lthough this is the first month of many when the notion of going out is a possibility, we at Absolutely are focusing on interiors. The irony's not lost on us, but clearly our homes still matter. Judging by the amount of scaffolding up on houses all over London, and by the reported shortage of materials, everyone is still refurbishing and renovating in pursuit of the perfect home – and we are reflecting that in our 50-page Home special. In it we look at everything from colour and pattern to mattress comfort, via windowboxes, ceramics, paint shades and even dog beds. We take an extensive look at the capital's best new extensions and discover what it's like when your house is used as a film location; we find out about Henry Holland's new interest in pottery and consider how best to store books. And we look outside the home too, discucssing subjects as diverse as post-partum psychosis with Laura Dockrill and piercing with Connie Nam, while eating and drinking our way around town. Enjoy June.

he much anticipated exhibition is open to the public from 22nd May We first met Alice in 1865 in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. Over 150 years later, the book has seen countless reinventions, including Walt Disney’s 1951 film adaptation as well as Tim Burton’s 2010 dark-fantasy esque portrayal. The V&A’s exhibition, taking place in the Sainsbury Gallery, is set to be their ‘most ambitious yet’, aiming to ‘inspire visitors to conjure their own ideas of wonderland’. Originally set to open in 2020, there has been a huge amount of anticipation surrounding the event. The exhibition will be made up of over 300 objects and five sections: Creating Alice, Filming Alice, Reimagining Alice,

ARTIST ANNA GASKELL, SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM (C) COURTESY OF GALERIE GISELA CAPITAIN, COLOGNE. PHOTO CREDIT: VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM, LONDON

Staging Alice and finally, Being Alice. Each ‘Alice-inspired world’ will explore key themes relating to the title including film, performance, fashion, music, art and photography. Creating Alice will transport visitors right back to the origins of the story, exploring Victorian London and the people, politics and places that inspired the character. Fashion lovers will be able to marvel at Alice inspired fashion collections from Iris Van Herpen and Viktor & Rolf, while the 2018 Pirelli Calendar – which has been described as ‘chaotic - in the best possible way’ – will also feature in the exhibit.

Reimagining Alice is set to be a particularly eclectic part of the collection, celebrating the surrealist works of Salvador Dali and featuring a life-sized Mad Hatter’s tea party, bought to life with psychedelic and playful digital projections. The exhibition will also be the first ever by the V&A to offer a virtual reality experience, inviting guests to the Queen of Hearts’ croquet ground for a Curious Game Of Croquet. The experience was produced by immersive games studio Preloaded and will of course offer fun for all the family. The final section of the exhibition, Being Alice, will explore the 'the modernday fascination and reinvention of Alice In Wonderland across art, science and popular culture. The Being Alice section of the exhibit will feature photos from political protests, album artwork for British rapper Little Simz and Alice-inspired street wear garments. Being Alice will demonstrate the varied interpretations of Alice In Wonderland through the ages. Finally, guests will be invited to leave through the looking glass. The exhibition will end on a 'through the looking glass-inspired' digital art exhibition, set to be a huge hit with art lovers. 2021 marks the books 150th anniversary,

“A Mad Hatter’s tea party is bought to life with psychedelic projections” and there has been countless reinventions of the story over the years. Through all adaptations of Alice In Wonderland, the main themes have been apparent: Identity, coming of age and absurdity. The story depicts a young girl ‘falling through the looking glass’ into a crazy and colourful world – think talking rabbits and magic potions. Living in London in the current day can sometimes be a stressful and tiresome experience and many of us are guilty of taking life too seriously. Sometimes we need to slow down and take a second to enjoy life and all its absurdities. The V&A invites you to explore a different world for a day. Kate Bailey, Senior Curator of Theatre and Performance at the V&A, sai: ‘We look forward to welcoming visitors of all ages into Alice’s magical and mind-bending wonderland, to imagine their own world on the other side of the looking glass’. The Royale

The new event that will change what you know about luxury cars By MARK KEBBLE

22

EVENT DIRECTOR PAUL MATHERS

I

t’s hard enough staging a new event without having to deal with a global pandemic along the way, something the founder of Auto Royale, Paul Mathers, knows only too well. “For any event organiser, COVID has been an overwhelming challenge and most of us, despite not being able to deliver events, have had to get by on little or no support – Auto Royale is no exception,” he says. “As a start-up with a new event we have been pushed to the limit and our innovation and problem-solving has been really tested. But, right now, summer looks clear for us to restart.” It is indeed time to look forward, not back, and Auto Royale is certainly an event that will help banish lingering memories of lockdown. Being staged from 16-18 July at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, this promises to be something car enthusiasts have not experienced before. “Concours d’Elegance events have been around for many years, and many have fallen into step with a

certain paradigm,” Mathers takes up the idea behind his event. “With the exception of the cars on the field, which are always a joy for an enthusiast, the rest of the event runs the risk of being predictable and underwhelming. Auto Royale seeks to subvert people’s expectations. “If other events aim to be traditional, then Auto Royale is contemporary. If others are snobby or elitist, Auto Royale aims to be high quality and inclusive. If another has a soundtrack of jazz, then ours will be of Bowie. I’ve often said that if other events are ‘the Queen’, then Auto Royale is ‘Queen’, the band. We want to take some of the stiffness out of concours and make it fun.” ALFA ROMEO 8C

“We want to take some of the stiffness out of concours and make it fun” Who would he say the event is aimed at? “Anyone who really loves cars, history, storytelling, great art and design – because the stories behind great cars capture all of these things,” Mathers replies. “Auto Royale is an event where you can meet your like-minded friends and celebrate the path back to normality, or meet new friends and connections through a mutual love of motoring.” There’s sure to be some truly magnificent motors on show in a stunning setting. “The Concours d’Elegance is essentially a beauty pageant for cars, and they range from vintage (1910) through to contemporary (2015),” Mathers says. “Over 100 cars will compete for Best in Show, and

many of them are already award winners from other events. Some are one-offs, some are very low production numbers, and some have been famous racers or have been owned by celebrities. Some of these cars have never even been seen in the UK before, and some are worth tens of millions of pounds. The common factor that unites them is that they all possess a special story – and Auto Royale is where they get to tell that story.”

Singapore Fried Noodles with purple sprouting broccoli Serves 2

This is great as part of a feast, weekend brunch or a midweek special. Swap out broccoli for any other seasonal vegetables or herbs.

INGREDIENTS For the sauce • 1 tsp caster (superfine) sugar • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp oyster sauce • 2 tsp sesame oil For the omelette • 2 eggs, beaten • 1 spring onion (scallion), sliced diagonally • 1 cm (½ in) thick • Pinch of caster (superfine) sugar • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper • 1 tsp soy sauce • 1 tsp vegetable oil • 1 small round shallot, sliced For the noodles • 2 tbsp oil, for frying • ½ bird’s eye chilli or 1 whole red chilli, finely chopped • 2 round shallots, roughly chopped • 10 dried shrimp, soaked in boiling water for 10–15 minutes until soft, then drained (optional) • 70–100 g (3–3½ oz) purple sprouting broccoli, sliced, bite-sized • 150 g (5 oz) fine rice vermicelli (0.8 mm), soaked in cold water for 5 minutes, then drained • 100 g (3½ oz) beansprouts • 1½ tbsp Vietnamese curry powder • 100 g (3½ oz) cooked king prawns • 100 g (3½ oz) Roast Barbecued Pork (see below), roughly chopped (optional) • 20 g (¾ oz) garlic chives, cut into 5 cm (2 in) pieces • Freshly ground black pepper

METHOD Mix together the sauce ingredients and set aside. 2 In a small bowl, combine all the omelette ingredients except the shallots. Set aside. 3 In a large frying pan or wok, gently fry the shallots with a dash of oil over a medium heat until golden, then pour the egg mixture over and fry until set. Remove from the pan, slice into 1 cm (½ in) strips and set aside. 4 Place the same pan back over a medium heat, pour in 1 tablespoon 1

of oil and fry the chopped chilli, shallots and dried shrimp together for a minute until soft. Then turn to a high heat, adding the purple sprouting broccoli and continue to fry for a further 3 minutes, shaking the pan and charring the edges. 5 Still on a high heat, add the beansprouts for 30 seconds, then the noodles, mix together and stirfry for a couple of minutes. Pour in the sauce ingredients and evenly sprinkle with the curry powder, covering the noodles all over and mixing well together for 2 minutes. 6 Add the omelette to the pan with the cooked prawns and continue stir-frying for a further 3 minutes, or until the noodles are soft. Turn off the heat and mix in the garlic chives. Season with black pepper and serve immediately.

favourites, making great additions to many meals. You can also use water or chicken stock instead of white wine.

INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 30 g (1 oz) ginger root, julienned • 1 Asian or small round shallot, sliced • 2 red chillies, finely chopped • 15 g (½ oz) butter • 1 tsp fish sauce • 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 4–6 anchovies, coarsely chopped • 50 g (2 oz) cavolo nero, sliced 3 cm (1 in) thick • 100 g (3½ oz) baby courgettes (zucchini), halved lengthways • 100 g (3½ oz) tenderstem broccoli, sliced diagonally 3 cm (1 in) thick • 100 g (3½ oz) fine green beans, topped and tailed • 75 ml (2½ fl oz / ¼ cup) white wine

METHOD

Hot & Fiery Greens with anchovies Serves 2-4

You can use a variety of vegetables for this or just one kind; the garlic, ginger and anchovies will lift the vegetables to another level and you’ll find that these vegetable sides become household

1 Have a wok or large frying pan (skillet) on high heat and get it hot. Add the vegetable oil, ginger, shallot and chillies and cook for 2 minutes until lightly golden. 2 Add the butter, fish sauce, garlic and anchovies – stir, fry, toss. Add the vegetables and let sit for 1 minute to char. Toss again, then leave to sit for another 1 minute. 3 Finally, add the white wine – if your pan is hot, this should create some flames. 4 Leave to sit for a couple of minutes then cover with a lid for 1 minute. The vegetables should be soft but still retain some bite. Serve immediately.

