The present volume contains 49 families, 135 genera, and 222 species of vascular plants from the mangroves of northwestern South America (Pacific Colombia, Ecuador and Peru). It includes keys of identification and detailed description of all the species. The treated species are cited with basyonyms and synonyms, descriptions, distribution, ecology, IUCN Red list category, and when available, vernacular names, biological interactions, phenology, etymology, uses, notes, and discussions. The book also puts forward a classification of different mangrove types. Based on the floristic composition, the Chocoan and Equatorial-Pacific mangrove forests are here proposed. Some novelties are included as well as many overlooked species have been documented for the first time. The book is illustrated with 47 plates containing 140 species of plants and constitutes a "must have" volume for field work in the mangroves as well as for any and all environmental studies carried out in these most fragile ecosystems.
