Alex and Tally chose their home city and the ceremony took place in a Knightsbridge church. Guests were then transported by red London double-deckers to the bride’s family home for a reception in the garden. This had been transformed into a floral paradise, with project design, production and music by the talented team at Marble Events. marbleprivate.com & divinedayphotography.com 3 S A R A H & C AT H E R I N E Photo: By Lumiere

For Catherine and Sarah, it had to be London and their intimate winter wedding took in favourite spots around the city. Their great luxury was a suite at Shangri La Hotel at The Shard for canapés and bubbly with their guests, after which they married at Mayfair Library. En route to dinner in a favourite restaurant, photographers By Lumiere took beautiful shots against the backdrop of iconic landmarks. bylumiere.co.uk 4 V E L DA & K E N Photo: By Lumiere 2

Couture magic The designer behind The Couture Gallery is passionate about creating one-of-a-kind fantasy dresses, but says her style is also perfectly tailored to the sophisticated contemporary bride Wo r d s L I B B Y N O R M A N

B

ritta Kjerkegaard is renowned for creating the kind of gowns that guarantee a bride will be the star of the show, and with a level of couture craftsmanship that most of us will only experience once in our lifetime. And that’s what got her into designing bridalwear. She says: “For many women, this is the one opportunity to have exactly what they want – to have their dream come true – and this is why I love making big dresses”. Britta’s fashion background has deep roots. She knew from a very early age she wanted to be a designer and early practical training in her native Denmark taught her the key sewing and patterncutting skills. This was just the start of a career built on internships and working her way up at the haute couture end of fashion. She spent time at an avant-garde fashion house in Milan. She had spells at two great British names, milliner Philip Treacy and fashion designer Antony Price (the man behind Roxy Music’s hyper-glamorous image). She says Price, in particular, taught her a lot, but every spell

20

with a working designer gave her the business grounding in couture. “It’s very different from what you learn at fashion school, where you have time and mood boards – in a fashion house you are hands on and it’s all about what the client wants.” It was while working for renowned Danish designer Ann Wiberg, both in Copenhagen and at her Notting Hill atelier, that Britta first designed bridal. “I started out making a few evening pieces for friends and family. Then the sister of a friend asked me to make her wedding dress. At first I wasn’t sure, but it turned out well. It felt really special and I decided then that this could be my kind of thing.” This was around 2007 and was, says Britta, a very traditional time in bridal. “Dresses were very heavy, very full, and I decided I could create the full look with a modern twist – less fabric, lighter to wear.” From the start, The Couture Gallery was also playing with conventions when it came to bridal whites. “We showcased gowns of different colours – that is very common now but no one was doing it back then.” One constant was the dramatic and fantasy element of her gowns – the collection names speak volumes, as does the way Britta styles them. These are not dresses for bridal wallflowers but sassy women who still love the idea of dressing up to mark a very special

event. “It’s always about how you style them,” says Britta. “It takes confidence to wear a big dress on your wedding day.” Her brides have confidence, although every single one is different. One of her favourite recollections is of a cool and very beautiful client who came in to see her on the advice of a friend (nearly all Britta’s clients come via word-of-mouth). She looked at the racks of gowns and said these weren’t really her style at all – she was dressed edgily, she had tattoos. Then, as she was there, she said she would try one on, just for fun. “It was the biggest dress in the whole store and she was standing there transformed – she looked amazing.” She walked down the aisle some months later in the biggest dress from The Couture Gallery. All Britta’s gowns are couture, so brides are creatively involved. Typically, there are 40-50 gowns in her Kensington boutique

at any time, so the first appointment is a chance to see and try on, also discuss likes and dislikes. Britta always encourages brides to go away and think, and see other designers, before deciding to take things further. If it’s a yes, Britta will create three or four sketches and then work with the bride to narrow down to the final design. Then there is the full couture process, with a calico fitting and between two and four silk fittings. Ideally, says Britta, brides should allow between nine and 12 months. “This is so that they really enjoy the process and nothing is rushed, but if a bride has less time I will try and work with what we have.” While big gowns are Britta’s passion, she has branched out into more streamlined styles with her Modern Bride collection. The gowns and separates are contemporary and with an eveningwear look, designed as a response to the changing nature of weddings and what brides want. Many of Britta’s brides are having two celebrations – perhaps a ceremony here and a celebration abroad, or they want to just wear one dress and their style is more understated. “There used to be more pressure – friends, family, tradition – it was almost claustrophobic. Now there is a lot more freedom for brides to choose for themselves, which is a good thing.” Britta loves the fact that Modern Bride has attracted interest from different brides – the ones who don’t see

themselves in a fantasy full gown, although 90 per cent of her clients do end up walking away in one of her amazing full creations. Of course, with the couture process there is endless scope to have big dress and more – some brides ask for a full style but also get her to design slimline skirt or jumpsuit under it so they can do a magical quick change to slinky look for the after-party. The next couture collection, launching next year, is in planning and Britta is excited. She hints at skirts bigger than ever, flashes of colour, sparkle, 3D floral lace and pearls. “The thing about what I do is that this is not just a dress, it is so much more – memories for a lifetime. My favourite thing of all is when a bride sends back pictures from her wedding, wearing my dress and with hair and make-up just as she’d planned it. That is why I design bridal gowns.”

Absolutely Weddings PROMOTION

Wedding Belles Bentley Garment Care will ensure your bridal finery is cleaned, restored and preserved. Absolutely Weddings speaks to Claire Bedworth to find out the method behind the magic

Often you may think that you have totally ruined your dress, especially as it is white or pale neutral, however we are able to treat most staining and damage to restore your dress for you. Q What are the most common kinds of damage? A Food, wine, make-up and general ground-in dirt and mud are the most common stains that we treat and, in terms of damage, heel holes and torn lace are very common.

