EVENT
The three-day event kicks off the summer season with thrilling entertainment both on and off the pitch
three-day event kicks off the summer season with thrilling entertainment both on and off the pitch in what’s deemed as the spiritual home of polo, Hurlingham Park. It's here that the rules of the game were originally formalised in 1875. Over 140 years later, Chestertons Polo in the Park has simplified the rules using the City Polo format, designed to enhance spectators' experiences. The tweaked rules show off the sport’s diversity, with onlookers closer to the action and teams shrunk to three players, promoting a much fasterpaced game.
Rory Heron, Managing Director of Sportgate International, said: “We believed it was important to adapt and improve the format of the tournament to the City Polo rules to make it easier for a growing polo audience to follow. It’s great that The Hurlingham Polo Association support our decision and have certified the rules. “Chestertons Polo in the Park, in the heart of London, is about enjoying a quintessentially English event whilst having fun with friends and family, not about the etiquette and the intricate rules.” Alongside the polo are several popup bars, including the Champagne Lanson Garden and the Mahiki Bar, as well as a luxury shopping village. The 2016 event – the biggest yet – sees the debut of The Great Polo Food Festival, with some of London’s top restaurants including Kurobuta, HIX, Maze Grill, and street food from Smokestak, Born & Raised and Le Bun. Oliver Hughes, Hurlingham Polo Association’s Deputy Chief Executive said: “Chestertons Polo in the Park is a fantastic tournament that has placed the audience at the heart of the event. It is relatively relaxed and informal compared with other polo events, and appeals to some of the world’s leading players. It’s incredibly inviting for anyone looking for a social summer occasion who is new to polo, as the City Polo rules are much easier to follow. However, the sport is still fast-paced and demonstrates the skills of the players involved.”

CHANGER

Introducing the modern day polo event
n the past, polo was regarded as a high-brow sport, where well-heeled guests don their finest clothes and quaff champagne whilst watching ponies gallop up and down a picturesque pitch. But in recent years, Chestertons Polo in the Park has been making waves in producing one of Europe’s largest and most popular polo events, where the ethos is to come as you are. Whether you’re a polo enthusiast or a newcomer, the event is designed around the spectator’s enjoyment. Now in its eighth year, the

trapped in the saddle from the age of seven, George Meyrick has gone on to represent England in two World Cup tournaments. With a handicap of six in the UK, George hopes to bring home the Chestertons Polo in the Park title this year. Q
Q
Your favourite country to play in?
I love playing in England, of course, but excluding the obvious, South Africa is a really great place to play; you’ve got the nice weather and a bit of beach too. A
What inspired you to get into polo?
Both my father and grandfather played, so that’s where my love for the sport came from. We always had horses around but I started playing properly at the Pony Club. A
Q
And was it an instant love for the game?
Yes, definitely. From day one it was something I wanted to pursue as a career. I knew I wanted to play polo full time and I instantly knew it was more than just a hobby. A
Q When did you start playing professionally?
I was 17. I finished my last year of school but by this time it was getting very serious. The plan was to go off and study further, but I needed to concentrate on my training.
Q How does it feel playing polo for your country?
“I knew I wanted to play polo full time and I instantly knew it was more than just a hobby” went off to university, so I did feel like I missed out on that. But at the same time, I’ve gained so much unique experience.
A
Q Do you feel that you missed out on your teen years? A The polo world is relatively small, so you get to know quite a lot of the people involved. In my final two years of school I spent a lot of time in Argentina and then a lot of my friends
Q How many horses have you had and do you have a favourite? A It’s impossible to say. You can use up to 10 in a game, so you can imagine how many I’ve played with in 10 years. I’ve got a couple that have been with me for a long time. They’re very loyal. Q
A typical working day…?
It’s tricky because polo is so seasonal. I’m usually away for six months, so it all depends on where I A
23
Polo_Summer16_GEORGE MEYRICK_SINGLE.indd 23
A It’s always nice to be picked. There is something very special about putting on an England shirt. Q
How is the lifestyle of a polo player?
It can vary so much. You have periods over winter when it's very quiet, to suddenly being flat out, so there’s not a huge amount of consistency. A
Q
How’s the future looking for polo?
Growing, I hope. It’s a lot bigger than it was 10 or 15 years ago so hopefully it will continue getting bigger. I think polo has a very exciting future, especially with the help of events like Chestertons Polo in the Park. A
Q How many years have you been involved in Chestertons Polo in the Park? A This is my fifth year taking part in the event. I love it. It’s something I am always looking forward to in the summer polo calendar.

