hen I was starting out on my journalistic journey, an early feature I was asked to do revolved around visiting Great Ormond Street Hospital. I was very much wet behind the ears back then, probably more interested in experiencing the nightlife of London that I was enjoying for the first time in my life, but that visit was one I have never forgotten. It's easy to be twee when writing about GOSH, writing about the children they are helping day to day, especially when this writer hasn't ever been in such a situation. And I have to admit I was a little speechless on that first visit. I couldn't quite comprehend the amazing work they do there, or the fact there were so many sick children who all smiled wide when I had a chance to speak to them. Every single person under that roof was utterly incredible. Which brings me to local Libby Cotts. On page 70 we feature her story, which began innocuously, but since last summer has seen her spend plenty of time in GOSH, yet she still finds the desire to fundraise for a great cause. It puts a little bit of lockdown into perspective.

ith the fantastic news that hospitality can finally open up fully, I have just the company to introduce you to and help you on your, hopefully, very merry way. Speaking to people every day within our community it is apparent we are all missing and craving the normality we had before this pandemic, which has touched all of us in one way or another. I hope August brings families and friends together. West Essex is renowned for its communities’ opulent taste and love for all things luxury, especially when it comes to being entertained. Local businesswoman Ann-Marie Hackett had long talked about creating a business that catered for the luxury market, finally realising it was time to make it a reality by bringing it to life in July 2020. She was soon joined by her business partner Trudie Yau – being great friends and work colleagues for over ten years – and both girls found themselves at the peaks of their respective careers before COVID struck. These two power houses joined forces and went to work building Hackett’s business that is today known as AMLuxe The Agency. This luxury concierge and lifestyle management company is the perfect solution to you having no time to twiddle your thumbs. It is a bit of a challenge after not venturing out as much as we may have before to get back into the vibe and AMLuxe are there to help. With contacts

and unique deals locally and around the globe, a night, a weekend, or extended celebration is no problem to this team. Offering a very bespoke premium service to their members and non-members alike, they deliver the exceptional and create memorable experiences. Working with bars and restaurants such as MKNY House, Amazonico and Madison’s, they can arrange tickets to that special sold out show and get you there in style too – and they can even arrange somewhere to rest your head. It is simple to get in touch with them online (amluxe.co.uk) and the girls are so helpful with the most infectious personalities. Expect the best kind of experience and make the most of hospitality opening up once again. CATC H H A I FA L I V E

O f f th e

C H A RTS In conversation with West Essex local Paul Hardcastle, discussing all things past, present and his plans for the future By ELLIE-MAE HAMMOND

S

ong-writer, composer, radio presenter, producer, musician and multiinstrumentalist… Paul Hardcastle’s CV just does not end. Best known for his song 19, which sky-rocketed to number one in the UK charts in 1985, Hardcastle has gone on to have quite the career. But who is the man behind the sound? “When I was younger, funnily enough I didn’t think about pursuing a career in music,” he admits when we meet up over Zoom. “All I could think about was motorbikes. My dad was a musician, and growing up I lived all over, following him and his music. He taught me how to play the drums from the age of seven, but my heart wasn’t in it to his dismay. I became a despatch rider when I left school – motorbikes were literally all my brain could focus on.

“However, all that changed when I had a bad accident and ended up smashing into the side of a moving car. I landed about 100 feet down the road, and before I knew it, I woke up in hospital with three compound fractures.” For anyone who has suffered a compound fracture, you will know the severity of his predicament. “I was in hospital for four months, in traction, and came out on my 21st birthday. I had a video camera at the time, and a friend of mine had a cheap monotonic synthesizer, so we swapped devices one day.” Sitting opposite Hardcastle, I can see the spark in his eyes light up. “With this monotonic synthesizer, you could only make one note. And from this moment, I became someone that would really look for ways of doing things differently.” Suddenly, his father's music bug started to bite him. “I started doing bits and pieces and tried making some tracks up, and one day I looked in ‘Melody Maker’ and someone

was looking for a keyboard player to join their band – bearing in mind I had only been playing for a few months, I turned up and got the job instantly. They told me I was exactly what they were looking for. “My time with Direct Drive was shortlived, and not long after myself and the singer left and became First Light. After a few years, we split, and I went straight on to do this track called Rainforest for a body popping video – it’s safe to say that my inspiration was the New York sound.” From this moment onwards, this is where everything really started slotting into place for Hardcastle. “All of a sudden, this track went to number one on the dance chart in America, almost instantly. The next day, I get a call from Simon Fuller, Madonna’s manager! He told me that I had knocked Like a Virgin off the top spot, and wanted to invite me in for a chat. I was working on 19 at the time, so I brought that in with me, and essentially left with a manager! Seven A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

weeks later we were number one in 13 countries, and sold seven million records.” Looking back at what shaped his music, Hardcastle recalls: “The song D-Train, this is exactly what shaped my sound. And when I look back, all I ever wanted was for people to love what I did.” Moving his career to America, Hardcastle wanted to leave pop behind and focus more on a new style of music: “I wanted to stray away from pop, more something you would listen to in a jazz bar. Ibiza chill mixed with jazz. I’ve had 34 number ones on the American charts, and after being in the goldfish bowl for four years, I realised I didn’t like pop anymore. I went back to similar sounds of my past, using saxophones and flutes to make new sounds. I went back to my roots and then came my first album, The Jazz Masters, and shortly after I produced Hardcastle One, a half vocal/half instrumental album. There was a gap in the market for such an album, so of course, I filled it!” Lockdown was a struggle for us all, but creatively, Hardcastle could not be put on pause. “I couldn’t actually go into the studio for a good couple of months – I just had no interest,” he says. “I ran a record label for four years, so I was constantly busy, and for that to be all of a sudden put on pause, it really affected me. One day I went into the studio to just do a drum

track. All of a sudden, my brain started again, like an engine starting back up – I came out at 5am with a track that some people have said is the best thing I’ve ever done. Covid made me fall in love with music again – I made two albums in lockdown. “Lockdown gave me a lot of time to think about my next career moves and what I want to give back to my community,” he continues. “Me and a close friend are thinking about setting up a music academy. I am a song-writer, I’ve worked with Simon Fuller, ran my own record label – all this stuff is in my head and I don’t think there’s much I wouldn’t be able to tell you about this industry. What people need to understand coming into this academy is two things. The first, what do you want to be, and understand the path of growth within that area.” The idea for the academy is all very new, however his ambition is to have it up and running by the end of the year. He says: “We will be using the Colebrook Royals Football Hall, with the age demographic being around 15 years and above.” It’s safe to say Hardcastle is no stranger to the music industry, and with his wealth of knowledge and expertise, this academy in the making is sure to produce nothing but the finest musicians in the area. paulhardcastle.com

hile Central London has often taken centre stage when it comes to celebrities and nightclubs, one venue in Gants Hill has certainly done more than most to steal the limelight. If you were hearing or reading about a shindig in Essex, there’s a good chance that Faces would be where it was taking place. I have my own tabloid tale linked to the club. I was just at the right age for a beer or two when Euro 96 rolled into town (rather timely given our own recent travails at Euro 2020) and, like many England fans, was left rather underwhelmed when we drew our

