ctober is art month. London's art fairs return en masse with their wide assortment of works by new as well as established artists. This year's Frieze comes with a strong focus on women in art in the wake of the release of some miserable statistics. Just 22 per cent of solo shows in London last year featured women artists, and 70 per cent of all artists shown in galleries across the world are men – this despite women art students outnumbering men. So Frieze is female this year, while the Other Art Fair and the Affordable Art Fair both champion the lesser known and the new artists. In this issue we're featuring some pieces of advice for new collectors as well as highlights from all the shows. We visit a London home designed with a view to displaying art; we focus on Amsterdam's stylish Pulitzer Hotel, which has its own art collector's suite and we look at the children's illustrators who have adapted their artwork for fabrics and wallpaper. So it's an arty issue – though we also focus on an eclectic mix of subjects including Jonathan Saunders' new rug collection, board games, gadgets that don't make much noise, desks, floors and kitchen essentials. We hope you enjoy the magazine.

utumn arrives just in time for Frieze Art Fair, which turns all eyes onto the contemporary art world in and amongst the blazing burnt leaves of Regents Park. With its robust sales and topnotch roster of galleries it’s easy to see how London’s creative curiosity is piqued by this colossal contemporary art circus. This year Frieze London, the contemporary edition of the two fairs, reveals a fresh line up of 160 participating galleries, with a dedicated section around the theme of Social Work. It’s a development from the hugely successful Sex Works theme last year which focused on radical feminists. This year a panel of female art historians and critics are choosing 10 prominent women artists who explore the themes of identity, labour and visibility and neatly slipped under the radar of recognition during the 1980s when male artists dominated the market. The gender discrepancies are hard to ignore, with the highest price for a living female work of art being by Yayoi Kusama at $7.1million and for a male artist being Jeff Koons at $58.4 million. This year’s fair could be seen as a collective response to the hard hitting fact that 70% of all artists shown are men, so the scales are set for a balancing act. Aside from the expected string of blue-chip galleries, there is a particularly stellar line up from the younger galleries in London who have very much been rising through the ranks and gaining in confidence each year. Some star attractions include The Sunday Painter, Arcadia Missa and Seventeen Gallery who will be entering the main section

“Critics are choosing a cluster of 10 prominent women artists ” after many years of being able to showcase their works in the subsidised emerging gallery section Focus for galleries under the age of 12 years. Rana Begum will have a solo show with Kate MacGarry coinciding with the jewel-coloured sculpture she is presenting in the Frieze Sculpture park. Her work explores how colour, light and form interact and the laminated glass work throws an exquisite rainbow onto the grass of Regent’s Park. Mary Mary Gallery from Glasgow will include works by Milano Chow who makes elegantly eloquent drawings of female figures set within neoclassical frames. A Robin Hood-style tax began at Art Basel this year and will continue at the inaugural Los Angeles version of Frieze next year with more established galleries essentially subsidising younger galleries. This shows just how integral these younger galleries are to the fabric of the art world, and the best way to support their younger artists is by beginning to collect their works. There’s a whole host of advice on starting a collection which is much more appealing with the lower price points that you can find on these younger gallery booths. A very good place to start is with Alexandra Donaldson from Kaleidoscope who helps advise collectors on what to buy specifically from emerging galleries and encourages a closer connection with the artists, collecting artists and not just their objects. In this way when you buy works, you are helping shape the artist’s career trajectory.

TIPS FOR ASPIRING ART COLLECTORS G ET TO KNOW TH E ARTI ST

It is important to find out as much as you can about their status and background, their inspiration and motivations, and their techniques and materials.

EXAMINE THE MATERIALS

Drawings can be a great way to buy an original piece at a more affordable price, because price points can vary due to the cost of the medium and materials used. If it is a painting you are after, keep in mind that acrylics could have a lower price tag than oils.

BE CONFIDENT IN ITS ORIGINALITY

All artworks sold at an Affordable Art Fair, or on affordableartfair.com, are original or limited edition. When it comes to limited edition prints, those made or designed by a maker are printed by hand and this is why they are usually more expensive than a giclée, which is printed by a machine.

he Other Art Fair will be celebrating its 30th edition by taking over two Central London locations for the first time since its launch in 2011. The weekend of 4-7 October will see the fair return to the historic Victoria House in Bloomsbury, with a second exciting new programme at The College at Old Central St Martins on Southampton Row. Visitors will be greeted by a playful, psychedelic entrance installation by artist Hattie Stewart in her signature doodlebombing style. Alongside a host of interactive performances, both fairs offer free kids’ activities, live music and a superb restaurant and bar, guaranteeing a unique and immersive experience. This year’s guest artists are The Connor Brothers who will be creating a series of prints and two installations exploring men’s mental health in collaboration with mental health charity, Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). Previous guest artists include Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk, Martin Parr, Polly Morgan and Ben Eine. The programme will include a mix of works by the highest number of artists ever exhibited at The Other Art Fair, with 140 artists on the verge of global recognition. Featuring sculpture, works on paper, photography and painting, 140 contemporary artists from across the globe have been handpicked by a respected selection committee including Cob Gallery co-founder and director Victoria Williams, arts broadcaster Kate Bryan, internationally renowned curator

What makes an Albion bath unique? ..Quite a few things actually! We started making fine, free standing baths over 20 years ago using our own material called Iso-Enamel. It’s our own invention and gives benefits other materials can’t provide. The surface is lustrous and the construction is solid to the touch. Our material will keep your water hotter for longer than other baths, meaning you can have that long soak you always dreamed of.

As for weight, an Albion bath is half the weight of an equivalent cast iron or fireclay bath. To suit your design ideas, the exterior of most Albion baths can be finished to a colour of your choice - and with over 50 models available, we’ll have you spoilt for choice. Request our 276 page brochure to find out more about our baths, taps, showers and bathroom furniture.

