roperty in Islington is a big part of the area’s interwoven scenery. With estate agents dominating Upper Street, its vast range of Victorian townhouses, 70s maisonettes and new builds helping to create a diverse borough, Islington has become one of the most sought after places to set up home. So, with this in mind we have created the ultimate Interiors Special which features local interior designers, neighbourhood craftsmen and women and the latest trends for each room in your home. With autumn just around the corner now is the perfect time to do some revamping to your property and this month’s interiors guide aims to help you find the most creative and skilled people who can make a home for you. I get to grips with T4 hunk and presenter Rick Edwards who chats about his latest show, That Paralympic Show and discusses how he keeps his nerves at bay when interviewing Hollywood celebrities. With a great sense of humour, Rick is a man who can talk for England. Showing off his mathematical skills, the local resident reveals how Ruby Wax had a helping hand in his career and which celebrity left him a giggling mess. On a visit to Stoke Newington we try out Shine On the Green and discover the perfect treatments to help you relax and feel rejuvenated. Carrie Mitchell ventures down Liverpool Road and finds a hidden gem in the form of Italian restaurant, Di Monforte; and we uncover another hidden treasure when we chat to owner of Zero10 Gallery, Johann Bournot about his unique and contemporary approach to art. Sadly, this is my last issue as Editor of The City & Angel magazine and although I will not be moving from my favourite borough, I will certainly miss my role which has allowed me to meet so many interesting and creative residents, who have helped to make the magazine what it is and my job so enjoyable. Thank you! WE L CA LO

Sadler’s Wells opens its autumn 2010 season with a world premier of Shoes. Inspired by one of the greatest obsessions of our modern times, through music and dance and with a host of acclaimed collaborators, composer-writer Richard Thomas explores the gamut of footwear, from the highs of the Louboutin to the lows of the Croc. Commissioned and produced by Sadler’s Wells and premiering at the UK’s leading dance house in September, Shoes is a song and dance revue that reflects life from street-level perspective with wit, irreverence and affection.

DAVID BLACKBURN WORKS FROM THE LAST DECADE 113 UPPER STREET, N1 1QN 020 7704 1131 9–29 SEPTEMBER
Many eminent art critics and writers have written about David Blackburn and many more will do so in the future. David Blackburn lives on that margin between the bleak yet often blissfully beautiful moorland of the Pennines, and the sometimes grim, yet fascinating industrial mill towns of the old West Riding of Yorkshire. It is a place that he has returned to throughout his life and where he has based himself in the last decade.
The Islington Contemporary Art and Design Fair is an established showcase for artists and designers to promote and sell their work in one of the largest independent contemporary art spaces in central London. Taking place at the Candid Galleries, London, the fair will comprise a series of four exhibitions, each featuring different creative disciplines. Now in its seventh year, the ICADF is a unique event with a dynamic mix of both emerging young artists and those with established reputations. October also sees the return of the annual Angel Moving Image Festival. Taking place during the first weekend of the fair, the festival will screen some of the best short film and video by UK and International film makers and video artists. 7

f talking non-stop was an Olympic sport, T4 presenter Rick Edwards would have a good chance of winning gold. Our allocated 20 minute interview turns into a 45 minute chat about Mariah Carey’s diva behaviour - “She comes with all the trappings of being famous and is someone who is always surrounded by people doing various things;” Rick’s disdain for his brief career as a model – “I don’t like having my picture taken which is hard when that’s your job;” and a in-depth and amusing conversation about the latest TV show he is currently filming, That Paralympic Show, in which Rick is challenged to try out the sports first-hand. “I like to get involved as much as I can and so far I have tried rowing, which I was pretty poor at but not as bad as my co-presenter, Ade Adepitan (wheelchair basketball medallist). I tried wheelchair tennis which I was awful at because I just kept forgetting to move. If you don’t move it is very hard to win. I played wheelchair basketball and wasn’t very good at it and then I played Goalball which so far is my favourite,” exclaims Rick with the relaxed enthusiasm we have all become accustomed to seeing on shows such as E4’s Hollyoaks Music Show and as part of the T4 family alongside Steve Jones and Miquita Oliver. “Goalball was invented as sport and rehabilitation for the blind veterans of World War Two. Two teams of three players taking turns to try to throw a ball with bells in it towards the opponents’ goal. You have to use the sound of the bell to judge where the ball is and try and save it. It is brilliant and absolutely terrifying. It’s so tense the whole way but I really enjoyed it and it was definitely my favourite game so far.” Featuring interviews with sports stars and celebrities, the series introduces some of our key medal contenders for 2012 Paralympics, revealing their elite skills, demanding training regimes and the characters behind the competition. With a mixture of disabled and ablebodied co-presenters such as Olympic 400m runner Iwan Thomas and British Wheelchair Tennis Number One Lucy Shuker, Rick hopes that the show is a
great platform for changing attitudes towards disabled presenters, although stresses that the show is all about entertainment. “I think when you see the show you will see that we don’t really talk about the disability much and instead we talk about the people and have fun. Rather than go in quite hard with a message and being all sanctimonious, it is about making a show that is entertaining,” explains Rick. “In terms of disabled presenters I think we will see a big push to get sporting talent from the Paralympics to present and commentate on the 2012 events, which is a no-
brainer; if you are going to cover an event like that, then like in athletics where you have athletes commentating you should have the same with the Paralympics. And then hopefully that will be disseminated across the board.” The self appointed ‘man mountain’ of the T4 team, nickname so because of his 6’5” build, Rick started out by presenting the E4 music show. From there Channel 4 offered him their flagship youth music show, Freshly Squeezed, alongside Alexa Chung, before becoming a regular weekend morning hangover cure for every 20-somethings in the country. He also tried his hand as a radio DJ,
presenting XFM’s evening show, The Weekender. With his chiselled cheek bones and model background many could be mistaken for thinking that Rick is just a pretty face. But with a degree in natural sciences from Cambridge and a geek chic passion for mathematics, it seems there is more to the mighty man then meets the eye. When quizzed about a rumour circulating on the media grapevine about his maths related party game, he is happy to admit his passion for sums. “It isn’t the best party trick in world, is it? But basically it comes from the fact that my best friend is a maths teacher and we do genuinely enjoy doing mental arithmetic with each other. Essentially, the game involves giving me a difficult sum and then I like to race the calculator and if I get it first then everyone else has to do a shot,” Rick laughs. “At some point the game came out when I was working away with the T4 crew – it is more fun than it sounds, although an entirely useless skill.” Although his mathematical handiness isn’t often called upon in his day to day work, it was partly down to his academic talents that he landed in TV in the first place. “In my last year of university I started tutoring maths and science and just by chance I started tutoring Ruby Wax’s kids. At the time I was thinking about working in TV and she suggested that I should try and get on the graduate training scheme that was being run by the production company she was working with at the time,” says Rick. “So, I applied, got on it and then while I was doing that I did audience warm up for Ruby’s show.” Not a stranger to entertaining a live audience, Rick dabbled in stand up comedy at university, as well as performing in a few pubs and clubs when he first moved to London. Today he admits he has lost his childlike confidence and that he would find doing stand up a much scarier experience than interviewing a Hollywood legend. “With TV you have a team of people trying to make you look good and you’ve kind of got a partisan audience already because they know what you are about and that 11

“IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE A JOB; WELL, ACTUALLY I DON’T THINK IT IS A PROPER JOB! I JUST MESS AROUND AND TALK TO PEOPLE, WHICH IS GREAT AND YOU WOULD BE AN IDIOT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT,” LAUGHS RICK, they like you,” says Rick. “To do stand up on stage it is just you and your jokes. The audience doesn’t know you; they have probably paid £3 to watch you and they don’t really care so you need to work hard to make them laugh. Stand-up in the initial stages is very, very hard because you are very naked up there. Not literally. Well, you could be; I guess if in doubt take all your clothes off.” Rick’s appeal lies in the feeling that he is just a normal bloke working an abnormal job. He is the kind of guy who would be the same whether he was talking to Angelina Jolie or his granny. Having worked in many not-so-glamorous jobs before getting his big break, he attributes working these ‘real’ jobs as the key to staying grounded. “Although I hated a lot of the jobs I have done in the past I don’t look back on them with any regret, as I think it has been very helpful. I think if I had come straight from school into presenting you don’t have a proper perspective on life and you become detached and then I think you struggle to connect with your audience,” says Rick, cringing at what he claims is a cheesy but true statement. “I think the fact that I have spent hours washing up in a basement of a bar, doing door to
door sales and working in a burger van, routinely cleaning up burger detritus at 4 o’clock in the morning; all that stuff helps because that is normal stuff
whereas my job now is in nowhere normal, I recognise that and if you haven’t done anything else you might think it was normal and end up being a very strange person and you do meet people like that in this business.” So, if Mr Edwards is just like the rest of us does he ever get star struck? “I try not to because I think a star struck interview is generally a bad one but at times it is unavoidable and it usually happens in an odd context and not with the people you would think. So, when I interviewed Alex James from Blur for the first time I was really giggling and
excited because I love Blur; so that got me in a way that interviewing George Clooney didn’t. In the end everyone is just a person and I approach every interview like a conversation.” With another five weeks of filming ahead for That Paralympic Show, Rich recognises that like many of the sportsmen and women he is working alongside, that his career in TV has the potential to be short lived due to the nature of the business. However, unsurprisingly this doesn’t seem to worry the ever-laidback presenter. “It doesn’t feel like a job; well, actually I don’t think it is a proper job! I just mess around and talk to people, which is great and you would be an idiot to complain about that,” laughs Rick, “but I guess the flipside is that it could all end tomorrow and you just have to be pragmatic about. If it did all disappear at least I could look back and say that I had an amazing time and go and do something else but I could only look back on it with lots of fondness.” Rick Edwards co-presents “That Paralympic Show” every Saturday on Channel 4 throughout September and October. www.channel4.com/programmes/ that-paralympic-show

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Originally from Russia, Natalia Aldred has used her artist education to create a unique interior design company in the heart of Islington, which offers a personal service to help you create your dream home
D
irector and Principal Designer of her own Islington-based interior design company, Natalia Aldred grew up in Moscow and came from a very creative environment; all of her family, dating back to her great grandmother, were in design, fine art or crafts and her family business was in interior design. So, from an early age she enjoyed creating spaces, structures and decorating. With a thriving business, Natalia Aldred Limited, it is obvious when you meet Natalia and talk to her about her love for design that she has a talent for all things creative. And it is her background that highlights just how innate her creative talent is; by the age of 12 Natalia was sent to a specialist fine art school at the Russian Academy of Fine Art. She eventually focused on academic oil painting, and believes that having studied and practised fine art for all those years has a lot of influence over her current interior design work, especially her background in fine art, which is extremely helpful when advising clients on the choice of artworks for their homes. Despite her love for fine art, Natalia had always wanted to work
with spaces and so after graduating from Art School in 2000, she took a course at KLC School of Interior Design in London, finding it a great introduction to the world of interiors and gaining her an honours degree in Interior Architecture. During her time at university, Natalia had the fantastic opportunity to study interior architecture and furniture design in Germany, at the Fachhochschule Trier. She also went to Japan and spent many months working at Studio 80 in Tokyo, a well-known architectural and design practice. “My time in Japan was possibly one of the most inspirational periods in my life as I had a chance to really immerse myself in the culture, especially the design culture,” explains Natalia. “Working closely with Shigeru Uchida, a renowned Japanese master designer and head of Studio 80, is one of my most treasured experiences.” Along with these amazing experiences, Natalia continued to assist with the family interior design business back in Moscow, so that by the time she graduated from KLC School of Interior Design she felt she had enough contacts, experience and creative ideas to start her own interior design business. Founding Natalia Aldred Ltd
in 2005, Natalia set out to provide an individual and flexible interior design service, which aims to work closely with the client to supply everything from complete interior design services to interior decoration advice for freshening up a single room. With the ability to adapt to the client’s personal style, Natalia understands that every project is unique and demands an individual and personalised approach – which is what Natalia aims to present to every client she works with. “What I love about my job and working with my clients is the uniqueness of each project and the challenge that comes with it,” explains Natalia. “I love the challenge to make it unlike any other place that I have created.” And as if juggling interior projects both in London and in Russia wasn’t enough for Natalia, she has just launched her collection of unique restyled pieces for the home, which has always been a passion and is another example of her natural creative ability. So, now it seems that the only problem Natalia is going to face is finding the time to expand her already successful interior design company. www.nataliaaldred.com

