01 PUBLIC·PRIVATE Apartment of International Students
Sep. 2012 - Nov. 2012 Director: Li Hua Nanjing, Jiangsu, P.R.China Individual work, Academic work
Requirements The site is located in front of the Southeast University. Also, the site is amid a community where there’ll be many people walking around everyday, which means they also need a public relaxing space. An apartment for international students is required here. Considering the problem that foreign student will face various problems here, I hope my design will help them to alleviate this phenomenon. This is an independent task in the sophomore year.
site
Inspiration Jekyll and Hyde single person with two personalities, one good (Jekyll) and one bad (Hyde). As foreign students leaving their homeland, in one hand, they must be longing for the interaction with each other. However, on the other hand, they still need some space to stay alone. I hope in my design, this two parts can both be considered.

The accessible roofs are linked directly to the hills. They are like new ridges extracting from the original topography. The core concept of my design is to make the tea house disappear in the environment.

Here comes the second tea house. Both the two surrounding inner space can enjoy the scenery here. In the middle of the tea house is the most active part of the whole design, and that’s exactly the reason why a yard is needed here so that the pressure of treamline can be alleviated.

Inspiration
1:Dramatic Contrast Such a wired phenomenon. Within the site, it is the relics of Yue City - the old folk dwelling clusters of Nanjing. Bare surface has faced the sky after the clusters was flattered. It is a scar in South Nanjing. However, there is a dramatic contrast within Yinma Lane. in same place, same time, just an rampart apart, life in Yinma Lane is pastora. Life there doesn't belong to this contemporary world. a heap of rubble
morning market in Yinma Lane
2:Contradictoriness There has always been the contradictoriness between the renewal of city and the low-storey and high density buildings, between the high speed of modern life and the traditional social relationship. The speed of traditional city to resolve is fast beyond our imagination. "Architectural design cannot simply based on the goal of remodeling the history and background of city. Our challenge is how to provide new design scheme for city who has lost its urban context. Architects should unscramble city in the present state instead of what it used to be or should become." (Richard Dagenhart) Perhaps the traditional Chinese street-and-lane form and the social relationship still own their value, but there's no doubt that the certain kind of building form is out of date. 19# Gaogang Li

Forming Procedure of Nanjing
Requirements
Farmlands and Villages in wilderness Ancient capital of the Six Dynasties Republic of China the People’s Republic of China To Be Continued...
The site is located in the famous business sphere - Hunan Road. A design containing function of business, hotel, department and office is required here. The design has to concordant the existing transportation and city space, in order to give a rise to the economic and social value of the whole site.
520AD
After the foundation of The P.R.C, things have changed a lot. Modern Architecture have rapidly appeared here in Nanjing, which is beyond our expectation. So, what’ll happen in the future?
1912AD When the Republic of China founded in 1912 AD, Nanjing was once again made the capital of the whole country. A lot of famous building was constructed during this time. Also, the grid system of Nanjing was steeled now.
Evolution of Overall Planning in Nanjing
1949AD
?
History
Nanjing entred its most prospective period in history. It was made the captital of almost six dynasties. Economy, culture reached the peak at this time.
Almost during Shang Dynasty, Hushu Culture appeared in Nanjing, farmers and villages came into being in this region. Republic Of China (1919-1949) <The City Plan Of Nanking> was published offically by Nanjing government, which divided city into industry estate, settlement, commerical district and cultural district.
People's Republic Of China (19812000)
People's Republic Of China (19912010)
People's Republic Of China (19912010)
People's Republic Of China (20072010)
Circle-layout of proliferation model came into being. Gulou-Xinjiekou become the centre of Nanjing. Site was included into main city.
According to the overall design of Nanjing, three levels appeared: administrative region, metropolis circle and main city.
Main city was the core of metropolis circle, using the rivers, railway and ramparts as the enclosure. Our site is located in Gulou district.
<Overall planning of Nanjing> (20072030) is offically published, three levels form.
During 1828-1930, Zhongshan Road was established, the axis of city formed.
During 1931-1934, the governemt focused on developing the roads in south city. Radical roads in city centre was basically completed.
After 1935, the road grid have been extended to west and north city.
Evolution of overall planning in Nanjing
The road grid initially founded by the government of Nanjing Natioanl government.
38
After the Northern Expedition (1926-1927), only the Lion lane was established.
39
Inspiration Two Grid Systems Exist in the Site. 1: Skew system Since the beginning of Nanjing, the local people have built their house along the river, and the skew system has gradually appeared. 2: Orthogonal system During the Republic of China, <the city plan of Nanking> was practiced. The orthogonal system was introduced from west countries.
Weaving City The city tissue in the site is is in chaos. Skew system and orthogonal system collide into each other in the site, which leaves a huge vacant hole there, making it don't know which grid to follow, lost and adrift. It occurs to me that my design may act as a piece of cloth and needle in order to weave the missing city part, in the meanwhile, it can reconcile the two totally dierent grids over here.
Methodology 1: The current situation of the existing site. 2: According the surrounding, dividing the site into dierent function zone. 3: Corresponding the city tissue via dierent scale of body mass. 4: Softening the boundary besides the river according to the bank. 5: Sparing the square along the Hunan Road as well as keeping the boundary, forming the second flow line. 6: Imitating the shape of hills and decide the exterior of towers. In the same time, linking the river in site with the shape of river.

Analysis of the Grid System According to the former investigation, there are two grid systems existing in Nanjing due to the influence of history. The skew system and the orthogonal system. Two system counter into each other in the site, which requires a design to coordinate these two systems. All the grey lumps are the shape of the buildings in the site, including my design. The red line indicates that there are two kinds of grid system over here. As you can see in the picture, I use comparatively small lumps to match the existing architecture, in the meanwhile, rotate them to some angle in order to be in line with the grid system.
Perspective of the Grassland From the commercial street in the west of our site, we can see the most active grassland in the core of the whole design. Decorated with flowers and lights, it is a place suitable for walking and playing.
Relationship of the Sight The red arrows represent the sight direction in the site. As you can see, the sight relationship is through in the site. Crossing the lanes and street inside of the design, we can have a good view of the city. Besides, in the middle of the design locates a grassland, which is the largest activity space here. When people are walking in the grassland, they can enjoy the scenery of the river. I think for an urban design, it is vital make the design integrate into the whole city, so not only do I lay emphasis on the inner sight relationship of my design, but i also want to make it feel the atmosphere of the whole city.
Function Pigment In this diagram, I use different color pigment to indicate the function of the surroundings, which is important for me to arrange my function cubes. The warmer the color is, the more active the cubes are. According to the color analysis, the commercial area universally locates near the street, where the traffic is the most busy. So I also arrange my commercial space near the street in order to make it attract more visitors in. The cultural space is put in the middle of site, nearing the river, enjoying beautiful scenery and without disturbance. The hotel is laid neat the dwelling part of Matai Street, which the easy to accessible.
Perspective of the Entrance It is the main entrance for the “weaving city”, in the Hunan Road, one of the most prospective road in Nanjing. Two playgrounds are spared here to lead into visitors, but two loconic commerical architecure are built to keep the original boundary of the road.