THE RUNWAY WALK HOME previews fashion designer Jonathan Saunders’ new collaboration with The Rug Company Words P E A R L B OY D

C elebrated fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, renowned for his innovative use of print, pattern and colour, has collaborated with The Rug Company for a second collection of handmade rugs. Incorporating eight new rug designs, including four runners, the collection represents an exploration of the perception of colour.

Saunders has been exploring translucency and light and how new colours can be created through this process, working with transparent layers of glass and resin to create the composition of the final designs. A signature bright modernist palette has evolved for this second collection with the unexpected addition of neutral tones of bone, clay and silver. Combining a series of deceptively simple square and rectangular forms in different shades of grey, Clark is an abstract interpretation of a tower. The monochrome mix is perfectly balanced so that the structure of the composition is clearly perceived. The subtle greyscale achieved is a remarkable feat by our dye master, with light neutrals being the hardest colours to match. Witton’s composition consists of planes of solid colours which overlap to create new tones and play with the illusion of perception. The design is available in grey with a shock of

cerulean, as well as a kaleidoscopic palette of lemon yellow, intense orange, burnt ochre, turquoise and candy pink. Helio and Lewitt use patterns which evoke the process of weaving fabric, a classic starting point for Saunders, with bands which are interwoven instead of overlaid, criss-crossing over each other, to give the appearance of weaving. Each runner is available in a bright and a monochrome palette, allowing the viewer to focus on the careful composition of each design and the effect of colour on its appearance. Herringbone Neutral is a graphic transformation of the weaving technique, combining a neutral colour palette of cream and silver silk and wool yarns. The tones represent a departure from the bright colours which have become synonymous with Saunders’ designs, meaning that the focus has now become depth. Each design is handcrafted by weavers in Kathmandu, using fine Tibetan wool and silk. therugcompany.com

here’s no doubt that the personalised architecture and design service, Rundell Associates, create eye-catching and different designs. And the latest project from the company that have created state-of-the-art schools and Tuscan Villas is no different. A refurbishment and extension of this west London House, the finished product is immediately captivating with its sleek, minimalist exterior, seemingly more of a Moroccan riad than a London home. Yet nothing prepares you for what can only be described as an explosion of colour inside. And we’re not talking safe hues of royal blue and emerald green emanating from a tastefully (but subtly)

placed picture. We’re talking lime green sofas, hot pink lamps, and art-deco carpets, all on a sterile white background to create the impression of a blank canvas upon which a particularly whacky artist has been let loose. What makes the project all the more surprising still, is that it works. So what of the man behind it? Rundell Associates founder Mike Rundell believes that: “Colour is an essential consideration, but it has to be kept in perspective. For some projects, especially where the client has an existing collection of art and artefacts, the building has to provide the right background for that collection without seeking to compete with the objects on display. For that reason, most art collector’s houses are very neutral”. Rundell clearly has an excellent understanding of what makes a building work,

made all the more surprising considering he has no formal architectural qualifications to speak of. He attributes his love of beautiful architecture to his youth, growing up in a “very grand Edwardian Hotel in the Swiss Alps”, his London home in Berkeley Square, schooling at Westminster and to his time at Oxford University. And yet, he started his early career as an oilfield engineer in the Middle East. While he was there, Rundell began to help his father with the plans for their small family home in Cornwall, drawing up plans and posting them back to England. After a few years in Egypt, Rundell had saved enough money to go back to Art College and study Fine Art. He says, “I wanted to design houses to pay my way through life whilst simultaneously creating works of art.” Armed with degrees in Engineering and Fine Art, he feels that all an aspiring architect needs is “a true understanding

of the way that space works, combined with visual curiosity, creative ambition and an understanding of structures.” Despite his modest tone, Rundell had his first big break working on the infamous Notting Hill restaurant Pharmacy with Damien Hirst in 1996 and from there he set up Rundell Associates in 1997. The company prides itself on its ability to work closely with the client and provide a bespoke and genuinely unique design; they have no House Style. And so it is with this colourful project. Rundell says it was “bound by the client’s determination to create a space that would reflect her own tastes completely; an appreciation of exotic colour, a love of books and her back-

ground of travel. There was no compromise but the house had to be essentially practical. Our first challenge was to devise a floorplan that eliminated numerous long corridors and made use of each square foot wisely.” The result: a practical family home that at once combines an “esoteric art collection” with a distinctly exotic Moroccan touch. With interiors from Tim Gosling and landscaping from Gavin MacWilliam, it would be hard for anyone to argue that the house is not a work of art in itself, perfect both for long summer evenings on the softly lit terrace outside or a cup of tea in the sleek but cosy kitchen area. It is, in fact, a true testament to the Rundell Associates ethos that “great design appears effortless, inevitable and inspiring”, and Rundell’s own background in Fine Art, that “great art and great architecture share a common factor: they have to be experienced to be appreciated.” The project is eye-catching, yet it is not an art gallery and does not function as such. Instead, it exhibits the on-trend maximalist interiors trend, attention to detail and undoubtedly homely touches. As for the where Rundell is headed next? “I love new challenges. If anyone would like a great Motorway Service Station designed then please give me a call!” rundellassociates.com

By 1952, roughly 200,000 radios designed by the Eameses had been sold by various manufacturers. One design, however, never went into production: an elegant table radio with a moulded plywood case, whose compact shape and austere, more technical look were unusual for the time. The production of Eames radios was discontinued in the early 1950s but now Vitra has joined the Eames Office to revive the design of this compact radio. Encased in an elegant walnut cabinet and equipped with up-to-date technology by the British manufacturer REVO, the Eames Radio today bears witness to the designer couple’s unwavering belief in progress.