LOCAL PROFILE With Niall Power, Director of MyHome Islington
What is the concept of MyHome? Simply put, we design our service to provide a secure, reliable and consistently high standard of domestic cleaning to busy people in north London. What is your background and what were the reasons for starting My Home? I am a management accountant and I spent seven years working for a hedge fund, based in Canary Wharf. There was never enough time for my wife (Suzanne) and I to get around to the mundane task of cleaning, so like many couples it became a major source of arguments. We finally decided to try and find a reliable cleaning service but unfortunately it seemed that our options were very limited. Either we used a random person found from a flyer or we used an agency – in both cases the cleaners were un-vetted, untrained and uninsured and very unreliable so things were being damaged and hidden or simply things going missing, cleaners not arriving, poor communication standards from both the cleaner and their central office. So, after four years of trial and error, we decided to open our MyHome, the professional cleaning company. What do you offer that is different from other cleaning companies? 1) Security - All our staff are full-time, who have been through our strict security checking procedures which include a police check. We also provide a secure key holding system. 2) Training – All our staff have been
trained in our Tri-ColourTM cleaning system which ensures that each customer gets a consistent and high standard of cleaning long-term. Our team always work in a team of two and we provide all the cleaning equipment and products. 3) Trust – we have been established for over five years and our office is based in Stoke Newington. In this time we have grown to over 25 employees and ten vans on the road servicing over 300 weekly or fortnightly clients in the north London area – all this growth is down to consistent reliable and secure service. 4) Customer Service – we are always on hand to handle any emergency or problem whether it is your washing machine has flooded the kitchen or you just found out your mother in-law is coming to visit, we will be there to help! Why did you choose to set up in Islington? Since we moved to London, ten years ago, we have always lived in Islington and now consider it our home. Our two little girls (Rionach and Ornaith) are developing London accents which their Irish grand parents find very amusing! Do you have a particular type of cliental? Islington certainly delivers in terms of providing us with a rich tapestry of people and a varied client profile – everything from celebrities to barristers and from doctors to media executives are happy to put the care of their homes into the hands of the professionals!
Paying for a cleaner is perhaps seen as a luxury, how have you weathered the recession? I think the reason that we have continued to grow over the last two years is that firstly our diverse customer demographic meant that very few were influenced by the down turn and secondly any company that provides an excellent service at reasonable cost will always do well! What are your plans for the future of MyHome? We would like to continue to grow slowly, that way it is easier for us to control the quality of the service provided. We have already expanded to serve Hampstead, Highgate and Finchley so we would like to open a second office in this area to make it easier for all concerned. What do you enjoy about living in Islington? The vast array of things to do, whether it is the farmers market on Saturday morning, a Sunday morning jog and swim in Highbury fields, a trip to one of the many theatres, restaurants etc or simply a long stroll along Upper Street – there is always plenty to do! When you aren’t working where do you like to go in the area? My two little girls love the swings, so Clissold Park in always on the agenda, particularly on a Sunday afternoon. When we have a baby sitter we love the Screen on the Green & Vue cinemas and the restaurants we like to visit are Almedia, Parveen and le Mercury. www.myhomeislington.com 33

FANDANGO
For over ten years vintage design gallery Fandango have been bringing treasures from across the world to their shop on Cross Street in Islington, however this autumn they have found some contemporary jewels closer to home. From the East London based Arts Cooperative Chish & Fips, fandango have got their hands on the latest works from the ‘Neon Aviary’ series. Owner Jonathan Hathaway is excited about this departure in a new direction, “For years I’ve wanted to find recent art that would sit well will the vintage furniture and other things we sell but nothing ever worked that well. These neon pieces are fantastic though, they have a great vintage feel and I love the fact they’re dual purpose - a beautiful art piece and a fun way to add some light and excitement to a corner or stairwell.” Fandango will be showing different birds from the collection throughout the coming months. 2 Cross St N1, www.fandangointeriors.co.uk
ANDREW DUMBLETON GARDEN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION Andrew Dumbleton has been creating London town gardens for over ten years, from inner city courtyards to suburban woodland wildernesses. Every project is designed with care and attention to detail. “A garden is always full of potential. When commissioned he will produce a detailed plan, and with his team, will see the project through to completion. 07957 310113, www.andrewdumbleton.com 37

POLISH POTTERY
Polish Pottery is starting their second quarter of trading in Angel with a new exiting offer. Parallel to the already well known traditional stoneware and contemporary ceramics designs, the shop will be stocking items defined as entirely unique; with either one off pieces or limited addition ranges. Having just returned from a five day “treasure hunting” at the Boleslawiec’ Pottery Holiday, the shop will be introducing their unique findings from the Artistic Ceramics’ presentation and expanding the all ready popular traditional stoneware collection. The traditional stoneware line will now include many new colours and decorations such as beautiful green crochets and dynamic deep reds. The contemporary ceramics exhibit will be introducing new artists – yet more established artisans creating vivid colourful ware as well as the Academy of Fine Arts’ graduates experimenting with unusual techniques for creating ceramics like using open-air kilns. There will be extra space for beautiful angel figurines, colourful frilled porcelain bowls and original raku/salt/sodium-fired ware. The Wellington Hospital is expanding its successful GP Liaison service, which gives GPs and patients easy access to the hospital’s medical services and outpatient facilities and makes the referral process easier. The Wellington Hospital is one of the world’s leading private hospitals offering acute medical services. It is part of HCA – London’s No 1 private hospital group. Diagnostic, imaging and treatment technology Medical teams at The Wellington Hospital are supported by the very latest diagnostic, imaging and treatment technology, enabling fast and accurate diagnosis of complex conditions. State-of-the-art facilities include 64-slice CT scanners, the latest MRI scanners, plus the full range of general X-ray, ultrasound, angiography, fluorocscopy and a cardiac research centre. Innovative techniques Working at the forefront of surgical and medical innovation, our teams of dedicated and highly trained professionals ensure that patients receive the best possible care, attention and treatment. The Wellington Hospital now offers a range of minimally invasive surgical procedures that are performed through one incision in the belly button, which is virtually scarless surgery. The single port approach is a new and innovative way of performing keyhole operations via the belly button that previously
required patients to have multiple scars. The SILS technique also known as single incision laparoscopic surgery or scarless surgery can be utilised to safely manage common surgical conditions including: ◆ Removal of appendix ◆ Removal of gall bladder for gallstones ◆ Hernia repair ◆ Colon operations ◆ Other operations on the stomach. The majority of single port operations are performed as a day case and the patient will only have one scar which is concealed in the belly button, the pain will be less and the recovery period is quicker. Most people can have single port laparoscopic surgery, it may however be more difficult for patients who have had previous or multiple operations where the abdomen is very scarred. A personal service for everyone The Wellington Hospital is determined to ensure that the scale of its operation doesn’t stop it from delivering a firstclass service to its private patients and to GPs referring people to one of the 400 consultants who work there. The dedicated GP Liaison service assists doctors and self-referring private patients to access quickly and efficiently its medical services and extensive outpatient facilities.
This means that one phone call is all it takes to arrange a convenient appointment with any of the hospital’s consultants. Where referring GPs do not have the name of a consultant, helpline staff will direct their enquiry to the most appropriate person. And if none of the hospital’s own consultants are qualified in the required specialty, helpline staff will be pleased to transfer the enquiry to another hospital in the HCA network.
Major specialties include ◆ Acute neuro rehabilitation ◆ Bariatric surgery ◆ Cardiac surgery ◆ Critical care ◆ Dermatology ◆ Interventional cardiology ◆ ENT ◆ Gastroenterology ◆ General surgery ◆ Gynaecology ◆ Liver and Hepatobiliary medicine ◆ Hip surgery ◆ Knee surgery ◆ Neurology ◆ Neurophysiology ◆ Neuropsychology ◆ Neurosurgery ◆ Ophthalmology ◆ Orthopaedics ◆ Plastic surgery ◆ Speech therapy ◆ Spinal surgery ◆ Urology ◆ Vascular surgery

