Camden businesses and residents discovered new ideas to cut their carbon emissions at a special low carbon lunch event last month. The free session was jointly hosted by the Camden Climate Change Alliance and Bedford Estates. There was lots of practical advice on saving energy and information on how to measure and reduce carbon emissions. Cllr Sean Birch, Camden Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainability and Transport said: “Through events like this we can encourage as many residents, businesses and organisations as possible to join us in working towards this important goal.”

CAMDEN YOUTH JAZZ BAND SCOOPS NATIONAL MUSIC AWARD Camden Youth Jazz Band has won a prestigious Yamaha Award for its performance at the National Festival of Youth Music finals in Birmingham last month. The 20-strong band of students who live or go to school in Camden competed against strong performances from bands from all over the UK and emerged victorious, with glowing commendations from the adjudicators at the Adrian Boult Hall. Larraine Revah, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, said: “Congratulations to the Camden Youth Jazz Band on winning this prestigious award. Playing in orchestras and bands makes sense of learning a musical instrument - the results can be seen in the outstanding playing of our senior pupils.” Camden audiences will next get to hear the band at the Royal Albert Hall on March 19 2012 at the 8th Camden Schools Music Festival. camden.gov.uk
GREENFINGERED PUPILS SHOW THEY’VE GOT FLOWER POWER AT AWARDS Budding gardeners from Camden’s schools have scooped a host of awards at the annual Camden in Bloom horticultural competition. Pupils from local primary and secondary schools were presented with trophies, certificates and plants for making their school gardens stand out.Councillor Abdul Quadir, Mayor of Camden, said: “It is always fantastic to see how many schools take such pride in their outdoor areas and involve pupils in gardening and growing. This competition and these awards are our way of saying thank you for all their hard work and passion.” camden.gov.uk
HAMPSTEAD’S ROYAL FREE HOSPITAL OPEN DAY A HUGE SUCCESS
The Royal Free celebrated its annual open day last month with some celebrity guests. Arsenal ladies’ football team players Emma Byrne, Ellen White and Jordan Nobbs kicked-off proceedings with a round of keepyuppies before taking to the floor to chat to stallholders and visitors. Around 500 people attended the event, which also offered a range of health checks, in the hospital’s Sir William Wells Atrium. David Sloman, chief executive, said: “One of the things we really focus on here at the Royal Free is not just looking after people when they are unwell, but also ensuring that we help people to stay healthy. We’re delighted that so many people came along to support the event and find out more about how prevention is better than cure.” royalfree.nhs.uk 11

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A
DAME MARIANNE GRAY TALKS WITH DAME HELEN MIRREN
Y
ou might expect that interviewing Dame Helen Mirren, star of the stage and of screens both silver and small, would be an unnerving experience. But her answers to a couple of ice-breaking questions very quickly set me at ease, and reassure me that I’m in the presence of a celebrity who is remarkably and resolutely grounded. “If,” I ask, “you were to die and be restored to life as something else – an animal or object – what would it be?” The immediate response? “A very worn sofa.” Unexpectedly amused, I follow this up by asking what is Dame Helen’s idea of perfect happiness. And once again I’m met by a distinctly un-Hollywood reply. After more than 40 years in
showbusiness, and having won every award going – from BAFTAs and an Oscar to Emmys, Golden Globes and a whole heap more besides – Helen Mirren’s idea of contentment is to sit by a clear river on a July day with the smell of cut grass in the air. Like I said, grounded – and great fun to boot. Although I don’t imagine Dame Helen has much time to sit and enjoy sunny riversides these days. One of our busiest actors, in almost constant demand on both sides of the Atlantic, her career spans five decades and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Even more surprising (and inspiring) in an industry known for its rampant ageism, she’s still now, aged 66, seen and talked about as a true siren. Her allure, it seems, knows no bounds. So how does she navigate in such notoriously treacherous waters? ‘There are no rules on how I choose my roles,” she says. “It can depend on what I have just done. Or, for me, where my husband [the American director Taylor Hackford] is and if we’ve been separated for a long time. And if I’ve not been on stage for a while, I love to

go back to theatre. And I love to come home to London. I was born in London and I’m still a Londoner at heart.” Dame Helen trained at the New College of Speech and Drama in Ivy House, Anna Pavlova’s old home on the North End Road in Hampstead. These days she has a house in Wapping, dreams of having her own allotment in the hilly suburban paradise of North London and loves to shop at Whitechapel Market or Spitalfields. The National Theatre at Waterloo she considers her second home in the capital. A real lover of London life, then. Does she never feel tempted to just up sticks and go to Hollywood for good? “We live in low-key ‘green’ domesticity in London, and do just the occasional glittering premiere in Los Angeles,” she says. “I think both of us feel London is our true home, somewhere we can both get on with our lives. We drop into LA when we need to, but I’m not wild about the lights of Hollywood. I prefer to live a quieter, more anonymous life in London.” Born in Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in Hammersmith as Ilyena Lydia Mironoff, Dame Helen’s mother was an English butcher’s daughter. Her father was the son of a White Russian colonel in the Tsarist army who was in England negotiating an arms deal

