EDITOR’S LETTER

his being my first editor’s letter, I suppose it’s only natural that I begin by admitting I’m thrilled to bits at the prospect of life with The City and Angel. Having celebrated its first birthday this summer, the magazine seems to have hit its stride and I’m glad to join at such an exciting time, as we make the transition from fledgling publication to your premier local lifestyle guide. And what better area to serve than Islington? We are the lucky occupants of a unique position in London’s colourful cultural tapestry. Islington combines the energy and bustle of the city with a strong and distinct sense of community, and although I’m already a big fan of the area, I can’t wait to find out what it’s all about from an editor’s point of view. Already, planning and putting together my first issue has reinforced my interest in and enthusiasm for the local area - and that enthusiasm is only heightened by the fact that I get to share every experience and discovery with you. You might see some of this spirit coming through in our pieces this month - and ‘spirit’ is the right word, because one of my first moves has been to embark on a fright-fest-cumhistory-lesson by way of a London Ghost Tour (p16 fantastic and highly recommended). I also dropped in on a Step ‘n’ Tone class courtesy of SequinPark gym for women (p26) and interviewed actor, comedian and Islington resident Mat Horne (p12) about everything from Gavin and Stacey to herons. I’m also very proud to share with you our lingerie fashion shoot (p34), featuring underwear from Bordello and jewellery from Krausz Design, all presented in deliciously Hitchcockian style. A round-up of what Islington Council is doing for the borough… COUNTERFEIT CLOTHING WILL HELP FAMILIES IN ISLINGTON

Fake designer clothing seized in Islington has been given to a charity that supports disadvantaged people. Brand new counterfeits of top-end brands - worth more than £500,000 if genuine - were seized during enforcement by Islington Council’s trading standards team. Legal action over the fakes, which included brands such as Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Victoria Beckham, has now ended and instead of being thrown out the clothes have been put to good use with a charity which provides ethical solutions for counterfeit clothing. Volunteers from the charity will remove the fake logos so the clothes can be given away to people in need. Some will be brought back to Islington, and others given away across Britain and overseas.

FOOD WASTE RECYCLING COMES TO THOUSANDS ON ISLINGTON’S ESTATES Thousands more residents on Islington’s estates will soon be able to recycle their food waste instead of sending it to landfill. Households are being given small brown kitchen caddies with cornstarch liners to collect their old teabags, vegetable peelings, scraps and other waste food. When the bags are full, residents can tie them and put them into larger brown bins on estates for collection. The new scheme will reach around 10,000 homes. Recycling food waste helps cut odour and mess in household rubbish bins, reduces expensive landfill bills for taxpayers and produces compost – which is then reused in Islington’s parks. It even helps to combat climate change, by cutting methane emissions produced by rotting food in landfill sites. Councillor Paul Smith, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “This brings food waste recycling to thousands of Islington’s residents who have not been offered this chance in the past. It’s easy, convenient, and as well as helping the environment and making compost for Islington’s parks, it should help keep household bins cleaner. I’m very pleased that so many more people on our estates will now be able to recycle food waste, a service which many other residents already enjoy.” Among the first estates to benefit will be Quaker Court, New Orleans, Hornsey Road Baths, Wedmore Street and Upper Hilldrop. Food waste that can be recycled includes fruit and vegetables; meat and fish (whether raw or cooked – but not bones and carcasses); dairy products; bread, cakes and pastries; rice, pasta and beans; and old tea bags and coffee grounds. The first new bins were installed in August with the last due to be in place by March 2011.

f you’re of the mind to do a little celeb-spotting, one of Britain’s hottest young actorsslash-comedians-slash-DJs would probably be a prime target. But where to find such prey? Most of us would head for the traditional haunts of the trendy and well-connected: members bars, exclusive nightclubs, film sets and possibly (depending on their reputation) the occasional drying-out clinic. Whatever the list of locations in the average star-spotter’s mental notebook, it’s probably safe to say the heronry in Regent’s Park isn’t one of them. Which is just one of the things that marks Islington resident Mat Horne out as a star with a difference. Right from the start I had the impression that, although Horne might like to party and seems to know all the right people, he’s unassuming really: a man who knows what he likes but probably doesn’t much like talking about it. But I’d spotted him in the VIP area at Reading Festival back in August and thought music might be a good place to start – Horne is often papped with music stars, presents at music award shows, has starred in a music video and is a keen DJ. So has he been to many music festivals this year? “Ooft, a fair few, I jumped on the Maccabees’ tour bus as they’re good friends and did Leeds and Reading. I did Glastonbury, Wireless and Bestival. I’m not mad on festivals, but the music is important to me.” It was the Maccabees’ single No Kind Words that saw Horne starring in a music video back in 2009, and his enthusiasm for the collaboration is still clear: “Orlando [the band’s frontman) is a wonderful multi-faceted artist. He came up with the treatment and asked me to be in it after I’d been hassling him for ages to be in one of his videos – he just gave in eventually!” It’s not just close friends that are currently on rotation on Mat’s ipod though, and he goes on to tell me of his love for bands such as No Age, Sleigh Bells, Kisses, Zola Jesus, Delorean and Here We Go Magic. When he speaks of seeing Swedish electronic artist Fever Ray live recently, his excitement is evident – he pronounces the show ‘unreal’. It’s this knowledge of and passion for

