EDITOR’S LETTER

I

just love this time of year. Usually I’m rather fearful of falling temperatures, preferring to curl up and absorb the sun’s rays like a cat, but there’s something fantastically atmospheric about Autumn that helps me to forget the growing chill. There’s also something rousing yet melancholic about the changing colours of the season: I think this time of year sees nature’s palette at its most inspiring. What’s more, Autumn lends itself well to fashion: it’s the perfect time to wear a bold, statement coat – it’s not so cold that you’ve given up on style, foregoing any notion of chic in preference for multiple, woolly layers and digging out your ski jacket...Now is the time to make the most of not-quite-winter-wear. With that in mind, we’ve got a coat– packed fashion special for you with collection pieces from Nicole Farhi and local favourite Sefton Womenwear (p28-32). Our history piece shines the spotlight on Islington’s Kings Head Theatre at a very special moment in its lifetime. Its relaunch as ‘London’s Little Opera House at The King’s Head’ marks the start of an adventurous new era for the venue, long celebrated as London’s first ever pub theatre (p16-17). This month we also felt moved to report on the burgeoning Supper Club/Mobile Food scene in our Food Spotlight piece (p40-41), before having a friendly chat with north Londoner and famed party-starter DJ Yoda, just prior to his audiovisual tour (which comes to Islington’s Screen on the Green this November) (p12-14). We’ve also introduced a new feature, Behind The Scenes (p48), with more in the pipeline for next month, so watch that proverbial space. After nattering with Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson, we still found just enough time to catch up with local band Tunng, as they prepare to perform with friends for a special post-Bonfire Night show, (aptly named Embers) at Kentish Town’s legendary Forum (p50-51). I hope you’re enjoying Autumn as much as we are and...have a cracking Bonfire Night! WE L CA LO

A round-up of what Islington Council is doing for the borough…

LISTEN UP MEMBER SCOOPS SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD Listen Up (Islington Council’s youth engagement team) member, Noori Bibi, has been awarded The Sheila McKechnie Campaign for Social Justice Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the local community. Jon Snow hosted the ceremony on 21st September, held at St Martin-in-the-Fields, central London. As leader of the Young Muslim Voices for the past three years, Noori has provided numerous platforms, often through creative projects, for young Muslims, women and refugees to challenge the negative perceptions and stereotypes they are often faced with. By allowing young people to set the campaign agenda on issues they believe to be important, she has helped the voices of young Muslims be heard. Involvement with local mosques and community groups, as well as Arsenal Football Club and anti knifecrime events has helped young people become active members of the community. She has also organised the Young Muslim Voices conferences and has teamed up with the police to run the annual Kick Islamophobia football festival. The Young Muslim Voices have even turned their hand to fi lms, having made a documentary about British Bangladeshi boys. This novel approach, with its emphasis on empowering and engaging young people in the local community, has garnered much praise. Noori and the Young Muslim Voices, of which thousands of people have been involved since its inception in 2007, have accomplished many achievements. Noori said on the night of the ceremony: “It’s such an honour to have been given this award. It shows the voices of marginalised young people and their messages are being heard on a national level and the good work that we do in Islington is being nationally profi led.” Islington Council’s executive member for children and young people, Councillor Richard Watts, was full of praise for Noori and was keen to acknowledge her success: “Congratulations to Noori on her well deserved award for all the fantastic work she’s been doing in Islington.”

SCHOOL BIKE CLUB GETS STUDENTS MOVING Students at Holloway Secondary School have been reaping the benefits of a new bike club thanks to Islington Council’s road safety team. Since the club launched in April, the school has been loaning bikes and helmets to students. Free one-to-one cycle training sessions covering the basics of on-road cycling are provided along with a personalised map planning out a safe cycle route to and from school. Doreen Blake has two sons at Holloway School, both of whom are members of the bike club. She said: “This is a great project. My sons have benefitted from this in that they cycle to school most days and are getting fitter in the process, not to mention gaining more confidence and experience on the road.” At an event held at the school to celebrate the success of the club, prizes including bike computers, lights and puncture repair kits were awarded to students. 14 students have signed up to the club so far and once they’ve completed their training, most are cycling into school at least three days a week. Head of Holloway School, Bob Hamlyn, said: “The bike club has been a great success with more and more students taking up the training and signing up. The initiative has promoted healthy lifestyles and green issues in school.” Due to the success of the scheme at Holloway School, Islington’s road safety team are now also working with Islington Arts and Media and Central Foundation schools to develop similar clubs.

HANDS ON DECK Helen Baron speaks to the musical maverick and boundary-breaking DJ Yoda

CA NOV 10 LEAD Interview.indd 12

01/11/2010 14:15

Interview

I

f you haven’t heard of DJ Yoda, you’ve no doubt felt his influence. A musical magpie, he rose to fame in the early noughties as a partystarting club DJ with a ‘cut and paste’ mixing style that pre-empted the age of the iPod and the new eclecticism with which even the most casual fans now approach music. Before blogging and bootlegs and Spotify and YouTube – as well as the onslaught of Nanos, Shuffles and Touches – Yoda was there: an openminded music lover who blended genres and mixed melodies all to one end: to make people dance. And dance they did, in their thousands and thousands. It’s a dreary October day in London, but I’ve caught Duncan Beiny (the man behind the DJ Yoda moniker) in sunny spirits. A decade into his formidable reign as perhaps the country’s most popular scratch DJ, he’s still willing and able to talk readily, openly and emphatically about his work. Which is just as well, because with a new audiovisual project in the pipeline, plus a tour that includes shows at London’s IMAX cinema and Islington’s Screen on the Green in November, there’s much to talk about. So, I ask him, what’s the forthcoming ‘Stop, Look and Listen’ all about? “In a nutshell,” comes the reply, “I’m using the turntables simultaneously with imagery. The [visual] montage comes chiefly from YouTube clips – I’m always on the lookout for scenes from movies, TV shows and animations that I like, and I chop up the samples in the same way I do music.” Mixing audio and visuals at the same time might seem a tall order to anyone (myself included) who has ever nudged a cross-fader and wound up killing the party completely, but Beiny is no stranger to the art of the mix. He has been working with visuals for some time now, and maintains that the more recent art of VJing fits snugly alongside its audio cousin. “Half the shows I do are AV,” he says, “the other half, just DJ sets. The sets are my roots, my foundation, and I want to stay in touch with that. There’s a lot of new technology in DJing that allows

for experimentation, but I think it’s important to still be able to refer back to DJing the old skool way, with a box of records.” In fact, Beiny was spinning the wheels of steel the ‘old skool way’ just last night. Still, mounting a video-based spectacle in a nightclub is one thing: doing it in a gigantic 3D cinema like the IMAX, or a venerable film buff’s paradise like the Screen on the Green is quite another. Do the locations of the upcoming shows unnerve him at all? The answer, it seems, is not a bit. If anything, he seems excited to be playing at venues so perfectly equipped for his purpose – and it comes as no surprise to find that he studied film at university. In fact, the digital technology he uses to perform his live AV shows is not generally used in this way, being deployed frequently for far more generic purposes: psychedelic visual displays and the like. Beiny’s visuals won’t be a big-screen version