3 TOP WEIGHT LOSS TIPS!
1. PLAN YOUR MEALS Most of us know that we should eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fish, chicken and quality slow release carbohydrate. So, why don’t we? I believe that it is because we don’t plan adequately. On a Saturday or Sunday, sit down and plan what you’re going to eat over the following week, both at home and at work. Then you can go to the supermarket and buy everything that you need for the week. Most of us know the feeling of not planning and then reaching for the phone to dial for a pizza. Using this planning strategy prevents that from happening.
2. PORTION SIZE Control how much you eat at each meal by reducing the amount food that you put on your plate. It has been reported that portion sizes are now 5 times bigger than they were 30 years ago. After we eat a meal, it takes 20 minutes for the brain to tell the body that we are satisfied and don’t need to eat any more food. Also, when we eat foods that are high in vitamins and minerals, our bodies stop telling us that we’re hungry as we have all the nutrients we need to function properly.

3. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING YOU EAT AND DRINK At Revolution we’ve had hundreds of clients achieve significant weight loss, and one the reasons for this is that we encourage our clients to record everything they eat and drink, including the time and place they ate. A recent article by Steve Mitchell, from MSNBC, states ‘A comprehensive study was carried out by Kaiser’s Centre for Health Research in Portland. It found that people who kept daily food diaries lost at least twice as much weight as those who didn’t keep a tally of their meals. ‘Nearly 1,700 Kaiser Permanente study participants agreed to exercise and adopt a healthy diet, but those who took the extra step of keeping track of what they consumed got something of a booster charge in their weight loss. ‘Overall, two-thirds of the study subjects lost nine pounds or more during the six-month study. But those who kept a food diary every day of the week dropped up to 20 pounds, more than twice as much as those who didn’t record their every bit.’ Enough said really.

PAMPERING BLISS
After a hectic summer of weddings and parties, Jenny White indulges in a bit of pampering at Shine on the Green, to help leave her feeling relaxed and rejuvenated
L
ast weekend I attended my final wedding of the year, and after nine weddings – and a funeral – it was a relief to wave the bride and bridegroom off and know that the season was finally over. Well, until next year at least! It all kicked off in February and since then I have had to don many a silly outfit for the hen dos, and experienced an array of wedding cakes and Best Man speeches every month up until now. So, finding myself with a bit of spare time, I decided it was time to have a little ‘me time’ and treat myself to a few pampering treatments to revive my weary wedding-going body. Having lived around the corner from Shine on the Green since its opening in 2009, I am embarrassed to say I had never visited the contemporary beauty spa, or realised, until my visit, just how many amazing treatments they offer – but after my visit, this is definitely set to change. Set back from Newington Green, Shine on the Green is the sister salon to the ever-popular Shine on Stoke Newington Church Street, and has established itself as a local favourite,
offering hair styling, complementary health and beauty services all under one roof. With the colour scheme seemingly taken from nature, and with sweeping clean lines created by the décor, the salon gives off an instant calming vibe as you walk in the door. The busy salon at the front hides the entrance to the five spacious treatment rooms at the back; and this is where I head for my first relaxing treatment. I opt for a therapeutic massage and my therapist, Mattea Di Gaetano, spends the first few minutes of our session asking me questions to get a grasp on what sort of massage I would benefit from. As I get comfortable under the warm towels, Mattea begins to knead my trouble spots around my neck and shoulders; getting rid of all the tension caused by hours spent at a desk, hunched over a computer. My arms and legs are gently stretched and my feet are treated to a little acupuncture; and as Mattea begins to slowly massage my head, this is where things become a little hazy as I drift off into a light, relaxed sleep.
Left feeling stress-free and with my body a lot looser, I move onto my next treatment room for my Body Smoothie. This is carried out by another of Shine’s expert therapists, who again tucks soft, warm towels around me and begins the energising treatment. Using Aveda’s walnut-based scrub, I am treated to an invigorating full body exfoliation, which I am told will help refine my dry and dull skin. After showering off the gorgeous smelling body scrub, I am then treated to a gentle massage using luxurious hydrating cream – by this point I am feeling totally peaceful and relaxed. With the 45 minutes up, I can straight away see and feel how much better my skin looks after my smoothie treatment. Now feeling soft, smooth and looking glowing, I leave feeling rested and rejuvenated. It seems I have found the perfect place just around the corner to help me achieve a little ‘me time.’ 20 Newington Green, London N16 020 7241 2065, www.shineholistic.co.uk

his month we’ve been bar-hopping in a bid to find the ultimate venue for our LBD summer party. Our assignment (not to be confused with socialising) took us to Shoreditch ‘creative café’ and club,The Bookhouse (where we scoffed amazing Mexican food) via The Bricklayers Arms, the lovely Royal Oak Pub and The Bathhouse, a classic London relic. Nestled in the shadows of the City,The Bathhouse is just that – a former Turkish bathhouse built in 1894–95 and surviving treasure of Victorian East London. Fancy! Retaining most of its original features and with opulent furnishings, it set off our LBDs nicely as we danced the night away, while London socialites and DJ duo, Don’t Run With Scissors, blared out some party corkers. The Ladybird cocktail bar in Islington was our next port of call.Their ‘Can I Keep It?’ night had piqued our interest when it started back in August, and we’d been meaning to make it down to the Wednesday evening ‘Juke Box’ for a while. Sponsored by Benefit Cosmetics, we were even able to get a handy makeover whilst listening to cherry-picked tracks, a couple of which we’d requested ourselves. The following Thursday we decided to head to The Baring pub to enjoy their quiz and curry night for a fiver. Indeed, we felt pretty smug about our bargain, especially seeing as we WON the quiz... thus proving that an impromptu stop-off for a pub quiz is never a bad thing! Feeling a little worn out (and over-boozed) from our adventures, we settled on The Redchurch Bar in Shoreditch as the final destination for our party. We were sold on the kitschy cocktail bar-cum-working men’s club vibe, conjured by a mix of heritage décor (antique wallpaper, deer head on wall) and lounge-jazz touches (velvet banquettes, gold-framed mirrors). We were sure the Redchurch could supply an adequate sense of drama for an LBD party. Following the success of our launch night at Soho House, we wanted to say thanks to our customers with another celebration and an excuse for fellow LBD lovers to get dolled up.We’ll report back next month on our party antics (and let you know whether the deer head is real or not!) – and in the meantime, check out our dress of choice for this month: the Miss Patina Chic Black and White Lace Front dress (see left).Visit our boutique and blog at theLBD.co.uk and sign up to the Mailing List for 10 per cent off your first purchase! 57

