EDITOR’S LETTER
D
on’t you just love the month of May? All those April showers bring forth May flowers - and flowers are what make life the proverbial garden. The city certainly becomes a brighter place because of them. From humble hanging baskets to attractive little roof gardens, we Londoners really do make hay (or flowerbeds, as the case may be) while the sun shines. And this beauty does not, of course, go unnoticed by the fashion world: our shoot this month pays homage to fashion designers’ great floral tradition every spring (p20).
A HAMPSTEAD THEATRE PRODUCTION
WORLD PREMIERE
Talking of odes to spring, aspiring poets will be interested to know that Benjamin Zephaniah has just finished his time as poet-in-residence at Keat’s House (p10). A pairing of poets that’s not quite so unlikely as it may appear, Zephaniah was charged with bringing Keat’s work to a younger generation and we were super excited to speak with him about it. Read the full interview on page 10. As this is a design issue, you’ll enjoy reading about a dinky office garden shed (p.52), as well as our picnic accessories special (any excuse to ramp up the Jubilee celebrations - p.55). There’s also a preview of the 2012 Clerkenwell Design Week (p.48) - a three-day festival of workshops, presentations and innovative product launches that’s a must for anyone with an interest in design. Foodies will enjoy Gareth Fitzgerald’s review of One Blenheim Terrace (p.36), while I squeezed in a cookery class with the chef at Barnsbury’s Roots N1 restaurant (p.41) - the recipes were delish and no doubt I’ll be attempting to recreate them at home...

