his month we’re championing positive representation, because despite the best efforts of women (and many men) everywhere, pregnancy and motherhood remain a source of confusion, anxiety, self-doubt and taboos. It’s an area in which photographer Grace Elizabeth excels. Grace’s photographs of real mothers and children literally highlight the physical impacts of pregnancy and birth, embellishing scars and stretchmarks in gold paint. In doing so, they force us to deepen our definition of beauty, and remind us what a wondrous, generous act it is to nurture another being within your body. Elsewhere in the issue, columnist Alexandra Hunter opens up about miscarriage – it’s estimated that 1 in 8 pregnancies will end in one, yet it’s often regarded as “too painful to talk about”. In fact, miscarriage can be too painful not to talk about. But the tide is beginning to turn, and women are opening up to each other more and more. Thought-provoking stuff, but we’ve lots of lighter fare, too, including summer fashions for mamas and littles. If it’s practical, stylish and fit for family life, you’ll find it here. Now go on and enjoy the final days of summer – we’ll see you next month.

ONGOING Cambridge Theatre Eight million people have now seen the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda. ALICE IN KEW
21 JULY - 27 AUGUST Kew Gardens Become part of the action as you bump into the constantly late White Rabbit, watch the Queen of Hearts and her beautifully choreographed troop of cards and sing along to catchy tunes as Alice learns to find her way around the Wonderland that is Kew Gardens. This is set to be a magnificent piece of outdoor theatre. theatreonkew.co.uk
amp Wilderness, at six locations across the UK, is a summer camp that’s dedicated to wholesome outdoor fun. Children aged between six and 15 can enjoy three- or five-day residential camps, staying in bell tents in ancient forests and spending their days learning bushcraft skills, wild swimming, cooking over open fires and enjoying the freedom of the outdoors. Wilderness offers an antidote to a screen-dominated childhood: think den-building and archery rather than Fortnite and Instagram. Evenings are spent storytelling and toasting marshmallows on a campfire – and children return full of new-found confidence and independence. City kids especially are certain to benefit from a hefty dose of outdoor adventures – and everyone will make friends and life-long memories.

DISCRIMINATION IN THE WORKPLACE IS A HUGE PROBLEM PREVENTING WOMEN FROM RETURNING TO REWARDING WORK”
~
INSTA MAMA Nikki Cochrane and Kathryn Taylor on empowering mums to kickstart a career in digital @digitalmums • digitalmums.com
Q Tell us about Digital Mums – why did you start it and what experience did each of you bring to the company? A Kathryn and I launched Digital Mums in 2014 to empower women to find #WorkThatWorks by upskilling them with in-demand social media and digital skills so they can find flexible roles that sync with family life. We were running our own social media agency at the time and realised that we couldn’t possibly support all the small businesses ourselves. We also knew that maternal discrimination in the workplace was a huge problem preventing women from returning to rewarding work that worked around their children. We recognised that mums could plug this gap if we empowered them with the right digital skills. This is what we do via our Social Media education programmes where we’ve now trained over 1,400 women online, with eight in 10 finding flexible work thanks to us within 12 months of graduating. Kathryn has worked with some of the most innovative schools around the world, including the Innovation Unit, where she spent four years as Head of Communications and then Head of Digital. It’s here that she took inspiration for our REAL™ learning model of teaching, which is learning by doing IRL whether it’s working with a real life business on our Associate Programme or running a real life social media campaign on our Social Media Management Course. And it gets you job-ready like no other style of training can!

“57% OF THE UK’S 5M BUSINESSES USING SOCIAL MEDIA FOR THEIR MARKETING”
~
Q Why is social media knowledge such an empowering tool in today’s working climate? A With 57% of the UK’s 5m businesses using social media for their marketing and the amount they spend on it growing, social media is integral to today’s working world. It’s still a relatively new industry too, meaning there’s plenty of opportunity to make your own mark in it. One of the great things about social media is that it’s hugely versatile, meaning (with the right training!) you don’t have to have a certain career background to find success. It’s a fun and fulfilling career that lets you be creative with content and copy, analytical with strategy and statistics or sociable with influencers and industry experts. And you definitely don’t need to be in an office – a number of our graduates have never even met their clients IRL! Q What’s the key to building a successful and sustainable freelance career? A A big part of what we do is empowering women to forge their own careers, become lifelong learners and find the confidence to go out there and get the roles – and pay – they deserve. We call this “do the hustle” and have built in a free four-week course and a bank of resources at the end of our training to help graduates do just that. Another huge key to success is community. We’re ALL about women helping women and, from the start, set up Digital Mums to be a supportive community to combat the isolation women can sometimes feel both as a mum but also a freelancer. This starts during training, with students teamed up with a peer group of fellow students to learn from and learn with and carries on after graduating in the form of our #DMCollective. We all need people to bounce off – so it’s just finding that virtual team!
Q How do we address some of the benefits lost from a more traditional working environment? A Technology! This is one of my biggest frustrations when it comes to the current lack of flexible working available in the UK. The world of work has changed unrecognisably because of technological innovation, yet still working 9-5 in an office is seen as the “norm”. Recent research we conducted showed seven in 10 people want flexible work but only 12% have asked for it. Technology has positively disrupted the way we communicate (Slack, Google Hangouts, Zoom), the way we collaborate (Google Docs) and the way we organise our time (Trello), and there’s no better time to be working flexibly. We just need businesses to ingrain it in their company culture and for people to recognise that flex makes business sense – it’s not an employee perk. Culture is one key factor that can easily be lost in a less traditional working environment. But it’s about embedding this into a company culture or your way of working from the start. So if you’re a freelancer, mix up where you work from so you’re not always sat at home alone. Schedule monthly meetings with clients IRL or go to events that benefit your job but make you feel connected to other people in your field – you might even hustle some work out of it!

Try to keep to that, even on your weekends – or days off, if you are going back part time – to help with structure. Sync your diary with work’s and your partner’s, noting any special days and events. Buy a huge wall calendar and hang it up, so you don’t forget key dates. Routine is important for you, as much as your child, so try to stick to going to bed at the same time every night to help prepare for being back at work. Whatever you do, know that things will feel a little surreal at first.

work and kids, and not being as readily available as you were on maternity leave. Psychologist Dr Karen Pine, co-founder of Do Something Different Ltd (dsd.me), lends her advice on dealing with this: “I honestly believe there’s too much emphasis on the effects – positive and negative – of parental behaviour on children. Mothers worry that anything they say or do will impact upon their child, hence they’re always worrying about getting it wrong and doing some lasting ‘damage’. I would say to mothers: let yourself off the hook a bit, stop beating yourself up. Of course, if you neglect or abuse your child it could do lasting damage, but mostly, if you love and care for them, they will be OK! Every minor decision does not have to be fraught with worry or potentially guilt-inducing. There’s some strong research showing that how children turn out as adults is influenced by their peer group more than their parents. And recent research has also shown that to a certain extent, children’s personality characteristics are ‘contagious’ i.e. they get them from their friends. It’s time we told parents they can chill a little and mums can stop feeling guilty. If your child’s a horror, it may be nothing to do with you!”

ne thing I’m personally not great at is saying “no” – the people-pleaser in me dies a little every time I do, but I’ve learnt the hard way (hi there, exhaustion) that no’s are necessary if you want to keep your sanity. So that’s my advice. Simplify your life and don’t overstretch yourself. Life is about to change.

That’s normal. Soon enough, though, you’ll get back into the flow of being at work and on projects that stimulate you. You’ll feel excited and challenged, and you might well feel like I do – that being at work is the easy bit. It’s the days off or the weekends, when little people are screaming, that are the hardest!

gold, the idea being that the ceramic item, once broken and now fi xed, becomes more beautiful than before. I loved this idea but refused to apply the “broken” aspect to my project because, after all, post-partum women aren’t “broken”. So the Gold Dust Project draws upon the beauty of gold and the beauty [of the subjects] in their wonderful scars and stretchmarks.

