Welcome o L
iving half in the city and half in the country is the aspirational lifestyle du jour. Ambassador for the method is, of course, Notting Hill’s Kirstie Allsop, who makes it all look so easy on television – and other local converts are Tom Hodgkinson and Victoria Hull. They live mostly on a smallholding in Devon, though they commute regularly into London to run their business. Amazingly, they do this in the name of leisure, in pursuit of an autonomous life in which they don’t have to work quite so hard. They are in fact having to work quite hard to make it all work, which doesn’t entirely defeat the point because they do retain quite a lot of autonomy. If you discount all the red tape that owning your own shop involves, that is. Their Idler Academy and Bookshop in Westbourne Park Road is a year old this month, and I met Tom and Victoria to talk about running a bohemian business and being reluctant capitalists – read all about them on page 20. And on the subject of books, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is promoting reading this month with a special focus on Dickens and an exhibition at Central Library in Hornton Street. How unlike its neighbouring Brent, which continues to ignore its burghers’ pleas to keep its libraries open (they won’t even let volunteers run the Kensal Rise one). There’s lots to read in this issue of Absolutely, so we hope you enjoy it.

Idle minds Tom Hodgkinson and Victoria Hull’s Idler Academy is a year old. Pendle Harte meets them to talk philosophy and Facebook PHOTOGRAPHS BY Richard Clark

P RO F I L E
Not being on facebook is like not having a mobile – I tried that and it didn’t work Basically, I’vetoo gone from being an Epicurean layabout with a vegetable patch to a petit bourgeois businessman in west London
D
espite their best intentions, neither Tom Hodgkinson nor Victoria Hull is at all idle. A year ago, the husband and wife team opened the doors to their Idler Academy bookshop in Westbourne Park Road with a view to hosting a bit of idle enquiry and some intelligent conversation, plus coffee. Since then they’ve had a nonstop programme of events, classes and lectures alongside a crash course in retail and business skills, all while maintaining a smallholding in Devon and looking after three children. It’s not what you’d call lazy. Hodgkinson has written several volumes on his philosophy of making life simpler, escaping the wage slave culture and being selfreliant, a manifesto for what he calls idling, which is nothing like simple laziness. “Idleness has never been about slobbing out in front of the TV because that’s just giving up. It’s a dynamic form of leisure,” he says, and education is an important part of it. “Skole in Greek means leisure – and leisure time is for self-improvement.” Thus the Idler Academy is a kind of school, a place dedicated to learning useful
skills and discussing ideas; and for Hodgkinson and his wife Hull, it has put a definite stop to any idleness they might personally incline towards. “We are working hard so that other people can idle, which is our way round it, philosophically,” she says. Because, philosophically, it’s tricky to reconcile running a business with the idle way of life. “Basically, I’ve gone from being an Epicurean layabout with a vegetable patch to a petit bourgeois businessman in west London,” explains Hodgkinson. Which are very different things, opposites even. For one thing, there’s balancing the books, an unavoidable pursuit with zero Epicurean value. “We’ve been wondering, what’s the bohemian approach to business? You can’t be that laid back otherwise you’d close. Really, we’d like to give away books, but unfortunately the only way of sustaining something is to be a little capitalist and pay rent.” It’s a reluctant admission and running a business, even if it is your own and thus a step towards freedom, is no joke. “The overheads are terrifying,” says Hull. “Retail is so relentless, it’s like having a baby – it
never stops. And there’s the most enormous amount of drudgery.” One of Hodgkinson’s ideas for his next book is about how to be both an idler and a small business person (self-sufficiency being one thing on a vegetable patch and quite another as an employer). Part of the idling ideal is a campaign against the work ethic and this, again, raises potential problems for the idle businessman. Pursuits that come under the Idler umbrella range from the popular to the niche, the modest to the intellectual. There are courses in Simple Living, bread making and wine tasting, beekeeping and animal husbandry, sewing, carpentry and ukulele lessons as well as Latin, English grammar and ancient philosophy. Of all the subjects, philosophy is the most popular, though there’s been
21
Not being on facebook is like not having a mobile – I tried that too and it didn’t work a surprisingly high turnout for grammar lessons too, especially since the academy recruited Mr N. M. Gwynne. This 70 year-old former businessman has sparked much interest in the widely neglected subject of grammar and his recent lessons at Selfridges, part of an Idler Academy pop-up programme, were surprisingly well attended and by a huge diversity of pupils, despite Gwynne’s strict, schoolmasterish style and Tom’s feeling that it might be “an eccentric thing to teach”. Latin, too, is a subject that attracts more interest than you’d think. Along with the basic incompatibility of business and idling, there are other subjects on which Tom and Victoria have had to modify their ideology. Facebook, for instance. Tom says: “Personally I’m horrifically compromised because I’ve attacked Facebook at great length in the Mail and the Guardian, and published a pamphlet about it – but people keep saying, why aren’t you on Facebook? There’s a deliberate plan to embed it into our lives. Not being on Facebook is like not having a mobile – I tried that too and it didn’t work.” Eventually, they concurred that it’s a noticeboard used by a billion people around the world – so, reluctantly, the Idler is now on Facebook. “I don’t really like email either, or computers or motor cars, but we just have to put up with it now.” Twitter, on the other hand, is fine. 22
“The 140 character thing is quite elegant.” Though of course you won’t find him tweeting about the weather, or his breakfast. Tom’s Twitter conversation will comprise a quote from Cicero or a medieval riddle, or something grammatical, maybe in Latin. Another reason they’ve given in to Facebook is down to organising festivals, which are a big part of Idler life. Victoria’s background is in festivals and really the whole idea of having a permanent home for the Idler came from their success at their first festivals. She says: “We did it at Port Eliot and it was really popular for three days, so on the basis of that we thought we could do it. My third child was at school and my brain was coming back, it made sense to start running events again – and we were always using someone else’s premises so
it made sense.” This year, the Idler will have a presence at five festivals (Wilderness, Shambala, Port Eliot, Wood and Orchestra in a Field) and for Tom and Victoria, these utopian weekends are a highlight: their children love it, the spirit of idling is very much alive and the shackles of the small business are temporarily lifted. For Tom and Victoria, it’s even worth being on Facebook for that. t 81 Westbourne Park Road W2 5QH; 020 7221 5908; idler.co.uk