LAUREATE OF LIFE Words: Helen Baron NxNW meets literary icon and performance poet Benjamin Zephaniah, fresh from his time as poet-inresidence at Keats House 10
INTERVIEW BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH MAY 2012.indd 10
29/04/2012 18:09
INTERVIEW
P
oetry, as the broadsheets love to tell us, is an artform in decline. We are constantly reminded that more people write poetry than read it, while sales of poetry books have bombed so badly that it’s now next to impossible to make a living from verse. For all our country’s stated love of literature, the widespread belief is that poetry has become a niche interest, beloved only of a dwindling, old-fashioned cultural elite who can find no more productive use of their time. For any who share such opinions, I have two words: Benjamin Zephaniah. It’s quite possible that no individual in modern British literature has bucked quite so many trends – and put paid to quite so many foolhardy assumptions – than the dreadlocked dub poet from Handsworth, Birmingham. Born into a family of mixed Jamaican and Barbadian heritage in 1958, Zephaniah overcame a childhood bedevilled by dyslexia, discrimination and disinterest to become one of the nation’s most recognisable and best loved wordsmiths, and he did it without once compromising the principles that inspired him in the first place. Leaving school at thirteen unable to read or write, Zephaniah nonetheless discovered he had a talent for rhythm and rhyme, and by fifteen he was performing regularly around Birmingham. The style that would make him famous was already taking shape: verbally inventive, politically astute and able to swing from righteous ire to knowing hilarity in the course of a single line. Zephaniah’s gift was human as much as it was poetic, inspiring love for and faith in his personality as much as admiration for his wordplay. It was no surprise when as a youth he decided to take his talent to the capital, where his first volume of poetry Pen Rhythm, was published in 1980. Higher profile live shows, publishing deals and television appearances soon followed, affording Zephaniah the chance to pursue his stated aim: to free poetry from academia and return it to the people, to the streets. Several decades and dozens of published poetry collections, plays and novels – as well as a clutch of hit records, acclaim from Nelson Mandela and one rejected OBE offer from the Queen – later, Zephaniah has just wound up an extraordinarily successful period as official poet-in-residence at Hampstead’s Keats House. A good moment, then, for NxNW to meet the man himself and find out what he made of his recent stint in north London. NxNW: How did the Keats House residency come about? “I turned down the first offer of residency because I get really nervous about that kind of thing. I never know what’s expected of me. So the people at Keats House said, ‘Make of it what you want, we’ll call you a poet-at-large, you’ll be an ambassador for Keats House.’ I love Shelley, and through Shelley I had come to Byron and Keats, so I knew his work a bit. So I thought it’d give me a good chance to connect with the house. “It’s in a really privileged part of London, so the first thing I did was to bring in kids from Hackney and east London and south London, kids who might never usually visit the area. I wanted to open everything up a bit.”
11
INTERVIEW BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH MAY 2012.indd 11
29/04/2012 18:09
INTERVIEW It seems to have worked – for one thing, all the events you organised sold out. “Yeah, I just tried to find new ways to use the house. For example, everyone at some point has sat in their living room and had a really good conversation with their friends. And I was sitting in Keats House one day thinking, ‘You know, Keats must have sat here and talked to his friends about poetry’. So I held an event called ‘Poetry: What’s the Point?’ and I expected three people to turn up – and it was full! “Another time, I invited a group of homeless people from the charity Crisis to come to the house and we listened to their poetry and to my poetry, and we talked about what poetry means and how it can help you to cope. Keats was homeless before he came to Keats House – and that’s what was special about this residency.” It’s an inspiring idea – finding links between the past and the present to add to our understanding of both. At the same time, Benjamin Zephaniah and John Keats appear to be very different artists on the surface… would you agree? “A lot of the so-called ‘dead white poets’ kids learn at school seems boring, but that was one of the things I loved doing at Keats House – introducing Keats’ work to people who might not give it a chance. As for us being different artists… There’s a friend of mine from the United Arab Emirates who is also a poet, and she’s really suffered for her work, she’s been imprisoned for writing feminist poetry and so on. And one day she said to me in passing, ‘You know Benjamin, romantic poets like you…’ “I was shocked, I was like, ‘What do you mean? I’m not a romantic poet’. But she explained to me what she meant, which is that in my poetry I dream of something more, a better world. I don’t believe in art for art’s sake. And I think in that sense there are similarities between Keats and myself, because he had that same kind of vision. He believed that poetry could help to improve things, to improve people’s lives. Which is another reason it’s so sad that he didn’t get much recognition before he died.” You have a long history of political engagement and activism. As a young man just starting out, what gave you the guts to tackle serious issues? “When I started out, what I did was
quite angry, quite political. I wanted to give a voice to the black community, because we didn’t have a voice in those days. There were no black MPs. Although I also had another motive, which was that I worked out that I could make girls interested in me through poetry, or playing with words – which is what I always called it. My point is that I was a bit of a performer even in the playground. “Anyway, when I came to poetry, it was through [the Jamaican freestyle rap tradition of] toasting. So I always had a lot of confidence – and if I got nervous before I went onstage, I’d think about, for example, people in South Africa who were oppressed, who had to endure real hardship. And I’d say to myself, ‘They’re suffering, and you’re worried because you’re shy?’ And my nerves would disappear. “The thing is though, I don’t like to call myself an activist. I think we should all be involved in this stuff. It’s no good moaning about politicians if when the time comes to make yourself heard, you don’t do anything!”
How does all this help in your latest role, as a Professor of Poetry at Brunel University? “I’m devising a course called Poetry in Performance, which hasn’t really been done before. I realise there’s a scene out there and there are people who want to be a part of it but they’re shy, and it’s holding them back. So I’m going to help people not just to write poetry, but to present it to an audience. It’s almost where poetry meets drama.” It sounds like a very positive thing. I take it you disagree with those who think that poetry is doomed? “Well, I realise that it may seem that way to some people. But when I tour, I’m still able to sell out palladiums. It always surprises me: like, who are all these people who have decided to spend their Saturday night listening to a mad poet? But I get so much love and I meet so many people, it’s amazing. It shows you there’s always a hunger for it. It shows you the power of the word.” benjaminzephaniah.com

Zest explores the Phoenix Cinema’s fascinating 100 year history
T
he Phoenix Cinema is one of the UK’s oldest purpose-built continuously-running cinemas, second only to Brighton’s Duke of York’s Picture House. Instantly recognisable by its neon façade, the cinema has, since 1985, been run by The Phoenix Cinema Trust, after being saved from the wrecker’s ball. Now in its 100th year of operation, the Phoenix is celebrating its incredible history through an online exhibition.
EARLY DAYS The cinema was built in 1910 by Premier Electric Theatres. However, the company soon went bust and it didn’t officially
open until 1912, when it was purchased by businessmen who had helped set up the East Sheen Picturedome. The cinema opened as the East Finchely Picturedome in May 1912, with a film about the recently sunk Titanic.
1920S AND 1930S The 1920s saw the cinema change its name to The Coliseum and become the first cinema in the area to screen a sound film in 1929, with Al Jolson’s latest movie, The Singing Fool. In the late 1930s, the Coliseum was transformed to compete with the new chain cinemas opening up. In the Finchley area alone, four new cinemas were opened by chains such 15