with the British Government when the Russia Revolution occurred in 1917. With no chance of a friendly reception if he returned home, the colonel stayed in London, becoming a cab driver first in London and then on the south coast, where Mirren was to grow up. She describes her early life in Leigh-on-Sea as that of “a convent girl just waiting to get away”. Clearly her background remains important to her, not least because this mixed inheritance adds to the sense of ‘otherness’ which has served her so well in her career. Her earliest successes in acting helped her to escape the tedium of a conventional life, and she soon garnered a reputation as a rebel, a hippy chick, independentminded and formidably attractive to boot. Early successes saw her vaunted as a great actor and the thinking man’s sex symbol, a much-needed antidote to the many simpering, preening girls who were clogging up the screen. It’s this cross-gender appeal and ability to play strong, complex characters that has defined her career. Recent years have seen her balance acclaimed stage work alongside big-budget studio flicks including the remake of Arthur, co-starring controversial comedian Russell Brand. Between turns in Hollywood headlinegrabbers, however, Dame Helen seems intent on keeping her hand in with smaller, more esoteric films like The
Last Station (in which she plays writer Leo Tolstoy’s long-suffering wife Sofia) and Julie Taymor’s much-anticipated adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest – in which she takes the traditionally male role of Prospero, the sorcerer (now renamed Prospera). ‘The great thing about Shakespeare,” Dame Helen remarks, “is that you can do almost anything with it and it never breaks; it just reveals other elements within the play. I had met the director, Julie Taymor, at a party and we were talking Shakespeare. I had no idea she was planning this film and I actually said to her: ‘You know, I could play Prospero – as a woman.’ She asked me if I would like the role and I said yes and that was it.” From the mouth of any other star, it would seem like the product of media training – a prepared effort to impress by virtue of seeming as simple and straightforward as possible; an attempt to hide the reality of a cluster of agents and managers and executives making decisions by focus group. But Dame Helen doesn’t strike me as the type to go in for
media training – or to put up with any unnecessary complications. All the golden accolades from a lifetime at the top of her game seem not to have changed her; even receiving the title of ‘world’s sexiest older woman’ too many times to count hasn’t lent her the air of a diva. And yet she looks as fabulous as ever. You can see why – as legend has it – she has received over a hundred marriage proposals in her life. Whatever the truth, she accepted only one, when aged 52 she decided to marry Hackford. Her self-assurance must be as solid as her acting, I think. And then I ask her what sort of actress she thinks she is. “When I was young I failed as an esoteric actor,” she says. “Ultimately I’m not part of any group and I wanted my name up there in the lights. I know I’m not a sort of grumpy actress,” – here she gives a salty chuckle – “I laugh a lot on set, I love my job and I approach it with a certain amount of seriousness. But I can’t abide the pretensions of movie star business, all that flashy stuff. I just love to do my work and go home.” The Tempest is out on DVD on September 13