“IT HAS BEEN MY TOUGHEST TIME IN THE INDUSTRY. IT HAS BEEN A COMPULSORY CLOSURE FOR 448 DAYS” opening game against Switzerland 1-1. Then came the news the next day. “One of the most famous stories was when three England players popped in for a beer on the way home from a game,” John Clark, the man who first brought us Faces and remains the owner today. “They were only here a short while, but the following day their visit made front page news for all the wrong reasons.” The footballers in question – Teddy Sheringham, Jamie Redknapp and Sol Campbell – weren’t exactly cast in the best light. Footballers, in particular, seem intertwined with the history of the club that has lasted nigh on three decades. “We operated as a membership club,” Clark looks back to what made Faces different back in the day. “We were also renowned for our celebrity following.” With the ever-popular red tops thriving on celebrity gossip, Faces became a magnet for paparazzi, which didn’t seem to put off starry names from stepping through their doors. It feels like times have changed, though, since those hedonistic days. Some of today’s stars are clean living and certainly not ones to fall out of a club and into a taxi. Footballers, too, aren’t exactly the play hard, party hard, types of yesteryear, especially with the onset of technology meaning a sly beer the night before will be picked up as soon as they step onto the training pitch the next morning. But rather than yearn for the drunken days of yore, Faces has evolved. “Cocktails had umbrellas and Budweiser was the trendy beer,” Clark laughs about what was different back in the early days. “People’s tastes change and we need to change with them, as well as expectations and the offering. We now have many more tables for evening VIP table service, have a Saturday afternoon brunch club, Sunday afternoon day parties and screen major sports events too.” In all, the club has

undergone a £1m facelift. “There has been a complete restyle,” Clark says on where the money went. “We have changed the reception and bars, there’s a new sound and light system, a glass frontage, and we have introduced online membership and a table booking system too.” Excitement was building online about the refurbishment and the re-opening back in early 2020 was truly being hyped up – and then along came a pandemic. “Nobody has seen the refurbishment since we closed on 2 February, 2020,” Clark laments. None of the press the club has received over the years – positive or not – could quite match a coronavirus that managed to shut down the whole world. “It has been my toughest time in the industry,” Clark says without hesitation. “It’s been a compulsory closure for 448 days. There’s a whole age group – the 18, 19, and 20-year-olds – that have never experienced a full-on nightclub [like ours].” A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“Faces has stood the test of time and we are now ready to serve the next generation” Is he bitter about a lack of governmental support during this time? “We are very grateful for all the assistance given,” he says diplomatically, before adding, “but I’m sorry to say that hospitality and nightclubs have not featured high on the priority list. We are by nature well regulated and have exceptionally good air conditioning [here].” It was an argument that fell on deaf ears ever since there were inklings of lockdown being eased. The pre-Christmas relaxing of rules involved pubs and restaurants, but not nightclubs, and at the time of writing 19 July – the so called ‘Freedom Day’ – will be the first possible opportunity to actually throw some shapes on a dancefloor indoors.

In the build up to this, Faces has been open for some – “We have held a few brunch-style afternoons around the rule of six,” Clark says – which has actually been the perfect appetizer for what’s to come. It’s very much still a nightclub, but there’s more to it than that: the food, for one, is not quite what I experienced back in my clubbing heyday. More table service means more groups can sit back and take everything in, with sharing platters sure to be a hit. And the drinks offering has come on since those Budweisers and cocktails with umbrellas – it’s more like theatre today when the mixologists serve up their masterpieces. Will Faces become a celebrity magnet once again? Time will tell, but Clark is certainly bullish about the future. “People need to be reassured it’s safe to go out,” he says. “But Faces has stood the test of time and we are now ready to serve the next generation.” FAC E S 458-462 Cranbrook Road, Gants Hill, IG2 6LE 020 3827 7839 • facesleisure.co.uk

t's almost time to start thinking about AW21 style, but before we do there is still plenty of beautiful summer styling in stores to grab whilst you can. New collections are still being launched each month and my choices for this edit hail from the July new arrivals. Finally we can think about dressing up and there are some fabulous options on the high street and online. 'Garden Party' themed collections have dominated SS21 with floral prints, ruffles and billowing, and tiered hemlines seen everywhere. One of my favourites is from River Island, who continue to impress me with sudden bursts of genius design. Their delicate yellow floral statement dress features a mini hemline at the front and a maxi hemline at the back, finished with a deep v neckline and angel wing sleeves. The design detailing on this is less high street and more couture. I love their campaign shot styling of this with trainers, but for those less eclectic, a pair of classic metallic heels will look equally fabulous. Weddings are starting to go ahead, but outfit choices for both the bride and guests has experienced a shift in how we shop. Recently Carrie Symonds married PM Boris Johnson in a gown she hired for the occasion and this is fast becoming the new trend. Hiring designer fashion is becoming a huge new industry: not only is it a way of wearing a super expensive dress for under £100, it’s also eco-friendly, helping to reduce landfill of unwanted clothes.

“If you want to make a real entrance, get hiring – nobody will ever know” There are more and more online treasure troves of dress hire stores. I've picked HURR as they stock cult label 'The Vampire's Wife' for hire, a label worn by Jennifer Aniston, Kate Middleton and pretty much all the sophisticated fashionistas globally. Founded by former Vivienne Westwood muse, Susie Cave, their dresses are whimsical and feminine and they retail from £1,500 upwards, but hiring starts from just £95 at HURR, so if you want to make a real entrance at a party this summer, get hiring – nobody will ever know. Accessorising this season need not be expensive. Designer handbags are great

if you have the cash to spare, but for those that don't, there are plenty of fabulous dupes on the high street if you look hard enough. Prada have always been famous for their nylon crossbody bags, but if you don't have a spare £1,000, then Primark have a fabulous alternative this season in an array of colours. My pick is the cream version, which looks really luxe and is just £12. Another great little summer bag is by one of my favourite independent brands Oliver Bonas. They are a mecca for unique finds and their yellow beaded bag is very luxe, and it just screams summer and sunshine.

his season, the fashion world showcased an attitude that sums up the mentality we need heading into the second half of the year; bravery in being bold, and with that being said, bravery in being comfortable. We are being encouraged to mix colours with patterns, and told to take advantage of a bold combination of colour blocking. The trends of summer 2021 are allowing you to take risks, maybe even a leap out of that comfort zone, yet still remaining true to yourself and your style. POSITIVE ageing his month at Tria Woman we have been looking at the transition into menopause, a topic that many women have difficulty navigating, especially as there is so much conflicting information – so what’s the answer? Well we are all individuals, with different symptoms, needs and concerns, so what is right for one woman may not be right for another. For some women, the physical symptoms such as hot flashes, weight gain and foggy thinking are intense and overwhelming. Other women struggle with insomnia and anxiety. Some women find the end of their ability to produce children to be a huge loss and feel an overwhelming sense of grief for their youth. And then there are women who experience all of these symptoms or any number of combinations! It's not surprising that there is so much confusion about finding a solution. We also have so much pressure on us from society, media and personal expectations to look and feel young. How do we compete with this idea that to have value as a woman we need to look 25, and if or when we can’t, how do we begin to feel great about ourselves? At Tria Woman we believe that every woman deserves to feel heard and understood, and we work together to establish which hormones are out of balance and tailor a bespoke plan to suit her, and (most importantly) we support her journey to positive ageing. NICOLA LEWIS

Mind to

matter

This Girl Can Organise’s approach to decluttering shows how it can boost your mental health. Founder and Chigwell local Nicola Lewis explains how it all works By ELLIE-MAE HAMMOND

A

s the stigma behind mental health erodes, the conversation on how to keep our minds healthy has become something that is taken very seriously. The face behind ‘This Girl Can Organise’, Nicola Lewis, is making it her mission to connect the dots between the art of organisation and the effect this has on our mental health and wellbeing. “My decluttering journey began when I was made redundant, previously I was an investment banker,” the Chigwell local starts her story. “One day, I sat down with my husband and brainstormed my next moves. I knew I wanted my next career venture to be something that was a hobby and a passion combined.” From a day spent at her kitchen table, Lewis kept spiralling back round to one talent of hers that stuck out like no other. “I was raised by two queens of organisation, my mother and my grandma, so I learned from the best and I was good at it. Growing up I had a really happy childhood, and within that, my life