WORK Photographer Grace Elizabeth on her arresting “Gold Dust Project”
Q How did you get into photography? A I remember my dad giving me his old DSLR camera to use on a dog walk. I loved photographing my dogs because they were important to me, and I could document those memories. Fast forward a few years and I studied art in school, then went on to study photography at A-Level. I shot my first wedding at age 16, for a friend, and loved the buzz. So after finishing my A-Levels I studied Creative and Editorial Photography. I loved the editorial aspect, the idea of investigating projects and concepts photographically. I think that’s probably what Gold Dust Project was influenced by. During the last two years of my degree, I lost my two dogs within six months of one another. At that moment, photographs became more than fun, they became powerful. They served as reminders of the fragility of life. I wanted to use photography for good intentions. Q Tell us about the Gold Dust Project. We adore your photos! A I had wanted to do a motherhood project for ages and while I was sat one morning thinking, “What can I do to help empower these women?” I remembered the Japanese art of Kintsugi. Kintsugi focuses on fi xing and putting back together broken ceramics with
Q How did you approach the project from a visual standpoint? A Having listened to the concerns of many mothers, I wanted to focus on the changes they experience during and after pregnancy by focusing on two dominant aspects: stretchmarks and scarring – the latter mostly from c-sections. I wanted to focus on drawing clear, in-your-face focus to them. This project was not going to be shy or polished or perfect; it was going to be real and raw. I photographed each mother in their own home, with or without their children, and as deadpan as possible. Some images are close-up, some are portraits. All of the women together create a beautiful patchwork image of what it means to be a post-partum mother. I wanted anyone who viewed the project to be able to relate in some way, or to change their perspective in some way about what a body looks like. All too often we’re indoctrinated into believing that we should all look like glossy magazine models, but the reality is most of us don’t, and even those who do still struggle with their body image. Q Why do you think body positivity is so important for mums? A In a day and age when social media influences our perceptions of what is “beautiful”, I think it can be hard to believe that we are all beautiful, no matter how we look or what scars and marks we have. I think that mothers can be one of the hardest hit when it comes to accepting how they look and feel about themselves, and many of those I’ve met have told me that they also feel guilt about disliking their bodies. The project has been great as it has enabled them to see that there is something gratifying about their scars and marks. At the end of the day, their bodies have achieved something miraculous: bringing a baby into the world. I hope the project can challenge the view of what the post-partum female body looks like. There’s no definite outcome and we’re all different. photographybygrace.co.uk @graceelizphoto August 201 8

rt always came naturally to me. I have two siblings that are several years older, so I typically couldn’t keep up with them but when it came to drawing I could actually hold my own! My mom picked up on my interest and enrolled me in some classes that I really enjoyed. Eventually she found a local artist who taught group classes for kids in her home studio. I went to her class every week from fourth grade until I graduated high school. Her name is Pam Ford and she basically taught me how to draw! It wasn’t until I applied to colleges that I realised the specific field that I should go into was illustration. I just knew I liked to draw things that had a story or a purpose. All The Things I Wish For You was the second book I illustrated so I had figured out some parts of the process but I was still learning a lot too. When the Papier team approached me, I let them know that I was expecting a kid right around the time they were hoping to have the project completed but they were nice enough to work around that, so we charged ahead! I drew several children to show the general style
(especially since I typically draw animals, not kids) and then we went back and forth making adjustments to their age, outfits, etc. We wanted each spread to be a beautiful piece of art, so I made sure to include a lot of fun details, leave room for personalisation and create a colourful world for the reader to be a part of. When sketching, I only worked with one character but as I moved into final art I had to consider all the different variations. It was an interesting challenge drawing all the characters in each scene. When I was doing initial development of the children in the book, I drew one boy with brown hair on a rock about to catch a frog and that was how I pictured my son would look as a little kid. (But he surprised us!) The boy that I did all my sketches with was actually based on my friend’s son, Oliver. He is one
of the cutest kids I’ve ever seen and he’s always doing something fun and adventurous with his family. The book was mostly done when I gave birth to my son, Quinn. I still had some minor updates to make and I had to add the variation of characters after he arrived. Being pregnant with Quinn while working on the book both gave me a sense of urgency to wrap things up and gave me a little extra motivation to make every page great. I always want to make exceptional art that I’m proud of but I also wanted to make something that I would be excited to share with him, so there was a bit more pressure to get it right. Quinn really responds to the colourful pages. He gets most excited for the magician and space spreads but I feel most connected to the mountain spread. My husband and I love travelling and exploring the world so I’m excited to share those experiences with him. Being a mum is an amazing and unique experience but it’s also a really tough job! I feel like I should tell every mum I see that she’s doing great and to keep it up because it can be pretty exhausting and there’s a lot of pressure to only share the wonderful parts of being a mum. Every day is a unique challenge but it’s worth it in the end! I hope my mum knows how much I appreciate all that she’s done for me… and all she continues to do for me! mamah ood COLUMN
Telling it like it is…
Miscarriage Alexandra Hunter on breaking the silence and coming to terms with a unique grief
I
wasn’t sure if miscarriage was a subject that would be appropriate for an Absolutely Mama column. We’re all about celebrating pregnancy and parenting, and providing positive support on that difficult journey. But then three of my wonderful friends contacted me having suffered miscarriages last month and I knew this was something that we ought to talk about more, because the aftershock can be excessively painful and the grief is unique. Miscarriage affects one in three pregnancies, and still no one knows why. It helps to talk – or at least, it helped me – and I know from friends who have spoken to me because of my past experiences, that sharing has helped them; knowing that someone understands this rarely talked-about pain. It never occurred to me I would have a miscarriage, let alone two. I was thrilled to be pregnant. I wore my “baby on board” badge like it was a crown and felt that I was finally heading in the direction that was my life’s purpose. I projected a future, imagined myself as a mum, imagined my baby – all the while knowing that my life would soon change in unimaginable (not to mention irrevocable)
ways. I was in Devon at three months’ pregnant and went for a walk in the fields. I could smell the grass with such an intensity that day and, although I felt exhausted, I was happy. When I went walking the next day and could no longer smell the grass, I wasn’t concerned; I thought I was over the first trimester and beginning to feel like myself again. The next day I started bleeding and a week later I came out of hospital, shell-shocked and in postoperative pain. And that could have been that – except that it wasn’t. What followed were waves of grief and jealousy. Temporarily, I became someone I didn’t recognise. I was so miserable that people who didn’t know me well started asking me what was wrong. The barista who made my morning coffee noticed after a week that I’d stopped smiling and she asked what was wrong. I told her the truth, because I
~
couldn’t think of what else to say, and she said she’d suffered too. She talked to me of her experiences, as did the site manager of our office and so many others – all because I couldn’t hide my sadness. The stories of others helped me to understand that I wasn’t as alone as I had felt. Others understood the grief of losing a future that was finally within grasp, the hideous jealousy towards all pregnant women and the exclusion from the pregnancy club that had occurred overnight. Try and ignore well-meaning but dismissive comments; those who say “at least it was early” or “at least you know you can get pregnant”. They can’t understand that you feel robbed of a future you desperately wanted and had already projected. I had never been jealous of anyone or anything in my life and suddenly jealousy, even of my closest friends, was consuming me. I fell pregnant for a second time many months later. At my three-month scan they couldn’t find a heartbeat and mine sank. I booked the operation as quickly as I could and for the second time in a year had that hideous procedure. A few weeks later, I started bleeding very heavily. It happened again at a party, but with over a pint of blood, and I knew something was very wrong. I read pregnant for a further three months after the second pregnancy was removed. My breasts still hurt, my body was plump and my hormones raged, but this time, I was seriously ill – and that made the second miscarriage easier to deal with. I had to focus on my long-term health. After a few months of misery, I became pregnant again, and this time it went to term. Every day since, I have reminded myself how lucky I am to have my little boy. I bled in the middle of the third pregnancy, too, but miraculously it turned out okay. Talking to others who have been through miscarriages helped me to cope with swallowing a very difficult cocktail of emotions. Sadly, miscarriage is common – yet that means there are many women out there who understand and can offer you support (and wine) when you’re suffering. But they can only do it if they know – so tell them.

