Afterword & AcknowledgmentFew people

know what they look like from behind. This book might be seen as mirrors in a fitting room. These photographs were selected from my work between 2003 and 2007. For some of them, I do not remember exactly what I was thinking at the time. All these photographs, however, prove that I have been attracted to all these figures, and some of them remain so powerful to me that they motivated me to make this collection. I classify this album as a coffee table book. Readers, including myself, would flip through it starting from any page, anytime and anywhere, without expecting a conceptual ambition. Meanwhile, one might yet come upon something sometimes. During the tough process of sequencing, scanning and dust-removing,

I repeatedly stared at these portraitures and their fine details, sometimes seeing nothing, sometimes seeing something behind what I was looking at. ...... I am indebted to all who encouraged me to produce this book, especially Jin Hua, who gave me the first positive feedback when the book was just a few PDF pages, and who continued to keep greatly interested in the progress of the book; Li Shuang, who, again, shared with me her enthusiasm and capacity for languages, revising the text in this book word by word. I am also grateful to Cao Mengqin, Ni Yibin and Chen Qiaoshan, who helped me with English writing on their own initiative. Zheng Yaohua April 26, 2011
