t's always party season in these parts of town, especially if you're of school age. Competitive parenting is particularly active in the arena of birthday parties, and no-one knows this better than Fulhambased duo Sharky and George. This well-connected pair are London's hottest children's entertainers and parents all over town have been clamouring to book them for their offspring for years – but now these same adults are booking them for their own parties too. Meeting them has been a highlight of this month – especially since I was lucky enough to visit their own treehouse office and sit on a toadstool for the duration, feeling just like an excited eight-year-old. You can read all about them in this issue, which also includes an interview with the adorably honest Kirstie Allsopp, who is shifting her focus from property to pompoms with a new craft obsession. Other people we've met this month include the inspirational

Geoff and Simone Sewell, another party duo, though not the children's kind. This is the couple behind Incognito Artists, who provide singing waiters (and pilots, and priests, and anything else you could think of) to the global great and good. They tell many a good story, though you sense that there are plenty more that they're not telling, with discretion remaining a large part of their business. Interesting people aside, this issue is also crammed with all the usual shopping ideas, diary dates and food news as well as updates from the property market. Enjoy August. ◆

icture this. You’re at a 40th birthday party. Everyone is talking about the cake, which is rumoured to be amazing. When it comes out, it is carried by two chefs because it is enormous. But disaster strikes. They drop the cake and it smashes into pieces. The guests are reduced to silence; everyone feels terrible. What next? Not what you’d expect. The pastry chefs break into song. And not just any song, because it soon becomes clear that they’re not chefs at all – they’re professional tenors straight from the West End. Cue gasps of amazement all round, and soon the entire room is joining in with the chorus of That’s Amore. Why is it that some parties are better than others? What makes an event really memorable rather than just good? One person who really knows how to make things special is Geoff Sewell. This New Zealand-born former accountant retrained as a singer when the work simply got too dull and now his life is spent travelling the world, performing at the most glamorous occasions and the most decadent parties. He and his wife

WE'VE HAD SINGING CHEFS AND SINGING AUCTIONEERS Simone are the brains behind Incognito Artists, the organisation that brings singers and parties together, and adds a large dose of surprise to the mix. Sewell has the bright-eyed, whitetoothed appearance of a man who is truly happy with his life. He looks like a walking self-help book, smiling and confident.
His positive approach is infectious, and testimonials for his business come from Richard Branson, Elton John and Prince William. Sewell has sung for Nelson Mandela, Leonardo Di Caprio, Quincy Jones, Janet Jackson and the Beckhams as well as the Queen, Princes Charles, William and Harry in venues ranging from the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, Sir Elton’s and the Beckhams’ homes, the Royal Albert Hall, the House of Commons, Moscow’s International House of Music and St Mark’s Square in Venice to the pitches at Twickenham, Wimbledon and the Millennium Stadium. Together with his band, Amici Forever – dubbed ‘the world’s first opera band’ – he has sold over 3.5 million albums worldwide. But he’s not exclusively a party man. When their daughter Sienna was diagnosed with autism aged two, he left the band so that he and Simone could dedicate themselves to finding treatment for her, setting up the Sewell Foundation as a charity for families affected by autism in the process. So he’s a multi-talent. He tells me about Incognito’s various clever party pieces with child-like enthusiasm. ‘We started with three tenors and now we’re a fully fledged entertainment agency. We want

to create an experience that people will never forget.’ And without giving away too much, a large part of their skill lies in devising a surprise at the heart of an event. So, for instance, they have disguised singers in countless ways over the years. ‘We’ve had singing priests at weddings – and singing photographers. I’ve sung in a bunny suit. We have had singing pilots on private jets serenading at 1000 feet. We’ve had singing chefs and singing auctioneers.’ To build up to these revelations, they like to introduce a sob story first to make everyone feel truly terrible before flooding them with relief and joy. ‘We call it the Cinderella story,’ says Sewell. ‘So the waitress might interrupt a party to explain that it’s her last day at work and she has been dared to sing in front of everyone.’ Usually people are understanding, but when she starts singing terribly, a collective cringe ensues… until she reveals her true voice.
‘People don’t see it coming and in the end we always get everyone singing,’ enthuses Simone. Music can span ‘everything from opera to Uptown Funk’. The whole thing really took off when Elton John’s party planner booked them soon after they started in 2000. ‘As soon as we did that, we had the Beckhams, Camilla Parker Bowles, Philip Green and others.’ And the type of parties they were booked for went stratospheric. ‘We’ve been to billionaires’ clubs in Sardinia where 100 dollar bills were being used as confetti, we’re performed for Donald Trump in Palm Beach; we’ve been to Necker Island for Richard Branson’s daughter’s parties.’ The Sewells are a force to be reckoned with. u incognitoartists.com

ou can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.” If the Victoria & Albert Museum’s latest exhibition was to have a tagline this would be it. Facing History: Contemporary Portraiture is the newest installment in The Julie and Robert Breckman Prints and Drawings Gallery and illuminates 80 prints and photographs by over 20 artists. These works released from the V&A’s collection explore the concept of portraiture, with the contributing artists including Grayson Perry, Gavin Turk, Julian Opie and Thomas Ruff. Spanning two decades, the pieces on display capture the changes in portraiture, the techniques used, and the impact the rapidly evolving society has had on it on as an art form.

The showcase, while an insight to portraiture through a contemporary lens, is laced with traditional methods – from portrait miniatures and black and white etchings, to cut paper silhouettes, medals and death masks. Grayson Perry’s Mr and Mrs Perry (2005) makes reference to the crude portraits of the 19th century through his use of lino-cutting, where figurative painter Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s signature dark palette brings to life her fictional subjects. Eleven works from Ellen Heck’s Forty Fridas series (2011-12) assume the form of woodcut and drypoint prints and, unsurprisingly, feature 40 women dressed as Frida Kahlo in an interesting bid to investigate the notions of individuality and self-presentation.
Also inspired by identity as an idea, Cecilia Mandrile incorporates the issue of immigration into her ID-Intensively Displaced, which studies the uncertainty migrants face with ID cards bearing dolls in different, scantily resourced environments. Turk, however, turns and points the camera at himself in his 1997 self-referential piece, Portrait of Something That I’ll Never Really See, where Brian D. Cohen photographs actor Bryan Cranston as his famed character Walter White in the cult US television show, Breaking Bad. At its essence, Facing History: Contemporary Portraiture holds a mirror to society via its exploration into portraiture, asking the following question: Where have we come from and what will future societies think of us? Here’s to hoping it’s a good reflection. u