Lightweight cottons. The boys love our soft cotton shirts and my daughter’s favourite is our cheesecloth dress, which is a classic Sunuva shape in glorious colours. Of course, they all wear Sunuva swimwear and rash vests are another essential!
WHY DID YOU START SUNUVA?
With six young kids between us, Emily and I were aware of the damage to young skin caused by the harmful rays of the sun. At the time, the only UV-protective clothing we could find was very functional and pretty ugly. We decided to develop that functionality into a fashion garment and Sunuva has now grown into the lifestyle brand that it is today.
YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE PIECE?
We make a rule of loving everything that goes into the collection but I think our accessories are particularly strong this year, and in particular our Kuku beach bag. It’s the perfect size for all the family’s needs, comes in fabulously bright colours and flat-packs into your suitcase.
FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION WITH KIDS? When the kids were small, we chose allinclusive resorts like the Hillside in Turkey and the Costa Navarino in Greece, with activities to keep the kids occupied while we have a break. Now the kids are older, we love going further afield. This Christmas we’re extremely excited to be taking them to India.

PARENTS Introducing the Mamas & Papas Parent Approved Panel
I
n the spring of this year, Absolutely Mama teamed up with the UK’s number one nursery brand, Mamas & Papas, to help launch their Parent Approved Panel campaign. The aim was to find 10 brilliant, inspiring and authentic mums and dads who would collaborate with Mamas & Papas over a 12-month period, becoming true brand ambassadors. This diverse team would be among the first to receive and review new parenting and baby kit, making recommendations on product development and sharing their experiences with fellow Mamas & Papas fans across the country. Needless to say, the entries flooded in – we received over 500 in total – and in all honesty, it was difficult to narrow the field to just 10. We loved seeing the various experiences of parenting – but make our selection we did (though we cheated a bit by enlarging the panel to 11). Now we’re ready to introduce you to them, the very special individuals who will collectively be the face of Mamas & Papas in the year ahead. Thanks to everyone who took part, and let’s wish our winners well. Don’t forget to check in at mamasandpapas.com/parentapproved-panel for regular updates on what they’ve been up to...

SKIN DEEP Mama quizzes Heidi Gosman, co-founder of Heidi Klein, about bikinis, beaches and fashion
Q What makes a great bikini? A It’s all about fit. Getting that right is 90% of the battle for women purchasing bikinis, and one of the problems that plagues the search for so many is that there are plenty of designers doing truly gorgeous bikinis that only fit very specific, often unrealistic body shapes. We put a huge amount of research and emphasis on making sure that everything we create is beautiful on and off the body. Every single Heidi Klein swimsuit goes through a seven-stage fit cycle, on different body types.

The designer has added some gorgeous pieces to her online shop, available for pre-order. Every piece is designed in England and made with fabric left over from her childrenswear brand, Girls Talk to Boys – championing a sustainable approach to clothes production. £120; kellyekardt.com
Q And what makes a terrible one? A Bad support and wearing the wrong size. Beyond that, it’s down to personal style, and everyone has their own!

Q How do trends affect swimwear? What’s new for Heidi Klein’s SS18? A Trends in swimwear tend to affect shapes and silhouettes most dramatically. More than anything, we change our palettes, developing hand-blended colours and patterns we hand-paint in house. We always have new shapes, but we also do have a lot of timeless classics that we have absolutely perfected over time. Our customers love knowing they can always find their dream shapes in fresh colourways. Q Who is your favourite designer? A I’d have to say Carolina Herrera. She just never gets it wrong, does she?

A FA M I LY A F FA I R Pop star and actor Kimberley Walsh on turning her talents to kids clothing Wo r d s H E L E N BA RO N
K
imberley Walsh’s biography reads like a modern fairytale: plucky Yorkshire lass with dreams of stardom auditions for a TV talent show and doesn’t quite make the cut. But when another contestant is disqualified, she finds herself back in the running – and wins through to the final five. The show, of course, was Popstars: The Rivals, and the final five of which Walsh was one would win national fame as pop group Girls Aloud. It’s now 16 years since Walsh and her counterparts were fast-tracked to fame and five years since they announced their split with an arena tour and second greatest hits collection. Walsh has used the time since to focus on acting, with roles in TV’s Ackley Bridge and West End productions, including Shrek The Musical and Elf: The Musical. Now she’s branching out once again, this time into children’s fashion, with her Kimba Kids line of boys clothing available to buy through high street giant, Next. Walsh’s own nickname – given to her by Girls Aloud bandmate Cheryl Cole – is the

inspiration for the name. And the range was born of Walsh’s frustration with the options available for her own two sons, and features bold, playful designs for kids aged two to 14. Here, we speak to her about the new venture, her inspirations and collaborating with her younger brother, Adam, on the designs. Q What prompted you to design your own kids clothing line? A It came from being a mum to two boys aged three and one. Initially when shopping for them I found the options a bit dull and uninspiring, especially for boys. Everything seemed either monochrome or nautical and I was after something more fun. My brother works in the clothing industry, so the collaboration seemed like a natural one. We both had the idea and he had the capability to help with design and putting the samples into production. This is a labour of love for us. We had the idea after I had Bobby, my first child, and it’s been in the pipeline since – it didn’t get going until he was one and then I had my second child, so it’s been in development for some time and wasn’t something we wanted to rush. Q Tell us about the collaboration with Next. A We’re launching exclusively with Next but

“THERE’S PLENTY OF COLOUR BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT I FELT WAS MISSING”
~
like this. Everything else that I’ve done in my career has tended to go at 100mph. My brother and I have put our heart and soul into it, so although it’s not like everything is riding on it, it would be lovely if our hard work pays off. It is hard juggling work and motherhood but with this project I could always take the boys into the studio – though I did tend to be less productive with them there! But it was handy when childcare lets you down and things like that.
we’ve produced everything independently. They were the first high street retailer to take the collection and have been really supportive throughout the process. I hope it’s not confusing as there are so many endorsements out there, but that’s not what we are. Q How would you describe the first collection of Kimba Kids? A I don’t put my kids in anything that’s not comfortable. We’re focusing on everyday wear; comfort and affordability. That’s what’s been the guiding force behind this, so many of the items have ended up being jersey. We’ve got a brilliant factory and we’re really
happy with the quality of the clothes. There’s plenty of colour because that’s what I felt was missing from the market. I’m always taking inspiration from around me, be that Instagram, fashion or pattern trends. I enjoy the freedom with childrenswear, which means you don’t have to follow fashion quite so doggedly. There are certain signature shapes that I think we will keep because I find that when kids like something they want to wear it again and again. Q How have you found the experience of working with family? A I’ve loved being able to work on a project
Q How have you found life after Girls Aloud? Do you think you’ll have more kids? A I’ve done a lot of acting in the past. Ackley Bridge is a brilliant drama, filmed in Halifax, close to where I grew up. It’s nice to play characters that are a departure and I’m always looking at doing more acting. I’m doing a week’s residency of musical shows in Piccadilly, which is fun because I’ve enjoyed musical theatre since playing Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical. That was easier before having kids though. I did Elf: The Musical when Bobby was only 18 months old, which was challenging, so I tend to opt for shorter runs at this point. It’s always fun to see what’s around the corner in my line of work! And as for having more kids, I don’t necessarily know that I feel done! I think you just have to see if you both naturally get to that point – I wouldn’t be forcing my partner into it! kimbakids.com August 201 8

charity initiative based in East London, Stitches in Time helps women from some of East London’s most disadvantaged and marginalised communities develop skills and find productive employment in the garment industry. Along the way, it seeks to build women’s confidence, encourage greater community integration and cohesion, and provide a hub for social engagement. Mini Stitches is the charity’s own fashion brand, and exemplifies the good work they’re doing. Beautifully designed and crafted from premium fabrics, this is some of the most trend-aware and desirable children’s clothing we’ve seen all year. In fact, it’s so well made that London boutique Luna & Curious recently collaborated with Mini Stitches on an exclusive product line; a significant seal of approval. Mini Stitches’ own styles are similarly spot on – soft pantaloons, ruffle-necked cropped tees, sculptural party dresses, and screen-printed leisurewear, all suffused with a sense of creative possibility, confidence and optimism. We love the graphic-striped jumpsuits, which straddle the line between contemporary and classic with easygoing aplomb. It’s a great brand that’s reinventing the supply chain for the better – and without compromising on style. Count us in. ministitches.org

