ARCHITECTURE DESIGN NANJING, CHINA

Academic, Individual work, Instructor: A.Prof. WANG Chenghui 101005005@seu.edu.cn Third academic year 09/2015-11/2015 All drawings, renders, photos and models shown have been done by myself unless otherwise stated.

As a combination of three or more urban functions, a city complex could accommodate commerce, business, residence, catering, entertainment and transportation within a single or a set of connected buildings, which could establish an interdependent and reciprocal relation between those different functions and form a highly efficient urban multi-functional area. Such a complex is actually resulted from the urban agglomeration. In modern cities, people who are involved, whether they like it or nor, in a fast-paced society tend to compress their working and living environment in a relatively comprehensive space, which could arrange several social functions with a convenient, economical manner. It is this tendency that has cultivated the soil for the city complex to thrive.

In recent years, China is witnessing a flourishing development of city complex. In 2014 alone, based on the data from twenty-one major cities across this country, more than 570 urban complex projects had been completed, being built or firmly scheduled. Naturally, because of the fast development of city complex and the accelerating urbanization it indicates, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find spaces for more complex like this in the inner city, and therefore, our attention should be paid to our neighborhoods.

Site Study This project is only 1 kmaway from Xinjiekou, which is the central commercial and business district of Nanjing. According to its scale and location, I have determined its position: a small commercialoriented city complex as a neighbourhood center.

The site is located in the inner city of Nanjing near a narrow river, with about 0.5 ha. Public transportation around the site is very convenient. The metro line 3 and many bus routes connect the site with other places and a metro station Fuqiao is located on the southeast corner of the site. However, pedestrians are very likely to be endangered because of the surrounding messy traffic and the cars parking here and there. Those nearby residents would be considerably difficult to find a safe way to reach the metro station.

The project is located in the inner city, surrounded by populated community and schools, so the requirement of community residents and school students should be and has been carefully considered. I combined office, hotel, dormitory, cafe, restaurant and retail functions in one city comlex and created more open spaces such as riverside space, square in front of the station and terrace garden. The city complex is a intersection of the neighbourhood, providing spaces for relaxation, communication and reaction for all ages. This project is a practice of Transit Oriented Development: — the walk path is created to connect the community and the metro station; — the city complex is mixed with shops, restaurants, hotels and offices; — provide a variety of accessible open spaces and walkable streets; — construct underground parking lot to reduce surface parking;

CREATIVE INDUSTRY PARK

BLOCK GROUP DESIGN NANJING, CHINA

Academic, Individual work, Instructor: Prof. WU Xiao, 0086-13851780536 Third academic year 11/2015-01/2016 All drawings, renders, photos and models shown have been done by myself unless otherwise stated.

Site Study

Programme Generation 34.2m

The site is located in the inner city of Nanjing, with about 3.4 ha. Currently, here is a high density residential area with old multi-story buildings. There are plenty of historical, cultural and educational resources.

The former residence of Yang Tingbao is the most valuable historical building in this site. The idea is to generate a grid, taking it as the staring point.

This design studio requires students to transfer the populated community to a creative industry park.

There are three historical buildings in the site, which need to be protected. The Southeast University (SEU)campus locates on the west of the site, while the university dormitory area on the east side. Therefore, thousands of students would travel across these sites everyday. In addition, due to the large number of students and teachers, this creative industry park has high potentials in commerce and service business.

9

Programme Analysis This creative industry park is a pedestrain district only with two motor ways toward underground parking lot on the boundary of the site.

After the substraction, the remaining blocks would serve as buildings while the subtracted blocks as public spaces. The ground floor would be open to the neighbourhood, with retails, cafe, restaurants and some other service functions, which provide recreation spaces and commercial services for people living around.

This site is between the SEU campus and the dormitory area, so there are thousands of people go through the site every day. I created a road through the site, connecting the east gate of SEU and Taipingbei Road. And I preserve the original road in the site and it is slightly modified to make it compliant with the module.