as Odeon and Gaumont. These new cinemas were built in modern styles with luxurious interiors and mod-cons, which the 25-year old cinema struggled to compete with so, in 1938, the cinema underwent a transformation, reopening as The Rex with a new modernist façade by Howes and Jackman and an Art Deco auditorium designed by renowned cinema interior designers Mollo and Egan.
THE WAR Thankfully, the Rex made it through World War II unscathed. Instead, it benefited from the national increase in cinema going as people sought information through newsreels and distraction in feature films. In 1942, it was selected as a reception centre for evacuees from coastal towns as part of the German invasion precautions.
ART HOUSE CINEMA From the 1950s onwards, cinemas struggled to compete with TV and other leisure activities, forcing many to close. As a result, The Rex changed its programming policy, offering something different to its competitors. The 1970s saw a change to an ‘art house’ cinema, screening the latest foreign and independent films. This policy was the idea of 23-year old manager Steve Wischhusen, who programmed imaginative double-bills such as the documentary Woodstock with Performance starring Mick Jagger.
PARK HALL PALACE, 1918
THE FOYER, 1974
CINEMA PROGRAMME, 1949
PRESENT DAY In October 1975, the film distributor Contemporary Films, led by Charles and Kitty Cooper, purchased the cinema for £64,500 to act as a showcase for the European ‘art house’ and world cinema films they represented. They changed the name to The Phoenix and introduced the logo which is still used today. Charles Cooper maintained ‘art house’ standards but, by the early 1980s, The Phoenix was losing £20,000 a year. Cooper was ready to sell-up, but with the help of widespread support, he devised plans that would help guarantee the cinema’s future, including a bar-restaurant and a second screen. Through 1984, Greater London Council developed an active interest in supporting the cinema’s survival and this resulted in a £325,000 grant. Since setting up The Phoenix Trust in 1985, the cinema has gone from strength to strength. Through its many transformations, name changes and tumultuous past, the Phoenix has remained an integral part of our cinema history, as well as at the forefront of contemporary film, maintaining its independent and artistic principles throughout. Unique and beloved; this bird is a true British icon. Text adapted from phoenixcinema.co.uk

When did you set up Mitch Clothing? Did you feel that there was a gap in the market for a plus-size clothing store? Mitch Clothing officially opened in January 2012. Mail order catalogues do a marvellous job in stocking for the larger woman, but we felt that there are still a lot of customers who want to try on clothes first before buying - then there isn’t the chore of returning them if they’re not right.
DENISE
‘MITCH’ SWEDE Founder and manager of Belsize Park’s new plus-size clothing store WE LIKED THIS AREA BECAUSE OF ALL THE COFFEE BARS AND RESTAURANTS AS WELL AS THE BEAUTICIANS, HAIRDRESSERS AND THERAPISTS ALONG ENGLAND’S LANE
The store is in Belsize Park, why did you decide to open there and what do you like about the area? We chose the boutique for the location as much as for the size, the store needed to have a large stockroom, spacious changing rooms and seating for partners and family. We also liked this area because of all the coffee bars and restaurants as well as the beauticians, hairdressers and therapists along England’s Lane. This area has a lovely village atmosphere; it’s so close to Primrose Hill too. What is your background in the fashion industry? I worked as a model in the late 60s and early 70s and have had an assortment of jobs in fashion. My last full- time retail position was with Louis Feraud as Manager/Buyer in Harrods. I was there for five years, back when the store still closed on
Sundays, which seems a long time ago! All of my previous experience has been greatly beneficial to my new vocation as shop owner and buyer. I am in the boutique most days as I believe you cannot know what your customers want if you don’t hear and see first hand. What brands do you stock? What do you look for when buying brands/styles? We are stocking fashionable clothing for the plus size woman of today including dresses for smart occasions and separates for a lunch or family get together. We have also started stocking special occasion wear for weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and cocktail parties. In the winter we will be stocking a range of city suits for the more corporate work look. What brands and trends do you currently stock for the Spring/
Summer season at Mitch? We are stocking three types of jeans - Michele, Robell and NYDJ, all with a comforting stretch yet modern in style. We also have Zandra Rhodes jewellery and a collection of beautiful silk Kaftans. Other brands include Q’neel, Joseph Ribkoff, Lucia, Evelin Brandt, Spanx and Anna Scholz. 14 England’s Lane, Belsize Park, NW3 4TG mitchclothing.co.uk