record shops. What followed were bigger bookings, mass adulation from a generation of party-minded youngsters and, in 2006, an album of his own original material, The Amazing Adventures of DJYoda. And as the ‘Stop, Look and Listen’ tour shows, he’s not resting on his laurels yet – though Beiny does say that he thinks the hip-hop genre as a whole has stagnated somewhat in recent years, admitting that there’s not much contemporary hip-hop he enjoys and that this has been reflected in his set-lists. Does he think his fans would agree? “It’s not contrived,” he offers, “I play the music I enjoy; I’m as likely to play country and western as I am dubstep.” If he has to take a guess at what his fans love, at the secret of his success, then he says that perhaps it’s something to do with his very hip-hop habit of meshing the best bits of a complex culture together. He cites Afrika Bambaataa (one of the godfathers of early hip-hop who would fuse soul music with country tunes and TV themes) as a huge influence. And so back to the present. Currently on Beiny’s mp3 player you’ll find a little-known subgenre of music called ‘moombahton’ (apparently it’s a kind of slowed-down Dutch house). He’s also listening to ‘bounce music’. I suddenly feel very out of the loop and old and unhip. Is there anything on the contemporary British urban scene that he likes? He notes that there is a lot of good material out there, then backtracks slightly: “It’s of a more commercial slant, and that more poppy chart stuff doesn’t really float my boat.” He does, however, rate Dizzie Rascal. A mention of his recent collaboration with classical musician Prokofiev (grandson of the vaunted Sergei) sees him grow more enthusiastic. Prokofiev wrote a concerto specifically for turntables, recording samples from orchestral instruments for Beiny to mix (largely improvised) alongside a performance by an actual orchestra. It is such ambitious undertakings as this that have earned Beiny worldwide acclaim, and which have led Q Magazine to declare him one of its ‘ten DJs to see before you die.’

“I PLAY THE MUSIC I ENJOY; I’M AS LIKELY TO PLAY COUNTRY AND WESTERN AS I AM DUBSTEP.” of the flickering pixels on Windows Media Player then? Assuredly not: we’re talking a dynamic and diverse range of videos that will live up to his famously ‘cartoony’ musical adventures. It must take a lot of practice to get all this right, but then Beiny is not your typical faceless dance DJ. He has the air and manner of a modest but enthusiastic showman, grateful for the chance to entertain in ever more challenging and exciting ways. I ask what spurred him to become a DJ, and what follows is in many ways the story of a typical young North London lad. Beiny grew up with hiphop, inspired by the legends of the genre’s early years – knowingly colourful characters who made music that was as big-hearted and creative as their modern counterparts’ efforts can seem mean and generic. He took up DJing while at the University of Warwick and made his name with a series of sought-after mixtapes, distributed via independent

Interview

The assignment turned Yoda on to classical music and he is soon due to start work with another classical artist – deaf percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. It would seem that he’s committed to mixing his projects up as much as his tracks. He’s worked with artists from Princess Superstar to Lily Allen: which, I wonder, has stood out the most? “Probably Biz Markie,” he replies. “On a personal level, he was my favourite rapper growing up in the ‘80s when I was thirteen. To work with a favourite artist like that is just a dream come true.” Having skipped so successfully between genres for a decade or more, what does Beiny think of the latest – and possibly gravest – issues facing the recording industry, namely the digitisation and downloading of music, and its being easily available to listen to for free on the worldwide web? As a DJ who actively seeks out music for a living, I’m interested to hear his take on the situation. “I think its good and bad,” he reasons. “For one thing, it’s a major coup to have access to such a wealth of music in mercurial form.” He tells me that only last night he was DJing, needed a

song instantly and was able to find and download it via his trusty blog sources, instead of traipsing down to the record shop to load himself up with vinyl. “But music runs the risk of being cheapened,” he goes on to say. Then a volte-face of sorts: “I’m not afraid of the industry changing. Hopefully if people are making less money in music it will not mean that they no longer have something to say.” I’m not sure I agree with Beiny’s logic, but it’s exactly the kind of controversial, hopeful viewpoint I’d expect from someone as restlessly creative and constantly on the lookout for new challenges as he seems to be. Before we part, there’s one more subject I want to cover. As a north Londoner who has remained in the area in which he was born and raised – and

yet one whose job has seen him criss-cross the globe – I want to know where his favourite venue is – and if it is still a buzz to play on home turf? He takes a second as he recalls the countless gigs he has played. “I was in Malawi for the Lakes and Stars concert; that was a real honour. I feel so blessed to have played in Brazil, China and Australia – all places with a different vibe…and yet the similarities are striking, everyone in one place, unified by the music. Probably the most memorable North London gigs I do are at Kentish Town Forum and Koko; those are places I went to when I was first old enough to get in.” He laughs. “I’m really looking forward to this cinema tour because a great night out for me is going to the cinema.” A fair point. Still, something tells me this will be a night at the cinema unlike any other…  You can catch DJ Yoda’s Stop, Look and Listen Tour at Screen on the Green on 18th November everymancinema.com 83 Islington Green, London N1 0NU

THE KING’S HEAD THEATRE PUB AllÊ theÊ worldÕ sÊ aÊ stage,Ê asÊ JaimeÊ Tenreiro finds out while investigating the ambitious re-launch of Islington’s first pub theatre

F

or over 40 years, the King’s Head has played a unique role in the artistic, musical and drinking culture of London. Long a place of merriment, theatrical talent and creative ambition, last month saw the venue taking an improbable new direction. Opera is now the focus, and pub performances that strip the likes of Puccini down to their musical core and bring them to the masses are the order of the day. At first it might seem a risky venture, but a quick look at the history of this much-loved venue reminds you that the King’s Head has never been overly concerned with tried and tested formulae.

Nestled between the shops on Upper Street, it would be easy to walk past the King’s Head and assume it housed yet another typical London pub. Take a peek behind its modest Victorian façade, however, and you’ll discover a captivating history. The current building dates back to the 19th century, when the back of the pub – which now houses its renowned theatre – acted as a cockfighting den, boxing ring and pool hall for local drinkers. Historical records show that even as far back as the 15th century, the site has been keeping Londoners well watered, with the earliest incarnation of the King’s Head even getting a mention in Samuel Pepys’ famous diaries. Legend also has it that the pub got its name from the regular visits King Henry VIII

would pay, searching out a cheeky pint en route to visiting one of his mistresses. For all its centuries old pedigree, however, the pub really came to life in 1970, when Dan Crawford bought the establishment with the idea of putting on plays in the dingy space at the back. The idea saw the King’s Head become the first theatre pub in London since Shakespearean times. Crawford set about making his mark by creating a unique setting, where visitors could hear live music seven nights a week (from bands including Dire Straits and Tiger Lilies). The King’s Head quickly became established as the place to drink and be merry – usually as you tried to get your head around the out-dated pricing system: Crawford was firmly anti-

16

In The Spotlight A list of actors who have cut their teeth at the theatre doubles as a who’s who of British talent: Steven Berkoff, Alan Rickman, John Hurt, Kenneth Branagh, Hugh Grant and Ben Kingsley are just a few of the stars who have graced the venue’s stage. The theatre put on a wide variety of performances ranging from new works to classic revivals, always possessed of its trademark brand of originality and daring. The desire to push boundaries and the artistic passion with which that desire was pursued saw the King’s Head become

decimalisation and insisted on showing drinks prices in shillings and pence, a quirk that is still on display today – although thankfully for the arithmetically challenged among us, alongside the modern equivalents! Crawford had another brainwave, too. He soon set about converting the space at the back of the pub into a theatre, managing to cobble together or hustle the necessary items – including red velvet curtains and theatre lamps – from other, more famous venues, such as the Haymarket, Lyric and Scala. And so it was here, at the back of a pub with a leaky roof and highly questionable backstage conditions, that the King’s Head Theatre was born. It quickly began to put on some of the most exciting and significant plays of the time.

