n the summer, there’s no place better than London. Fact. I’m pretty confident that the same goes for the build up. Maybe it’s because we are so sun-deprived, after months of hibernating indoors away from blustery winds and freezing conditions, that the first glare of sun in our eyes and the gentle warmth of it on our skin perks us up immediately. I’ve already cracked out my sunglasses and am seriously considering unpacking my summer wardrobe because, in London, warm weather does, quite literally, spring up on us. As April starts to tease us with warmer weather, everything heads al fresco, come rain or shine. To prepare for the skimpier clothing season we trialed an expert treatment to firm and lift our bottom, courtesy of Nuriss skincare, page 34. If you’re looking for a longer lasting fix, head to page 38 where we've tested the best hot yoga classes in Central and Southwest London to get everything nice and pert in time for those bikinis. On another note, South London boy Jason Flemyng, of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and The Missing fame, opens up about parenthood, pub life and his perpetual love of Putney, on page 16. While acclaimed chef Ken Hom travels to Macau and discovers the culinary delights of the city, page 58.u Enjoy and Happy Easter!

‘A masterpiece of confusion and pure comic bliss,’ this Noël Coward play turns the rom-com on its head. In a story about a couple falling in love five years after divorcing, audiences witness two soulmates figure out whether or not they should stay with their new spouses, or walk away for true love. While their story may be no honeymoon, it is a painfully accurate depiction of modern relationships. Just brilliant. Ravenna Road, SW15; putneytheatrecompany.org.uk

Great Heights En plein air artist Paul Lewin talks cliffs, cityscapes and danger Wo r d s E l i z a b e t h H u t t o n

n Plein Air painter Paul Lewin has a bit of a reputation. His daredevil mentality and determination to paint from great heights makes both his work and life beyond interesting. Growing up in Stockport, Lewin always had a connection with, and a passion for, impressive landscapes, so it was unsurprising when he fell in love with Cornwall’s rugged terrain. Once graduated, Lewin moved down south and honed his skills in the vast expanses of the Cornish moorland and sea which, 25 years later, he still finds inspiring. After choosing his location, Lewin has been known to lay flat, through
all weather extremes, on the edge of a precipice to create his signature vertigo paintings. For the past year however, Lewin has swapped cliff edges for skyscrapers, climbing to the highest points of London to create his latest body of work, entitled Vantage Points, for Webbs Fine Art gallery in Battersea. A complete change of scenery but one that makes complete sense to Lewin, as he sees it, ‘The epic urban landscape of London is not too dissimilar to where I grew up. But I was particularly inspired to paint the Thames, Serpentine or Hyde Park, areas closest nature. They have a similar wild attraction for me but without being surrounded by the sea.’ While close friends and supporters have helped Lewin gain access to the
15 B&C_April15_WEBBS_GALLERY.indd 15
Montevetro building in Battersea and the Juxon building adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral, Webbs gallery negotiated with many top London hotels, including the London Lancaster, to get him up on to their roofs. The result is spectacular. Using a wide range of colours, the paintings take on a soft, dream-like depth while his direct and urgent style results in extremely realistic images. However, his mesmerising work can come at a price. Taking risks on a regular basis, Lewin has come close to death many times. When asked what the most dangerous place he’s ever painted was, he told us about a cliff that collapsed just two minutes after he had been painting under it – ‘It makes you think’. So why now attempt to capture the city instead? ‘Well, I really enjoyed the challenge of painting from rooftops in central London. Liz Cranwell-Ward (who runs Webbs Gallery) has gone to great lengths to make my painting trips to London as rewarding as possible. I enjoy the almost village like community of Battersea and Clapham, it always makes for a welcome change to Lands End, even if I am always glad to see the sea when I get home!’

orn and raised in Putney, Jason Flemyng's heart Ω despite having travelled the world for his craft Ω remains in London. Moving down the road from where he was born, Flemyng now lives with his wife Elly and two young sons Noah and Cassius in Clapham. “I quite like going down Northcote Road and picking up an orange and the shop owner saying, ‘No charge mate, it’s yours, it’s yours,’” smiles Flemyng. “People know me here, they knew me when I used to serve drinks in a bar in South London, and now they know me a little bit better. I feel comfortable here, it works for me.” Flemyng's decision to stay put hasn't come from a lack of wanderlust: his job has seen him collect a myriad of passport stamps over the years, including regular stints in Tinseltown. His portfolio of work, which is the reason he's had to travel back and forth to Los Angeles, is impressive. Most recently as the character Mark Walsh in BBC One's The Missing. But his biggest film feat to date is still as one of the leads

in Guy Ritchie's cult classic Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, as small time criminal Tom. This led to the sequel Snatch, which also had monumental box office ticket sales. Flemyng's career continued on an upward trajectory seeing him star alongside Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Flemyng admits, that while he is a dedicated South London boy, his acting agenda had always been “geographically motivated”. He explains, “There was time, when I was young, when I didn’t have kids, where I’d prefer to do a bad film in India than a good film anywhere else.” This unsated love of travel saw him turn his heel
on Hollywood and head East. “They’d say, ‘Have you read the script?’ and I’d say, ‘No, but where’s it shooting?’ ‘Rajasthan’, they'd say, and I’d say, ‘I’m in!’” His love of travel doesn't come without sacrifices; “I’m off to do a HBO series and the only dilemma about that is I’m not going to be with my boys at home. It’s in LA so I’m going to have to work out the logistics of seeing my family enough while I’m working.” Flemyng refuses to be pressured into relocating Stateside. “As much as I love the mecca of film making Ω you’re an actor and at one point or another you’re gonna want to go to America; if you’re a coal miner you’re gonna end up in Yorkshire, you know? I know friends who’ve enjoyed it there but for me it’s not the right thing. I want to go to LA and then come home.” Flemyng's family commitments, and personal experience growing up, has led to more alturistic work, specifically with children’s charity Barnardo’s. “Even though it was a struggle for my mum bringing up two boys on her own, I realise how important it was to have a loving parent and someone who supports you.” Flemyng was