TRIED AND TESTED
HANDS ON Gemma Billington is treated to a traditional Thai massage at Pho Thai
W
hen I lived in Brighton I adhered to a more bohemian lifestyle typical of the average resident, which included yoga classes and a regular Swedish massage. London life has changed this; long hours, commuting, liquid lunches and late nights are replacements for my once healthy habits. With all tried and tested assignments, I deliberately avoid doing too much background research, so that I approach with an objective mind. Upon mentioning Thai massage to friends, however, I was met with a few concerned looks and the phrase, “isn’t that supposed to really hurt!?” Nevertheless, my attitude remained enthusiastic: bring it on. Pho Thai is situated on Goswell Road just behind Angel tube station. Its bustling location contradicts with the calm ambiance once inside and the two-thousand year old therapies on offer, which can alleviate back pain, migraines and even help with ailments such as concentration and energy levels. Interestingly, all staff are trained at temples in Thailand, which adds a particularly authentic edge to the experience and assures me that I’m
(quite literally) in safe hands. My masseuse is friendly, attentive and wickedly funny, and assures me that, despite her miniscule frame, she is ‘very strong’. It turns out she isn’t kidding. Before conjuring-up comedic mental images of being elbowed and trodden on, however, it’s important to realise that although Thai massage can be an intense experience, the aim is to assist the client’s individual needs and gentler therapies can be applied and
adapted to suit accordingly. Sizing-up my requirements and durability, she applies a medium pressure throughout and concentrates on the painful knots in my left shoulder. Though this induces a few eye-watering moments, it feels like a procedure long overdue. The flow of the massage – which is literally from head-to-toe - feels at times relaxing, often stimulating, but always like it’s doing my muscles a world of good. Thai techniques encompass other practices including acupuncture
(through pressure, not pins), yoga and reflexology. My therapist spends a large amount of time on my legs and contorts them into yoga-esque positions, then stretches diagonally across my body, which induces fits of laughter at my incredibly inflexible body’s expense. The notion of being maneuvered and working with my masseuse is entirely new massage territory; it almost feels like a personal trainer session as she works through my body and identifies specific areas that require attention. Though her hands are freakishly strong, they’re sensitive and highly skilled too. It’s amazing how much we take our bodies for granted and, rather than seeking therapies once aches and pains set in, it’s essential to be in tune with and take care of your body from as early an age as possible. My appointment at Pho Thai served as a reminder of this, and I’m determined it will not be a one-off session. Professional, experienced and with a genuinely relaxed and amiable attitude that’s rare in the industry, I couldn’t recommend them more highly. phothai.co.uk, Green Man Tower, 332a Goswell Road, EC1V 7LQ 020 7837 3643

ONE BLENHEIM TERRACE WORDS: GARETH FITZGERALD
N
amed simply after its address, One Blenheim Terrace is just off Abbey Road (close to the Beatles’ Zebra crossing), a few minutes walk from St. John’s Wood or Maida Vale tube station. The Chef Patron, Ed Shaerf, has previously worked at The Ivy, Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck. The restaurant is an interesting space, with the odd nook and cranny and a separate bar area tucked away in a corner. It boasts a very attractive conservatory for outdoor dining and a cigar terrace. The dining area itself feels luxuriously spacious and the quality of the interior decor is outstanding with bold and warm paints throughout. As for the food, we particularly enjoyed the cheese and marmite and sage and onion bread combinations. The amuse bouche which followed was equally delicious and unexpectedly playful – crudités in the style of a
miniature vegetable patch, with very convincing looking ‘soil’ made of hazelnuts roasted in olive oil. It was artistry for the eyes as well as the palate, with a wonderful combination of textures between the vegetables, the top soil and the savoury custard beneath. Our starters and main courses were all presented beautifully, adding to the impression of cutting edge, modern dining. I enjoyed a ‘Cheese & Pickle’ starter; a Winterdale Shaw Cheddar with a “Branston pickle” puree, croutons and pickled vegetables. This was a very good example of the restaurant’s light-hearted twists on retro dishes, a perspective on food which they describe as “style with a bit of cheek and chic”. My companion’s beetrootcured salmon was a delightfully light and refreshing dish, which played with contrasting temperatures, with the “cold” provided by a very interesting vodka granite. My pan-roasted brill came with an excellent cucumber and sweetcorn porridge, a seaweed
foam and a lobster emulsion. The dish had a touch of the flair associated with Blumethal; clever, creative and delicious, but without being pretentious or overcomplicating the flavours. My compansion’s lamb five ways was a delicately presented plate full of rich flavours and a thoroughly wonderful hotpot potato that was the most refined example of traditional comfort food I’ve ever seen. For desserts, we had a prune crumble with a fantastic earl grey ice-cream and salted caramel sauce, and a lemon assiette which included some wonderful macaroons. We left feeling full and happy, and in agreement that One Blenheim Terrace is a major bonus for St. John’s Wood, an area not overly blessed with outstanding and innovative restaurants. The restaurant is also well-known for its brunches and offers appealing mid-week prices on its tasting menu. oneblenheimterrace.co.uk, NW8 0EH, 020 7372 1722 37