Charles and Ray Eames were keen travellers and brought back numerous objects and accessories from their travels to furnish and decorate their private home. One of these items is a black bird figure that has stood in their living room for over 50 years. In collaboration with the Eames Office, Vitra is now issuing a version of the Eames House Bird in dark walnut with a clear lacquer finish. The visible grain gives the wooden bird an authentic and natural look, which also highlights the carefully handcrafted production process.

Girard brought a playfulness to 20th-century design that had been absent from the austere aesthetic of classic modernism. For these Table Runners, Vitra collaborated with the Girard family to select textile designs Broken Lines and Geometric E, developed in 1964 and 1971 respectively.

In the 1950s, George Nelson and his office conceived a range of everyday objects in the aim of bringing modern design to American homes. These included an extensive collection of unusual wall clocks. Re-edited by Vitra, the Popsicle Clock is a new addition. Comprising a structure of flat walnut rods, and striking metal hands in a white powder-coated finish, this model is a further example of the imaginative vision employed by George Nelson and his team with regard to shapes and materials.

In 1965 Girard was commissioned to design the New York restaurant La Reserve and created a series of charming metal figures that appear to be dancing: Silhouettes. The restaurant unfortunately never came into being, but the plans and drawings were preserved and are part of the Alexander Girard Collection held by the Vitra Design Museum. Together with the Girard family, Vitra decided to bring the Silhouettes to life – initially with the motifs Bull and Mermaid.

pening the rear of your property with wall-to-wall glazing is very popular at the moment. With the slimmest of sightlines, allowing maximum glass area, Fabco Sanctuary’s bespoke steel doors are a popular choice for people wanting to replace a brick wall with glazing. Coupled with their window sections and screen sets Fabco are able to produce larger screen assemblies to fit any space, no matter the size. And on a functional level, they are the only steel firm to achieve a certified B-thermal rating which means you’ll stay warmer in winter. At a luxury penthouse in Corbetts Wharf, Fabco designed, manufactured and installed bespoke steel double doors and shaped side screens leading from the client’s bedroom onto their rooftop terrace. This not only enabled the client to appreciate a stunning view of the Thames and London Bridge from their bedroom, but also flooded the room with natural light. Fabco also installed a statement piece at a home in Herne Hill. Spanning the width and

3 height of an open plan kitchen-living space, Fabco installed a bespoke set of Georgianstyle French doors completed with side panels and a fi xed top panel above. At South Hill Park (pictured above) Fabco created and fitted bespoke steel double doors and a screen set to span the height of the recently extended kitchen. Not only was this a ‘wow factor’ piece to look at but it also helps bring as much natural light into the kitchen as possible. fabcosanctuary.com

C O T TAG E INDUSTRY Founder of Cabbages and Roses, Christina Strutt has created a beautiful country home. HOME meets her Words K AT E G R I F F I N

F

ounder of quintessentially British fashion and homeware brand Cabbages and Roses, Christina Strutt, was just 24 when she forsook the high-octane glamour of life as a London journalist, working for Vogue Living, in favour of spending her days at Brook Cottage, once a mill used by Gregorian monks in Somerset. This was the apotheosis of the life she had, for so long, promoted in the magazine. The departure represented a transition in the exchange of not only of the single life for the married, but the urban for the bucolic. While it was neither deliberate nor conscious at the time, the trade-in of Vogue House for something more deeprooted and resonant in the rolling Somerset hills would ultimately re-angle the spotlight, training it in the direction of her own home life, as opposed to that of others. Cabbages & Roses would one day emerge as the expression of her life at Brook Cottage. The move, she cheerfully recalls, represented not only a thrilling adventure, but also an opportunity to play. Happily, for its part, Brook Cottage could scarcely have been more receptive as an experimental playground. Even the very first of her incremental changes—tailoring army surplus drapes, which happened to have blue roses on them, for the spare room—made it into the pages of Country Homes & Interiors magazine. This signaled once

It was simply and obviously the perfect country cottage

and for all that she was no longer cast in the role of temporary arbiter d’élégance at some of the most beautiful houses in the world. She was now the custodial guardian of one. “Cabbages & Roses came into being in the vegetable garden—which is still my obsession. All I ever wanted was to create something built around not just an idea, but a real life. Something that could be beautiful, that could move and charm, but that would be tangible, unfeigned, and sincere—keeping its sense of humour all the while.” The final characteristic in the Cabbages & Roses narrative is imperative, for it is inconceivable to think of Christina without imagining her smiling wryly or, more likely, collapsing into giggles. As each week slipped by, so some new domestic contrivance slipped accordingly into place. The parlour, for example, was once the kitchen, but the two rooms were swapped to enable the latter to be home to the fireplace, a detail that has, ever since, delighted Christina who had long harbored reveries of

a cosy hub of a kitchen, complete with roaring fire. This period of playful tinkering marked embryonic days of her home life becoming inexorably bound up with her work. Soon her continual interior alterations began to attract, within her own circles, those keen to ape not just her home but, you sense, her lifestyle. While this rewarding canvas has been re-imagined over decades of Strutt familial life— her son, daughter-in-law, grandson and granddaughter live in the cottage opposite — Christina insists that her style remains fundamentally unchanged. “I didn’t know about beautiful pared-down Swedish style and beautiful old white china in the early days, but I still love the checks and faded florals and tartan I used back then,” she says, sitting among a surfeit of cushions and textiles that