HEALTH &BEAUTY
Nature& Gemma Billington tests the pilates introduction at Islington’s Tatami Health
F
rom the exposure and coverage it has garnered in recent years, pilates is something of an exercise du jour - part of the trendy Londoner’s activity schedule - despite being developed in the early 20th Century. As an (admittedly lapsed) yoga fan, pilates had been on my radar to ‘check-out’ for some time. When signing up to a new exercise class, a big dilemma is knowing where to go and who to trust. Every practice has its own ‘style’ and no two classes are the same. Tatami Heath are unique in that all the instructors are trained physiotherapists and their classes are small and tailor-made to an individual’s requirements. The ‘scientific’ aspect of Tatami’s services is evident in the introduction I’ve signed up for: before any exercise today, I’ll be having an ultrasound of my abdomen. It’s not a requirement, but it is a recommended service. As I sit in the stylish reception area awaiting my scan, I’m totally unsure what to expect. In a bustling part of Islington - opposite Angel tube station and Chapel Market - is the chic and tranquil Tatami Health clinic. An open-plan studio with bamboo artwork and wooden flooring projects an earthy yet contemporary space that reflects Tatami Health’s Japanese influence - the word ‘Tatami’ meaning ‘layers’ in Japanese. Ellis Taylor is the Senior Physiotherapist and Director and has worked with numerous top sportsmen and women over the last ten years. My prior knowledge of pilates was somewhat
Nurture
limited; I’d heard it was popular amongst dancers as a way to prevent injury, but also that it’s used to aid the recuperation process. Ellis confirms that both are true, but admits that a lot of clients are those who have already sustained damage and need to recover. Ellis guides me through a diagram of what is about to be illustrated on the scan. The ultrasound is similar to one that would be used in pregnancy, and with the cold gel and scanner pressed against my side, I half expect to see a mini-me on the screen. Instead, I’m shown a fascinating insight into my abdomen. The core muscles are made up of the external and internal oblique and the transverse abdominal - illuminated on the screen in shades of grey. I’m instructed to perform a series of pelvic floor and stomach exercises with the internal effects illustrated on the scan while Ellis points out what’s going on and how he detects any imbalances or dysfunction. As the muscles expand and contract like a balloon, I’m told I have an imbalance that could result in back problems later in life - unfortunately, a common ailment given the sedentary lifestyle the majority of us lead. Pilates is designed to strengthen the body and mind through controlling the core muscles which affects the spine. It’s fascinating to see the muscles contract with the slightest movement and jiggle when I let out a laugh. Our hectic lifestyles mean it’s easy to neglect our bodies and get stuck in a destructive
routine; the pilates experience reminds me of my yoga days and how enjoyable it is to really tune in to your body. The exercise room is the most prominent example of the clinic’s Japanese influence, with sliding doors and a Tatami floor - made up of traditional woven mats. This is where the pilates classes are held and Ellis guides me through a series of exercises incorporating the abdominal techniques from the scan. There seems like an awful lot to remember - what breath to move on, what position I should be in - pilates is a cognitive process, the idea being that the core muscle control becomes second nature. I move on to a reformer, a classic pilates exercise machine. The workout is relatively mild but the stretches are definitely felt intensely throughout my body; particularly in my thighs the following day! Ellis remarks that pilates won’t leave you sweaty and exhausted like a typical gym workout, but that it is a process enabling you to control and nurture your body. The customised aspect of Tatami Health’s services (which also include physiotherapy and massage), plus their extensive knowledge and expertise, is really rather special. With so many classes and places to choose from, it’s nice to know that with the Tatami team, you’re in expert hands. Run to the beat of your feet, not your heart For some people the prospect of running for fitness is fraught with the fear of the aches and pains that they suffered the last time they ran, or indeed the aches and pains that they might expect if they were to run!
I
t’s said that some people are ‘built’ for running and others not so, but it’s a saying that describes those people that can run far and fast, it doesn’t mean that other body types can’t run for fun and fitness. When we’re asked, as physiotherapists, whether or not someone should run or not and if it would be bad for their knees for example, the immediate and simple answer might very well be no, but a more considered answer is usually yes. Confused? When we’re looking after someone with knee pain, we probably would say no in the short term. Most knee pain is usually caused by pressure travelling through the knee that has been excessive and uncontrolled in some way. In the long term though, we would expect that with a little bit of awareness,
the pressure travelling through the knee could be controlled sufficiently to reduce the pain in the knee, and so we would say yes...but we wouldn’t say to run to your heart’s content! Not yet anyway. It might come as a shock to say that most people have a better cardiovascular capacity than they might expect, particularly if they do some indoor cardio at the gym. It’s actually the muscular endurance of their legs that won’t be on par when running outdoors and this is the discrepancy that gets people in trouble with their knees when they start running. Typically someone starting out at running, or returning to it after a long break, will run until they’re huffing and puffing, start to reach their cardiovascular limits, then they’ll stop and walk a bit before setting off again at a run. By this stage they have usually sailed past the muscular endurance of their legs and their core with reckless abandon to burn those calories and tick off the miles, all to the detriment of their knees. This is what you’d call running to the beat of your heart, and it’s not a great way to start. The safest way to get into running is to run to the beat of your feet. For your first few runs, don’t run with headphones blaring in your ears but listen to your feet instead. They should be quiet and soft. As soon as they start to get loud and ‘slap’ the pavement that’s when you need to stop and walk. This will be well before
you’re properly huffing and puffing. Walk for just a couple of minutes then get back into a ‘quiet’ run again until you get noisy once more. When your feet are nice and quiet, the muscles of your legs are working well to absorb the shock of each step and protect your joints. Once your feet are ‘loud’ then the pressure is going to be excessive in your knees and other joints and that’s when you’re likely to experience pain. The trick then is to gradually build up your running time and distance based not on your level of cardiovascular fatigue - huffing and puffing - but more the quality of your steps, as judged by the sound of your feet. This summer at Tatami Health, we’re offering runners with knee pains or other leggy aches an opportunity to soften their strides and learn to find the fun in running again. Physiotherapist, Ellis Taylor from Tatami Health