Chicken Pho Makes 4-5 bowls

Easy to pull together, this is a favourite among the young, the old and everyone in between, all across the world. This is a much lighter fragrant pho. Among the Vietnamese, the rules are strict with the flavours of pho – but don’t let that stop you. It is okay if you don’t have all the spices, but it is important to have star anise. Make ahead broth 5 days Herbs & noodles 2–3 days

INGREDIENTS • 2.5 litres (88 fl oz/10 cups) water or enough to cover the chicken • 1 corn-fed, free-range chicken (about 1.5 kg/ 2 lb 4 oz)

• 1 large onion, cut at both ends to stand • 150 g (5 oz) ginger root, halved • 10 cm (4 in) daikon or parsnip (optional) • 15 star anise (10–15 g/½ oz) • 4 whole cloves • 1 cinnamon stick • 2 black cardamom pods (optional but good to have) • 1 tbsp coriander seeds in a ball strainer or small muslin infuser • 30 g (1 oz) rock sugar or 1 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar • 15 g (½ oz/1 tbsp) sea salt • 4 tbsp fish sauce (or more to taste) • 1 chicken stock cube • 75 g (2½ oz) dry flat rice noodles per serving or fresh ho fun noodles • Freshly ground black pepper For the garnish • Coriander (cilantro) leaves, torn or coarsely chopped • 3 spring onions (scallions), white and green parts, sliced lengthways, soaked in cold water until curled • 1 red or white onion, thinly sliced

1 Measure the water into a saucepan just large enough to hold the chicken and bring to the boil. 2 Trim off any excess skin and fat around the cavity and neck of the chicken, then submerge in the boiling water. To achieve a clear broth, once the pot comes back to the boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes, occasionally skimming off impurities. 3 In a griddle or frying pan over a high heat, char the onion, ginger and daikon or parsnip on both sides, then add to the broth. Use the same pan to toast the spices until fragrant, then add them to the broth with the stock cubes, sugar and salt. Simmer for a further 30 minutes until the chicken is cooked. 4 Remove the chicken from the liquid and check that the juices run clear when you pierce the thigh. Set aside to cool. Remove the vegetables, bones and spices from the broth and discard. Separate the meat from the carcass and slice the chicken against the grain into bite-sized pieces. 5 Cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Divide the noodles among serving bowls. Place the sliced chicken on top, garnish with coriander, spring onion, red onion and basil leaves. Season with a pinch of pepper and a couple of slices of chilli, if using. 6 When ready to serve, season the broth with fish sauce, tasting with every spoonful to see if it’s to your liking. Bring to the boil, then ladle the hot broth into the bowls, making sure that all the ingredients are submerged. Serve immediately with a squeeze of lime and more of the garnishes.

ABSOLUTELY eats out…

ne day, we might look back nostalgically at the days of eating outdoors because we had to. Now that we’re back to indoor dining, and assuming things stay this way, we might never sit outside a restaurant in a downpour again. But when we visited Tavolino, the weather wasn’t kind to us. This Thameside spot carries impressive, expansive and even cinematic views of Tower Bridge and the London skyline, and with lots of outdoor seating it seemed like an ideal spot for the pandemic-inspired al fresco

DECOR dining movement. Blankets on each seat look inviting and cosy, and the scene is set for sunshine. By the time the rain set in, we were so well fed and enjoying the wine so much that all we needed was an umbrella to keep the mood going. We started with delicious cocktails – the best was Prugna Frizzante with Akashi-Tai plum sake, white grape and apricot soda, prosecco, and large juicy Sicilian olives. To start, we had a summery Devon crab, buffalo ricotta, endive and pistachio dressing, which was fresh, sweet and tangy, plus a crispy pizzette with burrata, tomato and black olive. fritti arrived at the next table looking so inviting, an elegantly stacked and perfectly fried heap of battered and deep fried courgette strips, that we had to have that too. Juicy, salty and full of texture, this was a moreish number. Main courses were porcini, ricotta and chestnut ravioli and pan-seared sea bream with agrodolce salad and caper sauce. The ravioli was rich and intensely mushrooms, and the fish silky and fresh. For pudding, we shared a smooth amaretto panna cotta and were finishing our espressos when the rain started. Inside, the restaurant was empty but out of bounds, and yet we were outside with no shelter and entirely exposed.Still, rather than abandon the rest of our wine, we accepted the offer of a vast umbrella and pulled our blankets over us. Next time, we’d opt for a pod – though ideally next time, we hope, we’ll be eating inside. TAVO L I N 0 2 More London Riverside, SE1; 020 8194 1037

Boxtails The letterbox cocktail delivery company By PENDLE HARTE

C

ocktail deliveries were devised during the pandemic and are set to become one of the legacies of lockdown, because they're definitely here to stay. Like Moonshine drinkers during Prohibition, cocktail lovers have spent the past year trying to recreate the ceremony, the recipes and the buzz of a new cocktail. And when our own attempts have been lacking, countless companies have been tailoring their wares to our need. Cocktail deliveries range from elaborate bar kits to simple, ready mixed concoctions for instant gratification and maximum variety. The latest one to come through our letterbox is Boxtails, which literally does fit through the letterbox – this will soon become significant as we all begin to leave our houses again and re-experience the missed delivery. Our box of six ready-to-pour pouches included a passionfruit Martini, a Negroni, a Gimlet, a WooWoo, a Daiquiri and a blood orange Mojito, along with a list of serving tips, specifying type of glass and type of garnish. Most pouches should be chilled before serving, ideally in the freezer for half an hour, and then they're ready to pour. There's also a dedicated Picnic Party Pack which includes eight fruity pouches and a corresponding playlist of tracks including Harry Styles' Watermelon Sugar and Robbie Williams' Candy. So picnic blankets at the ready: summer – we're coming for you. BOXTAILS

S H E’S A G E M Absolutely meets Connie Nam, founder of Astrid & Miyu, at her new Westbourne Grove store By PENDLE HARTE

Q You’ve just opened a new store in Notting Hill. How has business been in lockdown? I actually started my business here from a flat in Notting Hill so it’s like coming home. We had the shop all ready to go last November but we had to wait until now to acutally open it. Luckily the landlord has been very sweet. In lockdown we took everything online and sales were good – especially earrings, with people wanting to jazz up their ears for Zoom calls.

"I understood the customer because I was the customer”

Q What’s the secret of Astrid & Miyu’s success? My background was in investment banking but I was burnt out after four years and wanted to switch careers. Jewellery was a big part of what I grew up with – my mum was a magpie; she loved jewellery. I saw that at that time the mid-market brands were quite stale. I wanted to create a friendly environment where people could come and feel and touch things, like with clothing. I think I understood the customer because I was the customer. I’m now older than our customer but now our staff are the customers, and we always listen to them. Q Now you’re very much known for piercing. When did that happen? In 2018. We were getting a lot of people asking about piercing and it was on our

CONNIE NAM

feedback list every week. Then we went to New York and found that piercing parties were really popular. So we came home and applied for all the licenses and found a piercer – I thought we’d have a one-off party and just treat it as a marketing cost. It was really successful, so buzzy that we started doing it once a week and found it fully booked. We went up to twice a week, then three times, so we thought that maybe this could be our business. When we did pop-ups in New York people were queuing. It was fun because everyone was talking to each other – someone said it was like the girls’ bathroom in a cool nightclub. I thought, that’s exactly what we want! Q What about the collections? We have new collections every six weeks. The next one is all about fun and optimism, with gemstones and pearls. 80% of our business is earrings and the huggies sell really well. Q So what’s next? More shops. We’re in final negotiations for Coal Drops Yard and Kings Road, and also Cambridge and Brighton.

MANE attraction e’ve all been there: you secure an appointment with your hairdresser, excited to unveil a brand new look, only to leave feeling less than glamorous. There is more to deciding on a hair colour than just picking out a shade you like. Skin tone plays an important role, and it’s basic rule of thumb that those with a cooler skin tone should stick to a shade with cooler undertones while those with warm skin tones will match with a colour with warm undertones. Vita Krafty, long time hairdresser based at Head Spa salon, shares her advice on choosing the correct hair colour. ‘Most people come in wanting to go blonde or refresh their blonde shade. Platinum shades always work best on porcelain-skinned girls, whereas more gold or caramel-based blonde shades look great on those with cooler undertones, too. For those wanting a fresh new brunette shade, fortunately brown hair is a flattering option for most skin tones, while deep brown and black hair looks amazing on those with darker skin tones. For those deciding between blonde and brunette, a balayage is a great way of combining the best of both worlds’. For colour maintenance, choose the correct shampoo and conditioner for your shade. Purple shampoo works wonders for blondes, whereas products for brunette hair add shine and dimension. HEAD SPA

BACK TO THE OFFICE Safeguarding your mental health and those around you

T

he last 15 months has been an unprecedented, challenging and unpredictable time for us all, and has impacted our physical as well as our mental health. Research by premium health insurer Bupa Global, as part of its Executive Wellbeing Index,1 has found that that 70% of high net worth individuals around the world have experienced symptoms of mental ill-health since the start of the pandemic. As businesses start to welcome their staff back to offices, leaders face a double challenge; not only must they manage their own mental health, they also have a duty of care to look after their employees.

