otherhood isn’t easy. Though it can be uniquely fulfilling and packed with frequent heart-bursting joys, it’s not without its equal share of boredom, lacerating self-doubt and sheer physical exhaustion. But mums-to-be and new mums shouldn’t be put off: while nothing can truly prepare you for the job, it helps to remember that you don’t have to enjoy being a parent all of the time. There will be times when you don’t like it. And that’s okay. In this month’s issue, columnist Alexandra Hunter talks about the “birth” of a new mama – and speaks honestly about her own transition to motherhood, which (as for most of us) was not as smooth as planned. Elsewhere, Candice Brathwaite highlights the challenges faced by mothers not represented in the media; in seeking to start a conversation about the diversity of the motherhood experience, she’s doing her bit to redress the imbalance. And Anna Whitehouse (aka Mother Pukka) talks to us about a new initiative, which provides support to those laid low by colic. A problem shared is a problem halved, they say. So share, then share again. Our trials as mothers aren’t anything to be ashamed of, after all: they’re the price of love. Enjoy the issue.

Q&A
INSTA MAMA Candice Brathwaite on making motherhood diverse @candicebrathwaite @makemotherhooddiverse
Q Tell us about Make Motherhood Diverse – what’s your ultimate goal with it? A My ultimate goal is for the MMD platform to go beyond me and anything I’ve ever envisioned. I started MMD with the idea that the platform is for every kind of mother and it would be very shortsighted of me to want to captain that ship forever. I know my co-founder Nicola Washington feels the same. The end goal may be a book, a permanent partnership with a larger brand and definitely a charity where we could perhaps put financial resources into making mothers’ lives easier. Q What do you see as Instagram’s main strength? How do you believe it drives change? A The main strength of Instagram is its ability to help build communities around
~ “I STARTED
‘MAKE MOTHERHOOD DIVERSE’ WITH THE IDEA THAT THE PLATFORM IS FOR EVERY KIND OF MOTHER ”
ideas and causes. The power is now back in the hands of the people. Large conglomerates and the main ways of advertising no longer appeal. Now it’s our time. Many mothers are able to make money while staying at home. This is a massive advantage. It means that the process of selling is more authentic and brands who advertise are able to connect directly with their chosen audience.
Q What do you see as its downsides? A Instagram can really make people feel like they need to compare their lives to others. What you see on the ’gram is a tiny snapshot of someone’s day. But it’s so easy to feel less than perfect when you’re up at 3am with engorged boobs, so I get it. Q And how do you see the future of the platform? A To be honest, I can’t see it! I think that’s how big their vision is. Facebook and Instagram are at the forefront of change when it comes to social media. And who knows what they’re working on next?
~
Q You’re working on a book! How exciting... How does it tie in with what you do on Instagram? How have you found the writing process? A It ties in with my Instagram because I use Instagram to talk about my life as a young black woman trying to break down a ton of barriers. A lot of my captions are actually pluckings from things I’ve already written and my audience really connect with it when I express myself in that manner. To be honest, the writing process is gruelling. It’s a very personal piece of work, so I’m having to go back and dredge up feelings I worked really hard to suppress. But I have no doubt that it will help a lot of women, so it will be worth it. October 201 8

woman in
WORK Louise Goulden on how intergenerational activities are combating loneliness Q Tell us about your vision for The Together Project and how it came about? A The Together Project is all about creating joy between the generations. Younger and older people often don’t get the chance to mix in social settings these days, and that has a real impact. It leads to loneliness, isolation, mistrust, ageism and a sense of many older people being “shut away”, which deprives the rest of us of their experience and wisdom. The vision is a range of intergenerational activities that bring different parts of our communities together. The first one we’ve launched is Songs & Smiles – music, fun and friendship for little ones, their grown-ups and care home residents. It’s a weekly group that aims to put a smile on everyone’s faces while being enriching for both the children and the older people, many of whom have dementia.

Q How hard is it to roll something like this out? What kind of experience did you bring to the project? A My experience of the non-profit sector comes entirely from my volunteer experience over the years, but my professional background is in marketing, which has been really valuable in terms of establishing the project and helping it grow. I quit my job to launch The Together Project, which was quite daunting but also very exhilarating! There’s been lots to learn along the way, so I’ve made it a priority to surround myself with experts in the field to make our work as valuable and impactful as it possibly can be. Recruiting volunteers is one of the biggest challenges, but as word is spreading we’re getting more and more enquiries, which is fantastic. Q What impact is the project having? A I’ve had some wonderful testimonials from care home staff about the impact on residents, especially those with dementia – everything in terms of improved verbal and motor skills through to just having “something to look forward to”. Many of the residents have told me it’s the highlight of their week, and I’ve had some particularly moving feedback from residents’ family members about the change they’ve seen in their loved ones since we started coming. I also love hearing from the parents, particularly those with toddlers and preschoolers who’ve noticed how, over the weeks, they’ve gone from being a bit shy or nervous to happy and excited about going to see the “grandmas and granddads”, as one little girl calls them! Q Are there plans to make the service available in more places? A Yes, absolutely. Over the coming months we’ll be launching new Songs & Smiles groups in north east London, where we started out, and at a number of locations across England, starting in Surrey. Anyone who wants to find out more can sign up to our newsletter on our website or follow us on social media through facebook.com/togetherproj.

IN THE STUDIO Textiles designer Juliet Travers on taking her artistic talents solo
Q How did you start the business? What’s your background? A I studied printed textiles at Edinburgh College of Art and Drawing, and painting has always been a passion. My first job was with de Gournay, which is at the highest end of the wallpaper world, so I really threw myself into the industry at the deep end! I gained such valuable experience in sales and customer service with both their UK and international clients and I really noticed a trend in clients always asking for animals. Customers loved the hand-painted quality of de Gournay’s collections. This was really the catalyst for me going solo and triggered a whole whirlwind of ideas. I made the leap to leave my job as showroom manager and

~
Q How do you approach “being creative”? A Anyone who runs their own business will tell you that often the reason they set up in the first place ends up being what they don’t get much time to do! I adore drawing. When I design a new collection, I block off eight weeks solely to draw, paint and develop the patterns and colours. I am constantly collecting ideas and bits of inspiration here and there, but I really like to focus entirely on my creative process when I’m ready to start on a new project. It’s difficult not to get distracted by emails or production issues, or the million and one other things that are always going on in the studio though.
began designing my first wallpaper collection, Safari, inspired by animals of East Africa. Q How did you then expand into stationery and interiors? Was this always something you wanted to do? A Wallpaper has always been something I love and it made sense to follow that with coordinating fabrics. However, we had such wonderful feedback from friends and clients who loved the designs (in particular, the level of detail in them), but for various reasons couldn’t commit to having it in their homes. We really wanted to find a way for people to enjoy the designs in their life without them being all over their walls and wanted to offer a product that was less of a commitment. So our stationery range came to life!
Q What does your working day look like? A I drop my son at nursery and then head to our office in Battersea three days a week. I’ll have a catch-up with my team for them to bring me up to speed on anything I’ve missed and we discuss next steps for any projects we’ve got on the go. We are a very small team and we work very closely together, so even if I’m not directly involved I love being kept in the loop with what’s going on. We have had a showroom open by appointment for the last three years, so often part of my day involves meeting with clients there. We are currently in the process of moving both my family and the business out of London, which is really exciting (and challenging), and I’m looking forward to getting set up in Hampshire and welcoming clients to our space there soon. juliettravers.com October 201 8