young when he realised he wanted to be an actor: “It was never dealt with like trying to fly to the moon. My mum was actually like, ‘If that’s what you want to do, that’s what you want to do.’ I was a very lucky boy and I had the support to do what I needed in order to start acting.” His stage debut was pretty big for a 10-year old – playing the Tin Man in a school production of The Wizard of Oz – which only fuelled his love for the craft and pushed him to go on to study drama at the prestigious National Youth Theatre and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. And it was with the help of his raw talent and supportive mother that Flemyng continued on to the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company for a further three years. With a comprehensive filmography under his belt, Flemyng acknowledges that his success is in part down to self-belief and a conviction that this career path was the one for him, which was fed by the support he received as when young. Flemyng realises that this is a luxury not all children are afforded: “People are impatient, with the long term unemployed for not achieving what they could achieve. They don’t understand that it has to start a lot younger
to get that step through the door. Getting a job in Tesco can be a massive climb for some people because of their backgrounds. I understood that and I thought Barnardo’s were answering those questions and dealing with it all at a much earlier stage.” Flemyng goes on to say that, “For me, it felt a bit like karma. Whether that’s wrong or right, I feel that the work I do for Barnardo’s is me giving back for the life I’ve had.” Flemyng's talent and passion goes beyond acting and children, as once upon a time he was the landlord of his very own pub, The Duchess in Battersea. “It was an amazing time and a great experience,” he reflects. Flemyng’s rivalry with fellow actor-turned-pubowner Guy Ritchie was well documented. And while there have been other famous pub landlords – Piers Morgan and Sir Ian McKellen to name but
19 B&C_April15_JASON FLEMYNG_USE.indd 19
a few – the humble actor had a trick up his sleeve to prove that he was the ultimate celebrity publican. “We did our quiz really well and Time Out voted it the best pub quiz in South London,” he said with pride. “It involved my wife going around the pub in an obscure football team shirt with the badge covered up and a tray of teas for punters to guess what type of tea it was...All sorts of fun and games,” he grins. Flemyng’s sense of humour is infectious, and is something he tries to take to the office, no matter how challenging the role. Take the tense eight-part series The Missing: “It’s heavy. My natural instinct is to laugh so I kept opening cupboards saying, ‘I found him, he’s here!’,” says Flemyng, admitting, “It didn’t always go down so well with the crew…” In fact, when The Duchess was his, Flemyng’s quizmaster reputation preceded his acting status. “I was doing the premiere for Stardust in Los Angles and one of the pub punters asked, ‘Where’s Jason?’ ‘Oh, he’s in Los Angeles…’ and he went, ‘oh, does he have a pub quiz there as well?’ They said, ‘he’s an actor mate!’ and he said, ‘Oh I never knew, I thought he ran the pub!’,” laughs Flemyng. The actor might no longer reside over the Battersea landmark, but he’s as in love with London as he's ever been. “I think if I was to be asked my favourite place in the world, it would probably be Richmond Park, it’s beautiful. It’s where I proposed to my wife,” Flemyng muses. The park has a breathtaking view of St Paul’s Cathedral, which is why it’s no surprise Flemyng keeps returning for both romance and running. “Although it’s not ‘south’ south, it’s still this side of the river,” he grins.

WAIST NOT WANT NOT Wo r d s v i o l e t n e y l o r - l e y l a n d
’m not beating around the bush - I have become addicted to I Keeping up with the Kardashians. Like a large minority of people, I’m now obsessed with Kim and Chloe’s awesome bottoms, which give the illusion of particularly teeny waists. Although irritatingly, and in Kim’s case especially, these girls do have tiny waists. Gah! Unfortunately my Latino-physique is a far-off dream. Yet, while some lunatics pop off to their local surgeon for implants to create the perfect waist-to-bum-ratio, I sit here wondering (when there’s a cheaper, more stylish, less mentally deranged and what’s more REVERSABLE solution) why?! They’d evidently never heard of waisttraining: shrinking your waist by regularly donning a corseted garment, which you gradually tighten. Bizarrely, despite having co-designed a corset range, it never occurred to me that anyone other than Burlesque artists would do this. So, I decided to try it – well my version, which didn’t include going to the gym in one (like Kim). Wearing a corset for three consecutive evenings, it appeared I had lost three-quarters of an inch around my waist, not only this but it actually looked smaller. I can’t vouch for this method’s lasting effects or whether success was due to being unable to eat as much dinner, but it worked. So here are my three favourite corsets – the Violet’s Box Nude Victorian overbust £295, the M&S Collection Firm Control Waist Sculpt Panelled Waspie £25, and the Chantal Thomass Secret d’ Alcove Basque , £395 from Petis Bisous. u ● V I O L E T ' S B OX by Violet Naylor-Leyland