hat did you do for your eighth birthday? Musical chairs and homemade cake? Or, if you were lucky, a magician and a bought cake? Not if your uncle is George Whitefield, in which case yours would have been a blueprint for some of the most fabulous kiddie parties of the generation. Because in London’s prime postcodes and among the wellheeled of the provinces, there is only one person to call when your little darling’s special day approaches. Or make that two people. Sharky (Charlie Astor) and George (Whitefield) are the children’s party entertainers du jour, so much so that their names now refer to an empire that includes literally hundreds of Sharky and Georges, with outposts in the Caribbean, requests from all over the world and high profile clients including the Camerons, Paul McCartney and Holly Willoughby. I’ve come to Fulham to meet them on their own turf, which is in fact an
actual treehouse. Of course it is. Climb up the ladder, sit on a toadstool and a pulley system will deliver your drink. The boys (you can’t help calling them that) are charming ex-Etonians: Sharky is the quiet, serious one (he went out with Pippa Middleton, apparently) while George is a madcap Peter Pan/ Willy Wonka hybrid character with a shock of curly hair and a big elfin grin. On the face of it you’d imagine George as the natural entertainer and Sharky as the business face. Though maybe that’s too obvious. Perhaps it’s the other way round. They’re busy people, especially at this time of year, they say. What are they working on? Let’s take this coming weekend. ‘I’m a bit worried about the weather,’ says Sharky. ‘We’re entertaining 600 adults at the Tower of London.’ There’s also a children’s party. ‘This should be a good fun one. We’ve made four worlds – a Peter Pan one, a Harry Potter one, a Narnia one and a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory one. 80 children will go round the world in teams and have cool experiences,’ says Sharky, matter-of-factly. Eighty children? It sounds more like a theme

ARTS & CULTURE / INTERVIEW park than a party. I bet none of those kids could be swayed by musical chairs. ‘Oh, it’s a joint party for three sisters. We’ve devised a big Quiddich game.’ Clearly we have come a long way from pass the parcel. Sharky and George have revolutionized the (already quite highoctane, in these parts of town) children’s party since they launched in London eight years ago, before which they’d already gained a reputation through turning up at George’s nieces and nephews’ parties as the fun uncles. ‘We did our first party when we were at school, then carried on through university. The basic party is more or less the same today; it’s all about really getting the children involved.’ Can any Sharky and George party really be described as basic? ‘The majority of what we do are £300-£400 parties in someone’s garden,’ says George. These will involve a lot of high energy running around with a large dose of spontaneity and fun. But these ‘basic’ bashes aren’t always enough in the
Lots of people do have parrots that can talk but when they’re in front of lots of people they get quite shy, apparently.’ Tigers and shy parrots. All in a day’s work at Sharky and George HQ. ‘Finding a fireman’s pole for a Fireman Sam party in a chalet in Switzerland was quite hard too,’ muses Sharky. ‘And anything with boats is tricky.’ The pair’s latest foray is into the world of adult parties, which are a natural progression from the uber-elaborate teenage parties they’ve been working on lately. ‘We’re getting more of a reputation for being able to pull off these amazing experiences involving boat chases around London with actors and helicopters and spy equipment and things.’ These are the parties for the people who have everything and have done it all before. Those who are sick of cocktails and conversation can find themselves embroiled in a complex treasure hunt centred around an insurance scam, a fake work of art and a
highly competitive world of children’s party planning, and with many London children attending multiple parties in an average month, the bar gets raised at an alarming pace. ‘The bigger parties have grown over the years,’ admits George, though he won’t get drawn into any discussion about competitive parent behavior. Surely there must be some demanding clients? What’s the most outlandish thing they’ve been asked for? ‘A tiger,’ replies George in a flash. ‘Yesterday we were asked whether we could organise a tiger for this weekend. So we did. But today they phoned back and said actually can we have some talking parrots instead? So we had to cancel the tiger. And it turns out that talking parrots are quite difficult to find.’ Harder than tigers? ‘It’s amazing what you find yourself researching.

list of possible suspects, or searching for a buried box on a private island. The scenarios are more like immersive theatre than parties; the storylines involve a lot of professionalism and planning. A recent code-breaking party for a group of highly intelligent 16 year-olds involved code written specially for them by a Cambridge computer science expert ‘We knew that the boys loved The Apprentice, Fort Boyade and the film The Game and that they were very good at maths and science, so we made them work out GPS coordinates and solve an algorithm in order to enter the enemy lair. We spent ages trying to work out the code but they saw it instantly. The whole thing ended up in a chase across London.’ Another one involved a 24-hour St Trinians-themed sleepover for a group of 11 year-old girls, taking in an art heist and a headmistress figure in a country house done up as a boarding school, along with a complicated backstory about Ofsted. ‘We were working on that one for quite a while,’ says George. Clearly they can’t do it all themselves, but who else can deliver such a service? They both claim to be able to spot the right people straight off. ‘Actors make up 60% of the core team but we have teachers, musicians, medical students and even a tree surgeon on the books. You have to be good at losing your inhibitions and being energetic.’ The Sharky and George empire is expanding to take on kids clubs in hotels (the Four Seasons in Hampshire and Jumbly Bay in Antigua, to start) as well as the expanded adults offering, so expect to see more of them. Plainly there is no limit to what we will do to protect our little darlings from boredom and obscurity. Can anything shock them? ‘Not yet.’ Book your own bespoke, no-expense-spared experience now. ◆