real mum talk...
The Birth of a mama
B
Alexandra Hunter opens up about the challenges of becoming a mum
eing a mother is without a doubt the best thing I have ever done; the hardest and most challenging, yes, but equally the most fulfilling and incredible. However, I had no idea of the impact a baby would have on the person I had been for the previous 33 years. Actually, I don’t think I could have imagined it even if someone had tried to explain it me – in much the same way as it’s impossible to imagine how tired a small person can make you, before you’ve experienced it. When a first child is born, a mother is born. The transition from being the
person you have always been to being a mother is an overnight (literally), dramatic and irreversible change in any woman. For the first few months I mourned my former self, and I know I’m not alone in feeling like this. I’ve talked about it with my wonderful mum friends a lot. That’s not to say I wasn’t happy, but the scale of the change was somewhat unexpected. Before you have a child you run to your own schedule – which in the main, you have adapted to work for you. You can sleep until whatever time you want, linger over meals in restaurants, pop in for a manicure on a whim or stay up stupidly late reading in bed. You can be selfish, and when you have a baby you have to become selfless. For me, that transition was tough.
The impact of having my little boy hit me on multiple levels. I didn’t know I would look five months pregnant for a long time after giving birth (I wish I’d known that) and so couldn’t wear my normal clothes. This sounds silly, perhaps, but the way you dress is part of your identity. I didn’t know that I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on a novel for about eight months after giving birth, having always been a voracious reader. I couldn’t pop out for a coffee or anywhere else easily; just getting out of the house seemed a monumental achievement. My freedom had been curtailed. I couldn’t drive post C-section and I couldn’t have that glass of wine because I was trying to breastfeed. I loved my job and I missed being good at something, knowing that at work I could fi x problems; with a tiny baby, I sometimes had no idea how to do so. There were, of course, tremendously positive changes too: the love. The love is almost too much and it just keeps coming. I didn’t know I could love so fiercely, completely and unconditionally. It took me about a year to feel any similarity to my former self. I’m not the person I was before I had Sebby and I know I never will be. I am so happy and grateful to be a mother, it’s a tremendous privilege, but adapting was hard. I felt like I’d shed a skin and was vulnerable during that transition – but I’ve developed a new, stronger one as a result. As a single mama I worked out recently that I now won’t have a lie-in until December. But I wouldn’t change that for the world. October 201 8

P E T R A’ S
P L AC E Petra Ecclestone isn’t just a famous face. She’s also a single mum-of-three who loves a good cause. And early intervention for children with autism is next on her list… W o r d s K AT Y G I L L E T T
I
n the past couple of years, Petra Ecclestone has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Her house in Chelsea was petrol bombed, she’s dealt with a nasty divorce battle, and now she’s a single, 29-year-old mum-of-three moving to live in a mega-mansion in Los Angeles. But, in the midst of all that, the daughter of 87-year-old former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has actually found time to do some good through the Petra Ecclestone Foundation, which supports children and young people affected by autism, meningitis and other related conditions. (Petra almost died of viral meningitis herself, aged just 14.) The latest project she’s working on is the opening of Petra’s Place centres across the UK, the first of which will open in October in Kensington and Chelsea. It will offer early intervention and individual programmes to children on the autistic spectrum aged 18 months to four years old. Here she tells us all about it...
34
|
Q Why is raising awareness of autism spectrum disorder so important to you? A Through other parents who are friends I learned how difficult it was to diagnose and treat children with autism. I was in the US at the time and started looking into the situation further. In America they have so many incredible therapies that we lack in the UK. I met families with children with autism and found out that the earlier you intervene the better it can be for the child. This experience inspired me to create the first early intervention autism centre in the UK. Q Day to day, what kind of involvement do you have in the Petra Ecclestone Foundation and Petra’s Place? A I’m a bit of a workaholic. I’m involved daily. Currently I’m being updated on the build, the charity’s progress, the child selection process/applications and am launching a hip T-shirt campaign created by the artist Mr Brainwash to raise awareness of Petra’s Place. I also oversee the website creation, branding and social media. I like to be abreast of everything.
Q Why do you think until now there has been little provision in London for early intervention for children with autism? A Our NHS service is amazing. I use it regularly but, as we know, it’s overstretched. I’m not sure why there’s so little provision, but I’m delighted to help make the situation better. Q Why and how can early intervention help young children, in your opinion? A Early intervention is a priority because children’s minds are still very malleable, so Petra’s Place will capitalise on the potential for learning that an infant brain has. In addition, leaving a child without early intervention risks the child feeling demoralised and losing self-confidence and self-esteem. Petra’s Place will avoid these harmful side-effects of lack of support, to help children lead better lives as they grow up. Early intervention for children with autism has been around for over 40 years. At the beginning it was a strict type of behaviour therapy, but nowadays the methods are more natural, pleasant and fun for the children. Some early studies from the University of

backed by science; 3) involve the family fully in the therapeutic programme so the child continues to learn at home. We believe that, with the right support, all children with autism can learn skills that will later become the building blocks for communication, play, learning and social interactions. It seems it doesn’t always matter as much how severe the difficulties are at the beginning. Every child can make progress and learn, albeit at a different pace. If we see that a child is not making the expected progress with our first approach, we try a modified or different approach that might suit their learning needs. We don’t give up or put limits on how much progress a preschooler can make. Q What else are you working on at the moment? A I have three young children and am settling them into a new school, so that’s a lot!
“IN AMERICA THEY HAVE SO MANY INCREDIBLE THERAPIES THAT WE LACK IN THE UK”
~
California, Los Angeles, show that children who are supported and educated early make better progress in comparison to children who aren’t. Some recent studies suggest the benefits can continue even years after the intervention stops. Although not all experts agree how much or in what way early intervention can help, there is little doubt that it can be useful. We want to make use of this opportunity and prepare pre-schoolers for their future learning and schooling experience. Early Intervention is, in many ways, about engaging children with autism in therapeutic activities and games. This takes time, people with the right skills,
and a place where the child feels at ease and the parents feel they can trust. Q How would someone know if it might help their child? A There are different types of models, methods and therapists. Also children with autism are very different in their learning style. Families, of course, differ in their resources and the way they support their child. So it’s hard to tell how a particular intervention might work for a certain child; there are just too many factors involved. But, most scientists agree it is important to: 1) start early; 2) use an approach that’s
INTERVIEW
Q How do you find it, juggling your many responsibilities in work and with your family? A It keeps me on my toes! I go to bed very, very early.
Q What advice do you have for other busy, working, modern mamas? A Be flexible. Spend quality time with your children, make an effort to set that time aside, as they are the most important. Stay focused on a few professional things and try not to take on too much or it can be overwhelming! Q How do you keep your own kids grounded considering your fame and constant media attention, particularly during difficult times? A I’m a very private person and rarely discuss my family or give interviews unless it’s about the Foundation. They are kids like every other. At the end of the day they get as excited about an ice cream or a puppy like every other kid. I’m strict and keen on good manners. I’m not sure they’re aware they’re privileged. We try and keep things simple in my household.

ashion is having a moral moment. After decades of positioning itself somewhere above and beyond mortal concerns, suddenly it’s not enough for brands to be strong on style and heedless of every other concern. And this renewed focus on sustainability has been largely inspired by revolutionary independent brands with a genuine concern for environmental impact. One Small Shop is one such brand, and founder Katy Dent doesn’t think you should have to compromise on style in order to achieve a more sustainable way of life. From her base in (increasingly hip, we can’t help but note) Hastings, Dent sources and sells eco-friendly items from suppliers with a genuine penchant for purity. ith a focus on sustainability, Pippins Childrenswear is made by hand in Britain from re-purposed Levi’s jeans that were destined for landfill. The vintage clothes industry throws away huge volumes of denim every year, when 501s are cut off to make shorts. By reusing and recycling the hardwearing and iconic material, Pippins has created a collection of super-soft jeans and shorts that only get better with each wash. Clothing tags are made from 100% cotton T-shirt scraps and the brand doesn’t use any plastic in their packaging, aiming to produce as little waste as possible. But it’s not only Pippins’ eco credentials that we love. The collection for little ones aged six months to six years is a departure from traditional children’s denim (that so often looks like it’s been designed for mini adults). Looser fits allow kids to run around and play in comfort and clever turn-ups mean that you’ll get more than one season’s wear out of them. All of the designs are gender-neutral, too, so they can be passed down to the next generation of jeans wearers. pippinschildrenswear.com

hey say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but often we find ourselves skipping it; grabbing a banana before rushing out the door or scrambling off after a cuppa to get a move on that to-do list. But now we’ve seen these three sweet, easy-peasy breakfast recipes from Bonne Maman, the makers of some of Britain’s best-loved conserves (think gingham lids), we might have to rethink our morning schedule. What do you think?
Tear & Share Brioche Serves 10-12
Ingredients
• 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast • 25g golden caster sugar • 300g strong white-bread flour, plus extra for dusting • grated rind of 1 large orange or 2 small lemons • 1 ½ tsp sea salt • 50ml warm milk • 3 large free-range eggs, beaten, plus extra for glazing • 225g unsalted butter, cubed and very soft • 1 jar Bonne Maman conserve (370g) - choose your favourite! • 1 tbsp ground hazelnuts or flaked almonds