OOH LA LA! Founder of Proud Galleries, Alex Proud’s surname has an uncanny reference to the entrepreneur’s amassed achievements. Here he talks to Jenny White about not always getting it right and bringing a little bit of risqué to the City
W
hen I meet Alex Proud, founder of Proud, the hip photography gallery and live music venue, he’s sat at his large black lacquered desk in his Camden-based office; a corner sofa and a fluorescent fish tank in the crook of the small cellar-like office gives the room a very manly vibe. His white shirt is open at the neck and he is wearing skull and crossbones diamante cufflinks; quite apt for a man who funded his business with cash from the Russian Mafia – “I was in a dubious relationship with one of Russia’s first supermodels, a very exotic thing. We went out for two years and we were in love. She introduced me
to a lot of dubious Russians and I sold them Rolls Royce’s and that made me a lot of money.” I’ve been told that Alex is in a bad mood today, but the hour I spend with him he seems pleasant and relaxed, despite interrupting our chat a couple of times to pop his head around his office door and put his team of cool, young things that work in the adjacent office in their place. “What kind of boss am I? I think I am a tough boss. My expectations are high and I think I can be harsh when people fail, although really, really full of praise and kind when they succeed,” explains Alex after a few moments of mulling over the question. “A lot of people love me
66

Food&Drink
but a lot of people hate me; I bring out extreme emotions in people, but I don’t think that is uncommon with people who run large or small businesses because by nature it is a very personal thing, it is my name on the door and I have a way of running it and some people may hate that. My responsibility is to pay my staff on time every month so that they never have to worry; my responsibility is not their mental health – if they don’t like it they can resign.” It seems Alex is a man stuck in his ways, and since it is a way that has seen him launch one of the most successful independent photographic galleries in Europe, as well as producing a venue that has become a credible music hole and other popular Proud ventures, it is hard to argue with the man’s methods.
Wanting to work for himself just as his father had done, Alex blagged himself an apprenticeship working for a Chinese art dealer where he learnt the trade and found that he was “actually quite good at it.” The Proud group began its stellar trajectory in 1994 with Charing Cross Proud Central Gallery, where he sold oriental art. The switch to photography followed three years later after Alex’s then-secretary persuaded him to exhibit her husband’s photography work. The photographer in question was Denis Morris with his exhibition on the Sex Pistols. Proud Camden opened in 2000 and in 2001, swift to capitalise on the art world’s fusion with those of music and fashion, a bar was added and live bands were booked, creating a unique crossover of rock ‘n’ roll exhibitions and the music world, usually in the form of one-off performances; Liam Gallagher, Dirty Pretty Things, Amy Winehouse, and Graham Coxon are just a few who have graced the Proud stage. In November of last year, Alex launched Proud Chelsea and Proud Cabaret in the City, and two months ago he opened Proud Brighton (currently known as Brighton Ballroom until it is ready for the Proud stamp of approval); Proud Kitchen is due for opening this October and will be situated along with the main Proud Camden empire in the Grade II listed Old Horse Hospital in Camden’s Stables Market. Inspired by New York’s laid-back, canteen-style dining scene, the venue aims to be the gig-goer’s equivalent to a pre-theatre dinner. “We thought the canteen-style dining would work best because of the environment it is in; we aren’t going to do fine dining when we are a rock ‘n’ roll club. It is all about sociable eating,” explains Alex. “We never set out to be different and I don’t really care what others are doing, I think our efforts are best spent at doing what we are doing and doing it well.” Alex gives off a certain air of arrogance, a trait that he seems unashamedly aware of; however, he isn’t too big for his boots to admit that some business ventures haven’t quite worked out the way he had hoped.
Proud Cabaret has been a venture that the entrepreneur is only beginning to take a shine to, despite its success. “I didn’t quite realise what cabaret meant, I just thought cabaret was sexy, girls in stockings, slightly illicit atmosphere and it turned out to be a very expensive vision,” laughs Alex. “It is very expensive running a cabaret and we spend £5,000 a week on just entertainment. But it is a good concept and I have just started really liking it; at first I hated it because I am quite a perfectionist, and it took a while to get it to what I wanted it to be.” Despite only opening its doors in November 2009, Proud Cabaret has quickly earned a reputation as one of the City’s most lavish cabaret and burlesque hotspots, taking partygoers back to the Roaring Twenties Speakeasy era with its decadent décor and exquisite food and drinks menus. The venue has attracted celebrity regulars such Helena Christensen, Graham Norton and Alice Dellal, with its authentic vintage interior of plush booths, leathered upholstered seating and velvet curtains, as well as a recently added raised VIP area of tiered banquettes overlooking the stage. Launched in the City with the idea that city-dwellers would flock to it, it seems Alex didn’t quite get what he was hoping for, despite doing his research and polling the clientele Proud Cabaret was intended for. “We were aiming for early evening City trade and the lunch time City workers and we picked up none of that. The premium we pay to be in the City is a waste of money because we don’t get City people; instead it is 70 per cent female groups out celebrating and having a good time,” explains Alex. “I think there are the city boys who don’t want any kind of risqué and so they are terrified that this is too risqué for them, and then the ones who do want risqué want to go to some sawdust, tits and arse club and this isn’t risqué enough for them; so we fall into a rock and a hard place in the City.” But in spite of not luring in the City crowd, Proud Cabaret has become a popular haunt for those wanting West End service without having to go to > 67

PROUD CABARET’S SQUASH RISOTTO the West End. Saturday nights are always sold out evenings, and thanks to a large kitchen extension this year, the venue is now able to hold up to 250 covers, establishing Proud Cabaret as a major fine dining restaurant in the area. I ask Alex how he knows when he’s got things right? “I am quite good at second guessing what people will like, and even with photography and picking shows I normally got it right what people wanted to see,” says Alex with a smile. “I think that might be a skill I have, I don’t have many but I think it might be a skill that thankfully I do have.” It seems with London already conquered on the Proud map, and Alex’s expansion plans underway with Manchester, Bristol, Glasgow and New York in the firing line, along with his latest idea of a Proud Hotel, it seems Alex isn’t quiet finished spreading the Proud word. As I leave his office, he admits to me what it is about the business that he thrives on the most: “Life would be really dull if it was all about logical decisions, and half the fun of being me is that I can be quite random and I enjoy that, even if it is not the quickest way to become wealthy.” www.proud.co.uk
SERVES: 2
INGREDIENTS For the stock
1 litre vegetable stock 2 cloves garlic Pinch of saffron strands 2 tbsp white wine Roasted skin of the butternut squash Sage stocks 250g-300g, butternut squash peeled for the risotto
For the risotto
50g butter 100g Riso Gallo Carnaroli Risotto Rice 50g fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 10g fried sage leaf 50g Mascarpone cheese 25g Parmigiano-Reggiano, grated, plus extra shavings to serve 100g 2cm dice of roasted butternut squash
Method
1. For the stock, place the vegetable stock in a large pan with the garlic, saffron, white wine and squash skin and sage stocks. Bring it to the boil, and then simmer for 5-10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, cut the squash into 1cm dice, and then add to the stock. Continue to simmer the stock for about 10 minutes until the squash is just tender. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the squash to a plate and set aside. Then remove and discard the garlic cloves. 3. To make the risotto, melt half the butter in a heavy-based pan, add the rice and stir it well with a wooden spoon on a low heat for 1 minute. Gradually ladle in the hot stock a little at a time, stirring constantly and ensuring that each addition has been fully absorbed by the rice before adding another ladleful. 4. When the rice is just tender, about 15-20 minutes, stir in the cooked squash. Keep adding the remaining stock for about 5 minutes or until the rice is creamy and the stock is absorbed. Stir in the chopped parsley, Parmigiano-Reggiano, mascarpone and the rest of the butter. Season and serve topped with cheese shavings, fried sage and dice of roasted butternut squash.