44

was full of happy routine. I think this is where my love for organisation came from.” It’s easy to see that Lewis’s passion for organisation is infectious and deep rooted. “It’s all fun and games being good at organisation, but I wanted to find a way to help others through this hobby of mine, it was a no-brainer to me, a way to have a positive effect on someone else’s life.” As someone who is very open about the conversation surrounding mental health, I was intrigued to hear Lewis’s take on how it is so deeply connected with organisation. “They are massively connected,” she insists, “there’s two sides to it. From my experience working with different clients, I see the extreme, which is the need to clean constantly due to the need of control, or to combat anxiety. “When it comes down to applying your need to declutter to your state of mind, it’s important to not overwhelm yourself, set up small tasks, one tick off the list is better than none – celebrate those small wins,” she says. I find myself relating to every word she is saying, the thought of tackling more than I can chew sometimes has a negative

effect on my mental health. “Look into your current mood and see how you can heighten that, this will then have a snowball impact on how you process the tasks that need to be done. It’s all about balance, don’t apply pressure to do everything at once, pull section by section, and step by step.”

“I want to show people this is what you can achieve if you want to bring calm back into your home”

DECLUTTERING PUTS MANY AT EASE

The reality of Lewis’s talent manifesting into something beyond a hobby came in the form of a book deal from HarperCollins. “I was in complete shock really,” she says. “I knew my main focus was to offer people some direction to their household routine, without it sounding overwhelming or dictatorial. MAKE YOUR HOME WORK FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

I wanted it to be a ‘this is what you can achieve if you want to bring calm back into your home’, this is what people are wanting if their desire is to get rid of the clutter inside their home and inside their mind. I offer real practical solutions, bringing a fun element to organising. There’s plenty of people out there waving the flag for us organisers, but I think what sets me apart is my focus on people, how they can update themselves with various parts of their mental health through decluttering.” The process, as she explains, is kept simple. “I get the client to write down all that they want to be done and what they want to change, we then get the necessary things to carry this out, I arrive and begin the decluttering. And then I implement a system, that can be maintained after I leave.” The future is bright for This Girl Can Organise. There’s word of a second book, a YouTube channel on the way, and a potential course is being developed. Watch this decluttered spaced.

TOP TIPS This Girl Can Organise’s three ways to improve your mental health in your home PREP AND PLAN Keep a notepad beside your bed at night (as this is when most ideas/thoughts come to us), extract any thoughts whenever you have them, empty your head and get them down on paper.

HELLO HAPPY PLACE Get into your happy place, slap on some bangers and get into the right headspace.

COMFORT Make sure you are surrounded by a few of your favourite things, whether that’s some snacks or a cold glass of Gin&Tonic. Motivation is key.

W

ith so many distractions keeping our minds occupied, from the ongoing pandemic to Brexit fears and the ever-growing influence of social media, it is no surprise that for many of us, concentration and productivity levels are at an all-time low. In addition to this, our diets, which have a huge impact on overall wellbeing, often fall short in providing the essential nutrients needed to boost brain health. A diet high in processed foods, sugars and refined carbohydrates can cause insulin fluctuations, increase toxic load, and create an inflamed body. This all has a negative impact on cognitive health, and can subsequently impair your productivity and concentration levels, cognitive function, and mood. Opting for a balanced diet packed with nutrients and antioxidants, while avoiding processed and sugary foods, can go a long way. Here's how.

THINK STRAIGHT WITH GINSENG

In Chinese medicine, Ginseng is hailed as an all-healing herb, and has been recorded to help with cognitive function, memory, energy levels, and mood – perfect for supplementing busy lives. It has also been used to great effect in studies to help patients suffering with Alzheimer’s and ADHD.

THE POWER OF FERMENTED FOODS

Fermented foods contain beneficial, live bacteria and yeasts which help to restore the natural balance of your gut, VITE NATURALS SUPPLEMENTS

stomach, and intestines. Foods such as kimchi, miso soup, sauerkraut, yogurt and tofu contain good bacteria, leading to a healthy and well-balanced gut. This can in turn help to improve mood and increase brain function, providing the necessary boost to your productivity.

ADD A LITTLE ZINC

Zinc is a vital nutrient for brain health and many who experience mental health problems are found to be deficient in zinc. An easy way to up your zinc intake and boost your brain power is by consuming foods like pumpkin seeds, cashews, almonds, and spinach.

UP YOUR FISH INTAKE

From salmon to sardines, mackerel to trout, the health fats found in oily fish are widely recognised for being some of the best brain foods around. The fats in oily fish contain the highest concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids, proven to have a positive difference on brain health and productivity. The compounds found in Omega 3s have also been proven to aid the transmission of chemical signals from cell to cell, keeping us more alert and focused. For those looking for a more sustainable way to up their omegas, try Vite Brain, a new range of supplements and delicious snack bars. Including a unique eight ingredient Nootropic and Omega formulation which has been formulated to provide your brain with everything it needs for peak performance, a daily dose can help you to feel sharper, think faster and focus longer.

“Diets have a huge impact on overall wellbeing”

TAKE A CHILL PILL

Many experience brain fog and a dip in concentration thanks to being constantly on the go and trying to multitask. It is important to include some down time in your busy schedule, simply to relax and turn your thoughts off. Aim for at least 15 minutes per day of down time.

LOAD UP ON ‘SUPER’ NUTRIENTS

Magnesium is a super nutrient, which is used in almost every process in the body. Neurotransmitters in the brain use magnesium to stimulate and regulate electrical activity. This super nutrient can also help to protect brain cells from the damage caused by poor diet and external toxins.

STOCK UP ON B VITAMINS

B vitamins are widely underrated in the food world, with foods such as legumes, green vegetables, wholegrain bread and even Marmite containing it. Not only do they help power your brain, they also help to form red blood cells and break down chemicals, whilst helping conditions like anxiety and depression, consequently boosting mental clarity. vitenaturals.com

re you feeling emotional or struggling with up and down hormones, mood swings or anxiety? Do you feel like you have brain fog or that you are forgetting things or walking into a room with no idea what you went in there for? Have you lost your sex drive or want to have sex but find your body just isn’t playing ball? Do you keep meaning to book in for that breast check and smear but keep putting it to the back of the pile with all your other responsibilities? Do you suffer with the sensation of something hanging down in between your legs or wear dark trousers and Tena Lady pads because you are worried you will leak urine if you laugh, sneeze, cough or run? Do you have faecal incontinence which stops you doing activities you love or even leaving the house for fear or embarrassment? Do you suffer with niggling pains in your muscles or joints that are just dragging you down?

Have you gained weight during lockdown and are feeling at odds with your body? Do you feel tired and sluggish and just not yourself but are not sure why? As women our health concerns are as individual, varied and diverse as we are, but one thing binds us together, we often put our own needs last.

TAKE BACK CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH

T

he last year in particular has taken its toll and, with life as we know it on the backburner, many women have sidelined their health and wellbeing in order to cope with the new challenges life has thrown their way. The pandemic and lockdowns have impacted our lives physically and emotionally but they have also shown us how important looking after our health and wellbeing is and as a result, many women are now feeling inspired to take back control of their health. Someone who is leading the way in this charge is Dr Mayoni Gooneratne, who has announced the launch of the Well Woman

service/programme at Human Health by The Clinic™, designed to facilitate and promote good health for every woman everywhere. So, if you have a constant niggling worry about your health but have been ignoring it in the midst of trying to juggle everything else and are struggling to find time to get it sorted, then Dr Mayoni is here to tell you, you don’t have to suffer in silence any more.