Directions 1 Mix the yeast, sugar flour, citrus rind and 1 tsp of salt in the bowl of an electric mixer with a dough hook. Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk and eggs. 2 Mix on a slow speed for 2 minutes, then on a medium speed for a further 3-4 minutes, until you have a soft, glossy and elastic dough. 3 Add the softened butter, a little at a time, and continue to mix for a further 4-5 minutes, scraping down the bowl from time to time to ensure that the butter is thoroughly incorporated. The dough will be very soft. 4 Tip the dough into an oiled plastic bowl, cover with oiled clingfilm and chill for 24 hours until it has firmed up. 5 On a lightly floured surface, divide the dough into 18 equal pieces, about 40g each. Working one at a time, roll each piece into a circle with a 10cm diameter. Spoon a teaspoon of conserve into the centre of each one. Bring up the sides and pinch together, then roll into a ball. 6 Place 6 of the balls in a circle, seam side down,

around a small, greased ramekin or ball of foil. Place the remaining 12 balls in an outer circle. Cover with oiled clingfilm and leave to prove for 2 hours until puffy. 7 Heat the oven to 190°C fan/170°C/gas mark 5. Once the dough has puffed up, brush with a little egg, sprinkle with the remaining salt and nuts, then bake for about 20 minutes, until golden. Cover with foil and continue cooking for a further 10-15 minutes. 8 Serve warm with your favourite Bonne Maman conserve in the centre of the brioche for dipping. Cook’s tips: The cooked brioche can be frozen. To use later, wrap the frozen brioche in foil and reheat in a hot oven for about 12-20 minutes.
Apricot & Passion Fruit Parfait
Breakfast Compote Lollies
Serves 8 Serves 6
Ingredients
• 2 jars Bonne Maman apricot compote (380g) • 4 ripe passion fruit • 1 tbsp caster sugar • 6 tbsp fatfree, thick-set natural yoghurt
Directions 1 Spoon the compote into a deep freezer-proof container. Scoop the passion fruit pulp into a sieve and squash it through with a wooden spoon to extract all the juice. Discard the seeds. 2 Stir in the sugar and yoghurt until smooth and creamy. Cover and freeze for 3-4 hours, until solid. 3 Scrape the frozen mixture with a fork to break up the ice crystals. Return to the freezer until ready to serve. 4 Spoon into tall chilled glasses or deep glass dishes and serve immediately.
BONNE MAMAN – BREAKFAST SAVOIR-FAIRE
£9.99; amazon.co.uk
Ingredients
• 60g toasted granola • 2 tbsp Bonne Maman salted caramel • 300g fat-free, thick-set natural yoghurt • 200g Bonne Maman cherry, apricot or rhubarb compote
Directions 1 In a small bowl, mix the granola with the caramel and stir well to combine. 2 Spoon the mixture into the bottom of 6 ice-lolly moulds and press down firmly with the handle of a wooden spoon. 3 Add alternative dollops of yoghurt and compote. Insert a lolly stick into each and freeze overnight until firm.
Cook’s tips: For a dairy-free alternative, purée the compote with a little fresh orange juice and make compote-only lollies. If you don’t have custom-made lolly moulds, then small freezerproof containers will do the job. Just pop a lolly stick into the mix and freeze in the same way as with proper moulds. When you take them out of the freezer, run the outside of the container under hot water to release the lolly. October 201 8

COLIC Absolutely Mama meets Anna Whitehouse – AKA Mother Pukka – to chat about colic, campaigns and getting her first-ever gig on the radio

t’s 3am and Mae, Anna Whitehouse’s first-born, is crying relentlessly. Anna – who is better known as parenting blogger and campaigner, Mother Pukka – can’t stop crying either. “I felt like she was broken; I was broken,” she admits. That’s the night she realised she was dealing with more than just a crying baby. She was right. Mae actually had intense colic and would cry for up to 90 minutes at a time. “I felt alone, isolated and I was mentally exhausted,” Anna describes. “I thought I was a rubbish mother if I couldn’t fix the issue, and that made me feel incredibly low.” These are all reasons why she teamed up with Tommee Tippee, along with practising midwife Louise Broadbridge, to co-host a Colic Clinic, a new initiative from the baby brand that aims to support parents who are experiencing colic, and to share top tips for soothing babies. Colic is one of life’s great mysteries – no one is 100% sure why some babies suffer from it and others don’t, and plenty of theories abound. But what is certain is that there’s no need to struggle through it alone. Anna got through it, and so can you. Here, she tells us how…

INTERVIEW
~
Q What made you want to get involved with the Tommee Tippee Colic Clinics? A I want to help people who happen to be parents. I remember clearly how traumatic Mae’s colic was. If I can ease that pain for new parents by sharing my experience and helping them believe it does get easier, I will – so Colic Clinics made sense. I co-hosted the first Colic Clinic with the brand and it was so lovely to be able to help other mums by sharing my own experiences. Q If you could turn back time, what do you wish someone had told you about colic before experiencing it yourself? A To seek help and not battle on in silence. That while you might not be able to fix it immediately, there are small things you can do on a daily basis to ease the pain for both of you. And, even though it might feel like it, you are not alone.
“FIVE OF US WERE SAT IN A C IRC L E WITH AL L TH E K IDS C RYIN G AND WE L AU GH ED”
Q What have you found to be the most useful trick? A I was told movement helps, so I walked her around in the carrier a lot and became a master swaddler to support her stomach. I also booked onto a baby massage course so that we had a routine before bedtime that might soothe her pain. It was a little bit of everything in the hope that something would work. Feeding with a bottle that minimised air intake, such as Tommee Tippee’s Advanced Anti-Colic bottle, was a great help, too. Q How did you manage to lift yourself up from your lowest point when dealing with Mae’s colic? A It was at 3am one night and she had been
crying relentlessly. I remember bursting into tears and crying non-stop. I felt like “my one was broken”; I was broken. I reached out to friends at this point and booked into the doctor as I realised it was more than just a crying baby.
~
Q What advice would you give parents? Getting out of the house is important. Baby massage was the saviour for me because it meant I could talk to mums who were going through the same thing. There was a point where five of us (with colicky babies) were sat in a circle with all the kids crying and we looked into each other’s eyes and laughed instead of cried because we were most definitely not alone. TOP TIPS
INTERVIEW
PARENTS MEET UP TO LEARN MORE ABOUT COPING WITH COLIC
Midwife Louise Broadbridge, offers her best advice on how to deal with a colicky baby…
Identify the problem
If your baby is crying excessively, it’s vital you identify the issue. It may be caused by hunger rather than colic.
Check for wind
One of the key ailments that colic is often attributed to is wind. Irrelevant of how you feed your baby, if they are showing symptoms of colic, try winding them.
Playtime can be soothing
Babies like movement, so carrying your baby around in a sling or taking them for long walks in the pram can be comforting. Make sure they have plenty of time to play around and move.
Be careful not to over-stimulate
Lots of people or noises can overload your baby’s senses, which can be stressful. Create a calm environment, especially if you think your baby is distressed by colic.
Try anti-colic bottles
There are lots of bottles out there designed to reduce colic with venting systems that minimise babies’ air intake, such as the Tommee Tippee Advanced Anti-Colic bottle. Try different bottles to find the one that works for you.
Examine your diet
Following a balanced diet is key when breastfeeding. You can eat anything you want but if you think something is upsetting your baby try excluding that food to see if this helps.
Consider baby massage
Colic causes severe pain in the abdomen. Gently massaging your baby’s tummy can help relieve the pressure. Seek guidance from a professional baby masseuse before you try it.
Try anti-colic medicine
There are plenty of over-the-counter medicines that can alleviate symptoms. However, many are not licensed for use under three months so you may need to speak to your GP prior to giving them to your baby.
Speak to your health visitor
Colic does improve over time. However, if symptoms persist ask your health visitor for advice or consult your GP if nothing seems to be working and you’re struggling to cope. letstalkbirthandbaby.co.uk

