XUEYING ZHANG VICISSITUDE

As I see it, the motionless architecture can be energetic, dynamic, and continuously changing in time and space. In fact, change is the essence of everything.The change in light from day to night, the way people occupy and move through the space, weather conditions, and the surrounding environment fill architecture with life. These notions of change allow me to design with more

logic and reason. The theme of my portfolio is about various aspects of change, such as the rise and recede in tide, the passage of time or the vicissitude of technology. Controversial as it sounds, the nature of variation is actually how an architecture becomes permanent. When architects fully understand the influence of change their designs possess, they tend to be more immortal.

APPARATUS

Water Museum

Axios Loudias Aliakmonas National Park, Greece

Whenever there is an holiday, people rush to seashore to enjoy the water for recreation. However, few of us have ever stare at it, feel the rise and recede in tide and the meaning behind it. Hiroshi Sugimoto, the famous Japanese photographer is addicted to capture these waters. In his photography, every piece of sea seems similar, yet has different emotions. In fact, the seemingly still sea is changing all the time. Connected to the moon phase, the rise and recede in tide would occur twice a day, with different tidal

range. However, the regular cycle of the change somehow reveal the immortal in it as well. The philosophy behind it is so attractive that I hope to visualize it. The water museum has no artificial exhibition but water. It’s more like a apparatus,to carry the water itself so that it can have various connection with people. In this way, visitors would have a better and deeper understanding of its change. The museum not only provides people with more sensate tide changing, various way to feel the water, but also a place for meditation.

Tide

The rise and recede in tide is gradual and subtle. People can barely notice it without a landmark and sometimes it takes few months to realize the change in it. There are seasons when the tidal range is high enabling me to sit by the waters whole day and take a series pictures. The seemingly still water has great power in comforting me, calming me down, making me mediate and recollect.

Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the moon and the rotation of the earth. There are certain rules of the change in tide. The tide would flood and ebb twice a day in certain time as the graphic presents. Connected to moon phase, the tidal range is in its climax at the beginning and the middle of each month when it's new moon and full moon. Moreover, the daily or monthly change has its own circulation to repeat over and over again.

The site is located in Axios Loudias Aliakmounas National Park, Greece. It belongs to Thermaic Gulf where the water is pure and peaceful. The seashore has an elegant curve, separating the site into partly forest and partly sand. The visitors can therefore enjoy different landscapes when experience the museum. The park is free from vehicles except for boats, creating an ideal place for visitors to get close to nature without interference.

The museum serves as an apparatus. In different situation, the water fill into it in various ways to interact with people. Sometimes you find yourself beneath the sea level and sometimes above it. The water sometimes is on the left and

sometimes on the right, or both sides. You can touch it, play with it or just stare at it, feeling the rise and recede in tide, letting it wash your soul.The architecture is actually an exhibition itself. It creates a place for people to meditate.

The lineal museum has a clear circulation. From its entrance, visitors gradually going beneath the water. The refraction of the water projects on the wall, constantly flowing. Afterwards, they would go up to sea level and see waters fill inside. In the middle of the museum is a harbor where they can take a boat sailing to the sea. Then, they may climb to the lighthouse, overlooking the endless sea. In the end, there is a hall for performance.

Between the museum and the shore is an enclosed area for people to swim, to play with water. Visitors can enter it either from the shore, or from the architecture as the left rendering shows. In the center of the museum is a harbor. It is the climax of the whole museum and has multi-function. In the daytime, visitors can sail into the waters to see the vast sea. It is also

a place for them to take a rest, to feel the sea breeze sweep along their faces. In the night, when the ride recede, the harbor become a platform, allowing player to perform. The projector lamp place all the focus to the player, creating a peaceful and comforting atmosphere. Here the stage is not only an artificial one, but integrates with the contribution of nature.

Down to Sublime

The premise of design is that we entered into an era of postsustainability, an era in which the window for the pursuit of sustainable design has now closed. The built environment might actually participate in cleaning or restoring its environments. The design is within the context of a multistorey-integrated-hybridpublic-open-space and builtenvironment that house a living tall grass prairie museum, a bioregional seed bank and research centre that locate at

the Market Lands site in the Exchange District of downtown Winnipeg. In Winnipeg, water has played an important role with Red River right across the city. However, city’s potable water has been transported from the distant Lake of Shoal on the Ontario border. If the water were polluted, citizens would be cut out of water supply. The Red River is a desired water supply, yet the water quality doesn’t reach the standard. Therefore, the project turns the prairie museum into a water filtration machine.

Current Water System

In Winnipeg, water has played an important role with Red River right across the city. However, city’s potable water has been transported from the distant Lake of Shoal on the Ontario border. The site is close to Red River. However, it contains excessive Phosphorus.