RULES A
APPEALING
Claim by players for a foul, usually signalled by the furious shaking of sticks above players’ heads.
B
B AC K
Chestertons Polo in the Park has three players in a team, a forward, a midfield and player dubbed the ‘back’.
B AC K H A N D
Usually a defensive play that involves hitting the ball backwards, on either side of the horse.
BALL
White and crafted from plastic or wood, weighing 4.5 oz and 3.5 inches in diameter.
BELL OR HOOTER
This is located off the side of the field and rung by the timekeeper to inform umpires when a chukka (seven minutes of play) has passed. CHESTERTONS POLO IN THE PARK | 2016

Our insider’s guide to the vernacular of polo. Don’t turn and run when your companion points out a hired assassin
Slowing a pony down to allow a safe turn.
C
F
Teams change sides of the pitch only at half time Ω making the game quicker and simpler.
A full-size polo field measures 300 yards x 160 yards. Goal posts are set eight yards apart. Our field is smaller, allowing for prime spectating.
CHANGING ENDS
CHUKKA
There are four chukkas (phases) in Chestertons Polo in the Park matches, each lasting seven minutes with up to 30 seconds of overtime. If during overtime the ball goes out of bounds, hits the sideboards, or if the umpire blows his whistle for a foul, the chukka is over. There is no overtime at the end of the final chukka unless the score is tied.
D
D I VO T S
Turf kicked up on the pitch by ponies’ hooves.
E
EQUIPMENT
In terms of equipment, hard helmets are compulsory, while face-guards, kneepads, whips and spurs are optional for the players.
FIELD
G
G OA L
When the ball fully crosses the line between the goal posts at any height, a goal has been scored regardless of who hits it through (including the pony).
G OA L J U D G E
Appointed to signal a goal (flag over head) or no-goal (flag under waist).
H
HANDICAP
Players are rated on a scale of -2 to 10 (the higher the better), which refers to their playing ability. The team handicap is the sum of its players’ handicaps and in handicap matches of six chukkas, the team with the lower handicap is awarded

the difference as goals at the start. For matches other than six chukkas, the side with the lower handicap is gifted a number of goals as a head start: the difference in the teams’ handicaps are multiplied by the number of chukkas and divided by six. Fractions count as half a goal. So, a 26-goal team would give a 24-goal team a 1.5 goal start in a four-chukka match.
H I T- I N
Should a team hit the ball over the opponent’s back line during an attack, the defending team resumes the game with a free hit from the back line where the ball went over.
H I G H G OA L
Teams with a total handicap from 17-24 goals. This the highest level of official tournament polo played in the United Kingdom.
HOOK
The move whereby a player uses their mallet to block or interfere with an opponent’s swing by
hooking the mallet of the other player with their own. A player may only hook if he/she is on the side where the swing is being made or directly in front of or behind an opponent.
H PA
(The Hurlingham Polo Association) This is the governing body of the game in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The governing officials are called stewards and should not be confused with club stewards, who guide and assist members at the club.

