t’s here: 2020, a new year and an exciting new decade. Here’s to a good one mamas. Starting as we mean to go on, this month I met Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill to discover how she’s helping mamas and mamas-to-be to optimise their fitness, prepare for labour and recover from birth. And on the topic of wellbeing, we’ve also got the best beauty treatments for the new year, and London’s top gyms and wellness destinations with childcare. Elsewhere in this issue, YouTube vlogger Louise Pentland tells us about her new podcast Mothers' Meeting; we meet founder of La Coqueta and mama-of-five Celia Munoz; and Koru Kids' Rachel Carrell tells us how she is revolutionizing the childcare industry. And finally, we’ve got our biggest buggy guide yet to make sure you get out and about in style this January. Enjoy!

CONTEMPORARY HIGHCHAIR Reviewed by Mamas & Papas Parent Approved Panellist Ali Buckley @homewiththebuckleys

I

prefer simplicity when it comes to highchairs for many reasons. I like designs that are practical and stylish and for me, the sleek design of the Bop Highchair does exactly that. I have a fairly contemporary kitchen with lots of Scandinavian designs and clean lines. I wanted a highchair that was not only comfortable and practical for my little one, but could be in our kitchen all the time and that didn’t affect the overall feel. The Bop is suitable up to 15kg and has adjustable legs, so that when baby gets bigger you can turn it into a little seat, which is a total win for when Marlow is a toddler. It was also really easy to assemble and took us less than half an hour to build! It also has an easy to clean design, with a grey foam insert to keep baby’s bum nice and comfy. The tray has a cup holder which doubles nicely as somewhere to put some baby led weaning snacks and the harness is super secure. The footrest is a great addition, and although my son’s feet don’t quite reach it yet, it actually catches quite a lot of the food he drops – which means less bending down for me! For a high chair under £50 I think it really delivers on style and comfort. Bop Contemporary Highchair, £49; mamasandpapas.com

WORK Rachel Carrell on launching childcare app Koru Kids and the business’s new family matching service

I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G

Q What is Koru Kids and what made you want to set it up? A When I had my first baby, I was horrified at the lack of childcare options, so I founded Koru Kids. We’re building an entirely new childcare system from scratch, using modern technology. Koru Kids specialise in ‘after school care’, as that’s a time of day that is really tricky for lots of families. Through Koru Kids, parents get a regular nanny who looks after the children at home so the kids can go to their after school activities, chill out, have dinner, and parents can come home to have quality time with them before bedtime. Koru Kids nannies are energetic, enthusiastic, flexible and reliable – and we employ both younger and older people, a rare thing in the childcare industry. We

INTERVIEW

“We’ve delivered hundreds of thousands of hours of after school care in London”

As soon as I had my first paying customer, I started raising investment, and that gave me confidence to also bring on my first employee. Then we just kept growing from there.

also take care of all the administration and payroll. Since our inception in 2016, we’ve delivered hundreds of thousands of hours of after school care in London and train and deploy more than a hundred new nannies every week. We’ve recently raised £10 million pounds in Series A investment from tech company Atomico to expand our offering. I was driven to set up Koru Kids when I had my first baby and realised how difficult, expensive and exhausting it is to sort out childcare. In particular, after-school care that covers flexible working hours is really difficult to find. When I started I presumed there would be lots of people trying to innovate too but soon discovered that wasn’t the case. Over time my team and I developed our triple mission: to help working parents juggle the hardest years of their life; to help caregivers thrive in a difficult role; and to give children a childhood full of everyday adventures, setting them up for life. Q How long did it take to get the business up and running? A Depending on how you think about it, either 6 months or about 36 years… It took about 6 months between first setting up a test website and getting my first paying customer. But it took 36 years to take that first step at all. I always knew I’d start a business, and I’m glad I waited until I’d found the mission that I was really passionate about.

Q Is there anything you would do differently if you could go back now? A A massive thing I have learned is the importance of really great user research in the early stages. I thought I was doing good user research early on but I now know that I wasn’t. My ‘interviews’ with parents were plagued by confirmation bias and wishful thinking. This caused us to make the wrong thing initially, which probably cost us about 6-9 months before we figured out the hard way that it wasn’t working. I’ve learned from this and now I put a lot of emphasis on doing really good qualitative research as well as the data analysis that we do. If I were to start anything new again a great user researcher would be one of the first people I’d look for. Q Tell us about your new FamilyFamily matching service… A I am so excited about the potential of nanny share, it’s a brilliantly simple concept. One nanny looks after children from two families at once, and the children get to spend time together. Each family pays less and the nanny gets paid more. Beautiful! The main problem with this for many families is that it’s hard to find the ‘other’ family – the one you match-with to share your nanny. So we built a free tool that helps parents looking to share care of their kids find one another. Each family registers their interest on the Family-Finder tool, stipulates their requirements, i.e. what days and times they are looking for care, and then if it’s a match, they can chat online, meet up and go forward from there.

