since Virtua Fighter 3 Is seemingly bound to appear on the Saturn using a 3D accelerator of some description, the smart money would be on a Scud Race conversion appearing mid-way in 1998. Still. this is just conjecture from over-exciled members of the SSM team! FOUR COURSES Oaytona USA only had three different oourses ... well that number has been upped in Scud Race wilh four different tracks nowon offer. [nDaytona thosetrackswereeasilyrememberedasbeingofeasy,mediumor hard difficulty. Things are a bit more complicated in Scud Race ... but not that much. Instead of having just the one easy course,inslead there are two shorter courses to choose from. Dolphin Tunnel is the name of the first beginner course and this is set in daylight. The second track, Twilight Airport, is also set atan easy difficully level. but is sel at night to make thingsjusI atad more difficult (a nd show off more of the Model]"sawesomegra phicalcapabilities). From there we move onto the familiar realms of the medium and tough difficulty levels. The intermediate difficulty track is known as Mystery Ruins (no prizes for guessing what you'll find in some of the backg round scenery here) and the expert track isthe bizarrely monickered Classic Castle. Again. in keeping with what has been established in Oaytona USA. the more difficult the track, the longer It is. and conversely. the amount of laps you needtooompleteislower
Take a look at the screenshots to witness the sheer detail on these tracks. If you thou!lht Daytona had a lot to apprectate, you'll really get a kick out of what Model 3 has enabledAM2 loachieve.Theeffectsare frankly rtunning. Look out for the little bits of detail that really give each course character. On one of the tracks. there is even an enormous fish tank, with small individual fish mavmg around insldel With the rendering power of Model 3 at AMl's disposal. even the cars themselves look stunning. Zoom in dose to the texture·mapping and you get no pilceli· sation whatsoever_ and just look at how the lights reflect off the bodywork of each ofthe SuperCars. Not only that, but you can seethe fully detailed drivers inside each of the cars. oomplete with some dea!nt a ni· mation depending on what happening to the car. Ifs a revelation, mate!
REALISM 15 THE KEY Once a!lain, AM2 have triumphed in merging reality with excellent gameplay. SCud Race features a oontrol mode which is excellent fun to use and features awe· same feedback effects in the chair and the steering whe.!l. However. since the AM2 guys have ooncentrat· edon real cars. they have made sure that a great amount of realism is inherent in the game. Ouring the test phase. key membersofthetearn raced the four
AMl racers such as Virtua Racing and DaytonaUSA. Put simply,thegraphical excesses that Model 3 provides, combined with the attenlion to detail that AM2 are famous for has created what must be one of the most exciting. playable racing games everl Truly this !lame does play as well as it looks. Which is no mean feat.
Scud Race has already hada lirnited release in lapan and is currently on test in one location in th e US, where it became the fastest-grossing arcade machine of all·time. After the preview at the ATEI Show, we can expect a similar test to occur in the UK before the full·on release (which will probably be around March time). VRVIEWS All of AMl's driving games since Virtua Racing have featured the ability to choose your viewpoinl. Scud Race continues this fine tradition and this facility works in pretty much the same way as Daytona USA. The first two perspectives are inside-car views.llke Daytona, they consist of either a bumpers eye view (so to speakj or an intemal dashboardl steering wheel view. What is pretty cool about the latter is that you can choose a centred up perspectM like Daytona, or instead shift to the left behind the wheel which is how the view would be in reallifel In addition to this in-<ar action. you also get to choose nom two oul-of·vehicie perspectives. like Daytona this centres around a close·in view of your car or instead a swept·back chase helicopter style view situated behind and above your motor.