oots at N1 has been going for over a year now, dishing up North Indian specialties to the Barnsbury neighbourhood. Their particular brand of Indian haute cuisine favours clean flavours and authentic foods, skilfully presented. And now, for those looking to master the art of Indian cooking themselves, the restaurant will be running classes in the afternoon for groups of six or more. We popped along to one of the classes to make Tandoori chicken and prawns. The great thing about the ingredients
needed is that once you’ve stocked up on spices, you can use the same basic ones time and again and the results are better than any take-away; Roots N1 regularly visit the Indian Spice Shop in Euston for the freshest and largest variety. FASHION: VEJA FOOTWEAR Working with small co-operatives across Brazil, the cool thing about Veja is that they use organic cotton (grown in one of the Northeast’s poorest regions) and wild rubber (the leather is tanned with plant extracts) to create trainers that respect the environment and human rights. Even the shearling linings are ecologically tanned. One of Veja’s aims is to finance tangible development projects concerning health, training and environmental protection. All of this and their trainers are still examples of excellent craftmanship and design. A recent collaboration with French Designer Domino has resulted in some amazing brightly coloured high-tops we can’t wait until they hit the shops in August. veja.fr
FURNITURE: DEADGOOD STUDIO A creative studio set up by directors Dan Ziglam and Elliot Brook, the company aim is to be recognised for producing a collection of 21st Century design classics for style-aware consumers or cutting edge commerical projects. Their designs lean towards the emotive or thought-provoking. “The products we create and the brand we develop must both possess a sustained conviction to qualities such as fun, excellence, precision, craftmanship, taste and innovation and it is through the execution and articulation of these core brand values that we will reach the most discerning audiences.” Elliot Brook, deadgood Director deadgoodltd.co.uk
LAPTOP TABLE A practical mobile workstation that features a two-piece solid core laminate construction. Available in white, black or our hot pick - walnut - laminate.
LOVED UP A fully upholstered chair with deeper wings. Handmade using traditional techniques, featuring solid timber legs and the deadgood trademark ‘Love Button’ detailing. This also comes as a nifty double-seater.