ADDRESSING STIGMAS

Stigmas and misconceptions can delay people from getting help when it comes to mental health – so it’s vital to tackle them. Indeed, business leaders have a

58

responsibility to break down the stigmas associated with mental health issues like stress and anxiety to ensure everyone can thrive at work. Dr Luke James, Medical Director at Bupa Global, tells us: “The first step is being open and honest, accepting our challenges, rather than brushing them under the carpet. Just because you’re successful, it doesn’t mean that everything is OK, and because there’s no one-size fits all approach to dealing with mental ill-health, expert support is essential.”

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Being an effective manager is about much more than simply delegating workloads and tracking performance against targets. It’s clear that a happy workforce is a more motivated and productive one – so the first step is talking about mental health openly and honestly. For Dr James, the key is viewing mental health for what it is – a problem with

someone’s health. “We find it normal, or at least easier, to talk about our physical illnesses than we do about how life, stress and mental ill-health affects our brain. But the truth is that speaking up about mental health in the workplace is the only way to break this stigma.” B U PA G LO B A L Bupa Global helps give you peace of mind, both at home and wherever in the world you choose to be treated, within your area of cover. t’s rare that anything positive ever stems from a car accident, however for Joanne Mathews, it led to the birth of her company Ten Health and Fitness. Challenged with back and pelvic pain post accident, Joanne realised there was a gap in the market for a service combining fitness with rehabilitation, and with that, Ten was born. Joanne launched her first flagship studio in 2007, in a Notting Hill basement. Fast forward 14 years and the company operates at 10 sites including Mayfair, Notting Hill and Chiswick, with plans for further expansion. The organisation operates on a unique Circle of Care system. Unlike other gyms and fitness centres, both trainers and therapists work collaboratively through every step of a client’s journey, including exercise, injury management and and rehabilitation services. Alongside this, the company offers an array of services from massage therapies to personal training. Faced with the prospect of having to close all venues on multiple occasions due to the pandemic, the company came up with innovative ideas to be able to continue to help clients at home, including live and on-demand classes. Matthews said ‘We’re so pleased that we have not just been able to operate and continue to provide our services to our clients throughout the past year, but we’ve also been able to continue our plans to grow and provide of our award-winning health and fitness services than ever before’. Ten's newest and highly aanticipated new studio recently opened at 9294 Notting Hill Gate, strengthening the brand's west London health and fitness offering. The space, a 3,700sq ft offering split across two floors, will offer Ten’s full suite of services. The studio will also be home to Ten’s boutique collection, a high quality curated fashion

collection with a focus on sustainability, alongside a selection of pilates equipment and wellness accessories. Creative director of Ten, Justin Rogers, commented: ‘Opening Ten’s tenth studio is a significant milestone for us, to have done it in Notting Hill makes it even more special for us. We're so excited to have been able to create a beautiful and welcoming environment where we can welcome new and existing clients, and help them to feel great and move better as they work out’. DESIGNS FOR LIFE

As a pioneer of modernist design, her work was often overshadowed by her male collaborators’

A new exhibition celebrates the life and work of the visionary Charlotte Perriand Words E V E H E R B E R T

O

pening this month at the Design Museum is a retrospective on the pioneering designer Cha rlotte Perria nd. The exhibition charts Perriand’s journey through the modernist machine aesthetic to her adoption of natural forms, and later from modular furniture to major architectural projects. Featuring large-scale reconstructions of some of her most famous interiors, as well as original furniture, her photography and personal notebooks, the exhibition sheds new light on Perriand’s creative process and her rightful place in design history. Curated in collaboration with the Perriand family and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, this exhibition falls on the 25th anniversary of the designer’s last significant presentation in London, held at the Design Museum in 1996. As a female pioneer of modernist design, Perriand’s work was often overshadowed by her more famous male collaborators, who included

72

Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Prouvé. However, in recent years her reputation as a furniture designer and architect has matched the stature of her peers – her furniture in particular has become highly prized by collectors. The exhibition is divided into three sections: The Machine Age, Nature and the Synthesis of the Arts, and Modular Design for Modern Living. Starting with the design of her own studio apartment in Saint-Sulpice, Paris, expect to see Perriand’s early mastery of metal furniture before she joined Le Corbusier’s studio. Explore the notebooks in which she developed the tubular steel furniture designed with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, which

would define 1920s modernism. Transported into the world of Perriand, sit in vivid one-to-one room recreations of the Salon d’Automne interior from 1929, reconstructed by Cassina, and the London branch of the Air France office designed in 1957. She believed: “Dwellings should be designed not only to satisfy material specifications; they should also create conditions that foster harmonious balance and spiritual freedom in people’s lives.” Justin McGuirk, Chief Curator said:“Charlotte Perriand was a hugely inf luential figure in design [though] long overshadowed by her male counterparts... this exhibition presents her as a brilliant designer who deserves wider recognition – she was also a natural collaborator and synthesiser. There is so much to admire not just in her work but in the way she lived her life.” The exhibition charts Perriand’s development of modular designs for more affordable and adaptable interiors. Modular furnishing systems were seen as the way forward during the post-war reconstruction of Europe. Most famously Perriand designed her iconic bibliotheques, or Proposition d’une synthèse des arts (Proposal for a Synthesis of the Arts), Takashimaya department store, Nihonbashi, Tokyo, 1955 bookcases, for fabrication by Jean © AChP/ © ADAGP, Paris and DACS, London 2021 Prouvé’s metal workshop. Originally intended for student dormitories such as the Maison du Mexique – recreated in the exhibition – these egalitarian metal shelving systems have ironically become highly prized collector’s items. Perriand was a keen hiker and skier, and the exhibition traces her love of travel and the outdoors in her work. It delves into her architecture,

which mostly catered to the grow ing demand for leisure and tourism, especially in her beloved mountains. Through architectural models, photographs and sketches, discover how Perriand sought to make the pleasures of nature accessible. The exhibition culminates in her grandest architectural project, the Les Arcs ski resort in France. Developed over two decades, this resort for 30,000 skiers called for easily transportable components to be prefabricated, and drew on all of her creative and collaborative skills. Take a virtual tour of the resort and see how the buildings fit seamlessly with the contours of the mountainside, and how Perriand makes thousands of mini apartments feel warm and generous.

Memphis Mania

Wallpaper brand Hovia unveils a brand new collection, inspired by the 80s magic of the Memphis Group Words E V E H E R B E R T

T Some described the style as ‘a marriage of Bauhaus and Fisher-Price’

he design collective known as the Memphis Group first exhibited at Milan’s Arc74 gallery in 1981, lighting a fire under modernist design with its exuberant mixture of colour and shapes to form an entirely new cultural design movement. The group became famous for their furniture and patterns, often described as ‘bizarre’, ‘misunderstood’ and even ‘loathed’. Some described the style as a marriage of ‘Bauhaus and Fisher-Price’. They drew inspiration from pop art, emerging technology, 1950s kitsch and futuristic ideas. Now to celebrate 40 years since the birth of Memphis, Hovia – formerly Murals Wallpaper– has launched a new collection transforming iconic 1980s Memphis designs into modern, liveable designs that are still easily recognised as Memphis-influenced, thanks to the geometric shapes and quirky patterns. The in-house design team has opted for a contemporary colour palette of pinks,

purples, reds, oranges, and blues. There are six designs in the collection: Salone, Mendini, Nathalie, Ettore, Bowie and Carlton. Tori Dennett, designer of the Memphis collection said: “The Memphis collection has been almost a year in the making. After initially drawing over 70 sketches, we narrowed it down to six designs that we felt took the modern 80s aesthetic that is so classically Memphis into 2021. With bold colours and geometric shapes, these designs are the perfect talking point for any home or commercial space.” hovia.com

Grain House HACKNEY

Grain House is a remodelled and extended Victorian, semi- detached property in the de Beauvoir Conservation Area.Designed for a young family, the house connects original and new living spaces and creates a visual link from the entrance, through the family spaces to the garden and on to the new artist’s studio at the back of the site. Prior to the works, the house was arranged as a series of small, cellular spaces with only a narrow ‘servant’s stair’ connecting the living spaces on the lower and upper ground floors. The new design dramatically reconnects these living spaces with the creation of a 2-storey courtyard at the heart of the house.

By removing internal walls, an open plan, dual aspect kitchen and dining space was created, with a further two bathrooms and utility space, built at the back. This seemingly simple side extension encountered added complexity due the irregular shape of the existing plot situated on a gentle curve in the terrace. This led to some interesting structural geometries to optimise the internal space. The clients, both designers, wanted something simple and minimal yet vibrant and graphic. This gave rise to the simple formal moves, material palette and expressive facade.

The project aimed to add an additional area to a one-bedroom garden flat. The build resulted in a tropical oasis within a Victorianterrace street, consisting of a studio space that doubles as a guest bedroom and a hidden workshop to the rear. Bespoke green terrazzo cladding wraps around the building, grey microcement flooring, dark stained cork and dense tropical landscaping result in an urban tropical haven.

This project made use of north light through carefully shaped rooflights which shield the windows from direct sun. Externally the absence of direct sunlight is investigated through “shadow catchers” which are cast from pigmented concrete and lend the house its name.

The project is an exercise in reduction, finding both the least amount of material and the fewest types of elements that can be used. The volume is a matter-of-fact response to planning constraints. Space is often at a premium in the bathroom, so consider incorporating smart storage solutions. In the Geberit Acanto range from the Geberit Aspire Collection, each compartment and drawer is created especially to house everything from toiletries and towels to electricals and cleaning products. Unique innovations such as a wall-mounted magnetic board maximise unused wall space, using niche storage trays and brackets attached precisely where you need them so that everything is within easy reach.

WA LL-H U NG

Another key design-led solution is to consider wall-hung WCs and ceramics. These not only look stylish, but utilise the latest in quick-to-fit, behind-the-wall technology to create the illusion of a larger room and hide unsightly pipework. Wall-hung furniture makes cleaning and maintenance

“Artwork and furnishings can help soften a bathroom's hard surfaces”

easier. Hygiene is more important than ever before, so consider coupling wall-hung WCs with touchless flush plates, activated by the simple wave of a hand.