LINE OF THE BALL
‘Crossing the line’ is the most recurrent foul in polo. The line of the ball (the imaginary line along which the ball travels) represents a right of way for the 25

A player’s appendage, with a shaft crafted from bamboo cane or graphite composite and a head made from a hard wood. Polo sticks range in length according to the height of the pony ridden.
M I L L I O NA I R E ’ S SHOT
A shot at the ball by an inexpert player, when the ball is close to the legs of the pony or beneath its belly. A high degree of skill and timing is required for both shots to avoid injuring the pony. It is assumed that only millionaires with many ponies can afford to have one out of play due to injury.
N
NEARSIDE
The left-hand side of the pony.
NECKSHOT
A ball that is hit from under the pony’s neck.
O
O U T- O F- B O U N D S
When a ball goes over the sideboards, it is considered out-of-bounds. The umpire then tosses the ball between the two teams lined up at the point at which it left the field of play.

occurs, or at his discretion. During a game, a player may call time-out only if he has broken a key piece of tack or has been injured. Time-out is not permitted for changing ponies or for replacing a broken stick, though a player may do so at any time.
TREADING-IN
The replacement of divots of turf caused by the ponies' hooves during play. The spectators enter the pitch to tread-in the divots at half time.
U
UMPIRES
Mounted referees.
RINGER
A player or pony that performs above expectation.
PONIES
(Penalty 6) This is awarded when a defending player hits the ball over his own backline. The free shot is taken 60 yards from the backline, opposite the point where the ball crossed, like a corner in football. No defender can be closer than 30 yards.
Although labelled ‘ponies’, players ride horses of 14.2 hands and above, with most preferring the Argentine Criollo breed, pure or cross thoroughbreds. Important qualities are speed and stamina, as are temperaments responsive to the rigours of the game. There is no height limit for the pony, though most stand between 15 and 15.3 hands. A pony alone can account for as much as 80 per cent of overall performance.
POSITIONS
Each of the three team members take on a significant role. Players frequently change positions, but always endeavour to return to their original assignment.
R
R I D E- O F F
Two riders may make contact and drive each other from the line to prevent the other from striking the ball. While it is primarily intended for the ponies to do the pushing, a player may use his body, but not his elbows.

hen it comes to rules, sports are much of a muchness. Governing bodies oversee the regulations, for instance the RFU for rugby and FIFA for football. Polo is no different; the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) is the governing body for polo in the UK and Ireland, keeping an eagle eye on all ruling affairs. Hurlingham is where the very first official legislation was laid in 1875, the year that followed the first match ever played on Hurlingham soil in 1874. Hurlingham has issued the rules and regulations of the game ever since, earning the organisation its reputation as the ‘grandfather’ of modern polo. For 65 years the club was the polo headquarters for Britain and her empire. Sadly, the club was badly bombed during World War Two, with 27 bombs and a landmine falling in the grounds. The eastern end was damaged, including the loss of its crystal dome. At this stage, part of the polo grounds were leased for use as allotments from 1942, and in 1951 the polo grounds were compulsorily purchased by the LCC for housing development and a public park. However, the organisation signed an exclusive deal in 2008 to reinstate the grounds at Hurlingham Park, bringing polo back to its British roots. The HPA is keen to promote public awareness of polo and consequently works to make the sport more accessible. There are coaching qualification programmes and the HPA is responsible for arranging fixture lists and handicap assessment for all players.
CHESTERTONS POLO IN THE PARK | 2016
Polo_Summer16_fairplay.indd 28
Grass-roots polo begins in the Pony Club and Junior HPA. It comes as no surprise that most of the UK’s 50 best players formerly played Pony Club polo, as did the entire England team in the 2010 Coronation Cup. The same can now be said for the future players of British polo rising through the ranks of the Pony Club and Junior HPA. Encouraging interest across Great Britain, the HPA offers grants to the Armed Forces, the Pony Club, schools and universities, as well as assisting other clubs to improve the standards of their grounds. The HPA also runs a bursary allowing players of varying standards and ages to play overseas. Full playing members of UK and Ireland based clubs automatically become associate members of the HPA. As a player and horse-owner, a member is subject to the rules and regulations of the HPA, and allocated a handicap according to their abilities. As such, an individual is unable to play at an affiliated club without being a member of the HPA. The HPA produces an annual yearbook that lists clubs, players, fixtures and tournaments. The arena handbook is obtainable from any arena-playing club, and rules are available to download on the website. The rules for Chestertons Polo in the Park are ratified by the HPA. For those interested in finding out about learning to play this fantastic sport then the HPA have a list of accredited instructors on their website

