As we look forward to 2017 we have to remain an action oriented community conscious chapter. Now is the time for us to really get engaged to make sure we are supporting the communities we serve. We have to bring back the mentality of it takes a village for us to make an impact in the lives of the people we are affecting. As you sit down and draft your goals and make your resolutions for 2017 I challenge you to really look at the woman in the mirror. Be honest about the changes you need to make within to grow and to become a better you. Don’t be afraid to try new things especially if the old things aren’t working for you. Check some things off your bucket list and take some time for you. I also challenge you to recommit yourself to Zeta. Now more than ever society is in need of virtuous women. I pray that God brings you the desires of your heart. Remember we are living in our Happiness this year. Leave all the trials of 2016 behind but don’t forget the lessons you have learned. Kappa Iota Zeta 2016 Retreat: A Year Focused On Happiness Starting the sorority year with a chapter retreat has become a tradition. Led by committee chair, Soror LaNise Thrasher and the Retreat Committee, this year’s retreat allowed sorors to enjoy time in fun fellowship before the work of Zeta begins. President Shannon McGuire-Lee began the meeting by thanking sorors for their hard work during the 2015-2016 sorority year, resulting in KIZ bringing home several awards from the Zeta Grand Boule. She also launched her Happiness Project by having sorors sign her happiness poster with words of inspiration and encouragement. Sorors attending the retreat had the opportunity to donate school supplies to KIZ’s new adopted school - Asa G. Hilliard Elementary. KIZ Z-HOPE Youth Chair, Soror Shelby Messing, led the school supply drive, resulting in 3 large containers of almost 500 items being collected for the students and teachers
Attendees had the opportunity to Get Engaged via a presentation by visiting Soror Barbara Mostella, representing a neighborhood group lobbying for incorporation for unincorporated Fulton County and KIZ honored its commitment to supporting local businesses by having the retreat and lunch at D’Essence Café in East Point. The 2016 KIZ Chapter retreat was an enjoyable experience and sorors left feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the 2016 – 2017 sorority year. 2016-2017 KIZ Reclamation
The 2016-2017 KIZ Reclamation Committee consist of Sorors Cheryl Cowans, Samantha Feanny, Tiawana Ford, Charndrea Leonard, Mary Berry-Brown, Tara Lockett and Natasha Veal-Roy. Together our goal is to recruit, reclaim and retain Sorors who want to come home to Zeta and become a member of KIZ. This sorority year, as of the November 2016 meeting, we have reclaimed 10 Sorors and 2 Transfer Sorors. We have held events to greet, meet and engage Sorors to become members of Kappa Iota Zeta. Our first event this Sorority year was held in September at Soror Lockett’s house. While there, we fellowshipped and mingled while enjoying food and fun. We each took a turn and went around the room and introduced ourselves, told when and why we became Zetas. Also, Soror Cherone Smith taught the ladies how to stroll and we later had a “stroll off”. There was lots of laughter and comradery.
Our next event was held at the Sigma Zeta Foundation in October where the theme was College Night. We had 12 Sorors that attended the event that was interested in reclaiming. We also had a Soror who pledged some 30+ years ago who still have her ORIGINAL certificate and manual. We all wore t-shirts, hats, etc. from our colleges/ universities. We served food that you would have at a college game, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, chips and popcorn. We played several “getting to know you” games in which Sorors learned about another Soror that they didn’t’ know prior to that night.