DE C OR ATE

Experimenting with a mix of contemporary and vintage styles and incorporating artwork and furnishings can help soften a bathroom's hard surfaces. Biophillic design is an increasingly popular trend, encompassing everything from surfaces, air quality, ventilation, acoustics and lighting. Bathroom suites and ceramics in natural materials such as Geberit’s Citterio in Oak or Selnova Square S in light hickory are on trend. Finishing touches like flush plates are available in natural finishes, like the Sigma50 in Black Walnut or Slate.

he Campbell Collection use ancient Indian cra f t to create beautiful furnishings, while reinvesting profit to improve the lives of their makers. Founded by Bathbased husband-and-wife duo, Emma and Tim Campbell, all of The Campbell Collection’s products are handmade in India, by artisans who have been weaving or printing for generations and are proud masters of their craft. Whether its a women-led paper making studio in Jaipur, or a presidential-awarded silk weaver in Varanasi, everyone who works on these products is highly skilled and takes pride in their work.

Ethics are at the heart of the sourcing process: all makers are paid a fair wage for their work, and many of the brand’s community partners are small cooperatives or individual self-employed weavers. Emma and Tim are so passionate about improving the lives of their makers that they’ve pledged to donate 10% of their yearly profits back into the areas where their products are made. This will go towards funding health, education and empowerment projects in their artisans’ local communities. Materials matter, too. The worldwide textile industry is hugely harmful - from intensive irrigation of conventional cotton crops, to the large-scale use of nasty chemicals, to the poisoning of communities who live alongside factories.

Emma and Tim believe that companies have a responsibility to source materials and use processes that are kind to both planet and people, which is why their first collection uses organic cotton, organic linen, pure silk and recycled cotton paper. The Campbell Collection’s rugs are made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard - a certification that is recognised worldwide. Organic cotton is grown traditionally without the use of dangerous pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Conventional cotton farming can lead to local waterways becoming polluted, which can cause the surrounding communities to suffer from skin rashes, cancer and birth defects. Instead, this organic cotton is grown using crop rotation

alongside food, which enables the soil to be nurtured - making it viable long-term for the farmers as well as providing food security and additional income. The Siga Siga rug is hand-tufted in Bhadohi, known as ‘the carpet city’ - a small hamlet outside of Varanasi. It is home to one of the largest handwoven carpet industries in South Asia. All of The Campbell Collection’s organic cotton yarn is also dyed here, using only natural dyes. The Riaz rugs (striped) and Luna rug (with striped shapes) are flatwoven by a small weaving co-operative in Chunar. The weavers are paid a fair wage and are free to work flexibly around their other responsibilities, such as farming or caring for family. The cottage industry, as it is known, is important in India as it sustains livelihoods outside of major cities, which are now hugely overpopulated. The silk cushions are made using pure Indian silk, handwoven by a silk weaver in Varanasi who has previously won a presidential award for his exquisite

weaving. He is one of the only remaining weavers in Varanasi working with the traditional technique of Kadhwa. He is passionate about teaching and equipping the next generation, so that these precious skills do not die out. The linen cushions are made in the famously pink-hued city of Jaipur - in the same studio as the art prints below. Emma and Tim have sourced the organic linen from Jharkhand in North Central India. They felt it was important to use local Indian materials, which is why they didn’t choose the more commonly used European linen. The paper used for the prints is made from surplus waste cotton from the textile industry, giving each one serious eco credentials. They are handmade by a women-led paper making and block printing studio in Jaipur. Their specialty is converting the last bits of textile scraps from local fabric manufacturers into beautiful handmade paper. thecampbellcollection.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

Words P E A R L B OY D

arpe Diem Beds is a household name in Sweden, associated with the ultimate in sleep comfort. This is a bra nd that has patented a mattress designed by a chiropractor together with a team of medical experts with the aim of offering a lifetime of quality sleep. Relatively new to the UK, Carpe Diem Beds opened a showroom on Wigmore Street last year, where visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand. The store is dedicated to optimising the bedroom environment to create an oasis of calm. And while choosing the perfect mattress for you is at the heart of the experience, there’s a strong focus on

90

bedroom design and streamlining, so that the bed you choose can be housed in an environment that’s conducive to optimum sleep health. For manager Rui Franca, guiding clients through the process involves paying close attention to their needs. The showroom is a very calming place and people are encouraged to take their time. “We like people to come and spend an hour or two trying the beds. We can provide sleep masks, lower the lights and let people rest,” he says. For the UK market, Carpe Diem Beds has introduced 36 different Designers Guild fabrics for beds and headboards that can be colour matched with carpets, cushions and curtains. Franca explains: “In selecting the fabrics we look at colours that are neutral and subtle. Bright colours are energising

cushions. We have slick metal side table and lamps too, with finishes in chrome and marble, all in calming soothing tones.” The look is luxurious but minimalist and the neutral tones are designed to be mixed and matched alongside lifestyle products such as kimonos, slippers, sleep masks and scented candles. The latest addition to the range is a matching dog bed, made to the same exacting standards as the regular beds, which achieved immediate cult status on its launch in Sweden. There’s a widespread misconception that a firm mattress is better for you, says Rui. “But we believe that you should sleep in the bed, not on the bed, and our contour pocket system is meant to contour your body so that you feel you’re sleeping on a cloud.” Carpe Diem Beds was founded 25 years ago by chiropractor Börje Thuleskär in partnership with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden. The company’s patented Contour Pocket System has a unique cushioning ability, which gently yields and supports at the same time, instantly moulding to your body’s contours and changing with your every movement. Now the brand is associated with high quality Scandinavian design and innovation. A Carpe Diem bed is a long-term investment in sleep, with a superking model priced between £4,500 and £30,000. If that sounds expensive, Franca says: “We spend a third of our lives asleep and it’s funny that we’re inclined to spend more on our cars than on our beds.” Funny indeed.

2 C L I M AT E C O N T R O L The room shouldn’t be very warm or very cold. 18-20 degrees maximum is a good temperature. Bedrooms should be well insulated and the heating should be off.

What is your background - how did you come to be a designer? I always had a passion for clothes, influenced largely by my grandmother who was a model in the 50’s and was always very glam. I grew up in Somerset and she was in London, so we visited her often. It was always so exciting to see city life, I used to get such a buzz driving in on the Westway. Both she and my mother have a very classic look in how they dress and how they would put a room together. My father is an architect, retired now. I grew up discussing buildings and his projects with him, and I was always interested, though he never encouraged my brother and me into it. For me it’s to slow a process anyway. I always knew I wanted to study fashion. Though going to fashion college put me

off the industry. So instead of finding a job in it after I graduated, I started my own business. One of many that finally led me to Humphries and Begg. Humphries and Begg has a distinctive colourful look. Was that there from the start? I’ve always had a flamboyant style personally, so yes always colourful, but my style of print has developed as the brand evolved. I design the collections from a colour palette that has inspired me.

H O M E | Q&A

ALICE BEGG AND ROBBIE HUMPHRIES

Tell us about moving from fashion into homewares. How did it happen? During my 20s, I had various different part time jobs. Often in retail and one of them was for the Cloth Shop on Portobello Road. This is where I learnt a lot about interior fabrics. We had a lot of interior designers in and I guess I picked up a lot from them and from the manager at the time, Alex Adams. She was brilliant with colour. I used to always do the windows and had a lovely time there. We had the flat above which was amazing! you can still find pictures of that if you google Humphries and Begg – somehow they ended up on the Dulux website . Anyway I always knew I wanted to do something with fabrics and start making my own one day. We moved from London to Stroud in Gloucestershire before my daughter was born in 2019 and bought our first house. I think this, combined with lockdown, fast forwarded the idea a bit quicker than it would have happened, had life remained normal. What designers do you admire? There are a few designers I feel I learn a lot from: Blockshop Textiles, Ace and Jig and Bode, also Lrnce and Marimekko. All for different reasons. I went to a talk at Hauser and Wirth in Somerset a few years ago on Alexander Calder – I love how he would use so many different mediums and didn’t feel the need to stick to one. He would design or create pieces for around the house, everyday objects and had the most exciting life. Is your house a riot of colour and pattern? It’s pretty colourful – and slowly our fabrics are being infiltrated throughout. It’s currently a bit of a building site but will

We had beautiful hand-spun cotton made in some of our favourites prints, the perfect weight for tableware be glorious I hope when it’s finished. In a few months, we hope. I love objects and seem to be a bit like a goldfish, growing to fit the room I’m in. Your new table linen is full of summery joy. Tell us about that. We had this beautiful hand-spun cotton made in some of our favourites prints. They are the perfect weight for tableware so we used a few local makers here in Stroud to make them up. As it’s all about being at home and making the most of our gardens at the moment, it felt like the perfect time. What’s next for Humphries and Begg? The pandemic and Brexit have really

made it harder for us to work with artisans overseas. We will always make our printed summer collection in India with our brilliant print team there, but we want to bring a bit of production back to the UK. So we have been meeting new suppliers here and that feels exciting, we can do shorter runs and be a bit more spontaneous with what we make. I’ve been designing some bed quilts for winter, which is exciting – and we have some amazing wool rugs arriving very soon. Tufted and woven in super bright colours. These will be available to preorder around June. humphriesandbegg.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

 RAINBOW COLOURS If you have a collection of books with brightly coloured spines, then one way to create visual impact is to order them by shade rather than by type or subject – this can be particularly striking if the room decor is neutral, whether it uses darker or lighter tones, as the colours will really pop. If you like the idea of books as decorative objects, but your collection doesn’t really lend itself to this treatment, then you could consider covering them with patterned or plain paper (though admittedly, if you have hundreds this might be a bit of a tall order).