GLOBA L International Polo exploded onto the world stage in 1886 Wo r d s OLIVER HUGHES
T
he first International Polo match is believed to have been played at Dieppe in 1880 between England and France, with the English side winning by eleven goals to none. However, it was in 1886 when International Polo really took off. It was proposed at a dinner in Hurlingham that a Hurlingham team should visit America to play against the Westchester Polo Club in Newport. The first game was played on 25th August 1886 with the second just a few days later on the 28th. Both games resulted in resounding victories for the British team, by a margin of 12 goals in the second match. Six months after these games, Tiffany and Co. produced the trophy they had been commissioned to make. The trophy was named the Westchester Cup. It was not until 1900 that the Americans felt that their skills had progressed enough to challenge once more for the Westchester, but once again they went home empty handed. A similar fate
befell them in 1902 and it was only in 1909 that an American team were able to lay their hands on the coveted trophy. With one exception, in 1914, the English side would not regain the trophy until 1997, when it was played for at Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, thus beginning a streak that continues to this day. Throughout this time, England played many other international matches. This included a game against Australia, played in Melbourne in 1899, with each side winning a match apiece. Polo had also come to the Olympic Games in 1900 and it would be contested there four more times before the Second World War intervened. The Olympic tournaments of 1900 and 1908 were unusual due to the difficulties of organising international polo matches. In 1900 the competition consisted of three teams of mixed nationalities and a Mexican team. The tournament was won by a team of English and American players. For the London Olympics in 1908, there were only three teams, all of whom were British. However, for the 1920, 1924 and 1936 Olympic Games there were four teams in each tournament,

with Great Britain winning the first and Argentina the other two. It is interesting to note that in Berlin in 1936, Argentina defeated Great Britain by 11 goals to none for the gold medal; the tide of polo talent had inexorably turned. The Olympic Trophy itself resides at the Hurlingham Club, having been presented by the club to the International Olympic Committee with the stipulation that it should be returned to the club after four years if not in use. After the interruption of war, polo was slow to restart in England. It was thanks to the efforts of a few, notably Lord Cowdray, that it restarted at all. In 1949 he led a team of English players to Buenos Aires to play in a

tournament with Chile, Mexico, the United States and two Argentine teams, one military and one civilian. They acquitted themselves well, having not played that speed of polo for ten years or more, and managed to defeat the Chileans before being defeated by both Argentine teams. Today, the Coronation Cup is the pinnacle of International Polo. Originally presented by the Ranelagh Club in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V, it was contested by the winners of the Hurlingham, Ranelagh and Roehampton Championships and the winners of the Inter-Regimental Tournament. It fell into abeyance in 1939 but was revived in 1971 as an annual match to be played between
For the London Olympics in 1908, there were only three teams, all of whom were British
England and different visiting teams. It is now the centrepiece of the English polo season and the highest level of polo outside of Argentina. With the best players and ponies on display in the beautiful setting of Windsor Great Park, England will, on 23rd July, take on a team representing The Commonwealth. This is a fitting tribute to HM The Queen as we celebrate her 90th year. She and the rest of the Royal Family have shown so much support for polo over many decades. he Hurlingham Club in Fulham has long been a popular private club, thanks to its top of the range sporting facilities, its loyal members, its prime riverside location and of course, the iconic Hurlingham House. The Hurlingham Club is also the home of British polo, bringing the sport to the attention of the world and the privileged social sets of Victorian and Edwardian Britain. Today, the club continues to offer excellent sporting facilities and a varied social calendar. Hurlingham Park, one of the club’s original polo fields, is now a public recreational and sporting field and once a year, in June, it hosts the world’s largest three-day polo event in partnership with The Hurlingham Club, Chestertons Polo in the Park. This new form of fast-paced polo has revived the tradition of the game at Hurlingham, dating back to 1874. However, there’s much more to Hurlingham than polo. The history of the house and The Hurlingham Club extend back to the 18th century. CHESTERTONS POLO IN THE PARK | 2016