woman’s behind is a sensitive For those of us not blessed A topic. (or burdened) with a derriere of Kim Kardashian proportions, bikini season can be a frightful concept. So considering summer is an inevitability, Nuriss Skincare and Wellness Centre is here to offer some ass-istance. And the state-of-the-art health clinic’s Perfect Peach Bottom Toning treatment is the solution. Led by skin expert Dr. Anita Sturnham, the TV doctor will help you carve out a summer-ready silhouette using their range of advanced contouring technology. Nuriss beauty specialists employ the Exilis Elite’s radiofrequency and ultrasound abilities to literally melt away fat in your nominated problem areas. Pain-free and completely safe, the 30-45 minute non-surgical procedure targets fatty tissue by penetrating deep into the skin, heating fat cells to a comfortable 43 degrees and eliminating them in the process. The result? Dr. Anita promises a visible change even after the first treatment, although foursix weekly sessions are recommended. Starting from £350, Nuriss’ Perfect Peach Bottom Toning is ideal for an extra lift or help shifting cellulite. Finally, emerging from winter-induced hibernation into bodybaring territory is no longer daunting. u

he recent Paris Couture catwalks were awash with Florals, from Chanel’s decoupage fantasy to Valentino’s dreamy gauze creations. It also helps that all these products are hard-working investment buys. I’m frivolous, but not foolish. he buzz words in beverage trends today are antioxidants, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals, as finally, the reality of the adverse health impact of soft drinks has filtered down into mass consciousness. And while the majority of people might balk at the level of commitment required for switching to a vegan diet, choosing a healthy drink is an easy way to kick start a lifestyle change. PLENISH is the only UK made and manufactured organic cold pressed juice company available nationwide. Designed to detoxify and energize the body with balanced, nutritious juice and nut milks, they also offer a uniquely customized juice cleanse programme, with three levels of intensity depending on a client’s nutritional history. In terms of trends for the year ahead, Birch Sap has got plenty of airtime and is popping up more frequently in food, beverage and cosmaceuticals. ABSOLUTELY XXXXXX / XXXXXXX / PROMOTION ANY PARENT wants what’s BEST for their CHILDREN
At a CROSSROADS TV Edwards LLP explain how to cope with a relationship in crisis
I
t’s the familiar story of boy meets girl in their 20s (surprisingly, without the help of Tinder!): Lucy and Joe are sweethearts at university, now in their early 40s and married with children, Oliver and Daisy. They both enjoy the finer things in life and have worked hard together to secure their London home and holidays abroad. Lucy runs her own marketing agency and Joe is a Partner at a well-known accountancy firm. They live in Battersea and visit their holiday home in Tuscany whenever possible. Joe has been under
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
B&C_Apr15_TV Edwards_adv.indd 44
immense pressure for the past 12 months, working late and managing important accounts, which often means saving to socialise with clients and late nights with large bar tabs. This has created tension at home, and caused serious rows. Lucy works part-time but runs the household, is the main carer for the children, and has supported Joe in obtaining partnership at his firm. Joe feels that Lucy fails to contribute enough financially and prefers to have time to herself, when he is having to work a 60+ hour week. They have both become increasingly unhappy in their relationship and are struggling to find a
way of balancing their family and work life commitments. The children have noticed the tension and are anxious. Family friends have commented on a change in their children’s behaviour. Lucy and Joe are thinking about separating and want help. What options do Lucy and Joe have, and what do they decide to do ? Here's what they need to consider: Individual and couples counselling, therapy (such as family mediation or collaborative law) can improve communication, an important part of whether Lucy and Joe stay together or whether they separate. Any parent wants what’s best for their children. The law supports this by saying that the children’s welfare is the most important factor in deciding any dispute about children and always the first consideration. The law also says that if parents separate, the children are entitled to have a continuing relationship with both parents. Ensuring children have somewhere to live if their parents divorce is the first priority in settling finances. If Lucy and Joe separate, they will help themselves and their children if they work together to make the best possible arrangements for their care, however they might feel about each other. If Lucy and Joe decide to separate, they will save themselves time, money and stress if they can agree on finances. The law sets out the factors to be considered in reaching a fair settlement. Mediation, collaborative law or negotiation through solicitors can help formulate an agreement that a judge can approve and make into a binding court order, without Lucy or Joe having to go to court. If Lucy and Joe separate but are not ready to divorce, they could negotiate a separation agreement, while they decide what to do. Breaking up is hard to do. Whatever they decide, specialist advice can help. u

GAIL’S FRESH HERB TART R e c i p e b y r oy l e v y of Gail’s Artisan Bakery
kitchen
CONFIDENTIAL South West London’s latest food news, served with all the trimmings
ike a garden baked into a tart. This beautiful tart works with all kinds of herbs, but try to avoid strong flavours such as coriander or rosemary as they tend to overpower.
L
W o r d s R O M Y VA N D E N B R O E K E
INGREDIENTS For the pastry: • 120g butter, at room temperature • 60g cornflour • 1 egg yolk • 2 tbsp water • ½ tsp fine sea salt • 1 tsp caster sugar • 130g plain flour For the filling: • 25g butter • 1 onion, thinly sliced • 4 spring onions, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, finely sliced • 3 eggs • 100ml crème fraîche, plus extra to serve (optional) • 120ml double cream • ¼ tsp salt • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper • ¼ tsp coriander seeds, lightly toasted and ground to a powder • 120g mature cheddar, grated • 2 sprigs of parsley, leaves only, roughly chopped • 4 sprigs each of tarragon, thyme, oregano, marjoram, and chervil, leaves only, roughly chopped • 2 tbsp snipped chives
METHOD 01 First, make the pastry. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter until smooth. Stop the machine, scrape it down, and add the cornflour, egg yolk, water, salt and sugar. Mix again on low speed. Stop, scrape and add the flour. Mix slowly until you have a soft dough. Flatten out into a thick disc and wrap in cling film. Chill for 2 hours. 02 Roll out one half of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to 3mm thick disc, put in tart tray, bake blind, then allow to cool completely. Reduce the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. 03 To make the filling, melt butter in a frying pan, cook the onion, spring onions and garlic over a medium heat until very soft. 04 Whisk together the eggs, crème fraîche, double cream, salt, pepper and ground coriander. Add the onion mixture and mix well. Stir in all herbs and grated cheese. Pour the herb custard into the tart case and bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 170°C/gas mark 3 and bake for 20-25 minutes. Try to keep the tart light in colour, so the colours of all the herbs shine through. Serve while still warm, perhaps with an extra dollop of crème fraîche.