FITNESS Rejuvenating the mind, body and spirit in Tulum, Mexico WORDS: HELEN BARON
I
’d made good on my new year fitness resolutions. Gone were the comfort foods but I still needed to step things up a gear. When a once-in-a-lifetime two-month trip to Los Angeles was confirmed, I saw it as the opportunity I needed to get seriously in shape. One tight, toned Hollywood body coming up... right? Not quite. Without the $1,000-a-session personal trainer, the yoga and running were not enough to get me where I wanted to be. My much hoped-for ‘hot bod’ remained decidedly un-Hollywood. So I did what a lot of women across the pond do when they want to turn up the heat: I went to Bikini Bootcamp.
concern to the locals – intent as they are on conserving natural ecosystems and keeping the waters crystal clear – and resort sizes are therefore limited. “It’s not the Four Seasons,” warns Bikini Bootcamp founder and owner Melissa Perlman on my first day. But then, who wants that? This trip is about the experience, about ridding myself of the pollution of everyday life in the big bad city. The word Amansala is a conjunction of two Sanskrit words meaning ‘peace’ and ‘water’. The small resort’s rooms are right on the beach, with the ocean at your doorstep and the riches of nature spread all around. From the moment I arrive, I can’t wait to get started.
AMANSALA
THE GRIND
Amansala Bikini Bootcamp is based in Tulum, on Mexico’s tourist-friendly Yucatan peninsula. Tulum has some of the best-preserved beaches in the territory but is not without its modern luxuries so is a great base from which to explore what’s become known as the Mayan Riviera. A magnet for bohemians and fitness fanatics alike, there is no shortage of yoga holidays on this stretch of paradise. Eco-tourism is of paramount
Days start at 7am with a brisk walk or run along the beach (the hotel’s three affectionate Labrador retrievers lolloping alongside). A 15 minute ‘body blast’ is followed by a morning excursion or fitness class. After lunch, the afternoon sees you back on the beach – many bootcampers use this time to indulge in a daily massage. We then squeeze in another exercise class at 4pm and a restorative yoga class before dinner.
The schedule and mix of activities strikes a brilliant balance between physical, mental and spiritual rejuvenation. I know I said I wanted a Hollywood body, but I also know how futile it is to punish yourself beyond all enjoyment: you only end up quivering beneath the bed covers as another crack-of-dawn alarm call summons you back to a training regime you’ve come to dread. Fortunately, at Amansala the morning gong is a warm welcome to a positive day. The three daily meals, though simple, are nutritious, fuelling and healing our assorted bodies without pumping them full of nasties. Everything served is low in fat – the ‘desserts’ (one night we are treated to apple flan; on another, a healthier variant of banoffee pie) may be comically miniscule but they’re made all the more gratifying for the sense of shared achievement and camaraderie they help to foster. The attitude among the bootcampers is a kind of ‘we’re all in this together’ Blitz Spirit. The workouts themselves are a lot of fun. From African Grooves classes to Zumba and circuit training, the instructors are brimming with energy – personal trainer Kiya Knight is a 57
TRAVEL BIKINI BOOTCAMP MAY 12.indd 57
29/04/2012 20:32
particular marvel, with energy levels that seem to know no bounds. Kiya specialises in exercises that focus on natural movement and use body-weight as resistance. There’s not a single ounce of fat on her and her motivation is infectious – it’s not about vanity or expectation, it’s about being bodyaware. And it’s not just me who’s feeling it: I’m impressed with the dedication of the other women in my group. Attendance is high for all classes, everyone sticks to the diet (I think it was just me that snuck off for ice-cream on the fourth day) and no one swallows a drop of alcohol before the celebratory drink on our final night.
THE GIRLS The ultimate key to Bikini Bootcamp’s success is the people. Although the camp welcomes men, it’s obviously more popular with women and, during my week is completely femaledominated. My camp buddies are an inspiring bunch of interesting women who have come in search of some much-needed downtime. Two best friends from Texas are here for a girly break where they ‘don’t drink so much we need a holiday from holiday’, while a mechanical engineer is looking for a chance to decompress from a hectic work schedule and the acrimonious end of a relationship. All of the girls are utterly welcoming and as a bit of a tomboy I’m reminded what great fun women’s company is. I’m left to wonder if this is the spiritual power of our
beautiful setting, the nurturing effects of yoga or the fact of everyone having left the quotidian social politics of their home lives at the door. It’s probably a little of all three.
THE RESULT This is the hardest I’ve ever worked in a week – a real benchmark. I’ve made a valiant dent in the bingo wings and I’ll be damned if I let them sneak up on me again. At a ‘closing circle’ to mark the end of our collective adventure, everyone says a few words and a few tears are shed. Even now, two months later, a travelling sisterhood bracelet (a gift from owner Melissa to one of the girls who had remarked how much she liked it) is doing the rounds, making its way to me back in Blighty. It was a blast - from flinging coconuts
on the beach and cycling alongside luscious jungles to watching the hotel’s dogs play gleefully in the surf and swimming in a clear-water cenote. In fact, the girls and I plunged into the cenote, no doubt surprising the man who had been enjoying a peaceful, solitary float, circling him like vultures, asking everything short of his address. He took it gracefully. And it’s that sense of easy-going intimacy that makes Bikini Bootcamp seem like something much more special than simply getting fit in the sun: all kinds of people from all kinds of places, forgetting their everyday worries and simply diving right in, together. A private room for 6-day Bikini Bootcamp will cost $3,799 which includes two massages, plus the group Mayan clay ritual.

Located in the financial district, it’s close to the Embarcadero and Chinatown. hotelvitale.com
There is so much to see in San Fran - try our top 3 tips of alternative things to do… 1. RIDE A CABLE CAR The cable car is synonymous with San Fran and the CityPASS allows limitless rides. There are only 3 trolley lines with the most popular being operating between Powell and Hyde Street.
2. CHINATOWN The largest Chinatown outside of Asia, it’s the oldest and most famous in the U.S. Thanks to the many ornamented houses, shops and eateries the area is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.
3.VISIT ALCATRAZ From the mid 1930’s until the mid 1960’s, Alcatraz was a maximumsecurity prison that housed some of America’s most famous prisoners. Book your Alcatraz tour at least 2 or 3 days ahead of time as tours sell out quickly. 61