EARLY HISTORY
U
ntil the 18th century, this portion of the Fulham riverside was mainly open fields and orchards, with very few buildings between the Bishops Palace and the village of Broomhouse. The land, known as Hurlingham Field, was part of the manor of the Bishops of London, dating back to before the Norman Conquest in 1066. The Bishops Palace was used as a home for the Bishops of London for over 900 years until the 1970s. Because of its isolation, Hurlingham became the site of a ‘pest-house’ for sufferers of the plague. It is believed that the area near the lake was used as a plague pit for the hundreds of dead bodies. From around 1670, the pesthouse was used as accommodation for the poor. These were the only buildings in the area until the mid 18th century, when an act allowing bishops to grant leases, introduced by King William and Queen Mary in 1693, began to have an impact on the area. Wealthy Londoners looking to escape the crowded and polluted conditions of the city took advantage of these new leases and started building large country houses. 32

he first house to be constructed on Hurlingham Field was for Dr William Cadogan, a successful physician and Governor of the Foundling Hospital, who leased nine acres in 1760 to build a ‘cottage’, which is the core of today’s Hurlingham House. When Cadogan passed away in 1797, the lease for Hurlingham was taken by John Ellis, who transformed the small country house into the neo-classical mansion that you see today. In 1867 it was bought by Richard Christopher Naylor, a wealthy banker, who gave permission to a Frank Heathcote to establish pigeon shooting at Hurlingham, and within a couple of years the Hurlingham Club had been established.
A POPULAR VENUE
A
s a pigeon shooting club, Hurlingham attracted many high-profile members, but it was the introduction of polo that saw the club rise to become one of the most popular places to visit. This, combined with the club’s royal patrons, such as the Prince of Wales and other members of high society, ensured its prominence. Over the years, new sports facilities such as tennis courts were added, as well as an ornamental lake and flower gardens. The club became a popular spot to watch polo and meet friends, dine out, drink tea and listen to music.
POLO AT HURLINGHAM
S
ince 1874 The Hurlingham Club has been synonymous with polo and even today, the Hurlingham Polo Association remains the controlling body for the sport. The first recorded game took place in Persia in 600BC, but the game was only discovered by British tea planters in India in the 1850s. It quickly gained popularity amongst the military and came over to England for the first time in 1869. The first game played at Hurlingham was in 1874 between the Royal Horse Guards and the Monmouthshire Polo

lthough The Hurlingham Club was most famous for its connection with polo, it offered its members a range of other sports: the club remains the venue for the Croquet Association’s tournaments; the first game of lacrosse was played on the polo ground in 1876; tennis was introduced to Hurlingham in the 1880s and soon became one of the club’s core sports; a nine-hole golf course was opened in 1894 and an 18-hole course was laid out in 1925.

Club. The game drew a large crowd of spectators, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. The rules of the game were formalised and drawn up by The Hurlingham Club Committee and published in 1875. The club became the headquarters of polo for the British Empire and was the location for major competitions. In 1908, the club presented a Challenge Cup to the winning polo team at the London Olympics.
he Hurlingham Club has long held close ties with the military and was made available for servicemen and servicewomen throughout both wars. During WW2, around 450 officers from the army and Royal Air Force were quartered at Hurlingham. The close proximity to the river put Hurlingham at risk and it endured 27 bombs and a landmine. Following the end of the war, in 1946, the London County Council sought a compulsory purchase of the estate. The trustees managed to negotiate to save Hurlingham House and the surrounding buildings, but both polo grounds were lost.