HEALTH & BEAUTY • WELLBEING

“As a nation, we have become very illness-focused rather than wellness-facing... our future lies in lifestyle medicine” to announce the introduction of its Well Woman programme. Dr Mayoni is extremely passionate about women’s health. A leading authority on sexual health and sexual regeneration as well as the founder of two award-winning aesthetic clinics in South East London, she has spent years working with her female patients helping them to age well. Now she wants to help them build strength and resilience through optimal health, increasing their chances of enjoying healthy longevity. She punctuated her surgical training with a four year period of research at the Blizzard Institute under the supervision of Professor Sir Norman Williams where she looked at pelvic floor disorders, namely faecal incontinence and this is where her passion was ignited. “I was startled at the huge prevalence of this condition in women and the fact it was such a silent but debilitating condition”, Dr Mayoni says. “This is probably where my passion for female wellness has come from. I also realised how many human illnesses were preventable or

improved with better community based care which could mean a reduced need for drastic surgical options. As a nation, we have become very illness-focused rather than wellnessfacing. We look for answers when our health has deteriorated to an extent where we then need medicines and surgery, which have risks and complications. This approach also places huge pressures on the NHS and the people working within it, which are not sustainable. I believe our future lies in lifestyle medicine.” The clinic utilises effective evidence-based medicine combined with advice and support from allied medical professionals including a physiotherapist, nutritionist and health coach.

FEMALE-CENTRIC PACKAGES INCLUDE •  BHRT package •  Pelvic floor health •  Well woman checks •  The Human Health Kitchen with Nena Foster •  Acupuncture for hormonal health

The Well Woman Clinic is a consultation and health assessment designed around the specific needs and concerns of the female body. At its core the ethos is to help women to feel like they are listened to, not just fobbed off with anti-depressants and that there is nothing to be embarrassed about as they are not alone. Your journey starts with an hourlong consultation that can be done online at home. During this session, Dr Mayoni will get to know you not only medically but as a person, human-to-human. She will likely suggest some baseline blood tests which will be followed up in a second hour-long session where she will also discuss a no-obligation personalised treatment plan that has been tailored around you and your needs. As part of this, you can expect a full physical examination including all your observations such as height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, heart and lung function and range of movement, as well as a breast exam and/or self-exam, a pelvic exam and screening for fertility, ovarian and sexual health problems. You will also undergo an extensive blood test and the results, along with the findings from your assessment, will be used to recommend any treatments and/or possible referrals for mammograms and pelvic scanning for example. With clinics in Honor Oak Park and Crystal Palace, London, Human Health is the future of healthcare, putting you in the driving seat and giving you responsibility for your own health and self-improvement journey. “Giving you the answers and tools to looking after yourself is the key to our long term health and the relief of suffering from chronic but preventable illness”, Dr Mayoni says. Human Health is designed for living in a post-Covid country and aims to tackle the modern health problems we faced in 2020 and beyond.” Visit the Human Health website: drmhumanhealth.co.uk to find out more or book a consultation today by calling 0208 054 9191 or using the online booking tool on our website. • Join in the conversation with on Instagram @humanhealth.theclinic #HumanHealth #FutureHuman.

“Small plates are becoming a much more sociable way of dining and spending time with others”

I

t’s pretty astonishing to think that – at the time of writing – it’s been 17 months of turning on the news or reading the papers and having one thing dominate what we see or hear about. Ever since 23 March, 2020, when we first went into lockdown, Covid-19 has never been far from the headlines, if at all, but with Boris Johnson announcing enough is enough with restrictions, maybe – just maybe – we can get on with our lives as best we can. It’s been 17 months of keeping ourselves busy, or having to accept a few changes to our daily routines, but there have been so many businesses that have somehow had to battle to stay afloat. We have lost some well-loved and established local haunts in this time, whereas other, newer kids on the block, didn’t have years of building up a local following to help support them in the darkest time. However, quality will

always win out – and Loughton’s T&G’s Tapas Bar & Bistro is a case in point. For over 20 years, the team behind T&G’s have been serving up high quality cusine, and the love for their craft saw them open a new venue on Loughton’s High Road in February 2020. “I think the approach to tapas [in the UK] has changed over the last two decades,” says Georgina Whitney, owner of T&G’s. “Small plates are becoming a much more sociable way of dining and spending time with family and friends. When this location came up for sale, we wanted to offer locals something different to the other eating options in Loughton – and we thought tapas worked well.” With the ever-changing travel restrictions, many of us have missed out on our regular trip to Spain, but T&G’s certainly makes a good go of offering the same kind of ambience we love so much

overseas (bar the weather, but there’s not much they can do about that). Visiting since they opened up once again to the public in May, there’s a proper easy-going vibe at T&G’s, with the whole experience being laid-back and relaxing. What’s more, it feels like they have been missed. “We have been busy since re-opening,” smiles Georgina. “We have had lots of our regular customers returning and telling us how pleased they are to see us back in business.” It’s little surprise given the popularity of their menu, which satisfies all lovers of tapas. “The garlic prawns, padron peppers, olives and steak are real favourites,” Georgina says about that. “Although we have introduced a menu for diners who prefer a main meal – maybe for those who do not appreciate sharing their food,” she laughs. Georgina appears delighted with getting back to business and it’s little wonder given the struggles faced by the hospitality industry since March 2020. “It has been very tough,” she nods. “We are so grateful to have been able to ride the storm and re-open, unlike so many other unfortunate businesses. We were unable to offer takeaways during lockdown – we did attempt it, but we all agreed it wasn’t viable as tapas does not travel well.” Thankfully, 17 months down the road, T&G’s are back to doing what they do best. Although Covid-19 isn’t going anywhere, the late summer months will hopefully offer up new experiences to create happier memories for us all. As Georgina says: “We are confident now things are slowly getting back to normality that we will go from strength to strength during the summer – and the lockdowns will soon be a distant memory.” T& G’ S TA PA S B A R & B I S T R O 154 High Road, Loughton, IG10 4BE 020 8508 0526 tngtapas.co.uk

Lemon tart Serves 8

INGREDIENTS For the pastry • 190g gluten-free flour • 95g vegan butter • 75g coconut sugar • 25g ground almonds • Pinch of salt • Pinch of xanthan gum • 25g apple sauce

For the lemon curd • 400g coconut cream (tinned is fine) • Juice of 5½ oranges (400ml) • Juice of 4½ large lemons (250ml) • 285ml agave • 2½ tsp vanilla extract • 80g cornflour To serve • Approx. 1 tbsp zusto

METHOD 1 To make the pastry, mix all the ingredients in a food processor until a soft dough forms. Roll the pastry out to 3mm thick and then gently lay in a 28cm tart dish, lined with baking paper and buttered. Ensure the edges rise up to at least 3cm and pop into the freezer for at least 2 hours.