The chic interiors of the salon – foliagestrewn walls and plenty of natural light streaming in – reflect the new, all-natural treatments on offer. It looks less like a hair salon and more like a botanical garden. I try the new Gentle Magic Wash – or the Katira Hair Treatment as it’s known in the Middle East, where it’s been used for over 5,000 years. Sap from the Katira tree is mixed into a paste, and applied over the hair to rebuild damaged strands and fix broken follicles. After washing the hair twice with a natural shampoo, my therapist applies the paste to my long, dry and frizzy nest before placing me under the heat for 10 minutes. She then gives me a deep head massage, working the paste into the hair and the scalp. It’s then washed out and I go through for styling. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the stylists are true experts; I leave with a drastic yet chic cut, my head feeling lighter than it has in years. And the best part is that no chemicals are used at all, making it safe for mums and mums-to-be. harissalon.com

1 In your pan, soften the onion and pepper in a glug of olive oil. Cook for 4-5 minutes over a medium heat, stirring often. 2 When the vegetables are softened but not yet brown, squish/ grate in the garlic and cook for a further minute. Stir to combine, bashing up the tomatoes with your spoon as you warm the mixture through. 3 When things are looking well combined and sauce-like, create a dent in the sauce with the back of your spoon and crack the eggs in. Leave the pan on a very low heat for 4-5 mins (without stirring) while the eggs poach in the sauce. 4 When the eggs are thoroughly cooked (the yolk should be set, not liquid), use a large spoon to carefully lift or slide the eggs and sauce into your bowls. Scatter with coriander and allow the little one’s food to cool to a safe temperature. 5 Depending on the teeth situ, serve shakshuka straight-up or fork-mash together.

RECIPES
Baby Green Curry Serves: 2 adults + 2 little ones
Yoghurt Bark
Ingredients
Green Curry Paste: 2-3cm peeled fresh ginger • 1 garlic clove, peeled • ½ red onion, roughly diced • hand-sized bunch of coriander (stalks and leaves) • 1 tsp low/no-salt Thai fi sh sauce (a potent reduction of anchovies, rich in the rare-ish savoury flavour umami) • 4 tbsp water Curry: 1 tsp coconut oil • 1 butternut squash, diced • 1 × 400g can chickpeas, rinsed • ½ of a 400ml can coconut milk (200ml) • 1 mugful of cold water + 1 tsp salt-free vegetable bouillon/stock or 1 mugful of baby-friendly bone broth (see p.119 in the book)
Directions 1 Put all the green curry paste ingredients into a blender and whizz smooth. 2 Warm the coconut oil in a medium-sized saucepan and pour the paste in. 3 Heat gently for 2 minutes, then add the butternut squash and chickpeas. 4 Stir to coat everything in curry paste, then
Serves: 2 adults + 2 little ones
add the coconut milk and stock/broth. Bring to a simmer and cook for 12-14 minutes, lid on. 5 Next, the secret weapon: a potato masher. Softly mash the mixture to break down the squash and chickpeas, achieving a creamytextured curry that you won’t need to put through the blender for your baby. 6 Serve family-style over rice. Grown-ups can top theirs with sliced fresh chilli, lime and soy sauce. Wear bibs… everyone!
Ingredients
• 2 teacups of plain thick Greek yoghurt • ½ banana • large handful of chopped soft fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries)
Directions 1 Put the yoghurt and banana into your blender and whizz until smooth. Spread into a shallow dish (I use a deep rectangular baking tray to achieve 1cm thickness) that you’ve lined with clingfilm, and scatter your berries evenly over the top, pressing some in and leaving others on the surface. 2 Freeze for 2 hours, then use the clingfilm to lift the bark from the dish and break it up into shards as big or small as you like. 3 Spare pieces will keep in the freezer for a month. 4 If you’re concerned about the berry pieces, just whizz the berries into the yoghurtbanana mix to create smooth bark that has the same nutritional goodness.

s mums stand to learn a lot from Katie Piper. Not only is she a busy philanthropist, TV presenter and author, but also a mum of two. And she famously rebuilt her life after surviving an acid attack at the tender age of 24. In the early stages of her recovery, Katie founded The Katie Piper Foundation, the mission of which is to “have a world where scars do not limit a person’s function, social inclusion or sense of wellbeing”. She’s also since become an inspirational motivational speaker and a best-selling international author. And, most recently, she’s teamed up with entrepreneur and mama-of-four TerriAnn Nunns, of the TerriAnn 123 Diet Plan, to launch The Happy Healthy Mum Plan, a brand-new, light-hearted “mum manual” that’s designed to help mums get back to looking and feeling their best through the pair’s useful hints, tips and anecdotes on all things post-pregnancy. Katie and TeriAnn instantly hit it off after they met through mutual friends, and began sharing stories of the highs and lows of motherhood, and juggling their careers. That’s how The Happy Healthy Mum Plan came into being, and it’s full of tips, tricks and advice that helped the pair through their own weightloss journeys. That includes a dietician-approved programme filled with family-friendly recipes, as well as easy-to-follow home workouts and advice on other topics – such as how to embrace the changes in your body, breastfeeding and coping with sleep deprivation. So whatever Katie knows, we’ll now know too…

INTERVIEW
“MEMBERS CAN SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS AND CHAT WITH OTHER MUMS WHO ARE HAVING SIMILAR EXPERIENCES”
~
Why is it that you and TerriAnn got on so well from the beginning? A I think we get on so well because we have so much in common, being busy working mums. I have two kids, but TerriAnn has four so she’s a huge inspiration to me. A big part of her character is her drive and determination – both qualities I see in myself, which is why I think we’ve clicked. Q
Q You’ve found TerriAnn’s tips and advice on leading a healthy, happy and balanced lifestyle extremely useful. But what is it that you’ve taught her? A We’ve both taught each other so much, but I think the most useful bits of advice TerriAnn has taken from me are ways of practising mindfulness, and using affi rmations in everyday life to ensure a happy, balanced lifestyle alongside the healthy eating. Q What aspect of motherhood have you found the most challenging so far? A It’s been challenging in terms of trying to balance my time. My work schedule can be very busy and it’s very important to me that I get to spend quality time with my girls. There are just not enough hours in the day, so when I do spend time with them I make sure it’s never taken for granted. I just love spending time with them – they’re amazing.
How did you find your way at first in motherhood? The first time around I was quite anxious, and, of course, like any new mum there was a lot of trial and error. I also bought everything! My attitude to parenting has always been to follow my own instincts though. I try to avoid being influenced by what I read online, as it tends to trigger feelings of self-doubt. You know your own baby and will find out what works best for you both. Q
Q What advice do you have for a mum who is suffering from low self-esteem or struggling with depression, and who finds it hard to have the motivation to follow The Healthy Happy Mum Plan? A The great thing with The Healthy Happy Mum Plan is that within the membership you have full access to the Mum Hub Online Community. This is a group on Facebook that offers members full-time support and advice. Members can share their thoughts and chat with other mums who are having similar experiences. We completely understand the struggles and loneliness of motherhood and want our members to know the support is there.
A
Q What’s your secret to balancing your work and family life? A I’m hot on my diary management! Everything is run as a military operation and I make sure I have a clear idea of my weeks ahead, so I can ensure I have a good balance and can spend time with my family.
What’s next on the agenda for you? Well, The Happy Healthy Mum Plan is now in full swing so I’m so excited to get stuck into that, but I do have a few other projects coming up which are under wraps for now… watch this space! Q
How do you encourage your own children to live active, healthy lives? A I try to make healthy swaps at home, but in a fun, relaxed way. I would never use words such as “dieting” around the girls or make negative associations with foods, nor would I go into full sugar-police mode. Just small things like making sure they’re eating balanced, nutritious meals, and spending time being active and running around outside. Also tricking them so they think healthy snacks are treats! Q