Formation

Above ground is the living museum, preserving endangered prairies. The architecture itself is humble to the surroundings. Walking towards the main entrance, people can view the Red River College which has hundreds of year’s history. The route on the site designed to connect critical joints with large flow of people, creating shortcut for them to pass through. Meanwhile,

passengers might be attracted by what is inside the building when they look through the large window pans. These sloping route is capable of collecting rain water, melted snow water, as well as floods into designed aqueduct for filtration. The project serves as a public open space, a living museum, a research centre, as well as a water collector and purifier.

Rain, melted snow, city flood can be collected by the sloped ramp. Red River water is borrowed througn the old bumping house adjacent to the site. Using the gravity, water has been filtered step by step to the public bathes, known as the “grey water”. Finally, water is processed with ultralight to be portable. The purified water can be stored, used by the building itself or the city.

Psycho Community

The project is about the potential relationship between psychology and architecture , using psychological matrix to generate architectural forms, using architecture as an instrument, an investigate tool to express things. In particular, areas in personality traits and personality disorders and the relationship between them. Built on the theory of the Five Factor Model (FFM), there are five dimensions for personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.

Each dimension has a high score and low score personality which makes the total ten. Built on the theory of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). There is a close relationship between the FiveFactor Model of personality and personality disorders such as high score in neuroticism leads to avoidant personality. Besides the ten personality disorders, two blades are created as a way to connect between them, creating a semi-enclosed space for the group of people.

Ten personality disorders' typology built on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Their position between the blades is based on the personality disorder profiles accordingly.

These houses is not designed for sheltering those with personality disorders, but to use psychological matrix generating architectural forms. This is the innitial research on personality disorders and how architecture form can interact with them.

The blade is a way to connect between the ten personalities disorders, creating a semi-enclosed space for the group of people. The form of the blade is concise and monumental, generating a sense of remote and distance. Inhabitable house is to make the form more believable. The furniture is part of the industry design that reflects personality traits.

Psycho Community II

Currently, personality disorders are treated either with psychiatric counselling or medication. But can architecture also be a part of the treatment method? Last semester, my Thesis Research project used architecture as an instrument to develop forms from ten personality disorder traits. This semester, I have designed a rehabilitation centre to house patients with personality disorders. Situated in a secluded area with a calm and serene context in nature, patients are

divided into three clusters: A-Eccentric, B-Dramatic, or C-Anxious1. Spaces are meticulously designed with respect to each of the cluster’s characteristics, with an aim to facilitate rehabilitation through an architectural approach.

Based on the DSM(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), personality disorder patients are divided into three clusters: A-Eccentric, B-Dramatic, or C-Anxious. Research reveals that Histronic, Narcissistic and Obsessive Compulsive personality disorders were actually more common in executives than in the disturbed criminals. Therefore, they are not included in this facility.

Cluster A is odd or eccentric disorders. Generally, they don’t see themselves as mentally ill. They are treatment resisting but post no threat to others. The strategy for these patients is to respect their nature. Since they tend to believe in supernatural power, their living space is designed to give them a divine feeling.

Cluster B disorders are dramatic disorders. They have the potential to hurt themselves or others. Therefore, the section is designed to suppress their feelings of anger by introducing repetition elements. In this way, they can sense order and discipline in their living area.

Cluster C is anxious or fearful disorders. They are aware of their symptom and seeking treatment. Accordingly, the section is designed to encourage their social interaction with each other and have more exposure to nature.

CLUSTER A

All the wards are built underground with chimney-like skylight. However, they are not entirely separated. An outdoor courtyard and an indoor courtyard act as public gathering spaces. The centre skylight in the indoor yard, an inverse cone, can collect rain or snow. Water continuously drips down to a puddle, creating a sense of divinity.

CLUSTER B

Cluster B is a linear building. Beneath the bar building, repetitive arches set the boundary of public baths. Above the building is a roof garden. Patients of cluster B are inclined to be emotional and dramatic. Therefore, they can use their extra energy in labour work such as growing crops, making them self-sufficient. On one end of the building is a two-storey high public space as therapy rooms. Natural light shed into the area through the skylight. There are semi-transparent partitions which are flexible and can use for either individual or group treatment. The corridor outside the wards also has repetitive arches in forming the ideology of order and control.

CLUSTER C

The interior walls have various openings as a way to stimulate patients’ visual and physical connection. If they are not comfortable with being exposed, they can draw the curtains on. Several patios in the building bring both natural light and greenness into the interior. The roof garden allows them to take care of their plants or walk their pets. Their therapy rooms are divided by curtains. Curves consume the space, offering them a sense of safety and calmness.

The two blade buildings serve as institution purpose and public activity area. The public spaces are unified by the colour red, including a fitness centre, a running track, an open theatre, and basketball playground. Besides physical exercise area,

there are also mental exercises spaces, such as meditation area, library, public baths. Situated in a secluded area with a calm and serene context in nature, they form a comprehensive rehabilitation for patients to relax and enjoy their life.