A book collection can bring an additional dimension to an interior’s appeal

S

pace is often the biggest issue for many of us. It’s not uncommon to feel, after living somewhere for a few years, that you’ve outgrown your place – whether that’s because your family has some new members (or you’ve made another change: perhaps you’ve started your own business or taken up a new hobby), or simply because you’ve accumulated more belongings. But whether the hassle of moving just doesn’t appeal, you adore the location or the actual bricks and mortar of where you live now or you simply can’t afford to stretch your finances to pay for a larger house or flat, it’s worth considering how to make your space work harder for you so that you can stay put and be happier about it. Book lovers may now have the space-saving option of e-readers, but many of us still relish the reassuring weight of an actual hardback or paperback in our hands –

and a book collection (of whatever size) can not only be a very cherished possession but also bring an additional dimension to an interior’s aesthetic appeal. Fitted bookshelves are the obvious choice for book storage, but if space is tight, think creatively about where you put them. A wall-hung shelf above a doorway, for example, can be an excellent way to use ‘dead’ space that isn’t ordinarily filled with anything. Wall niches or the alcoves either side of a chimney breast are traditional locations for built-in shelves, but if you don’t

 SHOW SUPPORT If you have a lot of books, then storage must be thought about carefully – not only will you need space but sturdy shelves are a must, as a large collection of books can weigh rather a lot.

have these, other storage options are worth considering. If you have a large library, a modular shelving system is an excellent and stylish solution, and it can be dismantled and taken with you if you relocate. There are also lots of freestanding shelving options. Although these tend to be less flexible, they can be an attractive addition to a room and some can even act as room dividers (but make sure you fix them to the floor if you have pets or children). As well as being vehicles for thoughts and knowledge, books can be decorative objects in their own right. Current reads can go on a coffee table. In addition, stack volumes under tables or benches, arrange them in empty fireplaces or awkwardly shaped alcoves or alongside ornaments on trolleys or in display cabinets.

LIVING A Kensington apartment, as designed by Alpex Architecture Words CA S PA R DAV I D

T

he apartment has been designed for a very successful business woman working in the entertainment field. She travels a lot, and even if she is based in Ireland, she has a very modern house in LA. Her family home is a listed stone house on the coast, beautifully renovated and furnished for contemporary living. Because of her travelling all year around she has developed a great knowledge of contemporary living and a special eye for hotel suites, in which she particularly likes the great space distribution, the en-suite and dressing areas intended as a place to prepare for the workday and to relax after a long intense working day. As she attends lots of social events, she has quite a unique and precious clothes collection, which suggested the need for a walk-in wardrobe with glass door and dedicated areas to accessories and particularly to shoes and bags, the most iconic pieces of most women. The apartment in the listed Hale House has been totally stripped out to be renovated and refitted with traditional features converting, with the guidance of the architect, in a more contemporary style. The property has a wide main reception room opening towards the pedestrian Canning passage, a large family room, kitchen, four bedrooms, four shower rooms, of which three are en-suite, plus a bespoke walk-in wardrobe in the master bedroom. It has been designed to meet the client's expectation of high-quality finishes and contemporary design in respect of the original features, high ceilings, and traditional sash windows. The kitchen has a warm and elegant feeling with natural oak units and a Lucifer marble island with striking veins through the worktop area. The light grey quartz splashback serves as a background for the wall units and can be seen through the glass doors and shelves. The led strip lighting illuminates the glass cabinets with indirect, warm light. The design is complemented by the Penta Glo Black Glass Pendants hanging over the kitchen island.

H O M E | GARDENING

KERB APPEAL

Lechuza shares five tips for successful container gardening Words L E C H U Z A .C O. U K

Think about drainage

This is a key first step because the right amount of drainage can be a matter of life and death for your plants. Waterlogged soil causes a plant’s roots to rot and is likely to kill it. Consider drainage when purchasing the pots you plan to use. The minimum size for a drainage hole is half an inch in diameter for small or medium-sized pots, while larger pots will need holes at least an inch in diameter.

If you’re not keen on watering, then grow succulents

Choose the right soil

Fill your containers with a high-quality potting soil. Don’t use soil directly from your garden because, unlike potting mix, which includes ingredients like perlite and vermiculite to improve aeration and keep soil loose and well-draining, earth from your garden is likely to harden and compact when dry.

Look at your light

Different plant varieties have varying needs and likes when it comes to light so, when selecting your plants, take note of the care tags and make sure you know whether they grow best in sun or shade. You want to avoid mixing sun- and shade-loving plants in the same pot if you are creating an arrange-

100

ment. There are also plenty of houseplants that can tolerate low light if you are worried your home may be too dark for anything to thrive. It is worth saving these care tags to remind yourself of feeding and watering requirements.

Feed your plants

Although the perfect consistency for container planting, many potting mixes don’t always contain enough nutrients for your plant, so be sure to fertilise regularly. You can mix a slow- release fertiliser into your soil when you pot up and then regularly treat plants to a liquid plant food added into your watering can when you water. To make your job even easier, some brands offer pre-mixed feed, designed specifically for container gardening, that you can just pour into pots straight from the bottle.

Choose plants that suit your lifestyle

To have the most fun and chance of success, assess how you live before you take the plunge. There will be a type of container garden that suits your lifestyle. For example, if you’re not keen on watering, then grow succulents and other drought-resistant plants. If you want something that will last and return to bloom again next year, choose to plant perennials and be sure to deadhead or chop back when necessary to encourage further growth and keep them blooming. Alternatively, if you like to chop and change with the seasons, plant annual flowers and swap out for new ones, as and when you need to. Just do a little research and find out what works for you.

n the 14th arrondissement of Paris, right on the border to Montparnasse, lies the home of Isis-Colombe Combréas. The founder of MilK Magazine shares the 180-square metre apartment with her photographer husband Karel Balas, with whom she founded MilK in 2003, their 16-year-old daughter Hiroko and the family pet, a handsome Persian cat by the name of Jack. “We’ve lived here for 17 years,” Isis tells us, “It’s our family home, even though our oldest, Aliocha, has recently moved out to study engineering. The building is really beautiful and dates back to the 1930s. Living on the Left Bank and working in the 1st arrondissement, I often travel to and from work by foot or electric bike – it’s always a wonder for me to cross the Seine and go through the antique district.” Spread over three floors, Isis’ home is truly a melting pot of classic and modern design: high ceilings, wide panels and pristine cornices reference the archetypal image of pre-war Parisian architecture, while a pewter-blue resin covers all of the flooring and a network of newly-added metal beams spread throughout the rooms, linking them all together.

I like to mix modern design with brutalist and vintage pieces Though at first glance one might take Isis for a Paris native, she was actually born and raised on the Spanish island of Ibiza, and first moved to Paris as a young adult to study literature and film. “I was brought up in a very strong counterculture by my artist parents – it was the 1970’s and we lived in a small hippie community,” Isis tells us. Being raised by artists, one could say that creativity is a part of Isis’ DNA, but they weren’t the only ones who sparked her initial interest in design: “My uncle, who is only ten years older than me, worked at YSL in the early 90’s. He imparted a lot of his design taste to me, and I still love the aesthetics from that period.” After finishing her studies, Isis worked as a publishing assistant and later, as a television presenter on various children’s shows. For 13 years, she worked both on and off

106

camera, producing segments as well as hosting them. When Isis eventually began the journey with MilK in 2003, it was a fusion of her many talents and experiences: her education in literature, her experience in children’s entertainment, her time in publishing and not least her experiences as a mother. Her objective? To offer a modern journey into the world of childhood, or as she so succinctly puts it, “to depict the art of family living.” Today, an edition of MilK Magazine is filled with the latest in sustainable microfashion, children’s interiors and family-friendly travel destinations, as well as articles that profile contemplative, weighty issues affecting modern day families, such as raising a child with disabilities, mindfulness for all ages and the influence of technology on a child’s cognitive development. in both French and English, MilK Magazine has expanded to include a design publication – MilK Décoration – as well as Japanese, Korean and Chinese editions. Isis currently holds the title of Managing Editor and Editorial Director at MilK, as well as that of Director at FOVEA – a creative and consulting agency she started 6 years ago. In the wake of all these accomplishments, Isis remains humble. “I hope to have created unique and inspiring magazines,” she says modestly. “At MilK, we care about beauty and sustainability, and in a traditional country like France, it isn’t always easy to highlight a new lifestyle.” Isis’ confidence to try something new is certainly mirrored in her home. Metal beams introduce an unexpected and modern element into the space collective that came out of Milan in the 80’s. Shunning the minimalism of mid-century modernism, the artists instead embraced vivid colours and geometric forms in an intersection of Art Deco, Pop Art and Kitsch. You can feel this rebellious vein running through Isis’ home – no more so than in the black metal beams and perforated metal walls that run throughout the home and stand in great contrast to the original 1930’s coving and stucco. “The metal beams play a functional role by allowing us to redistribute the spaces and restructure the original

floorplan from the 30’s,” Isis explains. “It also introduces an unexpected and modern element into the space. I like to mix modern design with brutalist and vintage pieces.” Designed and installed six years ago by the Italian architecture firm UdA – now MARCANTE–TESTA – the beams are based on a unique rack system of metal tubes and perforated sheet metal, and allow for the creation of open, communal spaces ideal for family living, as well as creating new and functional spaces that the previous floorplan lacked. One such space is the ensuite master bathroom, separated from the bedroom only by coloured glass and perforated metal screens. Here the linear lines of the metal beams are contrasted by a cream- coloured spiral, also formed out of metal, which Isis playfully uses as a towel rack. Therein lies the magic of this unique Parisian apartment – although it is filled with bold, beautiful design elements, it is all done with a sense of ease and joy. When asked what makes a home, Isis’ answer is simple: “family memories, pieces from our travels and the nonchalant presence of our cat.” fermliving.com

