ST C L E M E N TS CA F É PA R SO N S G R E E N hoever says the crepes in Paris are the best in the world clearly hasn’t tried St Clements’. The Parsons Green cafe’s version, in their fabulously thin, crispy buckwheat form, are some of the best we’ve ever had. Accompanying these delicate morsels of Comté cheese-laced deliciousness are well-seasoned Portobello mushrooms and a rich-but-not-heavy filling of creamy scrambled eggs. Cooked to that everelusive state of self-saucing, they are simply dreamy. For those wanting an equally filling but not fattening breakfast, St Clements’ fritters are the solution, especially with their herby leek, minty pea flavour, crunchy outside and creamy crumbled W

feta cheese interior. Steaming bowls of honey-drizzled porridge occupy several reclaimed wood table tops beside us. Food envy succumbed to, moments later the Goldilocks-approved dish is entertaining our palates with a textural dance between grated Granny Smith apple, dried coconut shavings and oats cooked just right. Any space left for treats is best reserved for the array of freshly baked cakes, slices and viennoiserie on the counter’s chopping boards. A torturous decision for the weekend, we took one for the team. After sampling the moist, oh-so-chocolatey chocolate brownie and pistachio cake (accompanied by creme fraîche and warm rhubarb compote) it was increasingly apparent that there’s no choosing incorrectly here. 201 New Kings Road, SW6 stclementscafe.co.uk

T H E CO O K B O O K CA F É PA R K L A N E his may be part of the Intercontinental but most brunchers here are not hotel guests – though neither are they locals who have just rolled out of bed. This is somewhere that people travel to for a weekend buffet that is a real feast, one with unlimited Prosecco and Bellinis. It’s a slightly overdressed crowd that hovers around the serving areas, to which it is entirely acceptable to keep returning. We start at the cold market table, where I fill my plate with an eccentric but nevertheless enjoyable mix of salmon and tuna sashimi, watermelon and feta salad, Caesar salad, smoked fish and various cheeses – there is also a selection of salads, cured meats, lots of couscous, tiger prawns and a variety of dips. For those veering more towards the breakfast than the lunch, there is a hot counter where eggs are cooked to order and pancakes and waffles come with myriad toppings and sprinkles – this is where the children congregate, aiming to score bowlfuls of chocolate shavings and mini marshmallows – but this isn’t all, because there are main courses to come. The menu lists three options and despite having it explained to us that we don’t need to choose, we’re still not quite expecting all of them to arrive as sharing plates. There’s a very good salmon, Jerusalem artichoke and salmon plate, a steak, an asparagus and kale one and a dahl, cauliflower and coconut rice dish, all of them high class. Puddings are dinky and arguably look better than they taste, but after all that, who cares? T

oiled wood and 1950s tubular furniture, while the roof doubles up in summer as a terrace. We are here on a less than beautiful day, however, so it’s inside for us, where the Peyton and Byrne restaurant is separated from the less formal café down the middle. There are separate breakfast and lunch menus – breakfast fairly extensive, with a long pancake list and a lot of things on toast, while lunch is compact and unassuming. We try a carrot and beetroot salad with goats cheese and hazelnuts, which is fresh and tasty; and a monkfish and shrimp burger. And since it’s a Sunday there’s a selection of roasts – chicken or beef on our visit – and my roast chicken is a huge plate piled high with a vast Yorkshire pudding. H A L LY ’ S PA R SO N S G R E E N ou probably shouldn’t judge a brunch by its queue, but a small group of people waiting to be seated must be the sign of somewhere good. As a Californian-inspired café-cumY

restaurant this eatery is all about beach- chic. With whitewashed brick walls and sanded furniture, it’s a relaxing little getaway. After a brilliantly sweet and smooth matcha latte, I enjoy something salty: crispy friend chorizo, scrambled eggs and avocado on sourdough. Caramelised and delicious, the spicy sausage works well alongside the slightly underdone and gooey eggs. Meanwhile my brunching companion goes for the veggie English breakfast with meatless sausages, eggs, roasted cherry tomatoes, buttery mushrooms and homemade baked beans. Made using cannellini and kidney beans instead of Heinz, these are a great healthy alternative to the sugar-laden tin. Then a massive slice of lemon, olive oil and almond cake. B I ST R Ó BY S H OT PA R SO N S G R E E N ichelin-starred head chef Fabrice Meier (Trinity, The Wild Game Company, One-O-One Knightsbridge) heads up the sister branch to Shot Espresso, using East London’s experimental cuisine as inspiration for his French-Italian fusion restaurant. And unsurprisingly, his dishes are exactly as his nickname suggests: Fab. For brunch all of the classics are on the cards: Eggs Royale, Florentine and Benedict – each featuring organic Italian eggs and their signature bright yellow yolks; poached eggs and toast with optional smoked salmon, bacon, and olive oil-drizzled avocado; and a generous portion of yoghurt with granola and homemade raspberry jam. Utterly divine. But perhaps the biggest hero is the French toast. Topping our list of Tastiest French Toasts Ever, the springy white bread (made on premises like the butter and buttermilk) is hugged by just the right amount of maple syrup. Bistró by Shot in short? John Doe EATING GAME ON GOLBORNE ROAD'S STYLISH NEWCOMER Words ELIZABETH HUTTON