attest to this. “It has changed incalculable times over the years, but the spirit of Brook Cottage remains. It is the constant.” A gratifyingly hefty, medieval stone structure, Brook Cottage stands improbably picturesquely amid the undulating Somerset hills, just outside the city of Bath. In addition to its latest incarnation as the start and end point of Cabbages & Roses, the history of the house raises as many questions for a meditative Christina as those it articulately answers. “In many ways, we know so little about it, and that in itself is endlessly intriguing,” she reflects. “The vernacular architecture of the day and educated deduction point to it having been built in the 1500s, but it is difficult to date it precisely. What I find so captivating, though, is to imagine who lived here in the days before the renaissance, and how they lived here,” she says, before asking: “What have these old stones seen?” Whatever the narrative—real or imagined—Brook Cottage has, she considers, “kind walls,” a sentiment echoed by the woman who recently turned up on the doorstep to see the house to which she, along with some 20 other children, had been evacuated during World War II. “It seems that they’d lived on rabbits for the duration of the war. But somehow, they appear to have been happy here, despite all being crammed together in what is now my bedroom.” It is self-evident to anyone who crosses the threshold of Brook Cottage that it does indeed resonate with easy contentment. For Christina, it was, simply and obviously, “the perfect country cottage” upon first sight,

and also where she would be, enduringly, her happiest. For her children, it constituted the pastoral idyll from which they formed their world view. For her business, it would become the central core and the lifeblood. This deep and unswerving devotion has not waned. “That love is the linchpin,” says Christina. “Everyone comes back here. It is the meeting point of our lives.” Her latest favorite thing, she trills with unbridled enthusiasm, is the newest addition to the house: a celestially white studio. Built above the stable, it overlooks the same vegetable garden that gave rise to Cabbages & Roses, and it has replaced Christina’s kitchen table as her new hive of industry. “It is heaven, and just wonderful to have somewhere to go to that marks the beginning and the end to the day,” she effuses. That, in essence, encapsulates the spirit of Cabbages & Roses. The winding incremental changes made—not least the studio or the new gazebo that has reclaimed the courtyard and now provides a sitting room for summer—continue to inform the perennially growing business. And, as with the garden in which the business was conceived, beautiful pieces appear in the shop, only to be replaced—Mother Nature-like— just as soon as they’ve been bought with something new and equally exquisite. “I don’t understand how you can do a business that isn’t about what you love,” says Christina, underlining her guiding axiom. “You have to love it—it’s the only way you’ll ever be happy.”

ttolenghi is launching a stunning new luxury table linen range including hand-crafted table napkins, tea towels and limited edition tablecloths, all of them adorned with a hand-painted O motif by artist and longtime Ottolenghi collaborator Ivo Bisignano. The O Table napkins, O Tea towels and limited edition O Tablecloths are all made from the highest quality, Italian organic linen; woven in the traditional way on a shuttle loom in the northern Italian town of Bergamo. Not only are they beautifully designed and soft to the touch, they are easy to use and care for as they are machine washable. Ivo’s vision of family and art has been interpreted to the linens by using vibrant colours and an impulsive gesture of a brushstroke. “The hand-painted O brings art to the table as well as signals the shared table culture we believe in, which we hope to bring to your home with this elegant and playful range,” said Yotam Ottolenghi For the full-colour table napkins, the Italian artisans use a complex technique called negative printing to hand-paint the O onto the plain linen using a natural wax, which is followed by hand-painting the colour onto the entire fabric before washing the wax out of the fabric to reveal the negative O. The natural napkins are hand-painted in the traditional way, directly onto the fabric. Once the colour is dry and fixed through an environmentallyfriendly steaming process, it becomes vivid and alive.

The luxurious limited edition tablecloths are embellished with a series of linked Os running down the centre to create a table runner effect. The Os are hand printed onto the linen using hand-carved blocks of pear wood. Using a white, indigo and natural colour scheme, each cloth is beautifully packaged in a printed box that reflects the design and includes a signed card from the artist and article number, creating a truly unique piece. The tea towels are embellished with the same connecting Os as the tablecloth, and are available in red, indigo, saffron or green with white Os, a white background with indigo Os or a natural background with white Os. There will also be select tableware pieces from Ottolenghi restaurants available to buy online, including pieces from their soon to be launched artisan limited edition range. These beautiful pieces include coloured cake plates made in France by designers Jars Ceramistes. The plates have a matt finish and come in a range of eight beautiful shades such as rosemary, peach and fennel, all of which work well together as a set and are perfect for displaying Ottolenghi cakes. Dipped coloured salad plates have a part glazed, part matt finish and come in a range of colours including pea and peach, bringing vibrancy to the table. Glassware includes vibrant recycled green glass tumblers, made in Morocco, and zinc mint tea glasses and espresso glasses, designed by Fabrice Gibilaro for La Rochère. Serving platters are available in pearl oval-shaped and matt black rectangle-shaped. They are an integral part of the Ottolenghi table used to show

off beautiful salads. In the artisan limited edition range is the Mediterraneo serving platter, for which Ottolenghi commissioned London-based Italian ceramicist BABA to produce 40 platters. The blue glaze is lush, intense and variegated; reflecting the culture and people of the place it takes its name from. Generous in size, the platter is perfect for displaying and sharing delicious food with family and friends and each is numbered as edition with artist’s stamp and Ottolenghi logo. White texture bowls created by London based potter Iva Polachova. Iva has created a series of 22 beautifully hand-crafted bowls as part of Ottolenghi’s artisan limited edition range. The textured clay body is dipped in a calming white glaze, with some pieces revealing the natural hue beneath, providing unique markings and colour in the finished product. The bowls range from tiny to large and come in a variety of shapes. ottolenghi.co.uk/tableware/linen