“Henry fell in love with the meditative process of building each piece by hand ”

T

he former Creative Director of his eponymous fashion la b el House of Holland, Henry first discovered a love of ceramics during the pandemic, enrolling in lessons at his local Hackney pottery studio. Initially intended only as a parttime creative outlet, Henry quickly fell in love with the meditative process of building each piece by hand, which provided a new, and welcome pace of working, following years spent in the frenetic world of fashion. When lockdown restrictions closed the local studio, Henry stumbled across his own interpretation of the nerikomi pottery technique while practicing at his kitchen

table. The slow method of stacking, folding and rolling coloured clay into slabs, then hand moulding them into functional shapes, means that each piece is organic in nature, and impossible to recreate exactly. Now able to work from his studio again, Henry’s first collection of ceramics includes table and serveware in a range of different colours. Each object is unique with the combined colour combinations of the different earthenware clays, creating Henry’s signature colour combinations and patterns. This debut collection marks the start of a series of homeware collections for Henry Holland Studio who, as well as in-house ceramics, will also be launching new collaborative projects for different areas of the home. “It is a privilege to design beautiful things that people are willing to live with, says Henry. “To contribute to someone’s personal environment in this way, to be treasured, and to build treasured things, that’s the kind of connection we are all looking for”. henryhollandstudio.com A B S O L U T E LY. There’s a lot that goes into your bathroom before you do. At Ripples, we work slightly differently from others. Our talented bathroom designers try to get to know you first. They chat with you about what you like and what you don’t like. They go over your ideas, your torn out pages from magazines, your Pinterest boards – whatever it is that inspires you. Before we do anything, we find out exactly what you’re looking for, and then we make sure as much of you goes into our ideas as possible. We don’t do one size

fits all solutions, but we do take dreams and ideas and turn them into bespoke designs for your new bathroom. From the moment you step into our showroom to the moment you step into your new bath, we make the whole process as smooth and stress-free as it can be. It’s the Ripples effect. Let’s have a chat about what we can do for you.

“The neutral trend for 2021 continues subtly away from cold greys and traditional country creams”

BASSOON

Ruth Mottershead, Marketing Director comments, “Alongside the cherished Little Greene signature colour palette, it is wonderful to be able to introduce new colours that celebrate the desire for warmth and joy such as Indian Yellow, named after the traditional oil pigment used by fine artists, Bassoon with its deep-ochre undertone, and Giallo, an uncompromising, yet very easyto-use, burst of golden sunshine. These bold and charming yellows illustrate our desire to return to warmth without regressing to cream. The punchy new yellows are accompanied by a host of new colours that include gentle powdery pink Masquerade,

rich and charismatic charcoal grey Vulcan, the beautiful and inviting new mid-strength blue Etruria and Silent White- the answer to the everlasting quest for the perfectly balanced, calming and elegant neutralwarm white.” She continues: “The neutral trend for 2021 continues subtly away from cold greys and traditional country creams, towards neutral stone tones, complex greys and nature’s favourite; green. By providing these soft tonal colours in families we can offer a subtle spectral range that consumers can combine with confidence. The lightest four shades work beautifully to add discreet depth to a room, softly defining characterful architectural features, or reducing the contrast of walls and ceilings which might be subjected to different light levels. The deeper shades can be used to complete a coordinated, harmonious scheme that, while monochromatic in hue, makes a strong statement with an expansive depth of colour.” littlegreene.com A B S O L U T E LY. Gillian Millner has hosted 500 film shoots in her south London house and set up an agency helping people do the same. Absolutely meets her Interview P E N D L E H A R T E

DOLCE & GABBANA

How did you get into using your house as a location? I used to work for Natmags and all our advertorial shoots were in people’s houses. I noticed that some houses were glorious and others were just normal. So when my husband and I were in the process of moving house I wanted to find one spacious and different enough to rent out for shoots because I knew that houses that are super special or have beautiful gardens or a unique sense of style were in demand. This was 20 years ago – at first we were thinking of an old factory in Dalston but in the end we found Deerhurst Road – it was a square 1970s house with incredible huge pivot windows and an indoor swimming pool. It was in a right state. We ended up having to take the whole back of the house off, but the space was already there and I could see that we could make it work. What did you adapt specially? We obsessively went for a 1970s interior to go with the architecture. I bought 1970s wallpaper and anywhere I could put wallpaper, I did. We collected vases, pots

and everything. My house is a bit weird now with all its pot plants and retro storage jars. I do live in a normal bed though – the whole house isn’t 70s. We’ve got a roof deck and I was very clear with the gardener that I need plants that are low maintenance and will never die, because they need to provide a good background year round. The garden has plastic grass for the same reason. We have a disco room with wooden panelling, a red floor and a Christian Dior banquette sofa. Jenna Coleman came here for a shoot after The Serpent and we had the Krays in it a couple of weeks ago. And the bathrooms are 1970s. One has a huge buttercup yellow circular plastic bath, which was there when we bought the house. There’s a yellow loo, shower and double sink too. The other bathroom is avocado.

How does hosting film crews work with family life? My children think it’s great. My son was six months old when we moved in; he’s 17 now and he’s grown up in a shoot location. They’re used to having to go and get

breakfast in the cafe on the common and eating takeaway food because a film crew has taken over the kitchen. One of my favourite memories is Olly Murs singing “Lola” to my daughter Lola. He shot his music video Busy in the house. How much work is it to maintain your house in readiness for a shoot? It’s a nice way of getting another income but it’s not without work. The house has cost us a fortune but it helps earns its keep. For instance I know that I’m going to have to tidy today and I’m always nagging my family. I do a lot of cleaning and get through a lot of hand cream and Marigolds. What about damage? I’m not precious about the flooring. We have a laminate wooden floor and people can drag things across it. In fact I’m unprecious about the whole house. If shoots cause damage they’re very quick to say and they just make good. The main stress is making sure you keep on track with neighbours when you have lots of cars and trucks parking on your street. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

The house has cost us a fortune but it helps earns its keep

And inconvenience? We’ve never moved out even for a night. The house is big enough that we can be upstairs if they’re shooting downstairs. You don’t have to go out but you shouldn’t hover. I generally sit in my office – which could be any room they’re not in. What have been your shoot highlights? We’ve had everyone here – Jenna Coleman, Claudia Schiffer, Olly Murs, Christopher Kane, Jamie Dorman, Rita Ora, Rupert Everett, David Walliams, Daisy Lowe, Simon Pegg and Heston Blumenthal among others. You’ve launched an agency to help other people market their houses as locations. Why did you start that? It’s more a consultancy – I go in and hold their hand, take photographs and video

footage, set up a website and instagram feed and introduce them to the location libraries. I either set them up and they run it or I manage it. It’s a great way to monetise your house. What advice would you give to anyone considering it? Come to me! It’s important to set up good house rules - set them up carefully and respect your neighbours. It’s important to consider whether you’ve got enough space to accommodate 10-15 people, otherwise there’s nowhere for the crew to go. And if you have a beautiful house you can’t be too precious about it. www.deerhurstroad.co.uk @deerhurstroadshootlocation locationcreation.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

wning covers protect you from the sun and they colourfully decorate your home. Now there are even fabrics with an artistic touch. The 16 “smart art” fabrics from awning manufacturer markilux showcase flower blossoms, leaves, dots, geometrical shapes and motifs reminiscent of modern acrylic painting. The patterns are printed digitally onto the textile material using weatherproof and water-repellent latex dyes.

Environmentally friendly

The attractive patterns are even visible from underneath the cover. To achieve this,

the fabric is pre-treated in a special way. This allows the thin, slightly elastic layer of latex to adhere permanently to the top of the fabric. It is particularly smooth, so the material stays clean longer in comparison with other printed outdoor fabrics. In addition, the awning covers are completely immune to the effects of wind and weather. Moreover, the digital textile print, with its water-based, odourless colours, is extremely environmentally friendly.

These awning covers are reminiscent of acrylic paintings

Inspired by art

The expressive, graphic motifs employed in the ‘smart art’ collection were inspired by artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Silhouettes, overly dimensioned mobiles, die stamping and other techniques are sources of inspiration. The exclusive patterns are

found in both coloured versions and plain grey tones. This style of awning cover is quite new and therefore makes it possible for a completely individual style to be created, as art in all its broad diversity can now be applied to an awning cover.

s the nation transitions out of lockdown and back to some sort of normality, Lucy Pittaway, crowned the UK’s Most Popular Published Artist by the Fine Art Trade Guild, shines a Rainbow of Hope with smile-evoking artwork to brighten up your home. Lucy’s latest releases are inspired by the sanctuary we found in our homes, the simple things we learned to appreciate and the passions we rediscovered throughout one of the most challenging years we have ever encountered. “The last 12 months have been a rollercoaster ride for us all. We’ve been tested and pushed to our limits. Despite the devastating world around us we have somehow managed to rediscover our hobbies and interests, taken up new ones, learned who we are and what we can be, and most of all,

“Rainbow of Hope radiates with optimism that there is light at the end of the tunnel ” learned to appreciate the simple things in life. My latest work explores all that we have enjoyed in these strange times – from seeking solace in our homes to exercising outdoors and the companionship of close family members,” says Lucy. Inspired by the rainbow-filled windows that lined our streets during the first lockdown, Lucy’s recent release ‘Rainbow of Hope’ features a row of colourful houses, radiating with optimism that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The red hearts symbolise sending love from our homes to those that we have missed. While ‘Love is All Around’ is an ode to the imperative work that key workers have done throughout the pandemic. This limited-edition piece is inspired by love, thanks and an appreciation for our national health service, with blue hearts floating from homes of all shapes and sizes across our land. 25% of each sale of this print is donated to NHS charities Together and so far, has raised in excess of £4,000.