id you know that the average woman uses 11,000 tampons in their lifetime? That’s around 300lbs of trash in landfills, and it takes centuries for a tampon or a pad to degrade. Clearly, that’s not very sustainable. Sure, there are now more ecofriendly products on the market, including our trusty Mooncup, but there’s also a newer, more comfortable option available – period-proof pants that are super-absorbent and leak-resistant. Here are three well-reputed brands we now have access to in the UK…

his sustainability-focused brand is already well known in the US, but in June its capsule range of period-proof underwear arrived in the UK at SODA, Selfridges. There are a range of styles, from sport to high-waist and hiphugger, all designed to manage different menstrual flows. Every pair is made with a patented four-layer technology – moisture-wicking cotton, anti-microbial lining, super-absorbent fabric and a leak-resistant barrier – and they promise breathability and odour control. You can wear them on their own or with extra protection on heavy days. £24; selfridges.com

uka is our very own UK-born brand that was founded by Ruby (an environmental scientist) and Dave (who knows his stuff when it comes to product development). The hiphugger-style period wear is simple but comfortable and incorporates a hi-tech absorbent layer (that reportedly absorbs 200 times its own weight in water and locks it in; it holds four tampons worth of blood) with anti-bacterial properties and eco-friendly fabric. Based on customer feedback, you can wear just the pants for up to eight hours on light days and around four to six on heavy days. And, thankfully, they’re machine-washable (so no gross hand washing). £25; wuka.co.uk
W
S-born brand Dear Kate is known for producing gorgeous, chic hipsters, briefs and thongs. The products are made of 100% fabric (so no plastic or films) that is moisturewicking, leak-resistant, stain-releasing and odour-fighting. What we really love about Dear Kate, however, is the fact that they also have a range of activewear and dancewear. This includes eye-catching yoga capris that protect you from leaks and stains so you can “sweat through your workout and hustle through your flow”. Who said you can’t exercise at that time of the month, huh? You can currently order online, and there’s a dedicated UK e-shop on its way. Prices vary; dearkates.com

he summer holidays are a great time to refresh and recharge. With a careful bit of planning it can also be a great time to develop key habits that will help your children thrive. Activities can include cycling, walking or learning a new board game – depending on the age of your child(ren) – but they can also include some powerful and simple ones that will stimulate yours and their brains, and help you all get in touch with your inner self. So here are my top 10 strategies to boost yours and your child’s physical and mental wellbeing this season…

listening and teach your child not to interrupt either. It is a very powerful experience when you actually feel listened to. Get into geocaching. Everyone loves a scavenger hunt. Families and groups of people can search for hidden “caches” using the GPS on your phones. You can choose from easy to tricky and you can even choose how long you want to be on the hunt for. It’s like your very own treasure hunt and such a great way to get little ones walking much further than you would have imagined!
3
FIND FUN WAYS TO FEED YOUR CHILDREN HEALTHY FOOD
Practise self-care. Teaching our children the importance of self-care is vital for their development and a great building block for their adult lives, too. Allow your child to tell you when they need to rest or when they want to read (if they can), or even offer them a bath in the middle of the day if they feel they would like to relax. It’s vital that we’re connected to our gut feelings, which are usually overridden by our schedule and to-do list. So learn to give your body and mind what it needs as often as possible.
1
Get talking. A weekly family meeting brings many benefits. Set a time and arrange a place for your family to gather. No phones or other gadgets allowed. No TV either. You can either set a topic that you would like to discuss (like the next family holiday or which rewards chart you want to get started) or allow anything to come up. You could start by asking everyone to tell each other how their week has been so far. Practise

Make “cool stuff”. The website dadcando.com is great and full of crafty ideas that bring adults and kids together, spending quality time with each other. From paper planes to dream catchers and other quirky things, it offers ideas for how to make stuff out of mostly inexpensive or recycled materials.
“TEACHING OUR CHILDREN THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE IS VITAL FOR THEIR DEVELOPMENT”

4
Bake. Whipping up treats in the kitchen can mean more than just creating yummy comfort food. In fact, by setting some time aside to spend together, baking can have a positive effect on yours and your child’s relationship, too. Smaller children can learn to measure out ingredients while older children can take charge of almost everything. By enjoying the end result (which is hopefully tasty!) it will leave you feeling super-satisfied, emotionally and physically. But watch the sugar; try to make healthy versions of your favourite treats and instill within your kids a health-conscious relationship to food.
5
Discuss goals. It can be lovely to talk with your child about their goals and dreams no matter their age. Allow your child to dream big! Then set a realistic goal that your child can achieve over the holidays. It can be as little or big as appropriate, from drawing a picture for each family member, to learning a new skill like roller blading. Setting a goal, working towards it and achieving it are empowering and positive experiences.
6
Borrow or purchase yoga cards. Yoga cards are a fun way for you and your child to embark on a journey that will be as exciting and varied as your child’s imagination. Each card shows a yoga pose and the colourful illustrations inspire hours of exploration, movement and creative play. It allows your child to become your
7
teacher, which is something they will love. You can never be too young or old to practise yoga. Try forest bathing. Most of us are aware that spending time in nature helps us to de-stress. A walk on the beach or a stroll in the countryside can make us feel so much better. But do we know why? The Japanese practise of “forest bathing” – basically just being in the presence of trees – is scientifically proven to improve your health. It became part of a national public health programme in Japan back in the early ’80s. So go outside, surround yourself by trees and improve your immune functions!
8
Have a go at something new. Discuss with your child what it is that you could try out that is new to you both. Pick something age- and budget-appropriate. This does not need to be a bungee-jump! You could order some clay and try your hand at making a vase. Try out a new healthy recipe, which you could let your child pick out of a magazine. Or head to your nearest car boot sale and have a go at selling some old toys.
9
Go on an adventure. Turn a normal day into an exciting journey and see if you can take a train, bus and/or boat to get to your destination. We often go somewhere for a day out, may it be a zoo, a museum or a restaurant. But why not turn the “getting there” into an adventure in itself?

t’s possible to sum Luna & Curious up in two words: dream boutique. Possible, but not quite fair – because even this most enticing of sobriquets can’t do justice to the range and quality of goodies stocked in the brand’s stylish London emporium. Centred around the company’s own range of high-end clothing (for little ones and mamas), homeware and accessories, the three founders describe it as a “tiny department store”. But the strength of Luna & Curious isn’t in the number of items on offer – though they do manage to carry a surprising amount – but in the sheer loveliness of every last thing. Simply put, it’s no surprise that three very tasteful women are behind the brand, and that they’re still involved in every element of the business they’ve been building for over a decade. Their stylish fi ngerprints are all over the shop’s selection, from their own artfully boho yet beautifully luxe designs to the items they source from like-minded makers across the globe. If you’re ever stuck for gifting inspiration, one trip to their shop or website will cure the affl iction. And if you need to know what styles will be fi lling the wardrobes of the most stylish young ‘uns next year, pay a visit to Luna & Curious this year – they’re a reliable indicator (and often originator) of the best ideas about to come down the pipe. We’re big fans. Can you tell? lunaandcurious.com

new book published by Gestalten is full of ideas on how to create spaces that are attractive to adults and children alike. It’s time to ditch the stereotype of exhausted parents sacrificing personal style on the altar of the family – nowadays, your interior can be inviting, orderly, chic and – yes – serene while still servicing all your little ones’ needs. For a glimpse of how, have a read of our exclusive extract from Little Big Rooms... “A Brio train runs through the living room, a bassinet stands in the parents’ bedroom, and a toddler makes noise on a miniature-format wooden stove in the kitchen. This is a scenario that all parents can identify with: children are suddenly everywhere – and if not the children themselves, then their colourful traces of odds and ends. Children like to make the entire home their territory, and not only when their own rooms are small. It is a positive thing when children develop an imagination and are permitted to implement their ideas at home, especially since it is seldom possible to simply send them out into the city alone. Children should, however, still learn that: there is adult territory that I may only use to a limited

extent – and only with permission – and there is my territory, where I can do as I please, as long as I tidy up again later. If corners for children are firmly installed in spaces for adults – for instance a play kitchen (there are beautiful models by Brio or Djeco) in the real kitchen, or a table for arts and crafts (for example by Richard Lampert) and/or a reading corner in the living room – such areas should always have enough boxes, drawers or baskets in which the little conquerors can quickly stow away their playthings after use. If parents encounter resistance in connection with tidying up, we recommend threatening children with the vacuum-cleaner scenario: if it comes out, everything will be gone afterward. People who like rugs can easily share them with their children in the living room, also because flooring made of natural materials is much more robust than one might think.” August 201 8

