Aircraft were taking off and landing as guests arrived and the blank white space gave ample scope to create the ‘wow’ factor. And, at just half an hour from Paris, Le Bourget, this is a convenient location for an international wedding. The 185-acre grounds feature gardens by Le Notre, including fountain, cascade and lakes. The dining room has the original 17th-century carved stone buffet and other spaces – including Grand Salon and Music Salon – are dripping with painstakingly restored period features. lillingston.co.uk

FASHION first lady
Credited with helping to transform the bridal scene, Rosa Clará Pallarès presides over a truly international empire, but says that it is still the real bride who remains her first and most important inspiration Wo r d s b y
LIBBY NORMAN
R
osa Clará Pallarès is Spanish bridal’s fi rst lady. Her eponymous company Grupo Rosa Clará is an international powerhouse that dresses brides from Azerbaijan to Qatar, as well as producing cocktail and occasion gowns that grace many red carpets. The plaudits come thick and fast these days and – in a country that specialises in dressing the world’s brides – her collections regularly get top billing. Once again, her gowns opened the show at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week last spring and were widely covered in the Spanish and international press. Rosa Clará is clear that – despite the celebrity fans who regularly attend her shows or make a splash in one of her gowns at a fi lm premiere or party – the real star is always the bride. She says: “Real brides were and are my fi rst inspiration – it’s about their tastes, desires and wishes for their wedding day”. And herein lies the secret of her brand’s stratospheric rise, because she began by rethinking what brides actually wanted in a sector that was – as far as she was concerned – a fashion backwater. absolutely-weddings.co.uk

HER BRIDAL STYLE IS REFINED WITH A FASHION EDGE
EXQUISITE FABRICS ARE A TRADEMARK
Having worked in the bridal industry for over a decade she set out alone in the mid 1990s. She says: “I started 20 years ago with a multi-brand bridal shop and I realised that what women were looking for just wasn’t available among the brands in existence. That’s why I decided to create my own collection. I thought: ‘I can contribute something’.” She says it was tough creating a brand from zero, but from the opening of the fi rst shop in Barcelona there has been an eager market for the elegant, luxurious and fashion-forward designs she creates. “When we started, I thought we could add something different, something new, to the bridal sector – I now think we revolutionised it. But when we opened our fi rst shop I never imagined I would achieve so much professionally and personally.” Recalling the breakthrough collection, she now recognises how different it was: “That fi rst collection was truly innovative, with top quality pieces that enabled the bride to select a gown for her big day that matched her identity – a design that had her name on it”. Almost from the start the brand gained an international audience; it rapidly found success in Italy and other countries across Europe, particularly those that

shared a tradition for knockout glamour at weddings. Over time more markets opened and the network of bridal stores has now become truly global. Rosa Clará says: “At the moment we count 140 shops around the world, with 3,500 stockists in 81 countries”. It helps that Spain has a worldwide reputation for fantastic bridalwear. “As a nation, we are the second biggest bridal gown exporter after China, which is a very significant position. There is a long tradition of exceptional textiles in Spain and this quality is recognised at international level. The label ‘made in Spain’ is seen as a mark of quality.” Rosa Clará has been widely recognised for her unique contribution to bridal fashion trends and business leadership; the awards are too numerous to detail in full but include best bridal designer at Miami Fashion Week and EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year – she says she values each and every one of these awards. But at Rosa Clará’s Barcelona base, THERE ARE THREE BRIDAL there is no COLLECTIONS TO time to rest on SUIT EVERY STYLE OF WEDDING these laurels. The brand has
now grown to encompass three distinct collections that all carry her signature and have different characteristics to suit brides and wedding styles. Rosa Clará is for the bride who demands the ultimate in quality and materials – gorgeous lace from the south of France, fine Italian embroidery and exceptional cloth. Rosa Clará Two is focused around high-glamour silhouettes, with volume skirts, soft laces and fantasy tulles, while Rosa Clará Soft is about romance – using soft and floaty fabrics for the elegant and thoroughly modern bride. Previous profiles have detailed how she personally supervises each and every gown design. She has admitted that this creative control is both her biggest strength and weakness – she is learning to delegate. Seasonal collections begin with what Rosa Clará
27 Weddings_ Emirates_SS17_ROSA CLARA LN.indd 27
Real brides are my first inspiration – it’s about their desires for their wedding day describes as a massive search for cloth of the right quality. This is combined with a trawl for information about what brides are asking for. The team study bridal and fashion trends and use the ideas this generates to develop prototype gowns. Prototypes are analysed and modified until they match the original vision, utilising fabrics and accessories that work with the brand spirit and the Rosa Clará signature. It is, as she admits, a painstaking process. “It takes a lot of dedication and effort but I am surrounded by a very professional and motivated team. Our ISSUE ONE