A typical working day...? Waking up around 8am and going to the stables to ride and check the horses. Then straight off to the gym, a good healthy lunch, and if I have no polo in the afternoon I go and watch games around the area. Basically, loads of riding and staying fit.
oming from a family of polo players, Juan Cruz Guevara takes no prisoners on the field. And with over 20 years' experience as a professional polo player, he has established himself both in Argentina and in the UK, and owns a total of 30 horses. Juan plays a lot of medium goal polo in the UK, and also competes in Dubai's beach polo championships. Q

How is the lifestyle of a polo player?
It’s really great for a single guy. There’s loads of travelling and a great social life. You’re meeting new people all of the time. A
“I think that polo needs more events like Chestertons Polo in the Park” missed out on anything because I’ve loved every minute of the travelling and playing polo professionally. Q How many horses have you had and do you have a favourite? A I have had a lot of horses in my life and throughout my career Ω over 50 for sure Ω and no matter what people say, there is always a favourite one. My current favourite is called Nina.

What inspired you to get into polo?
It was definitely my love of horses from a very young age. As I got older, I thought it was great to make a career out of something I loved so much, combining horses with a fast and very exciting team sport.

Q
How’s the future looking for polo?
I think that polo needs more events like Chestertons Polo in the Park, so more people can fall in love with the speed and dynamic of this great sport. We need to get polo on television and get more sponsors on board. A
Q How many years have you been involved in Chestertons Polo in the Park? A I have played in the event from the very beginning and have been lucky enough to have won it once before, playing for Abu Dhabi.

will play host to top polo players at the world’s largest beach polo event. The annual championships return for a thrilling weekend of polo, ponies and parties as the event takes pride of place overlooking Poole Harbour and Old Harry Rocks. And if beach polo is a sport you would like to add to your annual sporting calendar, Watergate Bay’s Polo on the Beach event will return to celebrate its 10th anniversary in May 2017. Packed with
more ponies, pros, polo and partying than ever before, this is a must-attend event if you’re not hitting the sands of Dubai or Miami for your beach polo fix next season. Beach polo welcomes a much younger, sociable crowd and is played on a smaller field. Much like Chestertons Polo in the Park, the rules of beach polo are altered to give spectators a more personal and exciting experience. 39

ST JAMES COLLECTION
LA M A RTI NA Introducing the Spring/Summer 2016 look inspired by a young Churchill
L
a Martina reveal their second season collaborating with British tailor, Timothy Everest MBE, with the sophisticated St James Spring/Summer 2016 collection. The SS16 range picks up where the debut collection for AW15 left off, moving on from the style of young Winston Churchill as a British Officer and looking towards his sartorial evolution as he progressed through the ranks of the military and enjoyed many sporting pastimes, most famously polo which is at the heart of the La Martina brand. Drawing inspiration from this influential time in Churchill’s life, the collection is stripped back for the warmer months featuring unstructured and half-lined jackets in soft linens and cottons. Timothy’s close attention to detail, a key aspect of any tailor’s life, is visible throughout. Subtle touches include stitching details and intricate pocket designs to incorporate elements of traditional bespoke tailoring in a contemporary way. Selected lightweight fabrics are traditional with a twist, featuring an abundance of summery colours in linen and cotton.
The SS16 St James collection has three key looks, each inspired by a spell in Churchill’s life.
‘ T H E I M P E R I A L’ look is styled around the ‘Imperial Mac’, a staple piece in the collection inspired by Churchill’s time in the Imperial Yeomanry. This classic mac stands alongside tailoring pieces such as the ‘Oldham Jacket’, a nod to his political beginnings at ‘The Oldham Constituency’.
Timothy’s close attention to detail, a key aspect of any tailor’s life, is visible throughout
‘ T H E W O O D S T O C K ’ look harks back to the sartorial elegance of ‘traditional sportsmen’ in the 1890s. Named after Churchill’s birthplace in Oxfordshire, it focuses on one of his favourite pastimes – polo. The ‘Woodstock Double Breasted Jacket’ in soft linen references the traditional polo attire that Churchill would wear but modernised with subtle tailoring nuances. 61
Polo_Summer16_LA MARTINA FEATURE.indd 61
‘THE MARLBOROUGH’ look has been built around young Churchill’s aristocratic familial roots of ‘The Dukes of Marlborough’. This look epitomises the style of his early years, with a modern twist on a ‘Safari Jacket’ to bring the overall aesthetic up-to-date for 2016. The look is smart and refreshing.

