When Shakespeare wrote, “All that glitters is not gold” he wasn’t referring to the masterpiece that carries his name under construction in the Ashford Lakes section of Hunter’s Ridge. This “Gold” is certified by the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) and is this year’s Showcase Home in the 2011 VBIA (Volusia Building Industry Association) Parade of Homes. Built by Luxury Builders, Inc., President Anthony DiNizo, the “Shakespeare” successfully combines artistry with efficiency to headline the 2011 VBIA Parade of Homes DiNizo will use the “Shakespeare” as a showcase for combining the latest in green technologies with sophisticated design features. DiNizo, along with Jim Lucia and Alissa Bennett, comprise the “Green Dream Team”, an eclectic group on a mission to demonstrate that luxury and efficiency can be combined in an affordable and comfortable living environment. About the Certifications and Designations Florida Green Building Coalition There are four levels of certification, which can be accessed and reviewed at the Florida Green Home Building Coalition’s website www.floridagreenbuilding.org. The process to earn certification is lengthy and arduous and clearly demonstrates to a homebuyer that the home is earth friendly, affordable to operate and healthy to live in. The HERS Index is a scoring system established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100, while a net zero energy home scores a HERS Index of 0. The lower a home's HERS Index, the more energy efficient it is in comparison to the HERS Reference Home. Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption compared to the HERS Reference Home. This is DiNizo’s first showcase, although he is a two-time winner of the prestigious VBIA Builder of the Year award, a past president and state director of the Association; a third generation builder, licensed General Contractor, and a Certified Green Professional. “I’ve been incorporating green elements in many of my previous homes, but I’ve never invested the commitment into getting certified,” he said. “I love the Hunter’s Ridge community with its newest amenities and environmental care and concern. . . and this design provided us a great opportunity and a terrific challenge to really demonstrate what we could actually do as a team to incorporate incredible energy efficiencies with a drop dead amazing design.” The Shakespeare combines the WOW-factor with E-factor. The Shakespeare is designed with four bedrooms and three baths and features spaces that can adapt to meet the needs of a changing family structure. It introduces a “flex” suite – incorporating a wheel-chair accessible shower, vanity, and oversized single car garage with entry ramp that is tucked away to ensure privacy for anyone, from an aging parent to a returning college student. “People seem to be staying in their homes longer than during the boom years of the early 2000’s,” explained DiNizo. “Because of that, and because this home was designed to meet the needs of multigenerational families – to basically grow and adapt as a family grows and adapts - the extra investment in the energy efficient elements of this and other green homes will be paid back through energy efficiency and resale value.” The energy efficiencies achieved by employing “green” elements shouldn’t be overshadowed by the health benefits of green, according to Lucia. “Those benefits include the asthma-reducing positive filtration and no VOC paint throughout the home.” ❁

Most electronic goods come with limited manufacturers’ warranties, but coverage is minimal, mostly for defects in manufacturing or workmanship. If accidents happen, you’re out of luck. Moreover, coverage may be split between parts and labor. For example, coverage for parts may be for one year, but labor for 90 days.

Extended “warranties,” more appropriately called extended service plans, go beyond defects in parts or workmanship. If you live long enough, you realize that what’s old is new again. From the perspective of
home building, designing a home that can house multiple generations isn’t necessarily a new concept, but providing a home that is comfortable and adaptable to the ever changing twists life presents while maintaining a level of independence and privacy is something luxury Builders Inc. has incorporated into their designs.
Take this year’s Parade of homes Showcase home called The Shakespeare. This 3,750 square foot home was designed by Jim lucia of Winter Park and contains a number of features that comfortably houses today’s changing family needs and dynamics. “The doors and walls meet americans with Disabilities act widths, for example,” lucia says. “and there are no steps into the showers or between the two garages and the house.” Other thoughtful considerations are the lower light-switches and counters to accommodate wheelchair access. “For the past 10 years we’ve been finding a demand for additional space to accommodate larger families and multiple generations within the family living under one roof,” he continues.
“The kitchen seems to be where the whole family likes to gather, so everyone from the designer, interior designer and cabinet guy worked very hard at creating a space that is both functional and comfortable to socialize in.” Tony DiNizo, president of Luxury Builders