aim is always to be clear with objectives for each gown and – most of all – design a distinguished product”. Over time, the Rosa Clará brand name has become an almost equal force to be reckoned with in occasion gowns. The collection for mothers of the bride and red-carpet event goers is already stocked at Esposa Privé in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with a further store within a store at Salam Department Store in the Wafi Mall. Across Europe and Latin America these super-glamorous gowns are also very well known. Brand ambassadors such as Mexican actress and

entrepreneur Paulina Rubio and America’s Eva Longoria have been among many distinguished wearers on the red carpet. “As with our bridal collection,” says Rosa Clará, “we aim to create designs to meet the needs of real women. We offer a huge variety of designs and silhouettes and dress women of all ages. I would say we have had the good fortune to dress women with a lot of style – the kind of women who set trends and understand the value of a good gown.” For the coming season and beyond, Spanish bridal fashion’s first lady is predicting a very creative take on the bridal silhouette – from billowing skirts to highly structured lines to romantic details such as bows and organza petals. New introductions to her collections include a textured cloqué – a fabulous ‘bubbled’ fabric
We have had the good fortune to dress women with a lot of style – women who understand the value of a good gown redolent of the most glamorous 1950s couture designs. There are also fantastic crystal and silver thread embroidery back details and a brand new Chantilly lace with a luminous metallic finish. Internationalism continues apace – meaning more brides and occasion goers will be introduced to Rosa Clará’s distinctive combination of timeless quality and fashion-forward silhouettes. The designer has absolutely no doubts that her magic formula works for all brides: “I believe brides understand us perfectly – they recognise the quality of our cloth, the couture details and the fashion concepts in our bridal collections – these elements mark out a Rosa Clará original and appeal to the brides who choose us.” ROSA CLARÁ – Dubai bridal stockists include The Bridal Showroom. British DESIGNERS TO KNOW Bespoke, tailored and luxe, here are five British-based designers who are worth consulting if you’re looking for a unique bridal style, fabulous handmade tailoring and the truly personal touch Wo r d s b y
LIBBY NORMAN
ANDREA HAWKES
he London design house of Andrea T Hawkes has taken things back to fi rst principles, creating elegant tailored gowns and separates that are in tune with the changing face of modern weddings – especially celebrations where the bride is looking for glamour with a fashion-forward and understated vibe. Designer Andrea Hawkes worked with several London bridal couture designers before establishing her label and has translated her experience working with many brides into a curated collection that has style without the fuss. At the label’s Clerkenwell base, you can view main and capsule collections and also commission a gown. The focus here is on exceptional fabrics – Italian silks, French laces – and the fine details such as covered buttons. But you will see updates to all of these traditional couture features, including some really fine ‘edgy’ laces featuring pattern rather than flowers. The overall effect is perfect for the 21st century bride and everything is designed and made in the heart of London. andreahawkes.co.uk
consultation. If you visit the Glasgow store you can also visit her workshop where every bridal gown is designed and made. The Joyce Young look is all about grown-up glamour – with options ranging from sleek tailored gowns to fairytale full-skirted numbers. The exceptional fabrics and workmanship, and ability to design a gown from scratch (the full couture process with toiles and fittings) are what make this a place to come if you want something one off. There is a huge emphasis on personal service and Joyce often outfits the whole female party (bridesmaid and mother of the bride outfits follow the same grown-up glam aesthetic). She launched a new bridal separates collection last autumn – bringing even more choice into her exceptional collection for the wedding party. joyceyoungcollections.co.uk

ew European designer Katya Shehurina splits her time between Soho and her studio in Riga, Latvia and she brings what she describes as a ‘modern vintage’ aesthetic to bridal design. There is certainly a romantic twist that is perfect for the boho wedding, although great cut and interesting pairings of fabrics keep things fresh. Brides visiting her London