Restaurant Review
A TASTE OF SICILY Carrie Mitchell discovers that once is definitely not enough at Islington’s most sophisticated Italian restaurant.
T
ucked away round a corner from Angel Station, Di Montfort is a charming family-run Italian, which has managed to remain something of a culinary secret in bustling Islington. The classic Sicilian menu, stylish interior, and quiet location lends it a more exclusive vibe than the strip of busy restaurants lining Upper Street, however it seems that word is most definitely starting to get out. Arriving early on a Tuesday evening, I wasn’t surprised to find the place deserted but by the time we’d ordered just ten minutes or so later, it was quickly beginning to fill up. With a staff of just two, a busy restaurant could have been a disaster but the competent and uber-friendly pair handled their diners with so much care, no one minded waiting a little longer. Most of all not us – we were too busy getting stuck into a bottle of yummy prosecco and an overflowing bread basket! Filled with a variety of scrumptious Italian breads, ciabatta, and breadsticks and accompanied by a pot of rich aubergine caponata, this was literally the best breadbasket I’d ever seen – and predictably, we DEMOLISHED it. Just as I swept up the last crumb with my
greedy paw, our starter arrived. The impressive platter of antipasto for two featured wafer thin slices of parma ham and salami, chunks of creamy mozzarella, a mound of chargrilled peppers, aubergines, artichokes, and courgettes – and two slices of beautiful bruschetta (just in case we hadn’t had enough bread.) Simple, full of flavour, and utterly moreish, it was a promising start, which only continued with our main courses. Over the table, my companion’s Rigatoni alla Norma was an earthy pasta dish with a flavourful aubergine and tomato sauce, pepped up with fresh basil and melting mozzarella. If I hadn’t been so daunted by the size of my own main course – the Costolette D’Agnello - I would certainly have been helping her out with more than one forkful. But as it was, I had an overwhelming SIX lamb cutlets to get through myself! The tender meat was grilled with herbs and white wine, topped with a delicious knob of garlic butter and served atop crisp roast potatoes and silky greens. It was a simple, unpretentious and a delicious dish, which was completely satisfying… until I spotted the seafood risotto being delivered to a neighbouring table and was struck by the green-eyed monster.
I’m a notorious victim of food envy and the sight of the huge steaming bowls of risotto speckled with giant mussels, prawns, squid, and clams had done it again. I was so jealous I knew there was only one thing that might make me feel better – pudding. Turning my attention to the dessert menu, I was met with another quandary. There may have been only four desserts listed but every one of them was a winning Italian classic – my old favourite, tiramisu; a delicious-sounding amaretto and nut semi-freddo; lemon sorbet topped with icy limoncello; or a simple affogato. There was no way I could choose so I pleaded with our helpful server to make a decision for me, and he went one better, promising a special chef’s selection. The dish he delivered was indulgent, sweet, sticky, and could have been perfect, if it were not for one glaring omission – none of that yummy Italian trifle! And this is why I’m going back next week…for seafood risotto followed by a super-sized portion of tiramisu. What is it they say again? One good turn deserves another. AN INTIMATE APPROACH Taking on a more direct relationship with art, Johann Bournot launched Zero10 with the aim of working closely with emerging artists, whilst providing an accessible platform for collectors. The private gallery selects contemporary artists who are then showcased within the intimate surrounding of Johann’s home. What made you launch Zero10? After looking for work for a few months in the midst of the recession, I felt ready to realise my dream. Also, I was inspired at a preview by meeting Gordon Cheung and Piers Secunda (both artists that I really wanted to be introduced to, but never dreamt of working with them) and the rest is history… What were you doing previous to running your own gallery? I have always been behind the scenes, working at White Cube taking care of Mr Hirst and Mr Gormley’s artworks, as well as a portfolio of high-profile clients/ collectors. I have also been an assistant curator at Musée d’Orsay in Paris. What is the concept behind Zero10 Gallery? The concept is to exhibit exciting and relevant artists within the surrounding of a domestic space; stripping away the “white cube” concept to present art in a personal context and inviting the viewer to linger and appreciate the artwork at his own pace. Where does the name Zero 10 come from? For certain reasons, dating back from my university time, I had this obsession with Russian artist Kasimir Malevich, who in 1915 had an exhibition called 0,10 and so I that is what I decided to name the gallery. What is different about Zero10 from other galleries? Informality and lack of pomposity; going the extra mile in terms of personal service, for example personal delivery and installation, viewings with decent wine. I like to share the excitement of being surrounded by art. I invite the viewers/collectors to
be part of a living atmosphere that is contemporary art. At the end of the day, it’s all about the relationship between the artists, the collector and me. What is Zero10’s ethos? I have a personal vision and that’s what Zero10 is all about. The most important thing is that I am optimistic. How do you decide which artists to exhibit? My main interest is to collaborate with artists while enjoying their trust, and their friendship. Artists whose work I enjoy and whom I get on with on a personal level make my job very enjoyable. There is a lot of excellent art that is very immediately accessible if you go deeper, and also it can be very intellectually satisfying. What exhibitions to you have coming up in September? I will have an exhibition on Drawings vs Editions, including works by Gordon Cheung, Peter Lamb, Piers Secunda, Adam Ball, Annabel Emson, Nikola Savik plus other guest artists. Should you want to start a collection, drawings and editions are a good entry to art (prices will start at £55 for a unique multiple). I know that Gordon Cheung will take as much energy and quality care
to produce his editions as he does his paintings – you would be surprised by the number of rejects in his studio. What do you enjoy about running your own gallery? What I find most interesting in running my gallery is the adventure of it all, which includes the emotions, choices, and the relationships with the artists/collectors that each day brings with it. What is art to you? Ernst Beyler said it best, “Surrounding oneself with art – this is true wealth” Who are your favourite artists? There are so many! The untouchables are Paolo Uccelo, Manet and Malevitch. The new kids on the block are Gordon Cheung, Danny Rolph and Piers Secunda. When you are not working what are you doing? I am very lucky that my wife’s passion is fine wine and that she makes a living out of it with her company, Bordeaux Index. So, I am always happy to partake in the great wine courses that the company runs. What are your future plans for Zero10? For November I am working on a solo exhibition with Nikola Savik that will be in Central London, at St James Church, Piccadilly. This is such a beautiful building; it is the perfect atmosphere for this series of his work. Also, part of the sales will go to the charity church to fund their restoration appeal. 020 7281 9030, www.zero10gallery.com exhibition@zero10gallery.com 75