pened last October, John Doe is named, quite morbidly, after the American legal term for an uniden ified male body. And there's a fi ing anon mi about the place too as it feels like the sort of spot that only the locals know about, an in-the-know secret. Visiting on a Saturday, the atmosphere at John Doe is, rather ironically, alive. The kitchen’s long marble-topped wooden bar is full of hungry punters looking on eagerly as their orders are cooked by Bertha, the

restaurant’s much-loved charcoal and wood burner. Adding the wow factor, a number of charismatic chefs glide around the kitchen showcasing their ski s using fire and smoke. With a menu that revolves around British game, predominantly venison – ano her reason h he name doe fi s the bill – the restaurant also prides itself on an array of seasonal seafood and vegetable-based dishes. What’s more, the selection of British craft beer available is truly exceptional. After debating between a couple, we choose a bottle of Cool as a Cucumber by the Wild Beer Co, and order grilled

is predominately VENISON Cornish octopus with chickpeas and aioli. The clever combination of garlic and nutty chickpea works to complement the smokey depth of the octopus without overpowering the de ica e a our. ua e ba anced is ash-roasted leek with caper, lentil and tarragon dressing, which relies on salty capers to counteract the sweet and soft slow cooked leeks. Both dishes are impressively good. For my main, I order venison haunch steak accompanied by bone marrow, watercress and capers. Smothering the buttery marrow on top of the steak, I realise that while this was the carnivore’s dream, it is a little too indulgent for me. But then marrow really isn’t for everyone. Meanwhile, my companion’s lemon brined creedy caver chicken is cooked to perfection, succulent and delicious. Sides are purple sprouting broccoli coated in

anchovies, chilli and garlic as well as some o he crispies u fies duck a roas ies we’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. hi e m par ner chooses o finish things up with the British cheese platter, quince and biscuits, I go for a great big slab of valrhona chocolate terrine with sweet pistachio cream. Seriously decedent, this is a rich end to an epic meal. All washed down with a spirited apple and Pomana brandy cocktail, John Doe kills us kindly. Every restaurant in Rome claims to serve the best Italian food so do your research before heading out. We found real Roman fare at the authentic neighbourhood trattoria, Osteria dell’Angelo. Full of Italians drinking local wine and eating homemade pasta it’s worth booking a table in advance. For Roman cuisine without the foreplaning, we recommend a food safari with Eating Italy (eatingitalyfoodtours. com). Taking you through the foodie neighbourhood of Testaccio, this guided tour lets you escape the crowds and experience the city like a local – on foot. ienna can now add shopping destination to its already impressive offering of baroque and gothic architecture, outrageous charity balls and famous hotels, making it the ideal city break this summer. S E E . Vienna is a historically and culturally rich city and, with the exception of the Belvedere Gallery (permanent home to the works of Gustav Klimt) and the Central Cemetery (even more permanent home to Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert), most of this history can be found in the First District. Enlist a tour guide to take you on a walking tour and you will notice the wide streets, completely devoid of litter and the air, free from smog, courtesy of a healthy breeze blowing off the Danube. They will undoubtedly lead you past the impressive, crescent-shaped Hofburg Imperial Palace, former home of the Habsburgs and stop off at the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an epic Gothic edifice with a stunning tiled roof that bears the double-headed eagle that is symbolic of the empire ruled from Vienna. If walking seems like too much effort, hail a fiaker the iennese horse and carts that throng the First District) for a leisurely excursion around the city centre. If shopping is the main priority, the newly built Golden Quarter, located off Am Hof Square is a must-visit. Signa Group’s latest project manages to pay tribute to the UNESCO World Heritage Site it inhabits with tasteful and uniform signage and top-end brands, from Valentino to Vivienne Westwood, not to mention remarkable luxury apartments and office spaces with breathtaking views.

STAY. The Park Hyatt Vienna is hard to beat in the hotel stakes. Located in the picturesque Am Hof Square, the Park Hyatt opened in June 2014 and has quickly established itself as one of the city’s places to be seen. What with 143 luxurious rooms (including 35 suites), the fully kitted out Arany Spa housing the largest indoor swimming pool in Vienna and The Bank, the hotel’s exceptional restaurant, even walking out of the front door is a wrench. The decor is in tune with the historic roots of the building, formerly a bank, with seams of mother of pearl running through it and luxurious natural materials such as onyx from Iran and marble from Italy dominating the rooms and common areas. Those looking to enjoy a drink of an evening can keep it traditional in the hotel’s Lounge where cigar smoking and whisky drinking is par for the course or head down to Pearl, the more contemporary bar that spills out onto the street. Vienna is known for the lavish balls that make up its social season and although the Life Ball does not fit into the traditional category (you won’t need to learn to waltz to have a good time) it has become a fixture in the city since the first event was organised by Gary Kessler with the

It is now the largest charity ball in Europe and raises hundreds of thousands of pounds to fight I and I S every year. The theme for 2015 was ‘Gold’ and in standard flamboyant fashion, the red carpet was awash with gold-bedecked revellers, some wearing little more than body paint and others kitted out in golden bondage gear and chains. The pening eremony featured fire and tributes being brought up to the stage, which were received by dancers dressed as Klimt paintings. Bizarre and wonderful celebrity appearances included Charlize Theron, Sean Penn and Dita von Teese with musical performances from Mary J Blige, Sophie Ellis Bextor and, of course, Conchita Wurst.