Through a mixture of forthright opinions, battle-hardened negotiation tactics and no little glamour, Allsopp has played her part in Location, Location, Location becoming one of Channel 4’s most watched shows of a generation. So is it really true that Allsopp, whose outspoken outbursts - on housing, politics, culture and anything else that takes her fancy - are infamous, doesn’t even have a say, let alone have a hands-on role, in any upcoming projects and developments in her own Notting Hill home? Hard as that

is to believe, Allsopp insists that it is the case. “Luckily, my other half is in charge,” Allsopp says of her partner Ben Andersen, adding one caveat – “apart from curtains and cushions. And he plays his cards very close to his chest so I don’t know what he’s got planned at the
moment, but there’s always something up his sleeve.” Andersen is a property developer, so Allsopp’s trust is hardly misplaced. But anyone that has had a sneak peek into the Holland Park home they have shared since 2006 will surmise that the 43-yearold hasn’t always surrendered influence when it comes to decor. Formerly two flats knocked through to create a spacious dream family home, the interior of this 1950s building has all the idiosyncratic hallmarks that regular viewers of Location and Kirstie’s Homemade Home will recognise as Allsopp traits. From the kitchen table tops that used to belong to a school science laboratory to the large vintage wooden wardrobe situated next to a fridge, her homespun vintage chic is everywhere. Though Allsopp has in the past, perhaps somewhat disingenuously, called her home “the ugliest house on the street”, there is no doubt that it has helped Allsopp and family - Andersen, their two sons Bay and Oscar and Andersen’s two sons from a previous

relationship - settle in Notting Hill. Allsopp happily refers to herself as a “west London girl”, and says that it is the area, not the house, that keeps her local. Just as on the television, Allsopp talks enthusiastically and passionately about the things she believes in, and when the subject of conversation turns to local amenities, it’s no different to hearing her discuss with Phil a living room space she is particularly fond of. So whether it’s her mother-in-law’s shop - “she has the most beautiful antiques shop called The Lacquer Chest on Kensington Church Street” - or her favourite restaurant “I’m a huge fan of Bill Granger, I go to his restaurant quite a lot and I have his recipe book” - Allsopp is at her jovial best. She reserves special praise for Portobello Road and Golborne Road Market. “I’m a big, big supporter of them. For me, that is absolutely the heart of Notting Hill and I love my time there and I go there on a lot. I go to the markets on Friday morning and it’s a huge thing for me – those are my real local issues, protecting Portobello Road and the Golborne Road from development and people trying to change what goes on there. I think
THE VINTAGE AND the homemade

BEEN PASSIONS
it’s very special and so I’m very keen to protect that.” It’s no revelation to hear Allsopp talk up Notting Hill’s market places - the vintage and the homemade have always been huge passions. Her love of craft has permeated her work - she presented spinoff series such as Kirstie’s Handmade Britain and Kirstie’s Handmade Treasures - and in September she will once again host The Handmade Fair at Hampton Court, which brings together designers, artisans and hobbyists for

talks, workshops and stalls selling handmade wares. “We encourage people to come and experiment with different crafts. So if you’ve never done anything or you like the idea of it or you buy things but not necessarily try them out, it’s got something for everyone. So you can come and just go to the talks and the demos and meet and greet with likeminded crafters, or if you want to see the best of what’s out there, that’s an option too. It’s a day out, an experience not just a shopping trip.” That is at the start of autumn, but before that Allsopp will spend the summer between her Devon holiday home and Notting Hill, where she is keen to pick back up her summer hobby. It isn’t what you might expect. “Our big thing with the kids whenever we’re not busy and have some time off and not in Devon, is we all have scooters.” As unlikely as it may seem, that actually is the royal “we”. “I have an adult scooter called the Speedy Scooter, it’s a British made adult scooter and we scoot about lots, going down to the market, down to Hyde Park, it’s a great way to get around. I really recommend it to everybody. My children scoot, I think it’s fantastic.” So if you think you’ve seen Kirstie Allsopp literally scooting along the Portobello Road, it seems like your eyes were not deceiving you. ◆

t should be no surprise that a fashion label which perfectly marries creativity with commercially-minded pieces is a womenswear brand born by a former style editor. Anna Laub, founder and creative director of PRISM, is this person, and it’s her cool, clean-cut designs that recently earned her funding and mentoring from the British Fashion Council Fashion Trust. Imbued with timelessness, PRISM’s European-made pieces are a welcome reprieve from the sea of dizzying graphic prints and directional items plaguing today’s high street. The SS15 collection, with each design named after a coastal city or tropical island, possesses a sense of hazy nostalgia; the kind that accompanies visions of idyllic beach holidays of the 1960s. Fortunately, PRISM’s take on this fairly hackneyed inspiration is
IMBUED with TIMELESSNESS refreshingly novel: the summer line – in a muted palette of lilacs and taupes with navy, charcoal and crimson injections – celebrates school girl dressing by way of sporty one pieces and racer back crop tops you’d swear were the same ones you wore in PE class. But its peaked acetate sunglasses frames, interesting rectangle cut-out neckline detailing and ‘for pureness’ sake’ minimalist espadrilles turn what would be a naff interpretation of this pre-teen styling into an impossibly chic range ideal for the modern woman. With that, guess you’d better pop by PRISM Store, then. ◆ ● P R I S M STO R E 54 Chiltern Street, W1U; prismlondon.com

BACK STORY
Lilium in Snapdragon Texture, £260
A new breed of swimweardesigners is dedicated to reinventing the standard shapes, says Catriona Ramsay of Lilliput and Felix Wo r d s P e n d l e H a r t e
I
f you thought that swimwear shapes were predictable, think again. While standard swimsuit shapes and basic bikinis have been worked and reworked countless times, nothing really new seems to happen. But for summer 2015, things are beginning to change and a new generation of swimwear designers has sprung up with some designs that are shaking up the classic shapes. One of these is Catriona Ramsay, whose new label Lilliput and Felix is a small collection of pieces whose silhouettes don’t fall into the usual categories. She’s a fan of the self-tie swimsuit, which adjusts to fit, and many of her shapes are designed to be worn in a variety of different ways. ‘It’s all about the fabrics and the silhouettes for me. The idea is to merge the modern, new shapes and new fabric technologies with the classic and the nostalgic,’ she says, showing me her signature shape. It’s a low-backed, low hipped, cross panel one-piece with straps that cross at the front and tie at the back that combines a futuristic look with a 1950s feel. The floral fabric is a high tech polymide elastane blend that’s woven into a jacquard in a French mill. It really is a

crossover between the modern and the classic. ‘Texture is important to me. I want the pieces to be beautiful things that you want to touch, like a costume or an outfit in themselves.’ But Pimlico-based Ramsay’s background isn’t really in fashion; hers is a properly millennial hybrid career. After Cambridge, she went to work as an anthropologist for a brand strategy