Broken Down Doll boutique returned to Chamberlayne Road for an all-too-brief popup boutique bar and all-round fabulous spot. Behind the rails of gorgous and well-sourced vintage pieces (cocktail frocks, silky blouses, circle skirts and slinky dresses) was a bright pink neon-lit bar fuelling shoppers with Babička breakfast martinis (the recipe’s on page 64 of this issue) and absinthe cocktails (for after breakfast). The women of Kensal Rise were sold, so now they’re looking for a permanent home. Here’s hoping. brokendowndollboutiqueblogspot.co.uk

That’s entertainment Paul Weller – cruelly described in the Observer as looking like “a flawlessly styled, slightly over-obsessive lead singer in a Paul Weller tribute band” (though we totally know what they mean) – performed live at the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios for 6 Music’s 10th anniversary weekend. Handy for the father of seven, who lives in W9 himself. He was spotted looking coiffed on Portobello Road recently – clearly not suffering from too many sleepless nights then, despite having newborn twins.

Shady lady Mysterious west London-based mother of two EL James (full name undisclosed) has topped the New York Times bestseller list with her ebook Fifty Shades of Grey. Virtually unknown this side of the pond, her erotic novel – dubbed “mommy porn” – was released by an obscure Australian publishing house and instantly went viral across the globe; networked, apparently, between women on the worldwide school run. James has now given up her job in TV to concentrate fully on the writing career, after Vintage Books reportedly won a bidding war by slinging her a seven-figure sum. Who could she be? 26

Design for life myriad significant objects tell the story of Britain’s past 64 years The V&A’s summer blockbuster hails the outlandish brilliance of British design over the past half century. Absolutely sneaks a peek
F
rom the Queen’s Jubilee to javelin-throwing at the Olympics, 2012 is poised to go down as a momentous year for British cultural history. It is fitting then that the V&A
initiates proceedings with British Design 1948–2012: Innovation in the Modern Age, which starts chronologically with the post-war Austerity Olympics. Via myriad significant objects, curators Christopher Breward and Ghislaine Wood weave a narrative of the Britain of the past 64 years, guiding viewers through the advent of the 1959 Morris Mini Minor, through the Kenneth Grange Brownie Vecta camera, right up to Alexander McQueen’s breathtaking Horn of Plenty collection and Zaha Hadid’s not-yet-realised Aquatics Centre. It is through these
objects, argue the architects of the exhibition, that we unlock our history. Developments and tastes in fashion, furniture, fine art, graphic design, photography, ceramics, architecture and industrial design say as much – if not more - about the state of the nation as our political and military history, and certainly articulate how those key events influence the way we live. t Tickets cost £12, V&A members go free. British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern Age runs until 12 August. vam.ac.uk for details.

Freudian figures A new exhibition of work by Jane McAdam Freud focuses on the legacy of Notting Hill’s Lucian Freud and family
A
new exhibition by one of Lucian Freud’s lesser-known offspring focuses on the relationships within one of the country’s best-known families. Lucian Freud, famously father of at least 14 children (rumours suggest it could be nearer 40) and notorious for his difficult nature and perfectionism, is the subject of much of the new body of work, some of it created as he was dying last year. Jane McAdam Freud was for many years called simply Jane McAdam, having had no contact with her father between the ages of eight and 31, but when they were reunited in 1991, her life changed. Family history was always predominant in her mind and her sculptures and drawings focus on her familial relationships and the broader concept of family. A series of three sculptures depict her father on his deathbed, while others represent siblings and self-portraits of the artist. t Jane McAdam Freud’s Family Matters is at Gazelli Art House, 39 Dover Street W1, from 24 April to 29 May. There’s not much industry left in Notting Hill, but T&F Slack is doing a thriving trade in hand-made shoes. Pendle Harte goes behind the scenes at the W10 cobbler Photography by Hannah Young