hen we speak about polo, one immediately pictures the perfect English countryside setting. However, the growth of the sport now sees the game played in some very exotic places around the world. Jnan Amar Polo Resort in Marrakech has become the new polo hot-spot destination. Only a three and a half hour flight separates London from this glamorous polo haven. Jnan Amar Polo resort is an idyllic oasis of over 120 acres, located just 20 minutes from the centre of Marrakech. The club has the most stunning views and beautifully landscaped gardens, and is perfectly set so that the Atlas Mountains look as if they were its personal backdrop. Founded by polo patron Amar Abdelhadi, the Jnan Amar Polo Resort was created with the vision of establishing the sport of Kings in Marrakech. With the increase of luxury hotels, such as King Mohammed VI’s own Royal Mansour, the arrival of polo to the city’s social life was the obvious path to follow. The impeccably manicured polo fields have been designed in partnership with Sotogrande’s Santa Maria Polo Club, enabling the resort
to host world-class polo competitions. Surrounding the polo fields, there will be a Ritz-Carlton hotel, 85 RitzCarlton branded luxury residences and a members' Polo Clubhouse. Polo’s unique lifestyle together with Jnan Amar’s beautiful landscapes and the historic surroundings of Marrakech are an explosive combination hard to resist for the polo aficionado eager to continue playing after the European polo season finishes. A lot has happened since Amar Abdelhadi had his first vision of the future for this land. Since the club’s foundation, the Jnan Amar Polo Resort has been host to the most exciting international polo events such as the British Polo Day and has sponsored events such as Prince William's Tusk Foundation. Its polo team has won international competitions such as the St Tropez Cup and it has welcomed teams of the caliber of the Moroccan Royal Guard, and His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Another aspect that makes Jnan Amar Polo Resort such a distinctive destination is the very strong charitable ethos under which it is run. When, in 2013, Eve Branson contacted Amar Abdelhadi asking for support for her foundation, it meant the beginning of a very strong partnership. Since 2005 the 73

Eve Branson Foundation has been supporting education, employment and healthcare initiatives in the rural villages of the High Atlas Mountains. The Eve Branson Foundation partnership with the resort has been able to raise over £150,000 to contribute towards this purpose. This strong commitment to the community has led Jnan Amar Polo Resort to start its own programme: The Niños. The Niños consists of complete polo training for children from under-privileged backgrounds of the Berber villages with the aim of becoming professional polo players, offering them the opportunity of a different future. Although it is not a formal charity yet, the club is currently helping six Niños and is looking to expand the programme next season, once its 30 new horses arrive from Argentina. If you are thinking of booking your next holiday or polo match at Jnan Amar Polo Resort, then please also consider this. The club is now working on developing the Angel’s Program, which means that for each new member, the club will get a spot for another Niño, meaning that with your membership you can become an active part of this amazing project. With the Moroccan Polo Open being an established tournament in the calendar, Jnan Amar Polo Resort is getting ready for another exciting season, filled with tournaments, events and polo aficionados travelling from all over the world. We are reminded that Winston Churchill’s words about the sport of kings: “A polo handicap is a passport to the world", remain timelessly relevant in the world of polo. The polo club currently offers polo lessons for all levels from October to April led by Argentine polo professional Pablo Casero. For membership and sponsorship opportunities, please contact:
