Our weddings shoot on location in Essex
veryone's hearts must go out to all the people who have been trying to get married over the past year. Multiple postponements along with restrictions on numbers, travel and venues have put a dampener on countless couples' plans. Now that things are beginning to look brighter, we've embraced our traditional May issue weddings theme with enthusiasm and have been thrilled to be able to shoot the new season's beautiful gowns on location at the impressive Leez Castle in Essex. Our weddings section is full of advice and inspiration for anyone planning their big day, however it might pan out – and here's hoping for some big gatherings soon. Also this month we're celebrating the approach of summer, with lots of ideas for al fresco dining and drinking, summer fragrances and a look at sunglasses, plus a preview of upcoming events to book now. We're looking forward to the long-awaited and imminent reopening of the Museum of the Home in Shoreditch – and we offer a peek inside that too. Enjoy May.

ast year was the biggest K+C Art Week (KCAW) ever, with more than 200 events taking place in over 120 venues. This year it will be expanding throughout the summer season with a festival that elevates the magic and shared experiences of public art and live performance. A big part of KCAW core programing is the much loved and admired KCAW Public Art Trail that aims to connect all corners of the borough through arts and culture. Since last year, the team behind KCAW has been working hard to bring ambitious new public art to the streets of west London once again. Now in its fourth edition, the KCAW Public Art Trail will launch on 21 June with over 10 installations across nine zones of the borough from Sloane Square to World's End, from Earl's Court to Notting Hill and more. Since 2018, KCAW has presented a series of thought-provoking installations and murals strategically placed in locations across Kensington and Chelsea to interact with the public in unique and unusual ways. In order to give greater visibility to locally based creative talent, KCAW launched an open call to artists, creative organisations and curators to submit pre-existing artworks to be displayed in a variety of public spaces for one month or longer during Kensington + Chelsea Art Week in Summer 2021. The theme for 2021 is: REIMAGINE. Participation in KCAW is an opportunity to engage new audiences; it provides a platform on which to present work in extraordinary locations while exhibiting alongside renowned cultural organisations and leading artists.

Beef Pho Serves 4
This is a simplified version of a traditional and complex Vietnamese soup called pho – pronounced ‘fur’. It became popular with urban dwellers with the inundation of authentic and inexpensive Vietnamese eateries in the 1970s, especially in the Sydney suburbs of Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Marrickville, and the Melbourne suburbs of Richmond, Footscray and Springvale. Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 3 hours
INGREDIENTS • 4 litres/140 fl oz (16 3/4 cups) beef stock • 5-cm/2-inch piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and finely sliced • 2 cinnamon sticks • 4 star anise • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) fish sauce • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar • 400 g/14 oz gravy beef (beef shin) or brisket, cut into bite-size pieces • 200 g/7 oz dried rice noodles • 1 white onion, finely sliced • 200 g/7 oz uncooked beef fillet, finely sliced To serve • 100 g/3 1/2 oz (1/2 cup) bean sprouts • 2 limes, quartered • 2 small red chillies (chiles), finely sliced • 1 spring onion (scallion), finely sliced handful of Thai basil leaves
METHOD 1 Combine the stock, ginger, cinnamon, star anise, fish sauce and sugar in a large saucepan and bring to the boil over a high heat. Add the beef, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3 hours, or until the beef is very tender. Cover the saucepan and cook over a low heat to keep warm while cooking the noodles. 2 Put the rice noodles into a heatproof bowl, cover with boiling water and leave for about 4 minutes until soft. Drain well and divide among large serving bowls. 3 Divide the onion and finely sliced beef fillet over the noodles. Ladle the hot soup over the noodles, which will cook the raw beef slices and soften the onion. Serve with bean sprouts, lime quarters, sliced chillies (chiles), spring onions (scallions) and basil on the side to taste.
INGREDIENTS
Asian Coleslaw Serves 6
Salads don’t feature in all Asian cuisines, but closer to the equator, and closer to Australia, you will find all those zesty, crispy and crunchy salads that embody the freshness of Southeast Asian food. And all the fresh ingredients thrive in the Australian climate. Asian ‘slaw’ recipes were de rigueur in food magazines in the early part of this century. The ingredients themselves are not new to Australia. In the 1970s hundreds of thousands fled Laos as refugees. Many came to Australia and settled in Tasmania, the southernmost island state. The Hmong people started growing and selling Asian herbs at farmers’ markets in the 1980s. The Chinese market gardens in the Sydney suburb of La Perouse, meanwhile, have been growing Asian vegetables and herbs since around the turn of the 20th century. These small lots are protected under the heritage act. Compared to earlier versions, this coleslaw is less about comfort food and more about freshness and crispness with a kick of chilli (chile). Preparation time 20 minutes
• 600 g/1 lb 5 oz Chinese (napa) cabbage, finely shredded • 2 spring onions (scallions), finely sliced on the bias • 1 small bunch coriander (cilantro), coarsely chopped • 1 small bunch fresh mint, coarsely chopped • 20 g/ 3/4 oz dill, coarsely chopped • 2 large green chillies (chiles), finely sliced For the dressing • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) rice vinegar • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) light soy sauce • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 60 ml/2 fl oz (4 tablespoons) olive oil • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
METHOD 1 To make the dressing, put the vinegar, soy sauce and sugar into a bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Stir through the remaining ingredients and set aside. 2 Put the cabbage into a large bowl. Pour half of the dressing over the cabbage and use your hands to toss the cabbage around at the same time as crunching it between your hands. 3 Stir through the spring onions, half the coriander, mint, dill and green chilli. 4 Serve with the remaining herbs and chilli scattered over.

Chicken Parmi (Parmigiana) Serves 4
I’m not a gambling man, but if I were, I would bet that if you randomly chose a pub in Australia, you would find chicken parmi (parmigiana) – also called ‘chicken parma’ – on the menu. Preparation time 10 minutes Cooking time 45 minutes
INGREDIENTS
1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/ Gas Mark 4. Line a roasting pan with baking (parchment) paper. 2 Put the chicken breast fillets onto a clean chopping (cutting) board. With the palm of one hand on the chicken, carefully cut through the centre of the fillet, horizontally, to give 2 pieces. Repeat with the second chicken fillet. Put the 4 pieces of chicken between two sheets of clingfilm (plastic wrap) in one layer. Use a meat mallet or rolling pin to pound the chicken so it is an even thickness, ideally no thicker than 5mm (1/4 inch), then transfer to a plate. 3 Put the flour onto a plate, beat the eggs in a bowl and put the breadcrumbs on a plate. Toss the chicken in the flour, then dip in the beaten egg, and finally press into the breadcrumbs until coated all over. Return to the plate and set aside. 4 Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan or skillet over a medium heat. When the butter is melted and sizzling, add 2 chicken breasts and cook for 5 minutes on each side until golden. Adjust the heat if the breadcrumbs are cooking too quickly. Transfer to the prepared roasting pan and repeat to cook the remaining chicken, adding it to the pan. 5 Pour the tomato passata (tomato puree) over the top of each chicken breast, add the mozzarella, Parmesan and a sprinkle of oregano, then bake in the oven for 30 minutes, or until golden. Scatter over the parsley and chilli (red pepper) flakes, if using, and serve hot.
• 2 large skinless and boneless chicken breast fillets, about 200g/7 oz each • 60 g/2 1/4 oz (7 1/4 tablespoons) plain (all-purpose) flour • 2 eggs • 200 g/7 oz (3 cups) stale breadcrumbs • 125 ml/4 1/4 fl oz (1/2 cup) vegetable oil • 2 tablespoons butter • 250 ml/8 fl oz (1 cup) tomato passata (tomato puree) • 200 g/7 oz mozzarella cheese, sliced • 50 g/2 oz (1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons) finely grated • Parmesan cheese • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1 tablespoon finely chopped flat-leaf parsley • 1/2 teaspoon chilli (red pepper) flakes (optional)

LOOP
Slow fashion is on the rise. Absolutely focuses on new sustainable cashmere brand, Loop By P E A R L B OY D
R
esearch shows that consumers care more about how their clothes are made now than they did before the pandemic. On average, 30% of clothing in our wardrobes has not been worn for at least a year and almost two thirds of consumers now claim that they would avoid a brand if it was damaging to the environment. Last year, the UK was named one of the 15 biggest polluters in the textile industry and there is a growing need for retailers to be transparent about their sustainability practices, because we are all giving these issues a lot more thought than ever before. In this climate, Claire Heathcote and Richard Levin launched Loop Cashmere, a sustainable brand offering environmentally friendly cashmere products for the conscious consumer. Loop is accelerating the pace of change for the slow fashion movement with ethically and sustainably produced products that are manufactured in short runs, providing guilt-free luxury. The brand’s first collection features a range of luxurious knitwear and accessories balancing timeless looks with a contemporary edge, with stockists including sustainable online marketplace Wolf & Badger. Carefully selected supply chain partners and processes that are kind to both planet and people include a factory in Mongolia with an on-site water treatment plant reusing water used throughout the production process and a UK distribution centre owned and run by a disabled workforce. Loop employs sustainable practices at all points in its supply chain from its yarn supply which is certified by The Good Cashmere Standard – an independent standard
promoting sustainable cashmere – to its packaging which is 95% recyclable. A report from Mintel found more than half of people said that sustainability is important when purchasing clothing, while more than a third began thinking more about the topic after watching documentaries about the environment. Claire Heathcote said: “We know consumers are increasingly conscious about where their clothing comes from and how it gets to them; we want to help consumers slow their consumption and appreciate the garments in their wardrobe and love them for longer. Loop is more than just a premium knitwear brand – we’re intent on leaving the world a little better than we found it.” LO O P CA S H M E R E loopcashmere.co.uk

f there’s one thing we’ve been missing above all else this past year, it’s human connection. But as well as the lack of socialising, most of us have neglected our bodies too. Unless you’re in the camp that took up jogging (and actually stuck to it), the stress of the past year and staying indoors has meant not only less movement, but also less self care, as gyms, spas and beauty treatments were put on pause. A duo hoping to repair and rebuild our physical and mental wellbeing are Alice Vaughan and Scarlet Crawley. Their massage company, Masaj, has built up a loyal following since Crawley founded it in 2016, aiming to provide a different kind of bodywork experience for its customers. Rather than a one-fits-all system, Masaj has a more individual approach to massage, creating a welcoming atmosphere from the very minute you book your appointment right through to when you leave their gorgeous new Charlotte Road premises (they were previously located off Hackney Road). The Masaj team doesn't just massage out tension (goodness knows we need it), but helps to get you in better shape, physically and mentally, with a concise menu of six treatment types. Determined to make a real difference, not just in the beauty and wellness industry, but to each individual customer, their mission is admirable. And at £75 for an hour, it’s reasonably priced too. HEALTH & BEAUTY • Q&A
For those dieting, supplement with a multi-vitamin to ensure you get the correct amount of nutrients that your body needs. Omega oils are also great for your skin, brain and body. Salicylic acid could be your BFF. 6 If you suffer from keratosis pilaris (red spots and rough skin on your upper arms, thighs and bum), blackheads or hormonal spots on your chin, try using a salicylic acid product as it will gently exfoliate the skin and clear out pores. Salicylic acid also has an anti-inflammatory effect so it is a miracle worker at tackling blemishes that have become inflamed. Blitz those blemishes. If you have 7 a lot of redness left over from acne, speak to a dermatologist about hydrocortisone, as it can dramatically help to reduce the discolouration. Laser treatments can also banish that red and brown pigment left over from blemishes. Avoid stress. Known to cause 8 breakouts, try to keep your stress levels under control with yoga or daily meditation. Don’t forget your hands. Keep 9 them in peak condition by massaging sweet almond oil daily, and your nails will be stronger and your hands will be super soft on the big day. Pay your lips some service. Invest in 10 a good quality lip balm and re-apply regularly throughout the day, every day for a week before your wedding and your lips will be beautifully soft and smooth – and most importantly, kissable!
5
W E D D I N G B E L L E S How to prepare your skin for the big day – with Skinfluencer
T
he words beautiful and bride may be synonymous but aside from the dress, hair and makeup, there is one element to consider to ensure you are truly radiant on your big day – your skin. Located in Chelsea, the team at Skinfluencer can ensure that whatever your skincare woe, you can have skin that wows on your wedding day thanks to their array of cutting-edge science-backed protocols. Sharin Shafer, who is at the helm of this dynamic brand, shared her top 10 tips with Absolutely…
Have your skin assessed by a professional at least 6 months before your wedding. The longer you have to correct any skin issues, the better. Treatments should start 6 to 12 months before your wedding day. This is because it takes time for
1
your cells to turn over and for collagen to build. We can transform your skin, but it doesn’t necessarily happen overnight. Follow a recommended routine that 2 includes active ingredients suited to your skin. For instance, if you want glowing skin, try using products that contain AHAs (exfoliating acids) as these will help to remove dead skin cells, which tend to build up and leave our complexions looking dull and lifeless. Removing this dead layer will leave your skin looking fresher and more vibrant. Remember, a consistent routine will yield wonderful results and you can achieve wonders with the right products. Avoid new products up to three weeks 3 before your wedding day. This includes skincare, make-up, and washing powder just in case you experience any kind of a reaction. Learn to love green tea. With its 4 antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties it can help brighten the skin and reduce acne.