new music that serves Horne so well in his DJing pursuits: he currently runs a highly successful club night called ‘Session’, which takes place every third Saturday of the month at The Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch. In fact, the night has proven such a hit that Horne has been invited to take it on the road, visiting cities across the country and showcasing the bands and DJs closest to his heart. I put it to him that his musical interests must have influenced his decision to act in BBC2’s Worried About the Boy, a one-off drama about the lives and loves of ‘80s pop legends Culture Club which aired back in May. Cast as the band’s drummer Jon Moss, Horne was delighted to be involved in the production. “This was a script I simply had to do when I read it. I’d always wanted to play someone real and because it was musicrelated, I wanted to do it so much. It was received really well and I’m very proud of it.” But these are recent triumphs – Horne first appeared on our screens in The Catherine Tate Show, most famously as the patient grandson to Tate’s vulgar Nana. Tate had seen Mat’s comedy performance at the 2000 Edinburgh Festival and was so impressed she personally invited him to take the role. The show’s huge success then led to numerous other opportunities for Horne, including

playing the character of Ben in the hit Channel Four series Teachers and, eventually, the role for which he is best known today: Gavin in the BBC’s Gavin and Stacey. The Gavin and Stacey story hardly needs to be retold: from humble beginnings, the show went to amass a huge cult following before making the jump to mainstream success. Suddenly Horne, alongside co-star and the show’s co-creator James Corden (who plays Smithy), was a household name. What’s more, the pair soon followed the sitcom with their own well-received sketch show, Horne & Corden. Still, Horne doesn’t think of them as ‘a comic duo per se’, though he points out that they get along great and are good friends. They must be: they’ve also worked on presenting jobs together (Big Brother’s Big Mouth for one) and even a feature film, 2009’s comedyhorror Lesbian Vampire Killers. At the age of 31, Horne’s list of achievements is already impressive, and I wonder how he feels about his work, which is nothing if not diverse. Does he see a discernible difference between acting and comedy? “To me there is no difference whatsoever,” he muses, though I venture that comedy surely takes a special kind of confidence, and that to do stand-up you have to be able to write as well as perform. How did he get into it? “I was writing sketches with a friend at university and we did a sketch show that went well, but didn’t feel it would take us anywhere. We decided to do a five minute open spot at a local comedy club. It was packed and a few other promoters were in. We absolutely stormed it and that was it from there. Five years of stand up ensued. I was 21 when I started it and didn’t know what I was doing!” 13

I detect an uncommon modesty at play, but Horne seems more animated when talking about the work of others. He loves Jack Dee, who ‘never fails to make me laugh’. Lee Mack is a man ‘with funny bones’. Modern Family is, according to Mat, the best comedy around at the moment, and Arrested Development is his favourite comedy of all time – though he grew up on Laurel & Hardy. He also likes to watch Dragon’s Den – Deborah Meaden is a friend – and his favourite film is Brief Encounter. It all amounts to a wide-ranging wealth of influences upon which to draw, and I’m curious as to what Mat will try next. I’ve heard that he hails from Nottingham and wonder if a collaboration with Shane Meadows could be on the cards? As a Midlands director who often explores the ‘cult’ strata of youth culture, it would appear a perfect match – but Mat is doubtful. “I know Shane and I have auditioned for him. Unfortunately at the time he felt I was too recognisable from The Catherine Tate Show. I think that recognition is even greater now for a certain ‘thing’, so as much as I’d love to do something with him, I think it’s

very unlikely.” Fans need not be disappointed, of course. Horne has just filmed The Proposal, a Chekhov play due for broadcast in November as part of Sky Arts’ celebration of the 150th anniversary of the writer’s birth. One of four works starring the likes of Steve Coogan and Johnny Vegas, this is an interesting next move for Horne. From gay pop star to innocent Essex lad to nervous Russian (Horne plays the hypochondriac Lomov), it would seem there are few roles Horne can’t get to grips with. If the strain of playing a part created by one of the literary world’s most imposing figures is weighing on him, it doesn’t show. And if Horne does start to feel the pressure? Then your best chance to spot him won’t be at some flashy watering hole – Horne likes to relax in more surprising settings. “What time I do get I play football and go look at the Herons at the Regents Park Heronry.” So there you have it: a modest, modern polymath with an eye for the birds. In an age of vanity and showbiz excess, a far cry from what you might expect. 