Q There are many great campaigns surrounding parenting to get behind. What other causes are close to your heart? A Other than our Flex Appeal campaign – that pushes for flexible working for one and all – I also speak openly about miscarriage. How it may “be common” and how “one in four women will suffer from miscarriage”, but how that doesn’t mean you can’t grieve for a human; a human you may have named, a human you may have dreamed about; a person. If you know what it is to love someone then you know what it is to lose someone and I will never forget the clinical way my losses were dealt with: “The foetus should pass within a week so you need to just go home and wait.” We need more support around baby loss, we need more understanding around the extreme anxiety it ignites when pregnant again. We need to talk and that’s something @tommys_thebabycharity is doing so brilliantly. Please reach out to them if you are unsure which way to turn and feel “it’s common” does not even begin to fill that gaping hole of grief.
ANTI-COLIC BOTTLES ARE DESIGNED TO REDUCE SYMPTOMS
Q You recently achieved a life-long dream of getting a gig in radio broadcast. How’s it going so far? I never imagined being 37 and getting the job I always wanted. I remember giving up on being a radio presenter around 27, thinking I was too old. You are never too old. Parents should tune in if they are hoping to laugh more than they are crying on those 1am feeding sessions with an eye twitch. Q What else are you working on at the moment? The focus at the moment is on our Flex Appeal campaign. We are looking to roll out our free “Soft Play, Hard Talk” events across the UK to get parents offline and into real life to discuss the issues preventing them from being able to work. It’s about face time and tackling issues head on with others in the same, often leaky, boat. motherpukka.co.uk October 201 8

Real Mum Talk
Magic Moments
One in four pregnancies will end in loss. Nicola Gaskin shares her own experience in an extract from her new book, Life After Baby Loss
I
f anyone wonders why I still talk about my son, my question to them is, “When do you plan to stop talking about your children?” Living or not, no matter how brief their life, your baby remains part of your life forever. You can always be kind to yourself, safe in the knowledge that feeling as though you are stuck in the moments with your baby is okay – it’s normal, it’s natural. It is no different from holding on to the memory of a family celebration or a fond childhood moment. Revisiting that memory over and over is our way of keeping it fresh. Your mind is so powerful, so much of your baby’s life exists only within your own memory, within a little glass box that is equal parts fragile and
Wo r d s N I C O L A G A S K I N
sturdy. Your memory is your most precious keepsake. There are many instances within the world of baby loss where the bereaved are kept at such arm’s length that they are left feeling as though their loss is contagious. There are so many stories of old friends crossing the road to avoid an awkward conversation, or simply failing to call or text. We can be left feeling as though people wouldn’t want to spend time with us simply due to our loss, as though we are a black cloud or that our “bad luck” will rub off onto them. It’s important to remember that you are in charge of your own thoughts and actions, but not of others’. At a time when we are left so desolate in the aftermath of baby loss, relieve yourself of the pressures of others’ actions and
expectations. Seek out those who understand and make effort to alleviate your pain. Keep the better experiences at the forefront of your mind and use bad experiences as motivation to gently educate and change the unrealistic expectations of baby loss. Hold close those who reach out, those who try. Perhaps their words may not always be the comfort you were hoping for, but when heartfelt effort is made, we can dismiss the delivery and focus on the intention. You may begin to develop some rituals and find new connections to your baby. Maybe a bird, a symbol, a colour or a flower that brings you close to them. Snowflakes and wolves remind me of my son Winter, and coconuts remind me of a baby I miscarried. It can be as obscure as you want, and no doubt there will be something you have in mind already. Sharing this image with loved ones and saying “this is how I remember my baby” gives them an opportunity to join in your remembrance. When they see that plant or animal or letter or fruit, your baby will be projected to the forefront of their mind. If you are happily willing, they may share those moments with you, and you will be reminded that your baby lives on in the memory of others too. ittles love building things, but let’s face it: some modern kids are easily bored by generic blocks (however lovely those blocks may appear to adult eyes). We’re therefore glad that we stumbled upon Stories in Structures, a brand focused on producing creative toys with a little more depth and detail – not to mention a handy dual-purpose nature. Stories in Structures’ signature products are 3D puzzles in the form of little wooden buildings. Interlocking pieces cut and crafted from the fi nest birch veneer (and made more resilient with a coating of natural walnut oil or non-toxic paint) can be combined and recombined in any number of configurations, with the window cutouts and carefully considered forms integral to each piece, ensuring that they never lose their architectural air. They’re equal part open-ended jigsaw and directional building block, and work brilliantly as a game in themselves or as the backdrop to wider play. Also in the range are wooden puzzles with pieces that double as toy cars, sculptural layered dioramas of ballet dancers and famous cityscapes, and some truly striking limited-edition artworks cut into real wood – the latter intended for the walls of your home rather than your little ones’ toy chest. NEUTRAL TONES ARE ENLIVENED WITH HOUSEPLANTS
Q You have created a beautiful family home with your husband, Tom. Tell us about it and how you chose it. A We moved into our house 12 years ago when we were only 21 years old. We’d bought a show house, which was great for us at the time as it meant we could just put our clothes in the wardrobe and pop the kettle on. It was hassle-free and looked stunning. But as time went on we realised it wasn’t really very “us”. It didn’t show off our personalities or interests. It wasn’t particularly practical either in terms of storage. About two years ago we decided to make some upgrades and I’m so glad we did. The house is now a collection of the things we love. It’s also colourful, warm, inviting, cosy, inspiring and calming, depending on where we are in the house. Q Did you have to re-decorate when you moved in? If so, where did you start and what was your inspiration? A We kept the house exactly as it was for the first few years. Then we eventually painted the guest room as we were turning that into Tom’s music room and then painted the cinema room to give it a little more depth. I’ll be completely honest, we really just painted the walls and we moved furniture around. It wasn’t particularly creative of us!

“HAVING CHILDREN FORCED US TO LOOK AT OUR HOME DIFFERENTLY”
~
GIOVANNA FLETCHER IN HER REDESIGNED NURSERY
Q Did your home design change when you became parents? A Having children forced us to look at our home differently. Firstly, we realised that children take over. There’s not a single room that doesn’t contain some sort of child-related item. Before we became parents, we did a first aid course that led us to do an extensive “risk assessment” in the house, which completely freaked us out and made us view everything as a potential threat. The glass went. Any sharp corners were frowned upon. Stair gates went in. Locks were fitted on locks. But since we’ve really redecorated we’ve been able to have more fun with the space. Growing up I can remember being told off about doing anything that might damage the carpet,
sofas or breakables. The boys still have to be careful, of course, but I’d say our style has become more family-friendly. I want our home to feel like people live there. Q How would you describe your interior style? What’s most important to you when decorating a room? A I like a room to reflect some personality while being inviting and cosy. I also want it to be practical. I’m not one for useless faff. Q Baby number three will be arriving soon – what was the inspiration behind the new nursery? A I really wanted to freshen up the space as it’s not been October 201 8

redesigned since it became Buzz’s room four years ago and looked tired and worn. I wanted a fresh, clean space that felt homely and calming. It was also important for it to be genderneutral as we aren’t finding out the sex of the baby – although even when he or she is born we won’t be adding loads of pink or blue! Q What are your favourite items in the nursery? Why do you love them? A The jungle-themed wallpaper is stunning and adds so much to the space, while also being neutral and calming. I really love a statement design. We have flamingos in the downstairs loo, an intricate story-based design in the boys’ room and then full-on “flower power” in my office! The tipi tent is gorgeous too – such a unique but affordable touch and I can really imagine the baby lying in there and taking it all in. There are also so many 76

textures to explore with the cushions, throws and rugs, and the muted pastel shades help make it all look so beautiful. I’m also really happy with the wardrobe and changing unit. Babies come with lots of stuff – and being the third child, this baby is inheriting a fair few clothes, so it’s good to have somewhere to put it all. I love the design of both these items as they feel really unique. Q Walk us through your guest bedroom. What do you love most about the style of the space? A The guest room is an important one to us as we do tend to have people to stay quite a lot. I wanted somewhere cool, interesting, comfortable, relaxing and adult – somewhere for them to escape from the rest of the house. Even though the room is full of neutral tones, the pops of inky blues, soft blush and gleaming golds really help to make it