firm, then changed tack and became a master of wine before taking action on her lifelong interest in swimwear and enrolling on an evening course at London College of Fashion. Then she opened a popup restaurant while launching her brand. And despite having had had swimwear ideas in her mind since childhood and learning the basics about swimwear and contour at college, putting designs into actual practice wasn’t easy. “I had two or three shapes but when I first started, the development took ages. I’d do a design that looked wonderful on paper and even the toile was alright but then when I made an actual costume I’d realize that it wouldn’t stay on at all and have to go back to the drawing board. It took me a while to get used to designing in three dimensions for the body, rather than something that looks beautiful in a sketch. I did lots of experimenting on myself.’ Because ultimately, swimwear has a high functional element. It needs to support – and flatter – a real female body. Plus it needs to stay on, and withstand sun, saltwater and chlorine. ‘I always had this idea for swimsuits with a low back. Nobody has a horrible back, so backs must be shown off.’ Another of her designs is a bandeau bikini that wraps round twice to tie either at the front or at the back. And further plans? ‘I’m working on more high-waisted pants and more
NOBODY has a horrible back. BACKS must be SHOWN OFF. 53 NH_AUG15_LILLIPUT FELIX.indd 53

covering bikini bottoms, plus a new style of bandeau and a balconette.’ But how can one make waves in an industry that’s so big and so crowded? Yes, there is a lot of swimwear around but I think I’ve carved a niche.’ The brand is stocked at Baar and Bass in Chelsea as well as online at Avenue 32, where it’s a favourite, no mean feat for such a young label. What other swimwear brands does Ramsay rate? ‘My favourite for quality and style would have to be Eres – they just do it so well, elegant and minimal. And Mara Hoffman for her prints. Also Marysia, who does these scalloped things, she’s really clever for her minimal shapes. Also I think Triangl’s campaigns have been really clever.’ Is it time to rethink your swimwear? You know where to go if so. ◆ lilliputandfelix.com

here seemed to be a gap in the market for a couture beauty house where “spa meets science and science meets skin.” That was, until House of Elemis popped up in the heart of Mayfair. If you’re looking for a tranquil getaway transporting you from the hustle and bustle, then this will be right up your street. Providing transformative treatments, House of Elemis is made up of The Penthouse and the Speed Spa: The Penthouse is decorated with bespoke artwork created exclusively for Elemis by the inspirational Valeria Nascimento, and can be hired out to experience signature penthouse treatments. If, for you, time is of the essence, then the Speed Spa delivers all the treatments you could need in a condensed amount of time, without skimping on quality. The brand’s philosophy that no two skins are the same is reflected in the wide range of unique offerings: try the Anti-Blemish Mattify & Calm Facial for lastingly clear, beautiful skin, or the Pro-Definition Lift & Contour if you’re looking to feel profoundly sculpted and youthful. The freestyle deep tissue massage is greatly recommended, while the Garden of Rose Restore Massage will leave skin feeling exquisitely moisturised, supple and scented. As if this wasn’t enough, there’s also a handful of packages to choose from, plus carefully formulated pregnancy treatments. House of Elemis is the first of it’s kind and an almighty slice of luxury, so sit back, relax and enjoy this revolutionary experience. ◆

love the freedom of abandoning the complexities of my make-up bag in August. Brushes and palettes are replaced with cream formulas that can be applied with fingers. It's time to shift my focus onto daytime skincare, seeking out multi-purpose products that moisturise and protect. Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis SPF 30 is the best high factor sun screen with added benefits I’ve found. It gives a sheen and tint to the skin and, though it doesn’t disguise imperfections, it improves the overall tone of the skin. I try to wear SPF 50 when on holiday, particularly on breezy beaches. This summer I will be taking Paula’s Choice Mattifying Fluid with me. It’s the only SPF 50 that doesn’t make me sweat.

For the evening, I love to add a little luminiser to my cheekbones and collarbone for a healthy, preppy feel (a look perfectly executed on the Calvin Klein Spring Summer catwalk). The RMS Luminizer fits in the tiniest handbag and delivers a sheer yet distinctive glow. Charlotte Tilbury’s beach stick dabbed onto cheeks and blended with fingers gives a hint of tan without the damage. Pop it on your lips for a chic, sheer lip. Finish by subtly filling in your brows with Blink’s handy travel size pencil - it will make you look instantly groomed. Finally, a cooling mask at night replenishes my skin. I tend to choose one that has a mild toning effect like this Fresh Rose Face Mask. ◆

eaches reign supreme this month, but let’s not confine them the puddings alone. The sweet juiciness of ripe peach works so well with the Pinot Gris grape, and especially those from New Zealand which usually deliver richer fruit. This one tastes of ripe pears drizzled with honey but it’s still dry and perky, and matches perfectly with the dish, even without the prosciutto. ◆

he grouse season hints that autumn isn’t too far away, and with this bird’s trademark delicate but gamey flavour a lighter, earthy red is the best bet. That could mean Pinot Noir, but a more interesting alternative would be the new trendy Italian red, Etna Rosso from Sicily, which is mostly made from a local grape called Nerello Mascalese. This smells like dried flowers but it’s fruity enough on the palate to match this sauce but finishes savoury. ◆

he Countess of Winchelsea was ill. Her malady was her grief following the death of her husband, and in the seventeenth century this was recognised as an illness. You could literally die ‘of melancholy’ and it is recorded as a cause of death in bills of mortality. But luckily the Countess’s doctor. Sir Hans Sloane. had a cure. and the medicine he prescribed was chocolate. Today we no longer believe that chocolate can cure a broken heart; we think it more likely to injure you through a heart attack. Yet everyone can recognise its comforting, warming, enlivening qualities, whether eaten or drunk. And some of its qualities remain the same: the Stuarts and Georgians served chocolate to their courtiers as a treat, to thank them for coming to court and for serving the monarch, just as today, if someone looks after your pet while you’re away, you’re more likely than not to buy them a box of chocs. But chocolate to the Countess of Winchelsea would have been a drink rather than a food: something rather like our hot chocolate but with added