2 Preheat the oven to 160°C (normal) | 140°C (fan) | gas mark 3. 3 Put all the ingredients into a heavy-based saucepan on a medium heat and whisk until the mixture thickens like a custard, but don’t allow it to boil. Remove from the heat and pour into the frozen pastry case and cut the pastry at the edge of the cream before baking it for 25 minutes. Let it cool down completely and store in the fridge for at least 4 hours before serving. 4 To serve, sprinkle with a little zusto and either use a blow torch or pop under the grill for a minute to caramelise before serving.

verybody knows that a restaurant's markup on wine is hefty. And with home meal kits here to stay even when eating out is back, our domestic wine supplies need to keep up. The UK’s biggest ondemand fine wine delivery app, Wine App, stocks hundreds of bottles that you’ll find in restaurants such as Nobu, Sushi Samba, Hakkasan, The Ivy and more, but sells them at a fraction of the price. It's a simple but devastatingly effective concept. Download the app (it appears as an unmistakable single glass of wine on your phone), set up a profile that includes personal preferences, and you're ready to order. There are discounts when you buy more than four bottles, plus lots of offers – and amazingly, delivery is within the hour. Yes, that's right, the hour. Sometimes even 20 minutes. Our order was scheduled to come within a staggering 35 minutes – and a small delay of a few minutes on the estimated time resulted in a (frankly unnecessary) compensation voucher. So this isn't just a wine app, it's an emergency wine app. Sunny day and nothing in the fridge? You're just a few taps on your phone away from a delivery of chilled, high quality wine that beats any corner shop run. The selection is ever-expanding and comes with concise tasting notes – and when you build your profile, you can note wines to reorder (or avoid). The app will suggest things for you based on your tastes. In all, it's like having your own personal on-demand wine cellar in your phone, without the hassle of the actual cellar. WINEAPP wineapp.com

orgive me for stating the obvious, but taking part in sport brings a wide variety of physical, mental and social skills for everyone; it especially bodes well for children as they grow. From experience, as a parent, we can’t expect school PE lessons to be enough, nor will they fuel a want for more sport – it needs to be supported with additional recreational sport. The older a child gets involved in sport, the less likely they are to consider it an important part of their lives, and this is one of the reasons why my structured school holiday football camps are available to take part in from just four-years-old. The Campioni Soccer Academy is a great avenue for me to help to promote a healthy lifestyle and also to help encourage children’s social skills and boost their confidence. As a parent and/or coach, children look up to you as an authority figure – this is why at my camps, alongside highly qualified UEFA coaches, I have guest speakers conducting Q&As to educate the children about fitness and health in a fun and engaging manner, whether this be the West Ham chef talking about healthy food choices for pre and post exercise, or Leyton Orient’s fitness coach promoting safe exercise. If it helps children to secure an interest in healthy living and sport then this is a result.

DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

There are many good reasons to introduce a pet into your family, but it’s not a decision to be made lightly. It is a huge commitment and a lot of hard work, I now understand that the love you feel for your pet dog is a double-edged sword. Driving

home from Wales recently with our new addition to the family – Reggie the Border Collie – throwing up in the back seat, I realised the hard work ahead, but when my son started clearing up after him and I witnessed the instant companionship it reassured and quite frankly melted me! We purposely waited until our children were old enough to be responsible for a dog. Reggie has brought a lot of love and fun into our house, and setting a schedule for when the children should feed, exercise and clean up after him has helped to build responsibility and has provided a sense of organisation for them, which is very important for their development. It has also got me walking in the rain – and I hate rain – but I find the experience to be very therapeutic! The Campioni Soccer Academy is for children aged between 4 and 14, taking place at Debden Park School from 23 August, with summer fitness sessions in early August. ast summer, when the world was in a midst of a global pandemic, one local family were about to go through their own personal nightmare. “It started with a few bruises during the summer holidays,” recalls Gemma Cotts, mum to then 12-year-old Libby. “Libby had been on lots of bike rides during lockdown so we didn’t think anything of it – you wouldn’t. There were also some spots on her legs, but we thought it was a reaction to a salt scrub she had tried. “During a hockey session at school Libby took a hit to her hand,” Gemma recalls. “A bruise developed extremely quickly, and the matron knew this wasn’t right. She didn’t think it should be broken, but encouraged us to get it checked out.” Libby was taken to hospital for a checkup. A blood test revealed that there was something very wrong with her immune system and the family’s world changed when a number of doctors came to pass on the results. “It was at that point they mentioned it could be leukaemia,” says Gemma. “I couldn’t believe it; I was shocked and stunned. It was unbelievable and I started crying – I’d come into hospital with Libby because of a suspected broken hand! Libby had been feeling absolutely fine. She hadn’t had a cough or cold since February. Treatment started straight away – Libby needed platelets, and to be taken to the specialist hospital at Great Ormond Street. They sent us in a cab with a nurse and Libby’s bloods. The next stage was for a blood transfusion and a bone marrow aspiration to find out what we were dealing with.” Libby was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia (SAA), a serious condition affecting the blood, where the bone marrow and stem cells do not produce enough blood cells. Her diagnosis meant that she could no longer take part in her favourite sports or have horse riding lessons. “Libby is really active and fearless,” says Gemma. “Abseiling, canoeing – a snake round the neck – she loves it all. She doesn’t give up, tries new things until she’s got it.” That inner strength to never give up saw Libby embark on a fundraising appeal for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on

LIBBY HAS BRAVELY FACED UP TO HER SITUATION

“LIBBY IS REALLY ACTIVE AND FEARLESS. SHE DOESN'T GIVE UP” Anthony Nolan’s fundraising activity and a large number of people joining the charity’s register in early December means there is a backlog of currently around 25,000 potential donors. The charity has been overwhelmed with support and need to raise up to an extra £500,000 to add people to the register, from ordering more swab packs to analysing completed swabs in its laboratory. Libby and her supporters managed to raise £32,000 in just three weeks for Anthony Nolan, but bad news was to come: she was due to receive her transplant just before Christmas, but unfortunately the stem cell donor became unavailable. A huge effort was made to find a donor and an action group, ‘Love for Libby’, was formed to get publicity for Libby's cause. This went viral with many TV stars and footballers putting out personal appeals and culminated in Piers Morgan interviewing Gemma and Libby. It went down to the wire, but a donor was found in March after nearly six months of searching and at this time Libby is still seriously ill with her immune system very low. The bone marrow transplant has taken, her engraftment level is at 93% donor,

however Libby must stay in family isolation. GOSH are treating Libby and are hopeful that her immune levels will improve with all the medication and help they are giving her. For now, Libby’s fundraising mission continues, with a special Love for Libby Golf Day due to be held at West Essex Golf Club on 10 September. Absolutely West Essex columnist Haifa and Sing it Events is generously providing all the evening’s entertainment. The golf day is being arranged to celebrate, thank and raise funds for Anthony Nolan Trust for finding a donor to save the life of Libby and to help other children that will need their help in the future. AMANDA CAMPBELL IS DELIGHTED TO WELCOME PUPILS BACK

A WELCOME

RETURN Amanda Campbell, headteacher of Avon House Preparatory School, marvels at the resilience of her pupils and how the school building has, finally, come alive once again By MARK KEBBLE

Q Before we begin, could you give us

a brief overview of your school...

A Avon House is a co-educational

independent prep school situated on the edge of Epping Forest. A two form entry structure allows for well-proportioned classes catering for pupils in preparation for 11+ and common entrance examinations. Our curriculum is broad and is delivered by an experienced team of teachers, many of whom specialise in languages, music, sport and art. Our partnership with The Woodford Wells club gives pupils club membership as well as good access to the ground’s facilities during the school week.

Q Looking at the past 17 months

or so, have you ever experienced a period like this in education? A My teaching career stems back 30 years and I can truly say that I never imagined a

72

time when classrooms would be empty and the noise you come to love in the playground is silenced. We have all faced challenges, but for children to be separated from their friends was particularly hard. Thinking pastorally during this time has been at the forefront of our minds ensuring that pupils and their families felt supported. Resilience became a buzz word around school during the pandemic and I am so impressed with the way the pupils really embraced this.