mid-week meal is usually nothing special. Luckily this was not the fate of my experience at Source, one of Battersea’s most sustainable restaurants. With a strict Local Suppliers Only policy, the Ransome’s Dock eatery was as elegant as it was environmentally friendly. (Who said ethical dining was unrefined?) This serene little spot paid homage to its roots as a once operational port, with Source’s open plan and exposed brick interior accented by warm mood lighting and dark steel furnishings. While looking out on the canal my dinner date and I concurred this cosy alcove was indeed, a painfully romantic place to be. Just as Dean Martin crooned “That’s Amore”, a croquette amuse bouche
arrived at our candlelit table. Their crunchy exterior, unctuous ox cheek filling and silky harissa aioli dip rendered our bouches very amoused. To start we opted for the Crab Toast and Artichoke Dip. Simple in name, yes, but simple in flavour? Heavens no. Despite its few ingredients, head chef Matthew Tarantini’s Artichoke Dip was complex in profile, thanks to a warm pot of smashed artichoke hearts veiled by melted cheese and grilled Turkish bread squares for dipping. My date’s Crab Toast consisted of an angelically light arrangement of thinly spread crab meat, burnt spring onion and chilli over toasted sourdough. Never one to deny good wine a home in my glass, I suggested we try a bottle of the Von Winning Riesling. Not only did it pair beautifully with our starters, its soft
51 B&C_Apr15_Food_Review.indd 51
citrus notes and rounded flavour held their own when paired with our mains. The second act of our meal comprised Lamb Chop with Aubergine Caponata, Ratte Potatoes & Ricotta and Spaghetti with Cuttlefish, Leeks & Tarragon. The spaghetti, handmade in-house by Source’s resident Italian pasta chef, was quite sweet at first bite. But, after a few mouthfuls of the al dente pasta the dish’s luxurious sauce proved addictive. While my lamb was cooked nicely it was no match for my date’s dinner. As our sitting reached its crescendo, we thought it wise to try Source’s Chocolate Tart & Bay Leaf Ice Cream and Earl Grey Tea Crème Brulée & Poached Rhubarb. Though seemingly innocuous, the small block of a chocolate tart was the stuff of seasoned dessert samplers, with the ice cream’s tangy star anise cutting through its potent flavour. The crème brûlée on the other hand, was unexpectedly refreshing. Its gentle Earl Grey infusion and poached rhubarb cubes were lovely updates on the original crème brûlée. Overall, Source may not be the place for slick, minimalist fare. But if you’re after an unfussy, supremely delicious meal of the best British seasonal produce, we suggest you head straight to (the) Source.

ne of the wonderful things about my life as a chef is that I never stop learning and finding cooking inspiration from my travels and the people I meet. So on a recent visit to Hong Kong I jumped at the chance to re-visit Macau, a unique East-meets-West corner of Asia, and uncover the vibrant destination I first discovered 25 years ago. The Portuguese arrived here in the 16th century and although Macau became a Special Administrative Region of China in 1999, their influence can still be clearly seen. I expected things to have changed since my last visit, but didn’t realise quite how dramatically the culinary scene would have evolved. Macau is much more than its ‘Las Vegas of the East’ reputation suggests and for a place measuring just 11 square miles, it packs a real cultural punch. After the 50-minute fast ferry ride from Hong Kong, my reintroduction to Macau started with a stroll around the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around every corner of this atmospheric part of Macau there are beautiful Chinese and Portuguese buildings of every kind linked by a maze of narrow streets and squares. The marriage of Portuguese and Chinese cultures also inspired my first

culinary experience in Macau, with a visit to see my friend and chef, David Wong, who is an expert in the local Macanese cuisine. While he cooked up some delicious Gambas a Macau, he explained how Macanese cuisine came into being. It was down to the Portuguese, who brought with them flavours and cooking styles from their home and far flung voyages,
blending Portuguese and Chinese flavours with seasoning and ingredients collected from South America, Africa, India and Malaysia. It is amazing to think that Macanese cuisine was one of the world’s first fusion foods, established centuries before fusion became the ubiquitous concept it is today.

TRAVEL / GASTRO TOURS Together we headed to one of David’s favourite Macanese restaurants, Restaurante Litoral, where I fell in love with the Casquinha a Litoral, a baked crab meat dish served in a rich sauce followed by the classic Galinha Africana and African Chicken, roasted in paprika and basted in coconut, garlic and chilli peppers. The Pato de Cabidela, slowly braised duck infused with local herbs, wasn’t the prettiest of dishes, but tasted out of this world. The pièce de résistance was the Tacho, a rich winter stew with smoked meats. With a head full of new recipe ideas, I retreated to the Mandarin Oriental Macau. The hotel benefits from a gorgeous waterfront location which is best enjoyed in the evening when the skyline lights up and throws its reflection onto the surrounding lake. I was lucky enough to enjoy a meal at the hotel’s restaurant Vida
Macanese