FOOD & DRINK / RECIPES extras such as port wine or egg. Chocolate in Britain initially became popular at the court of Charles II, whose accounts include payments to a servant ‘for grinding Cococ Nuts’. He also favoured chocolate flavoured with exotic ingredients, like ambergris (from sperm whales) and civet (from the glands of an African cat). Charles II was following the fashion of the Spanish royal family who had good access to the ‘Cococ Nuts’ of their conquered Mayan and Aztec subjects in Central America. Among Charles ll’s successors. Queen Anne was such an enthusiastic chocolate drinker that she consumed 90 pint pots of chocolate each month – although one hopes that her ladiesin-waiting helped her out. However, we are talking about the queen sometimes referred to disrespectfully as ‘Square-Coffin’. Because of her great weight at death, her coffin had

to be carried by 12 Yeomen of the Guard. The history sections of this book have been brilliantly written by Polly Putnam, one of our curators at Historic Royal Palaces, who was tasked with researching the history of the fantastically interesting ‘Chocolate Kitchen’ at Hampton Court. Built for King William Ill and Queen Mary II in around 1691, these rooms were re-opened to our visitors in 2014, and in them you can learn the full story of how chocolate was prepared and drunk at court. After spending a couple of years in this odd corner of the past, Polly can legitimately claim to be among the world’s very few experts in the history of chocolate. I’m sure you’ll find her insights a treat. ◆

here’s no doubt that chocolate is a favourite ingredient in today’s royal household. Both Prince William and his grandmother are partial to a slice of Chocolate Fridge Cake, while in 2006 Prince Charles hosted a surprise celebration for his mother’s 8Oth birthday at which guests enjoyed a simple English menu followed by a sumptuous slice of chocolate sponge layered with a Highgrove fruit filling. While you won’t be able to pick Highgrove’s berries to make this cake. it is every bit as rich and decadent as its inspiration. T

Knives and forks with fantastical twisted handles and thin stemmed champagne flutes crafted from gleaming silver are positioned strategically around the room. Still, I remain fixated on an object in front of me. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what it is. The base is a box with a small display screen that looks almost like a kitchen scale, but with a ‘T’-shaped contrivance protruding out of the middle, all of it coated in silver. ‘Is it a lamp?’ someone posits. ‘It can’t be, where’s the bulb?’ ‘Look, it’s definitely a scale,’ someone else says firmly. ‘Then what’s that bit sticking out of it?’ We're baffled. Eventually, Charlotte, the PR, drifts past. ‘I’m sorry,’ I offer, feeling foolish, ‘but what actually is this?’ ‘Ah,’ said Charlotte. ‘That is actually for weighing falcons.’ I have come to the workshop and offices of Grant Macdonald, the renowned silversmith, partly to attend the unveiling of an incredible clock crafted by the company and partly to take a peek behind

THEY have become KNOWN FOR their beautiful bespoke WORK the scenes and see what actually goes on in a modern silversmiths. We have been told that we can try our hand at some practical silversmithing ourselves, although as someone who is likely to injure themselves making toast this prospect filled me with equal parts of excitement and fear.
Our tour begins in the offices, where a mysterious looking machine is whirring away. In the pre-3D printer world, the first step involved in silversmithing was to make an incredibly detailed model out of wax, a process that could take hours, even days, and if a client wanted something altered, the process had to begin again. But now comprehensive 3D models are produced by superimposing wafer-thin layers of plastic on top of one another to the specifications of a model designed on a computer. The printer itself is utterly mesmerising – watching something on a screen appear fully made, seemingly out of thin air – approaches Star Trek levels of futuristic. Though it soon becomes clear that this is one of the only parts of silversmithing to introduce new technology in hundreds of years. In the workshop are wooden workbenches, weathered tools and even an anvil. We are taken through the process step by step, meeting Grant Macdonald’s team of highly skilled craftsmen, each of whom is dedicated to a different stage of the operation until we reach a tray of silver keyrings, each bearing our name. It is upon us, the moment I had been dreading: audience participation. The hard part has already been taken care of (the actual shaping and crafting of the keyring) we would just be finishing it off.

HOMES & INTERIORS / BEHIND THE SCENES The process of filing the silver to smooth out scratches
I am led to a workstation, handed a file and told to sand off the scratch marks on the silver that will prevent it from becoming smooth and shiny when it is polished. This is a pleasant surprise – the only thing I have to worry about here is accidentally sanding off my gel manicure. We are instructed to hold the keyring against the wooden edge of the bench firmly and file in one direction away from our fingers. I feel confident and appear to be making good progress for a few minutes, but then my fingers begin to cramp and I can't hold the keyring without flexing vigorously. Once we have given it the old college try, the (incredibly encouraging) professionals take over. Our next task is to solder the ring at the top of the keyring closed. This sounds far more hazardous. We are lead into the room containing the anvil I spied earlier and, sure enough, it soon becomes evident that this task will involve both fire and a level of coordination that I severely lack. I let the others take over and emerge with all ten fingers intact. The keyrings are then taken to be polished as we move on to bubbles and nibbles in the room where the clock is displayed. Grant Macdonald have become known for their beautiful bespoke work,

taking commissions from clients around the world and for luxury car brand Aston Martin. The stunning Imperial Clock is worth £100,000 and is inspired by the 18th Century French Ormolu Clock; it took 320 hours of handcraftsmanship and 80 hours polishing and is now on display in the Grant Macdonald store in Harrods. Grant himself joins us for a glass of champagne (served in a silver flute) after our tour and shares some of his stories, telling us about the first thing he ever made in silver (a small spoon that he still has to this day). His accomplishments range from the sublime to the fantastical – from the reconstruction of the orb and cross that sits atop the Church of Our Lady in Dresden (originally destroyed in the bombings of WWII) to the crafting of eight foot tall palm trees for a palace. Each project is imbued with the precision, creativity and expertise of this London-based team of craftsmen, who are emerging as one of the premier silversmiths in the world. And as far as I'm concerned, anyone responsible for designing a falcon scale is well on the road to greatness. u

n the early days of parenthood, mother and baby are often inseparable, but as little ones grow and (hopefully) learn to rest independently, you’ll probably want some way to stay connected while you get on with all the things you’ve put aside for the last weeks and months. Step forward the BT Video Baby Monitor 7000 – which is so much more than a glorified walkie-talkie. With HD video and sound, you can hear and see your baby clearly - even the tiniest breath comes through loud and clear – and a handy thermometer alerts you if the temperature falls or rises beyond predefined levels. The unit can also play a string of soothing lullabies or nature sounds and project a pretty light-show onto walls or ceilings, so baby has something to distract her if she awakes wondering, ‘Where’s Mum?’ The bad side? No more excuses for not doing the washing-up… ◆