’m informed of my meeting point: The Lord Raglan pub on MartinSt-Le Grand. I’m a Londoner born and bred and yet I’ve never heard of the street before; everything starts to feel a bit ‘murder mystery’… At first approach I wonder if I’ve made it to the right place. It’s twilight on a grey Friday in the City of London, and while making my way through the throng of cityworkers filing into the pub, I’m wondering which of them (if any) are likely to be joining me on a London ghost walk. The truth is, I’ve no idea – and there it is again: the feeling that I’m about to embark on something strange and subterranean and slightly surreal. And then I spy someone. At the centre of the drinking hoards stands a figure that seems to have walked, not from one of the nearby offices or institutions of state, but from the pages of a history book. Clad in black morning dress complete with upstanding white shirt collar and plush Victorian necktie, the figure moves with devilish purpose to a nearby street corner and calls to attention the people behind him. Phew, I’m at the right spot. He is a small man of about forty, with a generous, open face and more than a hint of mischief in his eyes. When he speaks, the bystanders are quick to listen. The man is Richard Jones, and the eager crowd hanging on his every word is no random assortment of pub-goers but the latest customers of his company, the muchcelebrated London Ghost Tours. Young and old, male and female, local residents or travellers from foreign shores – all have come here tonight with the same aim: to learn more about the City of London’s grisly history – and perhaps have a few frights in the process. Before I go on, I should address the obvious question. A guided tour might seem a funny way for a native Londoner to pass the time. After all, we locals are used to navigating London at London speed; the landmarks so beloved of tourists are the backdrop to our everyday lives. Why would we need to join their ranks for a round of sight-seeing? But then it struck me. September was drawing to a close. October approached, and with it the most terrible and terrifying night of the year. No, not the first round of the X Factor finals: Halloween! How best to celebrate everything awful and ghastly and ghoulish this year? I’d hunted high and low, but ghostly goings-on seemed in

pitifully short supply. What other way was there to spook myself silly? As I was to find out on that gloomy autumn evening, Richard Jones held the answer. We began our tour – a kind of living, breathing Horrible History for teenagers and upwards – right at the heart of the City of London. Richard, who has been researching, devising and leading these walks for over twenty years (as well as writing books on paranormal history and acting as a consultant for the media) gave us a brief overview of what to expect – a ninety minute wander around the City of London’s most haunted spots – then asked who among us believed in ghosts, before striding off into the gathering night. We followed, wide-eyed and filled with a pleasurable foreboding – while also wondering how on earth forty people would be able to hear one man telling ghost stories above the London traffic. We needn’t have worried. Richard is as much a performer as a storyteller, and his tales rose masterfully above the City’s nighttime din. In churchyard after churchyard, on seemingly innocent corners, beneath statues we’d passed a thousand times and never noticed, he brought some of the City’s weirdest and wildest legends back to spine-tingling life. Imagine, for example, standing in a darkening graveyard and being regaled with the murderous misdeeds of Isabella, queen of Edward II and known to her petrified public as the She-Wolf of France. Then imagine finding out you may be standing on her grave at the very moment the story is told – a grave, it is rumoured, from which Isabella rises in the dead of night, her husband’s bloody heart still beating in her hand… The tour is packed to the brim with stories like this – Richard spares no historical detail and leaves no bloodstained stone unturned in his mission to entertain.

We listened spellbound to tales of treacherous churchwardens, phantom Roman sentries and even a haunted elevator shaft in one of London’s oldest hospitals, all delivered with such polish and panache – and a large dose of good humour (not to mention a few well-placed shocks) – that by the end of the night it felt like we’d experienced a master-class in open-air theatre. An even more pleasant surprise was how the tour refreshed our fascination with London itself. It’s surprising how little most of us know of the hidden histories that surround us, but taking a walk with Richard means you can’t help but be reminded that there are amazing stories behind every stone and brick of the city. Of course, the hints are often right before our eyes – Richard’s genius is to point them out in the most colourful way possible. And it’s not just adults who are open to the experience: our tour included several teenagers and members of the Twilight generation who seemed as absorbed as everyone else. You’ll find yourself gasping at how some of the darkest aspects of London’s past have infiltrated our contemporary culture without us even knowing it. Many apparently innocent nursery rhymes, strange superstitions and everyday phrases have had their origins in murder and bloodshed, and the tour soon had me wishing I’d paid more attention in the past to the stories that have built the place I call my hometown – and vowing to learn more in future. In the meantime, Richard Jones and London Ghost Tours have furnished me with a bunch of fresh ghost stories perfect for Halloween – as well as a new admiration for the City of London’s publicans, all of whom seem to work in buildings thoroughly infested with spooks! At the beginning of the tour, when Richard asked if the tour group believed in ghosts, I answered in the negative. approached my mother and baby class at Sequinpark with ever so slight trepidation. For one thing, the class I’d signed up to take was ‘Step and Tone’. Having taken various step classes over the years, I’m acutely aware of the dangers – I once made the unfortunate mistake of joining a ‘level three’, where it appeared that everyone knew the full Fame repertoire by heart. It should have carried a warning. I ended up devising my own steps, hoping no one would see and wishing I’d picked a spot by the door. But this wasn’t the only concern, for this time I would be participating without that most vital accessory for a mother and baby class: a baby. I couldn’t help but fear I’d feel out of place. However, putting my worries aside for the moment, I bargained for a rather relaxed class, envisioning mothers tending to their newborns while I, minus child, waited for the workout to get hardcore. I was pretty much wrong on all counts. In short, the class was one of the best I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been to a lot). Led by the genial and welcoming Amy, the part of the class that revolved around the step was easy to follow but not boring (I think we even managed a few Fameesque moves – high five!), while the toning element really worked the most rarely used of muscles (my stomach and arms were feeling it well into the next day). Contrary to my aforementioned ‘level three’ nightmare, the trouble with group