There are two forms of office buildings. The single office near the river allows a company to own a whole building. While more than two companies share one compound office. The apartment on the north of the site provide residence for company stuffs and university students. commercial office apartment community activity

The buildings aroung historical buildings create flexible public spaces for variety of activities, such as exhibition, conferences and discussion.

LANDFILL REGENERATION

URBAN AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN ZHENJIANG, CHINA

Academic, Group work with YE Peng chief designer, plan maker & technology designer Instructor: A.Prof. JIANG Hong jianghongseu@163.com Fifth academic year 09/2017-11/2017 (most recent project) All drawings, renders, photos and models shown have been done by myself unless otherwise stated.

(pictures from the Internet) Zhenjiang is a city on the edge of the Yangtze River, with beautiful natural scenery and rich historical sites. However, the interaction between this city and the Yangtze has been cut off by the industrialization and the urbanization. Because of our keen pursuit for profit, the edge of Zhenjiang was occupied by a large number of plants and factories. The situation was worsened by the east-east landfill in the 1990s, where the original views of the riverside were completely blocked and replaced by rubbish. The interaction and communication between people and the environment have totally disappeared. Fortunately, the government realized the Yangtze River's outstanding resources for eosystem. And the landfill has ceased operation in 2016. This opens up new opportunities to explore new possibilities for the interface between city and nature.

N

Residential Buildings Industrial Buildings Landfill Area Water The quality of the ecosystem of the site continued to deteriorate with the deepening of industrialization. The construction of the landfill in 1990 made this situation even worse. This program aims to gradually rehabilitate the damaged ecosystem in the coming decades.

Just as the degradation of pollutants takes time, the construction of the city also requires a certain period of time. Phased system construction gives the possibility of flexible development.

TWIN CITY

URBAN AND RURAL DESIGN VIENNA-BRATISLAVA REGION

Academic, Individual work, Instructor: Prof. Erich Raith, erich.raith@tuwien.ac.at Fourth academic year 03/2017-06/2017 All drawings, renders, photos and models shown have been done by myself unless otherwise stated.

VIENNA BRATISLAVA DONAU-AUEN NATIONAL PARK DANUBE RIVER

Twin-City region map

The urban development process of Vienna cannot, and should not be understood without its close connection to that of the Danube and the Danube region. The Vienna Urban Development Plan STEP 2005 has already presented a "regional spatial mission statement", which was characterized by the slogan "Twin City Vienna Bratislava". It aims at transregional and cross-border urbanization processes, in which the Danube region is to gain the significance of an identity-forming "green center". Today, the two capitals and their surrounding regions are facing difficult challenges, such as globalization, urban expansion, social change and climate change. The Twin-city planning and design creates a sustainable developing way in both large and small scale.

To stimulate the communication between Vienna and Bratislava, I planned three transport loops (railway, highway and bikepath loop) to improve the transport infrastructrue in Vienna-Bratislava region. Freight and residents on both sides of the Danube can commute between these two cities, without damage of Donau-Auen National Park. 1. Rail: fix the gap between Wolfstahl and Bratislava of S7 line 2. Highway: new highway in north of Danube basin; tunnel under Danube river 3. Bikepath: bike paths through the national park on both sides of the Danube

24

Situated between the European capitals Vienna and Bratislava, the Donau-Auen National Park preserves the last remaining major wetlands environment in Central Europe. Here, the Danube is still free flowing and is the lifeline of the National Park. It creates a habitat for numerous animals and plants. The Vienna S7 line runs south of the park, passing the Vienna international airport and several towns and countries, ending at Bratislava. With convenient transport and abundant tourism resources, areas along the railway have high development potential. The sustainable planning aims to make harmonious relationship among nature, cities and people.

The Openbox located in the farm land can be used as a shelf for growing vegetables and flowers, The vertical planting shelf takes small amount of land while increses diversity of crops, which inceases farming sustainablitty.

The Openbox in the forest provide enough space for tourists to observing the wild animals, take a rest and have a picnic. And it also can be the platform for people to look out and watch birds.

The Openbox located in the town center is a public device attracting people to gather together, to interact with each other and to make more friends. Furthermore, the Openbox increases public activities and makes the town more energetic.