“Resilience became a buzz word during the pandemic” Q How did the school cope

with the lockdowns?

A We stepped into lockdown with a positive

mind-set. From live lessons, pastoral meet ups, assemblies and the weekly quiz over our Google portal, Avon House was able to offer a full timetable of lessons to all pupils. Art lessons focused on toilet rolls, egg boxes and silver tin foil, whilst our modern languages teachers appeared to teach Spanish and French to pupils and parents alike. Pupils appeared on screen at the right time (although I’m not sure whether many were still in pyjama bottoms!), and games and PE lessons required pupils to complete the weekly physical challenges.

Q How did your teachers cope

with working from home? A From day one when we thought this would only be for a short period of time, the teaching and administration teams worked on providing the best opportunities for the pupils as they worked at home. We hosted a large key worker provision on extended hours to support our NHS parents and many teachers found it easier to work in school delivering lessons via the school portal than from home. To keep spirits high the daily online class meets allowed for dressing up, quizzes and dance routines. The resilience demonstrated by pupils was also shown by the staff team: working, laughing and supporting each other was key during lockdown times. Q Did your pupils surprise

you in any way?

A I was so surprised by the pupil’s positive

attitude to making the best of the situation they found themselves in. From videos and photos sent from home to joining in the daily chats, they all had so much to share. Many walked for our fundraiser for MND where we virtually walked from Land’s End to John O’Groats and care packages were

“Schools are not about the buildings, but what fills them. We needed pupils back in school” provided to support our local resident care home. New skills were learnt like riding a bike without stabilizers, enjoying the great outdoors and many children learnt to cook delicious recipes from my weekly cooking videos. I think the pandemic taught them that there will always be someone worse off than themselves and that the small things they do have a big impact on the recipient. Q What's the greatest thing about

having everyone back at school? A The classrooms are buzzing again and although I didn’t know it hearing the sound of music again was uplifting. To see the pupil’s face to face and reconnect with

each other was so important. Schools are not about the buildings, but what fills them, and having the pupils back in school was just what we needed. Q What are your hopes for when schools

return for the new school year?

A I hope when the new school year starts

in September we can put the past behind us and focus on the future. To re-engage with all the events that usually take place in school are in the calendar and I am looking forward to welcoming new families to school. To have the whole school family together for assembly will be a real treat as it is a celebration occasion that we like to share together. Engaging with other schools on the sports field and competing will be most welcome in the autumn. We have all learnt a lot from the last 16 months and we know that should we need to do the same again we will be well prepared. FAMILY • TALENT JOSHUA LORD

Born to PERFORM A West Hatch High School student on his West End break, making others smile and being given a hard time by his mum By JOSHUA LORD

I

have always had a passion for performing – with both my parents involved in the arts, it was inevitable. It is weird as I have never felt pressured to perform by anyone. I joined a local dance school when I was nine and was given the opportunity to play Lumiere in the musical number Be Our Guest at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Haymarket. It was after this performance that I realised how much I loved singing, and that I wanted to be a performer. During my time at West Hatch High School, I was given numerous solo opportunities in music concerts and, in Year 9, I auditioned for Elf the Musical and was given the role of Buddy, which was my first actual show. I also taught myself how to play the piano and the guitar so I could try and write my own music. My love for performing continued to grow and resulted in me choosing music, drama and dance as GCSE options. This is when things got a little more interesting with my mother becoming the music teacher at West Hatch – being taught by her was certainly an experience. You may think this meant I got away with things, but picture this. Monday morning in my house, both mum and I getting ready for school, arguing about me taking too long to eat my breakfast. Then, at school, having to call her Ms Lord and not mum was weird to say the least, and I think she was harder on me than other students. One time she asked the class if they had folders at home, and I said ‘Ms Lord, do you know if we have any folders at home?’. Her response was ‘ask your mum’… I mentioned earlier my love of performing, and the real buzz comes

76

“The reward in making people smile is my continued motivation to progress in the music industry” from bringing joy and entertaining an audience. Through West Hatch I was given the opportunity to perform for the local Rotary’s Youth Makes Music event, which led to me performing at a memory café for people with dementia. This was such a humbling experience as it proved the power that music has over people and that by singing songs by Sinatra and The Beatles, I was able to play a small part in bringing them happiness. I was then given the honour, having been selected out of several

hundred performers, of singing at The Royal Festival Hall on behalf of Rotary International, which was an incredible experience, and I also performed solos in a show at the amazing Indig02. It was during the first lockdown that I focussed a lot of my time and energy on transforming my body. Working out every day helped focus my mind and helped keep me mentally healthy. I also wrote songs and used the time to build an online presence, with to date 121.6K followers on TikTok @jmlordy, a following on Instagram @joshualordmusic, and a growing YouTube Channel @joshualord. On VE Day last year I was invited to sing at an outdoor event at Lambwood Heights Care Home in Chigwell, and this year on the same day I sang at Belmont Lodge Care Home in Chigwell. The reward in making people smile is my continued motivation to progress in the music industry and I hope to continue my education in September at ELAM to study Music Production & Performance.

mama PARENTING

“The power to eradicate racism is very real”

I

t would be hard for anyone to ignore the news reports referencing Black Lives Matter and the protests in support of and against the movement. After the alarming killing of George Floyd last year and the subsequent fury that enveloped thousands of people around the world, you must have had questions yourself about how or why this has all happened? What if you have a child who was also asking you questions? What could you possibly say to explain the anger or hurt that was being beamed into your home? Racism may just not be an issue for you and so it is hard to talk about something that doesn’t or hardly impacts on your life. So perhaps the first question should be – do you need to talk about what’s happening with your child? If your child is asking questions because either they have seen or overheard something then please don’t shy away from answering, be brave and tackle the question head on. I say be brave because dealing with this topic can feel like a minefield.

Most people worry they will say the wrong thing or use terminology that may be insulting, but remember, it’s ok to answer “I don’t know” to a question, as long as it’s backed up with: “but let’s go and find out!” If you try to dismiss such a serious topic, your child will sense your discomfort and attempt to rationalise in their own immature mind why mummy/daddy shut them or a topic down. If you give them the impression that there is something to hide, shy away from or be embarrassed about, then that is the impression that they will be left with. This would be wrong, particularly when history tells us that it is those who fail to question or challenge wrongdoing that permits such wrongdoing to fester. If your child hasn’t raised the topic that doesn’t mean they aren’t aware. Children are being subconsciously taught about society, including race, all the time. In nursery they are taught to describe themselves; their family and their community; they watch TV and will notice subtle differences far more than we give them credit for. Some toddlers will be able to tell you what a ‘girls’ toy is as opposed to a ‘boys’ or that grandma is really old! When you hear a toddler say this, have you ever stopped to wonder who has told them this or why? Moreover, have you ever stopped to ask them why they think this and whether the statement is true? I suspect if you did, you would get a blank stare. Children don’t understand why the differences they are identifying should create feelings of upset or anger, and this is where you come in. You may find that you need to challenge yourself first about your own views on what you think racism is. How do you express feelings about other races when at home, safely behind closed doors? Do your children, for example, possess literature that references those from other races in a positive light? Do your children’s toys only reflect the inside of their home as

opposed to what their community looks like? Be in no doubt, children are not colourblind and neither is the society in which they live. If you do care about your child understanding and appreciating other races, then take responsibility for ensuring that they receive clear positive messages from you, and that you can reinforce that positive message if they challenge you with a misconceived one. Racism is not innate, if you are racist you will have been taught to believe that your race is superior to another. This could be because your race is deemed more intelligent, worthy, or important. However, the power to eradicate racism is very real and attainable through education, information and communication. Racism isn’t just about the tragic loss of George Floyd (or so many others like him). Racist negative stereotyping is just as harmful, it leads certain groups to believe that others should only have particular jobs, that they are deemed as a threat or that it’s ok for them to be treated less favourably because society is suspicious of them. It is just as important to tackle this bias, because in failing to address it, those who suffer the unfair treatment will become disaffected, upset and turn away from the more conventional methods of seeking redress because they can no longer trust in the system. Those protesting the death of Mr Floyd no longer trust that the system will protect them from injustice. So…. it’s over to you.

THE U LTIMATE G UIDE TO FING E R FOODS FOR BABY

F I N G E R F O O D S How to introduce finger foods from the start of weaning – what to serve and how to serve it By ANNABEL KARMEL

L

et’s talk finger foods. From around six to six and a half months, you can introduce soft finger foods into your baby’s diet. Finger foods are the ideal way to introduce your baby to different textures. Handing over the reins to your baby will allow them to work out how to get food to their mouth, break pieces off and chew. Don’t worry, even if your baby doesn’t have teeth yet, you’ll be surprised by just how powerful a baby’s gums are! So, what finger foods are best for baby? And how do you prepare them so that they are safe for your little food explorer? Fear not! I’ve pulled together this handy reference guide on how to introduce finger foods from the very start of weaning – whether ANNABEL KARMEL

it’s carrot batons, broccoli florets, avocado wedges or chopped berries, I’ve got those first taste fruits and veggies covered! Ready for some finger food exploration? Let’s go!

Banana, apple and yoghurt pancakes

Finger foods in the first few weeks If your baby is new to finger foods, start with single veggies, and I always recommend sweet root vegetables such as carrot and sweet potato. After only having naturally sweet breastmilk or formula until now, these are foods that your baby is likely to by interested in, so a great place to start. However, it’s important that you also introduce more bitter green veggies such as broccoli and spinach at the beginning alongside those sweeter root veggies. If introduced early in your baby’s weaning journey (by that, I mean the first week of weaning and beyond), and with repeated exposure, it’s likely they’ll be more receptive to these foods in the long run. You can start with offering a new food once a day for the first few days, and then increase this to twice a day by days three and four. In finger food terms, a small portion will be anything from two to four small batons of food. As a guide, your baby should generally be eating three small portions a day by the end of week two.

Makes: 25 small pancakes

Ingredients • 1 egg • 175g/6 oz Greek yoghurt • 50 ml/2 fl oz milk • 100g/4 oz self-raising flour • 1 overripe banana, peeled and mashed • 1 sweet apple, peeled, cored and grated • Sunflower or vegetable oil, for cooking

DIRECTIONS 1 Crack the egg into a bowl and whisk with the yoghurt and milk. 2 Sift in the flour and whisk until smooth. 3 Add the banana and apple and mix well. 4 Heat a little oil in a large frying pan. 5 Spoon small amounts of batter in the pan and fry for a few seconds until bubbles appear on the surface. 6 Flip over and cook on the other side for one minute until lightly golden.

Finger Food Safety Guidelines 1. NEVER leave your baby alone whilst eating and they must always be supported in an upright position. 2. Become familiar with first aid procedures. Check out the Red Cross or NHS websites which have step-by-step training videos or there will likely be first aid courses near where you live. 3. NEVER give whole pieces of small solid foods, or raw fruit or vegetables that could easily lodge in and obstruct the throat. Foods such as grapes, large blueberries and cherry tomatoes should be safely cut up into quarters. 4. Avoid fruit with stones or remove pips and stones before offering to your baby. 5. Eating is a skill and tackling texture is another developmental milestone that your baby will have to train for on their weaning journey. Which is why at the start of weaning, finger foods need to be soft – your baby should be able to squash finger foods between finger and thumb. 6. To start with, avoid finger foods that are hard that your baby could break into large chunks such as cucumber. 7. Avoid cutting foods into circular coin shapes especially if they are raw e.g. round coins of raw carrot. 8. Cutting food into batons or wedges is for your baby. They will need to be fairly long (roughly 5 – 6cm) so that some sticks out of their fist and they are narrow enough for them to hold easily. 9. Remove the skin from most fruits and vegetables. The skin introduces a new texture which can be difficult for your baby to manage and could lead to choking. 10. Babies do have a tendency to store food in their mouth, so just have a quick check they’re not storing any spare food as a snack for later before you take them out of the highchair!

y day, a magazine designer, and by evening, an interior design sensation. Up until four years ago, West Essex local Amy Pereira had an illustrious 15-year career in the publishing industry, until it became obvious that she only had time for one career path – and that’s where @littlehouseinlondon started. She says: “For me, this is where my eye for interior design began. How things fitted onto a page. I love magazines, there’s really nothing like flicking through a magazine. But I guess I always loved the internet, you can be on there for an hour, and be exposed to thousands of images, and bam – this is where the concept of trends begins.” With a huge creative portfolio, Pereira always knew interior design was a major passion of hers. “When I was at S Magazine, I worked very closely with the lifestyle editor,” she explains. “I went along to all the celebrity shoots, but I also went on all the interior shoots. I guess you could say this is exactly the moment I knew me being a dab hand at interiors was more than a hobby. And to this day, this is exactly how I see my Instagram, I am the art director of my own page.” At the time of Pereira’s interior design revelation, she was at S Magazine, already sharing images of her home styling on her own social media pages, just for some fun – until a penny dropping moment. “I was on the ‘Not on the High Street’ Instagram, looking at something amazing,” she smiles, “and I clicked on the tag attached to the image, and I came across this account which was sharing images of their own home styling. I was wowed. I had no clue what an influencer was, I had no idea that you could

AMY PEREIRA'S HOME IS BURSTING WITH COLOUR

“I started to discover likeminded people, conversation sparked and social media friendships would blossom” actually get paid for doing something like this, that people gifted you items to simply share them. The whole reason I fell into this is for my love of interiors, and I guess you could say, I had the eye, naturally acquired from my days as a magazine designer.” Getting a platform is one thing, but maintaining your space is another. Pereira explains the importance of using certain tools to find your very own little community. “I realised the way forward was to use hashtags,” she informs. “I started using them, I started to find people, and they me. I started to discover likeminded people, conversations sparked and social media friendships would blossom.” Starting up the account in May 2017, Pereira officially launched in the October, and with the following year came an Amara Award nomination. It’s quite obvious to me, a stranger, virtually sat across from Pereira that her passion for interior design is pure. However, her passion for her online community is unmatched. “This community is truly

magical,” she says. “It’s a safe space, we engage in conversations, inspire one another, and most importantly of all, we encourage one another.” Influencers these days tend to have negative connotations attached them, so what is Pereira’s views? “Influencers have a really bad name, and they shouldn’t have,” she says. “I personally think it really shows when an account is truly passionate about the things they are showing, I really do think that. Building an authentic audience is where it’s at. It’s about having your audience trust you, and trust that you are promoting a product that you really love. “I really want to change the way influencers of any kind are seen. I have blogger friends that I chat to, and we all feel the same. I think the interior world is slightly different to fashion and beauty. There’s a crossover for sure, but I do think it’s important that I use my voice, and that I continue to use it for other important things. I take this responsibility really seriously. For me, the biggest A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

word I could use here is authenticity. “As an influencer, I want to be aspirational,” she continues. “My house is small, hence the name I guess. I think when you have a small home, you have to tidy a lot, and be super organised, but I think it’s about creating little spaces of heaven that keeps my followers coming back for more.” Drifting off topic, I speak to Pereira about how having her account during the pandemic helped her stay in tune with ‘real life’, and a healthy mind-set along with that. She says: “I’m very honest about mental health, and I think we all suffer with it - I have. So it’s vital for me to create these spaces – some may call it interior influencing, I call it my escapism, and hopefully somebody else’s. “During the pandemic, I think it was a mutual discussion, the topic of mental health. So, I think when it came down to the content I was producing, I just wanted to share my actual journey. I know it may have sounded stupid at the time, but posting a picture of my living room was all I had, and this is why there was such an uptake in interest in DIY, because people suddenly realised that the four walls you were in was kind of all you had. I have always looked at my home from a mental health perspective,

important thing is to connect and chat to others, this is where your confidence boost to post your first picture will come from.” As someone who has never been an influencer, but has set up an account for my dog and from this I am now a member of many online pooch communities, I can really resonate with how Pereira views her online platform, how she wants to discredit the unfair stigma that is attached to the word ‘influencer’, and finally, how she plans on using the online interior design community as an advocate for changing the way ‘influencers’ are seen. Authentic, indeed.

and I would say it made me realise that what I was doing with my platform was a great thing to do, and even better thing to share. Finally, I could really come into my own. I think the reason my account stuck out throughout the pandemic, and continues to, is my ability to create these safe spaces.” Our time together comes to an end as she needs to get cracking with a new project at home. However, before I let Pereira continue to paint the walls of her new shed, of which she is very excited to show us all very soon, I could not let her go without giving us some of her tips for those who are wanting to start up their own online interior styling platform. “Connect and chat, be a part of the conversation,” she says. “Use hashtags, this is where you start.  The stunning new Capri woven lounge chair is perfect for lazing around in the garden during what remains of the summer. This chair is suitable to be left outside, but there is a recommendation that during the winter months and prolonged wet weather you should bring it indoors. The chair cushion is easily removable and should be brought indoors overnight when not in use. ellajames.co.uk

It combines modern, sleek lines with grey cushions and advanced texteline upholstery.  The Loop Dining Chair is light to handle and to move around, which has its advantages as furniture can be moved in line with the sun. The design gives a light and airy look to a verandah and is also unbelievably comfortable – air can circulate through the tautly strung construction. vivalagoon.com

Paloma Faith has launched her own brand of homewares. Absolutely takes a look By P E A R L B OY D

hat do you get if you mix floral wallpaper, animal print upholstery and paisley cushions? Welcome to the world of Paloma Faith. The singer and songwriter has dipped a toe into the world of art and design with the launch of her own interiors label, Paloma Home. Elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary with her creative eye for pattern and play, the exuberant collection encompasses fabrics,

wallpapers, soft furnishings and select upholstered pieces in statement prints. Born from her love of opulent glamour, retro bohemia and inspired by the renovation of her own kaleidoscopic London townhouse, Paloma Home is the culmination of Faith’s lifelong fascination with design and passion for vintage and thrifting. A self-confessed “nester” (and a true Cancerian), Faith has great fondness for the home and all its maternal connotations. “In times of uncertainty, the past year wholly revived my passion for my home and pouring a little bit more of ourselves into our spaces has never felt more important.”

With a nod to the romantic noirs of Wong Kar-wai and his iconic sultry aesthetic, the collection will transport you with a palette of saturated jewel tones. Each of the pieces are rich with reference: dark, loaded wallpapers are reminiscent of a louche, backstage world while highly decorative botanicals allude to a freespirited air of femininity and a touch of the bohemian. The hedonism of the music scene unites with cinematic influence to create a dazzling interiors capsule.

“Growing up we didn’t always have a lot of money, but my mum did always prioritise investing in new cushion covers and things felt brand new. With Paloma Home, you can have one piece and it changes a room - or you can embrace the whole collection, and it still works,” she says. The debut line comprises ten house prints, from Pouncing Tigers and Luxe Leopards to Oriental Leaves & Birds, Vintage Chinoiserie and Monochrome Stripes. Underpinned by a feeling of faded grandeur and retro nostalgia, highlights of the range include sumptuous velvet cushions in fiery animal prints and intricate hand-drawn birds in flight splashed across bedding for a boudoiresque cocoon, as well as leopard and tiger print seating, intricate chinoiserie print wallpaper and blinds. More is always more, with tactile finishing touches such as braiding, piping and ruffles making for an entirely multi-sensory experience. Paloma Home captures the essence of Faith’s much-loved fire and soul - a playful, premium and yet accessible collection - and a welcome mode of escapism for all. Paloma says: “Home for me is a place where there is warmth, life, vibrancy and human touch. Something truly ‘lived in’. So much beauty emerges from chaos - and I hope to share this sentiment with Paloma Home.”

“THE WEST ESSEX AREA HAS LONG BEEN A DESTINATION OF CHOICE FOR FAMILIES”

T

he semi suburban housing markets of West Essex are well poised to meet buyers’ changing demands as we move into the second half of the year, estate agents have said. While the so called ‘race for space’ and ‘flight to the countryside’ has dominated the property market over the last 12 months, locations such as Loughton, Epping, Theydon Bois, Woodford and Buckhurst Hill have more than held their own according latest research from Savills. And the demand for property looks set to continue – with the easing of social distancing restrictions and the continued vaccine rollout expected to encourage buyers back into more urban areas. According to Savills’ latest research, there were 184 agreed sales of homes above £1m in the Epping Forest district in the first five months of this year. This is a rise of 94%

when compared to the more normal trading conditions of 2019 – the first part of 2020 having been distorted because of the closure of the housing market due to the pandemic. The number of buyers registering with Savills Loughton office meanwhile is 99% higher than this time last year and sales agreed have increased by 61%. Of those under offer, 73% of properties received multiple bids, while 35% of buyers came from London. Strong demand has also led to a rise in prices, with the suburban and town markets in and around Loughton witnessing an average increase of 13.6% in the last 12 months. Homes in more rural locations have risen by an average of 10.5%. Average transaction levels in Theydon Bois, Buckhurst Hill and Chigwell are between £700,000 and £900,000, while the average price in Epping, Chingford and Woodford is between £500,000 and £700,000, according to Savills research. James Lamb (right), who leads the residential sales team at Savills in Loughton, said while the end of the stamp duty holiday is expected to cause a slight cooling of the market there still remains significant demand. “The numbers show just how much lifestyle choices made during lockdown have almost totally dominated decision-making in the prime market over the past year – and are likely to continue to do so over the coming months,” he says. “There remains a significant number of buyers still looking for larger, family homes with more space, bigger gardens and extra room to work from home. In our June client survey for example the majority of prime buyers (71%) were unconcerned about the removal of the stamp duty holiday and the motivation of those hoping to move remained high – particularly among those in their 30s and 40s, which is a key age group for West Essex. “With its varied housing stock, relative value for money when compared to London, proximity of the Central Line, superb road links and excellent schooling, the

area has long been a destination of choice for families. And as life begins to return to some degree of normality we expect a rebalance of people’s priorities as they realise they want to be closer to shops, bars and restaurants and will be going into the office two or three days a week. “Realistic pricing will be key in order to maintain momentum,” he continues, “the end of the stamp duty holiday and more homes coming onto the market will likely create a little less urgency among buyers. But it’s the semi suburban areas like West Essex that offer people the best of both worlds – within striking distance of the capital for when they need to commute and with plenty of green space such as Epping Forest right on the doorstep, which we expect to be well placed to meet changes in demand.”