In this family home, design is paramount but function is key

T

he homeowner’s brief was to create a ground floor space that worked for both everyday use and entertaining. In essence, this is a family home where design is paramount but function is key. Specialising in renovating Victorian and Georgian homes, London-based Mark Lewis Interior Design was appointed with the project transformation, and the result is a beautifully-designed kitchen, pantry and dining room, which makes the most of the available space and is brought together through the flooring. The project is characterised by bespoke cabinetry, rustic surfaces and accents of brass seen in the fixtures and fittings. The flooring plays a key role in the overall look, with the client opting for the oversized proportions of Hand Grade board in Neston, a warm mahogany hue with a highly textured and sculpted finish. The product was selected for its distinctive aged surface, which offered the appeal of a reclaimed aesthetic with the durability of an engineered oak construction. Designed for the most prestigious of projects, the Hand Grade flooring collection from Havwoods is a superior surface choice for creating maximum impact. Comprising of extra large boards, the engineered planks offer impressive proportions of almost half-a-metre in width and up to four metres in length. A high quality, high performance board, Hand Grande is available in eight distinctive finishes to ensure

a perfect fit for any residential or commercial flooring project. Expertly manufactured using a superior triple layer construction, a birch ply core is encased between two panels of FSC-certified European Oak. The top layer comes in a choice of two surfaces: a 19mm plank with micro-bevelled edges and a smooth sanded appearance, and a sculpted, rounded-edge board with a textured and highly characterful appearance. The extra large planks are finished with a hardwax oil to help create a more durable and resistant surface. These oils are also micro-porous and water repellent, protecting the wood while further enhancing the beauty of its natural characteristics. Inspiring architects and interior designers for more than 40 years, Havwoods is one of the leading experts in wood flooring design and has graced the surfaces of some of the world’s best restaurants, hotels and private residencies. Havwoods’ superior collection is available in an extensive range of species, finishes and plank dimensions to ensure the perfect fit for any project. havwoods.co.uk

emember that time you looked around your home and, with sudden dismay, thought, ‘I have too many houseplants’? Us neither. Because when it comes down to it, life with a potted plant is undeniably better. And better yet is the ability to grow and replicate new, healthy houseplants without ever having to visit a garden centre again. To share, swap and celebrate the miraculous methods of multiplying all of your favourites at almost no cost at all. And here’s the secret: it’s really, really easy. Plants are designed to multiply. They spread their roots, send off inquisitive shoots and regenerate themselves in all sorts of exciting and unexpected ways without any help. Even for the beginner indoor gardener, a single leaf can hold enough life to be successfully grown into a brand new plant. Perhaps you’ve already filled your home with potted plants and are wondering, what’s next? Or you’ve seen a favourite tropical plant burst into bloom and suddenly outgrow the space you’ve styled for it in your home.

RECYCLING & REDUCING WASTE

“Authenticity, joy and playfulness are hallmarks of the new collection”

Rather than simply prune it back, it is possible to use existing leaf and stem material to duplicate and produce exact clones, genetically at least. This is called asexual or vegetative propagation, and it requires no pollination or germination. In fact, just about every houseplant you’ve ever owned (or dreamed of owning) can be multiplied in this way. There are certain plants that will present miniature clones of themselves as if by magic, such as the seemingly immortal spider plant. There are others that need a little more planning and encouragement, but which are just as amenable to producing new, replica plants. All you need is a few straightforward techniques, the right environment for your new plant family, and just a touch of patience. With the help of this book, you’ll quickly discover how to take cuttings, cultivate runners and offshoots, divide plants at the roots and even grow brand new root systems in the air. You’ll learn pruning methods that produce no waste, organic recipes, and eventually enjoy gifting and swapping newly grown greenery with friends, family and other houseplant hoarders you might meet along the way. You will also discover DIY projects to better nurture and display your plant family, including a homemade propagation chamber and a simple self-watering planter. Ultimately, we hope that we can help you view the plant life you come across on your everyday adventures in a new light: with the potential to become new plants and be transported to new places. Namely, your home.

The issues of mass production and wastefulness are more apparent than ever before – and they play a huge part in our everyday decision-making. Multiplying and swapping homegrown plantlets is so much more rewarding than buying them. Instead of buying plants (with little knowledge of the impact their journey to you has had on the planet), you can create brand new plants with virtually no negative impact at all. Propagation is a wonderful way of reducing waste in other ways, too: rather than disposing of healthy pruned stems, you can easily turn these cuttings into new plants to give as gifts (or, er, simply hoard). Propagation can even help save a favourite ailing plant from the bin; taking a healthy cutting or offset from a plant that has been attacked by mealy bugs, for example, is a chance to resurrect it in a fresh life form. Plastic is a difficult material to avoid, even in the gardening industry. For us, the key is to try to be as resourceful as possible and repurpose materials in inventive ways to reduce the needless purchase of more plastic. We find the packaging that mushrooms and fruit are sold in make brilliant drainage trays; glass or plastic bottles work perfectly for rooting cuttings in water; and jam jars are just the right size to experiment with germinating tropical fruit seeds. We believe that growing your own greenery is an essential way to combat some of the limitations and stresses of city life, giving a sense of true accomplishment. If we take the time and care to minimise our impact, that sense of accomplishment becomes even greater.