“A celebration of cultures expressed through technicolour pattern”

inka Ilori is a Londonbased multidisciplinary artist of a BritishNigerian heritage, who specialises in storytelling by fusing his British and Nigerian heritage to tell new stories in contemporary design. Humorous, provocative and fun, every project that he creates tells a story. Bringing Nigerian verbal traditional into playful conversation with contemporary design, Yinka Ilori’s work touches on various global themes that resonate with different audiences all over the world. Celebrated for his large-scale installations such as the 2019 Pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery, the multidisciplinary artist has now channelled his talent for colours and patterns into his first homeware collection. It is a continuation of design work inspired by his own British Nigerian heritage and childhood, a colourful celebration of two cultures expressed through abstract, technicolour pattern and contemporary craft. Unexpected, functional household items that evoke memories from his own upbringing have been reworked as
colourful artworks. Each has their own narrative and backstory, meant to instil a sense of optimism and joy, to act in their own small way as a distraction to the dark times that we’re facing this year. These pieces are fun and colourful, joyous, summery and appealing with their bold shapes and bright colours that mark a welcome movement away from muted, subtle homewares. Ilori creates stories through his designs, reinterpreting happy moments and experiences into his artworks. These vibrant bowls, textiles and more, are all made by skilled craftspeople in Portugal, Poland and Nepal - and the collection is stocked at SCP. Y I N K A I LO R I yinkailori.com

his recently transformed Georgian terraced house in Stockwell exudes dark eye-catching character. A sixmonth refurbishment created a classic and spacious interior, a world away from what was a dark and cramped space of sub-divided rooms that restricted flow and practicality. Original features were restored and reinstated – and the result is an impressive space, full of generous proportions and contemporary details that reflect the house’s original grandeur. The brief to the architects was to open up the floor-plate on each level, re-focusing attention to the large windows to both front and rear of the property, and modernise the entire interior in a way sympathetic to its heritage. The project was a full renovation, including complete layout reconfiguration from the lower ground to the second floor, and

the look was devised to reflect the language of the external surroundings, connecting it to the inside. The Fendi board in a herringbone composition from the Havwoods collection was used throughout the lower and upper ground floors, delivering a stunning sense of detail and cohesion. Chosen for its high class and luxurious aesthetic, the herringbone board was also matched with the exquisite Venture Plank Fendi board across the bedrooms and landings to help exude a calmer quality to the home while differentiating the areas in the property. Each room throughout the home embraces a deep monochrome colour palette that gives the interior instant wow-factor. The monochrome theme was carried throughout and into the lower ground floor, with accents of brass and ironmongery to help lift and lighten the space. A mirrored drinks cabinet at the head of the dining room acts as a focal point whilst the bedroom grounds the space and reflects the building’s true heritage. The home is further characterised by vibrant pops of yellow and green with botanical touches that pull the overall scheme together. The end result is a property that has been rejuvenated and brought back to life.

Oiled wood floors are very easy to care for. For everyday cleaning to remove dust or loose debris a broom, vacuum cleaner or dry mop is all that is required. For more thorough cleaning, damp mop using a diluted oiled wood floor cleaner. In public places where the footfall is greater, oiled wood floors may be damp mopped on a daily basis and should be treated regularly with a maintenance wax. This may be applied to the most heavily used areas or to the whole floor, spreading it with an electric, single-disc buffing machine with a beige pad. Maintenance wax need only be applied to residential flooring when the wood begins to look a little lifeless.

All Havwoods floors are tested for stain and spillage resistance When floors are being installed into commercial spaces or busy kitchens, it is often a good idea to apply maintenance products soon after installation to ensure that the surface finish is maintained in these more demanding areas.
H OW S H O U L D I M A I N TA I N ITS DURABILITY?
Day-to-day cleaning involves sweeping your floor and cleaning with a spray-mop and the correct cleaning solution for the surface finish. Periodic maintenance can be carried out on all floors through the application of a maintenance product, such as a refresher for lacquered floors or Liquid Wax Cleaner for UV oil, natural oil and hard-wax oil finishes.

Liberty has always appealed to the heart and spirit of the collector, those with a passion for heirloom pieces that transcend generations. With his passion for exquisite textiles and objets d’art acquired on travels around the globe, the store’s founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty was the Original Collector. He imagined his store as a great ship filled with treasures and docked in the streets of London. Inspired by Arthur, the spirit of the collector lives on in this collection – beginning with a celebration of the Victorian-era documentation and curation of plants, foliage and flowers in Floribunda. The designers explored

pigments such as madder and clay that were adopted by Arthur Liberty for his early textile dyeing in the 19th century, to the vivid organic shades of fennel, artichoke, peacock feathers and dragonfly wings – each colour story evokes a rich botanical sensibility. Renowned for bold and innovative design, the Liberty design team have used the Modern Collector Wallpapers and Fabrics collections to bring the vibrancy of the Liberty aesthetic indoors, using three pillars from its design heritage as inspiration: Floribunda, Art Nouveau and The Tree of Life. The results speak for themselves. Liberty Fabrics has been at the cutting-edge of design and decorative arts since 1875. Printing takes place at a mill in northern Italy which uses both innovative digital technology and age-old techniques. From signature, obsessively fine-tuned Tana Lawn cotton and luxurious silk to lightweight linen, Liberty Fabrics are brilliant canvases for bespoke creations of all kinds. Liberty recognises that the production of fabric has significant environmental and social impact on the world and is committed to responsible production.