classes can sometimes be that you feel you’re exercising moderately rather than vigorously, even when not stopping for sly breaks. But Amy had us all adequately puffed out judging by some of the pained expressions around the room. Apparently, if we keep this up by Christmas we should be able to do a onearm press up… I will have arrived! But what of the baby part? The ‘mum’ classes at Sequinpark are actually aimed equally at non-mothers. In fact, there was only one tot in the class I attended: a little baby girl nestled on a giant strawberry bed and being as good as gold. She must’ve thought we were all mad, prancing up and down - though we didn’t keep her captivated for long, and she fell into a deep slumber a quarter of the way through. Gym manager, Geraldine Waring tells me that the Pilates and Yolates classes tend to be very popular with mothers, and that sometimes ten babies will be lined up in their carry-chairs against the wall. Members of staff are on hand whenever there are so many little ones in attendance, so that mothers can relax and enjoy the class without worrying. And this is just one example of the gym’s thoughtfulness and support that emerges as I talk to Geri. The aim is not just to offer ‘mother and baby’ classes; it’s to foster a safe environment in which mothers (especially new ones) can feel a sense of inclusion and sorority and meet other mums. So what’s the

difference between these classes and an in-house crèche? Again, it’s that notion of support and inclusion - new mothers can be understandably apprehensive about leaving their newborns. The classes provide not only an opportunity for mums to keep fit but also, importantly, a bonding exercise for mother and baby - as well as a stimulating new experience for the tots at no extra cost. More and more mother and baby classes are becoming available as gyms finally recognise that organising childcare for an hour-long class can be irksome for mothers. Sequinpark, however, was quicker on the uptake than most, and has been running mum-friendly classes for 20 years. Geri herself brought her now grown-up son to classes and, amazingly, many of the first generation of babies are now teenage members! The use of such stimulus changes are referred to ‘training phases’, of which ‘Periodisation’ is the planning and implementation of varied training phases so to achieve a specific and desired goal. Such goals might be increases in muscle mass, fat loss or increased fitness for example. At Revolution personal training studios, a typical training phase will last for 4-6 weeks. Within this time frame the body will adapt to this new stimulus and thus adapt to it. The reason we talk about 4-6 weeks is that it is around this duration that the body will become accustomed to a stimulus and thus beneficial adaptions or gains will be greatly reduced after this time. This reduction in adaptation is commonly referred to as a ‘plateau’ or perhaps a ‘point of diminished return’. Based on the above, a trainer can strategically and logically vary the training stimuli or training phases to efficiently work towards a specific goal. An example of ‘Periodisation’, or logical training phases that we might facilitate at Revolution when targeting fat loss in a novice

trainer has been detailed below, however, as mentioned previously there is no one size fits all approach or magic formula that will be relevant for all who may want to reduce body fat. A trainer will always need to look closely at an individual’s needs prior to planning training phases. 12 WEEK CHALLENGE: PHASE 1 (WEEKS 1-4): BASE CONDITIONING Within this phase we focus on core strength and flexibility at first to enable your body to go through the required range of movement. We teach your body to squat, rotate, push, pull and twist. These movements / stimuli have an immediate effect on changing the shape and composition of your body. As part of this phase we will also dominantly make use of resistance training, typically low resistance and high volume i.e. low weight and lots of repetitions, this will allow the body’s joints and muscles to become accustomed to certain actions which will become important during a later training phase. In addition, resistance training has been proven to burn calories long after a session in comparison to cardiovascular training. PHASE 2 (WEEKS 5-8): HYPERTROPHY It’s now time to give your body a new stimulus so to ensure constant progression towards fat loss. Within this phase

we will increase the bodies’ lean muscle mass and muscular tone by increasing the resistance being used whilst reducing the repetitions within exercises. Quite simply, by adding lean muscle mass to the body we are increasing your basal metabolic rate or the rate at which we burn calories when at rest. For every pound of muscle you have you will burn 16 calories per hour as opposed to 2 calories for every pound of fat. PHASE 3 (WEEKS 9-12): CIRCUIT STYLE TRAINING To maintain efficient adaptation of the body and continued fat loss, we could now move into a circuit style phase. Within this more intense training phase we would seek to group together exercises, performing them in a particular order and with minimal rest between repetitions of the circuit. This type of training can dramatically increase your cardiovascular fitness and reduce body fat however should not be undertaken without prior preparation i.e. a good level of base conditioning. DANGERS OF ‘HIGH-STREET’ COSMETIC SURGERY EXPOSED Numerous patients are emerging from expensive cosmetic surgeries with unsatisfactory results, health complications or traumatic experiences – so what should we look out for when shopping around for a plastic surgeon, asks Claire Saunders?

osmetic surgery has been one of the few industries to have bucked the trend during the recent recession, growing by roughly a fifth in two years. However, recent statistics have revealed that up to 75 per cent of cosmetic surgery clinics are unregulated, potentially harming unknowing patients. The report, carried out by The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD), an independent Whitehall-funded body which aims to improve medical care, showed that many companies offering cosmetic procedures such as face lifts, breast enlargement and liposuction, are not following basic safety guidelines. In fact, over half the companies approached breached the rules of the Care Quality Commission (CQC), by failing or refusing to fill in the questionnaire. “It’s been incredibly difficult to get information about the industry” said Ian Martin, a surgeon and one of the authors. “If we have difficulty finding who is doing what and where, then heaven help patients trying to find out what these facilities are like.” NCEPOD found that numerous cosmetic surgery clinics in the UK offered a large ‘menu’ of procedures (from nose jobs to liposuction) but in many cases the surgeons were not sufficiently experienced in all the surgeries on offer.