Rica, where I caught up with my friend and brilliant chef, Dominique Bugnand. The restaurant impressed me with its signature dish of braised whole green garoupa with kimchi. The following day I headed for Taipa, the island sandwiched between Macau and Coloane, where I a whole street is dedicated to food. Rua do Cunha or the more colloquially named ‘Food Street’ and its surrounding roads in Old Taipa Village, offer a kaleidoscope of eateries serving Chinese, Portuguese and Macanese food, most of it from small local cafes, stores and stalls. Certain dishes have become synonymous with Macau and none more so than the humble Pork Chop Bun – mine was sweet and tender and the bun had a moreish crispy edge and was soft inside. That evening I returned to Taipa to dine at the famous Antonio’s. Opened in 2008, Chef António Coelho has brought his passion and gusto for Portuguese food and culture to the heart of Macau. To start I tried the Chouriço Caseiro
Assado na Canoa or roasted homemade Portuguese sausage and Bacalhau com Natas, shredded dried codfish baked in the oven with a creamy cheese sauce. My final day in Macau took me to Coloane, where Lord Stow’s bakery provides the sweetest of treats. Founded by Englishman Andrew Stow in the 1980s, the bakery is now run by his sister Eileen and is famous for one product – the sweet Portuguese egg tarts known as pasteis de nata. Following a visit to Portugal, Andrew developed his own version of these delicious, flaky pastries and thanks to his vision the bakery now sells an astounding 10,000 a day. A short walk through Coloane Village brought me to the

pretty Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, which was built in 1928 in the style of many of Macau’s baroque churches. My evening ended with a cocktail on the terrace of the hotel, Pousada De Sao Tiago. It was fitting that this delightful property overlooking the bay was once a fortress built by the Portuguese to defend Macau against pirates and other European nations. In many ways it represents what Macau has become – a place that protects its heritage but embraces modern luxuries. Over the past three days I had barely scratched the surface of what Macau offers foodies but it has certainly given me a reason not to wait 25 years before I board that ferry again.

O
ne of the most famous terraces in the world, The Royal Crescent is an archetypal example of Georgian architecture. The sweeping row of terraced houses is Grade I listed and debuts the same Georgian stone façade and Ionic columns from when it was first built in the late 1700s. Designed by architect John Wood the Younger, the Royal Crescent has become a key historical site for Bath’s steady flow of tourists which, after an 18 year battle, are no longer allowed to visit the crescent in tour buses. Each house has a rich historical tapestry that has been sown by many a famous face. Writer Christopher Anstey resided in number 5, while jurist and explorer Thomas Falconer lived in number 18, and Major Bernard Cayzer bought number 1 in 1970 and gave it to the Bath Preservation Trust as a gift to the people of Bath. The hotel occupies number 15 and 16 on the crescent and is all long sash windows, panelled walls and original features. This set the scene, helped by the blustery wind, typecast staff and black cat, for a weekend that could’ve come right out of a Jane Austen novel.

any of the bedrooms and suites at the hotel have been named after notable historical figures who’ve stayed or resided in the different houses at some point in the past. These include the Sir Brinsley Sheridan Suite, the Elizabeth Linley room and the Ralph Allen Suite. The latter, where we stayed, is elegantly kitted out with a large, cloud-like bed, a walk-in wardrobe, and even a secret hideaway study, which on our stay became the popular ‘red wine room’. There is no minibar, which took us by surprise, but the in-house sommelier is as efficient as can be and makes things special by popping the cork for you in your room.

ander out of the main house into the enclosed acre of gardens, where there is a striking pillared Pavilion, manicured lawns and preened flowerbeds. There’s also a back-building that houses both the restaurant and the spa. The spa, which is a destination in its own right, is simple and pared back. There are plenty of treatment rooms, but it’s the indoor swimming pool (inspired by the famous baths in town) that really draws the crowd. Treatment-wise, the spa has all the classics, but we suggest opting for the Royal Crescent’s Signature Treatment. The 90-minute ESPA treatment includes a back massage, scalp massage and facial. O, Brother!
Twin-team Joseph Joseph transformed the kitchen design into something bright and modern. But how far have they come since? I n t e r v i e w r o m y va n d e n b r o e k e
ROMY VAN DEN BROEKE: Did you always know you wanted to be designers? JOSEPH & JOSEPH: Design and manufacturing runs in our blood, so I think we would have always ended up doing something creative. Our grandfather owned a glass factory that our father then took over and our mother is an architect. All of our siblings have careers in design, so it’s definitely a family trait. RvdB:What’s the philosophy behind the Joseph Joseph brand? J&J: Our design ethos is: intelligent function, innovative design and beautiful form. RvdB: Describe the design style in three words: J&J: Functional, innovative, distinctive RvdB: How has it been working with your sibling? J&J: It’s great; much better than some people might think! We are both able to play to our strengths and I think this is why it works so well. RvdB: Is there a personal reason why you chose to design for the kitchen? J&J: The first commission we got was when our father asked us to re-design a range of glass chopping boards that his factory was producing, so kitchenware was a bit of a happy accident. After the success from that venture the range and company grew. We like to solve problems through design. At the moment the kitchen seems to be the area where this type of innovation works best, but who knows what the future holds. RvdB:What is it that allowed you to turn a relatively mundane, everyday object, like the chopping board, into such an iconic product?
ABSOLUTELY MAGAZINES
CHIS_APRIL15_JOSEPH & JOSEPH.indd 70
THE PROBLEM IS WHEN people buy fakes and the QUALITY IS BAD we then start getting CUSTOMERS THINKING it is our PRODUCT J&J: We never set out to make something ‘iconic’ because design doesn’t work that way, if you were trying to do that it would never work. The products that have turned out to be the most successful for us are the ones that marry function with a really distinctive aesthetic and colour. With the Index set, the use of colour instantly
communicates the function to anybody who is using it, and that is the key to its success. RvdB: What’s your favourite signature Joseph Joseph design? J&J: It’s difficult to choose just one, but probably the Chop2Pot as that is really the product that started it all for us. More recently though, I would have to say Totem, as it’s such a fantastically functional product. RvdB: Tell me about your newest launch, Totem? J&J: Totem is the first product in our Intelligent Waste range. It is a waste separation unit that allows you to store all of your kitchen waste and recycling in one sleek design. With so many people required to pre-sort their waste at home, it often results in the use of additional bins or bags and boxes to keep all of these elements separate, which can look messy. With