BRAND FOCUS

STORIES IN STRUCTURES

L

ittles love building things, but let’s face it: some modern kids are easily bored by generic blocks (however lovely those blocks may appear to adult eyes). We’re therefore glad that we stumbled upon Stories in Structures, a brand focused on producing creative toys with a little more depth and detail – not to mention a handy dual-purpose nature. Stories in Structures’ signature products are 3D puzzles in the form of little wooden buildings. Interlocking pieces cut and crafted from the finest birch veneer (and made more resilient with a coating of natural walnut oil or non-toxic paint) can be combined and recombined in any number of configurations, with the window cut-outs and carefully considered forms integral to each piece, ensuring that they never lose their architectural air. They’re equal part open-ended jigsaw and directional building block, and work brilliantly as a game in themselves or as the backdrop to wider play. Also in the range are wooden puzzles with pieces that double as toy cars, sculptural layered dioramas of ballet dancers and famous cityscapes, and some truly striking limited-edition artworks cut into real wood – the latter intended for the walls of your home rather than your little ones’ toy chest. A real find. storiesinstructures.com

Wall stories Villa Nova has collaborated with three children’s book illustrators for a beautiful new range of fabrics and wallpapers. HOME takes a look

I

nspired by childhood memories of whimsical story books brought to life by captivating illustration, Villa Nova have collaborated with three talented children’s picture book illustrators; Frann Preston-Gannon, Christopher Corr and Yuval Zommer to recreate the joy of children’s books in an enchanting collection of fun fabrics, wallcoverings and accessories bursting with wondrous creatures and scenes from far away places. Dazzled by colour and illustrations that are so detailed they are of constant intrigue; Christopher Corr’s work is about joy, colour and a love of life. He takes a great deal of inspiration from his travels; from India, to North Africa and the US. In fact, his love of cities is reflected within his work, particularly where old meets new. Corr creates astounding imagery of scenes from around the world, and crazy, complex cityscapes. Chris enjoys architecture, all the way from stone huts through to modernist structures. He works in gouaches, painting on handmade paper as though he’s using a pen. Yuval Zommer graduated from London’s Royal College of Art with an MA in Illustration. After working as a creative director at a leading advertising agency, his passion for picture books triumphed; he is now the author and illustrator of several highly acclaimed children’s books. Yuval’s reputable non-fiction titles include: The Big Book of Bugs, The Big Book of Beasts and the eagerly awaited third title in the series,

Words E V E H E R B E R T

The Big Book of the Blue, which was published in May 2018. Yuval’s fictional picture books include: One Hundred Bones, One Hundred Sausages and The Street Beneath My Feet. Frann Preston-Gannon is a London based illustrator and designer. Her first picture book, The Journey Home, was published in October 2012 and was shortlisted for both the Waterstones Children’s Prize and the Cambridgeshire ‘Read it Again’ Book Prize. Frann’s books include: I am the Seed That Grew the Tree, Busy Eyed Day, Dave’s Rock, Dave’s Cave, My World: a Book of First Words, Because of an Acorn, Pepper and Poe, What a Hoot!, Sloth Slept On, Deep Deep Sea, Hot Dog, Cold Dog, Dinosaur Beach, How to Lose a Lemur, Dinosaur Farm and The Journey Home. villanova.co.uk

NEUTRAL TONES ARE ENLIVENED WITH HOUSEPLANTS

Q: You have created a beautiful family home with your husband, Tom. Tell us about it and how you chose it. A: We moved into our house 12 years ago when we were only 21 years old. We’d bought a show house, which was great for us at the time as it meant we could just put our clothes in the wardrobe and pop the kettle on. It was hassle-free and looked stunning. But as time went on we realised it wasn’t really very “us”. It didn’t show off our personalities or interests. It wasn’t particularly practical either in terms of storage. About two years ago we decided to make some upgrades and I’m so glad we did. The house is now a collection of the things we love. It’s also colourful, warm, inviting, cosy, inspiring and calming, depending on where we are in the house. Q: When you did re-decorate, where did you start and what was your inspiration? A: A We kept the house exactly as it was for the first few years. Then we eventually painted the guest room as we were turning that into Tom’s music room and then painted the cinema room to give it a little more depth. We really just painted the walls and we moved furniture around. It wasn’t particularly creative of us.

78

The glass went. Any sharp corners were frowned upon. Stairgates went in. Locks were fitted on locks. But since we’ve really redecorated we’ve been able to have more fun with the space. Growing up I can remember being told off about doing anything that might damage the carpet, sofas or breakables. The boys still have to be careful, of course, but I’d say our style has become more family-friendly. I want our home to feel like people live there. Q: How would you describe your interior style? What’s most important to you when decorating a room? A: I like a room to reflect some personality while being inviting and cosy. I also want it to be practical. I’m not one for useless faff.

Q: Did your home design change when you became parents? A: Having children forced us to look at our home differently. Firstly, we realised that children take over. There’s not a single room that doesn’t contain some sort of child-related item. Before we became parents, we did a first aid course that led us to do an extensive “risk assessment” in the house, which completely freaked us out and made us view everything as a potential threat.

Q: Baby number three will be arriving soon – what was the inspiration behind the new nursery? A: I really wanted to freshen up the space as it’s not been redesigned since it became Buzz’s room four years ago and looked tired and worn. I wanted a fresh, clean space that felt homely and calming. It was also important for it to be gender-neutral as we aren’t finding out the sex of the baby – although even when he or she is born we won’t be adding loads of pink or blue. Q: What are your favourite items in the nursery? Why do you love them? A: The jungle-themed wallpaper is stunning and adds so much to the space, while also being neutral and calming. I really love a statement design. We have flamingos in the downstairs loo, an intricate storybased design in the boys’ room and then full-on “flower power” in my office! The tipi tent is gorgeous too – such a unique but

GUEST BEDROOM

“I really love a statement design. we have flamingos in the downstairs loo” to ensure a good night’s sleep. I opted for a comfy upholstered bed and Wayfair’s bestselling thermo-regulated memory foam Nora mattress. My sister and her husband have already been over to test it out and loved it. Hurrah!