ext time you buy a pair of brogues, spare a thought for Amanda. She spends much of her day hand-brogueing, and that means punching each tiny hole by hand in precisely equal increments just millimetres apart. It’s time-consuming and painstaking, and not something that many people are employed to do in W10. Amanda is making a pair of T&F Slack brogues in a workshop inside a complex that’s otherwise home to graphic designers and musicans making things in mostly non-traditional methods. It’s not that Amanda herself has been here for years. She works for 40
shoemaker couple Tim and Fiona Slack who have been in the trade for decades, but it was just three years ago that they returned to hand-making shoes, to order, the old-fashioned way. “We were hippy shoemakers in Glastonbury in the 1970s, making triple platforms,” says Tim Slack, who first learnt his trade at Clarks in Somerset. He and his wife Fiona have been making shoes ever since, but it was in 2009 that they noticed a revival of interest in hand-making shoes, with students emerging from colleges wanting to hand make shoes according to traditional methods. “So we thought we’d see whether we could bring shoemaking back to London.”
Their shop is discreet, but peer through the window and you’ll find footwear heaven. T&F Slack’s luscious leather shoes have a fan base that extends as far away as Peru, with a cult following among bloggers all over the world and it’s not hard to see why. Though the range of designs is small, each shoe is customisable with your colour combination of choice. The signature shoe is the simple, lace-up Derby (without brogueing) – a soft leather upper and a rubber sole in a bright contrasting colour. “We took the original Derby shoe and subverted it using colour,” explains Tim. And the made-to-order nature of it allows you to choose your own
LO C A L L I F E
colorway. So, there’s grey leather with a bright green sole, or dusty blue with purple, or orange and pink if you prefer. And the brogues can incorporate several colours (“We have a fan in Cyprus called George who gets six or seven colours onto his shoes. He has at least 12 pairs. We never refuse anyone’s colour combinations.”) At the workshop, the process is laborious, even without brogueing. Leather is carefully cut, then stitched
TIM AND FIONA SLACK
We were hippy shoemakers in Glastonbury in the 1970s, making triple platforms and glued into shape before being stretched onto a last (the lasts come from the one remaining factory in the UK that still makes them, in Northampton). It’s all about tension and working with the leather’s natural stretch; the leather contracts onto the last and takes shape. “In factories, the shoes are taken off the lasts as quickly as possible but really, the longer you leave them on, the more the shoes will hold their shape,” explains Fiona. Then the sole is attached using an antiquated machine that uses compressed air to apply pressure to set the glue. A single Derby shoe takes around two hours to cut and shape; a brogue needs double that. In this way, the Slack factory produces around 150 pairs a month. The St Lawrence Terrace shop opened very quietly three years ago, initially only on Saturdays, but now it’s open every day. You can order shoes in any colour combination and they will be made within four weeks – or you can simply buy a pair in their favourite colours and take them home with you today. And if you choose the brogues, look carefully at the pattern and remember Amanda. t Prices start from £185. T&F Slack Shoemakers, 32B St Lawrence Terrace W10 020 8969 9100 tandfslack shoemakers.com

of Shabby Chic. In an effort to immerse myself in the culture of the neighbourhood, I made a temporary home for myself in an apartment around the corner from my store. Having lived in California for 30 years, light and space are important to me and big windows and two lovely armoires created a sense of space and light in what was quite a small room. With my signature calm, comfortable and beautiful surroundings, I can leave hectic living at the front door. Calm means
a white palette and a lack of clutter: I layered in a few of my favourite things and cozied up the landlord’s sofa with a dozen Marseille pillows from the store. t From Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Inspirations and Beautiful Spaces cicobooks.co.uk, £25. ommy Blaquiere is on to a good thing. He’s energetic and eager and certainly not your classic art dealer, but part of a new breed. He deals in urban work, most of it bold and graphic, graffiti-inspired and in a world that owes much to Banksy. This month, his Westbourne Grove gallery, London West Bank, celebrates its first year of trading and he’s rightly proud. “Most of this art is in east London,” he says, gesturing at the three floors of exhibition space that show work by Ben Slow, FIN DAC, Inkie, Zeus, James Jessop, Copyright, K-GUY, Liliwenn, Grafter, Ben Allen, Cosmo Sarson and others. The name London West Bank is significant. The gallery is housed in the curiously shaped former bank on the corner of Westbourne Grove and Pembridge Villas that has been empty and derelict for several years. Blaquiere and his partner Paul Saunders spotted it, tracked down the landlord and persuaded him to let them lease it. After filling 50 skips full of junk, they created a large white space, which now also houses a music management room, a video and sound editing room, an art therapy room and a fashion cupboard, as well as a boxing ring (for lessons, not fights, assures Blaquiere). Originally a 19th century German bank, the building’s more recent history remains a mystery (though there was an advertising agency here in the 1980s and rumour has it that it was here, for a time, that record sales were counted to produce the Top 40). and Saunders were planning to call their gallery West Bank London, in honour of its west London location, but when they uncovered an original stained glass window bearing the letters LWB from the original Landes West Bank, they switched it around and the LWB design, fortuitously, became their logo. Over the past year, they have sold a wide variety of work to a wide variety of people, at prices ranging from £20 to £7,000. In the front garden there’s a designated graffiti wall where they hold weekly graffiti classes, attended by an unpredictable mix of people ranging, Blaquiere says, from Chinese tourists to groups of marketing executives on team bonding exercises (by far the worst behaved, he says), to local 13 yearolds. Expect more to come. t This month brings a group show to celebrate the gallery’s first birthday – First Cut will run until 25 April at London West Bank, 133-137 Westbourne Grove, W11 londonwestbank.com 020 7221 2847 51

MUSE NEWS Portobello Road’s Muse Gallery reopens as a new platform for emerging artists

fter nine years of wear and tear on the ‘Bella. the Muse gallery has recently undergone a refurbishment. Now that it’s back and looking slick, floors gleaming and walls displaying its characteristic provocative work, it’s like taking a step back in time to the glory days of its opening. The gallery and studio can be found just south of the Westway at 269 Portobello Road and it supports emerging and established artists by providing exhibition space with limited costs. At the core of the operation is a residency programme located in a studio at the rear of the building. Since opening, BA and MA graduate artists have worked on site for eight months per year, mingling with contemporaries, before ultimately
producing their own solo show at the end of the term. Devised as a platform for art practice, sales and exhibition, The Muse residency program offers artists a grace period to continue without prohibitive costs associated with studio hire or high commissions of sales. The concept is balanced between arts practice and the in-house commercial support of a gift shop. For once you will be able to walk out of a west London gallery with something original that doesn’t cost the earth. The Muse continues to host all

RECIPE First, shake all ingredients without ice. Add ice and shake for a fair amount of time, until thoroughly chilled (both your hand and the drink). Strain into a chilled glass. All right, so this frothy treat is a bit on the indulgent side, but what we love most about this cocktail is that it is a perfectly acceptable and civilised brunch drink (in New Orleans if nowhere else).

