Who I am? After three years study of Industrial design in Milan, whilst viewing design fairs and tasting local culture, my direction as a designer gradually begins to develop. Design can solve problems, design can make products beautiful, however, as for me, it has a greater meaning. I would like to design objects which could remind the forgotten, natural world around us, recalling the life experience. The natural world could be water waves reflected on a wall or cornfields blowed by a breeze. I have seen a rotating glass lamp which gives light waves on the wall, bringing me to a silent lake, and a long slender lamp which sways when someone comes close, like a plant. To define this feeling, the word POETIC could be the most appropriate one. Due to industrial tendency of my bachelor programme, I was always doing problem-solving projects. That’s why I haven’t realised any poetic design now, but I have many ideas. In order to achieve my goal, I have decided to choose a differently orientated master. Combination, from my point of view, is source of creative ideas. By combining unrelated things, I can get a tons of inspirations, though a major part of them are unrealisable. The possibilities of combination base on the variety of information in our head, and this variety is designer’s root of creation and is what people from special fields of study usually cannot achieve. In the future, I think that designers would put forward ideas and concepts which give directions and suggestions to scientific and tecnological research. Also, I have an idea of making a mechanism ( e.s. computer programme) which combines the words randomly, so a designer could get infinite inspirations.

A field that I am really interested in is handicraft, especially glass and ceramics processing. What attracts me in this field is not only the beauty of art, but also the potential possibilities. By changing the process I could have many different results. If I connect it with the POETIC design that I have mentioned above, what will it result in? I love enriching my life experience. Although I have studied abroad in Italy for 3 years, I’m already familiar with italian culture and language, and I want to see other cultures, other landscapes or other design attitudes, and to see how these designers design under their culture. For these 3 years, I was also thinking of what kind of thing I should design in the future. Could it be a luxury furniture that can be consumed only by the rich? Or an interesting item that can be enjoyed by everyone? Besides, I can draw a special kind of picture (you can see it in my portfolio, P28) I started drawing this kind of picture when I was very young. Usually I just draw a point or a Chinese character first, then give it more random curves and lines without any draft in my head, like a seed that grows up unexpectedly and naturally. Unlike the normal drawings, I don’t know what I draw at first but then it becomes something with soul. It departs from the same point or same basic form and the drawings can result differently with unaccountable possibilities . Sometimes I can tell the meaning, while other times I just enjoy the beauty of extending forms. To the best of my knowledge, they don’t belong to any art genre.

Background: In Ireland, a normal housewife only use a sandwich toaster once or twice a week, but the toasters on the market are difficult to store due to their irregular shapes. Also, all the existing toaster plates don’t match well with irish sandwich bread. Design: The ARÁN is an easy-to-clean and easy-to-store sandwich toaster designed for irish people. Its handle and feet which occupy a lot of space are integrated in the main body.

* ARÁN means bread in Irish.

Product: Musical Instrument for stroke rehabilitation Topic: Medical appliance design Completed: 2014, BHA graduation project, eventually exhibited in Fuorisalone Sarpi Bridge in Milandesignweek. Background: Persistent motor impairments are common following a stroke. And Playing instrument has been proved to be more efficient than conventional therapies. It was also shown that rehabilitation still has the potential to induce neurological and functional changes after 6 months. There is a need to develop a product that will meet the patient’s interests to actively engage them during and beyond the supervised rehabilitation period so that long-term improvements in upper extremity function can be achieved. Design: SULU is a lamp-liked musical instrument dedicated for domestic stroke rehabilitation. By tapping the light straps projected by SULU, patients can play songs.

* Name SULU comes from italian “SUonare la LUce” that means “play the light”. Also, It has a similar pronunciation with “solo”.

RESEARCH Define the design area After consulting a wide variety of scientific articles related to stroke rehabilitation, the design area has been defined.

FINAL CONCEPT Changes

The cubes will be held on a vertical rotatable shelf. One reason is for esthetics: 18 cubes put on the base can be a mass and this base needs to be more wide. Another reason is perception, putting a cube at the top of lamp can be strange and not intuitive. There are not instrument cubes anymore, instead user can change the instruments by press the keys. One reason is that the instrument cubes put together with the song cubes can confuse user, causing more time to search the cube that he wants. Another reason is that there are few instruments but a number of songs. There are two modes of use : Listening: User listens to the song and gets familiar with the rhythm. Playing: User plays the music, following the lights. Additionally, if user doesn’t put any cube on the base, he plays free. Switch touch. Considering the difficulty for stroke patient to press the normal switch, here a big touch switch is used.

PROCESS OF USE

TECHNOLOGIES How to know where is touched? The laser IR generates a layer of infrared light on table. When one touches the tabletop, the light gets reflected and received by camera IR that generates a image with which the inter computer calculates the position of touched point.

18 Zeyu Rong / Product design portfolio 2014

How to idenficate a song from a cube? In every cube there is a integrated circuit RFID that func+ons as a bar code. When a cube is put near the RFID reader under the note sign, the reader reads the code and transmit to a computer on which all the songs have been already saved.

In Chinese universities, there are many benches for rest. However, they are too dusty to sit on. Dust, affected by gravity, often settles on the upper surface of a bench. By contrast, the lower surface is always clean. So why not sit on this lower side?

Dust only settles on the upper surface.

Curved top prevents rain from flowing onto the lower surface.

EATING ABOVE Why must all the diners sit on the same plane while the space above is wasted? and why must strangers listen to my conversation consiciously or unconsciously because we are just too close? Especially when we talk about some private things? The solution is EATING ABOVE. EATING ABOVE is a system of seat and table with adjustable height. It’s designed for restaurant and bar which have a height more than 6 m or for outdoor. The purpose is giving user a special experience of eating and a sense of privacy. The factors of security, convenience, flexibility and stability are concerned in the design.

DETAILS Unit

Requirements and soltuions SAFETY: Diner doesn’t take risk of falling down. FLEXIBILITY: Diner can adjust position of seat and table to find a comfortable sitting posture. CONVENIENCE: It must be easy for diner to get meals and go to toilet. STABILITY: The seats and table must be stable in the situation of rising and falling, and in the situation of diner’s activity.

UMBRELLALIZE RAINY LANDSCAPES In this project, I extract the main colors from the photos of rainy day of different towns/cities, and use these colors to recompose close views and distant views of these spots on the umbrella. The purpose is to merge the umbrella into their corresponding rainy sceneries in which people use them, and to abstract these landscapes onto the umbrella.