A

wedding dress is probably one of the most expensive purchases a bride will make, and more than that, it holds great sentimental value. For these reasons, it is imperative to see a specialist wedding dress cleaner for dress repairs, to avoid further damage to the garment and to ensure it is perfectly preserved. Bentley Garment Care is a thirdgeneration family-owned business with many years' experience in the care of wedding dresses. The team are able to clean all wedding dresses, whether they are made of delicate lace, silk, organza, or embellished with beading and diamanté. They can even clean dresses labelled ‘do not dry clean’. Once cleaned and restored to the best possible standard the wedding dress is then packaged into your choice of personalised storage box and wrapped in acid-free tissue to avoid ageing and fading.

Q How can a bride prevent her dress from getting damaged? A I don’t think there is much you can do, as it is most often a guest or family member getting enthusiastic on the dance floor or spilling something on you. Just have fun and enjoy wearing your beautiful dress and leave the worrying to us after your special day.

Absolutely Weddings speaks to Bentley Garment Care to understand the method behind their magic and what a bride should do in the face of wedding-day disaster. Q

What should a bride do if her dress gets damaged? A Ideally nothing. We know it is tempting to make an 'improvement' on the day, but it does usually make it harder for us to remove or repair after the wedding. Q What can Bentley Garment care do if a bride finds she has damaged her wedding dress? A We professionally clean and repair your dress for you – we hand treat each stain separately gaining the best results possible.

Q Can you even get stains such as red wine out of garments? A Yes, we can remove the majority of staining as long as we know what the stain is and it hasn’t been previously treated. We cannot guarantee with every dress that we will remove all staining as some fabrics are very delicate and we will not risk any damage to the dress. This is where our experience helps us achieve the best results possible.

ust as brides have more options than ever for wedding-day dressing, so too do grooms. Your choice of location plays its part in outfitting decisions, but also your personal style and what makes you feel comfortable. No rules is the new rule. That said, we think grooms should be ready to invest in whatever makes them feel special – so splurge on that new suit, or a crisp bespoke shirt. Here are some of our favourite ideas for sartorial style on the day.

o you have to wear a formal shirt and tie at your wedding? We think there are some great options for the more laidback look from Turnbull & Asser. Its new linen collection is smart and a cool choice for warm-weather weddings. If you are more of a retro romantic, check out its new silk collection, inspired by its 1960s and ‘70s heyday when rock royalty (including Mick Jagger) would beat a path to its Jermyn Street store to up their stage presence with dandy style. These are truly glamorous shirts – a tie is optional – and you can also have them bespoke or made-tomeasure if you wish.

hile we would all like a makeup artist on our wedding day (or even every day), sometimes it just isn’t possible to have a professional on hand. Whether you are a close family member at a wedding, a bridesmaid or a bride jetting off to the sun for a romantic celebration, choosing to do your own make-up can be a daunting task knowing it has to stand up to the glare of cameras and video. Achieving a flawless look that will last is the challenge, so here are tips to tick all the right boxes: long lasting, natural and timeless.

P R E PA R E YO U R S K I N Focus on skincare first. If you have dry skin, ensure you prep it accordingly as this will create the perfect canvas for the make-up products that follow. Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Radiance is a gorgeous product to prime your skin and a personal favourite. If your skin is combination/oily, the moisturiser/primer should have the term ‘mattifying’ in its description – I find Bioderma Sébium Mat Control primer to be a great product. Foundation is a fascinating topic in itself. With so many choices, what texture should you trust? My advice is to opt for a satiny/matte finish as this tends to set better on the skin and endure heat and humidity. Three that I trust are Illamasqua Skin Base, IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Oil-Free Matte and Rimmel Lasting Finish Foundation. While you might normally look for sun protection, especially on a

Your eyelids will need your support on such a long day, so spoil them by using a lovely eye primer (have you tried Eyeshadow Primer Potion by Urban Decay yet?). An alternative is to do this the old-school way by adding concealer on the lids and setting it with translucent powder. Only then start applying your eyeshadow. For lips, the most comfortable thing to wear is a tinted glossy texture, but if you want the colour to actually stay on your lips I have two precious tips. One way to get lasting power is to contour and pencil in your lips with a lip liner. That way you have a proper base for the lipstick to hang on to. Do feel free to add a bit of lip balm before the lip liner to make sure your lips are not over dry. The second tip is to save time reapplying throughout the day by opting for a lipstick that has a longwearing texture. This can then compensate for the lack of lip liner and give you the definition you need.

Among my favourite long-lasting lipsticks are Sleek Matte Me, Stila Stay All Day and Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour by Rimmel.

summer’s day, do be aware that if you use a super high SPF foundation on your skin you will risk a flashback from the camera – that's not a great look in photos.

To finish things off, you want to add some colour with blusher or bronzer. Here, my tip is to layer creamy textures with powdery ones for a natural glow with extra longevity. So if you normally use a creamy blusher/bronzer, to make it stay a lot longer on your skin, just dab on a little powder blusher/bronzer. Do make sure the amounts you use on the brush are tiny because if you combine cream and powder you increase the intensity – a little goes a long way. Once you have all your make up in place and are happy that the look is spot on, you want to set it. I love the popular All Nighter Setting Spray by Urban Decay, and it really does ensure your make-up will see you through. A good tip here is to spray it all over your face, eyes included (make sure eyes are shut). That way it will add an extra protective layer to your mascara so you can rest assured you won’t get those dreaded panda eyes. A greatvalue drugstore alternative is NYX Professional Setting Spray Matte. And there you have it, guaranteed camera-ready perfect make up to take you through a wonderful wedding celebration. * Viorela Coman is a freelance makeup artist who has worked with names such as Burberry, Chanel and Heidi Klein. SKIN BOOST Brides are boosting their confidence with non-invasive makeovers. Absolutely Weddings speaks to Coco Nail Bar to find out more muscle tone. While it can be used across the body, it’s also brilliant for face, neck and hands. “The sensation is that the skin is being heated – it feels warm and pleasant,” says Mari. “What the LipoFirm does is to make the collagen fibres in the skin contract and help cell renewal for improved skin texture.”

ountless sessions down the gym can work on our bodies, but when it comes to jaw, frown lines and the delicate skin on our neck, décolletage and hands, the assumption is that we must let nature take its course. But at Coco Nail Bar, CACI and LipoTherm non-surgical treatments provide a confidence-boosting fix. Salon manager and CACI and LipoTherm professional specialist Mari Albuquerque says both treatments are popular with brides, mothers of the bride/groom and wedding guests.