Portobello Dock, 342 Ladbroke Grove, W10 020 8962 1610; dockkitchen.co.uk
he Dock Kitchen has grown up a bit since it started as a pop-up in a furniture shop. Bright young chef Stevie Parle, with seemingly endless energy, is now a father-of-one and a prolific food writer as well as a fixture at his now permanent canalside eaterie. Its first cookbook just published, this is a clever restaurant that combines the exotic with the simple – some ingredients, for instance, are so confident of their quality that they are served naked and alone (one starter is simply ‘a slice of paleta Iberico de bellota’, priced at a minimalist £1.50) and the menu sweeps
around the globe with a deadpan worldliness that’s impressive, if slightly show-offy. But with food like this, you can get away with a bit of showing off. For our midweek dinner, the small place was packed with a grown-up arty crowd. Food is served on the late side – people eat at nine and are ready to feast. We resisted the set meal, which the whole table orders together (a five-course Sardinian menu spanning bottarga, fregola pasta, clams slow-cooked pork and pecorino sardo among other treats) and went for the a la carte, an addition to the kitchen’s initial philosophy of serving a fixed set meal every night. We tried the whole mammole artichoke, “cooked very slowly in olive oil with seven spice, zaa’tar and lemon” – a small artichoke, elegantly served with tiny piles of spice paste, its small juicy leaves full of taste. Chicken livers cooked in pomegranate molasses were sweet and spiced. My main course, fish biryani of cod, clams and octopus with a carrot and white cabbage thoran and coconut pickle, was a triumph, packed with spice
and scent, sweet coconut pickle adding exotica and generous on the juicy octopus and sweet clams. Also good was wild seabass with Swiss chard and anchovy gratin – and a final delight was a simple scoop of salted caramel ice cream, infused with the slightly medicinal and intriguing taste of caramel with a hint of salt. The Dock has become a serious venue with a menu to be reckoned with. PH t 67

ensington High Street’s luxurious Zaika is to the regular curry house what the Taj Hotel in Mumbai is to the backpacker guesthouse in Goa. For luxury and sophistication, they’re in entirely different leagues. Zaika, housed in a former bank, is all opulence and extravagance, making it the first restaurant of its type to gain a Michelin star.
For the ambitious, there’s an expansive tasting menu for the whole table, a feast that takes hours and spans six courses of indulgence. Order the option with wine and it’s an even bigger undertaking – there are lots of courses, so a different and fitting glass with each one is enough to leave even the most robust of us wiped out (we have learnt this the hard way). So resisting the tasting menu, we concentrated on the á la carte – this was a weekday lunch, after all. It’s all exotic and impressive, though not what you’d call light. First off, of course, there’s the frothy amouse bouche, a tiny teacup of truffled chicken and yoghurt soup. Proper starters were potato chaat, a high class version of a

simple street food dish – potato cakes covered in almonds with spicy chickpeas, crispy scallops with cauliflower mousse and soft shell crab with smoked chilli and mustard seed jam. Every mouthful of every dish is infused with spice and surprise – plus it all looks so pretty. Main courses comprised coconut poached prawns, in coconut and lime masala with mustard seeds and curry leaf, which was extremely creamy and moreish; a simplesounding butter chicken was more aromatic than you’d expect, buttery and beautifully textured; and a triptych of tandoori chicken tikka (eat from left to right in increasing order of marinade spiciness: basil and coriander, masala cheese, red chilli). All of it is designed and executed to impress, which it did. To finish, we ordered sticky toffee pudding, an unlikely choice, though laced with ginger and cardamom it took on a superior character to the usual gloop. Could any unlikely dish be given the Zaika makeover so successfully? Probably so. PB t

Stevie Parle’s rabbit biryani
Biryani is one of the great dishes of the world, it takes a long time to make but is worth it. It is a dish you find all over India and it’s interesting to see how the spices change in different regions. Rabbit is not a classic, but the delicate, distinct flavour of good-quality farmed rabbit is perfect in this most delicious of Indian celebratory dishes. Sometimes we add gold leaf and, if you make it in winter, you can sprinkle it with pomegranate seeds.
Rabbit biryani 450g basmati rice sea salt 2 red onions, thinly sliced 5cm fresh root ginger, finely chopped 150g unsalted butter, ghee or olive oil 4 tsp garam masala ¼ tsp turmeric 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp coriander seeds, ground 1kg farmed rabbit legs (about four hind legs)
250g thick yoghurt, plus more to serve 150g blanched almonds, coarsely chopped 1 tsp black cumin seeds 20 green cardamom pods 3 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 8 black cardamom pods pinch of saffron fresh or dried rose petals (optional) leaves from 1 small bunch of coriander leaves, roughly chopped
1. Soak the rice in warm water with a good pinch of salt for at least an hour. Then wash it until the water runs clean. 2. Choose a pan with a thick base, a tight-fitting lid and high sides, big enough to accommodate both meat and rice. Fry the onions and ginger in the butter, season well with salt, then add the garam masala, turmeric, ground ginger and coriander seed. 3. When the onions are soft and sweet, add the rabbit and cook for a few minutes to brown a little and absorb the flavours, then tip in the yogurt and nuts. Pour in about 250ml of water and cook gently over a low heat, covered with a piece of baking paper, until the rabbit is well-flavoured and quite soft. This will take about one hour. 4. Drain the rice and mix with the remaining whole spices. Soak the saffron in a few tablespoons of boiling water. Put the rice mixture on top of your delicious rabbit curry and cover with boiling water to just 2cm over the level of the rice. Season with salt. Increase the heat to high for the first few minutes, then low for the next 10. Remove from the heat and leave undisturbed for at least another 10 minutes. 5. Splash the saffron water over the rice. Garnish with fresh or dried rose petals, if using, scatter some coriander on each plate and eat with yoghurt. rying to get a table for a coffee on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Notting Hill is near impossible, though that just shows what a great bustling area it is and how lucky we are to be part of it. We finally find a spot at Gail’s, which is always dangerous (so many great cakes). On our way back to the shop we admire the stunning purple magnolia trees outside the new Max Studio store in Westbourne Grove, open at last after months of delays. It’s a welcome addition with stylish clothes at affordable prices. On our way to Pizza East Portobello for the great aperitivo hour, we bump into film director Richard Loncraine. He had generated quite a lot of interest with his crazy antique Italian bike with the handlebars behind the saddle. Mr Skött, a bike fanatic himself, could not resist having a ride on it, and afterwards a look at Richard’s new Cyclepedia App that he has just developed. Meanwhile, the Skött spaniels were invited to the Grufts exhibition at Graffik gallery on Portobello Road. Here they tucked into treats from Pet Pavilion while the grown-ups enjoyed Bulldog Gin cocktails and viewed the great dog portraits. Then it was off to Doyle Devere gallery for champagne and the launch of fashion house Paper London’s lovely new collection, where Mrs Skött was seen admiring the exquisite silk tops and tailored trousers – all in great colours with a 1960s feel to them. Being tall, blonde (when it’s not dyed red) and blueeyed, Mrs Skött is often mistaken for a Scandinavian even though she is a born and bred north Londoner. She does sometimes seem to be more Scandinavian than a lot of Danes, becoming engrossed in Danish TV series, embracing the wonderfulness of Danish interior design, eating herrings and drinking Akvavit with gusto. We were delighted when Signe Johansen, author of the Scandilicious Cookbook popped into the salon. There was lots of Scandi food talk and a plan in the pipeline to do a local Scandi baking class. changes every three months with the seasons, so we were ordering from the tail end of the winter one (by the time you read this it will have been replaced with a truffleheavy spring version). To start, there was tuna carpaccio with celery and pink peppercorns, plus cured meats with burrata di Puglia and roast tomato, all elegantly arranged, simple and high class. We loved pappardelle with duck ragu – soft and almost sweet meat in an intense, reduced ragu with a perfect texture. Whole sea bream in a salt crust was silky soft and juicy, the thick salt crust sealing in all the liquid, while sides of sprouting broccoli with garlic and chilli, and fried zucchini were moreish with a bit of crunch. To finish, an impressively scented and oozy chocolate fondant and glasses of matched dessert wine, which were totally unnecessary but very welcome. No wonder this restaurant is taking over the area. If you’re in need of a boost of bright light, Tan London offers some fabulous solutions. I wanted a base tan before a weekend in the Spanish sunshine and opted for a short session on the ultra powerful beds. These offer intensive UVA and UVB rays, requiring less time on the machine and a deeper, longer lasting tan. After careful questioning on my skin type and history, I achieved the slightly sun-kissed effect I had been looking for without the slightest hint of redness. Tan London was the first salon in London to offer Collagen Light Therapy, which is far less painful and expensive than Botox. Light therapy stimulates the production of collagen and elastin – dark circles will disappear and scar tissue will regenerate. She opened Juvita Ayurveda last year and it’s a stylish, friendly shop and spa, selling a mix of health foods and organic beauty products, alongside a catalogue of healing herbs, which Anu will prescribe. ‘Organic living for the body, mind and taste buds,’ reads her slogan. The theme is Ayurveda, with its emphasis on lifestyle and harmony, though Anu is keen to emphasise that her approach is not strict and her tailor-made packages are designed to be compatible with your life, not restrict it. Behind the shop are two treatment rooms; I was here for the signature ILA Rainforest Rejuvenation facial, a blissful, hour-long treat using the fresh, organic ILA products (Anu’s best-seller is the cult rose face oil). It’s a busy, busy day! 7.25 am Call my ex Chris to wake him as he’s doing the filming. He sounds like he was drinking last night. No wonder we split up - we vibrate at such different levels. 7.48 am Pack up yoga mats and Jagadambai’s Goa pants. T hey’re such lovely bright colours – which should cheer up the Tower Hamlets single mothers. 8.00 am Leave house with mats, yoga wear, incense and some chia seeds in case the single mothers get hungry. T he filming is in a studio somewhere in Stratford – wherever that is. 8.22 am I find the tube very challenging. Everyone looks so miserable and I feel really sorry for them, trapped in their low vibrational lives. 10.20 am Finally manage to find Stratford studio, which isn’t a studio at all but a pokey room above a butchers. T he energy here is terrible and I immediately light four Nag Champa incense sticks. No sign of Chris or the seven single mothers yet. 11.39 am T he single mothers arrive. All of them are smoking. I point out that cigarettes suppress the emotions and play havoc with your Vishuddha chakra but they just start laughing. 12.14 pm Chris still not here so I get out Jagadambai’s Goa pants. Becky holds up a pink pair and asks if they are for six year olds. 78
12.50 pm Chris finally arrives, saying he got lost. Becky tries on the pink yoga pants (which only reach her thighs) and does a lewd dance. Everyone laughs. 1.09 pm We decide it’s best for the women to wear their own clothes. 1.36 pm I get them to lie on the floor and do some Kapalabahti breathing to help cleanse their lungs but they’re all coughing and laughing so much that we have to stop. 1.45 pm The battery on Chris’s camera goes flat. 1.46 pm Chris and I have a huge stand up row. 2.08 pm Becky interrupts the row and says that she and the other single mothers have to eat or they will die. I offer her the chia seeds but she tells me to fuck off. It then gets pretty vocal and intense but I eventually back down and agree to give them their wages so they can buy sandwiches. Chris leaves with them to buy a recharger. 2.45 pm Where are they? 3.29 pm Still no answer from Chris and Becky’s mobiles. 3.48 pm Finish the chia seeds. 4.20 pm Give up and go home. 6.08 pm Go straight to bed. It’s exhausting trying to raise other people’s vibrations and I sometimes wish I’d chosen an easier path for this lifetime. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti, aba Ganoush t

The faces behind…
You made waxing into a luxury experience. How did that come about? We saw a huge gap in the market for a waxing-only service. Women and men wax regularly and we felt that this service could and should be improved at every level from administering the treatment, to the type of products used and also the environment that it is done in. We wanted everyone to enjoy coming for a wax, not dread it. And what’s the secret of painless wax? Excellent trained staff, attention to detail, positioning and the products used.
Strip launched in Notting Hill. Why here? Both Maria-Louise and I lived in Notting Hill at the time and we wanted the business to be close to our homes. Plus, Notting Hill is such a cool and vibrant place. Where do you live now and why? I live in Chelsea and MariaLouise lives in Notting Hill, both areas are amazing places, we have everything on our door step. The best bars, restaurants, parks and our head office is in Chelsea - so we both walk to work. What’s next for Strip? We are opening more branches, our next will open in Essex as we have so many clients that visit our City branch who always ask us to open there. We have just launched laser hair removal at our Chelsea boutique and are incorporating a new type of treatment called the laser wax. We are also working on a huge brand collaboration with an uber cool company (we can’t say any more about this at the moment). Lots more work will go into our own label this year and we are currently working on some very cute and comfy thongs. t

You’ve just launched a new loungewear range. Tell us about that. We’re really excited that we have launched a collection that is so versatile, each piece feels super sexy and yet so comfy too. It’s great to see the fantastic response from our clients on this collection and to know we’ve been able to create pieces that work well whether you’re at home or at a cool party, particularly in this economic climate.

W
hat do women really want for summer? Buns of steel that are as smooth as a baby’s bottom – and all without breaking a sweat. Luckily, award-winning clinic EF MEDISPA have dedicated April to all things bottom and come up with three peachy-perfect programmes. So whether you’ve only got days before you’re packing your passport or have months until you need to be butt perfect, EF MEDISPA will ensure you meet you better bottom deadline – no effort necessary.
The SOS beautiful bottom package (one week) Sometimes a girl needs results – and fast. This super-speedy programme starts with a session of AWT (Acoustic Wave Therapy) to disperse water retention and send fatty deposits running for cover. An ELD (Electro-Lymphatic Drainage) treatment will clear toxic congestion before a session of SPA RF which uses revolutionary radio frequency technology to tighten and tone skin for the ultimate quick fix.
Three weeks to chic cheeks (three weeks) For the woman with a little more breathing space, treble up your treatments and you’ll triple the visible results. In just under a month, you’ll receive three treatments of AWT, ELD and SPA RF for such a noticeable improvement in your skin’s condition that the fact you ever had cellulite at all will remain your little secret.

The ultimate beautiful bottom package (six weeks) It’s no coincidence that 68% of EF MEDISPA clients plan their pert posterior programme well before they set foot on exotic shores. Body perfecting bonus With your behind soft and supple, you’ll want the rest of your body to measure up. Using Vaser Fat Removal and High Definition Body Sculpting, EF MEDISPA locates and removes stubborn fat to streamline your silhouette with absolute precision. For those that despair of their stretch marks, launch a three-pronged attack with Fraxel Laser to turbocharge cell renewal, Carboxy Therapy to breathe new life into skin and High Frequency Mesotherapy to plump out lines with a hydrating vitamin elixir. Then lend your newly perfect pins a silky smooth finish with the Pain Free Laser Hair Removal – ideal for all skin types and pain thresholds.
Futuristic face treatments For a flawless face to match your fabulous body, EF MEDISPA’s experts use Dermal Fillers to soften lines, re-volumise the face and help your features take centre stage – all in under

Arthur Meehan’s intimate photographs of the pregnant female form are beautiful, subtle and understated
PORTRAIT OF A LADY
A
rthur Meehan is a fine art photographer dedicated to delivering beautiful and memorable portraits of women at one of the most poignant times in life. Meehan’s pregnancy nudes are natural and elegant and document this exciting period with all the taste and artistry expected of a leading photographer. The artist has exhibited two shows at Park Walk Gallery in Chelsea, A Private View and The WineBox Series. It is his love of the female form that has led to an interest in shooting nudes, and he now has twenty years of experience in the art form. A few years ago, when one of Meehan’s pregnant friends asked him to photograph her nude to capture her pregnancy on film, he decided to take on the challenge. He asked his wife to sit in on the session for the comfort of their friend, who had never posed nude before - and the results were wonderful. The images are subtle and understated; the curve of a woman’s body and stomach are shown to great effect in silhouette. The dark background and lighting makes the women look like bronzed statues glowing with vitality. After the success of the first shoot, more and more friends and acquaintances began to ask Meehan to capture their image whilst pregnant, and his house in Brook Green became a home studio. As for the actual day,
Meehan’s subjects are always welcome to invite partners or friends along with them, one lady even coaxed her partner into shot. Meehan says, “What I offer is not a day in a photo studio being photographed like a supermodel, I invite you into my home and it is a private quiet day of shooting very beautiful and personal photos.” Arthur Meehan’s images work to combat the pressures felt by women to look a certain way in today’s society. Meehan’s nude models are strong sirens, unabashedly sharing their bodies with the camera. He shoots on film rather than digital and lovingly develops all prints by hand in the dark room. That personal touch makes a world of difference and means that Meehan can create exactly the image you want. From the initial consultation, discussing your ideas and hopes for the images, to the shoot day and then development of the photographs - Meehan wants to make you comfortable and relaxed to help achieve the best possible final product and to commemorate your pregnancy or the beauty of your nude silhouette. t

Sculpt Your Body Slim in Six Weeks Louise Parker and her dedicated team are ready to bust your body into shape for spring
T
HE INTENSIVE PERSONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME was devised by celebrity trainer Louise Parker over 12 years ago and has since changed the body shape of hundreds of individuals. Her experience ranges from helping clients recover from long-term obesity, to taking care of some of the most beautiful bodies in the world. The unique programme combines six hours a week of her exercise method, alongside a rigorous dietary overhaul, for a six-week period. “Each week we train you in four 90-minute sessions in the comfort of your own home – bringing the gym to you and saving precious time,” says Louise. “Some clients choose to do three 90-minute sessions over an eight-week period and the results are still exceptional.” The Intensive employs exercise and diet methods that radically shift body fat and totally re-sculpt the body, without compromising metabolism. “It’s so important to teach our clients how to boost their metabolism so that once they have lost the weight they can easily keep it off,” she notes. “So many diets will get the weight off but your metabolism will come to a grinding halt or they are just not sustainable.” The programme’s emphasis on resistance work and an intelligent eating plan ensure the results that clients achieve are long lasting and, most of all, easy to maintain. “No aspect of what we
do is extreme,” she explains. “Every element of the plan is sensible, researched and proven to work. But what we do is put it all together to create massive transformations in our clients’ bodies and lifestyles. “My team are world class and without doubt some of the best in the country. Most come from a Sports Science background and we have two Olympic athletes amongst us. We all share a friendly, nononsense approach and between us we offer an unrivalled service to our clients. I’m hugely proud to have such a talented and committed team behind me.” Louise Parker believes anyone can
has to be done to return you to your former glory.” Louise Parker designs each programme with one of her team before the programme commences, based on the individual’s requirements and deadlines. A rigid, yet balanced food plan is devised, ensuring optimal results. Louise personally monitors your diet diary on a daily basis to ensure you are on the right track and that you get all the support and motivation you need to succeed. In six weeks, you will emerge looking better than you thought you ever could. What Louise Parker does isn’t gimmicky, it is instead an intelligent combination of three factors – nutrition, training and lifestyle – delivered in just the right combination. “Providing you have made the decision to change and are willing to let us guide you,” she asserts, “You simply cannot fail – clients routinely drop two dress sizes on the Intensive.” There are many bespoke programmes available, and following a telephone consultation, Louise will advise a suitable programme and schedule to suit any objective, lifestyle and budget. Louise asks that new clients commit to a minimum of three hours per week to ensure that they achieve amazing results. t
You simply cannot fail clients routinely drop two dress sizes on the Intensive have a fantastic body – regardless of age, body type and starting point: “By following my method, you really will be blown away by how you can change your body shape, overall fitness and exceed your own expectations.” Her programme is suitable for anyone wanting exceptional results, in record time. The Intensive is hugely popular with clients needing to be what she calls ‘red-carpet ready’ – whether that’s for a wedding, new job-role or even the school run. “I love helping post-natal mums,” she explains. “Since I had my daughters in quick succession, I fully understand the challenges new mothers are faced with, and what

Geoff Dyer
Novelist, essayist and Ladbroke Grove dweller
We had you down as a south Londoner but you live in Ladbroke Grove. How long have you been here? Just a couple of years – but wish it had been longer. We actually spent seven years in Camden before coming here, which makes it seem even nicer! But you’re sort of right, I was in Brixton in throughout the 1980s – a very happy time. What brought you here and what do you like about it? I like everything: Portobello, the mix of people, the architecture, the sense of belonging, the way I rarely have to get on a tube. Any favourite local haunts? Lowry and Baker on Portobello 90
Road, The Coffee Plant, the stalls on Golborne Road (actually I say stalls plural but I always go to the same one).
Americanised – and it just didn’t work so perhaps you’re right, there is some kind of deep stratum of Englishness being mined.
Can we look forward to any west London-inspired fiction from you? Ah, now that is a problem. Fictionwise, England doesn’t do anything for me. Much as I prefer west London to north or south, I should really be living in California.
Your new book defies categorisation – it’s a book about a film, or about watching a film. What was the starting point? I have seen Tarkovsky’s Stalker more than any other film except Where Eagles Dare. It is not only one of the most profound and moving films I’ve ever seen but one of the deepest works of art of any kind. It’s haunted me since I first saw it 30 years ago. So I thought I’d find out why. t
Many of your books are set abroad, but you seem to be a very English writer. Do you become more English as a result of travelling? No, I don’t think so. But when the new book was copy-edited all the spelling and punctuation were

Lateral thinking… Kensington-based Brid Carr Architecture is breathing new life into the Royal Borough’s period homes.
PHOTOGRAPHY: GEORGE RAMSAY
B
rid Carr Architecture is based at the Holland Street office of Wilfords London. Chartered architect Brid Carr and interior architect Laura Udding-Poth work as a team to cover all aspects of the project, from planning permission, architectural design and project management through to interior detailing and styling. Brid worked for a number of years on a range of large commercial projects before setting up her own company to focus on residential projects and high-end commercial schemes. Laura joined Brid from the Interior Design department at Linley and uses her skill to create exceptional high quality interior spaces. “Being based at Wilfords give us an extra insight into the commercial value of the properties in the area; we use this to advise on overall budgets and value ceilings which can help the client to make some key early-stage design decisions.”
“Modern living is much more about lateral, flowing spaces where kitchen, living and dining blend from one to the other,” says Brid. Through innovative design and layout, BCA carefully remodels period houses to increase the sense of light and space. “Space is at such a premium that it is vital to maximise the use of every square foot”. Stylish kitchens, clever storage solutions and opening up of walls can transform a tired Victorian building into a stunning place to live.
“BCA and the project team worked through the entire process with us from start to finish, delivering an exceptional result on time and within budget. We thought we knew what we wanted but they came up with a design that exceeded our expectations and that really suits our way of living.” J.C, Notting Hill
BCA is on hand from day one to give existing owners and prospective buyers an idea of how they could transform a property to make it suit their own specific requirements and to maximise value.

London – the place to be in 2012
I
cannot think of a better place to be than in London in 2012. The combination of the onset of spring with all its vibrant colour, longer days and a warming sun tends to bring out the best in everyone and puts a spring in one’s step. This is true every year, but it’s not every year that we host the Olympics, making London the place to be this summer. Demand for property in the capital remains very high with what appears to be a continual influx of more and more buyers from Europe (lots of Greek buyers at the moment), Asia, India, Africa and the Far East. Short supply and strong demand means that prices remain firm and are edging ever higher. Wealth preservation seems to be one of the main international drivers and London property is seen as one of the world’s more certain investment destinations. Domestic demand is also strong, hardly surprising as we have enjoyed three years of unprecedentedly low interest rates, which look set to continue for some time. I suspect that a majority of the transactions in 2012 will be in the first half of the year. March, April, May and June are traditionally good selling months with less new activity during the school holidays. I believe the Olympics will make August quieter than usual as people settle into their armchairs to watch the spectacle or jet off to foreign climbs to avoid the whole thing. Whatever you choose, I sincerely hope the various authorities responsible for the smooth running of the games get it right. There will be a global audience and London’s reputation is firmly on the line. I am increasingly being asked about the Olympic effect on the letting market and whether renting your home for a few weeks at premium rates is feasible or advisable. So far, the supply of property appears to be higher than the demand, although I expect that this will pick up considerably in the coming weeks, and therefore only the best properties are likely to attract the premium rent that makes it worthwhile. There is a lot of preparation and some risk in letting out your home on such a short term basis and it should not be undertaken lightly or without specific advice. My letting colleagues can offer you expert advice and we have a number of innovative measures in place to smooth the process. I remain certain that London will deliver excellent games, the property market will prosper and 2012 will be a vintage year. t kr@bectivelesliemarsh.co.uk, 020 7221 4805 bectivelesliemarsh.co.uk

time to move? Rollo Miles, manager of John D Wood & Co’s Holland Park office, welcomes the new spring market
“
As nature rears its head from its long winter sleep and daffodils begin to cover the ground, this is often the time of year one might decide to up sticks and move home. The days are longer, the nights shorter and we all start to feel better about life, more positive and full of energy. John D Wood & Co is primed and ready to help you with your property needs. We have not been hibernating this winter, but busy at work selling and letting homes, honing our skills and preparing for the spring market. So if you are thinking of selling or having your property valued why invite John D Wood & Co into your home? Well firstly, it is our 140th anniversary this year and we have a proven track record of achieving excellent results for our clients. We have 14 offices in central London with six in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea alone. By working together, we maximise our coverage and service, meaning that by registering with just one of our offices, you will have the expertise and more importantly, the buyers, from all our offices waiting to view your home. At John D Wood & Co we have a huge amount of resources at our fingertips, with many in-house services designed to work together and help take the stress and strain out of selling your property. We have a press office dedicated to achieving editorial in the national
newspapers and we advertise in all the publications you currently get through you door and more. We have a fantastic website which is updated hourly and use Rightmove, Primelocation, Twitter and Facebook to market properties across the world. Our valuation and surveying department is able to advise those of you dealing with tricky short-term leases or wishing to enfranchise your property. And last, but by no means least, is our secret weapon: the complimentary in-house sales service and interior consultants who will help you with every aspect of house move, from dressing your home for sale, helping with refurbishments and quick fixes like mending leaky taps. We love to sell property, from onebed apartments to villa houses with access to communal gardens, and we offer the same service for all. We are individuals who live and work in London, so, like you, we know what makes an area desirable and how to convey this to buyers. At John D Wood & Co we do not speak in hyperbole and know how closely linked the property market is to world events. The current global economic forecast is not entirely positive, and to pretend otherwise would be wrong, but this does not mean that people are not buying or selling homes. The property market is still buoyant, especially in this part of London. In such an economic climate it is vital to work with a trusted brand that can get the best result for you and your family. If you would like a fresh, up to date, and realistic market appraisal on your home or just some property advice please contact me, I will be delighted to assist” t

ickman Properties may not have 50 offices worldwide or boast several hundred employees, but they appear to be going from strength to strength. The staff are all personally selected to meet a strict criteria and code of practice that has made Rickman properties a firm alternative to the large corporate agencies. Perhaps this is due to a strong emphasis on the quality of their service from start to finish; including a gift to each purchaser of a Rickman customised bottle of French Champagne. Which, whenever possible, is left in the fridge of their new home (unless the builders are going in first). Rickman is a
member of all the major trade associations, including the prestigious National Guild of Professional Estate Agents, which is by invitation only and certainly a strong recommendation – Rickman is their only preferred agent in Kensington. The message is that Rickman is serious at what it sets out to offer in the Royal Borough. Size clearly isn’t everything. If you are thinking of selling or letting your home, large or small, Kieran Ryan, managing director of Rickman properties would only be too delighted to hear from you. t Rickman Properties 020 7937 9777

This six bedroom house overlooking Queens Park integrates original features with a contemporary lifestyle The Property
Accommodation
New York loft-style living meets Victorian townhouse with this stunning 3,100 sq ft. property overlooking Queens Park. By retaining the best period details of this impressive four storey house and combining them with modern architectural features such as exposed steel beams and poured concrete, the owners have created a stunning family home in one of northwest London’s most sought after districts.
The entrance hall gives a taste of what lies ahead with a tessellated floor leading the eye through to the impressive kitchen, dining and living area that forms the centerpiece of the ground floor. The full-height ceilings and enlarged skylights combine with the exposed steel frame and expanse of glass in the tri-folding doors to offer an abundance of light and space. The continuation of the concrete work surface through to the patio area of the south-facing garden is a bold design statement. A bay-fronted double reception room offers a more traditional period feel with full-height ceilings, original floorboards, fireplaces and ceiling roses. The first floor has a master bedroom suite with dressing area and a large bathroom featuring
wonderful Victorian sanitaryware and fittings. Five further double bedrooms and four bathrooms set over the upper two floors all offer the same mix of period charm and contemporary touches. t