inviting and interesting. I love the use of texture with the tassel throw cushions and woven wall hangings. The bedside lamps are stunning too. They throw the light in such a magical way in the evening. I also love it when guests sleep really well here, so I wanted to do everything I could to ensure a good night’s sleep. I opted for a comfy upholstered bed and Wayfair’s best-selling thermo-regulated memory foam Nora mattress. My sister and her husband have already been over to test it out and loved it. Hurrah! Q Tell us who will likely be staying in the guest bedroom and making the most of it? A My sister Giorgina and her husband Chickpea come over quite a bit. They have a little girl so we like getting all the cousins together as much as possible. When the children are asleep we get to just hang out and catch up. Giorgina loves interiors and I’m always envious of her amazing eye, so I’m thrilled she has fallen in love with her new room. Q What’s next for your home? Any big renovation plans or rooms you would love to tackle next? A I think I’d like to redesign the cinema room and the bathrooms next and I’d also really like to finish off our bedroom. We painted and furnished it about a year ago, but working with Wayfair.co.uk has really shown me how vital all the statement pieces and finishing touches are and not to be scared to use different textures, colours and to layer things up.

Giovanna’s “genderneutral” nursery
Creating a soothing space that balanced lots of practical picks with the sweetest of details was a top priority for Giovanna, who also wanted to create a “neutral” space that works for either gender, as baby number three will be a surprise! We opted for a base palette of soft greys and muted pastels to create a calming environment for both mum and baby and offset this with hints of mint and egg-yolk yellow to make the scheme pop. The cot, changing table and wardrobe all boast a clean but traditional aesthetic and generous proportions, making them great options for any parent. Meanwhile, a dove grey jungle-themed wallpaper, gallery wall of cute Scandi-style illustrations and styled “shelfie” above eye level create a fun, stylish and (most importantly) baby-proof backdrop. As for all new mums, comfort was really important to Giovanna, so we also included lots of cosy touches, from the cute tipi filled with cushions and soft faux furs through to the beautifully upholstered nursing chair and footstool. We hope this will be the perfect place for all the family to enjoy some serious snuggle time!
Giovanna’s eclectic guest bedroom
A STYLED SHELF IS BOTH BABY-PROOF AND STYLISH
Giovanna’s guest bedroom offers the perfect mix of style and comfort, with a striking “mid-century modern meets bold bohemian” aesthetic. Giving friends and family a good night’s kip was a top priority for Giovanna, so we opted for a comfy upholstered bed and thermo-regulated memory foam Nora mattress. We mixed chunky layered textiles, such as tassel throw cushions and woven wall hangings, to up the style stakes and provide a cosy retreat for any guest. A slim console with an on-trend circular mirror acts as the perfect guest dresser; meanwhile, a styled “shelfie” layered with interesting illustrations, terrazzo votives and coloured glass vases creates a fashion-forward vignette.

FAVOURITE DESIGNER
FAVOURITE PIECE OF ART
David LaChapelle and Tim Walker have been long-term favourites for us both. We love how they capture the whimsical nature of our brand ethos.
WHAT INSPIRED WILD HEARTS WONDER?
There is nothing more joyful than listening to your children lost in their make-believe world. Our prints are designed to spark their imaginations, and inspire them to create their own fairy tales.
We have always loved Gucci for our clothing inspiration, and currently share the love for big cats! For our interiors collection, de Gournay have inspired us with their opulent, hand-painted designs.
YOUR WORK’S BIGGEST INSPIRATION
We aim to capture the magic of childhood in our prints. We get inspiration mainly from nature, with a dash of childhood nostalgia and a sprinkling of Roald Dahl silliness.
FAVOURITE AUTUMN ACTIVITY
We have a family cottage in Broadstairs, so visits to the beach are a must for every season. In autumn the crowds have gone and sometimes you are left with a beautiful sunset and an empty beach to yourself!

t’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed when faced with a choice of colours. That’s partly why so many of us end up with white walls. But, according to theories of colour psychology, every one of us has a palette of colours to which they are most suited, and finding it involves thinking about your personality. “If you’ve ever faced painful procrastination over a paint colour or agonised over an investment buy, then tapping into colour psychology is a real gamechanger,” says colour expert Sophie Robinson. “When it comes to finding clarity and focus in order to pull a scheme together, colour psychology gives you a fantastic framework to work to. It helps you make decisions faster and with more confidence and does away with the fear that you might not love a design once the trend has passed. Essentially, it’s a framework that enables you to combine colours, patterns, textures, furniture and artwork that work together and, more importantly, create the feel you want for the room. What I really love about this concept is it’s actually very instinctive – it gets us out of our heads and back in touch with our gut and allows us to make more emotional and bolder design choices, which I’m all for! The result is a home that resonates more deeply, and, more importantly, one you’re not going to tire of.” The concept of colour psychology was devised by the psychologist Angela Wright, who studied different personalities and their relationship with specific colours. Wright divided them into four groups – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, using the seasonal colour palettes found in nature to reflect the colour preferences and energetic styles of each personality group. The theory was taken and made into a powerful applied framework by brand stylist Fiona Humberstone and it’s this system that Sophie uses to design her own interiors. Colour psychology shifts the focus from how people want their room to look towards how they want their room to feel as a starting point. “Once you have identified which season you are or what season you want your room to feel like, the choices you make in terms of colour palette, fabrics, accessories and furniture flows much more easily. And the result is a room that feels as good as it looks.” So, turn over to find out which season you are. October 201 8

COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY Which Colour Personality Are You?
The Spring personality is full of life and youthful energy. Like the first signs of spring they are optimistic and have a very positive outlook. In terms of their home they crave lots of natural light. They favour new designs but also busy prints with lots of energy. Colours are warm but clear so they have a lightness to them. Furniture will have clean lines in pale woods or painted, and they love a little sparkle so glass and glossy surfaces are a favourite. Textures will be smooth or shiny and styling will feel modern yet welcoming. Ultimately, they are young at heart so they love anything cute. The Summer personality is graceful and elegant and more reserved in character. Take inspiration from a lazy, hazy, hot English summer’s day. They are attracted to more muted and subtle colours and patterns are painterly and flowing. Generally they love a soft, floaty and romantic style but also they love a touch of formality and enjoy symmetrical arrangements and structure. They are attracted to tradition and will look towards the past for inspiration, so love elements of patina and distress. They are inspired by nature and the overall look is understated and never showy. 82

“COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY SHIFTS THE FOCUS FROM HOW PEOPLE WANT THEIR ROOM TO LOOK TOWARDS HOW THEY WANT THEIR ROOM TO FEEL”
~
Winter personalities love drama and making strong design statements. Just as winter is generally a season of extremes, in terms of design, they love the same potency. Colours are sharp, cool and bright and they match this strength with striking patterns like geometrics. They love their homes to be a reflection of their self-assurance and are likely to choose pioneering or iconic designs. In terms of style there is a coolness and attention to detail throughout and they’re drawn to the latest tech or luxury furnishings. Minimalists would be winter people, but, on the same extreme, so would a dramatic maximalist pad.
Autumn is organic, robust, and abundant. They are passionate people with a strong connection to nature, attracted to rich colours and furniture with a substantial or textured feel. Authenticity is an important element, so they love the rustic style and anything that celebrates craftsmanship and heritage. They have a great love of art and education, so they will definitely have a library of books in their home. They want their spaces to feel welcoming, cosy and relaxed, so you’ll see collections of sentimental importance on display. October 201 8

he Languedoc might be seen to live in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, Provence, but in recent years the tide has begun to turn. More visitors are recognising the distinct advantages presented by a region with a Mediterranean summer climate, varied natural landscape and some of the most picturesque and historic sites in a country not entirely starved of such attractions. What’s more, the Languedoc is served by plenty of airports offering great-value flights from the UK, and a network of roads and autoroutes that don’t tend to get so badly congested as those of Provence. What makes La Cour itself so desirable is that it’s in the Languedoc but close to the border with Provence – enabling you to sample the best

