Mr. and Mrs. Zhang have purchased a site in the Berkeley/Oakland Hills that was never redeveloped after the devastating fire in 1991 that destroyed approximately 2,500 single-family dwellings. Because of the destruction of the fire, the house only has an existing rigid steel frame, which was built to withstand earthquakes with no additional bracing. This is the only part of the building that is similar to the Le Corbusier drawing of the Domino Frame. Mr. and Mrs. Zhang is an unmarried couple and they both are successful modern artists. They have no plans for marriage or kids over the next few years. They want to transform the existing structure into a modern house. Sometimes they will work at home, so they need a studio space. Mr. Zhang emphasized that the existing site has a good view, so he hopes to maintain the beautiful view even in the interior space.

CONCEPT

Connectivity is important in residential design. The design gives the residents to view the outdoors from many vantage points inside the home. Good spatial connectivity not only creates a good circulation for the owner, but also promotes connections between family members. In the project, the interior space breaks the traditional layout method and creates a new interior space with horizontal and vertical connections. The interior spaces of different rooms are connected to each other, reducing the visual blocking of the walls and making the interior space look more open. Meanwhile, the use of the glass curtain wall brings a natural view into the interior space, which will make the interior space and the exterior environment better connected visually. Using a lot of white paint in the interior space reduces excessive decoration. It allows the client to pay more attention to the charm of the space and enjoy the natural scenery.

Bluxome Street Winery is a wine bar and a tasting room. It is located at 53 Bluxome Street, San Francisco, CA 94107. This is a huge open space that includes a small tasting room, a winery floor, two cellars, a small kitchen, and a large warehouse. The winery has a very high ceiling and skylight. The winery floor has plenty of light during the day. Because this space is open and unique, many events are held here. The owner hopes to refurbish the entire winery and redesign the storefront. The spatial layout of the new winery also needs to be adjusted. They hope that the new winery will bring customers a new experience and better meet the needs of daily operations and events.

CONCEPT

COMMERCIAL DESIGN

Many old things are forgotten by us. However, these old things show the traces and memories of time. Although they are not perfect, they are often the essence of things. In the Plain House designed by designer WU Ting and The Pinnacle by designer Pickard Chilton, they are very concerned about the contrast between old and new in their designs. Inspired by their work, the essence of architecture became the most important element of the project. Wooden ceilings, skylights, open spaces, and wine barrels are the essences of the original building. These architectural elements fully demonstrate the charm of this building. Retaining and repairing the elements of the original building in this project will make them better integrated into the new design and become the key to the design. In the new design, the original architectural elements are preserved and combined with new materials and design elements to create a new winery space and bring a new experience to the customers.

CONCEPT

Cells are the smallest substance that makes up a living being. Each cell has its own unique DNA, which is connected to each other to form a large living body. In a company, every employee is like a cell that forms and supports the entire company. Every employee has his/her own unique personality and job responsibilitiy, so he/she can help the company to operate and develop more fully. In the design of Amplitude office, different functional areas are also like cells, which are important elements of office design. Each space will show its unique characteristics and charm. They interact to connect and create the unique charm of the Amplitude office. The employee who works in the Amplitude office will feel the new office mode and be comfortable in his/her office experience. These will greatly improve the efficiency and work mood of employees.