one of the most cherished and respected fringe spaces in the city – something that has continued despite grave financial burdens; scandalously, the theatre had its arts council grant cut in 1984. The theatre became known and loved as a place where performers could take risks and challenge the conventions of the medium unfettered by commercial pressures and restrictions. The untimely death of Dan Crawford in 2005 marked the passing of a true maverick, who through sheer force of will and good humour created a unique space where actors and their audience came together (sometimes rather squashed and crammed, admittedly) to experience theatre at its purest and most vibrant. Stephanie Sinclaire, Dan’s partner and associate artistic director, has since taken the reins and continued to run the theatre in his absence, but now after 40 years and having

seen countless productions move on to the West End, the King’s Head has decided to shift its focus in a characteristically daring and ambitious new direction. So, then: opera, in a small theatre at the back of a pub - really? The idea may leave many scratching their heads but this is precisely what the King’s Head has embarked on (and probably partly the effect it had in mind). It may seem a bizarre idea, but it’s one that is admired and supported by a powerful team. Illustrious patrons Joanna Lumley, Alan Parker, Tom Stoppard and Jonathan Miller (who will direct at the venue next year) have thrown their weight behind the project, and with Mark Ravenhill bringing his talents as associate director, ‘London’s Little Opera House’ – as the theatre is soon to be widely known – looks set to make some real waves. Bringing a fresh take on a genre unavoidably linked to opulence and grand settings is a daring move – and an exciting one. As one of the venue’s new singers neatly put it, “Opera has died and we need to perform CPR on it.” The King’s Head will showcase new, difficult and classic operas in English translation and with a maximum ticket price of only £15, aiming to attract a new audience to an old and often apparently inaccessible artform. Certainly the pub, with all its colourful history and heritage, will provide a unique setting to experience opera ‘up close and personal’. Look out for a range of exciting new productions over the months to come, including next month’s staging of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Set in Bangkok with a Thai ‘lady-boy’ playing the eponymous heroine, it’s a perfect example of the liberal, liberated, ‘anything goes’ philosophy that continues to make the King’s Head – or London’s Little Opera House – one of the capital’s most precious cultural institutions.  kingsheadtheatre.com 115 Upper Street, London N1 1QN The Barber of Seville is currently running until November 17 and is followed by H.M.S Pinafore from November 17 to until December 8. Madama Butterfly runs December 15 to January 23. 17

THE GAMBLE OF MEDICAL TOURISM

NumerousÊ patientsÊ areÊ emergingÊ fromÊ obesityÊ surgeriesÊ abroadÊ withÊ unsatisfactoryÊ results, health complications or traumatic experiences – we find out why cheap medicalÊ packagesÊ arenÕ tÊ worthÊ comprisingÊ yourÊ healthÊ for

I

n an interview with Vanessa Feltz broadcast earlier this year on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, a senior bariatric surgeon recalled how Feltz’s decision to have gastric band surgery overseas was greeted with dismay by British doctors. Mr David Kerrigan (who has also advised the Government on the NICE obesity guidelines), said “a collective groan” went up among the UK’s leading bariatric (weight loss) clinics when she revealed her gastric band was fitted in Belgium. And it seems Feltz isn’t the only one; in recent years, many patients from the UK have chosen to travel overseas for obesity surgery for reasons including a perceived lower cost, shorter waiting lists, attractive location, and opportunity to combine surgery with a short ‘holiday’. Of course, on the face of it, having surgery in a hot, sunny country for less money seems a much more attractive choice; but it’s important to remember that things can go wrong – and if they do, it’s much harder to manage when patients (or the surgeon they want to re-visit) are overseas. Would you have an unending supply of time and money to return overseas for aftercare, if something went wrong? “The only potential advantage of health tourism is that, on the face of it, surgery in Europe would appear to be a bit cheaper,” says Mr Kesava Mannur, General Surgeon specialising in Bariatric Surgery. “However, once the cost of proper aftercare is added in, the difference between Europe and the UK often amounts to just a few hundred pounds. What really worries me is that people who opt for cut price surgery overseas are often SURGERY GONE WRONG

Other high-profile patients who have travelled abroad for gastric band surgery include Anne Diamond, who, like Vanessa Feltz, had a gastric band fitted in Belgium. She described the result as an “unedifying failure” due to lack of supervision and band adjustments. It later appeared that the band had been put in the wrong place, requiring a second bariatric operation at a private hospital in the UK.

unaware of just how important medically supervised aftercare is. They rarely receive the post-op support that is so critical for a safe and effective outcome. This is particularly vital with gastric bands, which are not a ‘magic cure’, but simply a tool to aid weight loss. Patients need to be shown how to use them properly – and that training needs constant support and reinforcement if they are to get a good, safe result. “Sometimes complications, such as band slippage or erosion, can set in months - or even years - after the operation is performed. If picked up and dealt with promptly, most of these problems can be safely treated by a bariatric surgeon without the risk of losing the band. Do you really want to be hundreds of miles and several hours away from your surgeon if anything goes wrong? “It’s a question of being able to pick up the phone and talk to someone knowledgeable who

can put your mind at rest when you’re not sure that things are going as they should, or get you sorted out quickly without you having to travel for hours to see them if something goes wrong.” Unfortunately, there have been many cases where foreign clinics do not provide any aftercare and although they may tell patients this is a ‘standard’ package, it is vital that aftercare is included, whichever country you are in. It is also not uncommon for British surgeons to treat post-surgery complications in those who would not have been accepted for this type of surgery in the UK. British guidelines have strict criteria for bariatric admissions as weight loss surgeries can be risky. When complications of this nature arise, it is often NHS surgeons or small private clinics who try to correct these ‘mistakes’, but these overstretched medical teams do not always possess the specialist knowledge and training to deal with such cases. The Wellington Hospital is one of the UK’s leading private medical centres, and the bariatric unit has a wealth of experience. Treatments available at The Wellington include the gastric band via keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery and the relatively non-invasive technique of the intra-gastric balloon (which remains inflated to occupy most of the stomach, limiting the space available for food). Dr. Shidrawi acknowledges that these types of surgery are very effective, but ultimately he is keen to emphasize that these are risky procedures; complications are not infrequent and it is always important to seek out the best medical professionals and the highest standard of aftercare to guarantee the desired results.  For more information about bariatric surgery at The Wellington Hospital, call the Enquiry Helpline on 020 7483 5148 or visit thewellingtonhospital.com DID YOU KNOW?

10-15 per cent of gastric band patients will eventually have complications (such as band slippage or erosion) that will require further corrective treatment.