of both worlds in a single trip. The nearest large town is Uzès, a classic circulade (a town constructed around concentric circular boulevards) atop a hill overlooking the local landscape. With a plethora of restaurants and bars, plus celebrated antiques shops and a weekly market in the leafy square, Uzès can cater to most needs not met by Bourdic, the tiny village in which La Cour is actually located (a mere fifteen minutes’ drive away). And when you don’t fancy the comparative hustle and bustle of small-town life? Enjoy easygoing walks to neighbouring villages like the lovely Garrigues Sainte-Eulalie, all sunflower fields and old stone churches.
The House
a Cour is, above all things, a surprise – and of the very best sort. From the street, it looks like any other large village house, albeit with solidly imposing double doors that hint at something special within. But as soon as you enter, the scale of the place begins to reveal itself. A courtyard garden centres on a heated swimming pool set in a beautiful stone surround.
L
Beside it, sun-loungers ring a lush lawn that leads to a cavernous, open-ended games room, complete with sandpit (our little ones were enjoying it even before our friendly hosts had finished giving us the tour), table tennis and all manner of pool toys and inflatables. Also close at hand are a laundry room – essential for families – and a pool shower. The main house encircles half the garden while the other sides are walled in by neighbouring properties. Everything is arranged in such a way that you won’t find neighbours peeking at you while you soak up some rays. The ground floor features a summer kitchen and movie room complete October 201 8

with plush seating and an overhead projector, perfect for movie nights, while there’s also a toy room stocked with plenty of goodies for under-fives. Upstairs you’ll find the family kitchen (complete with large Americanstyle island, a favourite gathering place), a huge living and dining room and a snug: this is where our dog (permitted on request) liked to curl up and ignore the noisy antics of our girls come evening. Beyond the snug lies the master bedroom, a stunning double-height space with an adjoining dressing room and mezzanine bathroom. A dorm-style bedroom on the second floor contains four single beds (great for youngsters), with two double bedrooms and two additional bathrooms along the hall. We travelled in a family group of six adults and two children and had space to spare.
The size of the property is startling, but even on the odd rainy day (we went in May, when the weather was still changeable) it’s easy to get cosy. Such versatility hints at the fact that the house is still owned by the architect who transformed it. It took over two years and a lot of ingenuity to turn what was a semi-derelict village house to the considered, comfortable luxury pad it is today. The results, however, make all the effort all worthwhile: this is a destination for those who demand something special. So many modern conveniences are tucked into
a venerable structure that still retains much of its original character, not to mention a sense of modern minimalst style. Designer furnishings sit perfectly alongside the crumbling stone and sultry, old-world romance of the firstfloor terraces, with their preserved stone balustrades and sun-dappled dining tables set under pergolas of lush foliage. It’s “Call Me By Your Name” with a contemporary twist – though one thing that does need saying is that there are quite a lot of steps for families with younger children, and no fencing around the pool. But if you can keep an eye on the little ones, it’s a perfect home-from-home for families looking for French rustic charm at its most luxurious.
Places To Visit zès aside, the local area offers tons to do. The jaw-dropping Roman aqueduct, the Pont du Gard, is within easy driving distance and is an ideal sunset excursion; it also offers plentiful (and easily accessible) opportunities for wild swimming. We also drove a couple of hours for a day trip to Provence for a visit to Chateau La Coste, a beautifully restored estate and vineyard dotted with sculptures by some of the world’s most celebrated artists. With a cute café serving the chateau’s own wine, it’s a brilliant way to spend a day.

The Castle
eeds Castle in Kent is often called the “loveliest castle in the world”. Listed in the Domesday Book, this castle has been a Norman stronghold, a royal residence and a royal palace. Its situation is stunning, set on two islands in a vast lake and surrounded by beautiful gardens. The fully furnished rooms come in either modern or Tudor style, each with outstanding attention to detail.
L
The Food
astle View Restaurant is a converted 17th century barn with a terrace. Tables can be reserved for dinner and offer unrivalled views of the castle lit at night. The menu features daily specials that showcase the head chef’s creativity and flair. The restaurant felt intimate with good-quality, simple food, well prepared and presented. Children were welcome in the evening with a full children’s menu, meaning eating out later was an option.
C
Glamping
taying overnight in this beautiful setting and strolling around the castle grounds and gardens when the estate is closed to the general public feels very relaxed. The medieval-style canvas tents are stylish and luxurious, with four-poster beds and crisp cotton bedding. Outside dining and barbecue facilities with fire pits added a little adventure for the children. A choice of breakfast delivered in a hamper meant the children were fed and ready for the day ahead. With great facilities and plenty of room, this felt a world away from a simple camping weekend.

These days there’s a buggy for every taste, purpose and occasion. We round up the best...
W o r d s H E L E N B A R O N & J E S S S H A LT O U T
Best for travelling
GB POKIT+ Prices start from £129
Best everyday stroller
JOIE SIGNATURE PACT FLEX
PROS The world’s smallest buggy, according to the Guinness Book of Records. It’s as big as a standard rucksack, passes for cabin luggage, and is easy to carry if your little one decides they want to walk. Comfortable, easy-to-clean material and stylish design. No assembling – it comes ready to use!
Price: £189
PROS Great for travel, so light when getting in and out the car, and even comes with a travel bag for taking on flights. Onehanded, easy-to-use foldaway system. Generous basket size, with the seat sitting well above so it can easily fit a changing bag and/or shopping. Can also be accessed from the front and sides. Easy to manoeuvre and good suspension, too. CON S The seat reclines so the baby almost always has to lay back; it’s very difficult for them to sit upright. Small front wheels mean it can get caught on the pavement or dips in the ground so needs a lift . Better on smoother terrain. 98
|
The hood is slightly shallow, so a significant portion of the baby’s body remains exposed when it’s down. Great all-round stroller, perfect for parents who are often in and out of the car, up and down stairs, or don’t have much space.
CON S Not ideal for shopping, with little basket space. Not much protection from the weather. The sunshade is small; equally, the frame might not feel substantial in rainy or stormy weather. No recline for a comfortable sleep position. Although there are trade-offs in order for it to be as small and light as it is, it’s great at what it does. It’s super compact and easy to use. Probably not your only buggy – but a handy extra.

ICKLE BUBBA DISCOVERY
Best double stroller
BRITAX B-AGILE DOUBLE
Price starts from £139
Price: £249
PROS Stylish and well designed – light aluminum frame with brown leatherette handles and ventilated roll-up fabrics to keep baby cool in heat. Perfect hood size with UVF 50 protection. Comes with a magnetic peephole to avoid waking the baby. Great accessories, including a lined velvet footmuff for winter days, cup holder, Velcro pouch to store purse/ phone/baby snacks, rain cover. CON S Although it’s a fairly lightweight umbrella stroller, there are far more compact foldaway options nowadays. The basket is on the small size; it doesn’t fit most changing bags. Although you could hang items from the handles. The seat recline is limited to three positions and can be a little fiddly. A stylish and light stroller that looks and feels the part. Durable and great manoeuvrability. Works well in all seasons, but lacking slightly in basket space.
Best for manoeuvrability
NUNA PEPP NEXT £250
PROS Super-compact and stylish, with amazing flat-fold design. Very lightweight chassis. Incredibly manoeuvrable – you won’t get tired of pushing this stroller!
PROS Side-by-side stroller allows tots to socialise with each other – and means one baby doesn’t have to look at the back of the other one’s seat. Compact design means it’s not much wider than a regular single stroller, so it won’t stop you getting through doorways and around shops. And the basket has a decent capacity. Folds up into a super-neat package, saving space in the car (or the hallway of your home!). CON S Still a little wider than an in-line double stroller… The Velcro fixing used to secure the window atop the canopy can be a little loud if opened when littles are asleep. Ideal double stroller that doesn’t relegate one babe to the back seat.
CON S Slightly smaller basket due to small size of stroller. A decidedly urban stroller, so not the best for off-road escapades. A super-neat stroller that’s perfect for city-dwellers; if only the basket were bigger!

