competition and work out what makes you unique. However, I also believe in integrity and not to tread on the toes of your competitors. I care about my staff and working as a team. At our meetings I don’t like to come across as the ‘boss’ but of course when decisions have to be made, I have the final say. For the first four or so years of running the school I was very scared to delegate and ended up doing everything myself. I was a perfectionist but also didn’t like to impose on others but now I impose all the time and have expanded the business ten fold. How does the school differentiate to other performance arts academies? Tell us about the ‘community’ ethos and how you support your students and their families. We strike a balance between being a professional stage school and a community venture; schools are normally one or the other. We recruit very well respected professionals in the
industry such as Mark Short, our choreographer, who has worked with Tina Turner and Peter Andre. Unlike most stage schools, we allow our families to pay in installments, making the fees a lot more accessible. We also launched the Fiorentini Foundation earlier this year so that we can offer a Hardship fund to those in need and hopefully this means that corporate companies can now come on board especially if they have CSR departments. Our ethos is that all children regardless of financial, physical or learning difficulties should have access to professional training normally only available to more affluent families. Success stories such as Belinda Owusu (Libby in EastEnders) wouldn’t have been able to achieve her dreams given her circumstances without a scholarship. We are also on hand to all families should they need to discuss any issues. This is particularly significant given recent events and ‘gang culture’ - young people don’t want to be stereotyped and patronised, but rather given the opportunity to develop skills for their futures. Do you think that Islington/ Hampstead has bucked the trend in the market over the last two years? The market in Islington and Highbury has been particularly busy over the rst half of 2011, both in terms of sales and lettings, with record prices being achieved and certainly placing the area within the best performing in London. We are forecasting this to continue for the remainder of 2011. How long have you been based in Islington/Hampstead and what makes this area so special within London? Felicity J Lord has been operating in London for well over a decade with branches throughout North London, City, Docklands and South East London. Our branch in Islington has been operational for only a few months but its predecessor, Thomson Currie, has been part of the Islington estate agency community since the early 1990s. The area continues to attract buyers from all walks of life drawn by its central location and excellent links to the City, Mid Town and West End coupled with the area’s well-established reputation for theatres, restaurants and bars along and surrounding Upper Street. This, coupled with major development at Kings Cross to the west and vastly improved transport links with the opening of the East London line and general shift of London’s centre of gravity eastwards, interest in Islington’s central location will only increase from buyers, investors and

TWO NEW MORTGAGE OFFER OPPORTUNITY FOR FTBS WITH SMALL DEPOSITS
I
ndependent mortgage advisor John Charcol is now delighted to be able to exclusively offer buyers in England and Wales two very innovative, but also very different, solutions for FTBs with only a 5% deposit. One of these new mortgages requires at least one family member to be involved and has a variable rate of only 3.95% and no arrangement fee. The maximum loan is £300,000. “The basis of this 95% LTV Family Offset mortgage is that one or two family members must deposit a total of 20% of the purchase price with the lender, thus reducing the net loan from the lender’s risk perspective to 75% because it takes a charge on the savings. OPTION 2 “The other equally innovative 95% LTV FTB mortgage has a xed rate of 6.49% to 30/4/15. The arrangement fee is only £195 and the early repayment charge is 2% during the xed rate term, although ERC free overpayments of up to 10% p.a. can be made. The maximum loan is £500,000 and the innovation with this mortgage is the way affordability is calculated. “This mortgage is called the ‘Rent to Buy’ Mortgage because affordability is based on the FTB’s rental payment history, which must cover a period of at least 1 year. The maximum monthly mortgage payment will be whatever rent the FTB has been paying. The ability to pay the relevant amount of rent for at least a year provides robust evidence of a similar ability to afford an equivalent monthly mortgage payment. Your initial mortgage consultation is obligation free. There will be a minimum fee for our mortgage service of £450, of which £150 is payable when you apply, and we will retain the commission from the mortgage lender. Alternatively, you can choose the fee only option which is typically 0.65% of the amount borrowed. The precise amount will depend on your circumstances and mortgage loan amount, and will be discussed and agreed before you make a mortgage application.