H I G H -T E C H TO N I N G

C

ACI (pronounced KC) uses microcurrent technology to improve muscle tone, but can be used to condition skin too, says Mari. “We boost skin hydration, using it in combination with creams and toners or with a hydro mask.” An intensive moisture boost can be of huge benefit – especially since skin becomes dryer as we age and as a result of extremes of weather. “The treatment helps with recent ageing spots and other signs of sun damage,” adds Mari.

W Coco Nail Bar has treatments to manage specific areas – from the Eye Revive to reduce puffiness, dark circles and target wrinkles to the Blemish Fix that uses LED light therapy and exfoliation. Mari says the 30-minute Jowl Lift is among the most requested treatments – targeting the jawline to lift and firm facial contours and boost skin appearance. “You’ll see a difference after the first session as the skin feels lifted, but we generally recommend at least ten sessions.”

R A D I O WAV E S

L

ipoTherm is the other redcarpet goers’ secret weapon. Like CACI, it is non-invasive and painless, using radio frequency technology. It is hugely popular with celebrities for sculpting the body, improving skin texture (especially good for cellulite) and

hile both treatments are popular individually, Mari says they often combine them for even better results. For instance, CACI is excellent for the jawline, while LipoFirm can work on the delicate skin of the neck and décolletage, reducing fine lines and plumping areas susceptible to sun damage and other signs of wear and tear. One of the chief selling points for many brides will be that these are fast treatments. Just 30 minutes on jawline and 15 minutes for neck can feel transformative and a real confidence boost, although the salon always recommends designing a programme of treatments for the best and most longlasting results. Hands, which are often neglected in our beauty regime, can get a boost from these treatments. The combination of CACI and LipoFirm works to reduce effects of sun damage, minimise wrinkles and plump the delicate skin on the backs of hands. In other words, this is great preparation for that obligatory ring-on-hand shot in the wedding photo-album. COCO NAIL BAR is at 267 Portobello Road, Notting Hill and offers CACI and LipoTherm, alongside a full range of beauty treatments. coconail bar.com ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

Q We care about sustainability and want things on our gift list that we love and will use. Can you advise? A Couples should choose gifts that reflect who they are. If sustainability is your priority, there are plenty of options to choose from. In fact, in response to the ever-increasing sustainability concerns of couples, we have introduced a range inspired by all things eco and featuring 15 brands and over 700 sustainable, eco-friendly and stylish products. It includes plastic-free coffee cups, gorgeous textiles made from recycled plastic bottles and striking artworks on recycled card. There are also more expensive items (perfect for our Group Gifting scheme), such as House of Marley’s turntables and speaker systems made from materials including bamboo, recycled bio-plastic and aluminium. They tick all boxes! Worth noting that we also wrap gifts in recyclable packaging. Couples today are also looking for experiential options and that – coupled with the fact that we are all more conscious about what we spend our money on – is the reason we launched Social Gifting. ‘Social Promises’ from guests can be anything close to your heart, whether that’s volunteering at a chosen charity, participating in community projects or cooking you dinner.

Q We want a tented wedding but are planning a winter celebration. Is there a way to combine the two? A A winter wedding in a tent or marquee is a fabulous option, but there are considerations. Most importantly, you need proper flooring and decent heating. In your budget, you must allow for the heating to run continuously throughout the day,

evening and into the early hours to avoid condensation, which can cause damage. When it comes to flooring, it’s best to go for a wooden floor. If it does snow, there will have to be an arrangement to clear settled snow off the top of the tent. The most critical thing is to ensure you have a good, strong, tent structure, so choose your supplier wisely. Practicalities aside, the season offers fantastic opportunities for decoration. You can create wonderful frosted settings using all the bare branches in the countryside. Asparagus fern looks superb when it’s glittered and there are unlimited possibilities using candles and low lighting. We often use battery table lamps to create a soft glow on tables. Long tables work well in this type of setting, covered with tactile or edgy tablecloths – I love using wallpaper to create unusual looks. Consider using sheepskin rugs, which turn even the most mundane chair into a warm and comforting seat.

Q We are uncertain about supplier pricing, why we pay certain costs and how to know what to expect? A It can be difficult for couples to know exactly what they are paying for, so here are a few key examples of different elements and what you are paying for. With wedding planners, you are not paying for time as much as their experience, knowledge, and logistical knowhow. Caterers are another extremely important decision. As well as preparing delicious food, their fee usually includes extras like staff, table linen, equipment, and so on. One pricing structure that often confuses couples is photographers. The time they spend photographing your day is one element. An equally vital part is photo editing, which may take days. You are paying for professional skill, time and the tools required for what they do. With all potential suppliers, do ask questions. Request a contract and make sure you read it. In particular, check payment and cancellation terms. Ensure you have in writing exactly what they will deliver to avoid any confusion. Openness and clarity ensure happy outcomes.