West End showroom can view the 2017 collection of gowns, but also have the option to create a bespoke design – either by mixing and matching components they love from different dresses or by exploring the endless possibilities of changing colour of gown or underslip. There are wonderful and exclusive laces in the mix – all sourced by Katya – along with fine Italian silks and Swarovski detailing. Gowns are all handmade, and in as little as six to eight weeks for the lastminute bride. But if you have more time this is a great place to come for an entirely bespoke and utterly enchanting gown. shehurina.com
LYN ASHWORTH
yn Ashworth is a byword for the English bridal gown – romantic and timeless elegance – but was established in London by a New Zealander. Now owned by equally talented designer Sarah Barrett, it maintains the same unique signature that has earned it fans across Europe and the Middle East. Every Lyn Ashworth gown uses fine silks and laces – no compromises – and the workmanship is as British as the designs. While Lyn Ashworth gowns are stocked in leading boutiques – including BOA in Richmond – a by-appointment visit to its home base is definitely worth it. The Staffordshire HQ sits on Duchy land, surrounded by the beautiful fields that often feature in its photography shoots, so this is possibly the most romantic

occasion pieces. Her studio just off London's Fulham Road is an inspiring source of ideas – especially if you want something a little different. Sanyukta has a very fresh take on what brides might want – so her collection includes fabulous silk jumpsuits alongside ethereal full-length gowns and fashionforward two-piece ensembles, and with lots of colour choices other than white. Each gown is handmade and the commitment to craft is part of the label’s DNA. Fairtrade and ethical fabrics such as organic silk, bamboo and hemp feature and she works to help ensure the craft skills she grew up with in rural Nepal survive. Alongside her ready-to-wear bridal and occasion collections, Sanyukta offers bespoke, giving you the opportunity to experience the couture processes involved in hand-making a true original. sanyuktashrestha.com

DESIGN DNA: SPAIN
Rosa Clará
Marco & Maria
Clare Thompson, of London and Birmingham store The Wedding Club, explores the design DNA of Spain by picking out four favourite bridal labels
O
Rosa Clará
ne in ten of the world’s brides wear a Spanish wedding gown and a visit to Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week shows the sheer scale of its industry. The Wedding Club’s Clare Thompson, a regular at BBFW, says: “Spain’s traditions of exquisite tailoring and grand weddings have certainly helped cement ‘made in Spain’ as a mark of quality, and the industry's size means hot new designers can emerge”. Here are four designers that Clare believes show the range of Spanish talent.
ROSA CLARÁ
S itting alongside Pronovias
as a global force in bridalwear – see page 24 – Rosa Clará has a unique brand signature. Clare says: “I’ve always loved Rosa Clará’s impeccable style and the fi nish of the gowns. I’d characterise the look as refi ned – on-trend details never overwhelm the feminine and elegant lines”. For 2017, Clare says, there are fabulous textured gowns, some with 1950s-style details.
PRONOVIAS
T he chances are everybody
has attended a wedding where the bride wore Pronovias, Spain's largest bridal exporter. Clare says: “It’s universally recognised for exceptional quality. Atelier Pronovias, offered at our Birmingham store, is made with haute couture processes, and we admire the extraordinary care the Barcelona company’s seamstresses put in to handmaking each gown”. While you will always fi nd timeless styles, there are edgy elements: “In 2017 brides will see strong emphasis on sleek, body-lengthening lines”.
MARCO & MARIA YolanCris
YOLANCRIS
Pronovias
F ellow Barcelona label
YolanCris was founded by sisters Yolanda and Cristina Perez and is a stellar example of Catalonia’s talent for fi nding new interpretations of bridal. Clare says: “We advise brides who want something edgy to consider YolanCris. There’s a 1970s influence – think Studio 54 glamour with contemporary edge”. For 2017, expect floaty layering and glam belt, fringe and scarf details.
W hile Barcelona is bridal
epicentre, Tenerife has produced one of the most exciting bridal labels in Europe. Marco Marrero and María Díazstyle – who started out with a small design workshop – now have a global fan base. Clare describes the look as contemporary fairytale – with trademark sheer fabrics. For 2017, says Clare, the focus remains body skimming shapes and ethereal transparent overlays, plus marine colours and details such as pussy bows. Trends for 2017
Leading wedding hair and beauty specialists Team Glam have already planned key looks for 2017 – working with both brides and leading bridal designers. Here, they share their lookbook essentials for the coming seasons P h o t o s : P H O T O G R A P H Y B YA N N A M A R I E . C O M