“These figures present a distressing picture, but one which is sadly not surprising to us as they only confirm what we have been saying for years – that there is an absolute need for statutory regulation in this sector,” comments Nigel Mercer, president of The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons – a body that only has around a third of the industry as members. So crucially, patients considering cosmetic procedures need to ensure that they fully research the credentials of any private clinic or hospital they approach for plastic surgery. ALE OF A TIME The story of the all-new Barnsbury, one of Islington’s best pub relaunches, could be a seen as a mirror of the wider economic rough and tumble of the last few years.

he tale runs thus: highly successful hedge fund manager Steve Coxshall makes a killing in the city during the boom years, but sees the bubble burst in the turbulent final days of 2008. Loathe to keep slaving away in an industry that has lost its allure, he decides instead to give it all up and pursue a long-term dream. Teaming up with two savvy partners, Shane Le Prevost and Mark Costar, Steve embarks on a mission: to buy and bring to life the ‘perfect pub’. Sound simple? The truth is anything but. “It’s very difficult to buy a pub freehold,” Steve says. “We must’ve viewed around 300 in the last 12 months.” But this is a man of much resolve – and unwavering confidence. When at last he found the right building, Steve had to fight hard to persuade the owners to sell it, his vision always at the forefront of his mind. “I have too much of a passion for it,” he says, “for it not to be a success.”

Indeed, he’s put his money where is mouth is, spending over £70k on the refurbishment so far. Fortunately for us, Islington proved the ideal location for the pub of Steve’s dreams. “I just love Islington,” he says when I meet him. “It’s unique to London. There’s such a variety of people, it’s not far from the City, yet it’s truly a community: it’s not transient the way other areas can be.” It’s this sense of community that made Steve feel magnetically drawn to the area – as well as giving him an urge to contribute, by creating a local pub with huge neighbourly appeal. So how exactly do you make a pub a home from home? Well, one way to an Islington resident’s heart seems to be through their stomach, and Steve is at pains to point out The Barnsbury’s commitment to first class food and drink. Again, it’s a simple recipe, but there’s an art to getting it right. Steve has the capital to invest in quality, so he never cuts corners.

It’s also about people. Steve believes his staff have a key part to play in the success of the pub, and this is reflected in good wages and an incentivised workforce. He points out that he has a superb bar manager – Ian Dawes. It’s a surprise to be so surprised at warm, welcoming customer service – but at The Barnsbury there really is still such a thing (long thought lost) as ‘service with a smile’. “For me, it’s not about the money or operating on a shoe-string budget; we want autonomy and to offer more than your average pub. A lot of landlords and chain-pub owners are out to make a quick buck then sell the pub off, and the spirit is lost.” This fly-by-night approach is nowhere in evidence at The Barnsbury. Instead, it’s Steve’s attention to detail that’s apparent at every turn – from the menu (definitely at the higher end of the gastro-pub scale) and the décor (more on which, later) to the coffee (pubs aren’t generally known for a good cup of joe, but the

Barnsbury can stand up to most coffee houses) and the ales. This last provides a great example of how Steve has taken the pub and its customers firmly to his heart. The Barnsbury specialises in no less than seven real ales, for which Steve spent £20,000 on a brand new cellar despite the fact that “Real ales aren’t massive profit-turners – they go off after three days.” Then why bother? “Because this is about being able to really offer something.” Plans for the future see Steve brim with excitement. Among the treats in the offing are wine evenings (complete with sommeliers), sausage nights, special Sunday lunches and more. And as an ambassador for the Prostate Cancer Charity, he intends to split real ale profits between the cause and a local charity, “On Wednesdays from 5.30 to 7.30pm we’ll be offering real ales at only £2 a pint to encourage and gain the momentum in our investment.” Such goodwill and flair for hospitality has paid off, with many celebs among the pub’s devoted regulars. On the most recent evening City & Angel spent at The Barnsbury, Steve’s bezzy mate Kyran Bracken (England Rugby player and winner of Dancing on Ice 2008), his wife Victoria and ex-Eastenders actress Kara Tointon (in the current run of Strictly Come Dancing) joined us for a raucously fun dinner. Over a superb meal washed down with a champagne beer (another Barnsbury speciality), Steve confided in me that last week, Duncan James (of boy-band Blue and