hen the Museum of the Home closed its doors for a refurbishment, it wasn’t expecting to remain closed for three years. But after an extended wait, during which time the notion of home has become more emotive than ever, the museum is now reopening this month following an extensive £18 million redevelopment. The renovation of the original Grade I listed 18th-century almshouses and the creation of new spaces, masterminded by Wright & Wright Architects, will greatly improve visitor access and double the space for exhibitions, events and collections. The redevelopment will include new spaces for events and activities as well as more exhibition space and a new library that will open up public access to the museum’s extensive archive for the first time. Through a dynamic programme of exhibitions, artist commissions, performances, discussions, collaborations, festivals and events, the museum will address topical issues such as homelessness, immigration, mental health and the environment, while responding to local, national and global narratives. Visitors will be able to explore the subject of home from diverse viewpoints and creative responses, both historical and contemporary. The museum’s director Sonia Solicari says: “We hope visitors will be intrigued and inspired by the personal stories of home life which run through our new and reimagined galleries and programmes – from diverse contemporary and historical stories in the Home Galleries, to Stay Home, our rapidresponse collecting project documenting home life during lockdown, and Behind the Door, our pioneering partnership with the London Homeless Collective. Knock KNOCK Is your door knocker a thing of beauty? Absolutely discovers some beautiful door furniture By P E A R L B OY D
H “We see our door knockers as functional sculptures”
usband and wife team Jenny and Mike are the people behind Adams and Mack. Their story started when they found an unusual fish door knocker in an antique shop. They loved the look of it but, when it came to the fitting, they had reservations about drilling a hole through their solid oak front door. With a background in casting bronze, they were no strangers to the ins and outs of designing and making intricate pieces in metal. So, they decided to cast a fish knocker complete with an invisible fixing that seamlessly attached to their door. Having successfully created a salmon door knocker, they went on to develop a range of original designs for others to enjoy. Their focus was to produce a sustainable, quality product using traditional methods of casting. “We see our door knockers more as functional sculptures. They are an expression of character and a signature of one's home,” they say. With their knowledge of metal casting and the help of a friend living in Delhi, they began to search for a partner foundry who shared their ethos. After several visits to India, they forged links with a small family-run foundry. They are a small team of highly skilled artisans whose expertise has been passed down from generation to generation. They cast each piece by hand with unerring attention to detail. As the production process is split between the UK and India, a shared passion for beautiful, handcrafted, sustainable products is an integral part of the success of the business. Adams & Mack’s unique door knocker designs are inspired by nature. Each new
design starts life as a simple pencil sketch. Once happy with the form, moulds are created and sent to the team in India. When casting is complete the door knockers are finished and assembled in the workshop in South Devon. Each design is available in a range of colours, including an antique finish which is achieved using a chemical-free process. Q Tell us about India’s room. What was your decorating vision? A I wanted to create the countrychic vibe that I love so much while keeping it playful and girly at the same time. Both myself and India love the outdoors and spend hours playing outside, especially now that Pedro, the dog is with us. Wellies have become our footwear of choice! With India’s room, I really wanted to bring the outdoors in, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to do just that. Q How did you pull it all together in terms of choosing the colours, furniture and styling the room?
A I love nature and all the colours that it has to offer so it was easy to find inspiration there. I wanted to go for a modern vintage look for the interior with a French rustic feel and was delighted to work together with Scandiborn and Joanna from Eklektik Studio in pulling the room scheme together. Together, we narrowed down to a few neutral colour schemes that would work for us. I wanted to keep the room light and airy so warm beige colours were top of my list. We chose the beautiful Art Deco inspired Harlequin furniture by Cam Cam Copenhagen from Scandiborn which has a classic yet contemporary look and adds lots of visual interest with its intricate lattice detailing. Q Did India have any input into the design? A India was involved in every step of the process and had a strong opinion when it came to choosing her wallpaper. We went with the Pressed Leaves Wallpaper, which is a beautiful decorative floral print design and gorgeous play kitchen, both available at Scandiborn. She was over the moon to see her room coming together and she is very proud of her new space. Q Is there an element that you’re most proud of? A Her new, grown up bed! Initially I was worried about transitioning her from a cot bed but together with Eklektik Studio and on my mum’s advice we decided to give it a try. I have to say since having her new bed, India has not once left it. She was just ready and I am glad we took that step at the right time. Q Does India have a favourite part of the room? “India likes to keep the room very neat and tidy”
A She adores the bamboo table and chairs where she hosts numerous tea parties of which I am a frequent guest myself! We both love the room, and even when she is not here, I come in here sometimes. India likes to keep the room very neat and tidy and I should encourage her to mess it up a bit more! Q Are there pieces that are intended to grow with India, or do you think you’ll change things around as she gets older? A I will let her express her preferences as she grows older but hopefully she will always love the country aesthetic as much as I do so this theme should stay with us for a long time. The room has been designed in a way which makes little changes achievable. Key pieces such as the wardrobe and bed are very
90
neutral and can later be accessorised with anything she likes if we decide to move on from the country style. Q And finally, do you have a go-to place to look for interiors ideas and where you do you get inspiration from? A On this particular project I have worked with Eklektik Studio and Scandiborn for the furniture, toys and accessories and they were perfect at reading my likes and preferences. It’s always great when a designer listens to what you want and I am so happy that they achieved the exact look that I desired. Otherwise my style varies, if I find a piece that I really love, I will go for it and then match everything else around it. eklektik-studio.com scandiborn.co.uk

edding gift lists are definitely branching out and one of our favourite trends is for artisan creations. The bonus for your guests is that they are gifting something that they know ticks boxes for style, individuality and matching your taste. All the gift list companies offer choice names, but we're very taken by some of the designers working with The Wedding Present Company. For instance, Cheskie offers superb talking-point silver and copper holloware made in central Mexico. We love the toucan and cockatoo creamer jugs in double-plated silver or copper (from £270). Also check out The Wedding Present Company's Issy Granger glass candlesticks – elegant with a delightful antique meets modern flavour (from £22). They also stock her lovely carafes and jugs. Of course, if you can't find the designer you want on their books, just ask. It's all part of the service. weddingpresentco.com

Juliet Glaves brings a set designer's eye to floral arrangements
ou may not think you know Juliet Glaves' work, but you almost certainly do if you've ever admired one of Temperley London's lush flower crowns – invariably a feature of the British designer's bridal collection shoots. Juliet brings a theatrical and set designer's eye to fashion shoots, film, TV and events, as well as helping brides' dreams come true (she works on limited weddings each year). What is really exciting about her approach is her founding principles of seasonality and sustainability – key themes coming through in every aspect of bridal right now, and especially so in flowers. Many consider Juliet a pioneer in this approach, since she not only designs with flowers, but also grows her own on a large and verdant plot in Shropshire. Her flower farm initiative began after a 2007 documentary she made for the BBC about the traditional cut-flower industry in Britain – at that stage almost rendered extinct by hothouse imports. Now her carefully tended acres are a mecca for wildlife (win-win for brides whose flowers have also looked after Brothers pollinators) and take us backLeeming to a time when bespoke invitation handbrides carried whatever wasfeaturing in season. drawn illustration. There is, says Juliet, "a magical quality leemingbrothers.co.uk to flowers that have lived a natural life". julietglaves.com

• Listen to your floral designer's advice – they know what works and also what will stand up to a long wedding day. • Be inspired by local growers – there's now a network of great florists who work very sustainably.