STATE Versus PRIVATE he argument of state versus private education is T unending and inconclusive. It is perhaps simplest just to apply the idea that ‘one size does not fit all’. Finances are often the driver in the decision of whether to place your child in a state or independent school. To privately educate a child from nursery through to university costs an average of £150,000. This exorbitant figure means it is an option available to few. As such, mixing and matching between state and private schools during the formative years can provide a valuable balance. Supporting a child at state school with private tuition can also be a successful way of ensuring they have access to one-to-one teaching. In spite of much controversy, independent schools do have a higher success rate of pupils going on to higher education than the state sector. As such, if only an option for sixth form, going private at this stage could be hugely beneficial for your child. ◆

hen a friend bought Mandarin flash cards for her nanny to brandish in front of her dribbling toddler, I thought she was mad. But check the internet and you will see she is not alone. Mandarin flash cards, printable pdfs, downloadable apps – they are all there at the click of a button, every tool needed to turn your pre-school child into a world-beating Sinologue before their fifth birthday. The government announced last year that it is putting Mandarin on the national curriculum and training 1,200 more teachers in the language by the end of the decade. Independent schools are ahead of the state sector, with many now including Mandarin either within the curriculum or offered as an extra-curricular activity. But Mandarin for toddlers? Do parents really want their infants mastering what is now the world’s most spoken language before they are out of nappies? The people behind the UK’s first bilingual Mandarin-English day nursery certainly think so. Hatching Dragons, housed in a church hall around the corner from the Barbican, opened in May. It is much like any other nursery, except that the staff are predominantly Chinese and they employ a 50:50 split between English and Mandarin when speaking to the children. Hatching Dragons is the brainchild of educational consultant Cennydd John. He had the idea for the nursery when he was looking for childcare for his young son. “I started thinking about what I would value in a nursery environment. I’d been to China, studied at a Chinese university but then I’d struggled with the language since. And so it dawned on me that having an immersion experience between the ages of nought and five would be a way for my son to pick up Mandarin immediately and naturally.”
85 CHIS_AUG15_Education.indd 85
Mandarin is not ‘taught’ at Hatching Dragons, there is no hot-housing or formal lessons, the idea is that the toddlers will simply pick it up through exposure at such a young age. This is nothing new, many nurseries in London offer the same experience with French or German. And well-heeled families have long hired nannies who speak a foreign language for their young families. Charles Bonas, founder of blue-chip educational consultancy Bonas MacFarlane, says they are placing more and more Mandarin-speaking nannies with families, particularly in Singapore and Hong Kong where the family’s mother tongue is English or Cantonese. The most obvious reason for Mandarin to be in vogue is that as Chinese reaches economic superpower status, parents want to give their children the edge in a competitive world. Nearly 17% of the planet’s population are native Mandarin speakers, while English speakers come in at 5%. Native French speakers? They barely scrape in at 1%. In many ways, the UK is behind the curve on offering English-Mandarin bilingual nurseries – there are already more than 180 in the US. ◆ hatching-dragons.com

he thoughts that go through your mind while standing on a swaying bridge over a ravine, staring at your feet to judge your next step, are many and varied. ‘Why am I doing this?’, ‘If I fall will the safety wire hold?’ And, finally, ‘Did I leave my hair straighteners on?’ That last one I attribute to hysteria and the willingness to worry about anything other than plunging downwards into the river below. I was in Casela Nature Park, a reserve in the western part of Mauritius, home to a profusion of wildlife that offers several different activities, including quad biking, canyon swinging and ziplining. My driving skills aren’t up to much and, frankly, canyon swinging sounds petrifying, so ziplining it was. That was how I found myself, dressed incredibly impractically in a dress and leggings, midbridge and practically mid-panic attack. For many, Mauritius represents the epitome of beach holiday relaxation.
Miles of white coastline, crystal waters and blazing sun make it a tourist magnet, renowned for its luxury hotels. One such hotel is the Royal Palm Mauritius, located in the North near the town of Grand Baie, where I stayed for five days. Living up to it’s name, scores of swaying palm trees populate the charming and tranquil resort, whose stunning suites look out over the beach. My room was an Ocean Suite that came with a postcardperfect view of said palms and the sea beyond. The generous terrace (complete with table and chairs) was ideal for enormous room-service breakfasts and snoozing in the shade in the afternoons. Equipped with three restaurants, each serving a different type of cuisine, the temptation to stay in the resort is huge. Those seeking ultimate relaxation could easily wander down from their rooms, straight onto the beach and stretch out one of the loungers reserved for Royal Palm guests. If a thirst hits mid-morning, they could order a fresh coconut water,