Q Is there anything that has really surprised you about the childcare industry? A Just how broken it is from every angle. There are so, so many problems to solve: the cost, the inconvenience, the quality, the inconsistent training, the extra challenge of emergency care, the complexity of all the moving parts. It kills me that we’re not solving all these problems yet (although we are working on it!). Q And finally, what’s it like being a female founder and a mother? A I’m not going to lie, I am occasionally jealous of my single founder friends who can throw themselves into startup life, including all the parties and trips. Pre-kids, I used to work very intense long hours and I can’t do that anymore. And I’m not going to pretend that combining having kids with being a startup CEO is easy. I had a baby in the middle of a fundraising round, for one thing. However, I prefer to think of the advantages that having a family brings. Cuddling my kids puts everything in perspective. My husband’s support is absolutely crucial. And because the mission of my startup is all about helping families, my whole life feels aligned. korukids.co.uk @korukids_london Januar y 2020

mama h ood Q&A

INSTA MAMA

YouTube vlogger, author and influencer Louise Pentland on launching her new podcast Mothers’ Meeting @louisepentland

Q Tell us about Mothers’ Meeting. What’s it all about? A Mothers’ Meeting is a fun, uplifting podcast featuring both social media and traditional celebrity mums discussing the highs and lows (and everything in between) of parenting! We go off piste a lot! Q Each episode has two celebrity guests. Who has been the most interesting so far? A It’s very hard to choose because everyone has a journey and a story to tell, but I loved talking to Siobhan from The Positive Birth Company. She recognised that many women can’t afford hypnobirthing classes (often hundreds of pounds) and so launched a ‘digital pack’ where she put the entire course online to buy for about £40, and she’s absolutely smashed it! She’s so passionate about women feeling like utter goddesses, so knowledgeable, I just loved having her on the podcast! Q Were there particular parenting issues that were really important to you to discuss? A I’m always really keen to get across the message that we’re all muddling through together. Doesn’t matter if you’re a popstar or not, motherhood is a great leveller.

Q You’re a super-mama with a hugely successful YouTube channel and a trilogy of bestselling books. How have you managed to make time for a new project? A I’m excessively keen – I can always make room for something if it sounds fun! I’ve always wanted to give a podcast a go so I jumped at this chance and I’m so glad I did! Q You were crowned the nation’s favourite ‘mumfluencer’ earlier this year. What are the best and worst things about being an influencer? A There are definitely more good things than bad, so it’s hard to choose the best, but I’m going to say the unique experiences I’ve been able to have. Like hosting book signings and meeting the people who read my work, having women I’ve admired for years in the podcast recording studio or taking my children to amazing events. The worst side is that you are judged constantly. You can be the juiciest peach in the bowl but there’ll always be someone who doesn’t like peaches. Q What do your daughters think of your success? A I don’t think they consider what I’ve done in terms of success yet, but

I know Darcy thinks it’s really ‘cool’. Pearl currently only cares about two things – Peppa Pig and ‘bizgits’, so I’ll have to get back to you on that! Q And finally, what are the best and worst bits about being a mum? A Again, more good than bad. Best bits are watching them grow, learn and bloom. Worst bits are always feeling tired, poosplosions and finding rogue bits of Lol Doll in your bed at 3am!

S PA N I S H CRAFT

Absolutely Mama meets Celia Munoz, mama-of-five and founder of childrenswear brand La Coqueta I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G

Q What made you decide to set up a kids clothing label? A I decided to create my own clothing label because I was dissatisfied with what was available on the market at the time. I wanted to find elegant, well-finished clothes at an affordable price and the options were limited, not particularly creative nor practical. I used to dress my children when they were babies in Spanish clothes and people were very admiring of it, I guess I developed some great insight. Q Did your own motherhood journey play a part in the decision to launch the business? A It did! I felt there were great synergies between the way my children dressed and understanding what mothers like me were looking for when it came to dressing their little ones. I was lucky because people trusted me in what we were offering and that’s how the business grew, it’s been a slow process of word of mouth, which is paying off. I connected with other mothers through our experiences and in a way, the way our children dressed, I found this particularly motivating when it came to launch La Coqueta. Q Where do you get the inspiration for each collection? A I feel I have several sources which are very complimentary. Firstly my main source is our faithful customer base, we keep a very open dialogue with them to understand what they need and how this evolves as their children grow up. My own children have been and still are a great source of inspiration. I guess the beauty of having two girls and three boys of all sizes and ages has allowed

mamah o o d INTERVIEW

“My own children have been and still are a great source of inspiration”

me to understand the shapes that suit them best. My last source of inspiration is my own taste and upbringing, what I would like my children to wear based on what I like, what I grew up with and the current trends in adult fashion, which I follow of course. Q Your pieces are ‘proudly made in Spain’ and designed in London. What makes Spanish craftsmanship special? A They are indeed made in Spain. Spanish craftsmanship is very special and has been in ‘hiding’ until a few years ago. When La Coqueta started, very few people were selling Spanish clothes in the Anglo-Saxon markets and I feel we helped with the popularisation of Spanish clothes for children. The attention to detail (a handmade touch), the finishing of the clothes with beautiful trims, colourful palettes on prints, the classic shapes reminiscent of old times and the fit (generally well made Spanish dresses fit like a glove on children’s bodies) make Spanish clothes very popular and special. Q What’s the most important thing for you when you’re designing a La Coqueta piece? A It needs to be recognisable, mothers need to relate to it (I like to think they can see themselves when they were little), elegant with a luxurious feel but yet affordable and makes a very good hand-me-down so that several siblings or generations can wear it.