eam Glam are wedding hair and make-up specialists who create looks for both brides and bridal designers. Makeup director Carla Brooks and hair director Tara Cox predict that 2017 will continue to be the year of the relaxed bride – with natural hair and low-key but radiant make-up. Here are Team Glam’s top trends for the year ahead.
FRESH, GLOWING SKIN
For the brides and designers we work with, 2017 is all about fresh, luminous skin. The days of full-coverage matte-finish foundations are over, and the natural complexion continues to be the most important starting point of the bridal look. And, of course, everyone wants to look their most radiant on their wedding day. The secret of achieving this look is to focus on skin tone, creating a healthy glow that is fresh and bright. Using a ‘less is more’ approach with bases, and adding subtle blushers and highlighters, helps to build colour and radiance into the skin. This
66 17/01/2017 12:46
WEDDINGS BEAUTY LOOKS trend works well with all bridal styles and, while the fi nished effect is subtle and lowkey, it relies on the right base products.
MATTE AND NEUTRAL EYES
The ‘no make-up’ trend is still huge for brides. A key element of this is using a matte fi nish and neutral shades for eyeshadows. Subtle shadows give the perfect tone and add enough defi nition to the eyes to make them the focus of the face. Another benefit of using matte neutrals is that they are not overpowering for daytime – working well with both strong light and photography – and can easily be built up to create a stronger look for the evening. Matte neutrals work well for those brides who don’t wear a lot of make-up as they subtly enhance rather than change your appearance. They work well with all styles – offering the flexibility to build up strength of colour to match the gown, formality of the occasion and time of day.
RELAXED, UNDONE HAIR
Most brides are opting for very natural hair – nothing too structured or perfectly in place. While relaxed ‘up dos’ are still popular and look very effective, a key trend we are noticing is a move towards hair down. Many brides we’re working with now are requesting their hair long and natural and embracing those centre partings that have become such a feature of designer runway shows. Waves are also very popular for 2017, and we’re also seeing a more relaxed curl. Braids remain popular, but the look is relaxed, with styles such as the fishtail. While brides always have to consider the structure and neckline of the dress, the relaxed hair look works with the current trend for simpler and two-piece dresses and always works brilliantly with more boho styles.
STATEMENT HAIR ACCESSORIES
With the hallmark of 2017 being simple elegance, we are seeing a bit of drama introduced through a statement hair accessory. From flower headpieces to crystal combs – these elements can work with all bridal styles. We’ve incorporated several ideas into our 2017 lookbooks to show brides the many different looks that can be achieved. We think they are a great way to add interest to an ultra-simple dress or add a glamorous point of focus at the hairline to complement an intricate lace or textured gown. DIRECTOR OF LEADING INTERNATIONAL EVENTS, PARTY AND WEDDING COMPANY LILLINGSTON lillingston .co.uk
We want to create a themed wedding that strikes the right balance between originality and formality as we have older guests in the mix who need to feel comfortable. What would you advise? eddings have become much more elaborate, and there is a greater emphasis on the party, so most guests are comfortable with a theme. The theme can be as developed as you like, but the best way to ensure it works is to stay focused on elements you need – the look of the bar, style of seating, food, ingredients, and so on. It is easy to get carried away introducing props and extras that don’t have a clear purpose, so focus on elements that ensure the day runs smoothly. Make the theme something that expresses your personality – it’s your day and will be most memorable if it ties in with the things that people associate with you. In our experience, whatever the theme it works best to keep the format traditional – reception, dinner then dancing. Guests know what to expect next and this helps everyone feel at ease. It is also a good idea to ensure you cover off the five senses for each stage – visual and fragrant elements such as candles and flowers, sound with good music, taste with delicious food and drink, and tactile features such as comfortable seating and fine linen. Everyone will welcome surprise elements if the main component parts of the day are familiar. And ensuring special consideration towards the needs and comfort of the oldest and youngest guests means everyone else can relax and enjoy the party.