THE ALFA CENTURION One hundred years ago, Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili built its first car. The company is still with us, though these days it’s better known as Alfa Romeo. Its latest car is the Giulietta. Is it, asks Matthew Carter, a worthy birthday present to itself?
A
couple of decades ago, few would have bet on Alfa Romeo making it to the end of the week, let alone to its 100th birthday. Yet here we are celebrating Alfa’s centenary. That the company has survived, despite pedalling some pretty dodgy cars in the recent past, says more about Alfa’s fans than the company itself. Without those fans staying faithful to the badge through thick and a lot of thin, Alfa would be no more than a footnote in history. But then, as Jeremy Clarkson once said, to be a true petrolhead you need to have owned an Alfa at some point in your motoring career. In that case I’m in. I’ve had three, including a 1960
Giulietta Sprint Veloce that I’ve had for 25 years, and that’s just about to emerge from an 18-month stint at the restorers. Thing is, despite being a fully paid up Alfisti, I haven’t bought a new Alfa for 20 years… but that might be about to change. To celebrate its centenary, Alfa has revived the Giulietta name. Again. The original, like mine, was the car that ushered in the modern Alfa, yet was reassuringly expensive: in the early 1960s, this left-hand drive only 1.3-litre coupé cost more than an E-type Jag. Little wonder it sold in small numbers. The second Giulietta was a weirdlooking, wedge-shaped saloon from the late 1970s and, thanks in part to a reputation for unreliability, rust and
poor build quality, it, too, sold in small numbers. I owned one of those as well. And now comes the third iteration of the name. The latest Giulietta is a thoroughly modern, five-door hatchback powered by a range of advanced engines. It looks good, drives well and should no longer be plagued by any negatives that scuppered the previous generation Giulietta. But despite all that, sales will never be huge. Alfa is expecting annual sales of around 6,000 in the UK. To put that in perspective, in the first six months of the year, Ford shifted more than 48,000 Focus models. Higher sales doesn’t necessarily mean better, though… ask any smug Apple owner what they think of a PC.
76
CA SEPT 10 MOTORING ALFA.indd 76
30/08/2010 00:08
Motoring And that’s just the case here. The newest Alfa is, at last, a car worthy of the badge and the fact that there’ll be comparatively few around is a bonus for buyers who see themselves as individuals, rather than followers. There are five engine options powering the Giulietta, two diesels and three petrols, and four trim levels: Turismo, Lusso, Veloce and Cloverleaf. The latter is the top of the range and is powered by a turbocharged 1750cc petrol engine that delivers a heady 235 bhp. But, for once, I’m going to ignore the performance variant as well as both 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels and instead concentrate on the best of the bunch, which is powered by a sophisticated, turbocharged MultiAir petrol engine, as found in many new Alfas and Fiats. It might only displace 1.4-litres, but in the Giulietta it develops 170bhp and up to 250 nm of torque – figures you’d expect from a much larger engine. Remarkably, this performance – 135mph max and 7.8 secs to 62mph and not far off the Cloverleaf – doesn’t come at the expense of fuel economy. In fact, the whole point of MultiAir technology is that allowing the engine to breathe more efficiently, it can deliver superior performance with diesel-like economy. Alfa reckons it’ll return almost 50 mpg on the combined cycle. So that’s two of the boxes ticked. And you can do the same in the box marked ‘ride and handling’. The Giulietta’s ride is soft and cosseting, yet the handling
is fun, sharp and largely roll-free, a remarkable achievement. The car’s safe, too: according to the independent NCAP test people, it’s the safest in the class. And it looks different. The famous Alfa grille is bigger than ever and gives the Giulietta real presence, while the side profile has an almost coupé look, thanks to the hidden rear door handles. Life inside the Giulietta is pretty good. There’s a modern mix of metal surfaces, leather and quality plastics, while a nice touch seen in recent Alfas and continued here is the labelling of the instruments – benzina, oilo and so on – so much more evocative than the English equivalent. The driving position, a weakness in Alfas of old, is just fine, though there’s not that much room in the rear for the long of leg. As a package, then, there’s not too much to complain about. Until you get to the price list. At first glance, the Veloce version gets most of what you need, including Alfa’s
DNA (Dynamic, Normal, Allweather) mode control, which sharpens up the throttle response and steering (Dynamic) when the mood takes, and softens everything down (All-weather) when conditions are treacherous. It also has sports suspension, Stop/ Start technology, part leather trim, dual zone climate control, alloy wheels and Blue&Me, Alfa’s Bluetooth hand-free system with voice recognition, and a USB input port for the media player in exchange for £20,795. But once you hit the options, the sky’s the limit. A fully integrated satnav is a £1,200 option, which is fair enough, but if you want a colourful Giulietta, you’ll have to pay extra: the only ‘free’ colour is solid black; even Alfa Red will cost you an extra £490. Parking sensors, heated seats, automatic lights and wipers – all extras. Maybe that doesn’t matter, though. The one thing the Giulietta has as standard is exclusivity… and that’s something you won’t find on the options lists of virtually all its rivals. Happy birthday, Alfa.

GET-AWAY PART TWO Greek
Continuing her ventures of the Greek Islands, Jessica Batten discovers the traditional island of Santorini and relaxes in the ‘Garden of Eden’