TIPS
G oin g toxin-f re e :
TOP TIPS
Marie Lavabre and Sophie Lavabre-Barrow, the mother-and-daughter team behind Kinn Living share their five tips on how to achieve a toxin-free home
Use eco-friendly green cleaning products that are open and transparent about the ingredients they use; you don’t need for a product to have been dyed hot pink to know that it works. You should be as careful about the products you use in your home as the ones you use in your beauty regime. That’s why we offer skincare and eco-friendly home cleaning products with the same level of organic certification.
Avoid artificial scents (whether in candles, room diffusers or the artificial scent of a cleaning product). Instead, try to buy an organic and essential oil equivalent, and cleaning products that use organic and pure essential oils. Once you have smelled real essential oils and all the varieties and subtle difference between them, you won’t be able to go back to the fake stuff!
Open your windows. We know this is obvious, but allowing fresh air to circulate will help keep your home feeling and smelling fresh. Studies show that our homes can be five times more toxic than the air outside and we are creating these toxic environments simply because of the household products we use every day.
Introduce indoor plants. These are great at helping to remove some of the 900 polluting chemical toxins found in the air of our own homes – so the more the merrier! By introducing house plants you can start to remove these harmful compounds from indoor air as the plants absorb harmful gases through their leaves and roots.
Ditch the pesticides and GMOs! Try swapping your food for organic equivalents and cooking from fresh ingredients. You’ll not only enjoy a much better quality of life, you’ll also be helping the wider environment by not supporting harsh, chemical-pesticide-heavy farms and all the environmental side effects that go with them.

here are many ways a hotel can make an impression: striking contemporary design, ostentatious luxury, sheer scale. Chateau Les Carrasses opts for the rarer and more arresting tactic of looking like it’s been torn from the pages of a fairytale. This is the kind of chateau people share images of on Pinterest, its circular turrets and crenellated terraces rising Disneylike against the sky. The fact that you don’t see it clearly until you’ve driven through its picturesque grounds and up its sweeping drive only emphasises its loveliness. And yet for all that, its vibe is relaxed rather than imperious.

THE AMBIENCE
he staff are friendly and informal with each other and the guests – many of whom clearly return year after year – while the décor is tastefully understated. A sense of restful charm pervades the place – the amazing glass orangerie that sits behind the main building being a case in point. Of venerable age and possibly iconic origin (it may have been designed by Gustave Eiffel, the architect behind the Eiffel Tower), it doesn’t command attention so much as quietly invite it. It’s the ideal place to sit and sip a cocktail while the kids explore.

THE AREA
he hotel sits atop a small ridge overlooking its own gardens and acre upon acre of vineyards. Beyond the vineyards is a line of blue hills; beyond the hills, the sea. Closer at hand is the small but beautifully formed town of Capestang, through which runs the justly celebrated Canal du Midi, a tree-lined watercourse speckled with gleaming white motorboats and the odd British-style canal barge. Boat trips are, of course, readily available, while a short drive will bring you into the heart of the stunning Languedoc countryside. Slightly further afield are the coastal lagoons of Etang de Bages and the historic towns of Narbonne and Beziers.

comforts alongside historic original features, while the more modern – and very sympathetically designed – accompanying buildings offer larger accommodation for families and groups. Some have private pools or hot tubs, all have terraces or gardens, and they’re furnished in the same spirit as the wider hotel – with relaxed luxury and easygoing comfort. Well-equipped kitchens, barbecues, washing machines and tumble driers make travelling with little ones seem like a breeze.

ikes and scooters of all sizes are available to borrow at no cost, there’s a huge (and heated) shared swimming pool, a relaxed bar-café and a (slightly) more formal restaurant. There’s also a kids’ club run by a local artist and firmly focused on healthy, creative, open-air play. While your littles are lapping up the fun, you can try wine tasting in the on-site cave. There are regular evening events and the hotel can help you to arrange a wider set of activities in the local area, including golf, horse-riding and, of course, canal-boat adventures.

hateau St Pierre de Serjac is like Chateau Les Carrasses’ urbane older brother. The architecture of the main building is similarly enchanting, blending storybook charm with a Hausmannlike refinement. Leaving the road, you pass through the chateau’s gates and follow a long, straight drive through the vines, flanked by cypress trees. The hotel stands on an incline overlooking the domaine, imposing yet impossibly elegant.

ACCO M M O DAT I O N s with Carrasses, you can opt for a classic hotel experience with a suite in the main building, or plump for larger self-catering accommodation in the modern (but aesthetically appropriate) buildings ranged around the grounds. We stayed in a threebedroom townhouse with private garden and pool (fenced and gated for safety), en suite bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen and openplan living area. The interiors are beautifully done – restrained yet luxurious, traditional yet completely contemporary, with a real sense of quality craftsmanship throughout.

As such, there’s no excuse not to get out and explore, starting with the friendly neighbouring village of Puissalicon (one of the Languedoc’s celebrated circulade towns, built in concentric circles) and finishing up at the beaches of Sérignan and Portiragnes, a 25-minute drive to the south.

nce again, activities are many and varied. There’s wine tasting for the adults and regular family-friendly events – our girls loved the evening of flamenco music and dance – as well as horseriding, golf and (in high season) a daily kids’ club. There’s also a stylish restaurant, a heated communal swimming pool and a beautifully designed spa. The latter offers a full menu of sensuous treatments plus a heated indoor pool, solarium and gardens – ideal for catching a little me-time while the rest of the family engage in more active pursuits.

A R E W E N E A R LY THERE YET? The season of road trips and long-haul flights is upon us, so education expert and mum-of-four, Fiona McKenzie, shares her top tips on keeping kids amused on the journey Wo r d s F I O N A M C K E N Z I E
H
ow often do we take a long journey with the children? Not often. Then suddenly in the summer we expect the kids to behave beautifully for hours on end while we fly around the world, and drive for what feels like days. Knowing how to keep your children entertained on long journeys can be a nightmare for many parents. That is why Fiona McKenzie is sharing her best ideas to help your family not only survive these trips but also make them fun.

“HAVE SOME QUIZZES READY ABOUT YOUR DESTINATION FOR THEM TO DO ON THE WAY”

GET ORGANISED
P
lanning for a long journey is the number one step to ensuring it goes smoothly. Pack a bag filled with magnetic board games, colouring books, crayons, sticker books and magazines. Anything you think your children will like! On top of that, make some Are We There Yet? packs as back-up. These can be filled with little surprises for your children ready to bring out in moments of need. And always carry treats and healthy snacks; they will keep you just as sane as they do your kids!
ENSURE YOUR KIDS GET EXCITED ABOUT THE DESTINATION
G
etting your children enthused about where they are going is a surefire way of making the journey there more tolerable. Encourage your children to keep a travel journal and include some cool facts about the destination. Or get them to take photos on their phone or a digital camera so they can document their trip. This is a great way to make your holiday educational, too. Have some quizzes ready about your destination for them to do on the way. Not only will this help to pass the time but it will also get them excited and learn about where they are going.
PLAY GAMES BUT THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
I
nstead of the usual I-Spy, try I-Don’tSpy where the answer can be anything! A simple “I don’t spy with my little eye something beginning with M” can take hours before they end up at Marmalade. Make bingo cards in advance on the things you are likely to come across on the way – the first to get all of their squares checked off wins a prize. A great game for the whole family is Alphabets. Pick a category such as “Fruits and Vegetables” or “Cartoons” and go round everyone saying as many as you can beginning with A. Once completed, move onto B. You will be amazed at how the time passes! Or play the “Round the World” version, where you have to think of a country or city that begins with the last letter of the previous word. For example: Dubai, followed by India, followed by Austria, and so on.
TRY SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE PODCASTS
P
odcasts are a fantastic bonus on a long journey; they can be educational but try to pick ones that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Here are some of our own favourites for you to try on your next trip:

MAKE LONG JOURNEYS MORE TOLERABLE AND GET THE KIDS EXCITED ABOUT THE DESTINATION
Wow in the World – This is a brilliant scientific quest through space, technology, anatomy and beyond. Join hosts Mindy and Guy as they explore new discoveries and try to answer some of the biggest questions about the universe. The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel – A mystery series that centres around Mars Patel, who goes off to find his missing friends. It has been compared to recent hit show Stranger Things, and will have your whole family hooked from episode one. What If World – No question is too silly to explore on this podcast. What if sharks had legs? What if it rained candy? What if cars could talk? It makes for an incredibly engaging listen for the whole family, exploring these worlds in imaginative detail.
Story Pirates – Real actors tell stories that have been written by kids. The silliness of where the stories go will have your children entertained for hours. The Past & The Curious – Each episode explores historical figures of the past through stories and songs. It celebrates great achievements in history in a fun and entertaining way.
IF ALL ELSE FAILS, USE THE IPAD TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
I
f ever there was a time to not feel guilty about letting your child binge on a screen, it is on a long journey. But it does not have to be mind numbing! Make sure it is loaded with creative apps and educational games. Playing Scrabble on the phone with
everyone joining in can keep everyone engaged, or timed quizzes such as Sporcle can get very competitive. Do make sure you have a few films downloaded in advance just in case.
GIVE THEM STRUCTURE
L
ong journeys are boring, there is no doubt about that, but help ease the time for your children by breaking it up into manageable chunks. Stop regularly and aim for somewhere where your children can run around to let off some excess energy while the adults can enjoy a much-needed caffeine hit. Also help break down the time by having a countdown to arrival, with a new activity each hour, or a signal that says we will be stopping soon.

Michael FATICA
Lead consultant osteopath at The Mayfair Clinic discusses why the post-pregnancy months are critical for back health themayfairclinic.com Q Why are new mums vulnerable to back injury in the weeks and months after giving birth? A New mums risk chronic long-term back problems if they ignore niggling aches and pains in the year after giving birth. The physical stresses of pregnancy, childbirth and looking after babies can place considerable stress on the lower back.
TO REDUCE BACK STRAIN: • Hold baby close to your centre, not with your arms stretched in front • Limit the time the baby is perched on your hips • Sit when holding baby for long periods • Take care with car seats – forward bending and twisting is the easiest way to injure a lower back disc • Use baby carriers sparingly

PERFORM THESE EXERCISES 2-3 TIMES DAILY TO ALLEVIATE BACK PAIN DURING AND POSTPREGNANCY: • Stand against a wall for a few moments with heels, bottom, middle-back and head touching the wall to “reset your posture” • Lie on your back and slowly flatten the arch in your back 10-20 times (should take approximately 60-90 seconds) • Go swimming; even a paddle in a pool will help, but avoid the breaststroke • For pregnant women only: sleep on your side and use pillows to keep your neck straight, not tilted to one side While back rehabilitation is often low on a new mum’s list of priorities, the stress of childbirth can highlight and even worsen a pre-existing weakness in the lower back. It’s therefore important for new mums to see an osteopath or chiropractor to get their spine examined early on, thereby preventing chronic problems.

Can nappy rash be prevented? No matter how careful you are, most babies are likely to get nappy rash at some time. Nappy rash is usually mild and can be managed with a good skincare routine and a barrier ointment. Taking care of your baby’s delicate skin is essential in both treating and preventing nappy rash. Following these simple steps will help: • Lie your baby on a towel and leave your baby’s nappy off as often as you can, to let fresh air get to the skin. Q A
T HE EXPERTS
• Change wet or soiled nappies as soon as possible. • Clean the nappy area thoroughly using plain water or alcohol- and fragrance-free wipes. • Don’t use talcum powder as it contains ingredients that could irritate your baby’s skin. • Try to bath your baby every day, but don’t use soap or bubble bath. • Gently pat rather than rub your baby’s bottom dry and avoid vigorous rubbing. • Use a suitable barrier ointment at each nappy change. Most mild cases of nappy rash can be easily treated with an ointment from your pharmacy and by following this skincare routine, but if you are worried always seek the advice of a healthcare professional.

Dawn Kelly has worked in the healthcare profession as a qualified health visitor and lecturer for over 20 years, and is a member of the Colief Expert Panel. colief.com Q My baby has developed cradle cap. What can I do to get rid of it other than keeping the area clean? A Cradle cap is a very common and harmless skin condition that is thought to be caused by overactive sebaceous glands on your baby’s scalp. Although it tends to clear up on its own in a few weeks or months, it is possible to treat your baby’s dry, flakey scalp if it is troubling you. You should defi nitely not pick at the flakes as this will simply irritate the skin. Instead, you could try massaging
a gentle oil such as Colief Baby Scalp Oil into your baby’s scalp and then brushing the scalp with a very soft baby brush to loosen the flakes. After gently brushing, wash your baby’s hair and scalp with a mild baby shampoo to prevent a build-up of scales. You can do this every other day or when you bath your baby. If your baby’s scalp appears red and irritated and you suspect that it has become infected, be sure to consult your GP.

LEADING L A DY Sophie Cooper on finding postnatal inspiration for her premium denim brand
Q How did you originally come up with the concept for your denim brand, I Am Denim? A About a year after my son was born I had to undergo major stomach surgery. It was in the weeks after recovery that I found something as simple as pulling on a pair of jeans an absolute struggle and an uncomfortable one. Searching for the right pair made me realise how much we all struggle after pregnancy, c-section and surgery to find a great pair of jeans that are comfortable, look good and are of a high quality. I wanted to create jeans that everyone could wear with total confidence and that’s how I Am Denim was born! Q How do you balance working life (especially the demanding nature of running your own business) with the responsibilities of motherhood? A Running my own business is very demanding, and you do have to consciously be aware of finding that balance. With access to technology 1 04

round-the-clock and from any location I find my hours can be flexible, which is great and makes things so much easier. If I haven’t completed everything in the day due to a school event I always have the option of working at night from my laptop in my pyjamas! For me family comes first and so I find if I plan my hours and schedule my tasks for each day it’s really beneficial and more productive. Having a good support network of friends and family around you during school holidays can also really help. Q Do you support flexible working? If so, in what way do you do so and is it something that more companies should be championing? A Absolutely! It can be a real struggle for mums getting back into the workplace and often the cost of childcare can literally mean the reality of mums working for nothing. With 24/7 access, flexible working allows for higher morale, better health and far more productivity. For businesses to thrive, being open to a flexible

more refreshed and focused and enhances family time.
Q What’s the most challenging aspect of running a business in today’s fast-paced world? A For me, personally, it’s knowing when to stop or take a break. It’s very easy even on days off to be thinking about new designs and ideas or tasks to be completed the next day. Making sure you have a digital detox on days off is really beneficial and actually helps you feel
Q What advice would you give to other new mums looking to start their own businesses? A Honestly, if you’re passionate about it then go for it. If you believe in what you’re doing and have a vision then never ever give up. People often like to give you their opinion along the way, sometimes negative, and they sometimes dress it up as advice – but in your heart
you’ll know what’s right for you and your business. Have a plan in place, and always be prepared for things to take longer than they do. Lastly, never be afraid to ask for help or support. Starting out by yourself takes a lot of courage, self-belief and determination, and is so worth it. For me, being able to help people feel more confident and comfortable, and enabling them to look great in the jeans I design, is really special. iamdenim.co.uk August 201 8

Summer
CAMP FUN From daytime fun to an adventure week in the beautiful British countryside, summer camps offer kids (and parents) time off. Here’s our pick of providers... Wo r d s R AC H E L W E B B
W
hile summer camp is a North American institution, here in the UK we’ve been somewhat slower on the uptake. But camps offer fun and adventure for children as young as three – manna for busy working parents and those who want their children to get more out of their summer break. The best camps offer structure and experienced leaders who guide children but also let them enjoy it. While high-adrenaline fun and games are usually the order of the day, we’ve included a couple of specialist providers for children who want to get creative, scientific or both.

