Architecture School Public and Private Individual Work April 20, 2017 Tutor: Lei Zhang Site Location: Beijing University of Civil Engineering And Architecture, Beijing , China

With the development of the real-estate industry in2000s China, Architecture was becoming a hot major in universities. Therefore, thousands of universities began to offer architecture courses in order to meet the needs of the exploding numbers of architecture students. However, due to the lack of available rooms, many universities only provided students with the classrooms for collective courses. So students did not have places to draw or to make models.

Recent years, a building-renewal campaign in universities is in progress. But the demands of architecture students are totally different now than they were 20 years ago. Communication spaces are as important as study spaces. So different qualities of spaces are required now rather than a single quality space. In this progress, I am trying to explore the relationship between public space and private space by using a single element: wall beam.

To meet the need of large span structure, the height of roof beam reach to 4 meters. So double roofs is used in this building, hiding the half-beam above Roof B to commit a good visual effect inside.

The wall-beam on the second level can separate spaces in horizontal direction, but the spaces can still be flowing.

This wall-beam restricts a large space on the top floor. The "L" type creates a private area which provides students with a quiet zone to look up information.

Cinema Commercial Complex Every Piece is Emotional Individual Work June 28, 2018 Tutor: Xiaojun Deng Site Location: Binhai Road, Hangzhou Bay New Area, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China

In recent 10 years, movie industry in China is developing in an irresistible trend. The numbers of cinemas is increasing every single year. More and more people are willing to enjoy the movies in cinemas due to the better visual and acoustic experience. But as a matter of fact, people tend to watch popular movies rather than art movies in cinema. It may lead to the uneven development of movie industry. If a cinema schedules the art movies, almost 90% seats will leav-

e unused. If it does not, then many art movie directors may lost their dreams due to the lack of financial resources. In this project, I am trying to resolve this conflict by decompose the traditional movie hall. What’s more, the relationship between cinema and commercial street is also redefined. More usage scenarios will be given and people will have more choices when they are shopping or having meals in commercial street.

Scenario 2

Scenario 3

Problem

The occupancy rates of popular movies are extremely high while some good literary movies are in the opposite situation. It causes the waste of screening resources.

14

Strategy Remain some large screening rooms to support the needs of popular movies, and cut the rest of them into pieces. Each piece will be given a new usage scenario.

Stage

Auditorium

Balcony

Connection with traditional theatre A traditional theatre usually consists of three elements: Stage, Auditorium and Balcony. They may be decorated by different components, but the forms are always symmetrical. For one hand , the symmetry form conform to the aesthetics of classical architecture. For the other hand, it creates a good acoustic environment for the theatre. The same combination of three elements is used in this project to provoke the emotion of customers. The platform in second floor is analogous to the balcony in traditional theatre; The main staircase is analogous to the auditorium; The outdoor stage is analogous to the indoor stage. However, the form of this outdoor stage is not symmetrical, because it does not need a space which can focus the sound. The edge of "Balcony" is free. Thus customers will feel at ease while hanging out in the commercial street .

Scenario 1 Strangers Maybe both of you are fond of the same type of movies but you didn't know each other before. Now you have a chance to watching and communicating together.

Scenario 2 Family It is not easy for kids to control their feelings. They cry or laugh when they feel sad or happy. Unluckily, voices is not allowed in cinema. But they can express what they feel in this hall !

Scenario 3 Friends The flexible indoor layout may offer you a good atmosphere to enjoy the movie time with your friends. You can do anything you want just like you are in a party

Self-Regulating City Movability Makes Efficiency Individual Work October 10, 2018 Tutor: Jian Liu Site Location: Hangzhou Cerry Centre, Yanan Road, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

Hangzhou is famous for the West Lake. Millions of people visit here on holiday, especially in National Day Golden Week. The scenic areas are always over populated in peak tourism period, which influences the visitors experiences directly. What’s more, it will bring the inconvenience to transportation of citizens. The project site is located on the boundary of scenic area and city. So there are many complex functions in it, including residential area, commercial area,

offices area, municipal services and hotel. But the population in each function are fluctuating violently various from time to time. Luckily, with the development of urban big data and technology of automated driving, a self-regulating city will emerge. The city will adjust the forms under the guidance of real-time visitors flow rate. In this project, I will replan the functional layout of the site and show the progress of how the city is generated.

BOUNDARY

Relationship between city and landscape The West Lake is the most famous scenery in China. It is embraced by green hills on three sides, and one side faces the city. Though the local government had published numerous regulations to limit the building height nearby to protect the landscape along the lake., The boundary between city and landscape is still clearly. So in this project, I am trying to make the boundary be vague by introducing the landscape into the city.

The role of Green-way

We have more open space to exercise and relax. And the air is fresher.

When I am in the office, the view out of the window is more beautiful.

The green-way offers me a fantastic place to walk and read. It is enjoyable to walk along the green-way when we come back to hotel.