“We’ll never forget the hard work of all NHS workers during these unprecedented times. We’ll always remember the scenes of people clapping on Thursday nights. We’ll forever be grateful to all those people who have risked their lives for others while we stayed home.” Amidst the hectic, fast pace of daily life, we were suddenly forced to stop and take some time out. Encouraging us to find joy in life’s simple pleasures, spend quality time with family, exercise outdoors and rediscover traditional recreational hobbies to fill our time. ‘That’s My Boy’ depicts a father, teaching his young boy to ride a bike. The street, usually bustling with life, is deserted symbolising a bizarre time of social isolation. All of Lucy’s work can be found on her website. t the top of Herne Hill, a three-minute walk away from its main site, Herne Hill School has just opened a new, state-of-the-art Kindergarten entirely dedicated to optimising the development of its youngest children (two and three years old). The stately Victorian mansion has been completely refurbished to the highest standard to create a warm, welcoming 'home from home' environment. It is conducive to stimulating the children’s creativity and maximising their learning through an expertly devised play-based curriculum. The site also boasts a large garden with an amazing 'sand land' and

nature-centric activity areas such as water play, mud kitchen and herb growing. From the autumn, an additional tumble space building, the 'Bach', will also be available at the back of the property. It will open onto the garden through large Crittal-style doors to provide easy access to the outdoors, thereby giving the children the freedom to explore, learn and enjoy the natural environment. Children can attend term-time once they have turned two, for fullday provision two to five days per week. They are grouped into four small classes (Heather, Lavender, Rosemary and Sage), for each of which a patch with multiple varieties of their namesake is planted in the garden. This helps the children appreciate the whole cycle from growing, harvesting, preparing and eating seasonal produce to

repurposing food waste back into the ground through composting. In the latter part of the academic year, the children are gradually introduced to the school's main site and its woodland area to enable a smooth progression through the five-year continuous curriculum. There, they transition from playbased learning to more formal learning and then move on to their next schools at a natural entry point, equipped with all the required foundational skills to shine for life.

ABOUT HERNE HILL SCHOOL

Herne Hill School was founded in 1976 as a nursery school in the deceptively large grounds of the Old Vicarage behind St. Paul's Church. In response to parental demand, it expanded ten years later to also become a pre-preparatory school. Today, it is the largest standalone independent school in the country focusing exclusively on 2+ to 7-year old children, i.e. the period of Early Childhood Education and Development (ECED) research has unequivocally established as the most formative in a child's life. Loving, caring and expert staff guide the children in a highly individualised manner on their ‘whole child’ development journey through play, exploration, creativity and learning through music, singing, dance, art, drama, movement, woodwork as well as the use of the outdoors. The school’s ethos of “Love · Care · Excellence” provides a pervasive cultural umbrella for all activities and relationships. Herne Hill School has been continuously recommended in the Good Schools Guide since 2013. HERNE HILL SCHOOL 127 Herne Hill, SE24 hernehillschool.co.uk

t Milbourne Lodge we approach the teaching of Art & IT in a rather unique way. Each year we choose a different theme. We have this year chosen the life of Frances Hodgson Burnett and ‘The Secret Garden’. We hope that pupils will relate to the author’s resilience, confidence and self-belief. Our themes are chosen, planned and researched by us during the Summer holidays and jointly introduced to pupils the following term. Previous titles have included ‘It’s a Wild World’, ‘Take One Shoe’, ‘Sport’, ‘Idioms’, ‘Make IT Happy’, ‘Money Can’t Buy’ and ‘Swallows & Amazons’. Our Art & IT departments are found side by side on the top floor of our century-old prep school in Surrey. We teach all 200 pupils from Year 3 to Year 8, but in small classes which rotate weekly, and allow us to give individual attention to all. Although carefully planned, invariably our themes develop organically. A key to our success is that as teachers we are both incredibly different, yet tremendously similar. Wellbeing is fundamental to our teaching and we often see a different side to pupils in

138

WE WANT TO ENCOURAGE PUPILS TO GATHER DIGITAL SKILLS AND USE THEM TO CREATE

our small, relaxed environment. They talk freely when engrossed in a piece of work. Our theme always excites and engages the whole school, but we know it is just the ‘pretty packaging’ around the fundamental skills we need to teach in Art & IT. We too love learning, and pride ourselves that we never teach the same project twice. Pupils build on their self-esteem, identity and confidence in our lessons. We often draw on the talents of visiting speakers, as well as hosting workshops and participating in external competitions. Our teaching is never static. Pupils, we know, thrive outdoors and where possible we will film, photograph, animate and build installations using the wonderful outdoor spaces at school. Our aim is to stimulate pupils to explore and question the world around them. Looking at artists and innovators who have gone before brings context to this learning. Children today find themselves living a life that is always ‘connected’. It is

imperative that we teach them to know how and when to step back and ‘disconnect’. At Milbourne Lodge we want to encourage pupils to gather digital skills and use them to create, not just consume, content. Pupils are proud of their work displayed in our Summer Exhibition. This opens on Speech Day and remains in the Dining Hall for the following year. It is wonderful to listen as children explain to their parents how they have created their pieces, confirming their progress and development. Our virtual gallery, created during online teaching last year, is a wonderful example of how pupils expressed their feelings and emotions based on our theme of ‘Identity’ (https://artsteps.com and search for ‘ml’). We hope that our pupils leave Milbourne Lodge with a love of learning, exploration and creativity and an understanding of how our two subjects work so well together – the traditions of Art combined with the innovations of technology.

Championing The ARTS Catherine Beddison, Deputy Head (Operational) at Cranleigh Prep School, on making space to protect the arts

O

ver the last year, schools have all had to find ways to respond resourcefully to the current changing lockdown guidelines, rules and restrictions as best they can, catering for their pupils in ever more creative ways. The Arts have so much to be proud of during the lockdown periods of 2020. Many people have found comfort through art, craft or design; temporarily escaped from their worries through film, TV or music; expressed themselves through movement, painting or in other ways. Huge numbers of people have explored technology to help them connect with each other, becoming impromptu video editors and sound engineers to facilitate communication and share their projects with the wider world. It has been a time like no other and our hearts go out to those professionals whose very livelihoods have been so threatened by the pandemic. So what happens next? Schools are certainly looking forward to the time when everything returns to normal. Teachers have been tasked with the job of helping pupils to catch up in key areas where they have missed curriculum time and all educators are looking forward to a time where the future is more predictable, and planning can be seen through to completion. It is imperative, therefore, that schools make sure that they protect space

for the Arts to flourish and grow at a time when there is sure to be pressure to concentrate on the core curriculum, the academic building blocks and the measurable data. Pupils at Cranleigh Prep School were fortunate to return to school last September with access to a broad and balanced curriculum, including a full programme of creative and artistic subjects and activities. Whilst this was a challenge organisationally, the primary

focus was, and continues to be, about making the day-to-day experience as positive as possible for our pupils. Music ensembles were reformed into much smaller year group bubbles, special events were postponed or redesigned, lesson plans were rewritten, plays and concerts turned to films instead of being live performances. The list goes on. Was it worth all the effort? Absolutely. Now schools have the opportunity to build on these experiences as they move forward in 2021. Finding ways that draw their communities back together and allow children to express their emotions are going to be so important. We do not yet know what long lasting effects the pandemic will have on our society, but we know that collaborating with each other and developing a shared bond through experiencing artistic activities together will allow children to reconnect with each other in a way that is very different from, yet complementary to, traditional academic learning. I urge schools to be uncompromising in championing the Arts and making sure there is space to nurture the next generation of musicians, artists, performers and creative people. We couldn’t live without the Arts during lockdown, so we certainly should ensure we protect them now.

aura Dockrill is beaming at me from her pink living room, wearing bright lipstick and laughing. She doesn’t look like the type of person to suffer from post-partum psychosis. But as anyone who has listened to even a single episode of her new podcast Zombimum will know, there isn’t such a type of person. Dockrill was hospitalised with crippling psychosis soon after her son was born, and after recovering slowly, she made it her mission to tell her story. And because she is who she is, she makes it approachable, relatable and even funny.