HOMES & INTERIORS / INTERVIEW RvdB: You’ve dealt with plenty of counterfit problems, how have you had to deal with that? J&J: We now have an in-house IP lawyer that deals with these issues. The problem is when people buy fakes and the quality is bad we then start getting customers thinking it is our product. So if you are not on top of it, this can be quite dangerous as far as the brand image is concerned. RvdB: What Joseph Joseph products can you and your family not live without? J&J: The Nest 9 is used daily! It contains everything that you need to prepare food and it stacks away so compactly when not in use. RvdB: What is it about the London design scene that you love? J&J: It’s the sheer variety of young talent that comes through every year, it’s genuinely inspirational. RvdB: Where in London do you go for inspiration? J&J: Always head east. It’s a cliché, but that is definitely where the design scene is growing at the moment. The Design
Totem you are offered flexibility in how you use all of its compartments and enough capacity for all of your household waste, but without the need to compromise on kitchen space.
Museum is great for showcasing exisiting and upcoming talent, and obviously the London Design Festival is a fantastic creative scene.
RvdB:Which fellow designer’s work do you admire? J&J: James Dyson is definitely the one that stands out. He has turned innovation into a very successful business but without compromising on design and quality.
RvdB: What is the thing you are most excited about in 2015? J&J: We are looking forward to our Spring Summer 15 launch and to see how Totem continues to do this year.
RvdB: From where do you draw inspiration? Is there a process that leads you to building a new design or collection? J&J: Usually we look around and try to spot problems that need solving. Many of our best ideas have started with the thought “Wouldn’t it be better if…?” Otherwise, we look to larger trends that are happening in the world of kitchenware and start innovating in those areas.
71 CHIS_APRIL15_JOSEPH & JOSEPH.indd 71
RvdB: What does the future hold for Joseph Joseph, both personally and as a brand? J&J: Both of us are hugely proud of what has been achieved in such a small space of time. We have only been in business for 12 years, but thanks to our fantastic team we hope that we will be doing the same in another 12! u josephjoseph.com

CUDDLEDRY ORGANIC COTTON BATH TOWEL Wo r d s H E L E N B A R O N
f necessity is the mother of invention, someone at Cuddledry must have experienced one too many chaotic baby bathtimes. Their response was to design a bath towel with little ones (and their parents) firmly in mind: the result is the Cuddledry, a snuggly apron-style towel made of super-soft, absorbent organic cotton and naturally antibacterial bamboo fibre. Simply loop the Cuddledry around your neck and you can use it to lift baby from the bath with both hands – ensuring he or she stays warm and cosy while you stay miraculously dry. (It’s hooded too, so draws excess water away from baby’s face.) Simple but brilliant Ω like all the best inventions Ω and a surefire way to remove some of the stress from your routine. ◆ £29.99; cuddledry.com

Advice for students and parents on picking the best kind of holiday tuition before exam season starts
s we head towards the final leg before the countdown to A GCSEs, AS-levels and A2s begin, it is vital that students have a clear revision schedule mapped out. Ideally this should begin now, avoiding the mad, last minute cramming spree. Using constructive criticism received from their mock exams, specific areas of weakness can be identified. If extra tuition is needed this can then be arranged in advance. Doing so helps to ensure that the student has the tutor of their choice, which will likely result in more effective study. Quality over quantity is definitely a cliché that rings true in this instance. There is no point in spending hours poring over books if the student’s main achievement at the end of a day is staring out of the window for several hours or arranging their summer holidays to the minutest detail. So what revision approach should students adopt when? It is far better to combine structured and rigorous study sessions with outdoors study, where possible, and sports to keep both the brain fresh and morale up. And, it goes without saying, a healthy, balanced diet and plenty of sleep are key to an alert mind and prolific memory. Though simple, these tactics are the best methods for students to learn their class material, as efficiently (and as painlessly) as possible.

ometimes great change happens quietly. Such a moment happened a year ago in a corner of south-west London when King’s College School hosted True Grit, a conference on developing emotional resilience in schools. A conference to openly address issues surrounding teenage mental health with representatives from the country’s most elite schools was a first. Within a week of advertising the event tickets were sold out, with nearly 200 leading school head teachers and pastoral heads attending. Highlights included a speech from child psychologist Prof Tanya Byron, Prof Russell Foster’s talk on adolescent sleep and neuroscientist Sarah-Jayne Blakemore shedding some light on the complexities of the teenage brain. The day was a resounding success. As Robert Milne now says: “The wave of public interest and support that surged the True Grit conference along has continued into other schools, professional
77 CHIS_APRIL15_Education.indd 77
development events and the media.” Closer to home, Godolphin & Latymer recently ran a week of ‘resilience training’ for its high-flying girls entitled Challenge Your Limits. And in south-east London, Colfe’s School’s ‘Developing resilient minds’ programme shows that concern for teenage well-being is still uppermost in teachers’ minds. So much so that Dr Nihara Krause, an adolescent psychologist and key speaker at True Grit, has been asked to headline the Headmaster’s Conference deputy heads’ conference in Glasgow. King’s hasn’t stood still either, a few weeks ago it ran a sister conference entitled ‘Caring to Achieve’ and mental health campaigner Ruby Wax making the keynote speech. Why has personal resilience struck such a chord? King’s headmaster Andrew Halls says: “It is partly because we were openly discussing matters that some schools have been very reluctant to address. With an apparent perversity, some adults and children seem to ‘have everything’ – except happiness.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT LOCALLY?
“We love meeting friends at Bill’s on Putney High Street for a lazy Sunday morning brunch. It’s always delicious.”
WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO START AN ONLINE KID’S BOUTIQUE? “Well there was that sudden realisation that I would have to take my two out of control under-five-year-olds, in my car, to Selfridges to buy some of the brands that I liked. Just the idea of parking my car, chasing them around the department store and then the commute home was enough to fill me with fear. So, Alex and Alexa was born. Now their bedroom is the changing room...”

WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO THING TO DO WITH THE KIDS?
“I love taking my boys to the children’s zoo in Battersea Park. They also love the ESCA bakery/deli on Clapham High Street. Their cakes come topped with a lot of frosting and a lot of fresh fruit - a kids dream come true!”
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT?
“Launching Global Kids Fashion Week in 2013 was a massive success. It took 6 months of planning, and a team of young talented people working all the hours, but in the end we created and launched a 40 minute runway show that was streamed globally to our customer base, showcasing the coolest kid’s fashion on the planet!”
WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY?

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Rupert Nicholson Sales Negotiator at Knight Frank, Clapham Photography: rebecca noonan
K
night Frank has sold property in Clapham for over 20 years, until recently all from the Wandsworth office. When I heard there was a new office opening in Clapham, I jumped at the opportunity. I have lived in South West London for almost ten years now and I have spent a lot of this time in Clapham, whether in one of the many bars or restaurants or running around the Common. The area has always had a fantastic buzz about it and has changed hugely, with a plethora of new bars, restaurants and shops popping up recently. A lot of people have targets at work, especially in sales. Some people would argue this adds pressure to the workload, but I believe it just gives you focus and something to aim towards. However, it is important that the targets are realistic and achievable; if they are not, then this can have a detrimental effect. I find setting goals and targets outside of work useful as well. This could be anything from learning a musical instrument or language, running a marathon, or even spending more time with your family. In 2010, I was part of a team that raced to the North Pole. It was a 350 mile walk and ski across sea ice. It was a great success, with my team winning the race by two days and and coming in just two hours shy of beating the record. The project didn't come to fruition by itself though, and was actually two whole years in the making. I was training six times a week, we organised 15 fundraising events resulting in £50,000 for Mencap. It was extremely
demanding, juggling a full time job, training six times a week and organising fundraising events too. However, it was probably the most productive two years of my life. It gave me focus inside and out of work. Currently there are pockets of activity in the market in Clapham. It is a good time to buy as there is more stock available in comparison to last year and fewer people looking to buy. I would say that the buyers are more focused and they are definitely benefiting from some of the best mortgage rates in history. If properties are priced correctly at the moment, they are selling well. We launched three loft-style apartments three weeks ago and have already exchanged on one at the guide price, with another under offer at the guide price also. I think this has come about for a number of reasons, partly because the developer has done a great job, but I think the asking prices – target prices – are realistic and achievable. I am excited to be working here in the Clapham market; there is a real buzz and lots going on. The property stock is diverse and I see growth and opportunity in the future. A sign of the area’s success is that more and more buyers are coming from north of the river, recognising Clapham’s good value. For my next target I am currently training to swim the channel with a team of colleagues from Knight Frank. We will be swimming the 21 miles in June, the water temperature will be approximately 15 degrees. We are fundraising for The Haven (thehaven.org. uk) who do wonderful work for breast cancer. 020 3667 6750; knightfrank.co.uk

Most satisfying transaction I’ve had… A local family I knew well were interested in buying their dream home which we were marketing. The family needed to sell their own property quickly in order to progress with the sale. I worked tirelessly to deal with both sides of the move and they were delighted with the outcome. Most interesting property I’ve been involved with… We once marketed an unusual converted factory, which gained interest from a wide range of potential buyers, including families looking for a “Grand Designs” style project, property
developers and even buyers who were looking to use the space as a private nursery. The property I’d most like on our books… It would have to be one of the elegant family homes overlooking Clapham Common on the North Side. Finest Property Showcase… Broomwood Road, SW11, £1.1m. S.O.F. A three double bedroom split level Victorian conversion set moments from Wandsworth Common. The property has been finished with a meticulous eye for detail and design throughout.

merging Prime South West London has outperformed Prime Central for the third year running with 2.8 times greater price growth in 2014. It seems tenants like it too, with nominal rental growth keeping up with inflation. Indeed, despite huge capital returns, nominal rental growth has averaged a not insignificant c.70% over the last ten years, again double the figure of some smart prime areas. Given City employee budgets for rentals are more modest and the fact that even relatively wealthy domestic buyers seem priced out of central London, it seems the growth of both indices is assured in the short term. The new build market has not impacted adversely on the second hand market and over time the municipal infrastructure accompanying these developments will benefit all.

fter 2014’s vigorous upward surge in house price growth as buyers jostled for the best properties, the market has cooled off a little in Balham during the first few months of 2015. Balham’s housing market is pausing for breath both in terms of pricing and activity. 2014 was incredibly busy and it comes as no surprise to us that house prices are now remaining fairly steady with this slight interval merely returning growth to more solid and stable ground. Consumer concerns about interest rate rises and the Scottish referendum have now switched to the forthcoming May election and so a wait and see approach continues to be exercised. After this breather, we expect growth to begin climbing again around the Easter period. Following the general election, we predict activity volumes will be turned up, and once political uncertainty will be put to bed. For buyers, there are currently some great mortgage deals to be had and high quality flats, maisonettes and family homes in Balham are doing well in the below £1.3million price bracket. The changes in stamp duty have certainly affected properties at the higher end of the scale.