Q What have you learned since setting up the brand? And is there anything you would do differently? A That you are no one without a really good team and letting people do what they are best at. I always try to surround myself with people who are smarter, more innovative and experienced than me, I think this is key. There are so many things I would do differently, I wouldn’t know where to start! I would have hired better people earlier on for sure although it’s hard to see this when you are starting a business. Q What do your kids think of La Coqueta? And are your family involved in the business? A Some of my children cannot wait to grow out of La Coqueta so that they can wear other brands that look in a way more grown up! I guess I have been a bit of a dictator from that perspective, particularly for my daughter Flavia who has been wanting to dress like her classmates for quite a few years now, that means extremely casually. She’s 11 now and funnily enough she now advises me on what I should design for the next season. Remarkably quite a few things have been very successful, it’s good to get a child’s perspective on things as ultimately we do design for children to wear our clothes. My daughter Siena absolutely loves La Coqueta because she is very much into dresses… she asked me if I could do dresses for older girls when she grows out of them. My boys are not too fussed! Their only request is to wear Adidas Gazelles or Stan Smiths with the clothes and they look really cool. I think there has been enough variety in the range to please all of my children (poloshirts for Lucas, smart cardigans for Bosco, Maoneck single-coloured shirts and braces for

Hugo, pretty dresses for Siena and delicate looking shirts for Flavia to match with jeans!). My children are involved in the business in the way that they have always been my inspiration and they used to be my models in our shoots a few times a year. Mothers related for years via our Instagram feed to the way I dressed my children and often sought advice based on pictures they saw. My husband has very little to do with fashion and travels quite a lot for his own work so we never talk about La Coqueta… we reserve two hours a month to discuss his work or mine otherwise it would be quite absorbing and monothematic. I am lucky to work with a fabulous team with who I can talk about the business and bounce ideas with endlessly. Q And finally, the best thing about having a London-centric brand? A That you are a little part of what is one of the capitals of fashion. The reach is huge and we are able to get to a very global customer by just being in London. lacoquetakids.com Januar y 2020  |  33

“When Seb arrived I felt like I had lost myself, with the birth of a baby comes the birth of a mother”

real mum talk...

Telling it Like it is Alexandra Hunter on giving yourself some ‘me time’

F

orever etched in my memory is a day when Seb was about six weeks old. My only ambition for that day was to remove the nail varnish from my toes and hang the laundry out to dry. I failed to do either and I have never felt less like myself than I did that evening. Exhausted, unshowered and hormonal I could not seem to find any semblance of the powerful, energetic woman I had been before Seb was born. When Seb arrived I felt like I had lost myself, with the birth of a baby comes the birth of a mother and I hadn’t thought about it in those terms before, I don’t think it’s possible to even imagine how

consuming and exhausting a tiny person can be. Everything that had once defined me seemed to have vanished; I couldn’t concentrate on reading a novel for six months, my clothes didn’t fit, I couldn’t nip out for a coffee with a friend or hop on a train for an impromptu weekend away, I couldn’t drive for six weeks, I couldn’t eat a hot meal or sleep uninterrupted. It’s the same for all new mamas. Of course all of these things are minor compared to the joy of having my little baby but looking back I wish I had done things a little differently. As many of my wonderful friends are having their second babies I am reminded of how all consuming the first six months are and how selfless and incredible mothers are. You

literally have to give yourself up and over to another, entirely. For me being that selfless was detrimental to my well being. Hindsight is of course a wonderful thing but so is the voice of someone who has already gone through what you’re going through. I dislike New Year’s resolutions. January has always struck me as one of the hardest months, why give up the things you love in the depths of winter? Unnecessary torture. Instead make some choices that will impact positively on your parenting and your mental health. Allow time for you, just you. Not date night but you time. Post baby you’ll never be the person you once were, your priorities will have changed and your capacity to love will have grown exponentially, but it’s vital you give yourself time to indulge in you. It’s not selfish, and it doesn’t make you a bad mother, I stupidly told myself it was. My wonderful friend Jane sent me packing to the swimming pool, without Seb, a few months in and that freedom was glorious. So was the time I went to the local pub on my own with a newspaper and drank an Aperol slowly in the evening sun. I wish I had done it more often. So as a new year begins make it your goal to have a few hours to be you again every single week, not at home (unless everyone else is removed) but out of the house. They’ll be fine and you’ll be so much happier for it. Januar y 2020

hen I think of maternity clothes, a picture of my mum heavily pregnant with my brother and wearing the most perfect pink pair of dungarees always pops into my mind. It was 1984 and dungarees were the height of maternity style. Our own mothers (and grandmothers) actually got so much right when it came to the art of dressing the bump. They chose fluid shapes – that were neither attention seeking nor too tent-like – because they were comfy and wearable after pregnancy as well. Two mamas inspired by vintage maternity style were Edwina Gieve and Johanna Kociejowski. After meeting at an antenatal class in Hackney back in 2011, they launched Clary & Peg – a brand that heavily features dungarees, as well as flowing smock dresses, practical pinafores and a boilersuit or two. But it’s not only the shapes that they’ve borrowed from the past – it’s also the attention to detailing. Every piece is breastfeeding friendly, so it will last well beyond the nine months. And who knows, maybe long enough to be passed down to the next generation of dungarees wearers too. claryandpeg.co.uk

ith their super-soft fabrics, minimal styling and a socially-conscious approach, MORI became a success almost overnight when they launched online back in 2015. And now the baby essentials brand is taking on the high street with its first standalone store on Battersea’s Northcote Road. A popular area with young families, it was important to the brand to create a space where parents could meet, connect and relax. A sort of half shopping destination and half community hub, if you will. The store itself has a dreamy feel – all curved edges, soft lighting and muted pastel paint tones – with a clever divide between the sleepwear and daywear collections. But it’s the thoughtful touches that really make it worth a visit. A giant abacus built into the furniture will occupy toddlers whilst you browse, and there’s a comfy sofa area where you can feed a hungry baby. But best-of-all there’s a snug, where the brand will be holding useful talks and events for parents and parents-to-be. They’ve already hosted Zoe Blaskey from Motherkind, and it’s definitely worth checking out their schedule for the new year. babymori.com

Every day is

S AT U R DAY

Easy family recipes for every day of the week from Sarah Copeland’s new book

CHOCOLATE CHIP BuckwheatBanana-Pancakes Serves 2-4 (makes 6 small pancakes)

Preparation: 5 mins Total time: 20 mins

INGREDIENTS • 1 ripe banana • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • 180ml whole milk or almond milk • 70g buckwheat flour • 50g quick-cooking or plain rolled oats (not thick) • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tbsp sugar • ½ tsp fine sea salt • Unsalted butter or coconut oil • About 80g bittersweet chocolate chips • Honey, pure maple syrup, or powdered sugar, for serving

DIRECTIONS 1 Smash the banana with a fork into a smooth pulp (don’t be tempted to add the other wet ingredients before this is done). 2 Add the vanilla and milk and mash together. 3 In a separate bowl, whisk together the buckwheat flour, oats, baking powder, sugar, and salt. 4 Add the wet to the dry ingredients and stir gently, being careful not to overmix; you want to keep these pancakes light and airy. Too much stirring will make them gummy and dense. 5 Heat a cast-iron griddle or skillet over medium heat until evenly warm. 6 Add a bit of butter to coat the surface. 7 When the butter sizzles, drop 60ml of batter onto the skillet in batches, leaving 2 inches (5cm) between the pancakes. (Don’t make your pancakes big; they are tender because there’s no egg to bind the batter). 8 Cook until just starting to bubble around the edges. 9 Dot the pancakes with chocolate chips, then flip (they

should release easily from the griddle). 10 Cook on the second side until just done, usually a minute or two (if the pancake stays on the heat too long, the chocolate will scorch), turning the heat to low if needed. 11 Repeat until all the batter is used. Serve warm with butter and honey.

GET AHEAD Combine all the wet ingredients, and all the dry ingredients, and store separately in the refrigerator overnight. Stir the wet and dry together in the morning while you preheat the griddle.

DOUBLE UP I always make two batches of these, but they are most tender when I mix up one batch at a time, start cooking them, then repeat, so I’ve given you a single batch here.

B U C K W H E AT F L O U R Chances are your regular grocery store will only carry one kind of buckwheat flour, and whatever kind you get will work, but flours from different brands yield slightly different results. If your buckwheat flour seems coarse, and flecked with dark grey bits, you’ll get slightly darker pancakes (it’s what I used for the photo, and what I prefer). Buckwheat flour can also be labelled light, which is finer, a subtle grey colour, and yields a more delicate pancake. It can also lend an odd greenish hue, but they still taste delicious. My family never complains.

WHITE RISOTTO

with Corn, Carrots, and Kale Serves 4

Preparation: 15 mins Total time: 1 hour

INGREDIENTS • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for cooking vegetables

• 1 onion, finely chopped • 400g Arborio rice • 160ml dry white wine • 5 to 5½ cups (1.2 to 1.3L) chicken broth or water, warm • Fine sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 56g unsalted butter • 1 bunch young heirloom carrots (about 6), trimmed and scrubbed, halved lengthwise • ½ bunch (45g) Tuscan kale, larger leaves torn or cut into pieces • 2 ears corn, kernels cut from the cob • ½ cup (15g) grated Parmesan cheese, plus more coarsely grated for garnish

DIRECTIONS 1 Heat the oil in a heavy saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. 2 Add the onion and cook, stirring, until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. 3 Add the rice and stir to coat with the oil. Stir in the wine and cook until the wine has evaporated, 1 minute more. 4 Stir in 2 cups (480ml) of the warm broth and salt and pepper to taste, and bring to a boil. 5 Stir, reduce the heat to medium-low, and

cook until the liquid has evaporated. 6 Add ½ cup (120ml) of the broth and continue stirring, adding more broth ½ cup (120ml) at a time, until the liquid has evaporated and the rice is al dente, 20 to 25 minutes. Most of the liquid should be absorbed and the rice just cooked, with about ½ cup (120ml) broth remaining. 7 While the rice cooks, heat another 1 tablespoon oil and 1 tablespoon of the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. 8 Add the carrots and brown slightly. 9 Add enough water to come about one-third of the way up the carrots and cook until just fork tender, but still deep in colour. 10 Add the kale and stir to wilt, 5 minutes more. 11 Add the corn and cook until the kernels turn bright yellow but are still crisp, 1 minute more. 12 Season the vegetables well and use a slotted spoon to remove them from the liquid. 13 Stir in another ½ cup (120ml) broth to the risotto as needed; add the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter and the cheese and stir. 14 Stir in the vegetables, or serve the risotto in bowls topped with the warm vegetables and coarsely grated Parmesan. RECIPE S

DIRECTIONS 1 Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) with the rack in the middle. 2 Butter two 8½ by 4½ inch (21.5 by 11cm) loaf pans and coat lightly with a mixture of cocoa and flour. Tap to release any excess cocoa and flour. 3 Place 170g of the chocolate (a little more than half) in a heatproof bowl. 4 Bring the buttermilk to a simmer in a saucepan over medium heat. 5 Pour over the chocolate in the bowl and set aside until melted; whisk together until smooth and let cool to room temperature. 6 Meanwhile, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl. 7 Beat the butter and sugars together in an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on medium speed until light and fluff y, about 5 minutes, scraping down the bowl halfway through. 8 Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each one (the eggs may look slightly curdled—don’t worry, keep beating). 9 Add the flour mixture one-third at a time, alternating with the chocolate mixture, and stir gently until completely combined. Stir in the remaining 110g chopped chocolate. 10 Transfer to the prepared pans and bake the loaves on the middle rack until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out with just a few crumbs, about 1 hour. Be careful not to overbake; you want the inside to still be moist. 11 Let cool completely on a rack before unmoulding.

FIT

MAMA

Q Tell us about jennis fitness. What is it and what made you want to launch it? A Jennis is a fitness brand that is very close to my heart. It was born out of my personal journey through my two very different pregnancies – despite being an elite athlete I faced all the same dilemmas that other women face – will exercising hurt my baby and what is safe etc? After a bit of internet browsing I turned to my physio and coach for their expertise and as a result I had two good pregnancies and came back strongly after having my babies. I had so many people ask me what advice I followed and thought by sharing what I learned I could really help other women facing the same lack of trusted information. Q Why is it so important for mamas-to-be to keep active? A Pregnancy and childbirth are very special times in a woman’s life but no one prepares you for the massive changes your body will undergo. All these changes enable you to grow an incredible little human inside you and then give birth to them. If you work to strengthen the muscles that stretch over the nine months and increase your balance you can really help yourself both in terms of comfort but also in terms of recovery after having your baby.

Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill on staying active during pregnancy and beyond and launching her new app jennis fitness

Q What are the best activities for pregnancy and what should you avoid? A Most of the exercises I have included in the Jennis app – such as circuit bases using weights and therabands – are trimester specific and aimed at increasing strength and stability. I also included some yoga and meditation as well. It is safe to run, cycle and swim – but all at a lower intensity than pre pregnancy. We would advise women to seek

wellness INTERVIEW

“I had two good pregnancies and came back strongly after having my babies” advice on the more cardio based activities as we are all different and temperature and heart rates are key concerns. Q What areas should women be focusing on to prepare for labour? A I think an overall level of fitness can really help you prepare for labour and I definitely valued the yoga breathing practices I learnt. Q With pressure on mums to ‘bounce back’ after birth, what would be your advice for after your baby arrives? A Do not feel under pressure to bounce back – I believe slow and steady is more important. For the first eight weeks after my pregnancies the most I did was pelvic floor work and rectus diastasis exercises

– I followed a step by step programme to build up the right muscles in the right order and it has definitely worked. I have to admit I was impatient with my return from my first child but my physio was super strict and I now know she was right. Q What was it like winning a gold medal just 13 months after giving birth? A It was so unexpected and is one of my greatest achievements as an athlete – the journey back after having my son was a tough one – the changes my body had gone through were with me for the whole year and I had to work really hard to strengthen muscles and tendons but all the work paid off. I still smile when I think about crossing that line in the 800m knowing I had won gold again! Q And finally, how has motherhood changed your relationship with sport and staying active? A My relationship with being active is really different now – I am no longer using my body for my job. Sport has been a massive influence in shaping the woman I am today. I take the values and discipline of sport into my day to day life but now I choose to be active as a lifestyle choice. I love the feeling of being fit and healthy and more than anything I feel being active makes me happy. I want to share not only the positive effects being active has on your body but also your mind.

Jessica Ennis-Hill has launched her new app jennis fitness which has two offerings – jennis fitness and jennis pregnancy & postnatal. Available to download on iOS and Android for £9.99 per month.

The Lanesborough Club & Spa is the first spa in the UK to offer a menu of signature treatments from the ‘Queen of Green Beauty’, Tata Harper. Tata Harper’s luxurious products are 100% natural and all-organic, designed to treat and transform without a single drop of synthetic chemicals. The Awakening & Energising Body Ritual promises to rejuvenate a tired mind and body (much needed at this time of year) with a deeply luxurious full body treatment. It begins with an aromatherapy and singing bowl ritual, and then uses a smoothing body scrub and two body masks to buff and brighten the skin. An energising massage and body balm are designed to leave the skin glowing. You can choose to have a Glow Facial or Scalp and Foot Massage as part of the treatment.

At the time I visit the spa, I am suffering with a hormonal imbalance that has caused an angry patch of dry skin on my face. Although I would have loved to have the glow facial, my therapist sensibly tells me it’s probably best not to overload my skin with oils so she suggests giving me a massage on my feet and neck to soothe my thyroid (and hopefully address any imbalances) instead. The body treatment is super relaxing and definitely helps to calm my stress levels. A few days after the treatment, my dry skin starts to clear up and the rest of my skin looks hydrated and refreshed.

After assessing your complexion, your facialist will assign you to one of +800 different ‘DermaProfiles™’ before giving you a highly targeted flash facial that promises to yield noticeable results. The facial provides a purifying process including a light AHA peel and an infusion of nutrients and actives designed to revitalise your skin. Your facialist will also contour and tone your skin using semi-precious stone and 24 Karat gold covered massage rollers, finishing the treatment with a pearl mask wrap. My facialist selects two ampoules for my skin. I don’t really have any skin complaints when I go (other than a spot brewing on my chin), so she chooses something to brighten and give my skin some extra luminosity. The facial itself is very relaxing and I do find myself drifting off as she traces the rollers across my cheekbones. I’d feared the spot lurking on my chin was going to be a bad one, but I’m relieved to find the next day it’s virtually gone. I’m definitely more glowy for a few days after and my skin seems less prone to pesky breakouts. The Haute Custom Tailored Flash Radiance Facial Duration: 45 mins. Price: £90.00 urbanretreat.co.uk

3 T H E S P E E DY HIGHLIGHTS THE DEAL

Highlights are high-maintenance. The idea that you’ll be spending several hours in the salon several times a year doesn’t seem all that bad at first, but it quickly becomes a timetabling issue. Can you fit in three hours to have your hair done this week? Not counting the time it takes to get to and from the hairdresser? Exactly. My appointments are biannual at best and that’s why my colour is so badly maintained. Hari’s new Wet-Lights is a revolutionary method, taking half as long as regular highlights and giving a softer result. So you’ll be in and out of the salon faster, and your roots won’t look as bad. What’s not to like?

3 feet, there’s a strong emphasis on cosmetic podiatry, whilst tackling any medical issues. The clinic has also just launched a range of products that contain active botanicals and natural plant extracts, which is perfect for anyone avoiding chemicals and toxins.

T H E R E S U LT

T H E R E S U LT S

Wet-lights are just that: wet. Colour is applied to washed and wet hair, which feels very strange but the idea is that less damage can occur when your hair’s cuticles are open. Application is swift and balayage-like, and it takes no more than half an hour to infuse. Hari’s King’s Road salon is busy and popular, buzzing with chat and a fine place to spend time – though not too long, because my Wet-Lights are ready so quickly. An efficient blow-dry reveals my new sunkissed locks: subtle yet glossy and fully revived. No more wasted hours – Wet-Lights are the future. Wet-Lights. Price: from £95 harissalon.com

I walk and run a lot and find that my feet do get fairly dry, so I’m no stranger to a medi pedi. The expert buffing, exfoliating and filing does make my feet look a lot prettier (so much so that I reflect it’s a shame it’s not sandal season), but what I find most impressive is the care the Podiatrist takes to address the issues caused by the way I run. He can tell that I’m right handed and lead with my right foot – just based on the way the skin has built up on my heels. I watch as like an artist he sculpts away, leaving just enough hard skin to address any problems with balance. Several weeks on and my feet still look great. I can see this getting addictive. o one ever predicted that one of the biggest British success stories of the last few years would be a brand that set out to reinvent the humble slipper. But Mahabis did just that – capturing contemporary hearts at home and abroad with their versatile, practical yet highend footwear, crafted in warming wool or breathable mesh with distinctive colour-contrasting soles. The company’s growth didn’t come without challenges – it veered into bankruptcy at one point, before being rescued by the founder of mattress-in-a-box company Simba Sleep – but its products never stopped impressing. And the kids’ range is as lovable as the adult one. Available in two shades of cosy grey wool (the classic model) and two bolder hues (the summer style), your little one will enjoy personalising their new treads by choosing the colour of their sole. The best thing, though, is the comfort: this is footwear so flexible and lightweight that they enable rather than hinder movement. So even nippers with a tendency to run barefoot will find themselves wanting a piece of the slipper action. £49 mahabis.com

H O M E F R O N T Blogger Alice in Scandiland on setting up shop Inter view HELEN BARON

“My approach has always been about finding ways to create more space”

Q What precipitated your love of Scandinavian design? A I’m not sure it was ever a conscious choice to follow a certain style, more that elements crept in through my love of natural materials, neutral tones and attention to detail with furniture. Living in Cornwall, bringing up children here – the same place I spent my childhood – we are very connected to the outside, in all elements, and this influence and appreciation for nature echoes in our home also. Q How long have you lived in your current home and, as an interiors blogger and shop owner, what was your approach to the interior decor? A I moved into our home 14 or so years ago; at the time it was my now husband’s house, which he lived in with two friends

as lodgers. In the early years I wasn’t really that interested in the décor, it very much felt like his house and his style. But as time went on I started to become an influence and now it’s pretty much all me. My approach has always been about finding ways to create the feeling of more space and less clutter. Q What was the toughest thing about renovating? Or is it mostly fun, being able to employ your expertise? A My husband does not share my need for change, if he had his own way things would probably be exactly the same as they were before I moved in. If it functions, it’s fine. I, however, am a serial changer. So I would say the hardest thing has been not having someone completely on-board. That said, it does keep me and my ideas in check, I suppose!

Q What was your vision for the children’s bedrooms? A I wanted to create spaces that could easily adapt and change as the girls get older. One of the rooms is absolutely tiny, so fitting a bed, wardrobe and shelving/ toy storage was a real challenge, but by making and customising the furniture we have managed to achieve all this in a room no bigger than 6.5ft x 5ft. For Nancy’s room I wanted to give her a place to escape to, somewhere calming, neutral and light. I’ve used certain pieces from my shop which she loves and the two full walls of pegrails means the look can be changed easily by adding or removing details.

Q What do you love most about the house? We read about it being one of nine set around a square, so the children can play out – sounds ideal! A Yes, I love that the children get to play outside with the neighbours’ children and I don’t have to be watching them every minute of the day. They experience a level of freedom that is quite often not possible these days, I wouldn’t change that for the world right now. I think the light in our home is also another thing that really makes it. It floods in all day and from the glass extension at the back we get absolutely beautiful sunset skies. Q Is your home full of Alice in Scandiland products? A Ha! Yes, I am so naughty and can’t help myself. When something new arrives, invariably at least one sneaks into my bag and comes home with me. But that’s also kind of the whole point of the shop. I only stock items I would or do already have in my home.

“When something new arrives in the shop, invariably at least one comes home with me” Q What changes have you noticed in the world of interiors? A I absolutely love that the attention is coming back around to handmade crafts and an investment in the time and skills of clever makers. The personality of an interior comes from the objects within. You don’t need many, but those you do choose should earn their place.

LUX* resorts has just unveiled new ‘Little LUX* Life’ programmes at key Indian Ocean resorts, specially tailored to the interests of 6-14 yearold creatives, daredevils, athletes and the naturally inquisitive.

This new travel specialist organises trips for families who don’t want to compromise on adventure – including those with under-5s. The first tours available include wellness, nature and culture experiences.

This Moroccan resort has one of the country’s largest, lagoon-style pools, plus a new cultural kids club that lets littles try their hands at gardening, cooking and crafts (inspired by the on-site gallery, no doubt).

arking yourself on a sunlounger for week with only the latest bestselling paperback for entertainment (with internet access so patchy that checking your work email would be impossible, of course) used to be relaxation enough. But a new breed of holiday aims to take the word ‘recharge’ to the next level. According to The Lonely Planet, ‘wellness-tourism’ is the fastest growing sector in travel, having seen a 10% rise in the last year alone. Indeed, it’s hard to scroll through Instagram these days without coming across a picture-perfect image of a yoga retreat (you know the ones where influencers sit in the lotus position by an infinity pool), but for many frazzled parents wellness getaways get bookmarked but never actually booked. Unless, of course, you have some exceptionally willing grandparents and the budget for a second family holiday. One resort on a mission to change this is the Vilalara Longevity Thalassa & Medical Spa in Porches, in the Algarve. Nestled on the cliffs of Praia das Gaivotas overlooking

the glistening Atlantic, the five-star retreat really does offer families the best of both worlds. Wellness-escape-meets-traditionalbeach-holiday, the idea is that you can put your little ones in the kids club whilst you take a stretch class, and then spend the rest of the day on the beach building sandcastles. We arrive at the resort at sunset and after checking in at the guest centre, we’re given a tour by golf buggy. We are immediately struck by the lush, landscaped gardens – even if you weren’t taking advantage of the spa facilities, it would be hard not to feel immediately relaxed here. At every turn there’s a winding path steeped in tropical flowers, follow it and you’ll find an outdoor canopy bed just waiting to be flopped on. We’re staying in the Junior Suite with a Garden View, which feels secluded and spacious. There’s a private balcony and a huge bathroom with double sinks, giant American-style bathtub and a rainfall shower. It’s plenty big enough for a travel cot, but if your little ones require a bed you can book into one of the hotel’s apartments. The decor is modern, clean and light: white with blue accents giving it a Portugese feel. After a sound night’s sleep in the very comfy bed (let’s face it, this is important on holiday), we get up bright and early as breakfast is being

delivered to our room. I am booked on a tailormade wellness programme and as part of this I will be following a healthy, low calorie meal plan. I don’t think that it’s lost on the hotel that I probably don’t want to watch the other guests scoffing down freshly baked pastel de natas at the breakfast buffet, whilst I sip a protein shake and munch on a tiny pot of nuts. Before my wellness programme can begin, I visit the hotel’s medical spa for a biophysical evaluation. I also have a consultation with the spa’s doctor, and based on my results he recommends a programme of treatments for me to follow in the next few days. His

advice is founded on advanced scientific and medical technologies for early detection, diagnosis, prevention and correction of stress and lifestyle related imbalances. The spa is within perfect striking distance of the hotel’s kids club, and you really can nip back and forth easily between the two. Named the ‘Koala Club’, there’s a space for indoor activities, an outdoor adventure playground, and a dreamy secret fairytale cottage. Kids from ages 3-12 can take part in activities from treasure hunts to face painting free of charge, and if you want to leave your baby or toddler in the creche you can pay for one-on-one supervision. The thalassotherapy centre is so well renowned that it has been voted in the top five in the world by Condé Nast Traveller. I start each day with classes such as stretching, fitball and pilates before undertaking my treatment plan. The doctor has prescribed a ‘slimming express’ seaweed wrap to eliminate toxins, a medical pressotherapy treatment to help with lymphatic drainage, and a dip in the thalassotherapy pool, where jets drawn straight from the

Atlantic exfoliate and ‘sculpt’ my body. My husband takes himself off to the gym whilst I’m busy with these activities and it’s actually nice to have the option to do our own thing. However, for 2020, the spa plans to launch a family wellness programme, so you will be able to take your little ones along too. Our afternoons are spent lounging by one of the hotel’s five outdoor pools, in the sauna or steam room, or on the beach. Portugal doesn’t have private beaches, but Vilalara Longevity Thalassa & Medical Spa overlooks a perfect quiet sandy cove that you can only get to through the hotel. It has a section of private sun loungers, complete with coconut umbrellas, and attended to by waiters ready to bring you fresh towels and drinks from the bar. Dinner is served each evening overlooking one of the pools and out across the sea. With waves lapping in the distance, the atmosphere is romantic and even though I’m on a low calorie meal plan, I don’t feel like I’m being deprived at all. As you would expect with a five-star resort, the service is absolutely faultless and the same friendly waiter serves us each evening remembering my husband’s favourite wine and my order of gluten free bread. By the end of the trip, I’ve actually lost a few pounds and I feel refreshed. I haven’t quite achieved influencer yogi-status, but there’s no denying that I feel better than if I’d spent a week on a sunlounger... predictable paperback in one hand, glass of cheap plonk in the other.

WILD

Laura Bingham on why she and her husband Ed Stafford took their 20 month old son to live on an uninhabited island in Indonesia for one month

I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G

Q You and Ed are adventurers, but what made you want to take your family ‘off-grid’? A When we first had our son, everyone was telling us that we had to buy this product and that teething ring and we started to wonder if there was a simpler way of parenting and if we were over complicating and over parenting things. We went off grid as a family experiment to see if we thrived or crumbled without our phones and all those baby necessities. Q What were the most positive things that came out of being away from modern society? A Ran’s development by far, he just blossomed with the amount of attention we were giving him. At home I’m always trying to multitask but on the island the job for either Ed or myself was to play with Ran. One person would go and get food/water/firewood/scout the island and the other person would watch him. But the best way to ensure Ran was 100% safe was to be fully engaged with him playing and he thrived so well.

Q What did you struggle without? And what did you miss the most? A Ed and I realised that we were slowly becoming collectively lonely, we originally thought that having the two people you love most in the world next to you would be enough but we realised that we missed having family and friends around. It was those moments that Ed would be back at camp with Ran and I’d be collecting wood or scouting that I really wished I had someone to come with me, so that the job would be easier and we would be able to laugh and joke. It became very obvious why we are supposed to live in small communities. I also missed the comfort of my bed! And Ran’s cot, putting a child to bed on the floor is so hard because Ran knew he could just get up and run off! So the last half an hour of the day would be trying to get Ran to lay down, I had to sing stories and try to engage him on a slightly calmer level so he wouldn’t escape. Q Travel with children can be so tough. Do you think the positives outweigh the negatives? A 100%! I think travel is hard for the parents

“I think it’s important to show our children we live in the world and not just in a house”

but it’s a necessity for a child. I don’t think we need to take our children to the depths of Africa or the Amazon but I do think it’s crucial we take them camping and walking up mountains and swimming in lakes. Travel doesn’t have to be expensive but I think it’s important to show children that we live in the world and not just in a house. With travel and having time close to nature, they will develop a relationship with it and realise its importance. It also creates a much MUCH nicer child, my son after camping or spending weeks in nature, is a wonderful child to be around! 30 minutes in front of the TV and I swear he is possessed by the devil! Q Where there any hairy situations? A Like I said previously, the way to ensure Ran was safe was simply to play with him, if I was playing with him, I knew what he was doing and what was going on around him. It was extremely liberating knowing that I didn’t have to do 10 things at once, I just had to make sure Ran was safe.

Q What were the biggest differences you noticed in Ran and your family dynamic? A I found it very interesting how little Ed and I disagreed. Before we left we tried putting up a greenhouse and had a tiff ! I thought jeez, if we can’t put up a greenhouse then how on earth are we going to survive on an island?! But what I didn’t realise is that if Ed and I had an argument, we couldn’t storm off on the island like we can at home. We had to get on for Ran’s safety and for our survival, arguments were a luxury we couldn’t afford. We each had our tasks to do in the day and perhaps because the situation was quite stressful, I felt we had greater compassion towards one another and great appreciation for all the effort that went into every daily task. With Ran, I think it really helped me to understand what he needed from me. Our bond was already root-deep but it stripped back all the products and technology to show me that really all he needs is his parents’ love, attention and support. Children are incredibly resilient and adaptable creatures – when we arrived on the island Ran loved crackers and wasn’t fond of coconut, he asked for crackers once and I replied with “Sorry my love, there aren’t any crackers here”, and he never asked for them again because he knew there was no point, there

INTERVIEW

weren’t any. He then ate coconut like it was his favourite ever food because that’s what we had. He ate crabs, snails, conch, bore, whatever we put in front of him because that’s what we were eating. I knew he was resilient and capable but this was just proof of how resilient and capable children are. Q What are things like now that you have returned? A He’s in the garden more and I really try to block out parts of my day that are purely play time outside of groups. We try to have ‘no phone’ Sundays. Q And finally, tell us about your new children’s books? A My new children’s books are about real adventures by real people made digestible for 4-8 year olds. I hope to follow the adventures of four or five different living adventurers so that children can read the book and then meet the people so that they know these adventures are truly possible and done by people who are alive today. ‘Mountains of Dreams’ is the first book of a five part series based on my cycling adventure through South America and it focuses on the events in Ecuador. The second book is called ‘A Jungle of Worries’ and was released in October. My intention is to inspire children to follow more wholesome ways to generate self-validation with adventure than with make-up and clothes. etting to grips with feeding a newborn can be a struggle. It can also be expensive. If you’re like me and you want baby to take the odd bottle every now and again, you can find yourself going through all kinds of bottles, pumps and other bits and bobs to make the process work. That’s why the Pumpd Breast Pump is a nice addition, and cost effective at under £20. The food grade silicone pump is designed to work with your natural let down, once you find your rhythm (mine was a few vigorous squeezes at the beginning, then slower and harder) it naturally allows you to pump out milk which can then be poured into whatever bottle your baby likes. It comes with a

handy lid, and is also squishy meaning it fits into small spaces. We recently went away and it was handy to pack as a kind of ‘travel pump’. I often find I get blockages and have to really be careful to switch breasts, meaning I’m also often pumping for comfort rather than milk collection, and this handy pump was perfect for keeping on top of that process. The pump also comes with a hand sanitizer to keep things sterile (which was actually brilliant for using on my 4 year old as well!).  £15.99 neweditionnz.co.uk

hen bringing home a newborn from the hospital, most parents will want to make sure the car seat they choose has been tested to the highest specifications. The Nuna NORR is the first 360 degree spin model that has passed the Swedish PLUS test (the most rigorous testing for car seat safety) which is why it went straight to the top of our wishlist when we were shopping for our second-born. We also liked that the seat can be swivelled so your baby is rearward facing, as experts say that the strain on your little one’s neck in the event of an impact is reduced significantly. The 360 rotation is also really handy for getting your baby in and out, especially when they are brand new. It was my job to install the seat in our car and with ISOFIX anchors it was really simple. The swivel mechanism is extremely easy to operate and the head support can be used with one hand (a really handy feature, especially when you have a toddler running around as well!). There’s seven different positions, so you can make sure your baby is really cosy and comfortable. Another reason we chose this seat is because you can use it from birth all the way up to 4 years – which definitely makes it worth the investment in our opinion.  £350, nunababy.com