irtual bridal appointments have been part of the bridal scene for a while now – always useful for brides living overseas or with a busy working schedule. But now they are being used to help brides, grooms and guests make their shopping decisions if they can't or don't want to visit in person right now. At Emmy London, for example, virtual appointments are helping brides and occasion goers choose a gorgeous pair of collection or bespoke shoes. You can have a one-to-one with a stylist and create the design in the colour you want, with perfect finishing-touch details. Lalage Beaumont also offers virtual appointments for glamorous mother of the bride and guest outfits, helping to narrow down the kind of look that will work with the event, the season and your style. All designers will tell you that nothing beats face to face (and there are lots of safety measures in place at a personal appointment), but right now we salute this approach to helping people get started on finding their dream outfit without having to travel. emmylondon.com and lalagebeaumont.com

e're predicting a new wave of couples looking at auctions as a way to add style to their home. One reason is antique furniture is at an historically depressed price point – you can pick up a Georgian chest of drawers for a fraction of what you would have paid a decade or so ago and often the craftsmanship is superb. The trend here is for one or two choice pieces that sit comfortably alongside more modern finds. Also check out the 20th Century sales – you'll find pieces from names such as Heal's and Liberty in the mix, alongside quality mid-century style by the likes of Ercol (now fetching quite high prices at specialist sales). The Saleroom is the place to check for sales up and down the country and these days you can bid remotely or join a timed auction. As ever, check the condition report, set your limit and factor in the commission – think around 30 per cent. If you buy art, you may also have to pay an additional fee under Artists' Resale Rights. Why not add an auction gift fund to your wedding list? saleroom.com

ith many brides yet to set the date (even find the place), how do you decide what to choose for a 2021 or 2022 wedding? We spoke to Clare Thompson of The Wedding Club to get insights into some of the key upcoming trends spotted at the New York and Barcelona virtual shows. • Designers are including lots of square necklines – a classic look revived in different ways on both ballgowns and more form-fitting dresses. • Off the shoulder remains a key trend. Also look out for dresses with adjustable features such as half-sleeves – these are becoming popular across collections. • Florals are always in the mix, but there are wonderful 3D and appliqué embellishments for the 2021-22 season. • Romantic and softer, flowing lines are gaining ground. There is also a trend coming through for clean and simple lines and minimal embellishment. thewedding-club.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

ountry House Weddings’ portfolio of six exclusive-use wedding venues are the perfect backdrop for a dream celebration. All the properties combine history with glamour, and have perfect spaces for a memorable event – whether you are after a classic romantic castle, lavish grounds for an outdoor party, a grand hall for the wedding feast or a glamorous ballroom. With exclusive use, the property is yours alone for the duration and this brings many benefits, including space to spread out and scope to dress the event to match your style – although these historic properties need very little dressing. Country House Weddings has a dedicated in-house team to help with every planning detail, plus a contact list of trusted approved suppliers, so you are in capable hands. When it comes to properties you are spoiled for choice. Holmewood Hall in Cambridgeshire has a decadent Gold Room with 18-carat gold-leaf ceiling for the ceremony, while the Banqueting Hall is a superb space for your wedding breakfast. In summer, you can marry outside at The Bandstand overlooking picturesque parkland. Guests can stay over in style as the property sleeps 40 – this includes a sumptuous bridal suite. For pure magic, head to Clearwell Castle in the idyllic Forest of Dean. Not only is the exterior picture perfect,
but there’s also a dazzling ballroom with marble columns and a 75-foot aisle. This is a great spot for weekend parties, with the estate accommodating 95 in castle rooms and homely cottages. Essex offers two period gems, each with its own unique identity (and both are superbly located for London and major airports). Leez Priory, as featured in our shoot, is a Tudor manor with fabulous Grand Tower, beautiful lake and a magnificent Great Hall. Accommodation for 50 guests includes a super-cute cottage in the grounds. Gosfield Hall sits in Constable country and is a former royal palace. With fine Georgian proportions, its glamorous spaces include a wood-panelled gallery with 120-foot aisle and a Grand Salon with hand-painted ceiling. There’s a beautiful Rococo bridal suite among its 23 bedrooms. If you’d like to experience a Tuscan-style wedding closer to home, Bourton Hall in Warwickshire is the place. With lavish Italianate architecture – complete with atmospheric former Catholic chapel – it has a stunning banqueting hall and 21 bedrooms for guests. The bridal suite has a stone balcony with views of the Leam Valley. Somerset is a firm favourite for UK destination weddings and St Audries Park is the place to experience a magical larger-scale celebration, and with panoramic views of the sea. This Gothicstyle mansion is an unforgettable backdrop and its grand spaces include an opulent Victorian orangery. Facilities for weekend parties are superb, with space for over 100 guests to stay over in the main house and cottages and lodges dotted about the grounds. The
Couture Gallery Britta Kjerkegaard of
The Couture Gallery on creating perfect style for brides
BRITTA KJERKEGAARD
Q What is your fashion background and
how did you get into bridal design? A I wanted to be a designer from a very early age and did my early practical sewing and pattern cutting training in my native Demark. Then I worked my way up in haute couture internationally. This included a spell in a Milan fashion house and with UK designers such as Philip Treacy and Antony Price. While working with Danish designer Ann Wiberg I made a few evening pieces for friends and the sister of a friend asked me to design her wedding dress. It felt really special. This was around 2007, which was a very traditional time in bridal with heavy full dresses. I began to create gowns with a more modern twist – less fabric, lighter to wear, but still with the
glamour. And from the start, I included some coloured wedding gowns. That’s not so unusual now, but it was back then. Q What is your approach to bridal? A My approach is about luxurious fabrics
and impeccable couture cut and fit – and I particularly love full gowns. While many of my gowns have the classic princess or mermaid shape, they are created to be light, with clever integral corsetry that is both easy to wear and very flattering. Brides are often surprised at how comfortable and light my dresses feel when they try them on. Every gown in my couture collection is created and designed around each individual bride. I’d say that my dresses are for modern brides who still love the idea of dressing up. Q Tell us about your new Garden Q How does the design process work? A A first appointment is a chance to try on
lots of dresses. Typically, there are 40-50 gowns at my Kensington store at any one time. I always encourage brides to try on different shapes and styles to find out which silhouette is the most flattering. Once a bride has decided they want me to create their dress, I will present three or four sketches and then work with them to narrow down to the final design. From there, it’s the full couture process, with a calico fitting and between two and four silk fittings. Ideally, it’s a process that takes nine to 12 months. Beyond the couture collections, I also offer Modern Bride – a contemporary collection of sophisticated gowns and separates that are perfect for smaller weddings or for brides who want a second outfit.
of Eden couture collection? A It is all about statement dresses and
fairytale elements. There are traditionalmeets-modern twists in some gowns, such as demure fronts and low backs. A really strong feature is adaptability, a skirt can be removed to transform the dress – for example, take it from long and voluminous to a chic short dress. This works brilliantly for brides who might be having a smaller formal ceremony followed by a big gathering. With all that has happened, it has become even more important as part of the celebration. It’s my job – and my pleasure – to make their dream dress a reality. T H E C O U T U R E G A L L E RY 6 Campden Street, W8; thecouturegallery.com