WITNESS THE FITNESS Helen Baron ruminates on life with a Ki Fit Armband

I

immediately liked the sound of the Ki Fit. Always up for trying new tactics in my pursuit of that flightiest of quarry, the ‘hot bod’, this unassuminglooking little gizmo presented an entirely promising proposal: not a run of the (tread) mill pedometer or calorie counter, the Ki Fit armband is a multi-sensored, ‘clinically proven’ medical device that claims to be at the cutting edge of performance monitors. In fact, the Ki Fit technology was originally developed for use with intensive care patients, to ensure they consume the appropriate amount of calories. Sounds big. These weighty scientific credentials are bolstered by another, rather tantalising buzzword: bespoke. The Ki Fit system works by recording a whole bunch of unique data and analysing it using a subscription-based Activity Manager – a repository of personal information that can help you to achieve fitness goals such as losing weight, gaining it (lucky you) or enhancing performance. And it’s this information that’s the real selling point here. It’s all well and good knowing how many steps you take in a day, but how does that relate to the number of calories you – not a hypothetical laboratory model – actually work off? By combining the various measurements taken by the Ki Fit armband – including motion, heat flux and skin temperature (to work out your metabolic rate and thus precisely what you burn) as well as your rate of physical activity and even your sleep efficiency – with the wealth of information already held in the Activity Manager, you get a complex but easy to read analysis of your daily energy use on your computer screen. It’s a simple concept, very well done. Within a day of getting started, I felt better able to set targets and keep an eye on my energy input and output. Unlike the calorie counter on your average treadmill (the one that seems to tot up at a snail’s pace, running off an apple in a painful half hour), the Ki Fit paints a rather more positive picture for those of us unopposed to shedding a pound or two. It shows that it is possible to burn a surprisingly substantial of calories in one

Tried & Tested

day – including while at rest and during sleep – and in so doing, encourages you to want to burn more… and eat less. All so you can influence the shapes thrown by the Activity Manager’s many appealing charts and graphs. For the most detailed results, you can log your consumed calories in the Activity Manager, which taps into the Food Standards Agency database. It’s not exhaustive, so you do have to enter the nutrition information manually at times, but even this can be an interesting exercise. You’ll soon find yourself cutting out outlandish snacks to avoid the task, and the mere fact of having to type in the grams of fat in a portion of Häagen-Dazs (as opposed to just glancing at the label) is pivotal – especially when you see your day’s total shoot up, and your graphs swing wildly off-kilter.You almost expect the armband to be one spoonful short of alarm bell mode. The result of all this in-depth but accessible information and analysis is that the Ki Fit system is like having your own personal trainer: a visible reminder of your goals, plus an ever-present incentive to work harder and to eat more healthily according to those goals. Ultimately, it’s a matter of simple number-crunching: for example, to lose weight you need to use up more calories than you take in. As there are about 3,500 calories in a pound of fat, you lose a pound in weight every time you burn 3,500 more calories than you consume. It follows that if you want to have shed that pound in a week’s time, you have to burn 500 more calories than you consume every day.Whether I already knew this or not, the Ki Fit Activity Manager put it into perspective, helping me to discover a better balance, if you like. If I eat that extra tatty, the dog gets a longer walk.

20 MORE LUNGES AND I CAN EAT THAT DIGESTIVE

So no downside? Well, the device is not cheap. A Ki Fit armband plus threemonth subscription will set you back £194.99, with six months costing £221.51 and a year coming in at £268.51. This figure rises still further if you want the mobile display unit too (which synchronises with the armband, computing up-to-the-minute steps taken and calories burnt for maximum motivation on the go). You might also find yourself thinking, ‘Am I really that person? The kind who slavishly keeps a food diary, sporting an armband like a permanent tattoo?’ And the Ki Fit doesn’t score any fashion points either, unless Velcro is in this winter. After so many years of living according to all kinds of vague ideas about myself and my lifestyle, this up-to-the-minute, accurate information has proven invaluable in shaping a clear way forward. And if you’re willing to put in a modicum of legwork, you can use the armband as part of a self-constructed fitness programme – saving on gym memberships, personal trainers, faddy foods and whatever else we throw our money at in the name of health. In fact, with the myriad of exercise gimmicks out there begging us to trust them, it’s a massive source of comfort to know that the Ki Fit system does exactly what it promises; the question is whether you feel able to make a lifetime’s commitment to it.  kiperformance.co.uk

It all starts with a 12 week goal - you telling us what you want to achieve and your trainer explaining how you’re going to get there. Why 12 weeks? We decided on 12 weeks because it’s a tangible timeframe to achieve life-changing results, but not so far away that you’re going to lose focus. We follow our own unique system of goal setting which has been developed over many years of goal setting, training clients and studying books by the best self help gurus such as Tony Robbins. Our 12 week goal is set using our system called SERVE. This is a reminder to us and to you that Revolution and your trainer are here to serve you at all times! We are there with you all the way on this fun, challenging and potentially lifechanging journey. So what does SERVE mean?

S

is for specific. We make sure that your goal is as specific as possible. For example, we won’t let you just say ‘I want to get a bit fitter’ or ‘I want to lose weight’. We make sure you know exactly how much weight you’ll lose or exactly what time you’ll run that 10km run in. Once a goal is written, something very powerful 24

CA NOV 10 REVOLUTION.indd 24

happens. It’s no longer vague you now have purpose.

E

is for emotion. It’s been said that emotion is 24 times stronger than logic. The best way to think about this is ‘why’. Why do you want to lose weight or achieve whatever it is that you want? You must keep asking yourself why until you arrive at the truth. The importance of this cannot be underestimated. It’s attaching emotion to your goal that will get you out of bed to go for that run, or that will see you make the better nutritional choice.

R

is for realistic. Ok, so we don’t want to dampen your fi re here, but sometimes people can be slightly over ambitious. If it’s been 20 years since you were last at the weight that you’ve set as your 12 week goal, then maybe we need to set something a bit more achievable. It’s really important that you set yourself up for success!

V

is for visualise. We advise that when you get a quiet moment before you go to bed, you visualise how you want to look and think about how you want to feel. Visualise how your friends and work colleagues will respond to the new you. At the start of your 12 week transformation we’ll take your photo. This reality check of where your body is truly at can be incredibly motivating. We’ll also take a photo at the end of your 12 weeks to see the amazing transformation!

E

is for evaluate. It’s really important that we evaluate your progress. One of the best personal trainers of all time, Paul Chek, once said ‘if you’re not assessing you’re guessing’.We take whatever measurements are necessary to assess your progress towards your goals. We will measure you every four weeks so that you and your trainer both know exactly how you’re progressing. www.revolution-pts.co.uk 020 7288 6121

THE 50’S ARE MAKING A COMEBACK

I

t’s a period that fashion has always had a relationship with – the figure-hugging lines, cinched waists and big skirts, the classic vintage look… but we’re seeing the silhouettes of the era even more on the catwalk thanks to the current fixation with American drama, Mad Men. Designers have certainly tapped into the trend with typical ‘50s designs showing up in Marc Jacobs, Prada and Louis Vuitton collections, to name but a few. If you haven’t seen the show (really?), it’s about the advertising industry in 1960s Manhattan and the costumes certainly reflect the slick ads. The Mad Men ladies are always immaculately turned out – no signs of crow’s feet or limp hair despite the incessant smoking! It seems particularly relevant to talk about retro dresses at this time of year; with our attentions turning to indoor cultural activities and the lead-in to Christmas giving rise to a run of exciting theatre, ballet and music productions, there is plenty of opportunity to debut new fancy frocks in rather more dramatic surroundings! The peplum-skirt, which is also seeing some serious runway action, is a slightly more toned down, every-day approach to the ‘50s look and is therefore super easy to wear. why not try it with our Dress of the Month – the Peplum, from Tofu clothing label. What’s more it’s on sale now for £33…so what are you waiting for? FOOD REVOLUTION The

Isabella Uhlig reports on the latest trend, the Supper Club, and looks at the rising popularity of good food on-the-go...

R

evolution is in the air. The latter half of this decade has surely been one of the most exciting times for food lovers. We seem to have an insatiable appetite for all things new, and our food culture is easily rivalling the fashion industry with its flurrying turnover rate of new places to eat and new ways in which to buy food. With more choice than ever before, far from seeing a deterioration of quality, there has been a renewed focus on seasonal, home-grown produce. Supper Clubs have been one of the most talked about developments of recent years. And then there’s the latest topic on everyone’s lips, gourmet food on-thego. Innovation in food seems to be happening everywhere, except the place we most expect it most; the restaurant kitchen.

Msmarmitelover (her blog name comes from her penchant for Marmite) is a pioneer of the Supper Club movement. For the past three years she has regularly transformed her living room into The Underground Restaurant. It was in 2000, whilst in Cuba, that Msmarmitelover had her first taste of a supper club when she visited a paladare. Inspired to recreate the same setup in her North London home, she now also runs cookery demonstrations and even hosts a farmer’s market. Her blog, very patriotically named The English Can Cook, has a devoted following. Her Supper Clubs for November include a Russian Revolutionary Dinner and a Mongolian and Tibetan themed menu which has been called The Highgate Yurt. The names alone give a sense of how wonderfully inventive

Msmarmitelover’s food is, always with a dash of humour. Humble the name may be, but Street Kitchen’s take-away food is a far cry from the typical fare that comes in those suspect white polystyrene boxes. Here is a chance to sample food from world-class chefs at affordable prices. Just like Msmarmitelover, Street Kitchen’s food is a celebration of UK produce, all of which is sourced from local farms and producers. The menu for October was a traditional affair with Jersusalem artichoke soup, hot smoked salmon with beetroot and braised beef with celeriac mash. Street Kitchen is headed by Jun Tanaka and Mark Jankel who both have seriously impressive CVs that include stints at Michelin starred restaurants Le Gavroche and The Square. It seems fitting that Street Kitchen pitched up

at Covent Garden and Old Spitafields Market, locations rich in food heritage, as it looks set to form the next chapter of our wonderfully varied food culture. Of course what has spearheaded the rise in an astonishing choice of eateries is the web. Who knew that technology and food would make such a great pairing? A much closer relationship between chef and customer has since developed. Street Kitchen use Twitter to inform customers of their location and it is the chefs themselves who are feeding their customers. A quick survey of their Twitter feed reveals the wonderful rapport with their customers, and not a dud review in sight! Instead there’s a clamouring for The Street Kitchen to return asap. The mobile aspect of Street Kitchen seems to be a wider symbol of the openness to innovation that characterises our food culture. Msmarmitelover enjoys a similar relationship with her followers. Her blog reads more like a journal as she takes you on her food odyssey, mixing in personal anecdotes. And of course, there must be few more personal settings for dinner than someone’s living room. Msmarmitelover gets customers to book their table for The Underground Restaurant through wegottickets.com. Like booking for a gig, this brings a touch of rock n’ roll to proceedings. It’s not surprising to learn that she started working as a photographer for NME as a teenager. Our burgeoning food scene somehow fi nds room to accommodate every new development. We wait in anticipation for what happens next. What is for certain, though, is that our food culture really is leading the way in versatility and diversification.  To follow Msmarmitelover’s food blog and to find out about upcoming dates for The Underground Restaurant visit msmarmitelover.blogspot.com To find out where The Street Kitchen will be located next visit streetkitchen.co.uk or @streetkitchen on Twitter. 35

THE UNDERGROUND RESTAURANT’S PEARS POACHED IN RED WINE FROM MSMARMITELOVER

Msmarmitelover says: ‘In my garden there is a huge pear tree, and the fruit is dropping now it’s ripe. This is a perfect autumn dessert.’ Preparation time: 5 mins Cooking time 40 mins Serves four INGREDIENTS

1 bottle of red wine 1 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 200g of sugar 4 pears, ripe but not too soft, peeled, kept whole with stem intact

METHOD

Put all of the ingredients into a small pan, the pears should be covered more or less by the wine. Poach the pears, with the lid on, on a medium heat for around 30 minutes. Then carefully remove the pears, set aside and reduce the liquid by half so that it becomes a rich syrup. Pour the syrup over the pears and accompany with a spoonful of creme fraiche. *If you have any syrup left over use it as a cocktail base with cava for a seasonal aperitif! 36

he Real Greek aim to provide customers with a quality Mediterranean dining experience alongside exceptional service in a relaxed atmosphere. Founded in 1999 by celebrity chef, Theodore Kyriakou, and his team, the first restaurant opened in Hoxton to critical acclaim winning “Best New London Restaurant”. The openings continued across London with Bankside (2004), Marylebone (2005), Covent Garden (2006), Westfield (2008) and Spitalfields (2008). Interestingly, The Real Greek has become the fi rst restaurant group in the UK to include a calorie count on every single menu item including the drinks. The company has been working closely with the FSA (Food Standards Agency) and is the only restaurant chain currently offering real transparency in their nutritional information. Greek food is naturally nutritious, using olive oil rather than saturated animal fat, and featuring grilled fish and meat strongly, rather than stodgy carbohydrates, so it’s a smart move from a company who are clearly investing in healthy eating. Healthy menu additions are available for those looking for good cooking but a less calorific meal. ALMEIDA FRENCH RESTAURANT & WINE BAR 30 Almeida Street N1 1AD 020 7354 4777 French

RESTAURANT REVIEW: LE BOUCHON BRETON, E1

VIVE LA FRANCE Isabella Uhlig samples the delights of the well-received French Brasserie in redeveloped Spitalfields market

L

e Bouchon Breton certainly know how to celebrate. To mark their two-year anniversary they have devised a spectacular five course menu which venerates all the hallmarks of French cooking. But is it any good? Too often our French restaurants are nothing more than crude imitations of the real thing. But if the general consensus is that the sauces at a good French restaurant will stand up to scrutiny, we are pleased to report that Le Bouchon Breton is operating at a lip-smackingly high standard. It’s only right to start by discuss the evening’s main event: cote de boeuf. This was cut from the bone at the table, a special touch that added to the atmosphere and excitement. The meat had been cooked to perfection: beautifully pink in the middle and very flavoursome. The chips were heavenly too, crunchy on the outside and fluffy as clouds within. The creamy béarnaise sauce was the perfect consistency, not too rich, and we were highly tempted to drench everything else we ordered in it. The meal commenced with a homemade terrine de foie gras which was a real treat for the senses. Not only did it look like a work of art, beautifully garnished, but it had the same smoothness as butter with a slight peppery kick that tickled the tongue. The relish was the perfect accompaniment too.Three varieties of oysters came next:

Cassostrea, Maldon and Fine de Claire. The charismatic maitre d’,Yoann - who made our eyelids flutter on several occasions with his easy French charm - reached wonderfully poetic heights introducing this course. “Eating oysters,” he said, “is like kissing the ocean on the lips.” Indeed. A shallot vignette was again just right for the dish, enhancing the wonderful, fresh, salty flavour of the oysters without overpowering them.Yoann’s passion for the food was obvious, as was his knowledge of French cuisine. The care and enthusiasm he took to explain our dishes made the meal even more memorable.

The frogs’ legs and snails - which, I won’t lie, I approached with some trepidation - were smothered with a wonderfully rich garlic and parsley butter. They turned out to be as tender and succulent as slow-roast chicken; perhaps, dare I say it, more so.We wolfed them down gratefully and began to feel a little full.Yoann sensed our need for a breather

and declared a time out - which proved to be the perfect opportunity to admire the architectural delights of Old Spitalfields Market, just outside the window. Le Bouchon Breton definitely benefits from its first floor location, allowing you to get that much closer to the building’s beautiful period beams (perhaps the only tell-tale sign that we weren’t dining on the banks of the River Seine). That said, the general décor, which bears many of the hallmarks of the traditional French brasserie, with chequered tiling and café curtains, is extremely well-judged. It’s some feat that this restaurant, which isn’t short on square footage, manages to retain an intimate ambiance. Unsurprisingly, many couples were dining there on the night of our visit. Another pulling factor has to be the wine list: here they take the oenophile’s fancy very seriously indeed. As soon as you enter, it’s impossible not to spot the towering wine cabinet, displaying its precious cargo of vintage bottles like glistening trophies. The house sommelier treated us to four different wines of which the most memorable was the first, a muscadet whose sweetness was a perfect complement to the foie gras, each flavour seeming to enrich the other.A bar runs the length of the restaurant too: perfect for a pre-meal drink. The final flourish was the cheese course. We were presented with a wonderful selection of close to twenty cheeses to choose from - plumping for (among others!) a camembert and bleu de terremignon.Yoann cut each cheese with a different knife, explaining that the slightest contamination from one could ruin another... yet more of that famous French attention to detail coming into play. In the end, our favourite fromage was a tangy goat’s cheese which, while not too overpowering, retained a pleasing pungency. Our night at Le Bouchon Breton - in my memory, a refined orgy of gourmet gluttony and high class indulgence confirmed to us the old wisdom that French cooking is simply unsurpassable. It also confirmed that it is an art this restaurant does very well indeed. Don’t come to Le Bouchon Breton looking for a convenient imitation of real French cuisine - this is very much the real deal. Cause for celebration indeed.  lebouchon.co.uk Bouchon Breton, 8 Horner Square, London E1 6EW 08000 191704

THE GOOD GUIDE: Guiden Go through the looking glass with a trip to Guiden, the most magical interiors experience in N1

THROUGH THE WARDROBE My first visit to Guiden reminded me less of previous trips to furniture stores and more of The Lion, the Witch and theWardrobe. Turning off the grey suburban pavement of a quiet Islington backstreet, stepping through a shopfront doorway sandwiched between imposing period houses, I felt I’d stumbled across a magical treasure trove, a quirky hidden world piled high with furniture that possessed an almost human charisma. To say Guiden is enchanting hardly does it justice. Fortunately, I was here to meet the store’s owner, Martin Puckett, with a view to discovering how this spell was cast. Like all the best magicians, though, Martin is reticent when it comes to explaining his secrets. He becomes much more animated, however, when you begin to ask him why he sells antiques, rather than how. Martin fell into antiques dealing at a young age, declaring his intentions at the tender age of seven. When the time came to make good on his claim, he decided to do so alone and independently as a result of his deeply

Interiors

personal attachment to the work. He learned the ropes by antiques dealing, building his experience and expertise and eventually establishing Guiden on N1’s Southgate Rd two years ago. MID CENTURY MODERN Guiden’s focus is on hand-crafted wooden furniture in the mid-century modern style – though I get the impression he prefers not to limit himself to any particular era, especially with plans to expand in the near future. As if in illustration of the breadth of his passion, I find Martin eating his lunch beside an Edwardian mahogany plant stand and surrounded by various other pieces dating back as far as 1847 – including a beautiful oak footstool from the earliest days of the 20th century. Still, his enthusiasm for the midcentury modern style is clear from the first, and much of Guiden’s current stock dates from 1950s Denmark. What was it about those ‘50s Danes, I wonder aloud, that makes their furniture so desirable today? “It is very fashionable right now,” Martin tells me. “En vogue, if you like. It was the last era of hand-

crafted, high quality furniture. There are enough pieces to create a sufficient market and they are out of memory for the generation that is buying it.” His explanation only intrigues me more. Why should Denmark have developed the style, and not (for example) another Scandinavian country? Martin explains that the Danes’ secret weapon was the pride they took in their output: “Danish workmanship especially was highly regarded in Europe; so much so that it led to English companies emulating it with less expensive copies.” Swedish design, meanwhile, was conventionally practical and affordable – while Norwegian design focused on more traditional woodworking. But it was actually a Finn who kick-started the Danes’ golden age: celebrated architect Alvar Aalto (1898 –1976) worked with moulded plywood in shapes that were influenced by the Modernist use of tubular metal. His designs made use of the light-colored birch native to Finland, and it would appear that the Danes took his style of modernist, minimal design to their hearts. Drawing on the principles of ‘organic 43

architecture’ as pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright, as well on aesthetic traits spearheaded by the International and Bauhaus architecture movements, the Danes evolved furniture design in the 20th century to its aesthetic peak… and then production tailed off. Why? Martin’s answer is instant and depressingly abrupt: “Ikea.” The ensuing silence is broken as Martin stops to point out a cabinet behind me. “These pieces come in two kinds of wood – Brazilian rosewood and Indonesian teak,” he says. The cabinet in question is a fine example of the former, now an endangered species: you could never reproduce it. It’s a telling reminder of how rare – and valuable – antique workmanship can be.

you might expect.Yes, there is art by Alex Noble on the walls of the store; and yes, Martin’s knowledge of and enthusiasm for his collection betrays the importance he attaches to his work. But venture into his upstairs showroom and the full measure of his creativity becomes apparent.

balance, for making order out of chaos. It’s certainly about as inspiring a way to view and purchase furniture as I can imagine. As Martin leads me into his showroom’s new extension he seems as enamoured of the location as a great painter. ‘It’s such a great space,’ he enthuses, ‘and there is such amazing natural light.’ While he speaks, my eye falls upon a 220year old plaster rendering of Jesus Christ on the cross, fully restored and resplendent in 24-carat gold leaf. Suspended from the whitewashed wall before several rows of antique chairs, the piece gives this once empty warehouse the ISLINGTON IS HOME TO feeling of a holy “A COMMUNITY OF STREET place. TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE PLAY, “THIS IS HOW IT GOES?” I chose to do the play because it’s Neil Labute; I think he’s a genius. His writing usually involves a twist, a good deal of controversy and emotion. “This Is How It Goes”, touches on issues such as racism, abuse, adultery, betrayal…when I read the script I really questioned myself, so there’s scope to get stuck in and I hope it raises questions in the audience also. HAS IT BEEN A CHALLENGE TO ‘EXPERIENCE’ THIS RANGE OF EMOTIONS ON STAGE? It has been yes…the emotions change quite rapidly from scene to scene; I go from being happy and smiley to getting beaten up. I’ve found I get a tension head-ache at the end of each show! DID YOU HAVE TO PREPARE FOR THE ROLE AT ALL? Well, I didn’t so much research the part…but the cast had a long rehearsal period that was helpful. We had three weeks to go through everything, we read through the play a few times before we even started on it. The director [Seb Billings] worked with us oneon-one, especially if there were scenes any of us were struggling with.

GEMMA GETS READY TO GO ON STAGE

HAVE YOU DONE MUCH THEATRE WORK BEFORE? I played Elaine in “Calendar Girls” at the Noel Coward Theatre and followed that with the UK tour. Most people start with fringe and I’ve done things the opposite way round. “Calendar Girls” opened to 2,000 people every night, but I so wanted to do fringe and it’s a different experience altogether. I mean on the West End you have a dresser and a vast dressing room; here I’m sharing the room with two boys…so you can imagine the states I’ve seen! I love it though; I’m treading the boards as they say, and I get on with all the crew so it’s been a tremendous experience. DO YOU PREFER WORKING IN THEATRE TO TV? Out of the two, I probably do prefer TV and film as with those mediums you get to ‘see’ the finished product. There’s not quite so much pressure, because obviously you can cut, edit and re-take etc. I also like mixing up scenes…with theatre you’re going through the same motions…with “Calendar Girls”, we did 108 shows so by the end of it I knew everyones’ lines! IS IT SAD WHEN A PRODUCTION COMES TO AN END? Yeah! You become like a family you spend so much time together! In this job though, everyone’s moving on to different things. You get close to people for a short period and then

you drift off. I think its important to keep your real friends close; I have four girlfriends from back home in Manchester and I see them every week; their friendship base is so important to me because in this industry, people do come and go. DO YOU STAY IN TOUCH WITH ANY OF THE CAST OF HOLLYOAKS? I do. In fact, while I’ve been down here, I’ve been staying with Mikyla Dodd who played Chloe. I still speak to Sarah Dunn [Mandy] and Marcus Patrick [Ben] who came to see me in the play and Sarah Baxendale who played my sister, Ellie, came to the show this week! HAVE THERE BEEN ANY DAILY RITUALS YOU’VE PERFORMED TO HELP JUST BEFORE YOU GO ON STAGE…IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT WOULD YOU NORMALLY BE DOING RIGHT NOW? We’ve been hitting each other on the back more recently; the first few shows we all put our hands in a circle but we stopped doing that as we got more comfortable…and I’m relieved the back-cracking has stopped now. FINALLY, YOU’VE BEEN BASED IN ISLINGTON FOR OVER A MONTH NOW – ANY HIGHLIGHTS…DO YOU LOVE IT YET? I love Upper Street! I’ve been getting omelettes at Fig & Olive – they’re my favourite – we’ve all been going for omelettes so much that they gave us a free cake each last time we were in.

PIC BY DAN WILLIAMS

Known most widely for her role as Lisa Hunter in Hollyoaks, and having recently performed on the West End stage for Tim Firth’s “Calendar Girls”, when we heard that Gemma Atkinson was starring in a Neil LaBute production at the King’s Head theatre in Islington, we couldn’t help but take a sneak peek backstage.

with the band

Since their inception in 2004, Tunng have released three albums and numerous singles. 2010 saw the release of their fourth. Local to the area for the most part (some of the band reside outside of London), rehearsing and recording in Old St, they will be curating and playing a special show at Kentish Town Forum this month. I caught up with band mates Mike and Becky before they shot off to Bestival, to get the lowdown on their latest output, what’s influencing them right now and what makes them Tunng.

‘A

nd then we saw Land’ has so far taken them on mini-tours to Europe and Brazil. They have a big fan base in France and Holland and most recently, Poland. It marks something of a new direction for them – following the departure of one member – with more ‘pop’ sounding songs and more of Becky’s vocal. The new album seems very much like music of a prettier, more natural place. There’s a big sense of the shanty, the lilting sea-song kind of vibe, in some of the songs too (not surprising, given the album title). You’d expect the band to live near the sea. Is your style a kind of response to the city? Do you escape through your music? Maybe it’s ‘exile music’, the sound of a band longing

to return to the places of their inspiration? M: I think it could be an escape, yes. A lot of our records are like that. I write in a basement studio in London. The album does I guess, touch on adventures and is a metaphor for the challenges of recording the album. B: We did a collaborative project with a Malian band called Tinariwen. That’s worked its way into our press release as being that we took a ten- day voyage to Malia…that didn’t actually happen… they came over here and we did a session for Radio 3, followed by a ten-show tour where we played each other’s songs. Is it a coming-of-age album? B: There was a big change for us because Sam [Genders, co-founder of the band] left; we had to work out the new dynamic; although we were used to his absence – he

wasn’t around during the first five years, he didn’t always play live – but it was a new experience writing without him. M: I think were a little adrift. If anything, the Tinariwen experience brought us closer together; it revealed more ideas to us as a band. If its not coming of age, it definitely feels joyful. Becky, your vocal is more prominent on the album; was that exciting? B: Totally. For me this record has been really important. We had a great time recording the vocals; we recorded everything once and Mike convinced me to re-record. It took quite a bit of persuading – I’m a bit lazy – but we did and I’ve so enjoyed playing the material live also. Sometimes I find the going away part of the band difficult, but I have thoroughly enjoyed touring it and playing a bigger part.

COVER ARTWORK FOR TUUNG’S NEW ALBUM ‘….AND THEN WE SAW LAND’

In the song ‘Sashimi,’ the energy ups somewhat, creating a quirky folkpop hybrid with ‘80s synths etc. It’s like a bolder, more rousing take on the music Tunng is generally known for. Is this a hint as to where the band might head in future? B: We want a hit! A number one… M: I think it might go back the other way. I don’t know, this was the first song written for the album and I wanted to write something big. Our live shows are bigger and more evocative than our records, so I think we wanted to reflect that. There were particular drums that I wanted to use and we’ve never really used electric guitar before.

out actually; the last three albums were recorded in Coronet Street, off Hoxton Square. Next door there’s another studio as well with the biggest collection of analogue synths and moogs. It might even be the biggest collection in England, but we got to use some of those instruments on the album. Three of the tracks were recorded in an abandoned school using a chorus of fellow musicians and drinking buddies. It was quite something to orchestrate, conducting without headphones and the rain drumming on the roof was picking up and sounded like some 70’s twisted reverb. B: We don’t rehearse very much. We’ve done things a little back to front in the sense that we record and then think about how it’s going to play out live. We find things out sometimes when we’re playing; quite often you’ll experience a magical moment when everything comes together. We’ve seen a lot of bands flirt with psychedelic imagery and sounds over the last couple of years, with varying results. But the latest album - and even its artwork, the kaleidoscopic seahorses etc - seem to touch on a subtler and more sincere form of psychedelia than a

THERE IS A LOT GOING ON ON STAGE; KEYS AND SYNTHS AND MARTIN HAS HIS SEASHELLS AND TOENAILS…

M: Becky always had more of a role in the live performances than on recordings. I mean live she’s often centre stage. Does your material translate well live; I get the impression you are more of a live band. M: I think our more recent are some of the best shows we’ve ever done. We have a drummer now-we never used to have that. There is a lot going on on stage; keys and synths and Martin has his seashells and toenails… Toe-nails? Surely they don’t really… make a noise? B: Oh, they’re bear toenails not human ones. M: That would be more…crunchy And smelly? B: Yeah, I’ve never smelt the bear claws

I think there are probably people who love our first records, that don’t get this at all. But by the same token, fans have joined us and don’t like the earlier stuff so between the four hopefully we’re being progressive and there’s something for everyone. Is the song-writing process and direction difficult there being so many of you in the band (Tunng has operated a little like a collective in the past)? M: There were times on this record where I thought…too many cooks. You do have to deal with differing opinions over the same tune, and when I’m producing I try to keep everyone happy. There were a few tunes that didn’t make it. B: It’s true that you come to an agreement about things but I don’t feel that any of my inclinations were compromised. Where was the album recorded? Some of you live outside of London, is it difficult to rehearse? M: In Old Street. We’ve just moved

lot of your peers. Tunng have never been strangers to experimental instrumentation and hugely detailed songs full of colour and texture. Do you feel that you have led the times somewhat - that you have inspired others to follow in your footsteps (even if not always successfully)? M: I would definitely say that people have been influenced by us. We weren’t aware really of what others were doing – we’ve been compared to Four Tet, The Memory Band, Caribou, but of course, we’ve in turn been inspired. I think there’s a familiarity with other forms of music within ours that people respond to but that we have a unique take on it. I’ve heard that Laura Marling is a fan. EMBERS: AN EVENING WITH TUNNG AND FRIENDS takes place at HMV Forum on Saturday November 6th. 51

LOCAL PROFILE WithÊ KateÊ TaylorÊ of

PIC BY COLIN STREATER STUDIO@COLINSTREATER.COM

How long has Islington Properties been going? We established Islington Properties in 2006 and opened our first shop on Upper Street in August 2009, which was the next natural step in our development. It’s been a very exciting year for us. What services to do you offer? We are a local boutique estate agency and block management business. From our shop on Upper Street, opposite St Mary’s church, we offer lettings, sales and individual property management. From our office on White Lion Street, opposite Angel tube station, we run our block management business. We manage around 40 local developments and blocks of flats, meaning that we know the local market very well. What is the property market in the local area like at the moment? The demand for

sales and lettings is high but supply is low which is gradually pushing prices up. We are finding that most existing tenants are choosing to renew rather than move to new properties. Are house prices going down or are we looking at a swift recovery from the recession; do you have any advice for buyers and sellers in the current economic climate? House prices in the local area have been relatively stable recently – we benefit from being so close to the City, so are insulated to some extent from the wider London market. We do not think that the recovery will be swift but we are hopeful that there will be steady improvement through 2011. We think that confidence is the first thing that needs to recover, which will then feed through into the property market generally.

Any tips for first-time buyers? Keep looking, though patience is key at the moment. We’re hoping that the government will address the issues that first time buyers are faced with in respect of high stamp duty on properties above £250k in the next budget. And as banks are recovering, hopefully finance will be more widely available, which should also benefit first time buyers. What makes Islington such a great place to live? Islington has a vibrant, village atmosphere. It offers most of the facilities and services that you could get in central London, coupled with local, boutique shops and restaurants. It has excellent transport links to both The City and West, large numbers of Victorian and Georgian properties and the highest concentration of garden

squares in London, all of which make it a very special place to live and an area that holds its value even in a declining market. Why did you start the business from Islington? I, and many of our team, live locally within walking distance of the office. That local knowledge and feel really makes Islington Properties stand out and attracts customers to us. We work in an area that we all know really well, which translates into all the services that we offer. We are corporate in the background but have a local, Islington feel in the foreground. Many of our referrals come from our contacts and background in the local area. 111 Upper Street, N1 1QN 020 7812 0480 islingtonproperties.com

PROPERTYNEWS FELICITY J LORD CHIEF EXECUTIVE PAUL SMITH CHECKS OUT THE NEW APP.

FJ LORD FELICITY J LORD LAUNCHES IPHONE APP

A new iPhone and iPad App from Felicity J Lord is set to give househunters a unique tool when searching for a new property in London.

The App from Felicity J Lord, part of the UK’s largest independent estate agency group, helps customers easily locate homes for sale or rent in London. Launched on October 1, it also provides information on properties recently sold in the area, including the selling price and date of sale. Other features include floorplans, saved searches, downloadable property brochures, maps and directions and local facts. Chief Executive, Paul Smith said: “Industry analysts predict that mobile phones will overtake computers by 2013 as information tools, so it’s vital that agencies move with the times and give customers the tools they are looking for. Our new App will streamline the process for househunters, all at their fingertips.” The Felicity J Lord App can now be downloaded, similar technology will be launched for Blackberries and Androids in November.

WINKWORTH

WINKWORTH LAUNCHES COMPETITION FOR BRITAIN’S BEST HOME RENOVATION

Winkworth, in association with Primelocation.com, The Mail on Sunday and British Institute of Interior Design, has launched a competition looking for Britain’s Best Home Renovation. The winning renovation will be selected by a panel of interior design experts and the winner will be awarded a cash prize of £5,000. Celebrating the nation’s home renovations, the competition was launched to recognise the creativity and passion that goes into doing up our homes - whether it’s giving lounges a perk-up or a big-budget house refresh steered by a professional interior design. Amber Rampley, Winkworth Marketing Director, explains: “The judges will be looking out for breadth of vision and searching for a very special home renovation project that’s gone that extra mile creatively.” The competition is now open for entries from anyone who has done up their home, in the last 12 months – the renovation must have been completed between September 1st 2009 and 30th September 2010 within property owned by anyone entering the competition.

Each entrant will be asked to submit a short ‘pitch’ of between 300 and 500 words, details of the property and its address, and before and after pictures. The closing date for entry is 5th November 2010. All entries to the competition will be judged in the first instance by a panel of interior design experts including representatives from the British Institute of Interior Design, after which a short list of up to ten properties will be visited by judges and a winner announced. Winkworth, synonymous with the best of British property for 175 years, is the leading franchisor of real estate agencies. See winkworth.co.uk for information on how to enter the competition. 71

ASK THE EXPERT Hema Anand from Colman Coyle, gives her expert advice on all your legal property questions I live in a block of flats, which contains 5 flats. The other 4 flat owners have decided to buy the freehold of the block and have served a Notice on the landlord to buy the freehold but at no stage have they asked me, whether or not I would like to participate. Can they do this? You do not say in your question what Notice it is that the owners of the other flats have served upon the landlord. I assume that the other owners have decided to enfranchise, that is force the landlord to sell the freehold interest of the block of flats to them. Provided they meet the criteria set by the law leaseholders can progress a claim to enfranchise often without consulting all of the leaseholders and owners in the building. As a result, many actions are progressed and unfairly exclude some of the leaseholders. Going forward, it is entirely at the discretion of the leaseholders who are participating in the action, if to decide whether or not they are happy for you to come on board, and if so, on what terms. This situation is something that needs to be addressed but unfortunately the law that requires leaseholders to be given the opportunity to come on board in an enfranchisement action is not yet in force and it is not clear at this stage as to whether it ever will be. I want to carry out some alterations to my flat. Will I need the freeholder’s permission? This will depend on what your lease says. Each lease is drafted differently but most leases will say that a lessee can make alterations to the flat with the freeholders’ consent, such consent not to be unreasonably withheld. Even if a lease doesn’t state that the freeholders’ consent can’t be unreasonably withheld, it is actually implied by statute. Some leases also make the distinction between structural and non structural alterations so you may not actually need permission depending on what you want to do. Occasionally, leases include a strict prohibition against carrying out alterations but this is quite rare. Some freeholders will simply consent to alterations in a letter but others will insist on a formal Licence for Alterations being drawn up which will have to be done at the cost of the lessee. These more formal licences tend to be used in large mansion blocks rather than a converted a property but it will depend on the freeholders’ individual approach. You should also bear in mind that you may need building regulation approval for the work and you may also need planning consent particularly if the property is listed.