West End fame) was in the pub and tweeting about the pig cheeks. If only I had a Twitter account, I’d be raving about the dessert Steve insisted I have – honestly, he twisted my arm – a melt-in-the-mouth chocolate fondue served with a velvety ice-cream bursting with real strawberries, which Kara and I shared. The lady doth protest too much? Okay, it’s true: I ate more than her. In the meantime, Steve and Kyran were busy discussing their latest plan – to host an evening to celebrate the forthcoming Six Nations Rugby Championship. But Kyran is not the only celebrity friend getting his hands dirty in helping turn The Barnsbury into Islington’s premier pub. Kara too has been involved since the beginning, lending Steve her talents by overseeing the redesign of the establishment’s interior. Having abandoned her planned enrolment at art college to concentrate on acting, Kara says she relished the opportunity to revisit the world of art and design, in which she has been interested since an early age. “It was a fantastic first project,” she says, “I jumped at the chance to do it and am really grateful to Steve for entrusting something so dear to his heart to me.” A fantastic project, but not an easy one.You wouldn’t know it to look at the pub today, but Kara’s plans had to fit into a three-week turnaround time! Whatever the deadlines involved, the outcome is an obvious success. Unlike so many gastro-pubs, The Barnsbury doesn’t seem overdone and awash with floral motifs. The most striking feature, in fact, is the antiquated wood that still forms part of the building’s structure. It was a big part of the reason why the venue first appealed to Kara and Steve, with Kara adding that “I really wanted to retain that original feature,

so everything else – from the lighting to the individual pieces – I’ve put in to complement that.” Like the fine ‘duck egg’ paint that appears throughout (Kara’s favourite colour) and ensures that the stripped back effect of the old wood doesn’t begin to seem contrived. Or the lovely garden, complete with whitewashed walls and beautiful hanging baskets. Or the antique trinkets – a hand-carved wooden bus, a brass horn – sourced from local markets, which make you feel like you’ve just stumbled on a scene from a perfect Christmas. And there’s the rub, because the effect of all this love and care – the stately decorative touches here and there, the nods to the past and the tasteful winks towards the contemporary – is to make The Barnsbury feel very, very cosy – the kind of local where you can imagine spending many a long hour curled up with a warming snifter and some good company. A friendly, inviting neighbourhood pub par excellence, then – and with more than a touch of class to boot. The BarnsBury’s Braised shoulder of lamB Recipe from ivan The chef Preparation time 30 mins, cooking time 4 hrs

IngredIents:

1 x 1.8kg (4lb) lean shoulder of lamb Salt and pepper 2tbsp sunflower oil 2 medium onions, peeled and quartered 2 large carrots, peeled and roughly chopped 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped 2 springs of rosemary , 2 springs of mint, 4 cloves of garlic peeled 500ml Water (chicken or lamb stock if you have) 200ml White Vine Aluminium foil, cling film, parchment paper.

Method 1. PreP

Place the joint on a chopping board and season on both sides. Score the top side with a sharp knife. Put the mint, rosemary and garlic in a food processor and blend with a little bit of olive oil until thick paste is formed. Heat the oil in a roasting tray and cook the lamb for 3-4 minutes on both sides. Place the lamb back on a chopping board and in the same tray roast onions carrots and celery, until brown. Deglaze the tray by adding the white wine and scraping the pan with a wooden spoon if required. In the meantime rub the paste onto both sides of the shoulder, especially into the scores so that the meat gets as much flavour as possible.

2. Cook

Place the lamb on a tray making sure the vegetables are between the meat and bottom of the tray Add water (lamb or chicken stock is best) Bring to the boil and cover with thick aluminium foil Place in the middle of the oven and cook at 120°C (gas mark 2) for 3½-4 hrs Pick the meat whilst still warm leaving only the bones and fat; discard the fat and transfer the cooking liquid into a pot with all the vegetables and bones - leave on the stove to reduce by two thirds until it reaches a sauce consistency. Transfer the meat into a mixing bowl and season if necessary adding some of the reducing liquid. Mix the meat, salt and pepper and the liquid with hands. Place a sheet (50cm long) of aluminium foil on the table, put a layer of parchment paper over the foil and place the meat in the middle, roll it up and tighten it up with cling film. Put in the fridge to set.

3. Finish

Cut the rolled lamb in to 5cm pieces and still wrapped, sear both sides in a hot pan. Add the sauce and place in the oven at gas mark 6. After 10 mins the sauce will have thickened; use scissors to take the wrapping off After another 5 minutes in the oven, place the rolls on the plate and pour the sticky sauce over the top. Serve with crushed new potatoes and curly kale or spring greens.

PIZZA THE ACTION Helen Baron heads down to the Tea Building to try a modern take on the pizzeria

’d been meaning to try Pizza East ever since it opened in 2009, but somehow I’d never got around to it. The restaurant is housed within the imposing Tea building on Shoreditch High Street, a venue I knew from my clubbing days, and though I was curious to try the new eatery for myself, this sense of familiarity seemed to remove any urgency from my efforts. I added Pizza East to my ever-growing ‘must do’ list, and was quickly distracted by a million other things. I am regretting that now. A self-proclaimed ‘modern take on the pizzeria’, Pizza East is another feather in the cap of the Soho House Group – which also owns private members club Shoreditch House, right next door. The restaurant’s professed ethos centres on a commitment to seasonal and local produce and an ‘inventive’ approach to rustic Italian cooking. Which sounds good – but just how easy can it be, to make something fresh out of one of the most popular cuisines on earth? Easy it may not have been, but Pizza East has managed it nonetheless – from the architecture onwards. The Tea building looks stunning, benefitting from a refit that plays up all its strengths – the open plan space, the industrial vibe of its exposed brick walls and gleaming ventilation pipes. There’s something very New York City about Pizza East; it’s the kind of establishment you’d find heaving with happy diners in the Brooklyn artistic enclave of Dumbo (for those unfamiliar with NYC parlance, this means Down

Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). The restaurant is packed on the night of our visit, and possessed of the kind of buzz that money can’t buy. Quite simply, it feels like the place to be – and in an area not short of supposed places to be, that’s no small feat. That said, there’s nothing off-putting about the place, and the greeting we get from our maître d’ – one of the most beautiful girls I’ve ever seen – is as warm and welcoming as you could wish for. That greeting, it should be said, included a glass of prosecco as we eye up the menu. I’d bargained on fairly typical pizzeria fare but this far exceeded my expectations. The options – all rustically themed – sounded delightful and our lovely waiter Davide was on hand to tell us about the varied ingredients, some of which I’ve actually never heard of before. Everything was reasonably priced too – my companion and I began to feel like we were in for something special. We weren’t wrong. The first dishes arrived soon afterwards and were charged with flavour, authentically Italian but inventive. We had the baby artichoke with lemon and almonds and the mackerel with Umbrian lentils to start, followed by skate with puntarelle, anchovies and celery and a four cheese pizza laden with gorgonzola, puzzone, taleggio and parmesan. A side of spinach completed the feast, and we munched our way through it all happily. The different flavours in each dish were combined with perfect subtlety, while the quality and freshness of the ingredients

meant that we felt pleasantly sated fairly quickly. In fact, with the addition of an amazing Montepulciano we were drinking, we felt as though we’d been blessed with a supper fit for a king. But when the fare is this good, there is always room for more. We continued our meal with hot cinnamon dusted doughnuts served with to-die-for Valrhona chocolate and – as recommended by the charming manager – a salted chocolate caramel tart. This latter resembled a giant, chocolate-infused sticky toffee surrounded by short crust pastry, and has me planning my next trip even as I type. Finally, we rounded off our meal (I’m not sure how) with some freshly brewed Italian coffee, served with a small piece of warm biscotti and, with the compliments of Davide, some delicious Muscato from his home city of Venice. It was the perfect note on which to end a cosy, classy evening in a beautiful setting. Pizza East is a triumph on every level – service, atmosphere, price and food – and as my friend and I stepped out of the Tea building and headed for home, I found myself distracted once again. Only this time, it was by thoughts of when I would be returning for another of those heavenly desserts, and with whom. his month sees the return of the Islington Contemporary Art and Design fair. Organised by the Candid Arts Trust, the fair will be held in their impressive galleries tucked quietly behind Angel tube. Housed in two huge converted Victorian warehouses and comprising one of the largest contemporary arts spaces in London, the venue is the perfect place to showcase the 200 or so artists and designers exhibiting their work this year. For 20 years the Candid Arts Trust has had a mandate to promote the arts and art education in the local area, acting as a hub around which orbits all manner of creative endeavours. The trust, a registered charity, houses studios and regularly holds exhibitions to help promote and support new work. Numerous degree shows are held throughout the year and its graduate art and design network provides the opportunity for artists to have their work promoted at a reduced rate. Candid also offer a variety of art classes for the wider public, or simply the chance to lazily sip coffee in their serene courtyard and stylish cafe. The focus though has always been on supporting fresh new talent in the often difficult period after leaving education. Now in its seventh year, the Islington Contemporary Art and Design Fair is the culmination of all this support – and the perfect platform for new talent to show their work to a wide audience and get vital exposure. Speaking to Matthew Bowen, the organiser of the fair, he tells me how Candid exists to provide a platform for new talent and to support creativity – especially in the first few years after graduation, when up-andcoming artists can struggle to establish themselves and find an audience for their work. The fair sees a huge variety of creatives from all over the country come together

under one roof to exhibit their work and attempt to make all-important contacts and sales. With most of the artists manning their stalls personally, it also affords a rare opportunity to meet and buy direct from the artists themselves, and to gain an insight into the newest ideas in contemporary art and design. Matthew tells me that despite the fair now being an established event, “it stays fresh because of the new work from up and coming talent,” and a quick look at the artists and designers exhibiting this year, as well as the wealth of exciting pieces on show, emphatically backs that up. Spanning four weekends, the range of the work exhibited is vast and offers a treasure trove of original ideas and pieces for first-time buyers and seasoned collectors alike. For one thing, this year will be the first time Rowanne Anderson will show her stunning black and white wood and lino cut animal prints. These bold, close-up portraits are at once beautiful images of wildlife and arresting glimpses into the deeper psychologies and characters of their animal subjects. Speaking about the fair she said, “I was immediately attracted to the idea of showing my work directly to visitors and potential buyers, and it therefore being more of a personal process.” The fair isn’t restricted to just new talent however, and also features some more established artists. The site usually holds monthly screenings where emerging filmmakers can show their work and network as well as attend Q&A sessions with notable industry directors, screenwriters and the like. During the fair the Projection Room will be showing a selection of the best short films from past sessions selected by a panel of programmers at Candid. As always, the emphasis will be on contemporary work by breakthrough talent: a philosophy that has served Candid and the local area well, and which promises to continue to bring new talent to the fore. 61