We want a centrepiece at our wedding but we don’t want the traditional wedding cake because my partner doesn’t like it. What would you recommend? am biased, but I would certainly consider a croquembouche, which is a wedding speciality in my native France and something we make for lots of celebrations. We don’t touch traditional wedding cakes, but like to think we are masters of French alternatives – we’ve just won the Craft Baking Award at the BIA, which are like the Oscars for baking. Traditionally a croquembouche is a tower of profiteroles, with each choux bun filled with custard and a topping of spun sugar, chocolate or caramel. We make lots of bespoke alternatives. For instance, recently we created a tower using éclairs rather than profiteroles, and we can also make them with macarons. If you opt for the profiterole version, we recommend allowing for three per guest. To add more theatre to the occasion, you could have the croquembouche assembled on site. It’s a wonderful way to get guests involved in a bit of theatre – children especially love to help. Towards the end of building the tower we put up a curtain to finish off the decoration. Then the curtain is removed for the ‘big reveal’. We also make other lighter cakes and desserts – including our signature Belle Époque, which I designed for my then wife-to-be 15 years ago to impress her. It’s an orange-infused crème brulée centre coated in Valhrona dark chocolate mousse, with chocolate sponge and praline.
I
We’re planning a December wedding, but I want flowers that feel sophisticated, rather than using the typical festive colours and themes. I’m not keen on rich reds and greens and don’t want my wedding to turn into just another Christmas party. What would you suggest? or a sophisticated winter wedding we would normally tend to avoid the traditional Christmas colour palette of whites, greens and reds, but there are plenty of other options to consider and you can keep things very subtle or add dramatic focal points. We would suggest that when it comes to selecting the colour scheme, you think about the flowers that you love in dayto-day life. Don’t be afraid to choose a favourite flower that perhaps doesn’t emanate Christmas or winter. For instance, a beautiful blush rose (my personal favourite), is often associated with early spring, but can be the perfect place to start for your bouquet and arrangements. It is also a good choice for creating a luxury atmosphere at a winter gathering. The festive element can still be added in a restrained way without becoming overwhelming once you have decided on your overall theme and colours. For instance, you could incorporate statement garlands and tablesettings using seasonal foliage, decorative gold pine cones, and silk ribbon. Vessels and candelabras are also important for setting the scene and a very good way to add subtle drama and a celebratory atmosphere – especially if you choose crystal, gold or silver tones.

rides often worry that if they choose the dress too early, they won’t be at their target shape, but all our dresses – both our London exclusives and boutique ranges – are made in our workshop in Taunton, Somerset, so fittings happen close to the wedding. I still advise brides to start early – nine to twelve months is ideal. This gives space to plan and is especially useful if we are working with unusual fabrics or a specialist techniques. Not every bride works so far in advance and we help many create their dream dress over a shorter time period. While going-away outfits no longer seem to exist, the extra dress for pre or post ceremony event (or both) is now popular. A smart alternative that we also love to create is one gown to take you from wedding to party with a few small adjustments. We’ve always designed occasion as well as wedding gowns, so the recent move into a larger store just down the road enables us to showcase a much broader range. This includes smart but non-traditional mother of the bride outfits. Emmy London is now located in our old premises – we work closely together so it will be lovely to be close neighbours.

L
ewis R. Stevenson of stationers Leeming Brothers often advises couples on wedding stationery ‘wediquette’. He says that while many couples worry about using correct wording, being imaginative is becoming the norm. “Putting your own personal touch on the text is a great way of making your wedding suite truly yours," says Lewis. But he does advise you to keep essentials in mind: "You still have to ensure that all of the details your guests need to know are included”. Here are his tips for the essentials and extras in your stationery suite.
INVITATION
The traditional engraved folded card (right) is still hugely popular, and deservedly so. If you want tradition with a twist, Lewis suggests you consider absolutely-weddings.co.uk

changing the ink or board colour, although conventional wording works best with this style. There are endless less formal options – from unusual shapes to a personal monogram.
SAVE THE DATE
No formal rules, but do keep things simple. If the wedding is in a far-flung location, give enough detail for guests to start making travel plans.
RSVP CARD
It’s good form to include a stamp if you have an RSVP card, along with a website or app option for those who don’t do post.
INFORMATION CARD
The more complex your wedding arrangements, the more detail you neeed on locations, start times and so on. Ensure all the 'need to know' is there and then consider adding parking advice, local hotel recommendations, maps and gift list information. leemingbrothers.co.uk

here’s something magical about journeying to a small island and, while Greece has plenty to choose from, Skiathos has exactly the right dimensions for a chillout honeymoon. Located in the Sporades archipelago, off Greece’s east coast, it’s diminutive – measuring around seven miles from north to south – making it easy to explore if you can tear yourself away from the beach. And, of course, beaches are what draw most visitors to Greece. Even with so much choice, Skiathos – with mile upon mile of unspoilt sand and clear blue waters – is a standout destination. WEDDINGS LUXURY TRAVEL offering direct fl ights from some European cities during summer months, it’s also the perfect fly and flop destination. We have chosen a two-centre break with Santikos Hotels, a family-owned hotel group on the island, beginning in the hub of the island's Skiathos town before heading down to Agia Paraskevi. The five-star Aegean Suites Hotel, our fi rst port of call, is nestled in the hills outside Skiathos town. Just 20 suites make this boutique hotel a great base where you can take things at your own pace. The rooms are large and comfortable – contemporary in style and without fuss – ours has an outside terrace with a private jacuzzi and great views of the Aegean. In fact, the whole focus here is on downtime, with three laid-back restaurants, plus an array of spa and wellness treatments – from YOGAaqua to hiking. If beach is your thing, it’s only a short stroll from the pool to pristine sand. Personal service is a big feature of all Santikos Hotels, and the 24-hour concierge

service here can organise everything from open-air theatre at the Bourtzi, to a private boat trip to a deserted beach and the best seats at the Windmill restaurant. Skiathos town still has remnants of the island’s boatbuilding industry in the shape of a dry dock, although these days you are more likely to see smart yachts in the harbour than the traditional caiques the island was renowned for. If you venture out to explore, it’s well worth checking out Evangelistrías Monastery, a short taxi ride away, where the fi rst Greek flag was stitched and unfurled in 1807. The small on-site museum charts the struggle for independence. At the wild northern tip of the island, Kástro is the island’s original settlement. Once fortified against pirate marauders, it was abandoned in favour of Skiathos town in the 18th century and now ruined churches and a gatehouse are all that remain. After a few days of sun and exploring, we move on to the Princess Hotel, another five-star property and located right on Agia Paraskevi. It’s still a short hop by local bus or taxi to the town, but the chief draw here is the fantastic ocean location, offering watersports against a peaceful pine-clad backdrop. While it’s larger than the Aegean, with over 100 rooms, it still feels intimate and with lots of personal touches. This is a popular wedding spot and it’s not hard to see why with its pristine beach setting. There’s a smart casual dress code at any of the hotel’s four lovely restaurants. Our favourite is the all-white taverna-style PR Ammos right on the beach (also the top spot for wedding feasts). As we gorge on fabulous local seafood and watch the sun go down we conclude that if you’re looking for the classic Greek idyll to celebrate with friends and family or chill à deux, then this is probably it. Santikos Aegean Suites Hotel and Princess Resort are offered through a variety of tour operators, including Classic Collection Holidays (classic-collection.co.uk). santikoshotels.com

here is an almost giddy romance about Budapest. Packed with Art Nouveau architecture, and with the mighty Danube separating the two sides of this historic Habsburg capital, it is also city of ancient springs – taking the waters is not a treat but a way of life here. Gresham Palace – like the bridge – is a national monument. Built by Gresham Life Assurance Company of London as a headquarters and apartment block, it was saved for the nation and restored, retaining its palatial features but with no hint that it’s been preserved in aspic. Now it’s all about contemporary luxe and its grand lobby with stalactite-like chandelier welcomes you into calm seclusion. This is most welcome because Budapest is having a heatwave when we arrive and this cathedral-like space is blissfully cool. It’s a 365-day dish for hungry Hungarians and well worth sampling, whatever the temperature, because it is always made with love. The desserts are divine and we share an ice cream and sorbet selection. While our trip is for R&R rather than sightseeing, we do make forays to the Buda side for a visit to the Cave Church and a wander along the riverbank. We also check out the indoor market on the Pest side – the place to find everything from paprika and salamis to buffaloskin handbags. Finally, since no trip to Budapest is complete without at least one thermal baths session, we talk to the charming and all-knowing concierge. He says that everyone on the Gresham Palace concierge team has a personal favourite, so we opt for the Széchenyi since it’s close by and among his recommendations. And, nice touch this, we pop back to reserve our taxi and pick up the courtesy fluffy Gresham Palace towels and slippers to make our thermal spa session a truly immersive home from home. eorgie and Ed knew they wanted to marry abroad and, because Ed had lived and studied in Spain, this became their fi rst choice. They researched venues across the country and knew they had struck gold when they found Hacienda de San Rafael. Georgie says: “We both felt it suited what we wanted for our wedding day. The wine and food, along with so many other elements, were out of this world and when we went on a recce trip we made up our minds straight away”. Once an olive-growing estate, this beautiful 18th-century hacienda close to Seville has been restored as a traditional country hideaway with contemporary luxury comforts. As it’s set in five-acres of beautiful gardens, with three swimming pools and in-house chefs, it can also comfortably accommodate a wedding crowd. suited the theme perfectly. Her four bridesmaids – two in rich orange and two in pale blue – brought bolder colour to the wedding party. Simple bouquets adhered to the mainly white theme but with flashes of sunshine shades. The whole design of the day was laid-back, but with a defi nite nod to local Andalusian traditions. Georgie says: “We had Spanish elements throughout the wedding – a churros and chocolate cart and tiles from Seville for table place names.” The simple service in the sunshine concluded with a confetti shower of olive leaves for the couple – a lovely touch very much in keeping with tradition. The hacienda came into its own for the after party, offering ample space for relaxed time round the pool and an evening wedding feast that went on into the small hours. Twinkling lights were dotted through the trees, with olive sprigs used to decorate the white chairs and as a motif for placesettings. For Georgie and Ed, there was no ISSUE ONE

