Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter Z HOPE Youth- A Year in Review
In the 2015-2016 Sorority year the Z Hope Youth Committee of Kappa Iota Zeta focused on strengthening its relationship with our adopted school, as part of the Adopt-A-School national initiative. At the beginning of the sorority year, we held our annual Back to School drive for Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary. HE Holmes is a Title I school, meaning that most of the children that attend are on free or reduced lunch and from lower income families. As a chapter we were able to donate enough school supplies to supplement the teachers resources for their students for the whole year with plenty left over to be distributed as needed for the following year. The principal of the school was so grateful for our donations and blown away, that she asked us to consider holding a winter coats and accessories drive because she said a lot of the students came to school inappropriately dressed for winter. As a chapter we were able to collect over 2,000 winter items (Coats, hats, gloves, scarves) to donate to the school to ensure any child that did not have the proper winter coats and accessories at home would be supplied with them. At the end of the year, the Youth commit-
tee provided volunteer time as well as snacks andrefreshments for a program the school was holding to recognize the achievements of some of their special needs children. Because of our help, the school was able to hold a program for all of the children as well as their parents and celebrate their accomplishments. And in keeping with the tradition we started last year, we also volunteered our time to help out on Field Day. We helped supervise as well as regulate the games and keep score, which allowed faculty and teachers to enjoy field day with their students. For our final program of the 2015-2016 Sorority Year, the Z Hope Youth Committee will be acting as a sponsor and as volunteers for the Back 2 School Extravaganza in Vine City, GA, to not only help provide schools supplies for the local children but also to give them the opportunity to interact with celebrities and other local individuals of influence where they can gain insight into the importance of school and education and advice on the every day issues they are facing in their communities.

Royal Blue for Autism
Submitted by Jacque Ward Williams, Chairperson Dr. Mildred McCoy, Co- Chairperson
For the second year, the Autism Awareness Committee of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter in collaboration with Sigma Zeta Foundation, Inc. joined the world in recognition of Autism Awareness by Lighting It Up Blue for Autism (LIUB). This program was held on April 2ndat the Sigma-Zeta Foundation in East Point, Georgia. Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships combined with rigid and repetitive behaviors. The Autism Awareness Committee operates under the umbrella of Z-HOPE as it strives to promote awareness of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This developmental disorder is diagnosed among African American children one to two years later than white children.
During the LIUB program, Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter strategically promoted the principle of scholarship. This was highlighted when the chapter presented five $100.00 scholarships to five families of children with autism. The funds will be used to subsidize the cost of tuition for physical enrichment activities that can promote health and wellness of children with autism and that are directly linked to resolving issues related to sensory-motor difficulties. These activities may include golfing, horseback riding, swimming, painting, and music and movement therapy. Among the attendees were Georgia Z-HOPE Coordinator, Kina Davis, Past International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., William E. Stanley, and East Point City Council, Honorable Sharon Shropshire. She presented a proclamation to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. for the commitment to Autism Awareness. The keynote speakers were Dr. Willie and Mrs. Dawn Jones of Stepping Stones Intervention Services. Entertainment was provided by Avery Dixon, a teenage saxophonist and a 25 piece drumline from Mundy’s Mill High School. SISTERHOOD SLUMBER SESSION
Remember when you were growing up and you had sleepovers with your family and/or friends. You were allowed to stay up until the late hours and watch the stars. You would sit and share your thoughts, your dreams and things you experienced. Our desire for the Sisterhood Slumber Session was to capture similar moments as well as get to know one another. On Saturday, March, 5, 2016, we held our first sisterhood slumber session. There was open dialogue to allow sorors to share their feelings and thoughts about life issues and sorority life. We learned about each other and some sorors learned things about themselves.
And for those that know our Basileus, Soror Shannon Mcquire- Lee, it would not be sisterhood slumber session without the karaoke machine. We laughed, ate, danced and some performed their favorite song. Through talking, breaking bread, singing and dancing we learned more about each other. In the end, we discovered that everyone has a valuable life story to share and not everyone will agree on the same idea/thought. The differences in each one of us make creates a stronger sisterhood and respect for each other is the thread that holds the seam. For sisterhood is a blessing that sometimes that is taken for granted.