GOING BEYOND

Without a diesel model in its line-up, buyers struggled to make sense of Infiniti, says Matthew Carter. But now that’s all changed

t must have been one of those classic Homer Simpson ‘Doh’ moments. The stage had been set for the launch of not just a new car, but of an entire new marque – Infiniti. The luxury Japanese brand (it’s an arm of Nissan just as Lexus is to Toyota) had long been popular in America, but now was the time for the cars to be sold in Europe. And then global economic chaos set in. You can imagine the conversation around the boardroom table. “So, remind me again, we have a range of luxury cars powered by powerful but thirsty V6 and V8 petrol engines. And the two biggest are both four-wheel drives.

“So that means our cars are expensive gas-guzzlers that pump out huge amounts of CO2… and we major on Chelsea Tractors that attract unwanted attention from the antis. “And we’re going to launch all this just as a recession hits. D’oh!” Against that backdrop, Infiniti might have been forgiven if it had quietly dropped its plans for Europe and retreated back the US. But to its credit it continued and even made a virtue out of the recession, deciding that lower-thananticipated sales made the marque even more exclusive. But Infiniti bosses also knew that their cars wouldn’t be out of tune with the

market forever, though even they would admit the more socially acceptable diesel models couldn’t come quickly enough. It’s been worth the wait. There are diesel versions of the gargantuan FX 4x4 and the forthcoming M saloon, but the pick of the crop is the EX30d. EX is what Infiniti calls a compact crossover, part 4x4, part luxury coupé. But it’s the 30d bit that’s the most significant element here. It refers to the car’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and which goes some way to restoring the car’s environmental credentials. The combined mpg, for example, is 33mpg – rather better than

Motoring the petrol’s 25mpg – while emissions improve to a betterbut-still-not-brilliant 224g/km. The figures are good enough, though, to allow you to drive the Infiniti with a clear-ish conscience, and that’s all that really matters. But the best news is that the new diesel engine is really rather good. Infiniti’s 3.7-litre V6 petrol is a hard act to follow: it’s creamy smooth, wonderfully powerful and makes a superb noise. The diesel’s deep bass rumble on start-up instantly lets you know it’s an oil burner, but once on the move you’d be hard pushed to tell it’s not a petrol by listening alone. Infiniti is all about refinement, and the fact that there’s a diesel under the bonnet just means the engineers have worked a little harder to ensure its air of sophistication remains. Better than that, though, the engine’s huge pulling power means that in everyday overtaking terms it’s probably quicker than the petrol. And you certainly won’t spend as much time at the filling station. The super-smooth 7-speed automatic box must take some of the credit here. Changes are instant and imperceptible and there’s a Sport mode to sharpen things up still further. Although it has four-wheel drive, in normal use the system has a rearward bias, meaning the EX feels quite sporting when being driven with verve. But when the going gets slippery, the intelligent system reads the conditions and immediately starts to equalise the torque between the wheels, so that grip and drive are where they are needed. In other respects, the diesel is identical to the petrol version.That means clever

coupé-inspired looks (even if that means it’s not quite as spacious as you might think) and a seriously luxurious interior. High-quality leather is offset by a modern, black lacquer finish to the console, though classic maple wood is an option. And the top-of-the-range GT Premium model is absolutely loaded with seriously clever kit. On top of the usual stuff – the climate control, the touch screen satnav, the 2GB Music Box where you can download your favourite CDs and not have to lug them about with you, and so on – the Premium has something called Lane Departure Prevention (LDP). So you’re driving down the motorway and your mind – and the car – starts to wander. As you stray over the white line, the system gives an audible and visible warning as, indeed, do many other similar systems. Where the Infiniti goes one better is that, should the driver ignore the warnings, it intercepts by gently

applying the brakes to one side of the car to create a yaw effect that brings the car back into line. To LDP you can add a series of other acronyms such as Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW). If you have a crash in the Infiniti, it’s clearly because you wanted one. But perhaps the cleverest bit of standard kit is the Around View Monitor (yes, you’ve got it: AVM). Imagine a parking camera mounted not just on the tailgate, but also on the radiator grille and within both side door mirrors. Merge all four feeds together and you have a remarkable bird’s-eye image that appears to come from some 20 feet above the car. It allows inch-perfect parking everything, even in the tightest of gaps. But perhaps the thing that lifts EX30d – any Infiniti indeed – above the rest is what they call the Infiniti Total Ownership Experience. The showrooms are a mix of boutique hotel and nightclub cool. Owners are treated like individuals – VIP individuals, that is – and Infiniti reckons the aftercare is second to none. And now Londoners now have a chance to experience it first-hand with the recent opening of the capital’s Infiniti Centre in Piccadilly. Even Homer Simpson would be treated with due reverence. 