BEAUTY BOOST
Weddings BEAUTY LOOKS
IMPECCABLE WEDDING BEAUTY BY SOPHIE TILLEY
Bridal SKINCARE TIPS
Beauty expert Sophie Tilley knows everything about preparation for big events – working with both brides and celebrities. Here she gives advice on being wedding-day ready, and it all starts with your skin...
1. Cleanse properly
You may be waiting to set the date, but it’s never too early to start perfecting your regime. Two leading bridal specialists give us their advice for being your best self on the day
It may seem obvious but many of us aren’t doing this first step quite right. And think about it, if you’re not cleaning your skin properly (that’s surface skin as well as deep into the pores) none of your serums, moisturisers and treatments can penetrate efficiently. Consider what you’re using in the morning separately to the evening as these ideally should be different textures. Morning is easy: a non-foaming facewash with a gel or cream-based product will do the trick. The evening is where you should spend a bit more time after a long day, where you’ve likely been wearing skincare and make-up. Remove your makeup with a simple cleanser or micellar water, then clean your skin thoroughly. A balm cleanser is ideal for this as it will melt away impurities from fine lines and pores. Use with a muslin or microfibre cloth for extra polishing benefits. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

2. Exfoliate regularly
New, fresh skin is what we all want. Uncover it by promoting your skin’s renewal process. This means sloughing off any dead, dry surface skin but also stimulating the next layer to come through. We’re not talking scrubs here (save that for your body) or anything too abrasive – gently does it. The best way is by using a liquid exfoliant. One containing BHA’s (beta-hydroxy acid) and AHA’s (alpha-hydroxy acid) will rid your face of surplus debris and you don’t even need to remove it. Some are mild enough to use every day, others you can space out throughout the week. Ease yourself in and get ready to see glass-like skin revealed.
3. SPF always
This should go without saying but protecting your skin from sun damage and all the harmful rays we’re faced with on a daily basis, is integral. Sun protection (that’s UVA & UVB rays) is the most antiageing product you can apply to your skin. Rain or shine, winter or summer, if you can see your hand in front of your face, you should be wearing sunscreen. retinol at night. Antioxidant vitamin C yields a host of benefits: radiance boosting, treating uneven skin tone (pigmentation) and calming redness. Available in a variety of percentages, go for the highest you can afford. Retinol (only to be applied at night) renews skin by promoting cell turnover. It will gradually shed the outermost dead cells of your skin, revealing fresh, new layers. Retinol comes in a variety of strengths so ease yourself in and gradually build up resilience. Be sure to wear SPF the following day – very important as retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays.
5. Treat your skin
Whether it’s a mask or a moisturiser, keep an eye out for these key ingredients, depending on your main concern. If you want hydration, look for hyaluronic acid (naturally occurring in our skin), which can hold a hundred times its own weight in water. Humectants like glycerin draw moisture to the top layer of the skin, a great combination. For breakouts, salicylic acid is a good antidote, helping to control excess sebum whilst calming any redness or sensitivity. If you want an all-rounder Niacinamide is a great ingredient, helping skin to repair, retain hydration levels and build resilience. sophietilley.uk
4. Serum counts
Think of serum as taking your vitamins before eating your meal. We want to boost the nutrients and actives to improve our skin’s daily diet. The key couple I’d say here are vitamin C for the morning and

GREAT MAKE-UP STARTS WITH GREAT SKIN, SAYS SOPHIE TILLEY
HAIR BY SUMMER LANGTON, MICHAEL VAN CLARKE
Great WEDDING HAIR
Summer Langton, Senior Stylist and bridal expert at Michael Van Clarke in Marylebone, has expert tips on trends and pre-wedding care
The key trends:
A key trend right now is for very soft pretty hair – from loose waves to a sophisticated but relaxed chignon. Classic half up half down remains a favourite for brides (from 1960s volume to boho plaits) and works really well with a veil. It’s also smart but ensures brides still feel like themselves. Accessories are also becoming popular with brides – some choosing this route over wearing a veil – and many are also keen to change their look from an up-do for ceremony to down for the reception.
Your wedding routine
Get yourself into a good hair routine. That includes trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks, avoiding unnecessary blow drying and applying treatments (try Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Pre-wash once a week, leaving it in overnight). Do get to know the hairdresser who will be doing your hair so they know your style – and the atmosphere you want to create. I recommend a hair trial after you have chosen your dress. Take along lots of pictures – the more the better – wear a top with a similar colour and neckline and don’t be afraid to try different styles. It’s wonderful if you can time a dress fitting for after your hair trial, so you see how everything works together. vanclarke.com

Going Global
Marking its 40th birthday in 2020, Southbank International School's founding vision has seen it lead the way on teaching approach and delivery of world-class qualifications B y LIBBY NORMAN
outhbank International School marked its 40th birthday in 2020. Now a flourishing member of the Cognita Group, and with three campuses across five central-London sites, it started out small – but the founding vision has always been global and resolutely forward thinking. The school opened its doors in 1979 with a few dozen students in a former primary school near Waterloo Station. Its founder Milton Toubkin – with cofounders David Tucker, John and Susan Marberry and Stephen Bailey – envisaged a democratic and forward-thinking setting that used all London as a classroom and enabled a truly individual curriculum. Milton Toubkin, a seasoned educator and previously principal of international schools in Geneva and London, had been greatly influenced by the book The School Without Walls: Philadelphia's Parkway Program, by Professor John Bremer and Michael von Moschzisker. This charted the success of an approach that tapped into a city's rich arts, cultural and business resources. "I thought then that of all the cities in the world London was best suited to that style of education," he recalls. The concept of a 'school without walls' meant that the school building need not be so large – useful, says Milton Toubkin, because they started with a good idea but extremely limited funds. The team tapped into a wealth of resources and academic goodwill in those early days. Southbank A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