DA PUNY – Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta 5 (00 39 0185 269 037) – Da Puny is widely regarded as the best of the restaurants on the harbour. The fresh fish and the lasagna in pesto corto (classic pesto with the addition of a little tomato) are the stars of the menu while the antipasto della casa is an original mix of tasters such as onion flan or grilled pepper and anchovy. LA CUCINA DI NONNA NINA – Via Molfino 126 (00 39 0185 773 835) On the other side of the Portofino promontory, in the quiet village of San Rocco, La Cucina di Nonna Nina occupies two tiny rooms in a rustic villa. Guests are served delicious Ligurian dishes such as stuffed cuttlefish or trofiette pasta cooked with nettles and pesto – just like mamma used to make!

Portofino Our editorial team explore the picturesque Italian fishing village and resort on the Italian Riviera
1 2 3 4 5
Portofino is small; it sits on a peninsula in the Tigullio Golf east of Genoa in the northern region of Liguria. If you intend to stay longer, visit the nearby seaside towns, Camogli and Santa Margherita.
Head over to the other side of the peninsula to the Abbazia di San Fruttuoso; the abbey, built in the 11th century, is surrounded by pine and olive trees. Visit Cinque Terre; composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vernazza is particularly scenic; with no car traffic it remains a rare idyll in the modern age.

L
aos is a small, landlocked country, but it packs a (very gentle) punch. In the south, cycle to Wat Phou - a beautiful temple complex reminiscent of Angkor Wat, hunt for dolphins in the watery maze of Si Phan Dhon, or swim in Pakse’s ice cold waterfalls. Head north for tubing in the backpacker’s nirvana of Vang Vieng. Watch out for watersnakes - and that omnipresent rice whisky, Laos Laos, which you’ll be offered at every breathtaking turn. After the manic cities of Thailand and Vietnam, with their shrieking tuk-tuks, enthusiastically persistent sales people and the smog that seems to settle routinely around lunchtime, Laos is - quite literally - a breath of fresh air. Here, even in the capital of Vientiane, the tuk-tuks go at a more relaxed pace, and no one raises their voice. You won’t be taken through seventeen gem shops on your way to the temple; in fact, you’ll be lucky to get more than a friendly glance from a local hard at work. If it’s the city you want to get away from, this is the place for you: there’s not a building over five storeys high in the whole country. But if you do crave that big city rush, just jump on a Mekong boat bound for northern Thailand (you’ll have to be patient though; like everything else in this country, it goes slowly). For me, the icing on the cake is Luang Prabang. A UNESCO world heritage site where you can rise early and witness the monks take alms, visit nearby elephant sanctuaries and sample some fantastic French-Laotian cuisine - the list of things to do is endless and would charm the most intrepid of travellers. Laos really is a haven; home to some of the friendliest people in Asia and not a major tourist destination. My advice? Get there soon; somewhere this perfect might not stay so peaceful for long. Rebecca travelled on Intrepid Travel’s 5-day Classic Laos Short Break, costing from £350 pp (excluding international flights). Visit the Intrepid Travel store, 76 Upper St, Islington or call 020 7354 6169, intrepidtravel.com

RESTAURANT REVIEW
MADE IN CAMDEN HelenÊ Baron finds out how good the food is at The Roundhouse’s dining room...
T
he first thing to note about Made in Camden is that the staff are extremely friendly – if friendly means having a ten minute natter with a barman on the subject of cocktails (which in my book, it definitely does). In short order, our welcoming mixologist knocks my partner up a cucumber, kiwi, elderflower, lime and vodka concoction (with kiwi garnish), while I opt for the ‘Primrose Hill’ sparkling wine (it’s not champagne if it wasn’t made there and when in Rome, and all that). The second thing to note is the restaurant’s amazing selection of gastronomic sharing plates – think seasonal, sophisticated dishes with a rustic twist. It’s the perfect place to share a bite with friends, with great grub and a friendly atmosphere and I foreground these strengths with good reason: Made in Camden deserves to be recognised on the strength of its food and its service before anything else. The fact that it also boasts a notable location – at the front of legendary Camden music venue The Roundhouse – is just an added bonus. Newly minted as the official dining room of the prestigious venue, Made in Camden replaces the previous bar, which I remember, vaguely; the new addition is a welcome improvement, a hip canteen in the style of a boutique Berlin hostel, seriously committed to good food. My companion and I arrive after the evening’s show has begun, missing the rush, and start with some plump, oil and garlic-drenched olives. The atmosphere is convivial and oddly enervating, like so many of the new breed of restaurants