efore setting off, we had read several reviews on Perivolas, each and every one as complimentary as the other, so, as we crept up the winding roads of Santorini, our anticipation and excitement grew to see what is commonly described as a ‘Garden of Eden’. When we finally arrived, we were certainly not disappointed; even in the darkness of night we knew we were somewhere special. Perivolas was established over 40 years ago when Sea Captain, Manos Psychas and wife Nadia purchased a piece of the cliff formed of fishermen’s’ cave dwellings and stables. Their dream was to create an idyllic retreat on their beloved island. Now run by their son Kostis, the hotel hosts 20 suites, set in the cliffs of Oia. The Aladdin-like caved accommodation ranges from studios, junior and deluxe suites to the beautiful Presidential Suite. By preserving original features, Perivolas maintains a traditional look, whilst adding a few modern features to cater for guests’ needs. However, none of the rooms have televisions, just a CD player, creating a relaxing oasis. There is also no wi-fi in the rooms, but a computer is free to use in reception. The complete absence of pictures on the whitewashed walls highlights the magnificent view out of the windows. The meditative silence is enhanced by the fact that no children under 16 are allowed. Upon waking the next morning, after sipping coffee in bed and admiring the stunning views out of our windows, we went for breakfast at the restaurant, once an age-old wine cellar. The complementary breakfast was delicious, with a selection of fresh fruit, cereals, hot dishes and pastries. The restaurant overlooks the famous infinity pool, which appears to merge with the glinting blue waters of the Aegean Sea – it’s not hard to see why it regularly features on magazine covers – the breathtaking view, coupled with the refreshing coolness of the water provides the ultimate setting of relaxation. Better yet, there is no need to get up early and lay claim to sun beds with your towel, as each of the suites has its own terrace, leaving plenty of space by the pool. If you are lucky enough to have the Presidential Suite, you won’t even need to venture down to the pool, as it has its own – extending from the bedroom to your
private terrace. It also boasts a Jacuzzi and steam room, and there are even two double beds! If all this isn’t enough to keep you occupied, you can refresh your body and soul in the Wellness Centre. Here there is a state-of-the-art gym (again, overlooking the stunning views), openair Jacuzzi, sauna, and massage room for health and beauty treatments. There are a variety of treatments available, including massage and facials that will send you into a state of bliss. What made this stay for us by far was the excellent service. From the small things like the cleaners washing my toiletry bag after my shampoo exploded on the aeroplane, to the reception staff booking our ferry for us; everyone was friendly and helpful. They even offered a free airport/ferry pick-up and drop-off. Whilst you might think there isn’t much reason to leave the hotel, Santorini is arguably one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands. Formed entirely from volcanic rock, it is the result of the massive Minoan eruption of 1645. The local town of Oia (just a short walk from the hotel), known for its quiet life and beautiful sunsets, should not be missed. It is a traditional village with charming houses in narrow streets, blue-domed churches, and sun-drenched verandas. Its
streets have plenty of tourist shops, tavernas, cafés, and restaurants. We spent the evening enjoying local seafood and wine on the roof terrace of a restaurant called 1800, a preserved mansion built in 1845. A warm and friendly ambience circulates this restaurant and the service was great; to the tune of an impromptu vegetarian dish made for me there on the spot. Most of the restaurants in Oia have roof terraces so you can enjoy the famous sunset, but they can get very busy, so make sure you book in advance. As we wandered back to our hotel and enjoyed a drink on our terrace staring out at the sea, I wandered how we could possibly wangle staying here forever – leaving would be difficult! My partner and I reflected on the dream of the Sea Captain and his wife all those years ago, and we made a toast to Manos and Nadia – this really was the ‘Garden of Eden’ we read about.

WHAT’S ON THE Wonderful WEB?
Iain Scott looks at the 3 best things on the net this month
Fashion Website of the month BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER
I’m a big fan of websites that merge the offline world with the online. Online offers so much more productivity and immediacy. And to demonstrate that point, let me bring your attention to www.bivolino.com: the online shirt design website. Although there are other products in their catalogue (ties, cufflinks, underwear etc.) their focus is on shirts for both men and women. Using their smart and 3D online tool, you can customise your shirt in almost every way. Ever heard of a Kent Piping collar or a Convertible Barrel cuff? The options are endless for a truly unique result. There are literally millions of variations. Community Website of the month RESTLESS DEVELOPMENT
The London based ‘Youth-led Development Agency’ have done some fantastic work all over the world and are made up mainly of young people. Having gone through a rebrand earlier on in the year, they are now really making an impression on both stakeholders and the international community it helps. Restless Development is driven forward by young people and young professionals around the world. More than 1,000 young men and women, with an average age of 21 years, lead the direct delivery of our programmes in communities across SubSaharan Africa and South Asia. They are led by young people not just at a community level. Their professional full-time staff model is an extension of the
youth-led mission: the average age of the 200 staff around the world is 25 years, the average age of their senior management is only 33. So, if you’re looking to make a life changing decision and get involved in community work all over the world, take a look at www. restlessdevelopment.org and make yourself known.
Payment Website of the month SHARE YOUR LOVE
In my industry, there are loads of free websites all offering valuable (almost indispensable) tools. Take Google, Facebook and others like last.fm. Many survive on advertising, but a few unknown others rely on help and support from people like you and me. Introducing flattr.com, one of the web’s first ‘micropayment’ systems. Websites that use the flattr badge can accept tiny payments from your flattr account. The idea being that if enough people like the website (or online service), the cumulative micropayments will add up and allow the website owner to continue to provide it. Maybe you run a website or a blog. Allowing others to make tiny payments as ‘thanks’ could allow you to continue running your website and make it worth while financially. Take a look and see how others are being flattr’d. www.flattr.com Iain Scott is managing director of Islington based web design agency, Base Creative. Iain’s role is helping businesses make more of their online marketing. If you have a suggestion for a featured website, email Iain personally at iain.scott@basecreative.eu.

ASK THE EXPERT Local experts
Colman Coyle Solicitors
answer your legal property questions
I wish to extend the lease of my flat and have obtained a valuation. I have written to my landlord several times to extend my lease but have not received a response. What should I do next? I assume that you have the correct address for the Landlord? By law, a Landlord is obliged to let you have details of his/her address and this is usually contained in your ground rent and service charge demand. If so, I would advise that you consider exercising your rights to force the Landlord to grant you a lease term extension. Your rights are contained in legislation known as the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993. Subject to meeting criteria, you can serve a document known as a Notice of Claim which sets out your proposals for acquiring a lease term extension, including the price you are prepared to offer the Landlord. The Landlord is obliged to respond to the Notice of Claim by a date that your solicitor will refer to in the Notice of Claim. If the Landlord does not respond, then you may be able to apply to Court for a declaration that the terms upon which the Landlord should grant you a lease term extension is as per your Notice of Claim. You shall see that it is in the Landlord’s interests to make sure he responds to the Notice of Claim. Hopefully, this will bring to an end the impasse that you have reached. I am buying a property and was wondering if I need a survey? You do not say what type of property you are buying. If you are obtaining a mortgage to buy a property, then it is very likely that a valuer will inspect the property on behalf of your lender. Whilst the report gives an indication about the value of the property and if it is worth the amount that you are borrowing, you will probably not be allowed to rely on the lender’s valuation report. The report also may or may not be a comprehensive one. For example, it may not cover those issues that are of concern to you. You should consider either via your mortgage company or independently to arrange for a valuer to carry out a detailed survey known as a Home Buyer’s Report. This report would highlight issues for your solicitors to consider, perhaps identify risks such as structural movement, damp, and timber defects. It would also advise on the current market value. If the property is old or perhaps has undergone a lot of redevelopment then you may consider obtaining a full structural survey report.