EDUCATION • FOCUS
LEFT Theatre at Southbank International School RIGHT School founder Milton Toubkin
Polytechnic (now Southbank University) gave the school access to science and language labs; music classes took place in the City Lit. They even taught classes in empty spaces at the National Theatre and Royal Festival Hall. Early positive publicity for the school's modern approach came when BBC1's Nationwide currentaffairs programme followed a group of students for the day. A national audience watched them learning their way around London, including an inspired history session in the British Museum by one of the school's teachers – coincidentally also a lecturer at the Museum. Internationalism was core and the original name – American International School – was chosen partly because the founders envisaged that the majority of the cohort would be drawn from US families resident in London. In fact, there was an influx from all points of the compass, with particularly strong cohorts from Iran and Scandinavia. Within two years, the school became known as Southbank International School. In keeping with its democratic founding principles, students helped choose the new name – indeed, students, parents and staff all had a say in one of the school's regular 'Town Meeting' open forums. The new name coincided with a move to a new site on the South Bank. The next major milestone for Southbank International School was the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 1984. While the IB Diploma is respected and widely studied in the UK today, in 1984 this was
“By 2018, once diminutive Southbank was offering education from its central London campuses to some 800 students from more than 70 countries” a radical departure. Milton Toubkin says that some of the staff had initial concerns about moving away from a British-based curriculum, but were reassured after a personal visit by the then Director General of the IB. "IB Diploma fitted right into our purpose as an international school," Milton Toubkin adds. Just over a decade later, Southbank would become the first UK school to offer all three IB programmes, from primary level through to 16+. Southbank's cohort grew exponentially, meeting the capital's demand for the kind of international education it provided. Its Notting Hill campus opened in 1988, with a primary school opening four years later. This was followed by the opening of a purpose-built Hampstead campus for primary years in 1995. With the Noughties came two further additions, one in Portland Place and another in Conway
Street, Fitzrovia. The most recent campus opening, Cleveland Street in 2018, enabled Southbank to welcome over 800 students from more than 70 countries. Provision from age 3 to 19 means students are able to progress through the school from nursery steps to stepping out into the world. Down the years, the IB has remained a cornerstone of Southbank's success, and with consistently impressive results. Last year saw a 100% pass rate, with 63 candidates reaching an average score of 36.6. Results tell only part of the story, since the very international nature of the cohort means students forge all kinds of bonds across the globe – whether they stay throughout their school career or relocate to a distant part of the world. Wherever they travel, Southbank alumni go equipped with a truly international education and London friendships made in this forward-thinking 'school without walls'. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

Ellis, said: “It is wonderful that our school has been shortlisted for the Tes Prep School of the Year Award. This shortlisting is a reflection of all the hard work of our pupils, staff and families and is recognition of its many strengths – the amazing academic results, the outstanding pastoral care and most importantly our happy girls who love school and learning, even in lockdown! I am incredibly proud of our entire school community, as was my recent predecessor, Susan Pepper.” Tes Editor Jon Severs said, “After a difficult year for all schools, it is an honour to celebrate the Tes Independent School awards, not only to celebrate excellent practice but to ensure that practice is shared far and wide. We received an unparalleled number of entries this year, which is testament to the great work all have done during the pandemic. The schools that have been shortlisted should be proud - it’s a remarkable achievement.” For the very first time, Tes Independent School Awards winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony on Friday 30 April 2021. EDUCATION • ADVICE
QUESTION TIME The experts at Gabbitas Education have the answers
ANASTASIA HATVANY SENIOR SCHOOLS CONSULTANT AND SEN SPECIALIST
My daughter's primary school has suggested she may fall into the 'gifted and talented' category. I'm uncertain what this means, so would it be a good idea to get further advice or look for a school that has expertise in managing her academic and pastoral needs?
Q
The Department of Education and Skills defines those supported by the national programme for gifted and talented education as those with abilities at a significantly higher level to their peers. The word ‘gifted’, is usually associated with academic level, and ‘talented’ refers to other areas such as sport, drama, art or music. At Gabbitas, we are often contacted by anxious parents who say, 'my daughter came out of school in tears today as she was asked to put her hand down and give the other children a chance to answer.' Is it any wonder that a bright child may become disengaged from classwork and start to either switch off or become disheartened?

Many primary schools have an excellent provision for G&T children, but parents may like to consider the private school option, where class sizes are smaller and, as such, the academic pace is a little faster. If finances are an issue – as they are for so many in the current climate – many private schools offer scholarships in different disciplines. These might include academic, music, the arts, and sport and are offered to pupils who are particularly gifted and talented. Furthermore, these scholarships can also be supplemented with a means-tested bursary, with some schools offering extremely generous bursaries of up to 100% for a particularly talented young person.
Every school has a different procedure for scholarships, whether that be attaining the best marks at the academic assessment, an excellent reference from their current school, an impressive interview or more specific assessments in music, all-round ability or sport. Applying for a scholarship is the easy part; applying for a bursary can take considerably longer – and not everyone will be successful – but if your child is happy and thriving at school, the hard work and form filling is a necessary evil. It would be a good idea to seek further advice and explore the options available to ensure that your child achieves their potential.

S P A C E Interior Designer Amy Wilson explains how to add colour into kids’ bedrooms
E
ven if you don’t have much colour elsewhere in your home, kids’ bedrooms offer a perfect excuse to embrace colour and really celebrate it. If you are nervous of a full colour explosion commitment there are some fun options for accessorising and more temporary solutions to the colour conundrum. The key is to think of childrens’ bedrooms as evolving spaces so always look for ways to inject colour in a way that can be adapted as they grow and their taste changes. Below are some quick and easy ideas with something for everyone.

The fifth wall – some refer to the ceiling and others the floor when talking of this fifth opportunity for making a statement. I think you can opt for either but not both. If trying for a pop of colour on the ceiling consider a softer tone or be brave and bold and try some wallpaper. When thinking of the floor there are some incredible rug options available on the high street. You can try an oversized patterned number or for better value consider a number of smaller round mats in bold colours. The bed is generally a focal point of any bedroom and there are plenty of opportunities to introduce colour here. A change of bedding and introducing some colourful cushions and blankets is one option but why not go a little further and have a go at making your own colourful headboard? Storage is always at a premium in children’s bedrooms so be sure to make a feature of it – paint old chests, spray old boxes and baskets. The bolder the better for this colourful project. W hen looking for storage solutions for your child’s clothes why not try a scaffold wardrobe rail with colourful hangers to make a work of art of the essentials. A rtwork is a low-cost option when looking to introduce colour to children’s bedrooms. There are some wonderful prints available from independent artists and the high street. Frame your prints in colourful frames for an added colour pop in a child friendly gallery wall at their height not yours. Alternatively leave the focus on the colourful art and use fairy lights to peg your pictures to or giant bulldog clips attached to command hooks. Childrens’ rooms can adapt well as they grow with a more sophisticated colour palette. Don’t be afraid to use a darker colour
Pretty in Print at Scandiborn Scandiborn.co.uk
as a base for pops of brighter accessories. The darker shades will work well with schemes for older children and teens too. Darker blues and greens work well with both pastel colour tones and bolder pinks and yellows. Consider a single colour room. This could be a really fun scheme to plan for, shop for and style. Imagine an entire room of green or orange – every shade of one colour in décor, bedding and art will be really playful and striking The key is not to be afraid of colour – avoid the obvious gender specific options and be bolder and more playful in your choices. Consider how you will adapt the room to work for little ones as they grow but most importantly involve them in the decision-making and even in the decorating if you are feeling brave! @amywilsoninteriors amywilsoninteriors.co.uk