housed in buildings of note (museums, art galleries and so on) Made in Camden benefits from its closeness to so much cultural activity. It’s as if there’s a special sort of energy in the air... and the promise of good food after a little intellectual or aesthetic exertion is never a bad thing. The restaurant takes its name not just from its wider location but from the long line of characterful individuals who have shaped the building through its various incarnations. The Roundhouse was first inaugurated as a music and arts venue in 1964 before closing to the public in 1983 and reopening following renovation in 2006. It is now an acclaimed part of London’s booming live music scene, a world-famous symbol of Camden’s musical history. And what better way to reflect that than by introducing an eaterie that makes use of Camden-based suppliers (Bibendum Wine Ltd, Camden Town Brewery and an Islington-based family butcher). Made in Camden’s interior designer, Michael Sodeau, and Head Chef Josh Katz are both North Londoners, as is Mark Darbyshire, the man behind the framing of every picture on the walls! This is an establishment dedicated to serving the local area, and with the quality of its food, it’s definitely flying a flag for the area. My partner and I ordered four sharing plates to give us an overall feel for the cuisine. I was perhaps unduly famished, having skipped lunch but the plates are slightly small so if you’re after a big meal, you might want to try one of the larger options (of which there are five). The sharing platters are a great idea, offering a fun and social way to enjoy
a diverse selection of treats without leaving you uncomfortably full – which is exactly what’s required for a pre-show meal. We sampled roasted candy beetroot with mascarpone, pea shoots and hazelnut dressing; grilled sardines with lemon thyme and chilli on sourdough; crisp sea bass with tahini, blood orange, oregano, pine nuts and flat bread, as well as roast pork belly with confit fennel crumble and plum and rhubarb relish – all washed down with the house red. Pork belly’s ever so fashionable at the moment and this example was great – but it’s a testament to the chef’s equable approach that my carnivorous companion actually slightly preferred the fish and vegetable dishes. Luckily, we had room for dessert as the confections on offer are pretty tantalising. The menu boasts mango creme brûlée and pistachio cake, chocolate moelleux with cherry mousse and even mixed berry chocolate bread and butter pudding. But in the end, the peanut parfait, chocolate mousse and salted butter caramel captured my heart while the white chocolate cheesecake with caramelised banana had my companion’s full attention. Ultimately, then, a delightful evening of chit-chat and food was had and the only disappointment was not to be attending a performance afterwards. As a new(ish) addition to one of London’s most exciting cultural hotspots, Made in Camden works brilliantly. Roundhouse Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8EH 020 7424 8495 39

SPOTLIGHT Local property developer Dennis Williams first opened The Tile Box in Islington in 1997. Following on from its success, he has since opened Bath Sorts and Concept Kitchens. Dennis discusses the story behind his businesses, surviving the recession and his passion for interiors and design...
SOMETHING SPECIAL IN BARNSBURY
LOCAL PROFILE
With Dennis Williams of The Tile Box, N1
What made you open The Tile Box? Whilst working as a developer/tiler/contractor at a small premise, I found that I needed a larger base, and at the time our existing lease was coming to an end. I stumbled across a shop unit with office space in the basement and it seemed ideal, as retail is something I had experience in before and appealed to my overall business sense. Why tiles? My late father was a tiler so I guess it was in the blood, and tiles have always been of massive interest to me. Although I’m a property developer, I initially trained as an architect and went on to pursue a more ‘design and build’ career, concentrating on Interior Design which often focused on stone, mosaics and tiles. How was The Tile Box received? Unbelievably well. From 1997 to the present day, we have always sourced the finest and most unique tiles. What’s new in tiles? Tile trends are constantly changing, so we cover the full spectrum; from contemporary glass tiles, porcelain, stone, mosaics and Amtico flooring to very traditional Victorian tiles for the front path.
What Inspired you to open Bath Sorts and how was it received? Well to be honest, the shop unit on the opposite corner became available and I saw a gap in the market for fine quality bathrooms combined with our usual excellent service. I cannot deny, I was also fed up with shoddy service within the industry encountered while supplying my own developments. Again, as with The Tile Box, it was very well received. Of course, by now we had many existing customers and had a reputation for service and quality which helped. How has the recession affected you? This was a concern to me but actually we have continued to go from strength to strength having never leveled off, showing growth year on year even within the recessional period. What is big in bathrooms at the moment? The bathroom industry is
designer led. The brands we sell have often attached themselves with well known internationally renowned designers like Philippe Starck and Norman Foster. Because of this, our products are always at the forefront of design. What brands do you sell? Among the high end brands we sell Alape, Bisque, Duravit, Dornbracht, Hansgrohe and Vola to name just a few. Why did you start Concept Kitchens? You opened in 2007 when the recession first began, how did you find it? This was mostly customer lead. People were coming in for bathrooms and tiles then going elsewhere for their kitchen. With my aptitude as a designer, it was a logical step. I knew the recession was going to bite and bite, but believed in my product choices and the service levels we offer.
What kitchen brand do you sell? What do you think of the market? We sell Pronorm, a high quality German brand synonymous with the high end bathroom and tile products we display. I spent a year looking at many German and Italian kitchen suppliers before choosing Pronorm. It’s a market that really excites me, not least because customers get much more involved in the actual design process and really push our designers. The kitchen of course is also the heart of the home. How do you see the future for your retail showrooms? With continued careful product selection and excellent customer service skills, I believe we will continue to grow and I am planning to open another showroom next year housing bathrooms, kitchens and tiles all under one roof as this, together with our high end product selection, seems a formula for success! 40 Offord Road, Islington N1 020 7700 1444 thetilebox.co.uk bathsorts.co.uk conceptkitchensislington. co.uk

My Interior Life
Pippa Jameson What made you pursue a career in interiors? I have always had a passion for interiors. My mother was fashion student at Central St Martins in the 60’s colour and pattern was naturally a large part of our lives. As I moved through school, college and university, it was textiles that I steered towards. Realising very quickly my love for colour and composition, it was a magazine editor that suggested I became an Interior Stylist.
Describe for us your typical day… That’s the beauty of my job, there is no typical day! I have a phobia about routine, the thought of doing the same thing day in and day out really scares me and so I am hugely grateful for the variety that my work offers. When I am in the office I will either be editing my blog (commissioning and planning features) or working on a photoshoot. This may be styling roomsets for an advertising job or commercial or styling a house on location for an editorial shoot. Sometimes I can be working on about 4 projects at once which

W
hen you’re travelling, it’s always better to go off the beaten track – to find shops, restaurants and bars that aren’t full of holiday makers, nor where you feel you’ve fallen into a tourist trap. A handful of websites exist to guide you to the local hang outs, where you get a true feel of the place you’re visiting. You may know the saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Take a look at www.DoAsTheLocalsDo.com (or www.datld.com for short). This is a new type of travel guide. It matches you and your interests to real locals who give you quick, punchy, up-to-date travel advice and activities. After all, who better to be your travel guides than the people who live where you’re going. People who share your interests and tastes. People who can advise you on what to see what to do, and where to eat. Look more into the website, and you’ll find a set of quite nifty features. The profile matching is a great idea. The results I get when searching for an activity have been submitted by people like me – similar interests and age, for example. The ability to create your own itinerary made up of activities posted by others I thought worked really
well. This can then be printed off, complete with a map for viewing when on holiday which is useful too. Some of the local’s advice could be more comprehensive, but that’s certainly not a fault of the site. Helpfully, they have a free iPhone App as well, which came in useful when out and about and wanting to gain access to the wealth of travel advice that’s available.
As a London local, you’ll also be encouraged to add your own activities, and even suggest an itinerary for others to follow when visiting London. Visit www.DoAsTheLocalsDo. com, follow them on Twitter. com/DoAsTheLocalsDo or join their Facebook fans at Facebook.com/ DoAsTheLocalsDo

IN REHEARSAL: CRAZY FOR YOU AT REGENT’S PARK OPEN AIR THEATRE
PLAYÊ Ê IT FORÊ LAUGHS Continuing Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s tradition of staging a musical a year, 2011 brings a new production of Ken Ludwig’s Crazy For You... Crazy For You is an award-winning musical comedy based on the music of Gershwin and written by the internationally acclaimed playwright and director, Ken Ludwig. The story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930s playboy who’s dream in life is to dance, Crazy For You first enjoyed a successful run on Broadway in the early nineties. Now part of the Open Air Theatre Summer 2011 programme in Regent’s Park, we’ve been lucky enough to catch up with Ken - who has a string of Broadway hits under his belt, including the current run of Lend Me a Tenor about his love of comedy, his influences and inspirations, and why London is his favourite city...
Ken Ludwig Q&A
Your name is synonymous with modern comedy. What is it about the genre that you find so interesting? Does comedy writing come naturally to you? Comedy is the genre that I’ve always identified with since I was a youngster. My parents took me to some comedies early on and I was a voracious reader
as a student and I ended up making English and American stage comedy my central area of interest and study. I recently wrote an article for the Yale Review on the history of British and American stage comedy and a genre of it that I like to call the “great tradition.” I think that stage comedy is where I feel comfortable because I’ve studied it for so long and think about it so much. I suppose the bottom line is that I love to go to the theatre and come away feeling inspired by life. How did you start out in the business? Have you always wanted to do this? I’ve wanted to be in the business since I was six years old when my parents took me backstage at a Broadway comedy called Visit to a Small Planet, by Gore Vidal, and I met the wonderful star of it, Cyril Ritchard. Crazy for You is a screwball comedy set in the 1930s and largely based on the music of Gershwin and their musical

CULTURE
Girl Crazy. Do you like this particular period in terms of style and production? I do like the 1930’s – you’ll notice that Lend Me A Tenor is also set in the thirties, as is the comedy I wrote that was commissioned by the RSC which I called Shakespeare in Hollywood. CRAZY FOR YOU AT REGENT’S PARK Whether it’s true OPEN AIR THEATRE. LEFT TO RIGHT: KIM or not, the 1930’s MEDCALF (IRENE), SEAN PALMER (BOBBY), FOSTER (POLLY) AND MICHAEL always represent CLARE McKELL (LANK). BELOW: REHEARSALS to me a simpler time when rules and values were in place. Comedy needs a society with rules so that the rules can be broken. Originally a hit on Broadway, the current production is showing at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park. How does the medium of an outdoor space differ to a traditional theatre? I think a play or musical for an outdoor theatre has to be “big” in some way. It needs a big heart and big characters, and if it’s a musical, it needs music that can totally envelope you. That way, the setting ends up enhancing the experience. Crazy For You is going to play differently in Regent’s Park than it does in a traditional Broadway or West End theatre, since by nature the outdoor setting will make the whole piece feel all the more vigorous and robust. How long does it take you to write a new piece of work? I generally produce one new work every eight months to a year, though this has been a particularly prolific period lately. Generally, it takes about six months to think the piece through and about a month to write it down. Then of course the piece keeps changing and developing and hopefully getting stronger as it goes through readings, rehearsals, previews and so on. What are your favourite plays or who are your favourite
playwrights? My favourite plays are Twelfth Night, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Henry V1 Part 1, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, She Stoops to Conquer, School for Scandal, The Rivals, The Importance of Being Earnest, Hay Fever and Private Lives. Playwrights are Shakespeare, Goldsmith, Sheridan, Wilde and Coward Your affinity for Shakespeare - particularly his comedies - is evident, and you are currently writing a book on how to educate children on his work entitled How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare. Generally speaking, most children dislike studying Shakespeare in school! Do you think his work is taught badly or the curriculum focuses on the ‘wrong’ plays? Why did you feel the need to write such a book? I think it‘s crucial that children get to know Shakespeare at an early age. I believe strongly that children feel most comfortable with Shakespeare and
learn to really love his work when they memorize passages from his plays. That is the premise of my new book. By memorizing passages we get to know the characters, the plots, the image, the poetry and the meaning of the plays. Lend Me A Tenor is also playing in London right now...you’ve met with a lot of success; do you ever pinch yourself? To what do you attribute your success? I do pinch myself - I’ve been very, very lucky. Also, I work very hard and generally write for 8 to 10 hours a day every day. What are the differences between West End and Broadway theatre... do you have a preference? I love them both equally. The audiences are equally receptive and eager to see theatre. The only difference that I particular love is coming to London to work on my plays, because it’s my favorite city in the world. And I especially love North London!
Crazy for You is playing at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre from 28 July – 10 September. Box office: 0844 826 4242, openairtheatre.com 53

Campaigns Manager London, Dogs Trust
MY DAY My day generally starts at 5am. I get up, put on my dog walking clothes and some walking boots. Luckily, I live in an area surrounded by beautiful woods so it’s a five min trip to get my gang out for their early morning run. Bear, Razz, Cheeky and Rinky know the routine and are usually dancing around ready before I am! Nigel & I amble through the woods with my big girl, Rinky while the others race around exploring new smells. Back from our walk, I check on my other pets - the reptiles and the spider. Spike the iguana has to have his morning tickle on the chin and a ‘mist’ shower before he eats and I make sure to say ‘hello’ and sort breakfast for Buster, my African grey parrot. My role as a Campaigns Manager at Dog’s Trust Head Office is to deliver the key responsible pet ownership messages to communities in Greater London. Together with my Officer and Assistant, I work with councils and the community, to encourage pet owners to train, neuter and micro-chip their dogs via local events and roadshows. We particularly focus on youths in London with big dogs, offering them free microchipping, low cost neutering and opportunities to experience and develop positive dog training techniques, explore their relationship with their dogs and increase their knowledge and confidence. I love talking to people, especially about my favourite subject- dogs. That’s my two favourite things - talking and dogs - and I get paid to do them! dogstrust.org.uk

WILLIAM
William is a 10 year old greyhound that came to Dogs Trust Harefield after being found as a stray and he really needs to find a loving new home. William is friendly with people and likes other dogs when he meets them on walks. He would suit an owner who is at home most of the day or that he can go out with because he gets lonely on his own. He could live in a home with children aged eight upwards, or possibly younger if they are used to living with dogs.

ROMEO
Romeo is a clever dog and has been taught commands in his previous home. He loves to play and is keen on food, although he is very patient and controlled around it. Romeo is a sweet boy that loves attention. He likes walks and does so very well on a harness, but prefers to curl up on a comfy bed! Romeo is happiest on his own with people so would like to be the only dog in the home. He’s looking for a quiet lifestyle and could live with children over the age of 10, or younger if sensible.

PROPERTY ADVICE FINANCE
95% LTV First Time Buyer Mortgages
TWO NEW MORTGAGE OFFER OPPORTUNITY FOR FTBS WITH SMALL DEPOSITS
I
ndependent mortgage advisor John Charcol is now delighted to be able to exclusively offer buyers in England and Wales two very innovative, but also very different, solutions for FTBs with only a 5% deposit. One of these new mortgages requires at least one family member to be involved and has a variable rate of only 3.95% and no arrangement fee. The other requires no family involvement and is a fixed rate of 6.49% until 2015 with a very low arrangement fee of £195. OPTION 1 “Family Offset mortgage has an initial rate of 3.95%, a 0.5% discount off its SVR for 3 or 5 years (Newbury has one of the lower SVRs amongst building societies). There is no arrangement fee and the Early Repayment Charges is only 1% in 3 or 5 years respectively, but unlimited Early Repayment Charges free part repayments are allowed. The maximum loan is £300,000. “The basis of this 95% LTV Family Offset mortgage is that one or two family members must deposit a total of 20% of the purchase price with the lender, thus reducing the net loan from the lender’s risk perspective to 75% because it takes a charge on the savings. OPTION 2 “The other equally innovative 95% LTV FTB mortgage has a fixed rate of 6.49% to 30/4/15. The arrangement fee is only £195 and the early repayment charge is 2% during the fixed rate term, although ERC free overpayments of up to 10% p.a. can be made. The maximum loan is £500,000 and the innovation with this mortgage is the way affordability is calculated. “This mortgage is called the ‘Rent to Buy’ Mortgage because affordability is based on the FTB’s rental payment history, which must cover a period of at least 1 year. The maximum monthly mortgage payment will be whatever rent the FTB has been paying. The ability to pay the relevant amount of rent for at least a year provides robust evidence of a similar ability to afford an equivalent monthly mortgage payment. Your initial mortgage consultation is obligation free. There will be a minimum fee for our mortgage service of £450, of which £150 is payable when you apply, and we will retain the commission from the mortgage lender. Alternatively, you can choose the fee only option which is typically 0.65% of the amount borrowed. The precise amount will depend on your circumstances and mortgage loan amount, and will be discussed and agreed before you make a mortgage application. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON A MORTGAGE OR ANY DEBT SECURED ON IT

LEGAL
HEMA ANAND FROM COLMAN COYLE, GIVES HER EXPERT ADVICE ON ALL YOUR LEGAL PROPERTY QUESTIONS My neighbour and I own both flats in our building and would like to buy the freehold. What should we do? Generally, there are two options available to you and your neighbour: NEGOTIATION One option is to explore if whether or not the freeholder is willing to enter negotiations with you to sell the freehold of the building. The freeholder is not under any obligation to entertain the negotiations but there is no harm in making an informal approach to the freeholder to see whether or not he would be willing to negotiate with you. ENFRANCHISEMENT Another option is that, subject to meeting certain criteria, you and your neighbour may have legal rights to forcefully acquire the freehold interest of your building under the Leasehold Reform, Housing & Urban Development Act 1993. Exercising such legal rights is known as collective enfranchisement. The legislation sets out a detailed process and strict timescales that must be followed in order to successfully acquire the freehold of your building. Owing to the fact that there are only two flats in the building, then both you and your neighbour will need to participate in an action such as this. I am a landlord and need to undertake urgent works to the building. Is it necessary to serve Section 20 Notices and consult with the leaseholders? The Section 20 procedure requires a landlord to consult leaseholders for certain works that will cost over £250 per leaseholder. It is a process that can take several months and involves a three stage process. In order to carry out very urgent works without the need to go through the Section 20 procedure, you will need to make an application to the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal. The Tribunal has the authority, if it is satisfied that it is reasonable to dispense with the requirements of the Section 20 procedure, to dispense with the consultation requirements.