Russell Blackburn Having amassed a wealth of experience as a bridal magazine fashion director, Russell Blackburn founded Blackburn Bridal Couture 15 years ago, offering directional wedding-day dressing

I

had spent ten years as a fashion director when I made the decision, back in 2004, that I could bring something different to the market. I had lots of contacts and knew I could introduce a contemporary, directional edge that wasn’t available at that time. The market has changed hugely – brides are faced with almost too much choice – but Blackburn Bridal stays true to its directional approach, with exclusive and original pieces that are not widely available. Brides fly in from places like Dubai and Switzerland to see us. Our labels include Australian designer Anna Campbell, as well as talents such as Anna Kara and Rish. My label Blackburn Couture follows this directional idea – the Timeless 2020 collection is inspired by starlets from bygone eras and the ethos of timeless and elegant beauty.

I always advise brides to research what they like before they start shopping. Shortlist designers and try on a few gowns to narrow down. Do keep an open mind as you may find the dress you love on social media just doesn’t suit you. And never take too many people with you – two or three people you trust, more just gets confusing. When brides come to see us they can choose from a onehour session with one of our stylists or a VIP session with me. We keep things relaxed, starting with a chat to get an idea of their personal style, wedding style and their likes and dislikes. I invariably know what will suit a bride, but it’s about understanding what she wants to wear – whatever she chooses has to feel super special. Most importantly, she needs to feel like her – the right wedding dress is always an expression of the bride’s personality.

Blackburn Bridal Couture is at Tranquil Vale, Blackheath, SE3. For appointments, visit blackburnbridal.co.uk

WEDDING HACKS The experts at Marble Events’ wedding planning team reveal some of their favourite hacks to keep things on track and make your day feel truly special

W

ith so many brilliant ways to spend your wedding budget, knowing when to pause and maybe rethink the plan and then do things your own way can be tough. We have helped many couples plan and host their perfect party – here are four favourite hacks for staying on track.

O

ne of the main things planners have to do is manage and control each client’s budget – and the brilliant thing is that working the budget harder makes the day more creative and unique. So, decide on areas that aren’t key and instead make them intimately personal by doing them yourselves or asking a friend/family member to help out. Take on the stationery design and print at your local printers or hand the task on to one of your artsy friends. Challenge a family member or friend to make a simple wedding cake. We’ve had couples use buskers as reception entertainment and get friends to sing during the signing of the register. The talent’s out there, you just need to ask.

e realistic in what you want to spend and understand that you may have to forego some items from your wishlist. First things first, you know you’ll need a venue, some food and some booze, but are you happy to go for a rustic finish rather than a lavish one if it means booking that band you’re desperate for? Pinpoint your priorities and accept that this might change up the format of the wedding. We worked with one couple whose priorities were flowers and music. This meant they chose a burger van to cater the wedding at a greatly reduced cost (only one course), producing a very relaxed and playful atmosphere – the personalised bibs were a fantastic napkin alternative too!

on’t fancy implementing a receiving line but want to see all your guests? We see couples wrestle with old traditions and contemporary informalities in order to find the right balance for them. If you love the traditions, definitely stick with them, but we would suggest keeping them slick and snappy. Brief your

photographer thoroughly to make sure those group shots are quick and painless. Keep the MC but lose the formalities. Ensure this person is up to speed with the day, is bossy enough to get guests moving (in particular to their dinner seats) but keep them laughing when disturbed by announcements. We’ve seen fun and fast group-photo ideas, speeches during the reception and couples take their first dance before dinner, thereby sticking with the traditions but making them work to a new schedule.

t’s quite likely the environment is your jam (as it is ours). We’re seeing a big trend towards environmentally thoughtful weddings. One area is flowers. Couples are increasingly choosing seasonal and local over out-of-season imported or large-scale farmed. Florists are creating their own smaller florist farms where they grow and pick the majority of flowers they work with. Using potted blooms also works – giving you the opportunity to plant some of the flowers from your special day. Lovely decorative objects, the scented paper flowers are made of artisanal handmade paper from India. In keeping with Ananya’s philosophy of supporting crafts, this is printed by hand using hand-carved wooden blocks to create the lovely gold patterns on the flowers. f you’re planning a pre-wedding trip, New York is the perfect spot – the big problem when you’re limited on time is what to see and do. recent survey by Yorkshire-based Insurance Emporium found a surprising number of pets at weddings – over 40 per cent of those surveyed had seen a dog at a wedding they'd attended. More surprising still were some of the other animals spotted – cats by 23 per cent of respondents, closely followed by pigs and then horses. We’re even less certain about the logistics of snakes and chickens as guests (16 per cent respectively). Pet guests don’t come cheap, since the survey found an average of £276 was spent by couples on their animal’s wedding outfit, food, accommodation and travel. If you’re inviting your pet to your wedding, it goes without saying you’ll want to check with the venue that they don’t mind. And be very clear, your beloved pet is going to upstage you in the wedding photos. ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

LEED S CASTLE Exclusively yours Only an hour’s drive from London, Leeds Castle in Kent is an idyllic countryside setting for the most romantic weddings – making it the perfect location for your celebration, whatever the season.

I

n its 900-year history, Leeds Castle has been a Norman stronghold, the private property of six medieval queens and even a palace owned by Henry VIII. In the early 20th century, it served as an elegant retreat for the rich and famous when Lady Baillie, the last private owner, entertained high-society guests down from London. Today, couples can take over the entire Castle Island and all its luxurious bedrooms, with flexible use of the Castle, Maiden’s Tower and walled garden, as well as the croquet lawn in front of the Castle. Say ‘I Do’ in the beautiful Ceremony Room adjoining the Library before enjoying a wedding breakfast in the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall, with its breathtaking views across the moat. Leeds Castle offers further stunning venues in which to hold your ceremony and celebrations, including Battel Hall – a beautiful 14th-century manor house on the edge of the estate. Couples can marry in the oak-panelled ceremony room before moving on to the welcoming drawing room and De Gournay morning room. Alternatively, they may choose to exchange vows under the romantic Old English Bower and celebrate with up to 100

guests on the Marquee Terrace beside wisteria vines. Battel Hall boasts five individually decorated en-suite bedrooms and wedding packages include a three-night stay for up to 14 people, Friday to Monday. Other Estate venues include the Fairfax Barn, overlooking the Castle moat and suitable for bigger parties of up to 200 guests, as well as the intimate Maiden’s Tower, a 16th-century treasure offering its own private garden. Discover first-hand everything enchanting Leeds Castle has to offer at the next Wedding Showcase, taking place on Saturday 12th and Saturday 13th October 2019. e’ve been shopping for the perfect bolthole on Tuscany Now & More’s website and just know when we find ‘the one’. Villa Cignano ticks all our boxes. It is the place with views to die for, a gorgeous infinity pool at the end of the garden, a choice of barbecues (my companion’s clincher) and space to spread out and live the rustic Tuscan dream, even if it’s only for one short week. The pictures don’t lie – if anything they undersell – even though we arrive later than scheduled during an unseasonal May rainstorm. Stepping through the door we are greeted by a mellow living space. Stone floors and comfortable furnishings are the first impression. There’s a huge table, cosy sofa and chairs with bright cushions and a useful stack of local guidebooks on the antique dresser. Having forgotten to pre-order our shopping supplies and missed the supermarket after our flight delay, we are delighted to find not only breakfast supplies, but also a homemade pasta bake ready to warm in the oven, and

106

with plenty of local crusty bread and a bottle of wine. As we feast at our huge table on this most delicious supper, we can’t get over how thoughtful our hosts Gianni and Rossana have been – its the first of many wonderfully hospitable touches during our stay. Waking early the next morning, nothing quite prepares us for the view. The villa sits at the top of a hill in one of the most unspoilt and rural parts of Chianti. From the shaded terrace outside the house we look out over a vista dotted with olive groves. Stone houses are tucked away in neighbouring hills and through the trees to the right of the house we can even glimpse the outskirts of Siena, some ten miles away. Breakfast outside is a lazy start of strong coffee and the remains of that lovely loaf. Fortified, we set out to explore our manor. We have a choice of places to lounge – there’s a loggia by the infinity pool and a third lounging area offering views to the vineyard next door. The villa has been lovingly restored, maintaining authentic thick stone walls and traditional shuttered windows, cool in the day and cosy at night. We love the well-equipped kitchen and homely touches. The one golden rule here is to always shut the gates at the top

of the drive – while nature is most welcome, wild boar are not. The boar’s head high on the wall of the living room is a daily reminder that these beasties have very large tusks that can ruin a garden in no time at all. While we never do encounter one (although I’m keen to, from a distance), there’s plenty of lovely wildlife here. I am entranced by the cuckoo who sits in the same tree outside the villa every morning – I can’t think of the last time I heard one and this fellow is in full voice. I also love the little lizards that sunbathe on the old stone walls and dart into the bushes when you pass by. Days are spent mostly doing very little. We’ve stocked up on supplies from the picturesque local village Vagliagli as well as making a foray to a well-stocked supermarket on the outskirts of Siena. I enjoy throwing together simple salads from divine local produce while my companion flexes his barbecue muscles. Gianni and Rossana are on hand with advice on everything from the best local butcher to the finest wineries. They tell us we are welcome to pick the rosemary and fennel that scent the garden for our barbecues. Sightseeing is a leisurely affair. We head off in our rental car with no particular plan or schedule – part of the fun is getting a little lost and this is the place to do it as it’s jam-packed with beautiful surprises. Siena is a gorgeous spot, while Castellina in Chianti offers delightful shops and mighty fortifications as well as lots

“From our shaded terrace we look out over a vista dotted with olive groves and vineyards, and with distant views towards beautiful Siena” of small cafés to enjoy a leisurely coffee. Tuscany Now & More helpfully supplied a guide to 43 towns and villages we really should see, but the peace of our terrace is way too alluring. We’ll have to tick more of them off the list on future visits – as anyone who has explored this part of the world knows, a visit just makes you plan a return. On one evening, an in-villa chef cooks us a fantastic meal of panzanella salad, Pici all'aglione (tomato and garlic sauce with hand-rolled pici pasta from Siena), perfect fried chicken with courgette pies and exquisite homemade ice cream. Like all the meals in this part of the world, exceptional ingredients beautifully prepared. Another highlight is our wine tasting, an opportunity to work our way through treasures from regional wineries. Our Master of Wine Valentina Mazzetti is a brilliant communicator and teaches us more in three hours than I thought possible. We spend the rest of the holiday practising what we’ve learned – assessing the ‘legs’ of wine is a most pleasant way to spend an evening on a balmy terrace looking out over the ancient hills of Chianti. We are so attuned to Tuscan living by the end of our week that we really don’t want to return to normality, so our final day is spent plotting when we might return to Villa Cignano. We decide that it has to be one of the most peaceful and dreamily romantic spots for down time. Living the Tuscan life for a week in our own private villa is a proper holiday – simple food, local wine and the pleasure that comes from being together and doing nothing much at all.

T U S CA N Y N OW & M O R E offers Villa Cignano from £1,401 for seven days (maximum capacity six) – one of its choice collection of unique properties in Italy. It can also provide services such as private chefs, wine tastings and excursions. t u scanynowandmore.com

Luxury Travel JAMAICA

J Jamaica Inn sits on its own perfect stretch of beach near Ocho Rios and is a rich mix of old-style island traditions and modern luxuries – as seductive a combination as you could imagine for a chilled holiday in the Caribbean Wo r d s F LO R A T H O M A S

amaica Inn is old-school luxury, a place steeped in glamour and part of the heritage of the island it is named after. The roll call of stars who have stayed over is impressive – Winston Churchill smoked cigars on its terrace, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller were honeymooners here. More recently it has hosted Lilly Allen, Kate Winslet, Kate Moss, even Richard Branson – and he has his own private island in the Caribbean. It may have a starry reputation, but this is the most welcoming and relaxing of places. It has remained in the hands of the Morrow family since the start (1950) and many staff have been here for decades. The barman Teddy is a legend, having notched up almost 60 years. Now he has some stories, having shaken or stirred cocktails for the great and the good. Were James Bond real, this is the kind of barman he’d hang out with. In fact, Ian Fleming was a visitor here – there are sepia pictures of him on the walls – his Jamaican home Goldeneye is a short boat ride away. While it’s undeniably luxurious, the low-rise setting and the family feeling (there’s even a resident black lab called Shadow) are all conducive to perfect relaxation. The pristine crescent-shaped beach is the star, 700feet across and with calm and crystal-clear water that is perfect for snorkeling and watersports – and with complimentary beach activities including kayaking and paddle boarding. Or you can just tune in to the waves and stake your claim to one of the beach hammocks or loungers. They bring complimentary fruit punches out to the beach every morning (and serve a proper afternoon tea with sandwiches – also complimentary – every afternoon). If your muscles or your mind need some work, the spa is one of the most chilled spots imaginable – be pampered in a shady hut listening to the sound of the sea. Our room is old-school romantic – what you dream about when you think about the Caribbean – with crisp white bedlinen, wooden shutters and the ocean beyond. ABSOLUTELY-WEDDINGS.CO.UK

In fact, the mix of accommodation here is what really sets it apart, with a mix of suites, verandah rooms and hideaway bungalows and cottages ranged round the bay. Some are so private that they feel like the ultimate lovers’ retreat. While it’s easy to be lazy here – a good book and a glass of punch at your side – there is plenty to tempt you to explore the island, and the staff can manage just about any request, be it a visit to Ian Fleming’s house Firefly (reputed to offer some of the best views in all Jamaica) or a trip to Bob Marley’s birthplace, which happens to be in the same parish of St Ann as Jamaica Inn. More active guests also have plenty to occupy them. We take a bicycle tour through the Blue Mountains, home to the island’s world-famous coffee. Not as arduous as it sounds as most of the journey is downhill, with no pedaling required. The landscape is lush and green and the views are fantastic. We

take a boat ride to Dunn’s River Falls, with its magnificent terraced waterfalls and beautiful lagoons. It is the place Jamaicans and canny tourists head to if they want to cool down on a hot day. There's also a snorkeling trip in a private glassbottomed boat and we get up close to some of the beautiful marine life. Our most fascinating visit is to White River Fish Sanctuary, a cause that Jamaica Inn is closely involved with, raising funds and supporting its efforts to restore the coral reefs around Ocho Rios to their pristine best, nurture fish and other marine life and – via a warden scheme – educate people about the value of conserving this unique environment. While severe weather events, disease and lack of understanding of the way to maintain fish stocks have all taken a toll – as they have for all the world’s oceans and reefs – it is inspiring to see the passion of the team here and the practical on-theground work to husband this natural

paradise for future generations. No visit to Jamaica is complete without rum, and we enjoy a ‘rumology’ masterclass to teach us the fundamentals of the national drink – it is so much more than a cocktail ingredient and we develop a new respect for its complexity. Going behind the scenes for a private cookery class is another treat. We learn a few chef secrets and this only increases our awe of the excellent cooking here. Every dish is made to order and made with love – authentic slow food. Breakfasts are a leisurely affair, with Blue Mountain coffee and an abundance of fresh seasonal fruits, eggs, muffins and Jamaican specialities such as ackee and salt fish. Lunches can be taken on the beach, the restaurant or your own private verandah – we love that it’s so relaxed – and the choice of sandwiches, salads and local favourites (including curry goat and spicy jerk chicken) is mouthwatering. At dinner we eat the best seafood – the local shrimp is not to be missed – and the steaks come just as you like them. They even serve

complimentary hors d’oeuvres every evening to whet your appetite – there is just no excuse for going hungry at Jamaica Inn. Before our visit we had looked at one of the holiday review sites and saw how many people who married here or honeymooned here had just returned from their third, fourth, sixth visit and were already counting down the days until they could chill out on one of its beach hammocks or sun loungers, check in with the staff and be welcomed like old friends. A few days in, we get it. Jamaica Inn is your indulgence, your island time – who wouldn’t want to return?

Now Santikos Collections has opened its first city hotel, The Alex, in the port city of Piraeus on the Athens Riviera. It’s conveniently close to the capital – just 15 minutes’ drive – and makes a perfect retreat from city heat. Located on top of Kastella’s Hill, the 34-room hotel overlooks the small harbour of Microlimano,

lined with fishing boats, yachts and a host of bars. Its elegant rooftop restaurant and bar, The Nest, offers distant views of Athens’ treasures, including The Acropolis. Piraeus was once a favourite spot for Greek shipping tycoons, including Stavros Niarchos and Aristottle Onassis. It is said that it was Onassis’ dream to create an international business and tourism centre here – and his dream may yet come true. santikoscollection.com

hen you are a leading shoe designer with an international reputation for glamorous red-carpet and bridal heels, your wedding is bound to be something very special. But for Freya Rose and her partner Matt, their wedding was a golden opportunity to host a very special party for friends and family – including their two young children. They knew exactly where the ceremony should take place – St Hubert’s Church, Idsworth, a location rich in meaning for both of them. Freya says: “It’s the most extraordinary church and for years I used to see it from the train on the way to or from London and think that I’d love to get married there”. And on her second date with Matt, he told her he would like to marry here there! One of the oldest churches in the country and located

118

in rolling Hampshire countryside, St Hubert’s features incredible Roman murals on its walls. To top it all, one of Freya’s grandfathers was vicar there between 1950 and 1960 – it was meant to be. Freya says it was hugely important to both of them that their two children be an integral part of such a joyful day. Johnnie was enlisted as their pageboy and also drew the illustration for the order of service cover. Willow was their flowergirl and had a pair of baby shoes with silk flowers designed specially for her important role. For their reception, Matt and Freya chose Park House Hotel & Spa in the village of Bepton, in part because its tranquil grounds provide lots of space for adult guests to spread out and for all the children attending the wedding to play. The celebration was designed to make the most of a long summer’s day, with drinks and wedding breakfast followed by an alfresco evening party and dancing. For daytime, the design was elegant, with a modern English country style. White

and gold décor, accents and stationery (all designed by Freya) were expertly created by the team at Lo & Behold Bespoke. There were lots of other personal touches. Sprigs of Honesty picked from Freya’s grandmother’s garden were hand-painted in gold leaf and used for name placecards. A sprig of Honesty was also woven into Freya’s lovely up-do. Ethereal flowers for both the venue and bouquets were by Portsmouth-based Blossom Boutique – the beautiful bridal bouquet featured sweet peas and peonies and, says Freya, was a contemporary translation of her grandmother’s bridal bouquet. In keeping with the style of day and evening parties, Freya had two distinct looks. For daytime she had chosen a beautiful off-the-shoulder gown designed for her by Sanyukta Shrestha, the Fulhambased eco-designer who is also a personal friend. Hair and make-up was by Amanda Clarke, who translated her vision perfectly (and, says Freya, did a brilliant job of calming her wedding nerves). She wore jewellery designed by her mother, renowned bespoke jeweller Barbara Tipple. For evening, she wore an elegant champagne gown from Amanda Wakeley and a lovely golden headband from Lila. Matt went for classic British names for his wedding-day outfit, wearing Turnbull & Asser and Crocket & Jones. Freya’s four lovely bridesmaids were also wearing iconic British names – two in long gowns by Ghost and two in on-trend dungarees and lace blouses from Topshop. Each of the outfits was accessorised with Freya Rose shoes. And, of course, Freya wore some very special shoes on this momentous day. In fact, she designed three pairs. For the church, her namesake Freya shoe was designed with a platform base and made of a shimmer suede with silver leather lining and her signature mother-of-pearl heels in

a soft rose. The couple's initials were also monogrammed on the heel. Glory for the Party were designed as a modern take on platforms, featuring a block heel – so perfect for outdoor weddings and dancing. The final gorgeous pair, Rose in Bloom, featured taupe shimmer suede and with a golden leather lining. The weather was stunning on the day and was full of memorable moments. As they left their home, Freya’s son Johnnie told her she looked like a goddess and it was the best day of his life. Freya’s brother Joseph walked her up the aisle accompanied by the children and bridesmaids, her father having sadly passed away last year. Afterwards, guests dined and relaxed on the terrace of Park House Hotel while younger guests played on the lawns. As the sun set, they moved on for the woodland part of the party, with live music, gorgeous Mediterranean food and marshmallows for toasting on the firepit – a truly magical finale to a wonderful celebration.

Heather and Yann hosted a glorious summer party at their Ibiza second home, bringing together friends and family for a glamorous but relaxed Mediterranean wedding capturing the spirit and energy of the island they love P h o t o g r a p h y TA R A M O L L E R

hen Heather and Yann began planning their wedding, it was clear that they needed to choose middle ground because she’s from London and he’s from New York and with a guest list spread across the globe. Heather says: “Friends and family were going to have to travel, no matter what, so we decided to ask everyone to Ibiza. We chose to have our ceremony at home there at our house, which we finished building in early 2018. So, it was a wedding and a housewarming – a double celebration”. This set the tone for a relaxed ‘coming together’ party. Heather and Yann have a long association with the Spanish island. “Ibiza has been a very special place for us all, firstly for a number of years for my family and then my husband and I spent 122

a lot of time there when we first met, and have done so ever since,” says Heather. The design for the day was traditional but relaxed, with a dress code for women of glamorous dresses and trainers (essential for dancing and to navigate the terrain). Men were asked to wear cool linen. Their families were core to the ceremony. “Our four adult children brought along the rings and joined together with speeches, and my two daughters walked me down the aisle.” When it came to what she should wear, Heather says it was tough. “Getting married in your 50s is brilliant and challenging in equal measure. The challenging part was finding a dress, which took several attempts, a lot of reality checks and, eventually, an inspired intervention from my daughter.” The inspired intervention came with a trip to see designer Charlie Brear. The lovely kimono-style dress Heather found was perfect for a warm-weather wedding.

Somewhere during the journey to the wedding day Heather says she just stopped worrying about perfection. “A random outbreak of brown patches on the lawn prompted me to entirely jettison any notions of perfection and go instead for full blown happiness and gratitude for what was happening around me. It made me relax and just enjoy being present with my incredible husband and having an additional household of our nine favourite people – our children and their partners – and then having 60 more friends and family arriving on the island.” Relaxing is one of Heather’s key survival tips for couples, but so too is assembling the right team. Their wedding planner, Kerry Anne Winton of Ibiza Wedding was, she says, a total rock, great company and a brilliant organiser – also on hand into the small hours ironing out those tiny hitches that happen at all the very best parties. “Candles blowing out just before dinner, guests getting in the wrong taxis at 5.30am, etc. Flawless!”

Photogapher Tara Moller captured the day in a way that reflected the relaxed fun they were having and became: “a much-loved friend and guest”. In fact, from Anai's hair and make-up to Clem at Velvet Circus, who styled and decorated, this was a team that made their day flow. Heather says the bar was superb and Pedro, who did their lighting, blew everyone away with his transformation of their courtyard using lasers and projectors. She also gives special mention to DJ Luka. “If anyone can really nail wedding music, which means simultaneously pleasing a huge cross section of ages and cultures, then they have probably answered the question to life, the universe and everything. Luca did a brilliant job and guests reported aching limbs for days after all the dancing.” This was a party of so many high points that it’s hard to choose one, but Heather singles out the marriage ceremony. “Being walked down the aisle by my two daughters and seeing my wonderful husband waiting for me was really like a magical dream. We chose ‘At Last’ by Etta James for me to walk in to. As the music started everyone just cheered and broke into applause. I knew then we were in for a special time, and it certainly was! I think everyone was crying and laughing at the same time for much of it.” As to their choice of Ibiza – their second home – Heather and Yann believe this was the perfect place. “The island has a particular energy which lends itself to celebration and also to love and a sense of safety and I think that everyone who came to the wedding responded to that,” says Heather.

Cornish CREAM Esme and Nathaniel chose the perfect Cornish country-house setting near Newquay to host their magical alfresco end-of-summer wedding party for family and friends Photography ENCHANTED BRIDES PHOTOGRAPHY

F

or Esme and Nathaniel, the perfect location for their mid September wedding celebration had to be Cornwall. They had been on their first holiday in the county together some eleven years earlier and then visited several times since. “Cornwall is a very special place for us,” says Esme. The other big considerations were privacy and space to party alfresco. “We love being outdoors and there was no question that we wanted our ceremony to be outside, somewhere completely private.” The final decider was accommodation – the couple wanted to be able to host friends and family for several days without travelling between venues. While some couples search for ages to find the perfect spot, Esme and Nathaniel were lucky enough to find Tresillian House, close to Newquay on the north coast, quickly. “It was only the second venue we viewed but we immediately knew it was perfect for us,” says Esme. The lovely Regency country house sits in 22 acres of beautiful grounds, with space to host a large

126

party and accommodation and party spaces spread across several buildings. With venue in place, the rest of the planning came together. When it came to themes, they wanted the look to be sympathetic to this mellow setting. “We tried to keep things pretty simple as the house, gardens and Sperry Tent were beautiful and didn’t need too much dressing up.” Esme also wanted muted colours that complemented her wedding dress – she had chosen the stunning soft pink Petal silk gown from modern-vintage bridal designers Belle & Bunty. With its low back, soft cap sleeves and silk sash, it was the perfect look for a summer garden party. For flowers, she and Nathaniel opted for lots of foliage and with beautiful dahlias to suit the late summer timing. The flowers were by Three Acre, a Cornish company that grows most of its own plants and flowers. “Beautiful blooms and gorgeous girls,” says Esme. Another seasonal touch were hop garlands used to dress the spaces, supplied by Hukins Hops near Tenterden and a nod to Esme’s Kentish roots. With such a stunning backdrop, the only

other important element was the weather – and it was a beautiful day. Guests gathered in the Sperry Tent (she and Nathaniel were incredibly impressed by the professionalism of both service and tent set up). This lightfilled space overlooking the formal gardens provided a major high-point of the day. “The ceremony was mind-blowingly perfect and emotional,” says Esme. Their close friend Adam acted as celebrant as the couple had “done the legal bit” in London the week before. She adds: “Adam curated the most personal and meaningful ceremony. Walking down the aisle with my Dad to Neil Young ‘Harvest Moon’ and seeing my husband to be and all of my friends and family was just so special”. The second high-point for the couple was the speeches – five in all – delivered by groom, father of the bride, Esme’s sister (her best woman) and the two best men during the wedding dinner. “Each one was perfectly pitched and people said they were the best wedding speeches they had heard.” With the day managed by Chef in my Home, the couple could relax and enjoy the party. Esme says: “Dean and Victoria from Chef in my Home were instrumental in planning the day and ensured it went perfectly from beginning to end. They even provided a full clear up service and catering for a BBQ and then dinner the following day”. The third high point was walking back into the Sperry Tent after dinner to find a magical party setting. “It had been transformed from our flower-filled ceremony tent. We had reggae and ska pumping, an espresso martini and negroni bar and sparkling festoon lights. It was just such a magical way to kick off the party,” says Esme. The day was captured on film by Enchanted Brides Photography – Esme and Nathaniel say they barely knew photographer Jo was there. The space

“Walking down the aisle with my Dad and seeing my husband to be and all of my friends and family was just so special”

and luxury of being able to spread out in their Cornish hideaway contributed to the atmosphere. Their advice to other couples would be to relax so you are ready to enjoy every moment. “Get some time on the morning of the wedding to centre yourself, whether that’s going for a run, a swim, a soak in the bath or sitting quietly in the garden. One of our friends is a yoga teacher and led a class for those who wanted to join under the trees in dappled morning sunlight.” It was, says Esme, a perfect way to start a wonderful wedding day.

Real Weddings PERFECT DAY

Perfect Day

For many couples there’s a very special shot they want for the album, and in Abi and Tom’s case this required a tractor, teleporter, straw bales and an extremely game wedding party

ike cake, bubbly and confetti, group photographs are standard issue at weddings. You just have to have them. While they create lovely memories down the generations of who was who, usually they are somewhat lacking in excitement. But at the wedding of Abi and Tom, there was a plan – Tom’s – to do something rather special. With plenty of farmland and straw bales to execute his grand idea, and a wedding party who were more than ready to join in the fun, the end result is a fabulous photograph that sums up the day and is guaranteed to be a talking point down the generations. Photographer Ben Bull takes up the story.

Ben Bull: I think Tom may have seen a shot on social media that inspired him. He told me his plan and then we had to work out logistics. Most importantly, we needed the straw bales that were ready in his barn somewhere that would capture the evening sun. We also needed to site them well away from the wedding, just in case any guests decided to go for a climb. We agreed the site, he put the bales in the perfect spot and then, when the light was right, the wedding party got into place with the help of the tractor. Everyone was ready and willing, never mind the wedding finery, and the result is a classic for the album. I also managed to capture a few romantic pictures of Abi and Tom standing together on their straw bale installation just as the sun set.