t’s fair to say that the right pushchair is a top priority for any expectant parent, and too right, it is your baby’s first set of wheels. Nevertheless, it is staggering to think that although babies spend just 1-2 hours a day in their pram, compared to 8+ hours a day lying on their mattress, the time spent researching these two items is significantly different, with parents spending far less time selecting their mattress. Every new parent is undoubtedly on a mission to get more zzz’s, so it surely makes sense to research the best mattress for your little one and find out what really goes on under the surface they are lying on for over 8 hours every day. SnüzSurface Duo
SnüzSurface Pro
The next generation mattresses from Snüz offer the latest technology to provide tailored support for each stage of your child's development, from birth to 13 years. The brand behind the iconic SnüzPod Bedside Crib has worked its magic yet again, with the arrival of a brand-new collection of SnuzSurface mattresses, each promising the very best for little ones from day one. What ties this innovative range of mattresses together is the unique removable cover. It features a breathable 3D surface with a waterproof membrane, and is washable at 40°c. The SnüzSurface mattresses also boast an anti-dust mite barrier, and are available in all popular sizes from crib to cot, cot bed and beyond. For the early months, the SnüzSurface Air crib mattress provides baby with the ultimate comfort as they grow with its firm supportive core, as recommended by safe sleep experts. If you want progressive support, the SnüzSurface Duo cot and cot bed mattress features a pocket sprung core to provide baby with ongoing support as they transition into toddlerhood.
SnüzSurface Air
The SnüzSurface Pro cot and cot bed mattress will support all the way through to your little one’s 7th birthday, and it’s certainly earned the name Pro, thanks to its clever triple-layered internal structure. The unique design allows you to change the level of firmness as your child grows. Completing the set and supporting right through to when little ones are not so little anymore, the SnüzSurface Max junior mattress is suitable from 4 to 13 years. This model ensures sleepy tots can stick to the sleep surface they have grown to love, offering the same quality and comfort they’re used to. The Max mattress provides exceptional support and breathability for the comfiest night’s sleep. SNUZ To find out more visit snuz.co.uk #SupportWhereItCounts

deal for the travelling family lightweight and folding away to fit in the boot of a Mini, the Junior Jones J-Spirit is a stylish single pushchair with a reversible seat so your child can face forward or rear. The price is mid-range and it’s easy to assemble, it came in one box and all I had to do was pop the wheels on. It’s suitable from birth as it has a lay flat position. This stroller takes a bit of getting used to when it comes to folding it, but once you get the hang of it, it takes no time at all. It’s freestanding when folded and if you really need a bit more space, you can remove the back wheels. The J-Spirit even fits into the boot of a Mini. The all suspension wheels are puncture resistant so provide a smooth ride, offering you the effortless push experience that Junior Jones pushchairs are well known for. Wheels are also removable so easy to clean. One
of my favourite things about this stroller is the handlebar which is really smooth. Easy to adapt to suit all heights, so if your partner or friend is a little taller, you can simply adjust the position. The breaks are easy to push but something to point out is that you need to make sure you hear a click to make sure you baby stays safe. There is a good size basket underneath the chair, perfect for storing essential items. This model comes with a large sun canopy to keep your child protected from the sun; it also features this handy ventilation panel for warmer days. This stroller is lightweight and folds up small - so it’s perfect for the travelling family. It’s important when purchasing a pushchair that you invest in something that can grow with your child – and with all of the adaptable features the J-Spirit certainly fulfils this brief. juniorjones.com

hat do you look for in a pushchair? Over the years, we have been through so many that I now know exactly what we need. I need to be able to push one handed, and lots of space for storage. Nuna Mixx ticks both these boxes. Manoeuvrability is great with swivel wheels at front and the all wheel suspension at the back makes it a super smooth ride for off-road. The basket is ample compared to competitors, and it can be split into two parts if you want to separate your food from coats. Another great feature is that it can lay flat, so in theory this could be used from birth. A few points to look out for… we found the pushbar was a bit high (and I am not particularly short) and it’s a little wide for getting in and out of doors. We also found that the seat was a little short, so if you have an older toddler in it, they would hit their head on the hood. That said, it’s a durable, quality pushchair, with soft bamboo-blend fabric material and the handsewn leatherette handle/pushbars are stylish and comfortable. It’s also pretty easy to fold up and down. Tick from us!

Jessica Shaltout escapes to Wisteria Cottage in Dillington Estate with her family...
The Space
T
he cottage is spacious, and provides hours of fun for our toddlers to run around finding new rooms and doors to enter. The traditional thatched-roofed cottage has been renovated to a high standard, with underfloor heating throughout, contemporary decor and a large well-stocked kitchen. There are four double rooms, but since one has to be entered via the master bedroom, it’s really only suitable for children. Taking into account the sofa space in the living room, it’s ideal for four adults and 2-4 children.
The Feel
T
he renovated cottage has kept all its traditional features, yet has been modernised to a high standard. Think exposed beams, low ceilings and tiny hidden staircases paired with indulgent king-sized beds, a 55” flatscreen TV with internet connection and Bluetooth soundbar speaker and a traditional wood-burning stove.

The Luxury
T
here are two stand-out features in this cottage. The first is the ensuite bathroom that comes with a copper roll-top bath from Catchpole and Rye, large walk-in shower and underfloor heating. If you have children, this bathroom is great as there's lots of room for bedtime baths, plus ultimate relaxation for mum. The piece-de-laresistance for us was the wood-burning hot tub in the garden. For the first attempt, it takes almost four hours
W to heat up, but it’s definitely worth it. Much warmer (and greener) than an electric one, we sat stargazing with the smell of wood burning.

INGREDIENTS
METHOD
Berry Blitz: 200g frozen berries • 50g oats • 30g fresh baby spinach Chocolate Chia: 1 banana, sliced • 100g plain yoghurt • 1 tbsp cocoa • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds Tropical Burst: 200g frozen tropical fruit • 30g cashew nuts • 1 satsuma, peeled Creamy Banana: 2 bananas, sliced • 50g diced cauliflower • 1 tsp vanilla extract

The sauce should be thicker now. Remove the pan from the heat. 7 In an oven dish add the fish pie mix, frozen prawns, cherry tomatoes and frozen peas. 8 Pour the sauce over the top and mix everything together. 9 Finally, layer chips on top and bake in the oven for 40 minutes.