TRAVEL WHY HURLEY? This exquisite hamlet is small but perfectly formed. All the archetypal English village staples are covered; two cosy pubs with open fires (the superior of which is to be found, naturally, at The Olde Bell), an inn, a cricket club and a parish church. But the real piece-deresistance is its situation on the River Thames. There is no happier pursuit than ambling – or cycling – along its path, either five miles to Henley, or half that distance to Marlowe. It’s no coincidence that Kenneth Grahame’s pastoral classic The Wind in the Willows, was inspired by the scenery in this neck of the woods (Cookham, to be precise, another nearby small town spilling over with charm) – it summons to mind a departed world of tea parties on the lawn, and waterside larks, and as Ratty would advise, ‘messing around on boats’.
GET THERE: Just 30-minutes from Paddington to Maidenhead, from where a taxi takes about 10 minutes.
UK GETAWAY
Escape to
The Olde Bell, Hurley WHERE TO STAY?
THE ROOMS: Five buildings, including the main inn, a cottage and a barn, make up The Olde Bell. Designed by Isle Crawford (of Soho House New York fame), the room instantly scores highly on our aesthetic check-list, for it speaks of that rare, but wonderful thing: austere cosiness. There is nothing twee about the vast room, and likewise there is mercifully no token ‘artwork’ adorning the plain straw-coloured walls. Instead, there is a big bed, a roll-top bath, two comfortingly rickety mahogany chairs draped in shaggy throws, and Roberts digital radios provide musical accompaniment at bath time.
THE BATHROOM: The real winner is the roll-top bath, but for those who prefer to perform their ablutions in more private fashion, the bathroom is also excellently appointed with fluffy white towels, the usual array of luxury potions, and the tiled walls are of the modishly rectangular (think tube station) variety. A master class in chic simplicity.
Undoubtedly at The Olde Bell, which purports to be the oldest inn in the country (parts of the five-building operation date back to 1135). Indeed, the flawless service, hospitable welcome and inviting warmth (both literal and atmospheric) attest to centuries of innkeeping practice. As you walk in, the pub (a classic, unpretentious country watering hole with flagstones and an open fire) is immediately on the right, while the restaurant (slick, with booths and immaculate 2 AA-rosette winning food) is on the left – a dichotomy which serves the hotel fantastically well. As the ye olde spelling in its name demonstrates, this is an operation well aware of the advantages of its long legacy, but concurrently, exceptionally high contemporary standards are applied throughout. The antiquarian aesthetic is authentic, but there is nothing creaky, draughty or outmoded about anything here. It’s no surprise to learn that just days before us, Kate Moss checked in, similarly retreating from the city.
PRICE TAG: Rooms from £185 to £325 per night; theoldebell.co.uk
THE RESTAURANT: Everything you could wish for. The staff are always friendly and never obsequious, and the room is glamorous enough to indicate that you are in for a treat, but real enough to lack pretension (the side booths are intimate, while the rest is furnished with chunky wooden trestle tables). The food is served up by the talented Warren Geraghty, ingredients are locally sourced, and dishes are generously proportioned, beautifully presented and exquisite. Roast sea perch served with chorizo, sea beets, spaetzle and caper butter is a particular treat, washed down with a robust Douro red. The exemplar of hearty but inventive British cuisine.

LOCAL FOCUS

UP
Sophie Wurr followed her dream to open a local dog-grooming parlour. We find out how she did it... INSPIRATIONS
Why did you decide to go into doggrooming and how did you go about doing so? I recognised a gap in the market for stylish, quality dog products for my beloved mini schnauzer Mr Echo. After a trip to Berlin, where I discovered an amazing dog boutique quite different to anything I’d seen before, I was convinced the idea would be a success and six months of hard-graft later, Hair of the Dog London opened for business. North London was the perfect market for the shop – an artistic, stylish, dog-loving community! What is a typical day at work? Either I am in the office analysing web and shop stock reports, meeting suppliers, preparing for photo shoots or on a buying hunt for new and unique products that fit our ethos. If I am in the shop we have a flurry of regular customers coming in and out which provides a great opportunity to catch up and see our valued four-legged friends. Do you have a favourite breed of dog? Well of course I am biased and I adore my mini schnauzer, but I have fallen in love with the personalities of many of our regular customers across the different breeds. A few that spring to mind are
Italian Spinone, Great Dane and French Bulldog but I honestly just love how each and every dog has his/her own personality. On a personal level we recently fostered and helped rehome an ageing standard Poodle, Orla – she was so aristocratic! Why the emphasis on hand-made, recycled and organic products? I personally believe in looking after our planet and take advantage of a local organic box scheme myself. I have also found that hand-made, recycled and organic products are of much better quality and are on the whole hypoallergenic, which is essential for Mr Echo as he has allergies. Mass-produced products are usually bad quality and look that way too!
FAVOURITE DOG FILM: Growing up I adored Homeward Bound but I also love the bit in 101 Dalmatians where the human owners are compared to their dogs and all resemble one another! FAVOURITE RESTURANT IN THE LOCAL AREA: High Tea of Highgate for the most fabulous cake, scones and selection of interesting tea (almond is a particular favourite). The Red Lion & Sun is very dog-friendly. FAVOURITE BOOK: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: Mr Echo’s long walks in the park, my weekly Abel & Cole fruit and veg box and a glass of Rioja at the end of a long day!
What makes Hair of The Dog different? An approach to grooming that makes the experience enjoyable for our doggie clients. Distinctive, carefully sourced products, hand-made, recycled and organic products, fun and entertaining window displays, exceptional attention to detail in our visual merchandising and a genuinely passionate team of staff. hairofthedoglondon.com, 24 Highgate High Street, N6 5JG 020 8340 4030 65