Not that it was funny at the time. “Jet was three weeks old when I was hospitalised and I was seriously unwell in those three weeks. I couldn’t have a conversation because I was constantly either catatonic or manic. Brain racing, sentences not making sense. I went to hospital for two weeks during which I got better for a moment when I took to the medication really well, but then a new strand appeared – a bit like coronavirus – and it ramped up again. One of my paranoid delusions told me that I had to be out of hospital, so I left too early and then fell into a depression, which is quite normal after a psychotic episode – and that was probably worse than the psychosis. Depression has

a nasty way of making you think that you owe everybody, that you’re in debt and you have to get better quickly, plus you’re on lots of medication that makes you put on more weight so you don’t feel like yourself.” She has told this story a lot, though it took her a long time to find the courage to talk about it. “As a children’s writer at first I didn’t want to write about it in case it infected my work,” she says, though as a storyteller with a natural talent for shaping a narrative, she found herself frantically writing about it on her phone in what became a book What Have I Done?, which came out last April, in lockdown. At that point her son was two, and she says that writing it healed her. “Every time I talk about it, it exorcises some sort of ghost. You’re throwing scary dark things into the light and it brings down the fear factor, so I’m very grateful for that. It’s a well-trodden path in my brain now.” Dockrill’s energy is remarkable. She’s an author, performance poet and illustrator who has published eight children’s books in addition to her own memoir – she’s energetic and fun and instantly likeable, and that’s what makes the podcast such a success. If writing about her own experience healed her, then talking about it publicly is a step towards healing other people. Guests on her show so far have included Paloma Faith, Candice Braithwaite, Catherine Cho, Denise Welch, Joe Wicks and her own husband, musician Hugo White. There are a lot of laughs but also a lot of harrowing content. “I want to speak the truth. Why did nobody tell me that there was a chance I wouldn’t feel ok in my mind after having a baby? I’d been told so many times to look after my pelvic floor muscles, yet nobody told me that I could get severe anxiety and insomnia and suicidal thoughts. This is not about not being able to fit into your clothes – it’s about not being able to fit into your life.” Why does she think it happened to her? “I’ve had a whole new bout of insomnia wondering about this,” she says. “I was naive before, thinking I’d never get mentally ill. But that’s like thinking you’ll never get cancer or never get run over by a car. I was referred to a consultant and I asked him why, and told him my theories. He just said ‘it just wasn’t your day’. That was it, and it weirdly liberated me so much – I felt comforted that it could just happen to anyone. After that I could deal with recovery and acceptance.” Recovery will always be a part of her life now, she says, and

“This is not about

not being able to fit into your clothes – it’s about not being able to fit into your life” having a supportive partner is something she’s hugely grateful for. “He’s sick of me now,” she laughs. “His tolerance for difficult stuff is enormous; he’s so gentle and kind. He constantly listened and reassured me and validated me. I used to think that the point of talking was to share – but another benefit is that you get bored of it. It dilutes the fear. When I go to my phone to write spaghetti and the word schizophrenia comes up, the word has lost its power to scare me now.” Comedy has helped too, and finding things to laugh about within the trauma. “My friends now refer to things and say ‘you weren’t there then, you were in psychosis’ as if I was off on holiday. Comedy has sugared the pill. “This illness has a really nasty way of creeping up on people and making people feel shame and not ask for help. There’s so much pressure to be the perfect mum, soft and kind and gentle, it doesn’t look good to have a mental illness.” This is what Zombiemum is addressing, and creating a safe space in which to discuss serious subjects and find laughs too. “Sometimes it is quite intense but it’s good to know that when I’m done I can just run to the living room and watch Hey Duggee with Jet for half an hour.” Lucky Jet.

GIFTING Baby gifts shouldn't always be for baby – mama's needs count too, say Primrose & Ginger

“Jewellery, while

always welcome, is neither practical nor healing”

P

rimrose & Ginger is a small family-run business. The idea of curating luxury maternity self-care boxes was the brainchild of two sisters and their mother, Debra. Imani, a 22-year-old, found herself graduating in the middle of a pandemic, while her older sister, Rebecca, was suddenly furloughed. As work opportunities closed down, they began to think about how to use one of Imani’s recent dissertations involving boxes for problem-solving with one of Rebecca’s habits of gifting mini surprises in boxes. The idea of luxury maternity came about after attending several zoom-based baby showers and gender reveals and the trio noticed that everything is focused on baby gifts, never on celebrating or gifting the mother. Mothers can go through a

whole life-changing experience, physically, mentally and often emotionally, with no real celebration or acknowledgment of her part. It was this observation that sparked a thought that mothers could be more luxuriously yet sensibly supported during their pregnancy. While jewellery is ALWAYS welcome, it is neither practical, nurturing, healing nor supportive. These boxes bring that and smiles to faces. That underpins everything. Those initial thoughts became Primrose & Ginger, a range of beautifully packaged self-care boxes that take mothers through each key stage of their pregnancy and beyond. The name Primrose & Ginger refers to when natural remedies like primrose oil were used for fertility and ginger for nausea relief. Interestingly, there is a huge sycamore tree outside of the family home which symbolises love, protection and fertility. primroseandginger.co.uk

PA R E N T I N G 5 ways you can parent the Swedish way

T

he Scandinavian style of childrearing is practical, egalitarian and free from outdated myths. In Parenthood the Swedish Way, two leading Swedish medical specialists, Dr Cecilia Chrapkowska and Dr Agnes Wold, guide parents through a maze of information to help them raise healthy, happy families in the twenty-first century. Here are 5 tips they’ve shared to help you parent the Scandi way.

or 99–1, ‘out of habit’. We suggest you draw up a partnership contract before the baby arrives. It should contain a plan for the split of parental leave and care in the first year. A partnership contract lays the foundation for active and equal involvement by both parents.

2

D I TC H U N N E C E S S A RY PRODUCTS

Resentment occurs when one party in a relationship feels that they are not getting their fair share of something — often freedom, time, or money. The emotion of resentment can be a healthy and natural defence mechanism. Resentment should be taken seriously as a warning sign that one person in a relationship may be being exploited. Sharing parenting duties equally, down to the most minute level, will help guard against resentment and allow your child to have an equally strong relationship with both of their parents. When a baby is born, there will always be a certain amount of chaos, so you will need to plan in advance to avoid falling into the 80–20 model or the default model of your society, whether it’s 80–20, 70–30

There are masses of companies that thrive on expectant parents who want to be fully prepared and who don’t know yet how few things a newborn really needs. Don’t be taken in by special offers, and don’t buy anything unless you’re absolutely sure you’ll need it. A newborn needs a few clothes, a lot of nappies, something to be carried around or pushed in, and a car seat (if you have or use a car). If you choose to feed your baby on formula, you will need to spend money on the formula and bottles; if you choose to breastfeed, the mother will eat more, and so groceries will be a little more expensive. A changing table can be handy, but it isn’t an absolute must. A bed sounds important, but in fact homes are full of cots that babies have never slept in, so hold off on buying a cot — there are other alternatives that may be more suitable to start with. In particular, be sceptical about any type of product that is said to monitor or improve your baby’s health and safety – many monitors create more anxiety than peace of mind.

I T ’ S O K TO D R I N K A LCO H O L WHEN BREASTFEEDING

It is completely unnecessary for women to pump and discard their milk if they have drunk alcohol. Breast milk will always contain the same concentration of alcohol as the blood. If you weigh 60 kg and quickly drink two glasses of wine, you’ll have around 0.05 per cent alcohol in your blood (50 milligrams per 100 millilitres). Your breast milk will then also contain 0.05 per cent alcohol, which is 40 times less than the alcohol concentration in low-alcohol beer (2.1 per cent). Such a minimal alcohol level is not going to harm your baby. In fact, many natural foods — including yoghurt, fruit, juices, and other products containing alcohol-forming yeasts — have such minimal levels of alcohol.

4

A LWAYS VACC I N AT E YO U R C H I L D R E N

Around 97 per cent of Swedish parents choose to vaccinate their children in accordance with the national immunisation program –

one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. The effectiveness and safety of public vaccines is constantly monitored, and no vaccine is added to the schedule unless there is a thoroughly satisfactory safety margin. Vaccinations are medical interventions that save many lives every day. By following your national immunisation program, you can provide your child with excellent protection against seriously dangerous diseases. Do it.

5

A VO I D A L L E R GY TESTS

The definition of an allergy is having allergic symptoms to something that is not actually harmful. You may see offers for ‘allergy tests’ at clinics and online. The term ‘allergy tests’ is misleading because these tests can’t reveal whether or not a child is allergic. Instead, they show whether a child has IgE antibodies against various allergens, which is called being ‘sensitised’. The presence of antibodies in a child’s system is not a symptom and, hence, is not evidence of an allergy. It is pointless finding out whether a child has been sensitised to something if they don’t exhibit any symptoms. Sensitisation without symptoms is very common, and should not be treated. There is no research which suggests that a child should avoid a substance to which they have been sensitised.

C L U B C U LT U R E Parents in need of comfort, advice and childcare can find it all – with a bar – at Peace and Riot

“When you have

kids, suddenly the world is not your oyster”

B

eing a parent is an enormous privilege, and we’re so lucky when we get the chance to watch our kids grow and become the amazing people we know they’ll be. That’s the disclaimer done. It also SUCKS. Suddenly the world is not your oyster – it is a carefully planned excursion to the local café where you may or may not manage to eat a slice of cake without getting crumbs into the eyes of your perfect new baby. Not to mention constantly questioning why cake is now part of your daily diet. Or it is to the local playgroup which has a 30 minute window, in which you or may not stand a chance of getting there before the song starts, which in turn means you miss the offering of a lukewarm cup of weak tea. When you have kids, the place where you used to go all the time doesn’t want you any more, and where they do want you, you’d rather not set foot. Parenthood is not just a change in circumstances, it is change in self-perception – and not always for the better. Identity matters. On top of all this identity change, we then have the logistical and emotional challenges of returning, or not returning, to our former working life. Suddenly we might run our own business, become a freelancer, negotiate flexible hours or condensed hours. Either way – it’s a lot.

Where can people turn for affordable and ad hoc childcare support? Or just for advice to negotiate the huge and rapid changes occurring in the workplace? There’s no one-stop shop, and though some options are genuinely amazing, they are often out of the financial reach of the vast majority of people. Before Peace + Riot, the choice was always either/or. Peace + Riot is a kitchen, bar and workspace with childcare on site. ‘Peace Keepers’ work just like home-helps would – except (finally!), you’re not at home. Someone else has done the meal planning, the shopping, the cooking, the washing up – and someone else is keeping your kids entertained while you can just catch up with life admin, that email you were trying to finish, or with your friend or partner who you’ve not managed a full conversation with since the spring of 2019. When you become a member of Peace + Riot you will be able to book your table, have one free visit a week (or use them in a block), discounts on food and drink and multiple discounts with partner brands. That’s the micro needs taken care of. We also take care of the macro. Your membership gives you access to coaching and training events and to a Member’s Portal where you will be able to network with your peers. Last but not least Peace+ Riot is a fantastic place to come for delicious food and a menu of carefully crafted house drinks.