Richer Education
A
trip to a museum may be enjoyable, but a Richer Education summer camp offers an exciting hands-on experience children will never forget. Even better, they’ll be learning real, transferable skills in some of the most valuable (and stereotypically tricky) areas: the sciences and STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Richer Education is renowned for operating weekend and holiday courses and camps that inspire children to take a more vibrant, practical interest in the complex wonders of the physical and digital world. What’s special? The location, for a start: Richer Education summer camps take place at the world-famous Imperial College, London, a short walk from South Kensington tube and a stone’s throw from the country’s grandest museums. The air is abuzz with wonder and possibility – and the camp themes tune into it with dazzling inventiveness. In one five-day science course, your little one might cover
everything from Amazing Aeronautics to Pirate Science, while STEM camps introduce kids to applied subjects including robotics, computer coding and electrical engineering. (We particularly like the sound of Crazy Cosmetics and Science Around London Town.) There’s a definite emphasis on drawing out the fun and colour of scientific discovery, and youngsters will get stuck in to projects that put their imaginations to use while fostering greater scientific insight and understanding. Age range: 4-14 Good to know: Running from mid-July to the end of August, each Science and STEM camp runs for five days, 8.40am to 3.30pm, and is non-residential. There’s a 10% discount for multiple-week or sibling bookings. Children take their own packed lunches as well as snacks and enough water for the day. All levels of knowledge are served and children are welcome to take home any objects they make during the week. The only caveat is that camps tend to sell out fast, so be sure to get your little ones’ places booked well in advance. richereducation.co.uk

his London and Home Counties specialist has been running school holiday camps for over 35 years and its flexibility is one of the big draws for busy working parents, with daycare and fun built in. Locations are conveniently spread, and include Mill Hill School, Godolphin & Latymer in Hammersmith, Ursuline Prep School in Wimbledon and Halstead Prep in Woking. Croydon High School has been added to the camp locations for this year. What’s special? Playtime Camp (3-4 years) is a paced blend of lively and focused activities, from cheerleading and adventure playground to mask making, biscuit decorating and collage. You’ll also find crowd-pleasing karaoke, drama, dance and a bouncy castle. Move on up to Mania (8-11) and kids can try their hand at archery, climbing, badminton, tag rugby and water polo. Not all activities are available at all camps, but enough variety is built in to appeal to their passions and widen horizons. All camps offer age-appropriate extra options – from immersive crafts workshops to horse-riding and motorsports. Age range: 3-16 Good to know: Camps are very flexible, with everything from one-day to week-long or

multiple week passes. Extended days can be booked at most camps. You can pre-book a lunch or send your child in with a packed lunch. All children have at least six activities a day, all logged in their personal timetable. While it’s dressed up as fun, they do sneak in mind-expanding options such as 3D modelling. And, a real child-pleaser, you have the option of an escorted day trip to Go Ape in some camps in 2018.

Holiday workshops give children as young as four the opportunity to take to the stage. workshops across London and the south east, and in some lovely locations such as Alleyn’s School, Dulwich and King’s College School, Wimbledon. What’s special? For children already plotting their conquest of the West End or Hollywood, this is heaven. But even if your child is not a thespian or dancer in the making, this is a highly active and productive workshop. Don’t expect Ibsen – Legally Blonde The Musical and Trolls are among the summer productions promised in 2018 – so childpleasing. This year’s birthday will be marked by lots of events, including a Guinness World Record attempt in July when Stagecoachers around the world will stage a simultaneous performance of Beauty and the Beast Junior. Age range: 4-18 Good to know: Stagecoach operates a franchise system, and each school is led by a professional principal and team, with experience in both performing and teaching performance. Holiday workshops can be a good taster for children who may want to take things further and join the regular school. Some summer workshops offer two shows suitable for younger and older age groups. Sibling discounts may be available. stagecoach.co.uk
XUK
F
amily-owned XUK attracts children from across the UK to its residential summer camps. Its dedicated English Summer School means you also find a great mix of young people from across Europe and even further afield. Special attention is paid to splitting camps by age, so that kids have the right environment and activities. Its London day camps are perfect for younger children. What’s special? Mini Minors day camp is a split-age activity camp (3-4 years or 5-6 years) with lots of fun, a resident clown and special activities such as fencing. From age 7, children move on to XUK day camp, giving them the option to choose activities that most interest them. Both camps are located in Brookland School in leafy Hampstead Garden Suburb. The Activity week-long residential camp is located in idyllic surroundings at Abberley Hall School, Worcestershire and includes trips out to cultural hotspots such as Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon, plus a smorgasbord of activities, from zorbing to quad biking. Age range: Day camps 3-13; residential camps 6-17 Good to know: Lots of children here

are repeat bookings and the day camp (rated Ofsted Outstanding) gives them the opportunity to move on up in familiar surroundings before, perhaps, trying out a residential camp. Half days are available here and summer afternoon swimming courses offered at day camp are a treat that also give kids valuable skills. xukcamps.com
Activate Camps
T
he emphasis at Activate Camps is on high-energy sports and activities that get children trying new things. Camps take place across England, and with excellent locations across the south east in well-equipped locations such
as Berkhamsted School, Dulwich College, Merchant Taylors’ School, Sevenoaks and St George’s College, Weybridge. Not all activities are available at all schools, so check by location and activity programme. What’s special? For younger children (aged 5 plus), the Multi-Activity Camps offer themed activities, including sport and nature, and with “pick and mix” options from T-shirt designing to treasure hunts and crazy Olympics. Sports-mad kids will love the sports-themed camps, including Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy, Pro:Direct Soccer Academy, Ultimate Lacrosse Experience and Louis Smith Gymnastics Experience. The new Netball Fever course is custom-designed by Tamsin Greenway. Sports stars are part of the experience; for instance, every Cricket Academy includes a visit from a current or past pro cricketer. Age range: 5-16 Good to know: Camps run from three to five days and are non-residential, with discounts for multiple weeks or siblings. Early drop-off and late collection is available at some camps. Children take their own lunches, with careful supervision ensuring they stay hydrated. activatecamps.co.uk August 201 8

125 years of
GIRL POWER Susan Pepper, head of The Study Prep in Wimbledon, talks about her school’s ethos and 125-year history of educating girls for careers and life
T
he Study Preparatory School, Wimbledon, has been educating girls since 1893, when a local governess set up a small school from the study of a private home in Wimbledon Village. Demand for places soon grew, and a beautiful purpose-built school, Spencer House in Peek Crescent, opened its doors to local girls in 1901. The school went from strength to strength during the 20th century, and acquired the Wilberforce House site in the early 1990s, to accommodate the

high demand for prep school places in the area. A Wimbledon resident myself, I have been Headmistress since January 2011, and I am proud to be at the helm of a successful non-selective girls’ prep school, with many achievements across academics, sport and the creative arts. This year saw a record-breaking 39 scholarships awarded to the Year 6 group by leading senior schools. However, The Study is not only about academic and sporting achievements, but also a creative ethos. Arts Council England has this year recognised this by awarding the school Artsmark Gold

for the third time. The girls enjoy a variety of creative experiences, from residential choir trips and performing on stage at The New Wimbledon Theatre, to taking part in a huge array of workshops, trips, and visits. As this year marks the 125th anniversary of the school, we are looking forward to welcoming back old girls of The Study – opening our doors to alumnae for a special celebration event. Spencer House was recently refurbished with a newly landscaped playground, and this celebration is a chance for the school’s alumnae to meet up with old friends, relive happy memories, and see the school looking at its best. There are exciting plans in the pipeline to improve the facilities at the Wilberforce House site, too, for the benefit of the existing girls and for future generations. The school has many unique strengths, but if I had to sum up what we’re about, it would be the warmth and sense of community of a traditional village school with the facilities of a preparatory school. I am very proud of the fact that it is the happiness of the girls, their solid friendships and their love of learning that stays with them as they move on to their senior schools.