HISTORY SPOTLIGHT ON THE ROOKFIELD GARDEN VILLAGE
Rookfield Estate, or Rookfield Garden Village, is an architecturally celebrated location of gated, grass verged unadopted roads. Rookfield Avenue N10 was the first developed in 1908 with The Chine following soon after. The Collins family, who bought the land at the turn of the century, followed with Cascade Avenue, Cranmore Way and the delightfully cloistered Rookfield Close (all N10). The architecture is characteristic of the ‘Arts & Craft’ style, with simple, elegant motifs, something which is evident in the house featured above. 72

We are a group of leaseholders in a block of 8 flats considering whether or not to acquire the freehold of our building. Can you highlight the benefits to us? There are a number of advantages for leaseholders to buy the freehold of their building. Generally, you collectively acquire the freehold interest of your building subject to the leases that are already in place. You therefore collectively become the landlord referred to in your leases and are responsible for carrying out the landlord’s obligations for example, to insure, repair and maintain the building. There is a lot to be said for leaseholders taking over the management of a building so as to protect what is usually their most valuable asset i.e. their flat. Often, a leaseholder’s biggest complaint is the choice of managing agent or unreasonable sums that are asked for under the terms of the lease. It follows that by collectively becoming your own landlord and taking over control of the management, there are reasonable chances of reducing costs. If a building is small then you may agree to overlook the day to day management to save on costs. That said, managing a building is a great responsibility and there is a lot of legislation that governs what a landlord should and should not do. Therefore you must make sure that this is taken into account and observed. In addition, it is well known that a leasehold property is as the year of the lease decrease effectively “a wasting asset”. By acquiring the freehold interest of your building, you can in your capacity as landlord agree to extend your leases and reduce the ground rent to a nominal sum. If the lease requires the consent of the landlord to sell your flat or undertake works you can all agree to deal with such requests more cost effectively and maybe open up the development potential, another advantage of acquiring the freehold of the building.

MARKET INSIGHT Introducing Matthew London, Manager of Faron Sutaria, Camden
I
have just joined Faron Sutaria as the Sales Manager in Camden and am extremely excited to be joining the area’s newest and most dynamic estate agency, having witnessed their professionalism and enthusiasm first-hand as a potential applicant. When I first visited the branch I was very impressed by the friendly way that I was greeted, the swift registration of my details and the efficiency with which the team member booked in a time for their manager to visit my flat in Islington to discuss its value. I left the office feeling energised and keen to get moving although I was later told by my
wife to cancel the appointment as she has no intention of moving! My experience showed me that I am joining an already successful and motivated team who know that providing an exceptional service is vital. I am looking to enhance this by contributing the estate agency experience I have gathered over years in the property industry; local knowledge and my professional strength as a qualified surveyor to provide clients with accurate property appraisals. Our Camden office is prominently positioned on Parkway, strategically placed equidistant to the expanse of
Regent’s Park, the heart of Primrose Hill and vibrant Camden Town. The diversity of the area translates into the broad range of properties we are currently marketing from one bedroom flats in newly built developments, larger flats in period conversions, quirky properties in a church conversion, Victorian villas to Georgian townhouses. If you are thinking of moving and would like to discuss the sale and marketing of your property I would be delighted to speak with you. faronsutaria.co.uk 020 7267 7074 114 - 118 Parkway, NW1 7AN 79

We return to the office (did you realize how steep Fitzjohns Avenue is)?? in need of sustenance frequently changing back to attend evening viewings. I take my hat off to the team here; they have risen to the challenge with their usual aplomb and done us proud. More importantly however, we are overwhelmed by the response to date and have increased our target due to the generosity of our sponsors and the amount raised is rising. If I ever had a moments doubt why we are doing this, it was re-affirmed in an instant when a close friend of mine had to be airlifted to the mainland, interrupting her honeymoon (!) due to a sudden deterioration in health. She has been living with cancer for a few years now. In that moment I understood why we are doing it….. The rest of April has been dotted with our dodging the rain drops on appointments (sorry did someone say there is a water shortage)?? and a number of new sale instructions being prepared ready to bring to market early May pending the return of copious pages of energy performance certificates (!), along with our overseeing the design and finish of several refurbishment projects which will be new to the rental market on behalf of the owners overseas.