THE NURSERY IS FULL OF WHIMSICAL TOUCHES

affordable touch and I can really imagine the baby lying in there and taking it all in. There are also so many textures to explore with the cushions, throws and rugs, and the muted pastel shades help make it all look so beautiful. I’m also really happy with the wardrobe and changing unit. Babies come with lots of stuff – and being the third child, this baby is inheriting a fair few clothes, so it’s good to have somewhere to put it all. I love the design of both these items as they feel really unique. Q: Walk us through your guest bedroom. What do you love most about the style of the space?

A: The guest room is an important one to us as we do tend to have people to stay quite a lot. I wanted somewhere cool, interesting, comfortable, relaxing and adult – somewhere for them to escape from the rest of the house. Even though the room is full of neutral tones, the pops of inky blues, soft blush and gleaming golds really help to make it inviting and interesting. I love the use of texture with the tassel throw cushions and woven wall hangings. The bedside lamps are stunning too. They throw the light in such a magical way in the evening. I also love it when guests sleep really well here, so I wanted to do everything I could

Q: Tell us who will likely be staying in the guest bedroom and making the most of it? A: My sister Giorgina and her husband Chickpea come over quite a bit. They have a little girl so we like getting all the cousins together as much as possible. When the children are asleep we get to just hang out and catch up. Giorgina loves interiors and I’m always envious of her amazing eye, so I’m thrilled she has fallen in love with her new room. Q: What’s next for your home? Any big renovation plans or rooms you would love to tackle next? A: I think I’d like to redesign the cinema room and the bathrooms next and I’d also really like to finish off our bedroom. We painted and furnished it about a year ago, but working with Wayfair.co.uk has really shown me how vital all the statement pieces and finishing touches are and not to be scared to use different textures, colours and to layer things up.

arble Hill Fireplaces was established as a family business in 1974. They have grown exponentially over the years but still offer the same personalised service from initial enquiry to installation and also offer a professional design service. Marble Hill employ their own fitters and therefore have full control over the installations from start to finish and work closely with architects, designers , site foreman and private clients to ensure the fitting runs smoothly and on schedule. Their showrooms in south west London are well worth a visit as they have seven different show areas over four floors showing a wide range of their fireplaces, many of which are under fire. Their stone mantels are made in England from the best quality material, as are their marble mantels, and as such they are able to offer bespoke sizes and variations on many of their standard designs. They have their own restoration department and undertake large restoration projects throughout London working closely with people such as English Heritage, Grosvenor Estates and large multinational developers and builders ensuring the work undertaken is of the highest standard and appropriate to the age and status of the building. Marble Hill have seen trends come and go over the years but have remained focused on offering the very best quality at competitive prices and the latest designs to stay at the forefront of the fireplace industry and its ever changing technology

They are the main London agents for Bellfires balanced flue fire which do not need a conventional chimney and can, more often than not, be positioned wherever required to create a stunning focal point. These fires have an incredible flame pattern which is emphasised by the addition of their reflective back and sides. They are super efficient and offer extraordinary heat output, making them not just stunning to look at but also very green. Marble Hill also offer a good range of solid fuel burners and stoves, and a chimney lining service They are also agents for Planika fires who offer a range of Bio Ethanol line fires (which require no chimney at all). Planika also offer bespoke fires to your own design. Their enhanced designs create an exceptional atmosphere influencing our everyday life. If you are looking for exceptional service and quality products at competitive prices then make Marble Hill Fireplaces your first and last port of call.

Round, square or rectangular; gilt-framed or hung from a leather strap; miniature or huge – mirrors are key in almost every space. Cleverly placed to reflect the room's highlights or to increase the sense of space, the Pulitzer's mirrors combine elegance with character.

Designer Jacu Strauss’s beautful interiors for Amsterdam’s Pulitzer Hotel are a great source of inspiration. Here are seven easy ways to make your home more like the Pulitzer 88

MIRRORS

YELLOW Although yellow isn't the single defining colour anywhere, throughout the hotel are little yellow details that work to create a colourful impression. A throw, a curtain, a cushion, an artwork – even the hotel's stylish souvenir notebooks are bound in bright yellow. A yellow accent is an instant contemporary update.

OLD VS NEW

Mixing old and new is done with great style here, especially in the Art Collector's suite, where contemporary art sits alongside classic works. Dutch Old Masters hang everywhere, and the Jansz restaurant has a collection of quirky phrenology heads alongside its contemporary lighting and furniture.

BOOKS There's an entrire suite dedicated to books at the Pulitzer, and they are creatively displayed in many ways. Small piles of old hardbacks on small shelves, art books displayed full frontal on picture ledges, books reflected in mirrors and this curved construction that's a feat of engineering in itself.

GREY AND PINK Without adhering to a strict colour scheme, the Pulitzer has a definite palette, and it features the grey and pink combination in various contexts. A pink armchair set against grey tongue and groove panels, pink curtains on grey walls, pink cushions on a sober sofa – all of these add visual interest.

PANELLING Painted panels in this blue dining area create a cosy, secluded feel, while pale grey tongue and groove in the bedrooms adds texture and warmth. Wood panelling connects the original canal house interiors with their new identity.

DELFT TILES The vintage Delft tiles that cover the check-in desks feature small figures busy doing things: harvesting, hammering, fishing, all in the traditional blue and white. These are characterful and quirky, a hommage to the hotel's Dutch history.

