Research project - Fonts in USE CONTEXT - This project redesigns the Chinese tradional typeface-magazing cover (!912-1949). The purpose is to preserve this ancient lost typeface and reuse it a new way. IDEA - This project include three parts: analys the original typeface / deconstruct each part / find the relationship the Chinese characters.

Yinghua Fonts - Reading the cover font of Critical Yinghua, a magazine in period of Republic of China, we summarized the used fonts and compared the features: match quadrangle and round, emphasis thick quadrangle via tiny round shape, vivid character jumped, WRT(with respect to) above more idea followed this footprint.

Dianxing Fonts - Analyzed the cover font of Dianxing, a magazine in period of the Republic of China, we found that two words are not square instead they are slim& thin rectangle. Highly summarized sketch writing process, deleted details, used triangle replaced point or line, simple geometry received more attention from complex package. We developed more according to this characteristic of letter.
Dianying magazine (1914-1918)
Book design - Dialect CONTEXT - Different frequently used dialect habit in north and south of china expressed by visual communication. IDEA - Varieties of Chinese, consisting of hundreds of local language varieties, the speaker’s regional or social background have their own way of pronunciation and mandarin is the largest spoken language in China. The varied manner of articulation will produce the obviously differences of acoustical feeling. I’d like to express it by graphical or visual manner.

The book was divided in two parts, left and right. Left part: dialect reading manner, such as repeat, exaggeration, or other language substitute. / Right part: full version of press release, dialect note mark on each page left corner
New words from radio or video are all clear pronunciation and extremely rich tone. The differences are more outstanding when these words are spoken by dialect. So I picked one page of news words, compared how these are expressed the different visual feeling through standard mandarin and local dialect.
Book design - NanHu market CONTEXT - With special local characteristics and typical feature, this project expressed whole market in visual way. Doing research and investigation in market everyday, I decided to write a book by a typical clue of market. It’s a neighborhood open market, and also will be shut down after a week. So every where shown varieties SALE, which the letter connected the whole book. According to a day’s working hour, the book’s middle illustration being a time line, expressed the people flow and environment change during market open to close hour.

I found lots of typical staff in the Nanhu market, especially after several days varieties daily time research. There are plenty of useful materials, such as photos, video, sound recording; picking staff in open market; co-activates recording by market retailers; co-drawing works from children in market; etc.
Interactive design - Monster CONTEXT -The project was designed based on sound control game. IDEA - The step is by passing computer game through sound control. Player can control the monster’s direction and broken obstacle through bullet shot. Environment will change by passing different step. According to the design team leader, my work is setting the process of the game, including the decision making of game design style, division of work and designing communication. The aim of this game is to relax the player’s body and mind. Attracted player’s positive attention by sound control. game view is simple and use geometry style collection, main character is animated cartoon and simple game environment.

Brand design - Zao package CONTEXT - The project is a theme designed to emphasized the local chrematistics brand design. IDEA - Zao- Chinese date, commonly known as "flesh jujube”.When a young lady is ready to marry, the fresh red Jujube and the embroidery insole are always use as the marriage present to the new couple, in order to have son earlier and remain a devoted couple to the end of lives. We took to have son earlier part, because the Chinese mandarin “jujube” pronunciation is exactly same as Early as well as followed Chinese traditional marriage culture.

Comprehensive Design - Movie CONTEXT - "Starting Something"is a dynamic and growing exhibition during the Beijing Design Week 2013 presented by the guest designers from Amsterdam, "Sandberg Institute", and students of CAFA(Centre Acamdey of Fine Arts) in Beijing. IDEA - My work is a sort of trial element analysis. We had focused on the hero in a show or a movie, and easily ignored the supporting roles. Supporting show is a vital ingredient in a movie so I chose popular movie screen print and silky blur other parts to emphasize the supporting actor/actress. Detail is the key of success. Detail is the important and essential factor in the whole design work.

Creative plan - Dashilar CONTEXT - A project cooperated with a group of Beijing Design Week to find a new perception of the "dashilar" courtyard. IDEA - Dashilar is a typical Beijing local place, with lots of Hutong(alleyway) and Siheyuan (courtyard house). Siheyuan is a historical type of residence that was commonly found throughout China, most famously in Beijing. Wa Dang is part of traditional elements in Siheyuan, we organized an visual design activity to try to take it back of our modern life. And my job was design a whole activity, design poster and website design. Simple Signage design for activities

Wa Dang
Decorated Wa Dang (eaves tile), a kind of ornament building materials meanwhile shielding the eaves from wind and rain, most of courtyard-style in Dashilar is traditional Siheyuan. Wadang is the first tile on the roof of house and there are characters or pattern. Our team decided to organize the “Dang Ai( in love)�activity because this features to design the Wadang pattern so that every one will have their own Wadang pattern.

In order to keep for memory or souvenir, we designed a serious of WaDang package. Wa Dang became a present and memory, we hope we can draw more people attention to care more Dashilar through this kind of activity.
Book design - Fossil Book CONTEXT - Choose a book to express their topic through visual communication IDEA - We chose British writer Herriot The Lord God Made Them All . The sequel to All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful. Started from unforgettable moment, I decided the fossil can be topic because fossils are the preserved remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past. This material has the capability to freeze in a long time, and I took photography and book noting to show the processing. Although process is disappearing, the character and noting will be never forgotten.

IDEA - From original sound of famous movie The lost time There are two parts: solo&song. Flow lyric words on paper is just like the time pass like flowing water. Sole word to shown the changed style. I try to represent the rhythm of music by using the visual language.

Sound Visualization - A~Tiii CONTEXT - The sound visualization was discussing the relationship between graphic and sound. IDEA - Explore relationship between graphic and sound Different nose made different sounds when your sneeze, just like A Q ‌ We found this is interesting phenomena and study it. we initial this activity, 50 volunteer worked with us, collected their sneeze recording and made all sounds to a simple music, combined graphic character vision design transferred to space and direction use digital method re-collected all sounds and visual view relationship.

Intertextuality Research - OMG CONTEXT - Discussion on the new relationship between character and graphic or words and imagination IDEA - Paradoxically, typing and hand writing seems to be just opposite. But I’d like to build the new way to unite the opposites and a method or a bridge that will build two sides: the modern typing and hand writing. To invest new meaning of hand writing, I wish my design works can relief hand writing and also find another way to express one self in modern language environment. Not only explore the character; there are also another rule for everyone. That is the communication method where all the participants become a designer and the designer return the design right to participant.