The setting and food, along with so many other elements, were out of this world
I do think that it’s important to keep things simple – too many people getting involved can overcomplicate things”. Their tip for other brides and grooms is to savour the whole creative journey of making your day unique. Georgie says: “Enjoy the planning part of the process, which can be easier said than done. As part of my job I organise weddings and events for clients, so I loved organising our wedding day”. The lovely photographs by Tara Moller capture the relaxed and happy vibe and the magic of this glorious Andalusian celebration. Georgie says: “Seeing how happy people are for both of you is an incredible experience and makes you realise just how lucky you are. “Finally, do try to take a moment just the two of you during the celebration (which I know everyone says). We wish we had done that more. Time goes so quickly, so drink it all in!"
doubt that this was a magical choice for their celebration. Georgie says: “Spending time with everyone in these amazing surroundings was a highlight for me. Dancing till dawn with all my favourite people in one place is something that I will never forget”. Having chosen Hacienda de San Rafael, the couple were able to relax and let the on-site team handle many of the fine details – which definitely made the long-distance planning process easier. Georgie says: “Anthony who owns and runs the venue is incredible and made the experience totally stress free.

PARIS MATCH It had to be Paris for Sherry and Jeffrey’s destination wedding, an elegant twocelebration event for international guests Photography:

aris was the only logical location for the wedding of Jeffrey and Sherry. With all its romance and elegance, it was also the site of their first meeting. Sherry, who hails from Hong Kong, had met Jeffrey from Texas in the fabled ‘City of Love’ four years earlier and the couple had never looked back. This truly international wedding was designed as a two-celebration event for the couple and their 66 guests. Sherry and Jeffrey chose as their base the Four Seasons George V Paris and the festivities began with a welcome cruise down the River Seine. Guests took in the city panoramas offered by the river, while enjoying canapés, cocktails, and specially prepared dishes from food stations. The wedding ceremony took place at the splendid 18thcentury Ledoux building, Le Pavillon de Musique de la Comtesse du Barry.
There, a pure white marquee was placed alongside the mansion. Guests arrived in S & J monogrammed vehicles and were greeted by music from a string quartet. Sherry had chosen a gown by Galia Lahav that evoked a distinctly 1920s Parisian aesthetic. A beautiful floral theme of white and pink, including lush roses, was used to dress the venue. The S & J monogram was a recurring theme, used on the wedding aisle carpet, on table linen, guests’ welcome packs, and as an overlay on mansion mirrors. Customcommissioned throughout the venues, it brought a romantic touch to soften and personalise these heritage settings. Guests received handmade parasols and fans, inspired by the couple’s Hong Kong home – a very practical touch in the August heat of Paris. The ceremony took place under a bespoke floral arch decorated in tonal shades, ranging from blush to vibrant pink. Sherry walked up the aisle with

her father and was accompanied by three bridesmaids in Jenny Yoo gowns. Jeffrey – in an impeccably cut suit – had three groomsmen. Guests enjoyed a relaxed lunch inside Pavillon du Barry to the accompaniment of the string quartet. An illustrator created live portraits of guests – a very Parisian touch – as a memento of the day. As night fell, guests were chauffeured to the George V Four
Seasons for the cocktail reception. With a jazz quartet playing, guests were invited to explore the relationship of the couple through a series of framed photographs lining the walls. The bride had changed into a Grecian-style gown decorated with crystals and created by Reem Acra. The centrepiece was a tree bedecked with ornate keys, each bearing a card tag. Guests wrote their advice on the ‘key to the happy marriage’ on the tag, attached this to a board and were invited to keep the key as a memento. By the end of the reception, the board was full of wise and kind messages for Sherry and Jeffrey. The ballroom itself had a botanical fantasy theme of blush-toned flowers, courtesy of Jeff Leatham. After the bride and groom cut into their wedding
cake, alight with sparklers, guests were offered both a slice of cake and delicate portions of traditional French desserts. Each guest was also given a metallic fortune cookie containing an individual note from the couple. This, and the many other personalised touches – all brilliantly organised by wedding planner Quintessentially Weddings – brought the spirit of Sherry and Jeffrey to every facet of the wedding and provided guests with lasting memories of a special celebration in the City of Love. ◆