That is if the exceptional schools, the burgeoning café culture, and the direct transport links into central London don’t persuade you. And all this for a lower price tag than our more established neighours. So if you’re looking to stretch your legs and look South East, we believe there’s no better place to start than by talking to the local experts. Pedder. Nobody knows SE London like we know SE London.

high quality service so what better way to do that than using customer feedback. We had no idea how the industry would react but we had a hunch it would be a success. One of the first people we ran the idea past was Phil Spencer. He was totally supportive and has presented The ESTAS every year since.” Now in their 13th year, The ESTAS Group have developed into more than a very prestigious awards event. They are a management information service, marketing tool and live client feedback hub for agents, mortgage brokers, conveyancers and suppliers to the industry. Phil Spencer
he first thing I noticed about Simon Brown, Managing Director of The ESTAS Group was how passionate he is about customer service. “Most of us nowadays are used to having average or bad customer experiences, we all have them every day. The frustrating thing is that when we do have a bad experience and want to complain, it’s normally such a long-winded process we give up because we’re too busy. That means most companies never actually know they are giving sub-standard service.” Brown is equally frustrated at the raw deal estate and letting agents get from the general public and media. “My wife Sarah used to work for a local agent and it wasn't until then I realised how hard a job it was. There are so many different factors to every deal and there are many things that can happen that you’re not in control of that can break a chain down.” Brown felt so strongly about Sarah’s experience that they both decided to launch a national award scheme which highlights agents giving excellent customer service. “We decided straight away the best way to ‘judge’ agents was to ask clients to rate the service they received. We wanted to help change the general perception of agents and at the same time give firms the platform to promote their commitment to providing
Access to The ESTAS platform immediately gives each business a marketing pack with which to advertise, using posters, embed logos, press releases and tweet feedback to their followers through direct links. Monthly service performance reports with live graphs measuring feedback in different service areas against regional competitors and national average and a winner’s marketing pack are all part of the ESTAS experience, helping firms to manage and grow their businesses. “Our clients use the ESTAS process both internally and externally to increase customer service levels, to manage and motivate teams and to brand their business as one that is happy to be measured by their customers.” Finally Brown adds “This year is going to be more competitive than ever and never more so than in London which is why we have linked up with the Absolutely Magazine Group. We want to spread the word to London agents what the benefits of taking part are and give them a marketing edge in 2015”.

hile a few lenders have started offering 10 year fixed mortgages, the truth is that these mortgages don’t have a high level of demand. A few of our customers have considered locking in for 10 years, but the majority feel that it’s a very long period of time and instead opt for 5 year fixes, which tend to offer better interest rates anyway. Most customers in the London market want flexibility so a 2 or 5 year fix is often far more suited to their lifestyle. In addition, London homeowners are often quite aspirational, trading up to meet family demands every few years. Most often, those that will consider a 10 year fix are buyers purchasing their last home, they tend to be on a fixed income and usually don’t receive a bonus from work, so for these reasons they might feel that a 10 year fix offers them the stability they need.

ou might wonder why an apartment within an Art Deco block in Soho might fetch £2.75 million when it’s in an area which was recently called the ‘seedy underbelly’ of London. And that was by one of its fans. Why is it so popular with online house hunters? The property has been viewed nearly 30,000 times over the past month on Zoopla, making it the most frequently viewed even though it’s one of hundreds of apartments for sale over £2.5 million in central London. So what’s going on? Rob Hill, MD of Greater London Properties, says it’s probably because the vendor, the CEO of a huge multinational corporation, recently dropped his asking price by £250,000 and this will have put the property on people’s ‘reduced price properties’ alerts. But the apartment, which features high ceilings and a large roof garden, is also typical of the new kind of upmarket apartment now available on
Dean Street and this reflects the changes that Soho’s property market is undergoing. Not so long ago multi-millionaire CEOs were unlikely to have considered it an appropriate place to have a London crash pad and instead would have settled for neighbouring Mayfair, Knightsbridge or Kensington. But attitudes are changing. Only a few years ago, Soho was best known for its sex shops and hedonist nightclubs which have dominated the area since the 1950s. But under pressure from Westminster Council to licence or close, many of these establishments have chosen the latter and are making way for more conventional retail outlets. The area is gentrifying too radically for some.

Stephen Fry recently headed up a Save Soho campaign supported by Benedict Cumberbatch, Pete Townsend and Eddy Izzard to have Soho’s square mile of mostly low-rise Georgian and Victorian houses declared a ‘heritage zone’. And this apartment is in the thick of it. Famous residents and visitors to Dean Street include Mozart, who gave a recital at No.22, while Admiral Nelson spent the night in a house on the street before the Battle of Trafalgar plus an impoverished Karl Marx lived at both No.28 and No.56. The street also has strong connections to the music industry, the chief of which is Dean Street Studios (at No.59). A litany of artists have recorded songs there from David Bowie to Duran Duran. But for how long will it continue to be a working area as well as a residential one? Now that the sex industry has been largely rooted out it’s becoming better known as a prime property market, helped by the expected marble-cladding of Dean Street’s northern end; Tottenham Court Station is to be torn down to accommodate Crossrail and reborn as a combined tube and rail station plus new offices, a theatre and housing.