Best all-terrain
MOUNTAIN BUGGY SWIFT Price starts from £139
PROS Super-neat, with a simple, compact fold and a slender design that lets you slip through openings other buggies can’t manage. Air-filled tyres enable great off-road performance and soft ride. Incredible handling – no risk of RSI with this nimble little fella. Best all-rounder
MAMAS & PAPAS ARMADILLO XT Price starts from £299 Reviewed by Danielle Lisle of the Mamas & Papas Parent Approved Panel @atthelisles
PROS One-handed fold and extremely compact design, making it easy to get in and out of the car or to store in the house. Very stylish and comfortable – it’s a buggy that will grow with your child but won’t go out of style. Large shopping basket with mesh up the sides to stop items spilling out. CON S The carry handle (for carrying when folded) might be better positioned on the side to make it easier to carry. The drinks carrier is a touch flimsy, and could do with clicking into place to make it a little more secure. A reliable, sturdy stroller with a great set of features for everyday use, both in the city and further afield. It’s robust, spacious for littles and great value for money. It also makes a style statement, and carries the guarantee of a wellestablished British brand.
CON S Great range of stylish, well-made accessories – but most cost extra. Basket isn’t overly large – though it’s not the worst for a buggy of this size and weight, and is easily accessible. The fixed-length handle may prove a tad short for taller parents. Mountain Buggy models are all about performance, and this one is no slouch. When it comes to beaches, lawns and other soft terrain, the large, air-filled tyres keep things moving smoothly. But even on city streets, the clever design, compact size and light-touch steering offer much to love. If you’re planning lots of country walks or trips to the beach, there’s no contest.
Best for style
BABYZEN YOYO+ Price starts from £369
PROS Super-lightweight but beautifully engineered – it doesn’t feel fragile. Thje original cabin-luggage buggy, with a superbly small and easy fold. As stylish as they come, with great colourways and a brilliant optional buggy board for an older child to ride. CON S For older kids, the seat doesn’t always feel spacious or upright enough. The canopy doesn’t provide a huge amount of sun cover. The basket has to be empty to fold the stroller properly – so don’t even think about leaving the rain cover (or even a newspaper) in there when you’re about to board a flight. This buggy is one of the few that can legitimately claim to have revolutionised the industry – and you can see why. Strong, brilliantly compact and lovely to look at, it’s as good an all-rounder as you could hope for from something so small and lightweight. A mini classic. October 201 8

Where is my pelvic floor? Our pelvic floor muscles stretch like a hammock from our pubic bone at the front, to our tailbone at the back, and then side to side between our sit bones. Q A
Why is it so important? Our pelvic floor has four very important roles. Firstly, it acts to support our pelvic organs (bladder, bowel, uterus). Secondly, the muscles of the pelvic floor wrap around and control the opening of your bladder and rectum. When there is an increase in abdominal pressure (for example when you cough, sneeze, laugh or jump), these muscles contract around your urethra and anus to prevent leakage. Equally as important, these muscles have to relax and lengthen to allow us to urinate or have bowel movements easily. Pelvic floor muscles are also important for sexual function (contributing to sensation and arousal), and lastly they work with your abdominal and back muscles to stabilise and support the spine. Q A

When can I run again? The earliest it is recommended to return to running after birth is 12 weeks, after you’ve done a good amount of pelvic floor exercises. However, ideally it would be left for six months for your body to fully recover and prevent weakening the pelvic floor further, which in the long run could lead to problems like prolapse, leakage and pelvic pain. If you are worried that your pelvic floor muscles may be weak, see a Women’s Health Physio, who can assess your abdominals and pelvic floor, and help you get back to 100%. Q A

Can nappy rash be prevented? No matter how careful you are, most babies are likely to get nappy rash at some time. Nappy rash is usually mild and can be managed with a good skincare routine and a barrier ointment. Taking care of your baby’s delicate skin is essential in both treating and preventing nappy rash. These simple steps will help: • Lie your baby on a towel and leave your baby’s nappy off as often as you can, to let fresh air get to the skin. Q A
T HE EXPERTS
• Change wet or soiled nappies as soon as possible. • Clean the nappy area thoroughly using plain water or alcohol- and fragrance-free wipes. • Don’t use talcum powder as it contains ingredients that could irritate your baby’s skin. • Try to bath your baby every day, but don’t use soap or bubble bath. • Gently pat rather than rub your baby’s bottom dry and avoid vigorous rubbing. • Use a suitable barrier ointment at each nappy change. Most mild cases of nappy rash can be easily treated with an ointment from your pharmacy and by following this skincare routine, but if you are worried always seek the advice of a healthcare professional.
“NAPPY RASH CAN BE MANAGED WITH A GOOD SKINCARE ROUTINE AND A BARRIER OINTMENT” Finally, it comes down to style. At Urban Iki, we’ve created a range of simple and attractive designs that can also be personalised to suit people’s own sense of creativity.
Ronald SCHEPPINK
Ronald is the Managing Director of Urban Iki and tells us about safety in cycling for kids. u rbaniki.com Q What should parents look for in a child bike seat? A As a parent, you want to focus on the experience of cycling with your child and simply have fun. The best way to focus on enjoying yourselves is to have a bike seat that you know you can trust and that is easy to use. Once parents have found a brand that they trust, they should look at what works best for them and their children. For instance, a front seat is only for children aged between nine months and three years, whereas a rear seat goes from nine months to six years – so a choice has to made there.
Q How do bike seats ensure safety when cycling with kids? A The fi rst thing a parent can do is check that the seat meets the necessary safety regulations. If it has been TUV-tested and approved, you know you’re buying a safe seat. You can choose a seat with a five-point safety seatbelt instead of a three-point. The five-point harness prevents children from wriggling out from under the seatbelt and offers that extra layer of confidence. Th is harness also allows parents to lock and adjust the seatbelt with one hand while keeping the bicycle steady with the other. If it’s easy to fit, then it will be a safe fit. Always check if the bicycle is in good shape and if it’s able to carry the extra load. In the manuals that come with our seats we give some extra safety pointers, so every bike ride can be a real adventure.

Learning
School has to be engaging to instil a true love of learning in kids, says one headmaster
C
hildren intrinsically have a curiosity and desire to explore their world. They have a need to discover what they can do, how things work and how they push the boundaries of reality. Our schooling system runs the danger of restricting children’s natural ability to learn and discover as it focuses too much on the need to retain information rather than using, questioning and applying learning. If children are not given the opportunity to develop their natural curiosity, they become passive learners
W o r d s C H R I S C A LV E Y
who accept everything they are told. They will fail to understand the potential of what they are learning. In time this will lead to a closed mind-set where children feel restricted by their cognitive ability. The “I can” attitude is suffocated and the desire to explore is lost. At Great Walstead School, we place great importance on developing a child’s positive approach to learning through our Learning Powers: Learning Lion (confidence to make mistakes), Persevering Panda (commitment and application), Curious Cat (curiosity and questioning), Respectful Rhino (collaborative learning), Creative Chameleon (creative problem-solving) and Be Better Bee (craftsmanship and taking pride).
Teachers offer their children many opportunities to develop these skills through well planned lessons. The pupils are recognised for displaying examples of the different attitudes and can gain stickers corresponding to each Learning Power. Though this approach, no child is restricted because of their cognitive ability – all have the opportunity to excel. Since focusing on the Learning Powers, we have seen children become far more engaged in their learning process, taking responsibility and, as a result, making impressive levels of academic progress where they not only know things, but genuinely understand them – there is a distinct difference. Children only get one chance at their schooling and I believe it is so important that we look to develop the whole person – not just focus on attainment and a knowledgebased curriculum. These attitudes prepare them for an ever-changing world, where an academic certificate is no longer enough to guarantee success and happiness in life. Great Walstead School has an open day on 9 October. Parents can email startdreaming@greatwalstead.co.uk if they want to attend or book a private tour. greatwalstead.co.uk