GARDEN paradise
Sneha and Farhaan scoured London before discovering paradise in Kew – the perfect backdrop for their elegant and contemporary Indian wedding celebration Photography:

hen Sneha and Farhaan began searching for a wedding venue they weren’t sure what they wanted, but the minute they visited Kew Gardens, they knew they had found the right place. Sneha says: “The venue had been something we struggled with. We weren’t sure what we were looking for so we spread our search to manor houses, halls and hotels – we must have looked at practically every venue in the south east. It wasn’t until we went to Kew that we felt, this is where it can happen”. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has a variety of fabulous spaces; the couple chose Kew’s Nash Conservatory for their service and the 18th-century Orangery for the reception. With these light-fi lled backdrops, they were able to create an elegant and simple theme. Sneha says: “There had to be a nod to our Asian backgrounds, but with a contemporary feel”. The lush flowers were created by Sophie King of The Bloomery, Twickenham, who combined traditional old roses and trailing
Seeing Sneha in her wedding dress was an amazing moment I will never forget carnations with late-summer exotics such as crocosmia, red hot pokers and dahlias. The same blending of traditions was in evidence for wedding entertainment, which included both mellow saxophone music and, later on, Indian dhol drummers from Evo Entertainment. For Sneha and Farhaan, a high point of the day was the service. Sneha says: “There is one moment

that I hold very close to me – the moment I saw Farhaan at the end of the aisle. I was very nervous before that for many reasons – tripping over my high heels, my hair coming undone, and so on. I know it sounds super cheesy, but as soon as I saw him, it’s like nothing else mattered. I literally only remember seeing him, and having the biggest sense of relief – like all the weight on my shoulders had just lifted away”. Farhaan says: “Waiting at the end of the aisle felt like an eternity but when the music started and I managed to get a peek at Sneha past all our friends and family I realised that this was it! Seeing her in her wedding dress was an amazing moment I will never forget. Our fi rst dance and then seeing all our friends and family on the dance floor was another special moment – especially with our traditional Indian drummers playing along to the music." ISSUE ONE

It wasn’t until we went to Kew that we felt this is where it can happen
Their advice to other brides and grooms is to get to know suppliers on a personal level, since they ensure what you planned comes together. The couple felt hugely supported by their team. Sneha says: “Kat Halls from Kew was an absolute star – she really helped me to keep calm and made sure everything ran smoothly. Natalie Danielle, my hair and make-up artist, helped to keep me sane. And our photographers Daria and Marek from Plenty to Declare – hanging out with them was like being with friends”.
Sneha and Farhaan also recommend getting involved yourselves. The wedding website they created became the place to share plans for the day with guests. Other personal touches the couple created together – tablecards, placesettings and activity packs for young guests – took time but were hugely satisfying. Sneha and Farhaan’s fi nal tip is to relax and go with the flow. Sneha says: “Before you know it, the day will be over, so enjoy it as much as you can – don’t worry too much about other things”. ◆

And so it was that Alice and David set forth on their wedding day in Boreham, Essex in the back of a perfectly polished 1956 Pickfords lorry. ALICE: There were other vehicles to choose from, but in the end David chose his favourite Susie (all his uncle's vehicles have

names). David’s uncle drove us and he must have started buffing and polishing her about a week before the wedding. All our guests loved it because Susie was parked outside the church and then his uncle drove us on to the reception in the back, with a short detour to go and visit my horse. In the end, David and I must have been driven about four miles in her. It wasn’t the best choice for my hair, but a great way to travel. We did have to swap sides so that David sat next to the exhaust because there was black smoke when the engine started – it
did cross my mind that if I sat too close I might go up in flames! BEN: This was a photographer’s gift – setting the tone for a really individual wedding. What you can’t grasp from the photo is just how high the back of the truck is. Alice and David had to use a ladder to climb in. I rode up in the front and was a little worried when David’s uncle first started the engine and smoke engulfed the cabin. He told me she just needed to warm up. It was a good fun ride, and it shows in the pictures we captured of Alice, David and Susie. ◆