PATTERN Contrasting geometric patterned fabrics on these cushions in the bar are graphic and contemporary as well as warm and cosy. The space is inviting and luxurious.

ella Concept’s new design for bar-restaurant Piraña in Balham represents something of a new direction for the Gayle Noonan and Tatjana von Stein’s innovative design studio. With a bolder colour palette and a playfully retro style, the project fuses a range of distinct moods and atmospheres into a relatively small space. From the shell of a former restaurant, Sella Concept has conjured a fluid, immersive space, seamlessly subdivided into different areas, each with a subtly different mood. The owners were keen for the atmosphere to be casual and easygoing, with no sense of division between diners and drinkers, and this comes across in a layout governed by a feeling of flow rather than division. As is typical with Sella Concept projects, the design concept began by developing an understanding of how people will use the overall space, incorporating visual shifts and atmospheric transitions to accommodate changing behaviours within the venue. Light and welcoming, Piraña’s front room houses a chef’s table, a curved bar, a banquette-lined platform and a ‘secret’ snug with a private bar hatch. The back room is darker and more indulgent in tone, lined with cosy and intimate private booths, from which customers can call the bar directly. These distinct but connected zones allow Piraña customers

For a studio known for its love of warm pastel pinks, the Pirana interior represents quite a departure

to use the space as their mood and preference dictates – whether they fancy sociable casual dining and drinking or a more private personal experience. Designed to catch the eye with its bold colour combinations, the exterior has been styled with mosaics of blue and white tile and striking window façades dominated by a red metal framework. Inside, Piraña’s playful, trend-agnostic aesthetic is created through the use of a rich, sensory palette of colours and materials, including a bespoke floor in jade terrazzo (created in partnership with a fabricator in Spain), micro mosaic tiling at the bar, and a deep, earthy red in the upholstery and the curved timber slats that ties the space together. For Sella Concept, a studio known for its love of warm pastel pinks, the Piraña interior represents quite a departure. Apart from the chairs and lights, every fixture and item of furniture has been custom-designed for the space by Sella Concept – including the booths, bar, banquette, tables, stools, floors and bathroom sinks – and, unusually, the studio worked directly with the building contractor on the renovation, without involving a third-party architect. Taking advantage of Gayle Noonan’s background in graphic design, Sella Concept has also created Piraña’s visual identity, deployed on menus, business cards and online – ensuring that the character and style of the restaurant carries smoothly onto all brand collateral. sella-concept.com

HOME celebrates Hampshire’s newly opened and super stylish Heckfield Place Hotel 96

H

eckfield Place is a beautiful Georgian family home lovingly restored to its historic origins. The house, the gardens, and Home Farm have been knitted back together into a 400acre estate nestled in a secluded corner of Hampshire. Resolutely natural, elegantly evolving, this is a living place centred on sustainability and onward thinking. A country haven with a progressive vision, firmly looking towards the future to shape the next chapter in Heckfield’s remarkable story and redefine the idea of a modern luxury hotel. It has been made by many. Dating to the 1760s, a cast of influential characters has left their mark on the property; from its first owners, the Shaw-Lefevres and Walpoles, and their celebrated horticulturist William Wildsmith, who planted the arboretum, to the custodians of today. Slowly formed in the minds, hands and crafts of extraordinary people, Heckfield Place has been expertly brought forward into one narrative by the Chan family. The Home Farm practices biodynamic principles, and the kitchen gardens and orchards will feed vegetables, fruits, honey and flowers for the rooms and restaurants: the light-filled Marle with its terrace overlooking the grounds, and Hearth’s ever-changing set menu cooked over open fire.

The house’s rooms are positioned to follow the sun’s trajectorys

“Here it begins with the soil,” says culinary director Skye Gyngell says. “Heckfield feels like you’re being hugged — a feeling that’s in your plate of food.” Every part of Heckfield Place underscores the rhythms of nature. Designer Ben Thompson honours the house’s roots while introducing updates that lend an inviting, organic and elegantly contemporary feel. Salvaged stone and distressed walnut floors throughout anchor an idiosyncratic mix of worn Persian carpets, antique furnishings, natural linen and wool upholstery. Rush mats harvested from the River Ouse and modern pieces sit alongside the owner’s family collection of British paintings. The house’s rooms are positioned to follow the sun’s trajectory. During the day, house guests will progress from the bright morning room for coffee and newspapers to the afternoon sun-dappled drawing room and will end the day in the moody and intimate Moon Bar for a nightcap. Offering different aspects across the surrounding grounds, the charac-

ter of each bedroom is written in the natural materials and meticulous craftsmanship found throughout. Pictured left is the Long Room, Heckfield’s finest space, a private apartment with vaulted ceilings, sitting and dining room, private terrace and balcony with breathtaking views of the lakes, gardens and surrounding countryside. A committed group of farmers, arborists, gardeners, florists and conservation experts share a dedication to the continuous evolution of the grounds, creating a natural environment for guests to be inspired by and engage in. Guests can immerse themselves in the abundant natural surroundings, walking in ancient heathers and woodlands, wild swimming in the lakes, visiting the farm and greenhouses or picking the freshest ingredients from the gardens to eat in the restaurants. A natural home to unearth, reconnect and rediscover through its curated programme, The Assembly at Heckfield Place. heckfieldplace.com

I love his futuristic but simple lighting designs. They’re such a statement piece, I would love to own one but they’re a bit out of my current budget. My favourite is the gold melt ball design. I also think his recent sofa collaboration with IKEA is brilliant – the Delaktig, a bed that can be turned into a sofa with various add-ons; it’s so clever.

WHAT INSPIRED LALA LOVES DECOR? I started Lala Loves Decor in 2016 when my twin girls started pre-school. I needed a creative outlet and hoped I could make some money too. Ideally I wanted to create a flexible career, and with hard work and determination I was able to do that. It took off solely through Instagram – I’ll always be grateful to that little app.

YOUR WORK’S BIGGEST INSPIRATION Vintage pieces. I really love mixing vintage with new in my own home. Most of my products are inspired by the natural world – clouds, planets, rainbows, flowers – but when coming up with the design I like to go back to old trends and see how I can revive them in a different way. For example, my flower mirror is inspired by vintage rattan, but adding a gold centre makes it more contemporary.
