Welcome Message Greetings ΛIS Family! Each year at ΛIS is so full of activities and so rich with memories that we do well to capture those moments as times to cherish and occasions to hold dear. We hope that our 2016-2017 American International School Yearbooks will number among the things you treasure as they provide poignant reminders of the things in our lives together that signal accomplishment, inspire pride, and bring us joy.
DR. WILLIAM JOHNSON Head of School
The range of experiences and the intensity of engagement viewed in these yearbooks offer powerful
If there has been one central theme this year shared by all levels of the school it is most certainly growth, in all its permutations. When I joined High School in 2014 we were 183 students, and next year we will start off with 315. We are growing in terms of numbers, but we have also become a much wiser teacher, staff and student body as we apply our varied talents, and together overcome challenges and celebrate successes along the way. We have become a team.
MR. JAMES JOUBERT High School Associate Principal
One of the best things about growth is that it is rarely boring. We might not know, despite the best-laid plans, what tomorrow or even the next block brings, it does create opportunities where we can lean on and learn from one another. Wizened IB Year 2 student or wide-eyed 9th grader
examples of how our school’s mission, vision, and core values vivify our community of learners and leaders. Collectively in the following pages – and the images that populate them – shine like facets of a rare and precious gem. Hold them here to the light, for here you will see us as we truly are connected, caring, and celebrative! In the pages, you will find a convocation of eagles, suspended in flight, poised to soar toward uncommon heights. Enjoy the exhilaration that both binds and transforms us!
in the first week, brand new teacher or oracle department head, we know we can trust in each other to move forward together. Take the time, when you have it, to look at those around you and for a quiet moment, reflect on the people who have helped you grow. The yearbook you now hold is a reflection of the efforts of the dedicated students and staff who worked diligently throughout the entire year to bring to you what I hope will be a treasured memory of the 2016-17 school year. Years from now, when you look through this book, may it bring joy and happiness to you of a time in your lives spent with valued friends, teachers and staff and the moments we shared together!

The IB Diploma Program’s Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) course is the study and evaluation of the impact of information technology (IT) on individuals and society. It explores the advantages and disadvantages of the access and use of digitized information at the local and global level. For our students, ITGS is a valuable course. Developments in IT systems have effectively created a second industrial revolution. As the relationship between human beings and IT systems continues to evolve, ITGS will provide young people with the tools to address the effects of this revolution. Furthermore, ITGS will also uniquely prepare our students with the wisdom to be informed and responsible citizens of tomorrow. The next step: Computer Science! - Mr. Antonio Setas-Martins -

The Advanced Placement (AP) program at IS offers students the opportunity to take university-level courses in high school. At the end of each one-year course, our students take a challenging exam to show they have mastered university-level course work. Beginning in school year 2017-2018, IS will offer the AP Capstone Diploma, and those who earn one will show that they are willing to challenge themselves academically and to devote themselves to successfully completing a rigorous program. Many universities in the US and other nations look very favorably on students who complete AP courses and perform well on their exams. - Mr. Wes Thompson -

Ambassadors The IS Ambassadors are a group of passionate students who work to transform ideas into actions. We are an organization established to raise money and awareness as well as to promote empathy for people and places in need, both locally and globally. The Ambassadors have had an exciting year. We were able to raise enough money to sponsor a year ’s worth of education for two elementary students, to donate mon ey and supplies to the Binh Minh orphanage, and to build a bridge in Soc Trang province. A Team - This basketball season is one of the most memorable events that has ever happened to each one of us. It’s our honor to represent the school in both national and international tournaments. Together we have demonstrated teamwork, trust, sportsmanship, discipline, and responsibility. Although we’re Runner Up this year, we were able to gain lots of valuable experience for future competitions. Our girls fought through all the sweat and pain until the very last minute. More importantly, we couldn’t be where we are today without our coaches, Mr. Cateriny, Mr. Fedorak, and Mr. Brian. In Quarter 2, Encore Play Production learned about and performed a series of physical theater pieces called “Chair Duets.” As the name suggests, chair duets performance involve the incorporation of chairs and music to create a series of repeated movements that tell a story. Chair duets may appear to be easy and simple; however, it is actually the opposite. A lot of practice was required in order to achieve quick, smooth, and precise movements between the performing partners. These performances were influenced heavily by UK groups Frantic Assembly and Push. In Quarter 3, high school Drama explored the drama theorist Brecht and his Epic Theater, looking at his play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. The primary focus of this unit was to look at theory in practice, where students learned and explored Brechtian theatre techniques to deliver a social message on the stage. - Mr. Dale Keys -

This year’s Halloween event was filled with fun and exciting activities. Costumes were worn and a competition ensued. Later that day, the high school, partnered with the middle school, hosted hordes of tiny monsters as the costumed elementary students came to the secondary building for Trick-orTreating. The day wrapped up with the annual Halloween Dance, which was so cool that even Frankenstein’s monster was tapping his affixed toes. - Mr. James Naylor -

Students in High School Choir have been working diligently toward developing musicianship, such as vocal, choral and instrumental skills. We look forward to our demonstration of a year’s work in these areas at the spring concert performance. This is the high point for any musician: the ability to share with others the magic and joy of making music, and, to touch the hearts of others with this magic. - Ms. Lucille Frances -

Week Without Walls 164
Playground project
Week Without Walls Grade 9 and Gra de 10 students went to Nha Trang this year. Asia Motions arranged many active and engaging activities for us. The first day in Nha Trang we visited the Oceanographic museum and then took advantage of the “supermoon that night by visi ting the beach across from our hotel. Students enjoyed the view, talking and wading in the ocean, while others played a vigorous game of handball. This was a great star t to the week! Throughout the rest of the week, we biked alon g the alluring coastal highway, climbed up to beautiful mo untain pools and painted playground equipment at the SOS orphanage. We also enjoyed teambuilding games, played on a giant inflatable island and recovered at the hot springs before leaving. It was a great week of experiential learnin g, community service and camaraderie! - Mr. Eric Anfinson -

This February, we hosted our largest and 4th annual ISMUN conference with four committees and 100 students from four international schools. It was yet again a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their leadership skills as they planned and executed the conference, created materials, coordinated teams, conducted the communication between participants, and chaired the debates. Our delegates were strong across all debates, our administration and press teams were diligent in their supporting the conference, and our executive team spent months planning. We received great feedback from the participating schools and cannot wait for ISMUN V! Well done delegates! - Ms. Elizabeth Tinnon -

This year our delegates participated in the UNISMUN conference for the 6th consecutive year. This event is one of the most respected conferences in the region in which top MUN delegates convene in eight committees to create resolutions for complex global issues ranging from cyber security to universal primary education and the geopolitics of renewable energy sources. Our delegates were active and influential across all committees and received public praise for their contributions to the culture of the conference as a whole.