TIPS
Finding The Perfect
NANNY Sarajane Ambrose of Imperial Nannies shares with us her top interview tips
Define your job specification List your requirements, including the days and hours needed and the salary on offer. If the job is a live-in position, describe the accommodation. Generally nannies work 12 hours daily, 5 or 6 days per week. Decide if a driver is a “must”, and remember any travel you offer is a plus. What to ask at the interview Telephone as many candidates as possible to get a feel for them. I recommend asking what they liked about your position before discussing previous roles and responsibilities. Discussing a candidate’s views and experience of routine, play, food, and discipline can give insight into their knowledge and approach. Discussing your own routines can help gauge if they will be a good fit. Asking a candidate how they deal with emergencies will show how they think on their feet in unpredictable circumstances. From there, create a shortlist of six for first interviews.
How important are qualifications? While qualifications display interest and application, do consider non-qualified candidates who keep abreast of child development and educational play. Look at all candidates’ personalities. Are they motivated, warm, engaging, smiley and can they relate to your children? That said, recognised qualifications are valuable; look out for Cache Level 3 or mention of EYFS, which includes all learning and developmental milestones.
Making the offer Candidates should meet your children no earlier than second interview, under your steely but discreet eye. Take up references as soon as you have made your decision about who to employ. Check official identity, original certificates, DBS status and visas before making the offer. During the process, critically assess if the candidate is right for your family.
Being a good employer Aim to work in partnership with your nanny. Agree a plan about the children’s boundaries and rules. Keep to the contracted days and hours of work, unless you have agreed a flexible rota. Pay on time, and always respect a nanny’s time off. Do all the above and you should have a good working arrangement for all, including your children!

hink of this clever gizmo as mother’s little helper – completely self-guided, he’ll whirr quietly around your home vacuuming up dust and debris before returning himself to his port to recharge. The RoboVac’s slimline, disc-like shape allows it to glide easily under sofas, sideboards and tables, thereby reaching places your regular vacuum can’t. Emptying the collected debris is a cinch, and there’s even a remote for those who like to give more direction. That said, your RoboVac won’t take long to map your home, using clever sensors that prevent it bumping into things (or pets, or inquisitive children). As soon as it senses an obstruction, the RoboVac stops and heads off in a different direction. And while it won’t replace your manual vacuum completely, it offers one extra bonus: little ones will love it. Our RoboVac had been out of its box all of three seconds before our eldest had christened it Hoovy and announced that she wanted to stay home and help it work. All in all, a family favourite from the start – and as close to an extra pair of hands as you’ll find without enlisting Dad or Granny. £209.99; amazon.co.uk

CRACKING THE CODE
Absolutely Mama meets Elizabeth Tweedale, the founder of Cypher Wo r d s G E O RG I A M C V E I G H
Q Tell us a little bit about yourself. A I’m the founder of Cypher and we teach children to code through holiday camps. My background is in Computer Science and I have a Master’s degree in architecture. Cypher has been going for two years. I’m also a mother of two and I have another on the way.
~
Q Could you tell us what Cypher is and what it aims to do? A At Cypher, we aim to prepare children for the future through an education in technology and computer science. We believe that we are a crucial part of our students’ journey in primary school and secondary school, as all careers will include not just technology, but at least a base understanding of coding and computing. Because we incorporate creative themes – such as architecture and fashion and digital art – we cover all bases. We’re not creating a generation of computer scientists or coders, but teaching the base fundamentals everyone will have to know. Courses are a week long and take place at holiday times, so for about 14 weeks a year.
Q What age can children start and what programmes do you teach? A Classes at Cypher are designed for ages four to 14. The younger children start, the better. They’re like little scientists at the beginning – they’re always trying new things – and logic is built into them. We often have parents ask us which computing language they should be teaching their children. But our main purpose is to teach children the fundamentals behind the languages so that they can switch between them. They all learn how to touchtype as part of our programme, and once they’ve reached the text-based languages, they learn to transition between them. By understanding how the languages are built up, and the logic behind them, they can figure anything out because they’ve got the base fundamentals. This is not like learning Spanish or French. Languages here are all the same, just structured differently.

Q What’s the most popular course? A It’s difficult to say because children have such varied interests, but we have a lot of creative themes and in the afternoon there’s
always a different themed project. Our courses are so broad and children learn to apply principles in coding and technology at all of them. Q Do they get a qualification? A All courses earn them a certificate of achievement at the end, and children can progress up through our levels. They start out as Micro Coders and move to Kilo Coders, and so on. These are age-based, and within each course they work towards their own

achievements. In the afternoons they’re doing their own projects, so they’re all getting something different, with different concepts covered that way.
core fundamentals of computer science, which aren’t really touched on until GCSEs or at university. We start this at age four, so these concepts quickly become second nature.
Q Why is it so important for the future generation to learn to code? A With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, the most important thing for the next generation is to understand what it is, how to program the robots, and how we can use technology to our advantage. This will take over people’s jobs, so the future generation is going to have to adapt and change. The key skills they need are in areas like communication, collaboration and creativity – things computers can’t do. That’s why coming to a camp is so different to sitting in front of a computer at home and learning to code online. Here, kids have to work together, understanding how to problem-solve as part of a team.
Q Where do you hold classes? A We hold our classes in schools and sometimes in community centres. We’re located in places like Notting Hill, Twickenham, Hampton Hill, Chelsea and Harrow. We’re also looking at expanding further across the UK and London. We’ve
Q How does Cypher expand on coding taught in the national curriculum? A The national curriculum sets the basis for what all children should learn as the bare minimum. Our curriculum is based on the

done some initial camps in America, and had interest from the Middle East. We are also developing our foundation. As we grow, I’m keen to be able to give back and find a way to offer what we’re teaching to a broader range of children. Q Which schools do you work with? A We have our after-school clubs in both independent and state schools. We are based predominantly in West London and we have just started at Harrow, which is exciting. Q What about your own kids and coding? A My nine-year-old son has been coding for five years. He’s severely dyslexic, so it was hard for him to grasp it at first. But it really helps with dyslexic children because their brains work so differently. And things like touch-typing are so important because they can use this in exams. My daughter is seven and she just loves everything her older brother does. They already have their own online shop for their school charity. It’s really sweet. MELODIES London’s Chelsea Quavers Music School is popular with budding musicians. Founding Principal Claire Meyer tells us why…
T
he benefits of learning a musical instrument at a young age are well documented – so it comes as no surprise to discover that the London-based Chelsea Quavers Music School, which runs holiday workshops and international tuition online, has an outstanding reputation among the families of its pupils. “There is no other school like it anywhere in the UK, or globally,” says Claire Meyer, the school’s Founding Principal. “All our tutors are hand-picked from the top conservatoires around the UK. The qualities we look for in each of our tutors

are empathy, energy, patience, creativity, enthusiasm and a passion to engage with and inspire each individual pupil.” Grammy Award-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre agrees with Meyer, saying: “Claire Meyer is simply one of the most extraordinary educators I have ever met. She has carefully crafted a bespoke curriculum and the Chelsea Quavers teaching style I believe to be the future of music education and teaching in general.” Whitacre is not the only wellknown supporter of the school, either. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 100% funding for a gifted and talented pupil to study at Chelsea Quavers Music School. And since 2014, Marsh & Parsons has been
an invaluable sponsor of the facility. It’s all because of the distinctive approach to music education Meyer and her team take. Meyer has spent the last few years developing the Chelsea Quavers curriculum, which has been highly praised by directors of music and heads of top prep schools in the UK. “I have carefully crafted a fun and educational music curriculum to teach children from age four upwards to read, write, perform, transcribe and compose music in a fun, easy-to-follow and engaging format.” The curriculum is designed to allow young pupils to work without constant supervision, through reinforcement and step-by-step progression. Yet Chelsea Quavers also offers an excellent tutor-topupil ratio of no more than five pupils to one tutor. “No other club in London offers this,” Meyer adds. “Every one works at his or her own individual level, and children are grouped according to ability and age.” Chelsea Quavers also offers international online tuition. “As well as the face-to-face camera, we use a close-up camera so the student can see in detail what the tutor is writing, as if they were sitting across a desk from each other.” In this way, students anywhere in the world are taught ABRSM Theory of Music Grades 1-5, Aural Grades 1-8, Sight Reading (piano) and Sight Singing Grades 1-8. For children aged four to 12, whether beginners or experienced musicians, Chelsea Quavers offers a musical education without parallel. “Our tutors are a tightknit team who provide the highest possible standard of education and engage with every child,” Meyers says. “That’s how we unlock potential, and self-belief.” Now that’s music to our ears. chelseaquavers.com