TRAVEL / ISLAND LIFE ADVENTURE wasn’t A WORD I HAD previously ASSOCIATED with the ISLAND served in an enormous hollowed out coconut then for lunch, stroll down the beach to the discreetly positioned Le Bar Plage. This beautifully appointed restaurant’s menu comprises fish so fresh it’s practically wriggling, in addition to Western classics like steak tartare and Caesar salad. The afternoon can be spent in the Clarins spa, an oasis nestled in the secluded garden behind the hotel, trying out treatments (I recommend the full body massage) and being generally pampered. A host of watersports is also on offer for those after a more active afternoon; waterskiing and sailing are
particularly popular and the ocean is so warm that falling in is all part of the fun. Balmy evenings can be whiled away at the open-air bar on the main terrace, listening to the live band, before heading down to La Brezza, the hotel’s superb Italian restaurant, run by esteemed chef Alessandro Morino. My only advice? Eat a light lunch because Alessandro serves up a feast and you won’t want to leave a bite. As I mentioned before, Mauritius has luxury and leisure in spades. But what about adventure? It wasn’t a word I had previously associated with the island but, as I hung, hundreds of metres up, suspended from a wire, I decided I should rethink this. Ziplining aside, Mauritius has a vibrancy and vitality that it owes in part to its rich cultural heritage and diverse history. Originally colonised by the Dutch, it was then taken over by France who renamed it Isle de France before it was invaded by the British in 1810, who promptly changed the name back. It wasn’t until 1968 that Mauritius gained independence, although the French influence has remained strong. Locals, many of whose forbears came to the island from both Africa and Asia tend to speak French and English but generally converse in Mauritian Creole. Walking through both the small town of Grand Baie and the capital, Port Louis, there is much to see and, without generalising too much, an incredibly friendly populace to guide you through. On my day trip to Port Louis, I spent time roaming through the market, soaking up the sights
CATHERINE ZIPLINING IN CASELA PARK
and smells and doing a little souvenir shopping – I was sorely tempted to purchase a rather fetching puffer fish lamp but resisted the urge. Though less fraught than the bazaar in Istanbul, the market is similarly home to some real treasures and, if properly investigated, could easily yield interior design gold (puffer fish lamps notwithstanding). It was, however in the smaller Grand Baie that I hit shopping paydirt with several shops selling bargain cashmere clothes and other textiles. In terms of food, fresh fish and seafood occupy every menu. For a casual lunch in Grand Baie, I would recommend the Beach House for its devilishly good battered shrimp and atmospheric live music, as well as its breezy beachside location. My experiences, both flying through the air in Casela Park and trawling through the markets in Port Louis, as well as soaking up the sun and sailing on the sea, ticked every box on the holiday agenda, with more still to be experienced. The terrain and climate of the island mean that the mountains are covered lush greenery, and are perfect for hiking and trekking. Those with a penchant for bathing in waterfalls can visit the Tamarind or Black River Falls or perhaps the brilliantly named Pamplemousses Botanical Garden. If you fancy a day trip off the island, catamarans go from Grand Baie to the small islands located north of the mainland. Whether you’re looking for adventure or a break from reality, Mauritius has it all. ◆ u Suite prices for September 2015. Prices are based on booking at least 30 days prior to travel. There will also be the opportunity to learn about dining and court etiquette and we invite you to relax and picnic in the picturesque setting of the East Gardens, where you might even spot the Queen and her court taking in the air. Entry is included in a palace admission ticket and this year we are celebrating our 500th anniversary so there’s never been a better time to explore the rest of the palace. ◆ ● Queen Anne’s Summer Palace 8-9 August, Hampton Court Palace hrp.org.uk/hamptoncourtpalace

t can be hard to feel completely at ease in your home when you’re surrounded by too much stuff. Whether you just need a good clear out or whether you’re at an important stage of your life like moving house or downsizing, Shurgard Self-Storage can help you out. Here are Shurgard’s top tips on helping de-clutter your house and your mind:
One step at a time e-cluttering can seem like an overwhelming task. D Take it one step at a time. Make a list of all the areas you want to de-clutter and do them step by step; don’t put pressure on yourself to get them all done in one fell go.
VA L U E
Ditch the store-drobe hances are those legwarmers won’t be C coming back into fashion, so why are they still lingering around your wardrobe? To identify the pieces of clothing you can really live without, hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. After you wear an item, return it to the wardrobe with the hanger facing the correct direction. After a while you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you can afford to discard. Winter clothes take up a lot of room in the wardrobe – change your wardrobe with the seasons
Feel at ease as soon as you walk through the door our hallway is a prime clutter zone. Shoes, coats, Y letters, and umbrellas can instantly make you feel stressed before you’ve even had a chance to put your bag down. An entrance hall should feel big, open and clutter-free so you feel an instant sense of calm when you walk through your front door.

and put your winter woollies away for a rainy day. Store them away in well-labelled boxes under the bed, put them in a Shurgard storage unit or use vacuum bags to store them away until spring time. And if you’re moving house... e-cluttering before putting your house on the D market could mean the difference between a quick sale and months of uncertainty. A clutter-free home can make it more appealing to prospective buyers, which could ultimately result in a higher sale price. Consider moving some of your personal items and leaving just the bare essentials. Although certain ornaments and trinkets may be to your taste, they might not be to potential buyers! ◆

IN THEIR OWN
WORDS
JULIET WHITE Sales Manager Askew Road, Finlay Brewer Photography
R E B ECCA N O O N A N
I
f I seem familiar to some of you it may be from my appearance in Take That’s Babe video or, indeed, from the time I was spotted by a photographer on the King’s Road and persuaded to star on the front cover of Hair magazine as a Princess Diana-alike, pearl earrings and all. Not as easy as you might think for a committed punk! However, in reality, it is more likely that you have seen me trundling around on my bike or in the park with my gorgeous dogs, Lady and Red. I started my working life at Benton & Bowles before moving to Imagicians, where I actually did some work including working with Michael Aspel and the prepolitically aware John Stapleton on the SAS TV campaigns. I left to become a freelance video producer and got paid (well paid!) to travel the world and have fun (lots of fun!). I got married, had three fantastic kids and discovered Sri Lanka, which I loved so much I upped sticks and opened a B&B there. This idyllic existence came to an end when the tsunami hit. For the first time in five years, I had decided to spend Christmas in the UK. Had I not, there is a very large chance that my family and I would no

longer be here. To this day I feel very connected to this tragedy as whilst I lived, many friends of mine did not. Returning to live in the UK, I moved to Devon and bought and sold properties around Totnes until a local agent asked if I would consider coming to work for them… and so my path to Finlay Brewer began. My kids wanted to be in London, I wanted to be with them, and it wasn’t long before I joined Finlay Brewer to work in their newly opened Askew Road branch. Living just off the Askew Road, I already knew the area inside out including plenty of the people and, loving the fact that Finlay Brewer is all about being local, independent and deeply involved with the community, I was delighted to become a member of the team. Over the last two and a half years property prices around the Askew Road have superseded
expectation; some houses have doubled in price. The popularity of the area is echoed in the types of shops that are opening including Cocktail and J W Beeton which sit well alongside other established independents such as The Ginger Pig and Askew Wine. If shops reflect an area, Askew Road is full of people who love the finer things in life! W12 as a whole continues to flourish. Westfield is doubling in size (at last we are going to have a John Lewis), Soho House is opening a club at the old BBC TV centre, the opening of Crossrail is high on the buying agenda and investment in the area is plain to see (if noisy and dusty at times!). The connections you make in this job are amazing (I recently had an applicant who it transpired had sold her house to my parents in Sussex). Buying a property can be an extraordinarily emotional experience and sometimes my role can be as much about listening to our clients’ worries and anxieties as the facts of the property deal. I feel very lucky to have found Finlay Brewer. My eccentricities coupled with my desire to make the sales process as positive as possible is a good fit with the ideals of this interesting and dedicated company. u

