While, in general, the agenda for any design studio is independent of the particular exigencies of the project, there are, in some extraordinary contexts, inescapable conditions to grapple with. Rome presents such a context. It looms larger over architecture and urbanism than any other city. Imperial, medieval, baroque, fascist; it has repeatedly put into practice our by-now timid assertion that form is itself political and that the form of the city is inseparable from its power. This, clearly, is not always an emancipating architectural capacity. At times cruel, at others propagandistic, Rome’s form speaks unambiguously of power. Rome is a city of strong form in which buildings are conceived as objects sufficient unto themselves which then jostle aggressively in the street for dominance. In order to count, any intervention must acknowledge this and counter with its own strength. Rather than employ the bob and weave of weak form as an urban strategy, this studio will explore the urban effects of crude posture. Wedded to this exploration, and possibly at odds with it, will be the effort to partly dissolve the solidity of the buildings; an empty density in which the incompletion of ruins is countered with the immateriality of solids.

The studio will take as its project, the current redesign of a former military facility in the Flaminio neighborhood of Rome. This project, the Progetto Flamino, is currently the subject of an RFQ sponsored by the city of Rome. There is an urban planning component, which will be undertaken in the first part of the semester, and the design of a Città della Scienza, or Science Museum, which will occupy most of the semester. The Flaminio neighborhood dates to only (for Rome) the early 20th Century and is home to Zaha Hadid’s Maxxi (directly across the street), Renzo Piano’s Parco della Musica Auditoria, and two sports arenas from the 1960 Olympics designed by Pier Luigi Nervi.

Description: What's a High Rise? About twelve years ago the Department of City Planning, City of Los Angeles enunciated a conceptual plan for integrating the new Metro train lines with what was called an “increased density building development strategy.Whether this policy constituted a substantive and constructive change in the inter-relationship of planning policy and design in Los Angeles is a question to be pursued elsewhere. In particular an Expo Line station accompanied by a parking structure was built on the south east corner of La Cienega and Jefferson Boulevards, and a new high density site building site designation was approved for the property just north and west of the train stop, where National Boulevard intersects Jefferson.

Some of the windows extrusions can be boolean different with the mass to generate some interesting space and some of them play a role as sunsine tube to bring the light in.

Description: the project includes 23,000 net square feet of Instructional / Administrative program, 57,000 net square feet of student housing and staff/faculty apartments, 4,200 net square feet of retail, and 120,000 square feet of parking. In addition to the above program, the project provides outdoor terraces and instructional spaces totaling 16,000 square feet, which can be used by the staff, faculty, students and College guests. This project is a group work by me and Marissa Martorana.

[ APERTURE ANALYSIS ] Location: 5960 W. Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90028 Site Area: 0.8 acres / 0.3 hectares Size: 120,000 gross sq ft / 11,148 gross sq m Program: Instructional and Administration facilities, Residential, Retail, Parking
After the color is removed from the building and the apertures disappear, the building form, derived from three revolutionary based objects is revealed. This sequence highlights the deconstruction of the building form into its most basic primitives. The final form came from the intersecting and carving out from the form with several large and small scale objects. The additional cutting objects help to further refine the structure’s functions.
66
67
[ INTERIOR PICtures ]
On the upper floors of the building is the screening auditorium, used as a c o m m o n space for students.
When you first enter into the space, the terraced seating area is revealed.
When the colored objects were intersected with the building as well as each other, new spaces are generated.
68
Lastly, a cafeteria/ seating area with different r o o m s i s generated when two of the colored o b j e c t s intersect.

Interior construction design
FABRIKSTRASSE 15
Advanced Tectonics Works 2GAX
Description: Completed in 2009, Frank Gehry’s Fabrikstrasse 15 is an icon on the growing Novartis Basel campus. In the evening its brilliant sculptural form is underscored by layers of light — all on the interior — that gently wash the facade, illuminate the workstations, and glow from within its core. Our task is to find one piece of the project to design the interior constructions with all the materials we collect to create all this stuff. This is a group work by me and KE WANG and WEIZHE WU.
72
73
[ INNER DESIGN AXON ]
Anchored to a load-bearing reinforced-concrete skeleton that sits on a rigid 56-footdeep basement box, the building's structural steel shell supports an active tripleglazed envelope that is tied to its natural ventilation and lighting systems through a centralized building facilitymanagement system. Like a finely tuned machine, the building performs unobtrusively to provide comfortable surroundings for its occupants. Sliding glass doors on the ground floor and operable windows discharge excess solar yields and facilitate the flow of outside air, aided by a mechanical fresh-air system around the perimeters of the upper levels.
So what we design is from the concrete structure and the inner advanced system which from the limited information we collect from the internet and the books we have.
74
75
[ SPECIFIC DESIGN AXON ]
COOLING AND HEATING PANEL
CONVECTOR ELEMENT FOR LOCAL COOLING AND HEATING
FRESH AIR SUPPLY HUMIDITY CONTROLED 2 AIR CHANGES PER HOUR
RADIANT COOLING BY CHILLED ACOUSTIC CEILING
This shows the details of the interior we create for the building, basically from the structure, inner shading system, the air conditioner system, the power recycle system and ventilattion system.