HOME TO A FAMOUS HOUSE HISTORIAN
or anyone with architectural leanings, discovering your house is ‘in Pevsner’ – a definitive series of books about England’s historic buildings – is the next best thing to a blue plaque. The Buildings of England, a 46-volume set that lists important houses county-bycounty, is seen as the most authoritative source on the subject. The author was Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, a writer, art historian and fan of Victorian architecture, who founded The Victorian Society and lived in this red-bricked terrace in Wildwood Terrace, London. Pevsner moved here in 1936 and loved the Victorian three-bedroomed house so much he stayed until his death in 1983. Now on the market for £2.8m. u Savills 020 7472 5036; savills.co.uk

FAMOUS PLACES There is hardly a square mile of London that doesn’t hide a plethora of celebrity homes or historic addresses and every month a clutch of them come up for sale. Here are the more recent ones on the market that can claim famous connections. Words NI G EL L EW I S

ir Elton might be known S for his many glamorous pads dotted around the globe but his childhood home was far from that. Until the age of 11 he lived in this north London semi on Pinner Hill Road in Middlesex. Then known as Reg Dwight he hammered away at the ivories in his family’s three-bedroom home which is now on the market for £525,000. Some of the décor appears to be original including the kitchen and 1970s style carpets, so there’s a fair amount of updating to do. Current owner Bill Purcell said at one stage he would pocket up to £2,000 a year from film crews eager to capture images of Sir Elton’s former home. He is now selling up after 40 years, which means one of these

“I can still hear you saying you would never break the chain.” Actually, Fleetwood Mac sang it wrong! We will break the chain, just like we sped it along for Rosie. It’s this attention to the small things that come together to make the biggest differences. #smallthingsbigdifferences aspire.co.uk

MOST SATISFYING TRANSACTION I’VE HAD:
I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE:
A house in St. Leonard’s Terrace nearly 15 years ago, which sold for what was then a record price. I regularly see the buyers, who love living there, and the price paid has long been forgotten!
A property with a basement where a dancefloor rises out of a swimming pool… space efficient, and slightly James Bond!

gathered pace in time for its completion, has prompted a wave of investment and price increases in Bayswater, Paddington and Queensway prices are expected to increase by 37% in Paddington by 2020. The number of new developments has attracted an influx of city professionals and families into places like Notting Hill and Queensway, while large numbers of converted traditional Georgian and Victorian townhouses promote
luxurious, lateral living across the leafy Bayswater area. The rising sterling and taxation changes have not deterred the stream of investment since May. A 41% increase in residential construction activity in 2014 has underlined the need for expansion this year to maintain London’s international appeal. u

recent let was all about a poodle called Gucci. The property was an apartment on Kensington High Street. The landlord approached us and we instantly had a client in mind. She was unable to find a property as landlords wouldn’t accept her with her poodle. We convinced the landlord that renting to a dog owner wasn’t a problem but the viewing was still unusual. You

see, Gucci had to like the apartment too. Thankfully, after sniffing around, he decided that it met with his approval. We requested an eight week deposit (rather than six) and the landlord was delighted as the tenant wanted to bring her own furnishings, saving him money. Landlord, tenant and Gucci are very happy!

What are your favourite properties right now? I love our Fernshaw Road property (pictured) as it offers stunning design based around light and ceiling heights. I also really like Redcliffe Gardens (attached) which has classic proportions, a lovely finish and a sun drenched garden and roof terrace. Market predictions? The classic summer dip will not be as noticeable as usual; I see the autumn market being particularly strong as buyers return to the market following the election result. ◆

In my area (SW3, 5, 7 and 10) properties of all types, up to about £700,000, are currently flying out of the door, as are two or three bedrooms under £1.2m, although these are becoming increasingly rare in RBKC. increases more of the buyers are from overseas (though often they have been UK residents for several years and are comfortable in the market). International buyers tend to prefer lateral spaces, with high ceilings and lots of light. Some countries have stigmas about living on the lower ground floor or being too high up in a building without a lift. To summarise, our most in demand properties at the higher levels are modernised, lateral, first floor flats in period buildings with good transport links. These features make them ideal for both homes and pied a terres. ◆

not always one to believe everything estate agents tells me, I set out to do my own research. One thing is for sure; London has seen aggressive price rises recently, and even the usually cautious Land Registry puts them at 10.9% this year. Also, the capital’s average house price, it says, is expected to go over the half a million pound mark soon. So, to the research. There are currently 491 homes for sale at between £1m and £1.25 million in London and they’re distribution across the capital makes for interesting reading. While anyone outside London might think up to £1.25m would buy

you a palace anywhere in the UK, much of London is too expensive to include properties in this band. Central London is a no-go zone that includes Chelsea plus many streets in Fulham and much of Shepherd’s Bush. Also, don’t bother in Paddington, Notting Hill, swathes of North London (the first one is to be found in Golders Green), Chalk Farm, Camden and even Wapping. u

n estate agent recently told me that if you’re after a four-bedroom house not too far from central London on a smart street and with a garden then you’ll need a budget of £1m to £1.25m these days. After a substantial pause to digest this information I asked her which patch of London she covered and, perhaps more surprisingly, the answer was South West London – surely not? Several phone calls to other agents across London confirmed her statement to be correct. But, as I’m

The answer is, anywhere outside the triangle of central London. This runs south of the river from Greenwich to East Sheen before running north across the river up to Hampstead and then back down through Islington before returning to Greenwich. Anywhere inside this triangle is pretty much bereft of four-bedroom houses at this price – unless you count the occasional ex-council house that pops up. And if you’re looking for the greatest choice then you might want to talk to my agent in SW London – because 176 of the homes in this price band are in this part of London, or 35% of the total – so it won’t be long before south of the river catches up with its northern neighbour. u
